View Full Version : Marc Stein: Spurs are #1 on LaMarcus Aldridge's list

I think Aldridge was going to need a gigantic incentive to leave for ANY lottery team, and I can hardly imagine Tyson Chandler is going to be enough to make him bolt what is a talented and young Portland team for the extra money.

I fully expect the Spurs to grab someone else if Aldridge decides to drag this out beyond tomorrow morning.
Yeah, I'm tuning out on this for the evening. We probably won't know anything until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest, and no amount of refreshes is going to change that.
(Okay, I'll probably still be lurking and searching...but I still ain't expecting much).

So who leaves Phoenix to make room for Aldridge? Bullshit rumor.
Ditto for Houston.
Down to Portland and SA. In spite of the rumors, would have to think it's hard to leave that much guaranteed money on the table, gotta give edge to Portland still.

The narrative of where LMA is going is probably going to change 2 or 3 times by tomorrow afternoon. I wouldn't get worked up about anything. Just 24 hours ago it was the Lakers who were the favorites, reportedly. Now they're off his list. It's all speculation. Just have a drink, relax, and enjoy the summer, tbh. We'll know soon enough.

Yeah, I don't buy all this "Phoenix in contention" noise. Really? You want to go to a lottery team with no plan, 12 point guards, zero defense, and absolutely no title hopes or history? Good fucking luck.
IMO it's down to Spurs, Portland, Houston. In that order. Hopefully Aldridge feels the same way.

Phoenix: Bledsoe
Houston: Ariza, that Greek faggot they have, and one of Jones or Motiejunas would open up enough space
They would both require Cleveland trading them Haywood though, which I think the Cavs would do in a second for Bledsoe and probably never for Houston's trash.

no way he goes back to Portland - team got worse - green gave some home cookin and splitter got moved I think there HAD to be some sort of reason for all of this… a bigger reason than Greg Monroe, but who knows. Media has everyone doing what they want actively reading and searching for information; it's all part of the game.

ding ding ding. The FO has been pat for 20 god-damn years tinkering around with little, precise, intelligent moves. No way in hell they let all that go to hell in a hand basket for "a shot" at LaMarcus Aldridge. Its either a done deal, or we're getting Lebron. That is what Ira Winderman was telling Francesa today. All of LA's meetings are in Los Angeles so the teams have already flown out there to talk to him so it would be kinda rude if he just cancelled there meetings after they flew out there.
With the Spurs trading Splitter this morning, they must know he will sign with SA. Just can't see trading Splitter without have some kind of assurance.....Maybe LA does not want to be rude and cancel the meetings on the other teams?? lol one can wish! lol
Spurs had to show they were all-in to sign him, and that there was already space to sign him. Not "we will sign you if we can make a deal". They sent a strong message with the Splitter deal, just ahead of the meeting.
Making a deal with Green early was another strong message. It says, "If you sign here, we're committed to spending money to put players on the floor with you."
For LMA to announce, before his other meetings would be an insult to those other teams. Those kinds of things come home to haunt you down the line. His agent wouldn't have let him do it, if nothing else. Doesn't mean he's signing in SA, but there was no way he was going to say he'd made a decision before giving the other teams a chance to present.

We've yet to see the Splitter trade details. He has missed 53 games over the last 2 seasons and averaged less than 20 minutes a game last season. At this point, a package of draft rights to some international players and a future draft pick(s) would be good value, also considering the cap room it frees up.

Lillard is more the face of that franchise. That being said I can't see how PHX is nearly as desirable as any of the Texas teams or Portland. If he chooses PHX then I'd reluctantly say "good luck, you wouldn't have fit in here anyways." Obviously I'd be able to tell him that directly.

Marc stein was on zach lowes podcast this week and basically said the same thing. Asked why teams with no chance take the meetings and stein said something to the effect that it helps teams seem like destinations and legit franchises. He said the clippers point to their meeting with lebron, even though no one thought they had a shot, as one of the turning points to turning their franchises reputation around.
Yeah, if i'm recalling correctly Lowe made this point last year too when Lebron met with the Clips. I think it's valid, plus who knows with the cap and some of these players signing shorter deals it may be a good first look type of thing.

Doesn't pass the sniff test for LMA or SA. Not to say he won't end up in SA but the sentiment makes little sense to me.
SA: there's no stronger message than Pop & Tim going full court press. It should make no different to LMA whether SA had the space. Just like PHX who has 0 cap space. Spurs had this move lined up. No reasonable person would tell the Spurs they needed the space prior to a commitment. SA given LMA their word that if he commits it's done should be good enough.
LMA: Not being rude? Who really has a 7+ team list. What would be rude is stringing teams along that have no chance. I've never seen a FA or Trade Target that has a list 7+ teams long. Unless he's the most indecisive person in the world, no way they have 7+ teams.

If all these rumors via tweets which we take as facts hold, then Aldridge is dutifully weighing his options (this is, after all, likely the last time he is the one of the top 5 free agents in an offseason, might as well enjoy it and take your time) and is focusing on the actual on-court outlook for each franchise he meets with and is seeking specifics. A good sign for the Spurs' life with Aldridge if it happens (not focused on non-basketball BS). Again, Spurs, by locking up Leonard and Green early have likely answered some of those questions. Of course, who knows how Pop answered the question about how long he expects to continue (as well as Duncan).

I don't know why anyone ever got caught up in that. He was never coming to the Spurs for less money, to play an ancillary role offensively and guard a position he no longer can defensively.

Less Ifs makes a scenario sound more realistic.
LeBron had that amount before picking the Heat, tbh. Standard procedure.
But are you really buying that when examined closely at all? Again, it is what it is. Hopefully that bold show of confidence makes the difference - it just seems illogical.
1) Explain the Suns who weren't even on the map, doing the exact opposite of what the Spurs did yet somehow moving way up the pecking order AFTER the Spurs met w/ LMA :lol? Suns spent all of their cap space on Tyson making it basically impossible to sign LMA unless the move a key player like Bledsoe.
2) If the Spurs were going to do that, then how do you explain turning down the draft day offers that very likely would have netted them a top 20 pick? If you are going to move Tiago to show LMA that there are less ifs, then not doing the draft day trade makes even less sense from an asset management perspective.
3) Lebron - the best player in the world that has had more media and hype is the only comparison so far? I can't think of another player with a 7+ team list. Even for huge FAs (excluding Lebron) this courting and circus seems well beyond "Standard Procedure".
Doesn't change anything - what's done is done - I just don't agree backing into the logic with these points.

Exactly. It is the decision that is going to change his life and help shape the rest of his career. I think he deserves to a little more than just 23 hours.

I have a question, have you ever celebrated anything or said anything positive about the Spurs when they have done positive things? On nights when they won the title did you celebrate as a fan or just think about he losses and doom and gloom all night? Also a good day when they retain Leonard and Green! They did not let them get away, were you happy about that?
the Spurs were fantastic today. Even though they lost Splitter, a lot of fans were very concerned that Splitter could not stay healthy. It's not the Spurs fault if in fact they were mislead by LMA.

Feels too much like when Webber had a chance to play with the Spurs and Robinson...seemed like an obvious choice at the time.
Saw an "open court" once where c Webb admitted the reason he turned down the spurs was because he wouldn't have earned any title he was a part of.

I think that's why we didn't get Gasol last year.

Any three-way Aldridge is involved in has to include Tyson Chandler.

Yeah, Pop doesn't seem like a "second meeting" guy. He's liable to conclude that LaMarcus needs to get over himself.

Quick, set up a meeting with DeAndre Jordan. Biggest Spurs selling point? Pop can't foul him if he's on his own team.

Tim retires, Tony is traded, and the Spurs tank the season for next year's FA class.

I wouldn't be annoyed. Free agency only began 23 hours ago (although it sure as hell seems longer lol). He will make a decision soon enough.

I'm not really too pleased with LaMarcus meeting this many teams. I understand about taking a little bit of time to make a decision, but surely you'd have a shortlist of teams that you will legitimately play for? I don't understand why he's wasting his time or other team's time meeting so many teams, especially teams like the Knicks and Raptors that I would say he has no intention of playing for. I would even throw the Lakers on that list.
And now he wants a second meeting? Not sure how Pop would react to that. Also, if this guy is that much of a pussy and is scared to even play one minute at center (hence the reason for him looking at Phoenix as they now have Tyson Chandler as their new full-time center), I don't know if I even want him. Surely, if needed, he can play a few minutes at center each game? Maybe the Spurs can look into getting Robin Lopez as a backup center just so LaMarcus doesn't have to play any center, but that is ridiculous if you ask me. If you want to win the Championship, and especially with the way the league is going now, you're going to have to play a bit of small ball, and LaMarcus would be the center in those lineups.

Pop and Becki would make sure he made 70% of his FT's minimum.

Just play along and nod your head. You're planning your next 2-7 years here. You listen to anyone who's willing to give you the time of day...and then shit on them like the Lakers. :lol :bobo
