Under Trump, Hill GOPers Struggle To Stay Focused On Their Own Goals

There is mounting frustration on Capitol Hill with how President Donald Trump has conducted himself in his first week and a half in office.

Trump's decision last week to roll out an executive order that restricted travel from seven-majority Muslim countries and temporarily halted the U.S. refugee program, reportedly without consulting his Capitol Hill, Justice Department or Department of Homeland Security, bruised egos and left congressional Republicans stunned. Some worried that this could be their new normal.

"I got the impression that the people who were briefing us know there needs to be more caution, I'm not sure the President knows that," said Sen. Chuck Grassley

plans keep getting overshadowed by a White House and President that shoots from the hip and goes ahead with their own agenda without even consulting the first branch of government.

Trump really is beginning to get in their way.

members who had gathered to hammer out a plan to repeal and replace the ACA spent much of the first day answering questions about Trump's false statement that millions of undocumented immigrants cost him the popular vote in the 2016 election.

I think any time you get away from our message, which is jobs, manufacturing, economy, defense, rebuilding the military, I think you derail the message."

senator after senator was forced to address a draft executive order showing Trump was open to re-examining the merits of torture as a method to gather intelligence, which the Senate voted to halt years ago.

"We view that to be a matter of settled law," Sen. John Thune

Senate Republicans have been forced to answer for Trump's too-cozy-for-comfort relationship with Russia, combative phone calls with U.S. allies like Australia and tendency to shun traditional Republican foreign policy norms.

more news breaks that forces Republican lawmakers to answer for Trump and that takes them away from their two main policy goals.

...and not one mention of President BANNON :lol

They're genuinely torn, twixt holding fast in the new ranks, or, jockeying around the curtain to their soft seat next to their Dem buddies where they'd been since Reagan left office.

They'd turn on Trump in a New York minute the moment he's IMMINENTLY terminal. They want to get back to BUSINESS AS USUAL so bad they can taste it.

& even Pence, bless his heart would sell him out as he took that oath= "We'll always be friends, I like Donald Trump, I really do, but, I am an American first and I'll never turn my back on our country."

Trump has his bloodline + me and perhaps that Kushner kid. The rest? Please.

It really is crazy the lengths Trump supporters will go to cover for him. It really is a cult-like following. His supporters will take his side no matter what he says. Always Team Trump. Always.

Trump says "we're not so innocent" (in reference to Putin murdering journalists). They say "yeah, we are just as bad! This country does terrible things! Let me tell you what a shitty country we have. Putin is good guy!"

They would choose him over country. Over family. Over Jesus. Trump IS their Jesus.

This thread title couldnt be any more fitting.

Melania Trump missed out on ‘once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’ to make millions, lawsuit says

An attorney for first lady Melania Trump argued in a lawsuit filed Monday that an article falsely alleging that she once worked for an escort service hurt her chance to establish “multimillion dollar business relationships” during the years in which she would be “one of the most photographed women in the world.”

The suit (https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/fbem/DocumentDisplayServlet?documentId=Yv9ua7eZrTT_PLUS _pEUque3HmQ==&system=prod) — filed Monday in New York Supreme Court, a state trial court, in Manhattan — against Mail Media, the owner of the Daily Mail, said the article published by the Daily Mail and its online division last August caused Trump’s brand, Melania, to lose “significant value” as well as “major business opportunities that were otherwise available to her.” The suit said the article had damaged her “unique, once in a lifetime opportunity” to “launch a broad-based commercial brand.”

“These product categories would have included, among other things, apparel accessories, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, hair care, skin care and fragrance,” according to the lawsuit, which was filed on Trump’s behalf by California attorney Charles Harder.

TRUMP ACCUSES MEDIA OF NOT REPORTING VOICES HE HEARS IN HEAD

TAMPA — In a blistering attack on the media, President Trump said on Monday that the press has consistently refused to report the voices he hears in his head every day.

Trump praised the “really terrific information” he gets from the voices, which often speak to him when he is roaming the White House in his bathrobe in the middle of the night.

“They tell me that I won by the most votes ever and had the biggest Inauguration crowd ever,” Trump said.

“These are fantastic voices and they’re doing a great job.”

Trump said the refusal to report what the voices tell him makes the media “the most dishonest people on earth.”

“There might be a hundred people protesting outside the White House, and at the exact same time, five hundred voices talking to me inside my head,” he said.

“Guess which the press will write about?”

Offering an example of the media’s deceitfulness, Trump referred to the widely circulated story about him hanging up on the Prime Minister of Australia.

“What they didn’t say is that I had to hang up because I was getting an incoming call in my head,” he said.

Trump said that because the voices in his head “keep saying that I’m the best President ever,” he does not expect the media to quote them anytime soon.

“If you want to find out what the voices in my head are saying,

don’t even bother reading the newspaper,” he said. “Follow me on Twitter.”

Donald Trump Keeps Pushing Alex Jones’ Conspiracy Theories

Yesterday, President Trump told yet another blatant falsehood (https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/02/trump-centcom-media-terror-cover-up/515823/), alleging that the media has covered up several terrorist attacks, a bogus claim (https://apnews.com/8206c29fe271498aa76e3feeb1e2f334/AP-FACT-CHECK:-Trump-says-terrorism-acts-ignored.-Evidence?) that became even more laughable when the White House released a list of widely-covered attacks (http://www.npr.org/2017/02/06/513777052/trump-says-media-fail-to-report-terrorist-attacks-white-house-promises-list) in a humiliating attempt to substantiate Trump’s assertion.

Trump, it seems, got the conspiracy theory that the media won’t report on terrorist attacks from InfoWars, the conspiracy theory outlet headed by Alex Jones.

As Aaron Blake of the Washington Post noted (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/02/06/trumps-suggestion-that-the-media-is-ignoring-terrorist-attacks-has-a-familiar-source-infowars/?utm_term=.ddb816429dd5), InfoWars has posted several stories calling out the media for supposedly whitewashing, hiding and covering up terrorist attacks.

While running for president, Trump appeared on Jones’ program where he lavished praise (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/donald-trump-tells-alex-jones-your-reputation-is-amazing/) on the bizarre conspiracy theorist (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/trumps-team-the-bigoted-unhinged-conspiracy-theorists-benefiting-from-donald-trumps-campaign/): “Your reputation is amazing. I will not let you down. You will be very, very impressed, I hope. I think we’ll be speaking a lot.”

Jones is far from the only conspiracy theorist embraced by Trump (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/trumps-team-the-bigoted-unhinged-conspiracy-theorists-benefiting-from-donald-trumps-campaign/), but he is one of the most influential.

Here are just five additional instances where Trump, himself a pathological liar (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/101-donald-trump-lies-the-gop-presidential-nominees-pathological-dishonesty/) and unhinged conspiracy theorist (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/58-donald-trump-conspiracy-theories-and-counting-the-definitive-trump-conspiracy-guide/), pushed Jones’ wild and baseless claims:

Trump invites speculation after offering to "destroy" Texas senator

President Donald Trump invited a wave of speculation Tuesday at the White House when he volunteered to "destroy" the career of a unnamed Texas state senator in response to a state sheriff's complaint about the lawmaker

Trump's remark came during a meeting with sheriffs at the White House that included Rockwall County's Harold Eavenson. When Trump asked the group for input on how to improve law enforcement, Eavenson spoke up.

"Asset forfeiture," Eavenson replied.

"We’ve got a state senator in Texas that’s talking about introducing legislation to require conviction before we can receive that forfeiture money

and I told him that the cartel would build a monument to him in Mexico if he could get that legislation passed."

“Who’s the state senator?” Trump asked, getting no answer from a demurring Eavenson.

“Want to give his name? We’ll destroy his career."

Shoker! Rediculous chocker Trump attaks and dishoners English with ever-dummer spellings.

Twenty-seven times, the White House memo misspelled “attacker” or “attackers” as “attaker” or “attakers.” San Bernardino lost its second “r.” “Denmark” became “Denmakr.”

I wish I could say this attack was unprecedented — or, as President Trump spells it, unpresidented (http://www.cnbc.com/2016/12/17/trump-faces-unpresidented-moment-on-twitter.html). But I cannot say that. Nothing has distinguished Trump, his aides and his loyal supporters more than their shared struggle with spelling.

The morning after his inauguration, Trump tweeted (http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2017/01/21/trump_deletes_tweet_after_writing_he_is_honered_to _serve.html): “I am honered to serve you, the great American People, as your 45th President of the United States!”

The honer is all ours, sir — just as it was exactly a year ago when you tweeted (http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/26/politics/donald-trump-spelling-debate-tweet/): “Every poll said I won the debate last night. Great honer!”

the Trump White House, in its official schedule, spelled her name wrong not once and not twice but thrice. Theresa May became Teresa May (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/01/27/white-house-spells-theresa-mays-name-wrong-three-times-memo/). Britons noticed the gaffe, as well they would: Teresa May is the name of a British former soft-porn actress and busty nude model.

“China steals United States Navy research drone in international waters — rips it out of water and takes it to China in unpresidented act.”

“Hillary Clinton should not be given national security briefings in that she is a lose cannon with extraordinarily bad judgement & insticts.”

That might have prevented him from labeling Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) a “lightweight chocker” and “always a chocker” after the senator choked in a GOP presidential debate.

Trump’s spelling chock was no shock. He attacked another primary opponent, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), by tweeting (https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/689519657414320128?lang=en): “Big shoker! People do not like Ted.”

Trump also tweeted (https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/693782388564865024?lang=en) that Cruz “will loose big to Hillary.”

Ridiculous became “rediculous (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/trump-denies-working-celebrity-apprentice-article-1.2905926),” Phoenix became “Phoneix (https://twitter.com/Tall_Guy92/status/711040986529419264?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)” (a felicitous phonics failure), and many paid attention when Trump proclaimed that he was not “bought and payed for (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/706674352167772160?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw).”

Trump let the sun set on basketball’s Bobby Knight, knighting him “Bobby Night (http://ftw.usatoday.com/2016/05/donald-trump-tweets-the-support-of-bobby-night-has-been-so-amazing).” And he put Barack Obama into military housing with an extra “r,” turning the then-president into Barrack (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/690636948864512000?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw).

he called MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/misspelled-tweets-president-elect-donald-trump-article-1.2911729) “one of the dummer people on television” or when he again used the un*or*tho*dox spelling of “judgement” in a tweet (https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/734365143635759104) accusing Clinton of “stupidity.”

a declaration of war practically writes itself. A proposed draft:

My Fellow Americans: You may be shoked by my military attak on the Kingdom of Denmakr.

You may think it is rediculous and one of the dummer things I have done, and I admit it is unpresidented to bomb a peaceful nation.

But my insticts and my judgement say we cannot afford to loose, for it would bring dishoner.

And so we do not go gently into that good knight.

We send our troops from their baracks until Denmakr’s aggressions are payed for.

Only then will Copenhagen rise like the Phoneix.

We will not falter, we will not fail — and we will not chock.

To commemorate Black History Month, Trump administration decrees that white supremacists can’t be terrorists

The Trump administration wants to revamp and rename a U.S. government program designed to counter all violent ideologies so that it focuses solely on Islamist extremism, five people briefed on the matter told Reuters.

The program, “Countering Violent Extremism,” or CVE, would be changed to “Countering Islamic Extremism” or “Countering Radical Islamic Extremism,” the sources said, and

would no longer target groups such as white supremacists who have also carried out bombings and shootings in the United States.

‘He doesn’t like this shit’: Trump reportedly hates his job and his staff after less than a month

After just three weeks on the job, President Donald Trump is reportedly frustrated with the realities of trying to run the U.S. government the way he manages his family-owned business.

Politico interviewed nearly two dozen people who have spent time with the former real estate developer and reality TV star since his inauguration — and they said Trump’s “mood has careened between surprise and anger as he’s faced the predictable realities of governing,” according to the report.

“The interviews paint a picture of a powder-keg of a workplace where

job duties are unclear,

morale among some is low,

factionalism is rampant and

exhaustion is running high,”

Politico reported. “Two visitors to the White House last week said they were struck by how tired the staff looks.”

Trump would like to shake up his White House staff less than a month into the job but knows it’s too soon, the website reported, and aides joke that the president would like to spend even more time golfing at his Mar-A-Lago resort.

Sources close to Trump said he’s infuriated by the profusion of leaks revealing his confrontational phone calls with world leaders and the herky-jerky inner workings of the White House.

TRUMP SAYS HE HAS BEEN TREATED VERY UNFAIRLY BY PEOPLE WHO WROTE CONSTITUTION

WASHINGTON — Hinting darkly that “there’s something going on,” Donald J. Trump complained on Friday that he has been treated “very unfairly” by the people who wrote the United States Constitution.

“If the Constitution prevented me from doing one or two things, I’d chalk that up to bad luck,” he said. “But

when literally everything I want to do is magically a violation of the Constitution, that’s very unfair and bad treatment.”
Lashing out at the document’s authors, Trump said that “America is a great country, but

we have maybe the worst constitution writers in the world.”

“Russia has much better constitution writers than we do,” he said. “I talked to

Putin, and he said their constitution never gives him problems.” :lol

“The situation is very unfair!” he added.

In an ominous warning, Trump said that, as of Friday, he was putting the writers of the U.S. Constitution “on notice.”

“I don’t have their names yet, but that’s something I’m looking into,” he said. “These jokers are not going to get away with this.”

GOP frantically dialing back GOP frets over too-high expectations

There’s serious concern that Trump and GOP leadership have simply identified too many big-ticket, politically thorny items to tackle in year one. They also see tough times ahead in prioritizing what to do.

“It’s not just the fact that there are a lot of items but the enormity of those items,” said GOP Rep. Daniel Webster, who learned how to manage a legislative calendar while serving as Speaker of the Florida state House.Another Republican lawmaker was even more blunt: “There’s no way we can do all these issues.”

The GOP’s 2017 calendar is already riddled with must-pass deadlines: Congress needs to fund the government before money runs out on April 28; raise the debt ceiling by this summer; and pass reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration by September, among other statutory deadlines.

Republicans also have begun dismantling a plethora of Obama-era regulations focused on the environment and other issues.
On top of that, Republicans hope to pass all 12 fiscal year 2018 appropriation bills before Oct. 1 — something that hasn’t been done in two decades.

Trump has talked of a $1 trillion infrastructure package — though conservatives on Capitol Hill have had heartburn over that proposal for some time.

“Think about it. We have two appropriations [processes] to do before Sept. 30, plus tax reform, the wall, infrastructure,” the GOP lawmaker said. “Any two would be Herculean."

it’s also fair to say that Trump-created distractions have slowed the GOP agenda as well.

Trump’s decision to sign an executive order halting refugees and banning travel from seven Muslim-majority nations without briefing congressional leaders set off confusion and mass protests at airports around the country.

The travel ban sparked several legal challenges and dominated an entire week of Trump’s nascent presidency.
And

Trump’s Twitter attacks on the media, senators, celebrities and companies like Nordstrom, as well as some heated phone calls with foreign leaders, have also kept Republicans in Washington on their toes.

Elections official asks Trump for evidence of voter fraud

A member of the Federal Election Commission on Friday called on President Donald Trump to share any evidence he has to support a statement that voter fraud caused him and former Senator Kelly Ayotte to lose in New Hampshire in the 2016 U.S. election.

“The scheme the President of the United States alleges would constitute thousands of felony criminal offenses under New Hampshire law,” FEC Commissioner Ellen Weintraub said in a statement. (http://bit.ly/2lAnk7t)

Trump blamed voter fraud for his and Ayotte’s losses in New Hampshire in November’s election while speaking on Thursday with a bipartisan group of U.S. senators, saying that Ayotte’s re-election bid was spoiled by “thousands” of people from neighboring Massachusetts voting in New Hampshire,

asked Trump to “immediately share his evidence with the public and with the appropriate law-enforcement authorities so that his allegations may be investigated promptly and thoroughly.”

Trump said on Sunday he would put Vice President Mike Pence in charge of a special commission to investigate voter fraud, despite numerous studies showing that such fraud is rare in the United States.

Trump has said that fraud may account for his loss nationwide in the popular vote to Clinton by nearly 3 million votes.

Trump vs. the CIA (http://www.counterpunch.org/2017/02/10/trump-vs-the-cia/)

Donald Trump’s actions have already pointed to an effort to politicize the key institutions of the national security community, so it is likely that

the Central Intelligence Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency will be pressed to provide a rationale for a travel ban based on intelligence reporting.

The atmosphere for politicization has already been created.

Trump’s initial visits to CIA headquarters and to the Pentagon were outrageous examples of politicization, using the occasions to congratulate high-ranking intelligence and military officers for their support in the presidential election and to condemn the media.

The appointment of former representative Mike Pompeo, a severe critic of the CIA, pointed to the possibility of spinning the intelligence message for the White House. His only predecessors from Capitol Hill, Tenet and Porter Goss, certainly did so.

And the venture to the Pentagon to sign the Muslim ban was an obvious effort to humiliate Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, who was opposed to such policies in his confirmation testimony. It was totally gratuitous to sign the executive order on the Muslim ban at the Pentagon.

In order to get the benefit of the doubt from the judiciary, the Trump administration will need to make a case that links the Islamic world to international terrorism.

There are too many examples of the misuse of intelligence information to justify extreme political actions and even the use of force itself.

In the final analysis, the only protection against politicization is the integrity and honesty of the intelligence analysts themselves.

The appointment of reliable political actors as the director of national intelligence (former senator Dan Coats) and

the director of the CIA (former representative Pompeo) as well as the appointment of general officers to assignments

that should be in the hands of civilians (national security adviser, secretary of defense, secretary of homeland security) provides no assurance of genuine safeguards against politicization.

A neophyte at the Department of State (Rex Tillerson) only adds to the concern.

it seems particularly outrageous for the White House to create a false security challenge over the role of immigration in U.S. security policy.

The fact that Iran is our de facto ally against the Islamic State in Iraq is entirely lost on the Islamophobes in Trump’s inner circle.

Why Trump Has Declared War on the Judiciary

He’s making things awkward for his SCOTUS nominee and hurting his chances in court. What’s his endgame?

There is no longer any doubt that President Trump is at war with the federal judiciary. The more the courts align against him (https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/02/trump-tried-to-intimidate-the-judges-over-his-ban-and-he-failed/516294/), crossing virtually all ideological and political divisions to do so, the more he insists they are partisan and “political” and willfully endangering the country. The only questions remaining are how this will affect the Neil Gorsuch nomination and why Trump is waging this particular war

The outcry against Trump’s not-so-veiled threats was swift and bipartisan. But the president didn’t stop. On Wednesday, the day after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments over the travel ban, Trump accused the judges—who at that point were still considering the case—of playing politics (http://www.latimes.com/politics/washington/la-na-essential-washington-updates-trump-blasts-horrible-dangerous-and-1486563537-htmlstory.html).

He also took to Twitter to suggest, again, that a future terror attack would be the responsibility of the judges hearing the appeal:

To be clear, what the president is doing is blaming the court for politicizing the court. By acting like a court.

Nobody should be surprised that there are now reports of threats against the federal judges (http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/09/politics/judges-threatened-immigration-order/) who heard the appeal at the 9th circuit. ( Bannon's white nationalists/militia dickless goons acting like Mafia killing judges in Italy )Those threats have prompted federal and local law enforcement to increase security protection for those judges.

“President Trump is not threatening a judge, and he’s not encouraging any form of lawlessness,” Leo said. :lol:lol:lol

No matter how often or how loudly you say that attacks on individual jurists don’t threaten the judiciary or judicial independence, anybody with eyes can see that is what’s happening.

Although Gorsuch’s own spokesman confirmed his remarks, Trump responded by insisting that Blumenthal was lying (http://www.politico.com/story/2017/02/trump-neil-gorsuch-richard-blumenthal-feud-234833) and by noting that Blumenthal didn’t serve in Vietnam. And look at that squirrel over there!

Trump has now tied his nominee to a larger debate about the rule of law and the role of the judiciary.

That’s a debate the Senate will now take up in Gorsuch’s confirmation hearing, and one that the nominee will not be able to sidestep with claims that the issue may come before him at the Supreme Court.

For another, I suspect that Gorsuch will be alarmed enough by the fact that his colleagues on the federal bench are receiving death threats and extra security details that he will find it very hard to do anything but continue to condemn the president

What is Trump’s grand plan here? Mostly, I continue to believe that

his attacks on the judicial branch are deliberately destabilizing for their own sake

and that they are deliberately politicizing a branch of government (http://www.wnd.com/2017/02/trump-must-break-judicial-power/) about which Gorsuch cares a good deal.

Trump wants to lose in court or because Trump and Steve Bannon want to delegitimize the court system more generally feels immaterial. No judge will stand for it. They are well aware of the stakes here.

it becomes ever harder for Neil Gorsuch to avoid wading in to this fight. At this point, staying on the sidelines during Trump’s war against the judiciary feels like an abdication of fundamental responsibilities.

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/jurisprudence/2017/02/why_donald_trump_has_declared_war_on_the_judiciary .html

Aggressive questioning of Gorsuch by the Dems about threats to judges and Trash/Bannon attacking the judiciary as "unfair" could force Gorsuch to side with the judiciary against Trash's attacks.

Trump Threatens Iranian President As Worst Presidency Ever Gets Closer To War

Asked how he plans to respond to Iranian President Rouhani, who said earlier today that any nation that threatens Iran will "regret" it, President Trump responded, "He better be careful."

Iranian President Rouhani, who said earlier today that any nation that threatens Iran will “regret” it.Trump responded on Air Force One Friday evening on the way to Mar-a-Lago with a threat according to a pool report sent to PoliticusUSA, “He better be careful.”

“Some inexperienced figures in the region and America are threatening Iran,” Reuters (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-iran-anniversary-idUSKBN15P0QV?il=0) reported the Iranian President saying earlier.

“They should know the language of threats has never worked with Iran.

We are not seeking tension but we are united before bullying and any threat.”

Naturally Trump responded to this with more threatening language, because

when it comes to nuclear war, it’s all about who can be the biggest thug in Trump world.

The man who carelessly left a classified bag out on his desk with the key in it (http://www.politicususa.com/2017/02/10/democratic-senator-busts-trump-making-america-safe-recklessly-handling-intel.html)

as non-cleared people traipsed through his office has just threatened the Iranian President.

Oh, and the man giving Trump all of his national security advice was busted for working behind then President Obama’s back with Moscow to possibly undermine American sanctions against Russia. (http://www.politicususa.com/2017/02/10/intel-suggesting-trump-compromised-russia-gaining-credibility.html) You know, Moscow, who influenced our election in Trump’s favor.

So sure, all is well here. Nothing to see.

In Meeting With Senators, Trump Referred to Elizabeth Warren as ‘Pocahontas’ Several Times

In a meeting with Democratic and Republican members of the Senate, President Donald Trump brought up a couple of blasts from the past.

According to Politico, (http://www.politico.com/story/2017/02/trump-voter-fraud-senators-meeting-234909) Trump told the ten senators sitting in the room that he would have won New Hampshire in the election (http://lawnewz.com/high-profile/trump-brings-up-illegal-votes-again-says-its-why-he-lost-new-hampshire/) if there wouldn’t have been thousands of people bused in from Massachusetts to illegally vote.

This was, of course, doubling down on his previous, unsubstantiated claims of massive voter fraud.

According to participants in Thursday’s meeting, Trump referred to Warren several times as “Pocahontas,” the moniker he gave her during his campaign, and told the Democrats he was glad Warren is becoming the face of “your party.”

Al Franken to Maher: GOP senators privately express ‘great concern’ about Trump’s temperament

Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) said Friday night that his Republican Senate colleagues privately express “great concern” about President Trump's temperament, and he joked about the GOP eventually impeaching Trump.

Franken joked: “Well, there's a range in what they'll say, and some will say that he's not right mentally. And some are harsher.”

“No, no. That's not fair. That was cheap,” he continued. “There are some who I guess don't talk to me.”

Franken then got a bit more serious.

“I haven't heard a lot of good things, and I've heard great concern about the president's temperament,” he said.

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) has said his GOP colleagues privately worry about Trump's “incompetence” and “ethics.” (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/sherrod-brown-republicans-trump_us_58922d65e4b0e35f0fb3d204)

Pressure From Russia Scandal Has Trump Administration Spiraling Out Of Control

The intrigue, fighting and back-stabbing within the Trump administration just three weeks in is enough to compete with the War of the Roses.

After causing Vice President Pence to lie to the press and public about Flynn’s contact with Russia, Trump’s National Security Adviser Michael Flynn seems to be trying rather desperately to repair his relationship Pence.“

A senior administration official said Flynn and Pence spoke in person Friday morning and by phone in the evening,” the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/flynn-holds-call-with-pence-amid-calls-for-probes-of-contacts-with-russian-ambassador/2017/02/10/f8fb83a0-efe1-11e6-9973-c5efb7ccfb0d_story.html?hpid=hp_rhp-top-table-main_flynn-820pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&utm_term=.97d17f76e1dd).

“National security adviser Michael Flynn spoke privately with Vice President Pence on Friday in an apparent attempt to contain the fallout from the disclosure that Flynn had discussed U.S. sanctions on Russia with that country’s ambassador and then allowed Pence and other White House officials to publicly deny that he had done so (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/face-the-nation-transcript-january-15-2017-pence-manchin-gingrich/), an administration official said.”

The Trump power vacuum from the top had led to even more chaotic upheaval, exemplified by Donald Trump not even realizing that he signed an executive order appointing alt-right Leninist Steve Bannon to the National Security Council (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/05/us/politics/trump-white-house-aides-strategy.html).

New Jersey congressman invokes 1924 tax law giving Congress power to examine Trump's tax returns (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/2/11/1632589/-New-Jersey-congressman-invokes-1924-tax-law-giving-Congress-power-to-examine-Trump-s-tax-returns)

Rep. Bill Pascrell (NJ-09) serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and he wants to use a 1924 tax law that allows Congress to examine tax returns for the purpose of determining whether conflicts of interest exist, even if those tax returns belong to the president. From NorthJersey.com: (http://www.northjersey.com/story/news/new-jersey/2017/02/10/pascrell-rarely-used-law-could-make-trump-tax-returns-public/97755792/)

After privately examining returns -- Pascrell is seeking 10 years' worth -- the committee could decide to share them with the full House, which would in effect make them public.

The 1924 law gives congressional committees that set tax policy the power to examine tax returns.

It was used in 1974 when Congress looked at President Richard Nixon's returns, and

in 2014 when the Ways and Means Committee released confidential tax information (https://waysandmeans.house.gov/event/markup-of-referral-to-the-honorable-eric-h-holder-jr-attorney-general-of-former-internal-revenue-service-exempt-organizations-division-director-lois-g-lerner-for-possible-criminal-prosecution/) as part of its investigation into the Internal Revenue Service's handling of applications for nonprofit status

If Sen. Mitch McConnell can invoke the rarely used “Rule 19”, Rep. Pascrell and Congress are well within their rights to evoke this 1924 tax code and do what the law requires to ensure there are no conflicts of interest. Pascrell said he’s not going to take “no” for answer:

Pascrell said foreign governments are paying rents, licensing fees, and issuing permits for Trump Organization projects, all of which could be used to influence the president. The letter asked Brady to reply by Wednesday.

“If I get a ‘no’ answer on this, I’ll be very honest with you:

If these guys think I’m walking away from this, they’re absolutely nuts," Pascrell said.

"The calls we’re getting, the calls other congressmen are getting, it’s unbelievable, we never expected this.”

Gorka did go the extra step of writing an NYT bestseller, Defeating Jihad: The Winnable War, but his work still isn’t taken seriously by experts in national security. Allegra Kirkland writes (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/sebastian-gorka-washington-experts-dc-anti-islam-ties?utm_content=buffer3c71e&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer):

Some foreign policy and counterterrorism experts declined to speak to TPM on the record because of Gorka’s position in the new administration. But others characterized him as a peripheral figure whose hardline ideas about Islam and the threat posed by the Islamic State terror group place him firmly outside the mainstream.

“I’d heard the name once or twice but he’s not a major figure in the field. He’s not someone whose work one needs to know to be conversant in these issues,” Stephen Biddle, an adjunct senior fellow for defense policy at the Council on Foreign Relations and professor of political science at George Washington University, told TPM.

Biddle added that Gorka is not “in the reasonable mainstream.” Omid Safi, director of Islamic Studies at Duke University, was much more biting in his assessment, labeling Gorka’s book “propaganda.”

“He opines on everything from the Koran to Mohamad to jihad to Islamic history to contemporary politics but does so in a way that is inaccurate, sloppy, superficial, bigoted and ideological,” Safi said.

Gorka used to appear regularly on the radio show of noted anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist Frank Gaffney.

Gaffney has heavily promoted the conspiracy theory that members of the Muslim Brotherhood have infiltrated the U.S. government and argued that the Council on American Islamic Relations, a civil rights group, is affiliated with terrorists.

Gorka has made the same arguments (http://www.wnd.com/2016/06/sebastian-gorkas-plan-to-defeat-isis-simple-but-devastating/) himself. He has also said that

accepting Muslim refugees would be “national suicide (http://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2016/11/16/dr-sebastian-gorka-refugee-crisis-helping-people-not-contract-national-suicide/)” and that religious profiling of Muslims is a “synonym for common sense (https://theintercept.com/2016/06/30/former-donald-trump-adviser-calls-racial-profiling-common-sense/).”

A hastily called news conference caps a surreal day for Trump in South Florida

A couple of hours later, the news media were led through the gates of Trump’s estate and allowed to witness the two couples standing at the main entrance of the property for what was billed as a photo spray. Reporters, who were asked not to shout questions, did so anyway.

Trump answered some of them, allowing that he and Abe were having a “very, very good” visit and that during the golf outing, “we got to know each other very, very well.”

But the president ignored several other questions, including whether he planned to watch “Saturday Night Live” and whether he had anything to say about reports of a ballistic missile launched by North Korea — the first such provocation during Trump’s presidency.

At that point, the press corps traveling with Trump was whisked back to the Marriott hotel that has served as its home base for the weekend. Trump aides called a “lid,” meaning there were no more planned Trump appearance or travels for the night.

About an hour later, after many of members of the media had decamped to the hotel bar or ventured out for their first real meal of the day,

a Trump aide sent an “URGENT” message saying the press pool needed to reassemble immediately :lol for unstated reasons. It turned out Trump did have something to say about North Korea.

Reporters were then taken back to a heavily secured yet bustling Mar-a-Lago. Despite its designation by Trump as his “winter White House,” other events continue to be held on the property.

Trump then took his turn at the lectern, offering this brief statement:

“I just want everybody to understand and fully know that the United States of America stands behind Japan, its great ally, 100 percent.”

Trump made no mention of South Korea, another U.S. ally in the region,

nor did he explicitly condemn North Korea's action. :lol

The two men exited the room without taking questions.

As reporters were ushered out, another “lid” was called, ending a long day of Trump movements.

All that was left was the latest episode of “Saturday Night Live,” in which actor Alec Baldwin continued to lampoon the new president.

The 25th Amendment, explained: how a president can be declared unfit to serve

If the VP and Cabinet conclude a president is unwell, they can legally do something about it.

what would happen if the president, in the judgment of those closest to him, were to … not be in his right mind?

In such a scenario, there is, in fact, something that could quickly and legally be done to avert global catastrophe. The answer lies in Section 4 of the 25th Amendment (https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/amendmentxxv) to the Constitution.
The amendment states that if, for whatever reason, the vice president and a majority of sitting Cabinet secretaries decide that the president is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” they can simply put that down in writing and send it to two people — the speaker of the House and the Senate’s president pro tem.

Then the vice president would immediately become “Acting President,” and take over all the president’s powers.

Let that sink in — one vice president and any eight Cabinet officers can, theoretically, decide to knock the president out of power at any time.

http://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/2/9/14488980/25th-amendment-trump-pence

I bet the Repugs do it, sooner or later, maybe well before Trash and his asshole team screw the Repugs in the 2018 midterm election campaign.

The Repugs would MUCH rather have establishment extremist, party-line Pence than sicko, distracting Trash.

And 8 Cabinet members could be convinced to do it by telling them they would keep their positions after flushing Trash.

Trump’s Watered-Down Ethics Rules Allow Lobbyists To Run The Swamp

Geoff Burr spent much of the last decade as the chief lobbyist for a powerful construction industry trade group. Burr sought to (http://disclosures.house.gov/ld/ldxmlrelease/2015/2A/300785714.xml)influence (http://disclosures.house.gov/ld/ldxmlrelease/2015/3A/300785720.xml) a host of regulations of the Department of Labor, opposing wage standards (http://www.abc.org/NewsMedia/NewsReleases/tabid/144/entryid/2257/abc-celebrates-u-s-district-court-s-ruling-against-davis-bacon-expansion.aspx) for federal construction contracts, and working against an effort (http://www.abc.org/NewsMedia/NewsReleases/tabid/144/entryid/1888/abc-calls-osha-s-proposed-crystalline-silica-rule-unworkable-joins-safety-coalition-in-asking-for-withdrawal.aspx) to limit workers’ exposure to dangerous silica dust (https://www.osha.gov/silica/).

In the Obama administration, someone like Burr would have been barred by ethics rules from taking a job at an agency that he had lobbied.

In the Trump administration, Burr now has a top job (https://www.propublica.org/article/labor-department-hire-could-presage-collision-trump-construction-unions) at the Labor Department.

Burr is the first publicly known example of a former lobbyist who was able to take a job in the government as a result of President Donald Trump’s watering down (http://www.politico.com/story/2017/01/trump-lobbying-ban-weakens-obama-ethics-rules-234318) of ethics rules in place during the Obama administration.

As a candidate, Trump regularly railed against lobbyists and led crowds in chants of “Drain the swamp!” :lol TRASH LIED

But as president, Trump last month signed an executive order that weakened (http://www.politico.com/story/2017/01/trump-lobbying-ban-weakens-obama-ethics-rules-234318) significant aspects of the Obama ethics policy, including scrapping a ban on lobbyists joining agencies they had recently lobbied.

White House Trashes The Constitution With Claim Trump Has Unquestioned Presidential Power

Perhaps there is someone left in the world who isn't aware of Donald Trump's troubling relationship with the Constitution. If so, this is for you.

(https://twitter.com/FaceTheNation)✔@FaceTheNation (https://twitter.com/FaceTheNation)

WH Sr. Policy Adviser Stephen Miller:

"The powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned"

Marbury v. Madison elevated the Supreme Court to a separate and equal branch of government, and here is the key part for any Trump supporters- that means federal courts have the right of judicial review. Literally, Donald Trump’s executive orders are subject to review by this co-equal branch of government.

But this is so basic, it’s just another moment when I pause to wonder if

these people are purposefully testing our system to see how much we will put up with before we oust them.

The only reason I’m not going with that theory is because they seem genuinely too ignorant to maintain such a rouse.

Making America Great Again;

the courts will not question the Trump.

Trump has all power.

Constitution bad.

Three branches of government BAD.

Not getting everything he wants when he wants it makes Trump SAD

The Trump Organization is making new foreign deals, despite promising not to: report

Trump promised there would be no new deals, but guess what his brand is now pushing for

Despite promising not to engage in any foreign deals while Donald Trump is president, there are now reports that the Trump Organization is going ahead with developing resorts in Scotland and the Dominican Republic.

“The Trump organization reportedly is moving ahead with plans for resorts in Scotland and the Dominican Republic,” NPR reported (http://www.npr.org/2017/02/13/514935064/despite-pledge-not-to-trump-group-expected-to-advance-foreign-deals?utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=business&utm_medium=social&utm_term=nprnews).

It was first reported on Thursday (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/dominican-deal-tests-trumps-pledge-foreign-deals-45380003) that the Trump Organization was reviving a licensing deal for a beach resort in the Dominican Republic.

This raised alarms, especially given that Trump lawyer Sheri Dillon had reassured reporters (http://www.salon.com/2017/01/11/trump-business-will-pursue-us-deals-but-not-foreign-ones/) at a January press conference (http://www.salon.com/2017/01/11/this-will-not-end-well-president-elect-trumps-first-press-conference-was-a-total-disaster/) that “no new foreign deals will be made whatsoever during the duration of President Trump’s presidency.”

In addition to posing conflicts of interest for Trump’s presidency (such as excluding Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates from his Muslim ban (http://www.salon.com/2017/02/04/this-week-in-donald-trumps-conflicts-of-interest-banning-muslims-doesnt-have-to-mean-banning-profits/), which is oddly coincidental given that he has business in those three countries), Trump’s actions in Scotland and the Dominican Republic could wind up violating the Emoluments Clause (http://www.salon.com/2016/12/21/conflicts-on-top-of-conflicts-another-emoluments-clause-that-should-bar-donald-trump-from-office/) of the Constitution.

If Trump accepts any form of financial compensation from foreign governments as president, he would be in violation of the so-called “foreign emoluments clause” of Article I of the Constitution.

Is Trash gonna WIN this lost battle in the BOGUS War on Coal?

The West’s coal giant is closing way ahead of schedule

Since construction began in 1969, the coal plant and its associated mine on Black Mesa have provided millions of dollars to the Navajo and Hopi tribes and hundreds of jobs to local communities, as well as electricity to keep the lights on and air conditioners humming in the metastasizing cities of Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. Yet, they’ve also stood as symbols of the exploitation of Native Americans, of the destruction of the land, and of the sullying of the air, all to provide cheap power to the Southwest.

the plant’s four private utility owners, led by the Salt River Project, voted to shut down the plant at the end of 2019, some 25 years ahead of schedule. When the giant turbines come to a halt and the towers topple in the coming years, the plant will become a new symbol, this one of a transforming energy economy and an evolving electrical grid that is slowly rendering these soot-stained, mechanical megaliths obsolete.

The closure will deeply wound local economies, particularly in Page, LeChee, Kaibeto, and Kayenta

935 — Full-time employees in 2014 of Navajo Generating Station, the Kayenta Coal Mine on Black Mesa, which exists only to fuel the plant, and the 78-mile electric railroad that carries coal from the mine to the plant.

90 — Percent of those workers that are Native American (http://www.hcn.org/issues/46.5/navajo-nation-bets-on-coal).

$141,500 — Average payroll expenditure per employee (wages, salaries, benefits, etc.)

The air (and water and land) will be a lot cleaner without Navajo Generating Station, one of the biggest polluters in the West

20 million metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent — Amount of greenhouse gases emitted by the power plant (carbon dioxide) and the mine (methane) each year.

8.6 million metric tons CO2 — Amount of greenhouse gases emitted yearly by a natural gas plant generating the same amount of electricity as the Navajo Generating Station. This does not account for leaks during natural gas production (http://www.hcn.org/issues/47.15/in-the-southwests-four-corners-methane-has-a-dark-side), processing, transportation (http://www.hcn.org/articles/natural-gas-pipeline-incidents-scary-exacerbate-climate-change-methane), and storage (http://www.hcn.org/articles/slow-motion-methane-disaster-in-california).

472, 4370, 259 — Pounds of mercury, selenium, and arsenic, respectively, that spew from the power plant’s smokestacks each year. These elements are toxic to wildlife and humans and have shown up in relatively high concentrations in fish in the Grand Canyon and the San Juan River upstream from Lake Powell, as well as in precipitation at Mesa Verde National Park. Natural gas combustion emits only negligible amounts of these elements.

1.3 million — Tons of coal combustion waste (http://www.hcn.org/issues/359/17374) produced by the plant each year, about 75 percent of which is disposed of nearby, with the rest sold for use in other applications (http://www.hcn.org/articles/17384).

Economics, not the so-called war on coal or federal environmental protections, is the primary factor shutting down the planthttp://grist.org/article/the-wests-coal-giant-is-closing-way-ahead-of-schedule/

Meet the 23 Republicans blocking Congress from seeing Trump's tax returns (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/2/15/1634026/-Meet-the-23-Republicans-blocking-Congress-from-seeing-Trump-s-tax-returns-Is-your-rep-on-the-list)

http://images.dailykos.com/images/366594/story_image/ways_copy.jpg?1487178779

Regardless of party affiliation, an astonishing 74 percent of Americans want to see Donald Trump's tax returns (http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/314483-almost-three-quarters-of-americans-want-trump-to-release-tax-returns). (http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/314483-almost-three-quarters-of-americans-want-trump-to-release-tax-returns)

It makes sense considering Donald Trump has business all over the world and we really don’t know who his business comrades are, how much he owes, how much they pay him. These are relevant in the interest of government transparency, but more importantly in the interest of national security.

Last week, Rep. Bill Pascrell (NJ-09), said he intended to use a 1924 tax law that allowed members of the House Ways and Means Committee to privately examine tax returns to determine if there are conflicts of interest or Constitutional violations: (http://www.northjersey.com/story/news/new-jersey/2017/02/10/pascrell-rarely-used-law-could-make-trump-tax-returns-public/97755792/)

After privately examining returns -- Pascrell is seeking 10 years' worth -- the committee could decide to share them with the full House, which would in effect make them public.

The 1924 law gives congressional committees that set tax policy the power to examine tax returns.

It was used in 1974 when Congress looked at President Richard Nixon's returns, and in 2014 when the Ways and Means Committee released confidential tax information (https://waysandmeans.house.gov/event/markup-of-referral-to-the-honorable-eric-h-holder-jr-attorney-general-of-former-internal-revenue-service-exempt-organizations-division-director-lois-g-lerner-for-possible-criminal-prosecution/) as part of its investigation into the Internal Revenue Service's handling of applications for nonprofit status.

Yesterday Pascrell introduced the amendment to see Trump’s returns and voted straight down party line to reject it. (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/2/15/1633993/-Trump-tax-returns-and-Russia-ties-they-might-show-can-stay-secret-thanks-to-House-Republicans)

Republicans block independent inquiry of Kremlingate, which might set bar for 'all future scandals' (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/2/15/1634107/-Republicans-block-independent-inquiry-of-Kremlingate-which-might-set-bar-for-all-future-scandals)

GOP House Intelligence chair Devin Nunes pretty much summed up (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/02/15/1634078/-Calls-for-expanded-Russia-investigation-enrage-House-intelligence-chair) the standard Republican line on launching an independent investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia during an election that was heavily tainted by Russian interference.

“There is not going to be one; I can tell you there is absolutely not going to be one. And I am not going to be lectured by people who are speaking out of both sides of their mouths."

While investigations continue behind closed doors in the House and Senate intelligence committees, launching an independent commission would be much more public and impossible for Republicans to contain.

But while the GOP continues its “nothing to see here” routine,

everyone who isn't a Congressional Republican is convinced this is likely the biggest scandal they've seen since Watergate. Take it from a seasoned reporter, an independent senator, and a retired military officer.

Head of U.S. Special Ops says that America’s government is in “unbelievable turmoil”

Army Gen. Raymond "Tony" Thomas didn't offer specifics but said he wants the government as "stable as possible"

Army Gen. Raymond “Tony” Thomas, the head of US Special Operations Command, bemoaned the “unbelievable turmoil” racking the United States government during a symposium in Maryland on Tuesday.

“Our government continues to be in unbelievable turmoil. I hope they sort it out soon because we’re a nation at war,” Thomas said in his speech (http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/14/politics/us-special-ops-government-turmoil/), according to CNN. Although he didn’t specify what “turmoil” he was referring to, he clarified when later asked about his comments, saying, “As a commander, I’m concerned our government be as stable as possible.”

The Special Operations troops include Navy SEALs (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwif8I3qhJXSAhUnilQKHfjvB3MQFggaMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.salon.com%2F2017%2F01%2F31%2F trumps-first-military-operation-kills-one-navy-seal-and-civilians-in-yemen-raid%2F&usg=AFQjCNHM2VeUaFpzL-mneAVQRhTwbLqaqQ&sig2=L48TFXA8oQxCOXAYvbHh1A&bvm=bv.147134024,d.cGw) and the Army Green Berets, both of which have become increasingly prominent in military operations since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and which are equally prominent in our national folklore.

While it is unclear what Thomas was referring to,

it is quite possible that he was discussing the war that has been ongoing between the so-called “deep state (http://www.salon.com/2017/02/16/is-michael-flynn-the-first-casualty-of-a-deep-state-coup-its-not-unthinkable/)” and the Trump administration.

Critics have accused (http://www.salon.com/2017/02/16/is-michael-flynn-the-first-casualty-of-a-deep-state-coup-its-not-unthinkable/) America’s intelligence agencies of trying to promote an anti-Russian agenda and punishing both President Trump and various administration advisers with targeted leaks intended to discredit them.

There are also reports (http://www.salon.com/2017/02/16/the-battle-against-leaks-trump-and-his-allies-are-declaring-war-on-an-intelligence-community-that-doesnt-trust-them/) that members of intelligence communities, convinced that the Trump administration has been compromised by the Russian government,

has withheld information from the president in order to avoid having it leaked out.

‘He should do this with a therapist, not on TV’: Republican senator blasts Trump’s bonkers presser

PVL so-called Pres. Donald Trump’s wild and unhinged press conference (https://www.rawstory.com/2017/02/it-was-festivus-cnns-jake-tapper-tears-into-trumps-wild-and-unhinged-press-conference/) on Thursday set tongues wagging across the Internet (http://www.rawstory.com/2017/02/trump-just-gave-a-weapons-grade-crazy-press-conference-here-are-the-6-most-insane-moments/) and, apparently, in the halls of Congress as well.CNN’s John King said he received a message from a Republican senator who wrote,

“He should do this with a therapist, not on live television.”

At what was ostensibly meant to be the announcement of Trump’s new nomination for Secretary of Labor on Thursday, the president

launched into a series of long-winded tirades (http://www.rawstory.com/2017/02/trump-just-gave-a-weapons-grade-crazy-press-conference-here-are-the-6-most-insane-moments/) where he

Anti-Defamation League: Trump Not Directly Addressing Anti-Semitism Is ‘Mind-Boggling’ (http://www.mediaite.com/online/anti-defamation-league-trump-not-directly-addressing-anti-semitism-is-mind-boggling/)

For the second day in a row, President Trump addressed anti-Semitism during a press conference, and also for the second day in a row, the Anti-Defamation League was positively stunned by how he handled it.

Yesterday, Trump started off his answer (http://www.mediaite.com/online/trump-answers-question-about-rise-in-anti-semitism-by-citing-size-of-electoral-college-victory/) to a question about anti-Semitism by invoking his electoral college win. The ADL responded in a tweet (http://www.mediaite.com/online/the-anti-defamation-league-has-responded-to-trumps-troubling-comments-on-anti-semitism/) that it was “troubling” he didn’t “condemn the real issue of anti-Semitism” in America today.

Well, today Trump got another question on the matter (http://www.mediaite.com/online/trump-tells-reporter-from-jewish-outlet-to-sit-down-and-be-quiet-when-asked-about-anti-semitism/). The reporter brought up recent bomb threats against Jewish centers across the country and other anti-Semitic acts going on. Trump immediately scolded the reporter, told him to sit down, and said, “I am the least anti-Semitic person that you’ve ever seen in your entire life.”

ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt and ADL National Chair Marvin Nathan issued the following statement (http://www.adl.org/press-center/press-releases/anti-semitism-usa/adl-president-trumps-repeated-dodging-of-questions-on-anti-semitism.html#.WKY6MBIrKRu) in response:

On two separate occasions over the past two days, President Trump has refused to say what he is going to do about rising anti-Semitism or to even condemn it. It is mind-boggling why President Trump prefers to shout down a reporter or brush this off as a political distraction. This is not a partisan issue. It’s a potentially lethal problem — and it’s growing.

In light of the bomb scares (http://www.adl.org/press-center/press-releases/miscellaneous/adl-expands-security-training-with-fbi.html#.WKY3TxIrKRs), online harassment (http://www.adl.org/press-center/press-releases/anti-semitism-usa/task-force-report-anti-semitic-harassment-journalists-twitter-2016-campaign.html#.WKY3UxIrKRt), physical vandalism, death threats and other hate crimes (http://www.adl.org/press-center/press-releases/anti-semitism-usa/adl-deeply-concerned-over-reports-of-anti-semitic-incidents-following-election.html#.WKY3VRIrKRs), there is a simple question at hand that Americans of all faiths deserve an answer to – what is the Trump Administration going to do about the recent surge of anti-Semitism? What concrete steps will the White House take to address intolerance?

We are going to keep asking these questions – and urge others in the press and public to do so as well – until we get a clear answer from our President.

Trump clashes with Jewish reporter over anti-Semitism question

Toward the end of a 77-minute press conference, Trump searched the room “to find a friendly reporter,” before landing on Jake Turx of Ami Magazine, a Jewish publication.

“What we are concerned about and what we haven’t really heard you address is the uptick in anti-Semitism and how you intend to take care of it,” the reporter said, citing statistics that indicated a recent rise in anti-Semitic acts.

Turx prefaced his question by saying he hasn’t seen “anyone in my community accuse either yourself or anyone on your staff of being anti-Semitic.”“See he said he was going to ask a very simple question and it’s not,” Trump shot back.

“It’s not a simple or fair question. Sit down, I understand the rest of your question.”

Here Are Your Highlights of Today's Trump Press Meltdown (http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2017/02/here-are-your-highlights-todays-trump-press-meltdown)

To be honest, I inherited a mess. It’s a mess. At home and abroad, a mess....I just want to let you know, I inherited a mess....ISIS has spread like cancer — another mess I inherited....And you look at Schumer and the mess that he’s got over there and they have nothing going.

Fact check: Delusional. Trump inherited an economy in pretty good shape. Crime has steadily decreased over the past decade. ISIS is losing ground and close to defeat. Illegal immigration has been stable for many years. Test scores for schoolkids are up. Fewer than a dozen American soldiers have died in combat in the past year. Obamacare has cut the number of people without health insurance almost in half. The budget deficit is down to 3 percent of GDP. After years of stagnation, wages are finally starting to go up. Unemployment and inflation are both low.

I put it out before the American people, got 306 electoral college votes....270 which you need, that was laughable. We got 306 because people came out and voted like they’ve never seen before so that’s the way it goes. I guess it was the biggest electoral college win since Ronald Reagan.

Fact check: Also delusionial. He got 304 electoral votes, and Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, and Obama all did better.

We’ve begun preparing to repeal and replace Obamacare....I know you can say, oh, Obamacare. I mean, they fill up our rallies with people that you wonder how they get there, but they are not the Republican people our that representatives are representing.

Fact check: Plausible! Trump and the Republicans in Congress probably do think they represent only Republicans.
The leaks are real. You’re the one that wrote about them and reported them, I mean the leaks are real. You know what they said, you saw it and the leaks are absolutely real. The news is fake because so much of the news is fake.

Fact check: Huh?

If the information coming from those leaks is real, then how can the stories be fake?

The reporting is fake. Look, look...You know what it is? Here’s the thing. The public isn’t — you know, they read newspapers, they see television, they watch. They don’t know if it’s true or false because they’re not involved. I’m involved. I’ve been involved with this stuff all my life. But I’m involved. So I know when you’re telling the truth or when you’re not. I just see many, many untruthful things.

Fact check: True. Trump almost certainly does see many, many untruthful things.

I mean, I watch CNN, it’s so much anger and hatred and just the hatred. I don’t watch it any more....Well, you look at your show that goes on at 10 o’clock in the evening. You just take a look at that show. That is a constant hit....Now, I will say this. I watch it. I see it. I’m amazed by it.

Fact check: Schrödinger's cat. Trump both watches and doesn't watch CNN.

We had Hillary Clinton try and do a reset. We had Hillary Clinton give Russia 20 percent of the uranium in our country. You know what uranium is, right? This thing called nuclear weapons like lots of things are done with uranium including some bad things.

Fact check: Half true. No, Hillary Clinton didn't give Russia any uranium. (She was one of many who approved a deal for the Russian atomic energy agency to buy a Canadian company that controls 20 percent of the US uranium reserves. But none of it can exported outside the US.) However, it is true that bad things can be done with uranium.

QUESTION: Let’s talk about some serious issues that have come up in the last week that you have had to deal with as president of the United States. You mentioned the vessel — the spy vessel off the coast of the United States.

TRUMP: Not good.

QUESTION: There was a ballistic missile test that many interpret as a violation of an agreement between the two countries; and a Russian plane buzzed a U.S. destroyer.

TRUMP: Not good.

....QUESTION: So when you say they’re not good, do you mean that they are...
TRUMP: Who did I say is not good?

QUESTION: No, I read off the three things that have recently happened. Each one of them you said they’re not good.

TRUMP: No, it’s not good, but they happened.

QUESTION: But do they damage the relationship? Do they undermine...

TRUMP: They all happened recently.

Fact check: True. These are all things that happened recently.

JAKE TURX, A REPORTER FOR A SMALL ULTRA-ORTHODOX JEWISH PUBLICATION: Despite what some of my colleagues may have been reporting, I haven’t seen anybody in my community accuse either yourself or anyone on your staff of being anti-Semitic. We understand that you have Jewish grandchildren. You are their zaidy. However, what we are concerned about, and what we haven’t really heard being addressed, is an uptick in anti-Semitism and how the government is planning to take care of it... There has been a report out that 48 bomb threats have been made against Jewish centers all across the country in the last couple of weeks. There are people who are committing anti-Semitic acts or threatening to...

TRUMP: he said he was gonna ask a very simple, easy question. And it’s not, its not, not — not a simple question, not a fair question. OK sit down, I understand the rest of your question.

So here’s the story, folks. Number one, I am the least anti- Semitic person that you’ve ever seen in your entire life. Number two, racism, the least racist person....See, he lied about — he was gonna get up and ask a very straight, simple question, so you know, welcome to the world of the media. But let me just tell you something, that I hate the charge, I find it repulsive.

I hate even the question because people that know me and you heard the prime minister, you heard Ben Netanyahu yesterday, did you hear him, Bibi? He said, I’ve known Donald Trump for a long time and then he said, forget it. So you should take that instead of having to get up and ask a very insulting question like that.

Fact check: Incoherent. Turx explicitly tried to assure Trump that nobody thought he was anti-Semitic, but Trump's skin is so thin that he immediately decided Turx was calling him a racist and an anti-Semite. I wonder why?

By the way,

the entire point of this press conference seemed to be directed at one thing: accusing the press of being horrible and dishonest.

This came up in nearly every Trump answer. This is a great strategy for shoring up his base, of course. As near as I can tell, conservatives all thought this dumpster fire of a press conference was a terrific performance.

Donald Trump and The Definition of Insanity

58,000 mental health professionals say Donald Trump is too unstable to be president. Here’s a deep dive into the diagnosis and what could happen because of it

Psychologists say that Trump’s condition is a combination of mental disorders that cause one to distort reality and make violent, impulsive decisions. These disorders form, according to the doctor who coined the term Malignant Narcissism in the 1960s, “the most severe pathology and the root of the most vicious destructiveness.” (Full criteria below.)

This is the first time in history that so many mental health professionals have collectively diagnosed a living individual. Their conclusion, based on the hundreds of hours of Trump’s on-camera dialogue and off-the-cuff public speaking, is alarming because it says that our current president is too mentally disturbed to fulfill his office.

White House dismisses 6 over failed background checks

Several White House staffers were dismissed Thursday morning after failing FBI background checks, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Some of the aides were "walked out of the building by security" on Wednesday after not passing the SF86, a Questionnaire for National Security Positions for security clearance.

Among those who won't be working at the White House was President Donald Trump’s director of scheduling, Caroline Wiles, the daughter of Susan Wiles, Trump’s Florida campaign director and former chief of staff to Governor Rick Scott.

Wiles, who resigned Friday before the background check was completed, was appointed deputy assistant secretary before the inauguration in January. Two sources close to Wiles said she will get another job in Treasury.

She's among others who failed to pass the intensive background check, which includes questions on the applicant's credit score, substance use and other personal subjects.

Trump family’s elaborate lifestyle is a ‘logistical nightmare’ — at taxpayer expense

Barely a month into the Trump presidency, the unusually elaborate lifestyle of America’s new first family is straining the Secret Service and security officials, stirring financial and logistical concerns in several local communities, and costing far beyond what has been typical for past presidents — a price tag that, based on past assessments of presidential travel and security costs, could balloon into the hundreds of millions of dollars over the course of a four-year term.

Trump’s three Mar-a-Lago trips since the inauguration have probably cost the federal treasury about $10 million, based on figures used in an October government report analyzing White House travel, including money for Coast Guard units to patrol the exposed shoreline and other military, security and staffing expenses associated with moving the apparatus of the presidency.

Palm Beach County officials plan to ask Washington to reimburse tens of thousands of dollars a day in expenses for deputies handling added security and traffic issues around the cramped Florida island whenever Trump is in town.

(Trash will stiff them like he did his casino contractors)

In New York, the city is paying $500,000 a day to guard Trump Tower, according to police officials’ estimates, an amount that could reach $183 million a year.

This month, The Post reported that Secret Service and U.S. Embassy staffers paid nearly $100,000 in hotel-room bills to support Eric Trump’s trip to promote a Trump-brand condo tower in Uruguay.

Trump Disapproval Reaches New Heights In Gallup Poll

Just four weeks into his term, 56 percent of Americans disapprove of the job Donald Trump is doing as President

Gallup averages survey results from the previous three days. Through Thursday, the most recent numbers available, 56 percent of respondents disapproved of Trump's performance, while just 38 percent approved.

That’s an 18 percent net drop since the poll started tracking the new President's numbers. Trump started, on Jan. 22, with his approval and disapproval numbers tied at 45 percent,

How could things get worse for Trump?

"President Trump is flailing like a man who fears he’s about to go under..." (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/2/16/1634643/--President-Trump-is-flailing-like-a-man-who-fears-he-s-about-to-go-under)

President Trump is flailing like a man who fears he’s about to go under, and he hasn’t even been in office a full month. His instinct is to flee to the warmth and comfort of his political base — but he will learn that while presidents can run, they can’t hide.

Trump’s administration faces two acute, interlocking crises:

serious questions about his campaign’s contacts with official and unofficial representatives of the Russian government (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/whitehouse/the-latest-trump-urges-venezuela-to-release-lopez/2017/02/15/fa23d4a6-f3df-11e6-9fb1-2d8f3fc9c0ed_story.html?utm_term=.39c8e6b43a2e), which U.S. intelligence agencies believe made concerted efforts to help Trump win the election;

and

appalling levels of dysfunction (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/whitehouse/a-crush-of-crises-all-but-buries-the-young-trump-white-house/2017/02/15/f2250934-f3d3-11e6-9fb1-2d8f3fc9c0ed_story.html?utm_term=.12b48c0f6ec3) in the White House that make self-inflicted wounds the rule rather than the exception.

It is unclear whether Trump is trying to fool the nation or fool himself.

Who is in charge?

Chief of Staff Reince Priebus has yet to establish any reasonable sense of order or any effective process for making decisions.

Chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon and senior adviser Stephen Miller constitute a competing power center and were responsible for the shoddily drafted travel and refugee ban that was blocked by the courts.

Counselor Kellyanne Conway goes on television and speaks confidently for the administration but increasingly is out of the loop — as when she said that Trump had “full confidence (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/trump-evaluating-the-situation-involving-flynn-russia/2017/02/13/2ac5a690-f249-11e6-9fb1-2d8f3fc9c0ed_story.html?utm_term=.1fbf71dd6736)” in Flynn just hours before his dismissal.

Press secretary Sean Spicer struggles daily to reconcile Trump’s pronouncements with objective reality.

No communications director has been hired. Who would take the job?

Among Trump’s inner circle, only senior adviser Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, seems to be having a relatively positive impact. Yes, this administration has reduced me to applauding nepotism.
Trump said Thursday that his administration was running like “a fine-tuned machine (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/president-trump-administration-running-fine-tuned-machine/story?id=45540067).” A crash-test simulator, perhaps? :lol

I guess things could be worse. Don’t ask me how.

“Morning Joe” reveals the secret panic of GOP lawmakers after Trump’s unhinged press conference

“That would have been a really funny hour or so of television if he weren’t president of the United States."

Horrified by the president’s narcissism and deceit, the “Morning Joe” hosts also revealed why Trump’s “fake news” battle has just begun.

“That would have been a really funny hour or so of television if he weren’t president of the United States,” Scarborough remarked. “It was one of the most chaotic, rambling press conferences anybody has ever seen.”

“everybody I talked to on (Capitol) Hill, including a lot of Republican senators and congressmen,

were scared to death by what they saw, and more than one said,

‘This just isn’t going to last long because he just doesn’t have control of reality,’”

Scarborough pointed out

MSNBC contributor Mike Barnicle added that

“The No. 1 story is the stability of the president of the United States.”

“The first 35 minutes of that press conference was watching

a president of the United States who has lost a grip on reality,”

Barnicle recalled. “It was as if he performed for himself because he needed to perform like that because he needed to convince himself he was president.”

Brzezinski noted Trump

“throws out shiny objects and lies to distract us,”

warning other journalists not to fall for Trump’s tricks.

Trash has the syndrome for untreated "neuro-syphilis" :lol

Trump’s ‘bizarre, volatile behavior’ could be from untreated syphilis: infectious disease doctor

On Friday, The New Republic published an essay (https://newrepublic.com/article/140702/medical-theory-donald-trumps-bizarre-behavior) by infectious disease specialist Steven Beutler who believes that Pres. Trump may well be suffering from dementia but that the cause could be clinical rather than psychological.

“Given our experience, we can’t help but wonder if there’s a medical diagnosis to be made.

After all, many medical conditions exhibit their first symptoms in the form of psychiatric issues and personality changes. One condition in particular is notable for doing so: Neurosyphilis.”

“the infection enters a prolonged latent phase, which can last decades. During this time, it is asymptomatic and it is not contagious. In some cases, this is followed by a tertiary stage, which is the most serious and may involve any organ in the body. It is seen 10 to 30 years after the initial infection, and is best known for

causing neurologic and neuropsychiatric disease: Neurosyphilis.”
Neurosyphilis symptoms can manifest in an array of ways depending upon the patient.

“Commonly recognized symptoms include

irritability, :lol

loss of ability to concentrate, :lol

delusional thinking, and :lol

grandiosity,” :lol

said Beutler.

“Memory, insight, and judgment can become impaired. :lol

Insomnia may occur.

Visual problems may develop, including the inability of pupils to react to the light.

This, along other ocular pathology, can result in photophobia, dimming of vision, and squinting.

All of these things have been observed in Trump.

Dementia, headaches, gait disturbances. and patchy hair loss can also be seen in later stages of syphilis.”

We know Trump was potentially exposed to syphilis based on

his own statements that he was sexually promiscuous in the 1980s, a period when syphilis cases were rapidly increasing in the U.S.,”

Two simple blood tests would clear up the question, Beutler said.

If they’re both negative, Trump doesn’t have neurosyphilis.

If one is negative and one is positive, then further tests including a spinal tap are in order.

“Without treatment, however, the disease is progressive: It can make for a rather ugly end to one’s life. Whether Trump emerged unscathed from his ‘personal Vietnam’ is now a question that he should explore with his personal physician.”

Duck and cover

More than 200 Republicans in Congress are skipping February town halls with constituents

this year most Republicans are foregoing a hallowed recess tradition: holding in-person town halls where lawmakers take questions from constituents in a high school gym, local restaurant, or college classroom.

After outpourings of rage at some early town halls — including crowds at an event near Salt Lake City yelling “Do your job!” at Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight Committee — many Republicans are ducking in-person events altogether.

Instead they’re opting for more controlled Facebook Live or “tele-town halls,” where questions can be screened by press secretaries and followups are limited — as are the chances of becoming the next viral meme of the Left.

For the first two months of the new Congress, the 292 Republicans have scheduled just 88 in-person town hall events — and 35 of those sessions are for Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin,

In the first two months of the previous Congress in 2015, by contrast, Republicans held 222 in-person town hall events.

Republicans who get roughed up at their town halls have taken to dismissing the attendees as professional organizers.

“Record everything!”

“Unfavorable exchanges caught on video can be devastating for [members of Congress],” they write.

“These clips can be shared through social media and picked up by local and national media.”

Tea party protesters did this in opposition to Obamacare during the 2009 summer recess.

Kushner met with top executives at Time Warner—the parent company of President Trump’s least-favorite media organization CNN—to express his concern about “unfair coverage slanted against the president.”

Kushner specifically was complaining about two CNN pundits, conservative Ana Navarro and liberal Van Jones.

Popular Domestic Programs Face Ax Under First Trump Budget

The White House budget office has drafted a hit list of programs that President Trump could eliminate to trim domestic spending, including longstanding conservative targets like the

Corporation for Public Broadcasting,

the Legal Services Corporation,

AmeriCorps and the

National Endowments for the Arts and

the Humanities.

Most of the programs cost under $500 million annually, a pittance for a government that is projected (https://www.cbo.gov/topics/budget) to spend about $4 trillion this year. And a few are surprising, even though most if not all have been perennial targets for conservatives.

Mr. Trump has spoken volubly about the nation’s drug problems, yet the list includes the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy, which dispenses grants to reduce drug use and drug trafficking.

And despite Mr. Trump’s vocal promotion of American exports, the list includes the Export-Import Bank, which has guaranteed loans to foreign customers of American companies since the 1930s.

their coming budget proposal as examples of misuse of taxpayer dollars. :lol

John McCain just systematically dismantled Donald Trump's entire worldview

John McCain is increasingly mad as hell about President Donald Trump.

And on Friday, he went after Trump - hard.

During a speech at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, the Republican senator from Arizona delivered a pointed and striking point-by-point takedown of Trump's worldview and brand of nationalism. McCain didn't mention Trump's name once, but he didn't have to.

And even considering the two men's up-and-down history and the terrible things Trump has said about McCain, it was a striking display from a senior leader of a party when it comes to a president of the same party.

In his speech, McCain suggested the Western world is uniquely imperiled this year - even more so than when Barack Obama was president - and proceeded to question whether the Western world will survive.

"In recent years, this question would invite accusations of hyperbole and alarmism. Not this year," McCain said. "If ever there were a time to treat this question with a deadly seriousness, it is now."

n case there was any doubt that this was about Trump. Here's what followed:

--"[The founders of the Munich conference] would be alarmed by an increasing turn away from universal values and toward old ties of blood and race and sectarianism."

--"They would be alarmed by the hardening resentment we see toward immigrants and refugees and minority groups, especially Muslims."

--"They would be alarmed by the growing inability, and even unwillingness, to separate truth from lies."
That's Trump, Trump and Trump.

McCain continued: "But what would alarm them most, I think, is a sense that many of our peoples, including in my own country, are giving up on the West, that they see it as a bad deal that we may be better off without, and that while Western nations still have the power to maintain our world order, it is unclear whether we have the will."

Citizen Trump likely wouldn’t get a security clearance

If Donald Trump were an off-the-street federal job applicant, he most likely would not be granted a security clearance. Measured against the standards applied to thousands of Americans involved with our national security, knowledge essential to granting Trump access to classified information simply isn’t there.

Security clearances are granted after determining that an individual’s personal and professional histories make it safe to do so. The criteria for such a judgment include, quoting State Department policy (https://www.state.gov/m/ds/clearances/c10978.htm), the person’s

“loyalty to the United States, strength of character, trustworthiness, honesty, reliability, discretion, and sound judgment, as well as freedom from conflicting allegiances and potential for coercion, and a willingness and ability to abide by regulations governing the use, handling, and protection of classified information.”

The most critical step in deciding whether to grant someone access to classified information is a background investigation consisting of a thorough examination of the individual’s past and current histories.

This is where deciding whether Trump is an acceptable security risk hits a wall.

There is so much about him and his conduct, past and present, that is unknown.

And, as the Wall Street Journal reported this week, questions about Trump may be causing U.S. intelligence officials to withhold sensitive intelligence (https://www.wsj.com/articles/spies-keep-intelligence-from-donald-trump-1487209351) from him.

The intelligence community’s concerns, reportedly, center on the Trump team’s contacts with the Russian government (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/02/15/4-times-donald-trumps-team-denied-contact-with-russia/?utm_term=.96e67eac6a05). There are also Trump’s repeated expressions of admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump’s call during the presidential primary for Russia to hack Hillary Clinton’s emails, and FBI and CIA knowledge that the Russians leaked Clinton campaign emails to undermine her candidacy and boost Trump’s.

Then there are those aspects of Trump’s life that would raise security concerns were they found in background checks of others seeking clearances.

Applicants’ associations with foreign interests — especially substantial business, financial or property interests in a foreign country or with foreign-owned businesses — would not escape U.S. scrutiny, especially if those associations might subject the applicant to a risk of foreign influence or exploitation.
Trump has eluded such an examination.

Little is known about the nature of Trump’s foreign business relationships — what they are, his conduct while traveling outside the United States, or his interactions with foreign governments known to target U.S. citizens to try to obtain protected information.

A background investigation that

uncovers questionable judgment,

lack of candor or dishonesty draws heightened attention. So, too, the

refusal to provide full, frank and truthful answers to lawful questions.

That kind of activity may constitute grounds for unfavorable clearance action.

Trump has never been subjected to such an inquiry.

He has a proven record of not providing truthful or candid answers. True, it didn’t disqualify him from the presidency. It would, ironically, darken his chances of getting a U.S. government security clearance.
A security clearance applicant

who has engaged in deceptive financial practices,

who has a history of failing to meet financial obligations, and

who fails to identify and explain all sources of income is a red flag.

Such a record, of course, is no bar to the presidency.

A background investigation that turns up evidence of possible emotional, mental or personality disorders, even without a formal diagnosis, elevates security concerns , although not to the point of disqualification without an evaluation by a duly qualified mental-health professional.

But bizarre behavior suggesting emotional instability, and which casts doubt on the individual’s judgment or reliability, will certainly get a closer professional look before a security clearance is granted. Trump has no such worries.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/citizen-trump-likely-wouldnt-get-a-security-clearance-heres-why/2017/02/17/b2a7258e-f492-11e6-b9c9-e83fce42fb61_story.html?tid=hybrid_experimentrando m_1_na&utm_term=.d3bd69a41e95

List of Mar-a-Lago members reveals 500 wealthy individuals who can dictate policy directly to Trump

The New York Times reported on Saturday (https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/02/18/us/mar-a-lago-trump-ethics-winter-white-house.html) that the 500 people paying $200,000 per year to belong to Trump’s exclusive club include “dozens of real estate developers, Wall Street financiers, energy executives and others whose businesses could be affected by Mr. Trump’s policies.”

“At least three club members are under consideration for an ambassadorship,” wrote the Times‘ Nicholas Confessore, Maggie Haberman and Eric Lipton. “Most of the 500 have had memberships predating Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign, and there are a limited number of memberships still available.”

Among current members are

fossil fuel billionaire William H. Koch,

trader Thomas Peterffy,

insurance executive George Norcross and

Rockstar Energy Drink CFO and co-founder Janet Weiner, whose company is attempting to loosen regulations on its products.

Real estate developer and co-founder of Toll Brothers — one of the largest home-building companies in the U.S. — told the Times that the

influence of members on Pres. Trump is benign :lol

and is just part of casual discussions with the former reality TV star.

Another member is former Reagan White House chief of staff Kenneth Duberstein, who “now works as a corporate consultant and lobbyist. Clients of Mr. Duberstein’s firm (https://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/lobbyist.php?id=Duberstein%2C%20Kenneth%20M&id=Y0000024410L&year=2016) include

Amgen and Pfizer, the pharmaceutical giants; and

America’s Health Insurance Plans, which represents the nation’s largest health insurers.”

When the Times asked Duberstein about his Mar-a-Lago membership, he brushed aside ethical concerns by saying,

“It’s a social thing. It is not a business thing.” :lol

However, member Richard LeFrak — a New York real estate developer — said that

he was startled when Trump told him the Department of Homeland security was quoting a $10 billion price tag for the border wall with Mexico, then offered to cut him in. :lol

“He said, would I consider doing it? And then he suggested that the price that was being quoted in the media seemed absurdly high to him,” Mr. LeFrak said. “And I didn’t react to him one way or the other because I don’t know what the facts are.”

Le Frak said he said to Trump, “I thought you were going to have homeland security deal with this.”

Trump, who LeFrak described as stymied by the bureaucracy, reportedly said, “Yes, maybe General Kelly will call you.”

Trump just fired a National Security Council aide for criticizing him

The White House fired a senior National Security Council aide yesterday (http://www.politico.com/story/2017/02/white-house-nsc-aide-craig-deare-dismissed-235175) after reports that he had harshly criticized President Trump and his team at a private event in front of about two dozen scholars.

Aide: Senators Want Materials Saved For Probe Into Russian Election Interference

The Senate Intelligence Committee has sent formal requests to more than a dozen organizations, agencies and individuals, asking them to preserve all materials related to the committee's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and related issues, according to a congressional aide.

The committee chairman, Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and its vice chairman, Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., sent letters Friday, the same day committee members received a classified briefing from FBI Director James Comey.

Committee members declined to comment on what was discussed after the more than hourlong briefing.

Learning Eye-Popping Details About Mr Sater

As I noted in my previous post (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/a-big-shoe-just-dropped), I've been keenly interested in Donald Trump's association with Felix Sater going back to last Spring.

I also knew he had been an FBI informant and leveraged that status to dramatically reduce his sentence in a major financial crime.

I didn't realize until this evening that there were more details about this part of the story in the public domain than I'd realized.

It's rather mind-blowing.

Trash will state visit UK, but UK Parliament won't accept this orange piece of criminal shit.

British MPs Clash Over Trump State Visit (http://www.ozy.com/presidential-daily-brief/pdb-75869/heating-up-75881)

No one was mincing words.

A packed Westminster Hall saw Britain’s Parliament quarrel (http://www.ozy.com/flashback/british-politicians-addiction-to-dueling/73844) over whether President Trump’s planned state visit to the U.K. should be canceled.

Over the three-hour debate — prompted by an online petition with nearly 2 million signatures — Trump was branded a “bully and a bigot” and “immoral” by MPs from both sides of the aisle.

Government sources say there’s no way the visit will be canceled, but Britain’s Speaker of the House has made it clear that Trump won’t be allowed to address Parliament.

‘He was in business with the cartoon caricature of corruption’: Maddow breaks down Trump-Azerbaijan report

“there is a reason we should expect this White House to do everything in his power to keep secret his finances and his business dealings.”

when WikiLeaks was instead just wholesale dumping U.S. State Department cables into the public domain, one of the things we learned was actually about a funny thing that happened to this giant company, Bechtel,”

Adam Davidson’s New Yorker piece published Monday that explained the relationship between Trump, Azerbaijan, and oligarchs tied to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (an Iranian military organization that low-key provides financial support to terrorist organizations).

the company that landed Azerbaijan’s road contract “is a company that is believed to be controlled by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard”—an Iranian military organization that preserves “internal order” in the country and “wages war on behalf of Iranian interests.” As Maddow pointed out, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard is a “supporter of international terrorist movements” and “deeply sanctioned by the U.S. government.”

it’s often “awkward, hard” and “illegal” for companies that sponsor terrorists “to move money around,” adding it’s important that monetary transactions “appear to be legitimate business transactions.”

Maddow then turned to the never-opened Trump International Hotel & Tower Baku, a planned building in Azerbaijan that “on the surface makes no financial sense.” The hotel was planned miles away from any other major luxury hotel, with no access to the Caspian Sea.

“It really just doesn’t make sense on the surface,” Maddow repeated, later asking “why was this built, how could this ever make financial sense?”

Trump family “abandoned this project” a month after Trump’s election, but “not before [Trump] received millions of dollars in that deal”—a deal forged between Trump and billionaire transport minister Mammadov (the same Mammadov that helped the Iranian Revolutionary Guard launder money to terrorist organizations).

Maddow said while U.S. companies are free to do business with any company in the world, they are not free to conduct business if funds originate from companies tied to terrorism. “You have to know,” Maddow explained. “Looking the other way is not a defense.”

“You are expected to do your due diligence,” she added.

“Trump and his family were in business with the cartoon caricature of corruption,” Maddow said of the president’s ties to Azerbaijan’s Mammadov. The host pointed out, “It is a violation of U.S. law” to do business with a company that helps fund terrorism.

The segment aired sometime before 6:30 a.m. Trump tweeted at a little after 7.

But notice what the segment doesn’t say: That those detainees were all released by Obama. Because they weren’t.

But the critical detail — added by Trump on the fly — is that the vast majority of those who’ve reengaged were released under George W. Bush.

As you see, 122 of those released have reengaged — 113 of them released under the Bush administration.

Another 86 are suspected to have reengaged — 75 under Bush.

And one of the nine for whom Obama should be culpable? Killed in Yemen. Another one was already killed, according to the DNI report, along with 29 of those released by Bush.

Busted: Trump met and ‘warmly greeted’ Russian ambassador during 2016 campaign

Despite repeatedly denying that he met with the Russians during his 2016 campaign, it has been revealed that Donald Trump spoke with and “warmly greeted” Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak prior to giving a foreign policy speech on April 27, 2016.

“A few minutes before he made those remarks, Mr. Trump met at a VIP reception with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Ivanovich Kislyak. Mr. Trump warmly greeted Mr. Kislyak and three other foreign ambassadors who came to the reception,” the Journal reported.

The Journal reported that Trump used the speech to praise Russia, saying he looked forward to working with President Vladimir Putin.

British betting behemoth, Ladbrokes is speculating (https://sports.ladbrokes.com/en-gb/betting/politics/american/specials/donald-trump-specials/222881036/) that Trump may not even finish out the year in office, offering 2 to 1 odds that Trump is replaced before the end of this year.

To put it in perspective, those are the same odds that he’ll be replaced in 2021 (meaning Jan. 20, 2021).

There’s even money that he’ll serve his full term — meaning noPresident Mike Pence (http://www.salon.com/2017/03/05/president-pences-problems-indiana-democrats-say-vp-was-the-worst-governor-we-ever-had/)— and 4 to 5 odds that he’ll leave office before the end of his term.

Trump's next scandal is already starting to simmer. (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/3/30/1648494/-Trump-s-next-scandal-is-already-starting-to-simmer)

Back in February the petulant man child told reporters that he “had no dealings in Russia.

Trump and his companies have been associated with at least 10 wealthy Russians that have alleged ties to criminal activities and money laundering, they include;

• A member of the firm that developed the Trump SoHo Hotel in New York is a twice-convicted felon who spent a year in prison for stabbing a man and later scouted for Trump investments in Russia.
• An investor in the SoHo project was accused by Belgian authorities in 2011 in a $55 million money-laundering scheme.
• Three owners of Trump condos in Florida and Manhattan were accused in federal indictments of belonging to a Russian-American organized crime group and working for a major international crime boss based in Russia.
• A former mayor from Kazakhstan was accused in a federal lawsuit filed in Los Angeles in 2014 of hiding millions of dollars looted from his city, some of which was spent on three Trump SoHo units.
• A Ukrainian owner of two Trump condos in Florida was indicted in a money-laundering scheme involving a former prime minister of Ukraine.

Notice the heavy interest in the Trump Soho property?

Now, there is certainly no crime in a real estate developer having investors and in selling units in his property, that’s how they make a living.

But the catch here is the investors and buyers themselves.

Buying foreign real estate is a well known practice for money laundering and protecting illegal or ill gotten gains from seizure back home.

Trump has never even been accused of any wrongdoing in these deals, much less charged.

But the subject of money laundering is an uncomfortable one for Das Donald, since he’s already admitted to it and paid a fine in the past for it. To quote the report:

Money laundering was an issue for Trump's Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City, which was fined $10 million in 2015 for failing to report suspicious transactions.

Federal rules are designed to protect the U.S. financial system from being used as a safe haven for dirty money and transnational crimes, Jennifer Shasky Calvery, then-director of the U.S. Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCen), said at the time.

It was the largest penalty the agency ever levied against a casino since reporting requirements began in 2003, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Hmmmm. This is by no means any kind of indictment, but it is an interesting starting point for an investigation.

States that expanded aca Medicaid expansion will soon run into trouble with their portion - either raise taxes or divert funds from education, transportation, prisons, etc especially because of underestimation of enrollment and cost (see below).

Maybe you shouldn't place so much trust in what CBO says:

Enrollment is much higher than CBO expected when the ACA passed in 2010, and it is also significantly higher, particularly in 2017 and beyond, than estimated in both CBO’s 2014 and 2015 reports. Essentially, this means that far more people—roughly 50% more—have enrolled and are projected to enroll in Medicaid in the states that expanded than was expected by CBO previously.

In addition to higher-than-expected enrollment, spending per newly eligible Medicaid enrollee is much greater than expected. As I wrote in July when the Obama administration released the 2015 Medicaid actuarial report, government spending on newly eligible enrollees equaled about $6,366 in 2015—an amount 49% higher than its projection of $4,281 from just one year earlier.

Both higher-than-expected enrollment and spending per enrollee has resulted in the Medicaid expansion being much more costly than projected. For example, in April 2014, CBO projected that the Medicaid expansion would cost $42 billion in 2015. The actual cost was $68 billion, about 62% higher.

The second figure shows CBO’s projections of federal spending on the Medicaid expansion and how CBO’s most recent projection of the cost are substantially above previous expectations.

Using CBO’s current projections of state adoption of the expansion for its previous estimates shows that federal Medicaid spending between 2016 and 2024 is $232 billion in excess of its April 2014 estimates.

Both figures adjust CBO’s previous year estimates for its current assumptions about state adoption of the expansion. CBO now expects states to adopt the expansion at a slower rate than it has previously projected. In 2010, before the Supreme Court made Medicaid expansion optional for states, CBO expected all states would adopt the expansion. This adjustment allows for a better comparison of enrollment and spending because it holds constant CBO’s assumptions about the percentage of the newly eligible Medicaid population residing in expansionary states.

Too Little Value from Medicaid Expansion

Prior to the ACA, when states shouldered their traditional share of Medicaid spending (an average of 43%), only Vermont and the District of Columbia concluded that the tradeoffs—higher state taxes and reduced spending elsewhere—justified expanding Medicaid to the ACA expansion population. It turns out that states that did not expand Medicaid prior to the ACA almost certainly made a wise cost-benefit calculation.

A 2015 study from economists at Harvard, MIT, and Dartmouth, assessing an earlier Medicaid expansion in Oregon to a similar population to the ACA expansion, found that “[a]cross a variety of alternative specifications … Medicaid’s value to recipients is lower than the government’s costs of the program, and usually substantially below.” They estimated that the “welfare benefit to recipients from Medicaid per dollar of government spending range from about $0.2 to $0.4.” Oregon Medicaid expansion enrollees did not have significant improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar relative to people who did not enroll in Medicaid.

Reform Medicaid, Stop Viewing Program as Economic Stimulus

In order to increase the value that enrollees receive from Medicaid and lessen the amount lost to waste, fraud, and abuse, it is necessary to change the central incentives underlying the federal-state partnership. In particular, the incentives of the ACA’s elevated reimbursement rate lead policymakers to view Medicaid as an engine for economic stimulus instead of as a welfare program. For example, according to the White House:

“By expanding Medicaid, States can pull billions in additional Federal funding into their economies every year, with no State contribution over the next three years and only a modest one thereafter for coverage of newly eligible people.”

A study by Deloitte Consulting and the University of Louisville projects that the ACA’s Medicaid expansion will add 40,000 jobs and $30 billion to Kentucky’s economy through 2021. The problem with this and similar studies is that they assess the decision of a state in isolation without factoring in other states’ decisions regarding expansion. For example, Kentucky is worse off when other states expand, because her citizens pay federal taxes to finance health benefits that accrue only to individuals in those other states.

Economist Robert Book points out that the American economy is worse from the ACA expansion “because taxation itself has a negative effect on economic activity, over and above the amount of tax collected.” Book estimates a reduction of $174 billion in economic activity over a 10-year period if all states expand Medicaid. He also estimated a total job loss of more than 200,000 positions from 2014 to 2017 if all states expanded Medicaid.

Sensible Medicaid reform has two central goals: reduce the unsustainable trajectory of spending and produce better outcomes for people most in need. The ACA Medicaid expansion significantly adds to the unsustainable spending trajectory of the program, likely fails to produce health outcomes or value to recipients worth the corresponding cost, and creates a large federal government bias toward nondisabled, working-age adults at the expense of traditional Medicaid enrollees. Moving Medicaid back in the right direction requires ending the ACA’s elevated federal reimbursement rate that has given rise to these problems.

‘That’s what happens with an unpopular president’: GOP allies flee Trump as his poll numbers take a nosedive

President Donald Trump is becoming more isolated as fellow Republicans distance themselves from the chief executive after a string of policy failures.

According to the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-remains-the-center-of-attention-but-hes-increasingly-isolated-politically/2017/04/02/126041e6-1648-11e7-833c-503e1f6394c9_story.html?utm_term=.76c5287bf402), Trump’s unorthodox governing style along with his unfamiliarity about how bills get passed has lawmakers from his own party moving away from him, with a former White House official stating, “That’s what happens when you have an unpopular president.”

Following the failure of Trumpcare to even reach the floor of the House for a vote due to pushback from the hardline Republican Freedom Caucus, the president has launched attacks on the members — including having his social media director call for one member to be defeated at the polls (https://www.rawstory.com/2017/04/gop-lawmaker-battles-white-house-after-trump-social-media-director-calls-for-his-defeat-at-the-polls/).

“He seems both politically and personally isolated these days,” explained former White House adviser David Gergen. “He’s flailing because he doesn’t know where to find his natural allies.”

“Part of it is self-imposed,” agreed former RNC Chairman Michael Steele told the Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-remains-the-center-of-attention-but-hes-increasingly-isolated-politically/2017/04/02/126041e6-1648-11e7-833c-503e1f6394c9_story.html?utm_term=.76c5287bf402). “People know him, they see him at meetings, but it’s been hard for people in Congress and around it to get to know him in a way that’s helpful for Trump.”

... nothing a Kock Bros stink tank, no credibility.

FACT CHECK: Trump Says Obamacare Is 'Exploding.' It's Not

What's working

1) The exchanges are stable ...

2) ... In part because many people are shielded from premium hikes.

Indeed, premiums have climbed substantially in some states' exchanges, but PolitiFact found this week (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2017/mar/23/barack-obama/obama-no-premium-hike-vast-majority-covered-govern/) that "most people purchasing health care through the marketplace didn't feel it."

3) The uninsured rate has fallen — a lot.
Probably the biggest positive supporters of the Affordable Care Act point to is the fast-falling rate of people who don't have health insurance.

4) Premiums are holding steady (but don't praise Obamacare for that)

One more point that's not exactly great, but is an improvement:

Premiums continue to grow for enrollees in employer-provided plans, but that growth is slower (http://www.npr.org/2017/01/19/510491692/the-america-donald-trump-is-inheriting-by-the-numbers) than it was in the years prior to the Affordable Care Act's passage.

http://www.npr.org/2017/03/27/521441490/fact-check-trump-says-obamacare-is-exploding-its-not?utm_source=npr_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=20170402&utm_campaign=bestofnpr&utm_term=nprnews

there are negatives, but they are ALL due to the insurance companies FLEECING ALL Americans by raising insurance prices to transfer wealth to investors. ACA is not involved in raising prices.

====================

No, Obamacare Isn’t in a ‘Death Spiral’

If you listen to many Republicans in Washington, the Affordable Care Act’s insurance markets are in a “death spiral (http://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2017/02/27/paul-ryan-mitch-mcconnell-obamacare-plan-nr.cnn),” “imploding (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/841275470796738560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw),” “collapsing (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/28/us/politics/trump-congress-video-transcript.html?_r=0)” or “will fall of their own weight (https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/816652088662958082?lang=en).”

But the new estimates (https://www.cbo.gov/sites/default/files/115th-congress-2017-2018/costestimate/americanhealthcareact_0.pdf) from the Congressional Budget Office contradict this long-held talking point. According to the budget office, the Obamacare markets will remain stable over the long run, if there are no significant changes.

Growing evidence suggests that the markets are far from collapse.

Because of how the subsidies work, people were generally shielded from this year’s higher prices, and enrollment is steady.

Several recent analyses argue that this year’s increase was a market correction, and that a smoother market would follow in the years ahead.

Right-wing preacher justifies Trump’s Access Hollywood tape as God’s work

Right-wing preacher Lance Wallnau shows us that evangelicals can twist and reshape the interpretation of their faith into convenient excuses for their questionable behavior and hypocrisy.

Wallnau had actually released his pro-Trump book five days before the Access Hollywood tape was leaked, and soon found himself in a pickle.

While speaking to Pat Robertson’s 700 Club staff, Wallnau explained,

“Five days out and the Access Hollywood recording comes to me. And I thought, ‘this is so embarrassing, because I am now going to totally look like a false prophet.’” (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/lance-wallnau-release-of-access-hollywood-tape-was-gods-way-of-humbling-trump-in-preparation-for-the-presidency/)

But his initial negative feelings toward Trump’s misogyny was immediately explained away with ridiculous religion-based excuses.

“God allowed it because God is actually letting this man experience humbling,” Wallnau continued. “Because he really didn’t have anything to think of repenting for before. Now he’s got something. It's Official: Top Psychiatrists at Yale Conference Warn That Trump Has a 'Dangerous Mental Illness'

Trump's mental health could have a dangerous impact on the American people.

35 psychiatrists this week gathered at a conference at Yale to sound the alarm on what they believe is President Donald Trump’s “dangerous mental illness.”

Donald Trump’s mental health, which they warned was frighteningly unstable.

“We have an ethical responsibility to warn the public about Donald Trump’s dangerous mental illness,”

psychiatrists at the conference argued that Trump suffers from a particularly malignant case of pathological narcissism, which makes him a danger to the country and the world.

“Worse than just being a liar or a narcissist, in addition he is paranoid, delusional and grandiose thinking and he proved that to the country the first day he was president,” Gartner explained.

“If Donald Trump really believes he had the largest crowd size in history, that’s delusional.”

Trump’s erratic behavior has similarly disturbed him — despite the fact that he has lots of experience working with violent convicted criminals.

“I’ve worked with murderers and rapists, I can recognize dangerousness from a mile away,” he said. “You don’t have to be an expert on dangerousness or spend fifty years studying it like I have in order to know how dangerous this man is.”

“As some prominent psychiatrists have noted, [Trump’s mental health] is the elephant in the room,” Lee explained.

“I think the public is really starting to catch on and widely talk about this now.”

Trash: They Were Supposed to Love Me

Over recent months, I’ve several times noted that President Trump thought that once he won the election, everybody would love him. I base this on various comments he’s made and just my general sense of his personality. But nowhere to date has he said it more clearly, more openly.

It comes in this AP interview (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/trump-interview-full-transcript) and it turns on his press coverage (emphasis added) …

TRUMP: You have to love people. And if you love people, such a big responsibility. (unintelligible) You can take any single thing, including even taxes. I mean we’re going to be doing major tax reform. Here’s part of your story, it’s going to be a big (unintelligible). Everybody’s saying, “Oh, he’s delaying.” I’m not delaying anything. I’ll tell you the other thing is (unintelligible).

I used to get great press. I get the worst press. I get such dishonest reporting with the media. That’s another thing that really has — I’ve never had anything like it before. It happened during the primaries, and I said, you know, when I won, I said, “Well the one thing good is now I’ll get good press.”

And it got worse. (unintelligible) So that was one thing that a little bit of a surprise to me.

I thought the press would become better, and it actually, in my opinion, got more nasty.

What strikes me more is not so much the entitlement, that he thinks it should happen, but the fact that

he really thought it would happen.

Has Trump ‘given more financial disclosure than anybody else?'

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin says President Donald Trump "has no intention" of releasing his tax returns to the public, arguing that Americans have more than enough information about the president's financial matters.

the financial disclosure form is not a substitute for tax returns. And given the fact Mnuchin remark was made after a question about tax returns, it’s possible that his comment would be interpreted more broadly to include all the types of financial disclosure, not just the form.

When Trump argued that his financial disclosures were "the most extensive financial review of anybody in the history of politics," we rated that claim False (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/sep/07/donald-trump/donald-trump-says-his-financial-disclosures-more-m/).

The two most obvious pieces of the puzzle missing without Trump’s tax returns are the effective rate of tax he pays on his income, and the extent and nature of his charitable giving.

Blind George Will finds a nut

Trump has a dangerous disability

It is urgent for Americans to think and speak clearly about President Trump’s inability to do either.

This seems to be not a mere disinclination but a disability.

It is not merely the result of intellectual sloth but of an untrained mind bereft of information and married to stratospheric self-confidence.

What is most alarming (and mortifying to the University of Pennsylvania, from which he graduated) is not that Trump has entered his eighth decade unscathed by even elementary knowledge about the nation’s history.

As this column has said before, the problem isn’t that he does not know this or that, or that he does not know that he does not know this or that.

Rather, the dangerous thing is that he does not know what it is to know something.

So, it is up to the public to quarantine this presidency by insistently communicating to its elected representatives a

steady, rational fear of this man whose combination of impulsivity and credulity render him uniquely unfit to take the nation into a military conflict.

Impeachment may be a real possibility for Donald Trump

As Democrats start to mull removing Trump for office, a poll finds that voters have Dems' backs

Nearly half of all Americans want to see President Donald Trump get impeached.

A new survey released by Public Policy Polling (http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/333589-poll-42-percent-of-voters-support-impeaching-trump) found that

48 percent of Americans would support impeaching Trump (http://www.salon.com/2017/05/12/democrats-are-now-openly-talking-about-impeaching-donald-trump/),

compared to only 41 percent who would oppose doing so.

I wrote ‘The Art of the Deal’ with Trump. His self-sabotage is rooted in his past.

Why does Donald Trump behave in the dangerous and seemingly self-destructive ways he does?

Early on, I recognized that Trump’s sense of self-worth is forever at risk. When he feels aggrieved, he reacts impulsively and defensively, constructing a self-justifying story that doesn’t depend on facts and always directs the blame to others.

Trump felt compelled to go to war with the world. It was a binary, zero-sum choice for him: You either dominated or you submitted. You either created and exploited fear or you succumbed to it — as he thought his older brother had. This narrow, defensive worldview took hold at a very early age, and it never evolved. “When I look at myself today and I look at myself in the first grade,” he told a recent biographer (http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/04/opinions/president-trump-six-year-old-with-nuclear-weapons-dantonio/), “I’m basically the same.” His development essentially ended in early childhood.

he made it clear to me that he treated every encounter as a contest he had to win, because the only other option from his perspective was to lose, and that was the equivalent of obliteration. Many of the deals in “The Art of the Deal” were massive failures — among them the casinos he owned and the launch of a league to rival the National Football League — but Trump had me describe each of them as huge successes.

‘He is our disgrace’: Internet disgusted after Trump whines about media treatment in Coast Guard speech

Prresident Donald Trump on Wednesday used an address to the United States Coast Guard Academy (http://www.rawstory.com/2017/05/trump-whines-about-unfair-media-treatment-while-addressing-coast-guard-grads-headed-to-active-duty/) to once again vent his frustrations with negative media coverage.“

No politician in history has been treated worse or more unfairly,” Trump said of himself during his address, which ended with him imploring Coast Guard cadets to “enjoy your life — good luck.”

Reaction on the internet to Trump’s complaints about unfair treatment was swift and brutal,

as both liberals and conservatives slammed Trump for bringing his own personal grievances to a speech that was supposed to be about the Coast Guard.

Conversations with some officials who have briefed Trump and others who are aware of how he absorbs information portray a president with a short attention span.

He likes single-page memos and visual aids like maps, charts, graphs and photos.

National Security Council officials have strategically included Trump's name in "as many paragraphs as we can because he keeps reading if he's mentioned," according to one source, who relayed conversations he had with NSC officials.

Scary: Trump aides 'fear' leaving him alone in meetings, he's too daft to understand intelligence (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/5/16/1662948/-Scary-Trump-aides-fear-leaving-him-alone-in-meetings-he-s-too-daft-to-understand-intelligence)

The more this White House leaks, the scarier it gets. The New York Times is now reporting (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/16/us/white-house-staff.html?_r=1) some absolutely frightening tidbits from inside Trumpworld that should frighten all of us.

Trump's aides won’t leave him alone with foreign leaders because they’re afraid of what he might say or divulge.

There is a fear among some of Mr. Trump’s senior advisers about leaving him alone in meetings with foreign leaders out of concern he might speak out of turn.

General McMaster, in particular, has tried to insert caveats or gentle corrections into conversations when he believes the president is straying off topic or onto boggy diplomatic ground.

Naturally, Trump doesn’t like being corrected or diverted (even if he’s about to cause an international incident) and

has called McMaster “a pain.”

Also, Trump isn't sophisticated enough to pick up "granular details" about intelligence.

In private, three administration officials conceded that they could not publicly articulate their most compelling — and honest — defense of the president:

that Mr. Trump, a hasty and indifferent reader of printed briefing materials,

simply did not possess the interest or knowledge of the granular details of intelligence gathering to leak specific sources and methods of intelligence gathering that would do harm to United States allies.

Sorry, but how does “he’s too daft to do it intentionally” work as a defense?

Conservative David Brooks writes best 'infantalist' Trump take down to date (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/5/16/1662868/-Conservative-David-Brooks-writes-best-infantalist-Trump-take-down-to-date)

I had to explore New York Times Columnist David Brooks new op-ed that got to the core or rather the lack thereof in his op-ed this morning about Donald Trump. His words were not mean spirited and in so doing was that more palatable to most, even as piercingly honest and destructive as it is. We need objective Trump narratives of this type spread widely.

David Brooks has a way with words even when I disagree with him for ideological reasons. He has an ideology, but he is not ideological as evidenced his Trump take down.

Brooks starts his article (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/15/opinion/trump-classified-data.html) by assuaging the fears that Trump was "a budding authoritarian, a corrupt Nixon, a rabble-rousing populist, or a big business corporatist," by pointing out that

"At base, Trump is an infantalist" which means he is incapable of having those attributes in any realistic fashion. He points out that most adults have 'sort of' figured out three tasks by the time they are 25.

The first, how to sit still.

The second, a sense of themselves.

And the third, a perception of how others are thinking. (Boutons b/g: German study says this starts at age 4)

Brooks said that Trump mastered none of them,

Brooks slams Trump's level of maturity. We must remember that this is the world 'leader' who has the nuclear codes.

Mentally, Trump is still a 7-year-old boy who is bouncing around the classroom. Trump’s answers in these interviews are not very long — 200 words at the high end — but

he will typically flit through four or five topics before ending up with how unfair the press is to him. :lol

He points out that the president has no ability to focus or impulse control.

His inability to focus his attention makes it hard for him to learn and master facts.

He is ill informed about his own policies and

tramples his own talking points.

It makes it hard to control his mouth.

On an impulse, he will promise a tax reform when his staff has done little of the actual work.

He describes Trump's damaging level of insecurity.

Trump seems to need perpetual outside approval to stabilize his sense of self,

so he is perpetually desperate for approval,

telling heroic fabulist tales about himself. ...

He wants people to love him, so he is constantly telling interviewers that he is widely loved.

In Trump’s telling, every meeting was scheduled for 15 minutes but his guests stayed two hours because they liked him so much.

But the most dangerous attribute Trump has is his inability to know what he does not know.

He is thus the all-time record-holder of the Dunning-Kruger effect, the phenomenon in which

the incompetent person is too incompetent to understand his own incompetence.

David Brooks points out that the Trump's most recent screw-up, revealing classified information to the Russians, was not necessarily the case that the American president is a Russian agent, but instead because of the attributes mentioned above.

He did it because he is sloppy,

because he lacks all impulse control, and

above all because he is a 7-year-old boy desperate for the approval of those he admires.

Brooks point out that

"there is perpetually less to Trump than it appears"

which means one should not try to analyze what big scheme or machinations are driving the president's actions or policies.

Trump’s statements don’t necessarily come from anywhere, lead anywhere or have a permanent reality beyond his wish to be liked at any given instant.

We’ve got this perverse situation in which the

vast analytic powers of the entire world are being spent trying to understand a guy whose thoughts are often just six fireflies beeping randomly in a jar.

David then quotes Vox's (https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/5/12/15621140/interpret-trump), David Roberts.

We badly want to understand Trump, to grasp him. It might give us some sense of control, or at least an ability to predict what he will do next.

But what if there’s nothing to understand? What if there’s no there, there?

Trump biographer: ‘Entirely predictable’ scandals show president is a ‘clear and present danger’

David Cay Johnston penned a scathing editorial published Wednesday at The Daily Beast (http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/05/17/donald-trump-is-a-clear-and-present-danger) in which he called the former reality TV game show host a “clear and present danger” to the United States who is “contemptuous of the Constitution, compromised by the Russians and willing to try any lie to hang onto power.”

“Recklessly firing FBI (http://www.thedailybeast.com/keyword/federal-bureau-of-investigation) Director Jim Comey (http://www.thedailybeast.com/keyword/james-comey) eliminated any remaining doubt: Donald Trump (http://www.thedailybeast.com/keyword/donald-trump) and his administration cannot be trusted to have any role in investigating his and his entourage’s relationship with Russia (http://www.thedailybeast.com/keyword/russia) and Russians. Yet he is about to seize control of that probe, while the

Republican-controlled Congress (http://www.thedailybeast.com/keyword/congress) acts less like a coequal branch of government and more like a White House subsidiary,” Johnston wrote.

He continued, “Compounding this, the White House’s efforts Monday to deceive the American public about the president giving Russia (http://www.thedailybeast.com/keyword/russia) super-secret intelligence only add to the reasons to distrust his competence, integrity and, indeed, suspect his loyalty.”

The past week has seen the White House plunged into chaos (http://www.rawstory.com/2017/05/completely-fcked-trumps-white-house-staff-admit-the-comey-memo-is-the-beginning-of-the-end/) as Trump systematically undercut his subordinates’ messaging only to have Comey announce on Tuesday (https://www.rawstory.com/2017/05/watergates-john-dean-comey-memos-are-the-smoking-gun-that-could-bring-down-trump-like-nixon/) that he has kept detailed records of his and Trump’s conversations, particularly when the ousted FBI director believed he was being pushed into a politically compromising position.

Johnston also noted Trump only fired Mike Flynn — who he knew was a paid agent of Russia and Turkey — after Flynn’s duplicity was exposed by the Washington Post.

“Take a moment to let that sink in:

Donald Trump’s national security adviser was a paid agent of a foreign government.

And while

that government was Turkey, the money came from a Russian oligarch (http://www.politico.com/story/2017/04/25/michael-flynn-turkey-russia-237550),

Putin’s Russia Today propaganda television operation also paid Flynn handsomely,” he said.

“Trump, keep in mind, has pocketed hundreds of millions of dollars from real estate deals with Russians. Yet he insists any mention of him and Russia is fake news,” wrote Johnston.

It’s clear, he wrote, that “America has a president who is

contemptuous of the Constitution,

compromised by the Russians and

willing to try any lie to hang onto power.”
