View Full Version : Marc Stein: Spurs are #1 on LaMarcus Aldridge's list

You know, with Monroe and Millsap off the board, if we don't get LMA this team is basically a first round exit team for next year and not even a playoff team in the 2 after that, until Parker's contract is over.

He still has a meeting with the Knicks. So i dont expect a decision soon. He should also schedule a meeting with the Bobcats or Sixers cause i bet he loves to listen to shit.
Apparently following his Knicks meeting Aldridge will attend a Whyndam Timeshare Conference

I wonder if that news about there being a second round of meetings for the top 3 teams is true.

Super random but a friend of mine is currently in Australia where he says he ran into Dwight Howard. Started small talk and Aldridge came up. Howard told him that Aldridge was SA bound and that they are good friends who had talked recently.

He meets with NY today, and most likely Portland as well. Would be a bit surprised if he makes his decision by tonight - think Friday or Saturday is more likely. People need to chill out :lol It's a huge decision for someone who has spent their entire career in Portland.
Anyways, hopefully NY can land Lopez and Dallas can land Matthews. Can't imagine Portland would be too enticing when 3/4 of the starters LMA played with are gone.

This is not super random if you read the history of this thread.
If the Spurs fail in Alderidge pursuit after trading Splitter, it will be one of the all-time fails in GM history. Especially given how sportswriters have gone all in on the narrative that the Spurs have the best front office in the league.

The trade doesn't become official until after the moratorium, so the Spurs will know if they have a commitment by then.

Come on. I understand we all here think it's a no-brainer because we're Spurs homers. It's not that easy of a decision. He's had one night to think about SA since the meeting. If he makes his decision by tomorrow or Saturday night, that will be pretty quick considering the magnitude of the decision.

It's not about the Spurs, it's about ATL. Imagine if a team asked the Spurs to hold off on signing all other FA's with their cap space while the other team figures out what it's doing. Then all the other FA's the Spurs could have signed with that money are gone and the other team says "oops! our plan didn't work out, we are actually keeping our guy, thanks for waiting!"

Sherridan is not reliable IMO. AT all.
However, I see it like this. If we don't hear something by FRI, I doubt LMA is coming. That would tell me 2 things:
1) He was really torn by leaving POR and extra money and nothing wow'd him so much that he had to jump on it without thinking
2) Unlikely, but he is just waiting to see if PHX can actually pull something off because he wants to go there.

Pretty sure he signed for a higher APY than I was estimating. I said I would include incentives, which we don't know if the Spurs will include themselves. Only difference was an extra year. I said I would give him five. They gave him four. Sooo wrong of me.
apparently Mills does not need to be moved as you were continually stating
Never said he HAD to be moved. I said that moving him along with Splitter is almost necessary to complete a sign-and-trade for LMA. They could have ONLY moved Mills to fit LMA in. Or just Diaw. Or just Splitter like they did.
You might want to sit back and realize there are things you might not know happening behind the scenes.
I think you should sit back and realize that you don't know what people write. Never did I say I knew what the Spurs were going to do. I simply said what math was involved in which transactions and what I thought they SHOULD do. Get it right so you don't make baseless posts next time.

I want Aldridge on this team, but damn. He's 30, shoots jumpers at a low percentage, and plays very mediocre defense. You want to win, now? Sign with San Antonio. Want to be an 9th seed, sign with Phoenix. MFer thinking he's Lebron James or something.

Spurfan are so selfish. :lol I would not want such a needy insecure fan base. Guy is making a decision that will change his life. His decision will not even be felt by spurfan til the season starts. If you think the spurs haven't reached out to other players and gauged each other already you seriously do not appreciate the front office. The guys know what they're doing. Whether he signs or not, the dominoes are already in place to move forward. He take as much time as he wants, he won't ever get this again in his life. He earned it. Spurfan eager to cash in on another's accomplishments and claim he's dramatic when their cashing in on his life decision is postponed a whole day or two.

It would be, but more because it signals he isn't really "Spurs" material. I get the wanting to get courted aspect during FA, but he's done that at this point. He's literally had months to figure out the financial implications of each possible destination, and the contending teams pretty much have their rosters set if he joins them (aka most teams won't be able to maneuver much once he agrees). Either he is unsure about whether he wants that 5th year money or he doesn't know what role he wants (aka does he want to be the undisputed #1 option on a PO team or 1a/1b or 2nd option on a contender).
In terms of winning, the Spurs offer the best scenario. If he wants the money then its the Blazers, if he wants to be "the man" but never truly successful its PHX. But again it speaks to his character or lack thereof if they guy can't decide on what he wants and strings along 3-4 teams.

Yeah, if he's really that averse to playing any minutes at the 5 then I can see the Spurs moving on. They obviously want him to play the 4 alongside Duncan with occasional lineups based on matchups. If he's too dense to realize that and wants to turn down POR's money for a first round exit ceiling with PHX, well then there's not much the Spurs can do about that.....

I don't think so. I don't see a problem with him going all the meetings he scheduled. His agent would probably force him to. Imagine how pissed we would be if the Spurs had a meeting scheduled with a free agent (even if he was a long shot) Tim, Pop, and RC fly out to meet him and then the meeting is cancelled. It looks like Atlanta signed their 2014 draft pick yesterday or this morning, 7'3'' center known for shot blocking and defense. My guess is he and his contract are traded to Spurs as part of the Splitter trade, giving us a C.
Yeah.... got to get something out of that Splitter trade.
