NATION FAVORS TRAVEL BAN ON PERSON WHO HAS RECENTLY VISITED MUSLIM COUNTRY

http://www.newyorker.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Borowitz-Trump-travel-ban-800.jpg

RIYADH —In a notable shift of public opinion, a substantial majority of Americans now favor a travel ban on a person who has recently visited a Muslim country, a new poll shows.

According to the poll, if such a person travelled to a country in the Middle East, for example,

he should be subjected to extreme vetting before he is allowed to return to the United States.

If, in the course of such vetting,

the person is found to have recently engaged in activities to undermine or even destroy American democracy in collaboration with a foreign enemy, he should be barred forever from entering the U.S.,

poll respondents agreed.

In sizable numbers, those polled “strongly agreed” with the statement,

“Any American who travels to a Muslim country with the intention of selling them deadly weapons should not be allowed to return.”

Finally, a broad majority of poll respondents said that if such a person were to remain outside the borders of the U.S. forever, they would “sleep better at night.”

WATCH: Israeli ambassador visibly flummoxed when Trump implies Israel is not in the Middle East

“Our Secretary of State has done an incredible job,” Trump said at a meeting with Dermer, Rex Tillerson and other U.S. and Israeli officials. That’s when the president made this geographical blunder:

“We just got back from the Middle East,” Trump said to the room. “We just got back from Saudi Arabia.”

Dermer can be seen stifling a laugh while he throws his face in his hand. He quickly moves his hand through his hair, disguising his inability to handle the president’s gaffe.

Is Donald Trump’s casino empire linked to money laundering? Past financial crimes may be the president’s biggest problem

Campaign collusion could become an afterthought as investigators begin to focus on the Atlantic City money trail

It was just another day of gaffes, scandals and lawbreaking in the era of Trump.

the Russia investigation had expanded to include a member of the White House staff who is close to the president:

Although the case began quietly last July as an effort to determine whether any Trump associates coordinated with Russian operatives to meddle in the presidential election campaign, the investigative work now being done by the FBI

also includes determining whether any financial crimes were committed by people close to the president …

While there has been a loud public debate in recent days over the question of whether the president might have attempted to obstruct justice in his private dealings with Comey, whom Trump fired last week, people familiar with the matter said

investigators on the case are more focused on Russian influence operations and possible financial crimes.

Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo observed (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/financial-crimes-and-why-trump-is-right-to-worry) that the investigation may be homing in on the story he’s been following for some time about Trump’s business and financial dealings over the decades with a whole cast of nefarious characters,

including authentic mobster Felix Sater, who has ties to Russian oligarchs and gangsters and may be a U.S. government informant.

Over and over again in Trump’s past you find connections to criminals and shady characters who operate on the very edge of legality. Marshall notes that for the past couple of decades, Trump has had a specific business model:

Cut off from capital from the big banks and most people interested in not losing their money

, he had to do business with people with decidedly sketchier reputations. Those people, often looking for places to park wealth in real estate, had to accept much higher levels of risk than people with clean reputations. That seemed to lead them to Trump.

the Trump Taj Mahal casino broke money-laundering rules 106 times in the first year and half of operation and paid nearly half a million dollars in fines in just one settlement agreement in 1998.

The network reported: (http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/22/politics/trump-taj-mahal/index.html?sr=twCNN052217trump-taj-mahal-closed0111PMVODtopLink&linkId=37866730)

According to a dozen anti-money laundering experts, casinos often run into these problems. But

getting caught with 106 violations in the casino’s opening years is an indicator of a serious problem

, they said. The violations date back to a time when

the Taj Mahal was the preferred gambling spot for Russian mobsters living in Brooklyn

, according to federal investigators who tracked organized crime in New York City. They also occurred at a time

when the Taj Mahal casino was short on cash and on the verge of bankruptcy.

just four months before Trump descended from his golden escalator to announce his candidacy:

The parent of Trump Taj Mahal, one of Atlantic City, New Jersey’s struggling casinos, has settled U.S. government charges that it violated federal laws designed to thwart money laundering, court filings show.

Trump Taj Mahal agreed to the assessment of a $10 million civil penalty by the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network,

according to a proposed consent order filed on Tuesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Delaware.

The violations in that case went back to 2003.

Casinos are an obvious choice for money launderers. So is real estate, for that matter. And Trump has been closely associated for years with the kind of people who dabble in such behavior, including Russian mobsters.

he surely has enough street smarts to know that once the authorities get all up in your business they will follow wherever the trail leads.

There’s a reason that the president refuses to be transparent about his financial dealings and we know it isn’t because he’s so modest.

He’s hiding something, and a special prosecutor with a mandate to look into financial crimes is probably going to find out what it is.

President Trump's Budget Includes a $2 Trillion Math Mistake

President Trump's budget includes simple accounting error that adds up to a $2 trillion oversight.

Under the proposed budget released Tuesday, the Trump Administration's proposed tax cuts would boost economic growth enough to pay for $1.3 trillion in spending by 2027. But the tax cuts are also supposed to be revenue-neutral, meaning that trillion dollars is already supposed to pay for the money lost from the tax cuts.

Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers called the oversight an "elementary double count" and "a logical error of the kind that would justify failing a student in an introductory economics course" in an op-ed in the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/05/23/larry-summers-trumps-budget-is-simply-ludicrous/?utm_term=.1d7254cfa1aa).

The idea that the tax cuts would pay for anything already was criticized. Over the years, it's been a reliable staple of Republican rhetoric about taxes that lowering the rates would lead to a boom in the economy that would offset the loss in revenue, but economists say the idea is often oversold (http://fortune.com/2017/04/27/supply-side-tax-cut-trump/).

According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, for Trump's tax cuts to pay for themselves, the economy would have to grow at 4.5 percent over the next 10 years (http://www.crfb.org/blogs/how-much-will-trumps-tax-plan-cost). That's two and a half times the growth rate projected by the Congressional Budget Office.

So what's the most likely result of Trump's plan?

The nonpartisan group projected that the tax cuts would cost the government between $3 and $7 trillion over the next decade.

Dropping Shoe Watch:

"Every Day He Looks More and More Like a Complete Moron"

“Okay, he fired Comey,” the official conceded. “With a semi-competent comms operation, that would blow over in 24 hours. And that’s the worst part: he has a competent comms staff. But they can’t do their jobs because he keeps running his mouth.”

....Trump’s repeated media missteps have frustrated even longtime supporters. “Every day he looks more and more like a complete moron,” said one senior administration official who also worked on Trump’s campaign.

“I can’t see Trump resigning or even being impeached, but at this point I wish he’d grow a brain and be the man that he sold himself as on the campaign.”

Asked whether an administration staff change-up would ameliorate this latest crisis, a Republican source formerly involved with a pro-Trump political group told The Daily Beast,

“yes, if it comes with a frontal lobotomy for Trump.”

Trump is already working on ways to sabotage its own special counsel: (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-mueller-idUSKCN18F2KK)

The Trump administration is exploring whether it can use an obscure ethics rule to undermine the special counsel investigation into ties between President Donald Trump's campaign team and Russia, two people familiar with White House thinking said on Friday.

Preventing the special counsel from investigating Manafort hardly seems worth the trouble. He's not close enough to the White House to cause too many problems even if he does turn out to be involved in something fishy.

So that leaves Kushner.

Is he the guy the Trumpies are trying to protect?

REMAINING COUNTRIES ON TRUMP’S ITINERARY SAY THEY’D RATHER WAIT A MONTH AND MEET WITH NEXT PRESIDENT

BRUSSELS — Donald J. Trump’s foreign trip hit a snag on Tuesday, when the remaining countries on his itinerary announced that they would rather “wait a month” and meet with the next President instead.

“It makes no sense for us to roll out the red carpet for Trump when there is going to be a completely different guy in the White House in a month,” Hendrik van der Valde, a travel minister for the Belgian government, said.

“We very much look forward to hosting the next U.S. President, be it Mike Pence or Paul Ryan or whoever.”

Citing the exorbitant costs of hosting a President, the Belgian said

it “would be insane” to spend such sums on someone who “only has a few weeks left” in office.

“When a President comes to your country, you have to feed not only him but a whole plane full of people that he brings,” the minister added.

“Jared Kushner, for example, eats a ton, and no one even knows what he does.”

nato ministers, who had been slated to meet with Trump in Brussels on Thursday, voted unanimously last night to reschedule the meeting for June to accommodate his replacement.

According to one nato minister,

“We don’t see why we should be speaking to Donald Trump when even Melania isn’t doing that.”

Dem Reps Ask Deutsche Bank For Info On Trump Accounts, Ties To Russia

Democratic lawmakers on Wednesday asked Deutsche Bank for information on the accounts that President Donald Trump and members of his family hold at the bank.

In a letter to Deutsche Bank CEO John Cryan, Democratic members of Congress cited the bank’s “pattern of involvement in money laundering schemes with primarily Russian participation” and its “unconventional relationship” with Trump.

Deutsche Bank is one of the few major banks that has continued (https://www.wsj.com/articles/when-donald-trump-needs-a-loan-he-chooses-deutsche-bank-1458379806) to do business with Trump through multiple bankruptcy filings over nearly two decades.

Deutsche Bank fined for $10 billion Russian money-laundering scheme

The big fines keep coming for Deutsche Bank.

The giant German lender was hit with about $630 million in penalties on Tuesday over a $10 billion Russian money-laundering scheme that involved its Moscow, New York and London branches.

It follows a $7.2 billion settlement (http://money.cnn.com/2016/12/22/investing/deutsche-bank-fine-us-doj/?iid=EL) Deutsche Bank reached with the U.S. Department of Justice last month over toxic mortgage assets and the $2.5 billion (http://money.cnn.com/2015/04/23/news/deutsche-bank-libor-settlement/?iid=EL) it agreed to pay in 2015 over interest rate manipulation.

The latest fines penalize Deutsche Bank (DB (http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?symb=DB&source=story_quote_link))'s failure to deal with a stock-trading scheme that

enabled some of its clients in Russia to improperly move huge sums of money out of the country and into offshore accounts, according to regulators.

(http://money.cnn.com/2016/12/23/investing/banks-fines-mortgages/?iid=EL)"The bank missed numerous opportunities to detect, investigate and stop the scheme due to extensive compliance failures, allowing the scheme to continue for years,"

the New York State Department of Financial Services said in a statement. (http://www.dfs.ny.gov/about/press/pr1701301.htm)

Deutsche Bank was fined $425 million by the New York agency and £163 million ($204 million) by the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority. (https://www.fca.org.uk/news/press-releases/fca-fines-deutsche-bank-163-million-anti-money-laundering-controls-failure)

Does anyone want to stay at Trump’s Manhattan hotel anymore?

Business at Trump's hotel in the trendy neighborhood of SoHo is suffering — and layoffs are looming

Trump SoHo is in trouble. Five months into President Donald Trump’s polarizing presidency, the lower Manhattan hotel is experiencing a decline in corporate events, and hotel layoffs are coming.

At least in New York City, the Trump marquee is turning people away.
At its peak, one could spend $700 a night to stay at the five-star hotel, but now rooms have dropped to nearly half that—well below surrounding five-star hotels in the area, and even bordering the four-star hotel price range.

Koi, the restaurant that was located on the ground floor of Trump SoHo has closed, citing a decline in business, and the election of Trump as the turning point.

Trump Organization Reportedly Not Tracking Foreign Donations

The Trump Organization has not been tracking donations and income generated by foreign entities,

The revelation poses significant implications given the president’s campaign promise to donate foreign profits to the treasure if elected.

“He is going to voluntarily donate all profits from foreign government payments made to his hotels to the U.S. Treasury,” Trump lawyer, Sheri Dillon said in January, Time (http://time.com/4631595/donald-trump-hotels-treasury-foreign-government/) reported. “This way it is the American people who profit.” :lol

the Trump Organization does not “attempt to identify individual travelers who have not specifically identified themselves as being a representative of a foreign government entity,”

“To attempt to individually track and distinctly attribute certain business-related costs as specifically identifiable to a particular customer group is not practical.”

Dillon dismissed suggestions that foreign donations to Trump violated the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, a bevy of legal experts (http://lawnewz.com/high-profile/harvard-law-prof-trumps-plan-is-living-walking-talking-tweeting-violation-of-the-emoluments-clause/) have not been as certain. There is presently an open federal lawsuit (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/two-plaintiffs-join-suit-against-trump-alleging-breach-of-emoluments-clause/2017/04/17/1d4aaa70-238a-11e7-a1b3-faff0034e2de_story.html?utm_term=.6800cc56de69) against Trump for violating the clause.

BUSTED: Mar-A-Lago employee and convict’s wife working for Trump during overseas junket

According to BuzzFeed News (https://www.buzzfeed.com/tariniparti/a-top-mar-a-lago-employee-is-quietly-doing-government-work?utm_term=.hhMvLwDG#.pq9r0dBG), the reception manager at President Donald Trump’s “Winter White House” of Mar-A-Lago is working logistics on the European leg of the president’s first overseas trip.

The manager, Heather Rinkus, has reportedly also been given a government-issued Blackberry and email. The report noted that neither the White House nor the Trump Organization responded to questions about whether Rinkus’ trip is being paid for by the White House or Mar-A-Lago.

Rinkus is married to two-time convicted felon Ari Rinkus (https://www.buzzfeed.com/tariniparti/the-convicted-con-artist-of-mar-a-lago?utm_term=.cdnApqMQ#.trrNlRYn), who has reportedly bragged about his wife’s access to the president. Ari Rinkus is currently on probation for his role in a Ponzi scheme. :lol

Heather Rinkus reportedly began working at Mar-A-Lago in 2015, and

prior to that, worked for Amway Hotel Corporation, which is owned by the family of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. :lol

The US tourism business is in trouble — and President Trump may be to blame, reports Business Insider (http://www.businessinsider.com/trumps-rhetoric-hurt-us-tourism-and-retail-2017-5).

America’s share of international tourism has dropped 16% in March, compared to the same month in 2016, according to Foursquare data (https://medium.com/foursquare-direct/coming-to-america-528312934221) released Wednesday.

‘Painful to watch’: Andrea Mitchell and Kelly O’Donnell torch Trump’s ‘scolding’ of NATO allies

President Donald Trump drew widespread criticism from foreign policy experts on Thursday when he delivered a speech at NATO headquarters in which

he slammed our allies for not spending enough on defense, while also

neglecting to endorse Article 5, which outlines the principles of collective defense.

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell reacted to Trump’s speech with shock by noting that Trump showed obvious contempt for our allies in Europe — and she said she had a hard time watching him.

“This was, by all accounts, watching it, just painful to watch,” she said.

“This was his debut at NATO and they were really angry.”

NBC News reporter Kelly O’Donnell noted that stark contrast between how graciously Trump behaved during his stay in Saudi Arabia versus how he behaved while in Brussels.

Mitchell also noted that NATO’s Article 5 has only been invoked once — when all NATO nations came together to help the United States retaliate after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Voters nervous about Trump controversies: poll

The investigation into President Donald Trump's ties to Russia—and the recent bombshell news reports on the subject—have left most American voters feeling nervous, according to a new poll released Thursday.

A majority of registered voters, 55 percent, said that controversies surrounding Trump "were making them nervous about the future of the country,"

83 percent of Democrats saying they felt nervous about the future of the country, compared with 27 percent of Republicans. Forty percent of voters overall, and 62 percent of Democrats, said the Trump controversies left them feeling anxiety. Forty-three percent of voters said they worried about the future of their families.

Nerves and anxiety seem to be the defining feature of the Trump presidency for many Americans. Asked to describe which words accurately described their overall feeling about the U.S. moving forward, 53 percent said nervous, 49 percent said anxious and 43 percent said scared.

Trump's many controversies have cast a shadow over his brief tenure in the White House, especially those surrounding his advisers' alleged ties to and contact with Russia

the Russia-related stories aren't the only Trump's controversies that could be making Americans nervous. Morning Consult cited, for instance, "potential conflicts of interest (https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2017/05/donald-trump-conflicts-of-interests/508382/) regarding the Trump Organization."

Belgians to Donald Trump: ‘We love our hellhole’

Prominent Belgians have teamed up with a local newspaper to welcome Donald Trump (http://www.newsweek.com/melania-trump-donald-pope-francis-fat-shaming-president-weight-joke-potizza-614711) to Brussels with a message: “We love our hellhole!”

The U.S. President, who said in a 2016 Fox News interview that Brussels residents were “living in a hellhole,” is in the city for meetings with EU, national and Nato leaders (http://www.newsweek.com/emmanuel-macron-donald-trump-europe-meeting-eu-614778) on Thursday.

Don’t Forget: Trump Is Brazenly Lying about NATO

We just saw this embarrassing spectacle of President Trump not stating an unequivocal commitment to honoring Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which requires all member state to defend another member state under attack. But Trump also returned to this issue of NATO members being behind on their payments and

owing the United States huge sums of money. This is simply false.

And it is a falsehood in the service of President Trump’s still not fully explained desire to undermine NATO.

There are two funding issues with NATO. A few years ago, NATO decided to require all member states to spend 2% of GDP on defense spending. The great majority of member states currently spend less than 2%. The ones who do meet that number are the US and a handful of states mainly on NATO’s eastern periphery. But they have until 2024 to reach that goal. So even on the terms of the agreement itself, they’re not behind.

But the key point is that these are not payments owed to the US. They are spending on each country’s own military.

There are lots of reasons for that, not least of which is keeping the alliance a real alliance and not one superpower military along with other armies which are either so small or have such low readiness that they don’t add to the force the US can bring to bear on its own.

The relevant point is that that this is a relatively new agreement, which most of the key states are increasing spending to meet – though some faster than others. They’re not behind schedule. They have until 2024.

Separately there are direct contributions from each member state to NATO’s joint operations, costs of the specifically NATO activities etc. – a bit under $1.5 billion. The US pays by far the largest share of that. But that’s because the contributions are based on a formula that broadly tracks national wealth. The US pays 22%, Germany pays 14.6%, France 10.6%, Britain 9.84%. So it’s judged on the basis of ability to pay.

Trump Reportedly Called Germans ‘Very Bad,’ Vowed To Stop German Car Sales In The U.S.

“See the millions of cars they are selling in the U.S. Terrible.”

During a meeting with top leaders of the European Union, President Donald Trump said “the Germans are bad, very bad,” according to participants in the room who spoke to German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel.

Trump’s specific criticism was that Germany’s auto industry exported cars.

“See the millions of cars they are selling in the U.S. Terrible,” Der Spiegel reports (http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/donald-trump-bei-der-eu-die-deutschen-sind-boese-sehr-boese-a-1149282.html) he said. “We will stop this.”

Another German newspaper, Süddeutsche Zeitung, reported that E.U. representatives felt their U.S. counterparts did not understand that the E.U. negotiates trade agreements as a single entity, rather than on a country-to-country basis. That is,

the U.S. can negotiate trade deals with the E.U. as a whole, but not individually with the separate members of the E.U.

Der Spiegel reported that Gary Cohn, the director of Trump’s National Economic Council, appeared to believe that the U.S. could negotiate different trade deals with Germany and Belgium.

This is not the first time this basic misunderstanding has cropped up. When German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited the White House in March, she

had to explain how E.U. trade deals were negotiated almost a dozen times,

a senior German official told the Times of London (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/angela-merkel-donald-trump-explain-eu-trade-11-times-germany-chancellor-us-president-a7699591.html).

“Ten times Trump asked [Merkel] if he could negotiate a trade deal with Germany. Every time she replied, ‘You can’t do a trade deal with Germany, only the EU,’” the official said. “On the eleventh refusal, Trump finally got the message, ‘Oh, we’ll do a deal with Europe then.’”

The GOP inherits what Trump has wrought

The angry forces that propelled President Trump’s rise are beginning to frame and define the rest of the Republican Party.

When GOP House candidate Greg Gianforte assaulted a reporter who had attempted to ask him a question Wednesday night in Montana, many saw not an isolated outburst by an individual, but the obvious, violent result of Trump’s charge that journalists are “the enemy of the people.” Nonetheless, Gianforte won Thursday’s special election to fill a safe Republican seat.

“Respectfully, I’d submit that the president has unearthed some demons,” Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) said. “I’ve talked to a number of people about it back home. They say,

‘Well, look, if the president can say whatever, why can’t I say whatever?’ He’s given them license.”

Trump — and specifically, his character and his conduct — now thoroughly dominate the national political conversation.

Traditional policy arguments over whether entitlement programs should be overhauled, or taxes cut, are regularly upstaged by a new burst of pyrotechnics.

Charlie Sykes, a conservative former talk-show host in Wisconsin and author of the forthcoming

“How the Right Lost Its Mind,”

said

“every time something like Montana happens, Republicans adjust their standards and put an emphasis on team loyalty. They normalize and accept previously unacceptable behavior.”

TRUMP CALLED RODRIGO DUTERTE TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON HIS MURDEROUS DRUG WAR: “YOU ARE DOING AN AMAZING JOB” (https://theintercept.com/2017/05/23/trump-called-rodrigo-duterte-to-congratulate-him-on-his-murderous-drug-war-you-are-doing-an-amazing-job/)

IN A PHONE CALL from the White House late last month, U.S. President Donald Trump heaped praise on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, one of the world’s most murderous heads of state, for doing what Trump called an “unbelievable job” in his war on drugs.

Trump offered an unqualified endorsement of Duterte’s bloody extermination campaign against suspected drug dealers and users, which has included open calls for extrajudicial murders and promises of pardons and immunity for the killers.

“You are a good man,” Trump told Duterte, according to an official transcript (https://theintercept.com/2017/05/23/read-the-full-transcript-of-trumps-call-with-philippine-president-rodrigo-duterte/) of the April 29 call produced by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs and obtained by The Intercept.

“Keep up the good work,” Trump told Duterte. “You are doing an amazing job.”

Trump began the call by telling Duterte, “You don’t sleep much, you’re just like me,” before quickly pivoting to the strongman’s drug war.

“I just wanted to congratulate you because I am hearing of the unbelievable job on the drug problem,” Trump told Duterte at the beginning of their call, according to the document. “Many countries have the problem, we have a problem, but what a great job you are doing and I just wanted to call and tell you that.”

“Thank you Mr. President,” replied Duterte. “This is the scourge of my nation now and I have to do something to preserve the Filipino nation.”

We ‘must speak out’: Yale psychiatrist sounds the alarm on Trump’s ‘grave mental disabilities’

“This situation has come to such a critical level,” Lee told Salon when asked why she is compelled to speak out about the president.

“In fact, a state of emergency exists and we could no longer hold back.

We have an obligation to speak about Donald Trump’s mental health issues because many lives and our survival as a species may be at stake.”

When asked to describe what she believes to be symptoms of the president’s mental “impairment,” Lee gave multiple examples.

“He has a great need for adulation,” she said. “He is angry if reality does not meet his needs.”
Trump’s apparently skewed reality, Lee said, is one of her biggest concerns.

“People have been expecting him to settle into his role and become normal or more ‘presidential, but that does not ordinarily happen among those with such personality traits,” she said.

“In fact, what we’re seeing is

a creation of his own reality, a reality that will meet Trump’s own emotional needs and the need to impose that reality on others.

It is his imperviousness to facts and reality that could place us all at great risk.”

“In an ordinary situation where matters were not so intense, we could balance out our political activism and separate that from our professional goals and actions,” Lee said.

“But when there is such a grave mental disability that is affecting the public sphere, the political sphere, such as in the current position of power, then those lines get blurred.”
Despite some of her colleagues being threatened with seized licenses for breaking the Goldwater rule, Lee said she couldn’t keep quiet any longer.

“In my case,” she said, “it became a grave enough emergency that my conscience would not let me rest in peace if I did not do something about it.”

Conservatives Complain That Republicans Have a Liberal Bias

Trump’s negative media coverage is being driven not by Democrats but by law-enforcement sources and pissed-off Republicans.

Trump’s young presidency has been a train wreck, his White House has been mired in largely self-inflicted scandals, and his legislative agenda has so far gotten nowhere in Congress. And Trump, unlike his predecessors, has a penchant for impulsively tweeting dubious claims and inflammatory nonsense. The study also found that the sheer volume of Trump coverage—he was the subject of four of every 10 news stories in the outlets studied—dwarfs that of previous administrations.

But that’s not the real story.

The real story is that Trump’s negative coverage is being driven not by liberals or Democrats but by law-enforcement sources and pissed-off Republicans.

here’s a key point, as it relates to that first category:

“Republican voices,” wrote Patterson, “accounted for 80 percent of what newsmakers said about the Trump presidency, compared to only 6 percent for Democrats and 3 percent for those involved in anti-Trump protests.”

So the coverage has not featured a bunch of liberals complaining about Trump—Democrats and those engaged with the anti-Trump resistance were few and far between. “The fact that Trump has received more negative coverage than his predecessor is hardly surprising,” the report says. “The early days of his presidency have been marked by far more missteps and miss-hits, often self-inflicted, than any presidency in memory, perhaps ever.”

we do know that Trump’s own staff—people close to him—have been the source of a number of negative stories

, and we know, thanks to White House leaks, that Trump’s staff often leaks information to the press because, as the very conservative Erick Erickson reported (http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/the-administration/333677-opinion-with-lives-at-risk-trumps-aides-have-no),

“sometimes the president will not take advice.

Sometimes the president treats suggestions as criticism.

More often than not, the president is vastly more interested in what the media says about him than what his advisers in his employ say to him.”

“White House staff have ample incentive to leak to the press when they believe the president needs to pay attention or be admonished.”

Law-enforcement and intelligence agencies have been the other big source of leaks.

They’re not all right-wingers, of course, and their motives for leaking include, depending on how you look at it, either revenge for Trump’s many assaults on the intelligence community, or a principled defense of institutions they see as vital to our national security. Neither of those things represents ideological bias.

the Shorenstein study did find significant bias at one media outlet: Fox News was a lone outlier in that almost half of its Trump coverage was positive.

Looking back at 100 days marked by chaos and failure, it’s hard to imagine what a truly fair and balanced news outlet possibly could have covered in order to run so many positive segments.

Trump Will Reportedly Soon Announce Rollback of Obama’s Cuba Policies

anonymous sources attributed Trump’s decision-making on the issue to lobbying by conservative Cuban-American members of congress, including Democratic New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez and Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida,

“The Trump Administration has been ‘ready’ since February 2017 to announce changes, but issues unrelated to Cuba have intervened.” :lol

During his tenure as president, Barack Obama ushered in a series of eased trade and travel measures as part of his so-called “Cuban Thaw (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_Thaw)“–thought to be of the few enduring aspects of the Obama presidency. Chief among those measures was

an end to the “wet foot, dry foot” policy which gave preferential treatment (http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/12/politics/us-to-end-wet-foot-dry-foot-policy-for-cubans/) to Cuban immigrants above other groups by offering an expedited path to legal status in the United States.

One of Obama’s more popular Cuba policies was lifting restrictions on the importation of Cuban rum and cigars (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2016/10/14/obama-cuba-regulations-expands-trade-travel-rum-cigars/92042662/).

Travel to the Caribbean island nation was also effectively reinstated (http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2015/01/15/cuba_travel_categories_12_types_of_visit_legally_a llowed_without_prior_permission.html) for many Americans after a more than five-decades-long ban.

All those of policies are now said to be on the chopping block.

White House staff ‘gnashing their teeth’ over ‘toxic’ Lewandowski’s imminent return

http://2d0yaz2jiom3c6vy7e7e5svk.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/corey_lewandowski-800x430.png

news that his fired ex-campaign manager Corey Lewandowski may return to lead the president’s Russia “war room” has, according to The Daily Beast (http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/05/30/trump-aides-dreading-a-return-of-trainwreck-corey-lewandowski), caused concern among staffers.

Lewandowski’s imminent return is the reported cause of “senior Trump administration officials gnashing their teeth” in trepidation for the president’s former campaign manager to come into the Trump administration in a “crisis management” capacity.

“It would be another trainwreck,” an anonymous White House official “bluntly” told the Beast. The official said they’re “dreading that it could even happen,” but that it appears Lewandowski will, at the very least, be “outside” the White House itself.

Other White House staffers who spoke with the Beast confirmed that Lewandowski “won’t be in the White House proper,” and will be more of a “shadow adviser”.

“When, not if, he does something crazy, there’ll at least be a degree of separation,” one official noted.

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report (http://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report))—Donald J. Trump tweeted early Wednesday morning that his practice of sleeping only four hours a day was having no impact whatsoever on his ability to cljjryff.

Trump, who repeatedly touted his high energy level during the 2016 campaign, tweeted that, despite his gruelling Presidential schedule,

he still had enormous reserves of stamina, which he called “stamgygygyggy.”

In the same tweetstorm,

The White House said that, despite pleas from his legal team to delete his Twitter feed, Trump planned to continue tweeting, and that

Bombshell Poll Reveals Voters Want Trump Impeached, Not For Russia, Because He Is Mentally Unfit

The Russia scandal is big, but among the growing number of voters who favor impeaching Trump in the Politico/Morning Consult poll, the reason they want the President removed from office isn't crimes, but that he is unfit to occupy the Oval Office.

The Morning Consult/Politico poll has been one of the more favorable polls to Trump, but even their poll revealed that

support for impeachment has grown from 38% to 43% since their last poll.

Morning Consult reported on their poll, (https://morningconsult.com/2017/05/31/voters-show-growing-appetite-trump-impeachment/) “For the Americans who said they want to see Republicans impeach a sitting president of their own party, their desire appears to be borne from the notion that Trump is generally unfit for office.

More than half (54 percent) of the voters who said Trump should be impeached said it was because “he is unfit to serve,” while

43 percent said it was because they thought Trump had committed an impeachable offense, such as treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

A majority of Democrats (54 percent) and independents (56 percent) who said Trump should be impeached cited a lack of fitness for the presidency,

while a slim plurality of Republicans (48 percent) agreed.” :lol

The Art of the Trump-Putin deal: Here are 5 things the president may have agreed to do

1. Repudiate NATO.

NATO is the biggest thorn in your side – the alliance that both humiliates you and stymies your ambitions in the Baltics and elsewhere. Trump almost delivered on this last week by pointedly not reaffirming Article 5, which states that an attack on one NATO ally is an attack on all.

2. Antagonize Europe, especially Angela Merkel.

She’s the strongest leader in the West other than Trump, and you’d love to drive a wedge between the U.S. and Germany. Your larger goal is for Europe to no longer depend on the United States, so you can increase Russia’s influence in Europe. Trump has almost delivered one on this, too. Now Merkel even says Europe can no longer depend on America.

3. Reject the Paris accord on the environment.

This will anger America’s other allies around the world and produce a wave of anti-Americanism – all to your advantage. Nothing would satisfy you more than isolating the United States. Seems like Trump is about to deliver on this one, too.

4. Embarks on a new era of protectionism. Or at least anti-trade rhetoric.

This will threaten the West’s economic interdependence, and loosen America’s economic grip on the rest of the world. Trump is on the way to delivering on this one.

5. End the economic sanctions on Russia

imposed after the annexation of Crimea and Russian backing of separatists in eastern Ukraine. No delivery on this as yet, but you understand why. Trump has got to cope with all the suspicion in the U.S. over the deal he made with you to win him the presidency. Once that dies down, he’ll end the sanctions. (In the meantime, he’ll hand back to you two diplomatic compounds that were taken by the U.S. in late December as punishment for Moscow’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.)

And what did you agree to do, Vlad? Not only help him win the presidency, but also shut up about it so he wouldn’t be impeached and then convicted of treason.

In other words – if you did do a deal – Trump is still in the process of delivering on his side of it, as are you.

That’s the art of the deal.

‘Trump seems to have mistaken ethics waivers for pardons’: Bush lawyer blasts possible violation of ethics rules

When the White House gave waivers to lobbyists to allow them to enter the revolving door of the political swamp, they may have violated ethics rules themselves.

According to a New York Times report (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/01/us/politics/stephen-bannon-white-house-ethics-waivers.html?_r=0), the waivers may have skirted federal ethics rules for Steve Bannon.

The exemption allowed White House aides to communicate with Breitbart News.

In fact, the White House issued an exemption that allows all aides to communicate with all news organizations even if they were “a former employer.”

The move comes in the wake of anonymous leaks coming from the president’s own staffers.

The concern was not with the waiver, it was that the waiver was “retroactive.”

“There is no such thing as a retroactive waiver,”

said Walter M. Shaub Jr., the head of the Government Ethics Office.

“If you need a retroactive waiver, you have violated a rule.”

What a bunch of pricks

"One senior White House official characterized disappointing European allies as “a secondary benefit” of Trump’s decision to withdraw."

Trump Has No Idea What He Just Did or the Backlash That Awaits

If he's capable of regret, he'll regret leaving the Paris deal.

He recently went to the strongest US allies at the G-7 without a clear answer, leading the G-6 to isolate the US when it issued its communiqué (http://www.g7italy.it/sites/default/files/documents/G7%20Taormina%20Leaders%27%20Communique_27052017_0 .pdf) that reaffirmed the agreement.

Trump’s nationalist case (Bannon!) to exit Paris "does not allow space for recognition of what the Paris deal really is, which is constructive global engagement that serves America’s long term interests, as part of a system of mutually advantageous compromises."

Two factors will especially hurt the US:

First, the world has been dealing with the US as an unreliable partner on climate change for more than two decades, and leaders still well remember the other times the US reversed course on its promises;

second, the world has never been morealigned in favor of action (http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2016/11/paris-climate-agreement-bfd), making climate change a much bigger factor in the US relationship with its allies in non-climate related issues—from trade to defense to immigration—than it once was.

Trump officials might have taken

note of the consequences of US inconsistency with the 1997 Kyoto climate treaty.

In 2001, Bush officials declared Kyoto dead and withdrew the US from the agreement.

"Kyoto—this is not talking out of school—was not handled as well as it should have been," Bush's Secretary of State* (http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2017/05/trump-will-regret-leaving-paris-climate-deal-0#correction) Colin Powell said (http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/22/world/leaving-for-europe-bush-draws-on-hard-lessons-of-diplomacy.html) in 2002. "And when the blowback came I think it was a sobering experience that everything the American president does has international repercussions."

In her 2011 memoir, then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice detailed the reaction Bush faced in meetings with European leaders. Because of the way the administration handled the abrupt withdrawal, "we suffered through this issue over the years: drawing that early line in the sand helped to establish our reputation for 'unilateralism.' We handled it badly." Rice called it a "self-inflicted wound that could have been avoided."

US withdrawal also shifted the power dynamics across the world and gave Russia, which signed the agreement, greater leverage in international affairs.

Russia's ratification became pivotal to the treaty entering into force, and in turn, it used its ratification to gain Europe's backing to enter the World Trade Organization, even while the US still had outstanding concerns.

(so withdrawing from Paris is YET ANOTHER payback to Pootin for financing Trash's failing businesses and money laundering)

a US exit from Paris not to weaken the world's resolve in addressing climate change as much as it

will create a power vacuum other countries might be eager to fill. (Pootin!)"definitely going to hurt the US with respect to other countries sitting down and negotiating on anything the US is interested in."

"We're creating a vacuum in parts of the world where we have very clear security interests, not just climate, but security in North Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. It creates an opening that China, the EU, and even India can step in and fill." (and Pootin!)

"Global statecraft relies on trust, reputation and credibility, which can be all too easily squandered.

The United States is far better off maintaining a seat at the head of the table rather than standing outside.

If America fails to honor a global agreement that it helped forge, the repercussions will undercut our diplomatic priorities

across the globe, not to mention the country's global standing and the market access of our firms."

Rexxon Tillerson, agrees, preferring the US to retain a seat at the table.

But, white nationalist BANNON GOT TO FUCK THE KNITTER AGAIN.

Trump’s reason for leaving the Paris agreement left Obama’s science adviser stunned

“We’re going to lose tremendous global clout and influence” by withdrawing from the Paris agreement.

Dr. John Holdren, President Barack Obama’s chief science adviser, stunned.

“It’s going to take days to parse all of the misleading statements in there,” Holdren said.

Trump centered his decision on America’s economic interests, claiming the agreement was too costly for the American people. But he completely omitted the severe economic toll (https://thinkprogress.org/trillions-cost-no-c617bc9ff0de) posed by failure to act on climate change, a cost far greater than that of action, Holdren said.

Trump also claims to be protecting U.S. jobs, but his speech totally ignored the economic benefits of clean energy — a sector that is growing much faster (https://thinkprogress.org/clean-energy-more-jobs-than-fossil-fuels-32f615915399) than the economy as a whole.

he delivered an entire address on a major international agreement to limit the worst effects of climate change without once mentioning climate change.

Why did Trump withdraw from Paris? To appease his base

a nonbinding accord dependent on voluntary commitments to reduce greenhouse emissions.

So why provoke a global firestorm of criticism?

Why join Syria and Nicaragua as the only nations to renounce the Paris agreement?

For Trump, the criticism is precisely the point.

It’s an easy way for him to signal to his base that he is implementing his campaign rhetoric of “nationalism” over “globalism.”

The 5 biggest deceptions in Trump’s Paris climate speech

It wasn’t easy narrowing these down.

1) No, an agreement cannot be both nonbinding and draconian (Spoiler: Paris is the former)

2) No, Paris cannot be “renegotiated”

3) No, abiding by the agreement will not cost the US a bazillion dollars

4) No, China and India are not getting away with anything

5) No, other nations are not laughing at us behind our backs — or they weren’t, anyway

“Our tax bill is moving along in Congress, and I believe it’s doing very well,” Trump said

People who knew reality were certainly surprised to hear that the nonexistent bill was “doing very well,”

Trump also opened his remarks by saying that he was “closely monitoring the terrorist attack in Manila.” According to police in the Philippines, it was a robbery, not a terrorist attack (http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/06/01/531081210/resort-in-the-philippines-on-lockdown-after-reports-of-gunfire).

Trump skips his own ‘Pittsburgh not Paris’ rally to play golf

Prresident Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement on Thursday prompted the administration to plan the “Pittsburgh not Paris” rally at the last minute across from the White House.

However, Trump himself was not in attendance.

Instead, the president’s motorcade was seen pulling up to Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia, on Saturday morning, according to reports.

It’s unclear at this time if Trump is playing golf or just visiting his golf course.

However, this does make it the 22nd time that he’s visited a golf course during his term in office.

Trump’s latest unhinged tweetstorm could hasten his downward spiral

it would be a good idea to seize on the London terror carnage to launch a fresh Twitter attack on the courts and on his own Justice Department.

In so doing, he may have given opponents of his immigration ban more ammunition against it in court. Beyond that,

he confirmed once again that a deep rot of bad faith (https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2017/03/30/trump-has-nothing-but-contempt-for-facts-and-reality-based-policy-now-its-backfiring/?utm_term=.33549b89409a) and a profound contempt for process continue to infest much of what this administration does:

Follow (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump)

(https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump)✔@realDonaldTrump (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump)

People, the lawyers and the courts can call it whatever they want, but I am calling it what we need and what it is, a TRAVEL BAN!
5:25 AM - 5 Jun 201 (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/871674214356484096)

Donald J. Trump (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump)

✔@realDonaldTrump (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump)

The Justice Dept. should have stayed with the original Travel Ban, not the watered down, politically correct version they submitted to S.C.
5:29 AM - 5 Jun 2017 (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/871675245043888128)

Trump also tweeted (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/871679061847879682) that “extreme vetting” is necessary to keep our country safe, and added (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/871679061847879682)that “the courts are slow and political!”

Trump’s new tweets are “significant in at least two ways”:

First, they give atmospheric support to the plaintiffs’ arguments, in the various immigration cases, that the immigration executive orders are motivated by invidious discrimination.

Second, the attack on courts makes it much harder for courts, including the Supreme Court, to rule for Trump even when the law is otherwise on his side.

Courts will want to avoid the appearance of having been bullied into ruling for Trump.

The Trump tweets are thus entirely self-defeating for his litigation strategy, assuming he wants to win those cases.

Could Trump’s tweets undercut his administration’s legal defense of the travel ban in some atmospheric sense?

Trump made repeated campaign statements confirming his intent to ban Muslims from the United States.

At one point he suggested (https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2017/01/31/is-this-a-muslim-ban-look-at-the-history-and-at-trumps-own-words/) an immigration ban by territory — which is now the basis for the current one he’s pursuing by executive order banning travel from six majority-Muslim countries — would essentially be a way for him to get his originally intended ban around legal hurdles.

Trump’s tweets today contradict his own press secretary, Sean Spicer, who had previously insisted (http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/317144-spicer-trump-executive-order-not-a-travel-ban) the executive order is not a “ban,”

but is solely a temporary pause only designed to facilitate the improvement of vetting processes.

Trump appears to have confirmed that it is intended as a “ban”

with a few impulsive pokes of the Twitter “send” button. It’s not clear this supports the argument that the ban was discriminatory in intent, but it does suggest in a more general way that

the administration’s rationales for the ban have been offered in bad faith.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2017/06/05/trumps-latest-unhinged-tweetstorm-could-hasten-his-downward-spiral/?utm_term=.6efefcf0f758&wpisrc=nl_most-draw7&wpmm=1

Federal prosecutors in Virginia are investigating a deal between Flynn and Turkish businessman Ekim Alptekin as part of a grand jury criminal probe, according to a subpoena seen by Reuters.

Federal prosecutors in Virginia are investigating a deal between Flynn and Turkish businessman Ekim Alptekin as part of a grand jury criminal probe, according to a subpoena seen by Reuters.

While these actions involve major steps in the investigation phase, at the same time Robert Mueller is also developing the litigation phase. He is putting together a team of prodigious legal talent and experience: a real life Justice League. This story features six of those members: James Quarles III, Allan Lichtman, Andrew Weissmann, Aaron Zebley, Jeannie Rhee and Peter Carr.

New report suggests Jeff Sessions may be the next Trumpster voted off the island

President Donald Trump has “grown sour” on Attorney General Jeff Sessions, according to a bombshell new report on the relationship between the two.

The Times reported that President Trump’s “discontent” is even harsher behind the scenes.

“In private, the president’s exasperation has been even sharper.

He has intermittently fumed for months over Mr. Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the investigation into Russian meddling in last year’s election, according to people close to Mr. Trump who insisted on anonymity to describe internal conversations,”

“In Mr. Trump’s view, they said, it was that

recusal that led eventually to the appointment of a special counsel who took over the investigation.”
If Attorney General Sessions is fired, it will likely be all about Russia.

“The frustration over the travel ban might be a momentary episode were it not for the deeper resentment Mr. Trump feels toward Mr. Sessions, according to people close to the president.

When Mr. Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation, Mr. Trump learned about it only when he was in the middle of another event, and he publicly questioned the decision,”

“In fact, much of the past two months of discomfort and self-inflicted pain for Mr. Trump can be tied in some way back to that recusal,” suggested The Times.

“Mr. Trump felt blindsided by Mr. Sessions’s decision and unleashed his fury at aides in the Oval Office the next day, according to four people familiar with the event.”

Comey bad, Putin good, according to North Carolina Republicans (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/6/5/1669027/-Comey-bad-Putin-good-according-to-North-Carolina-Republicans)

“There’s nothing about Jim Comey that I trust,” said state Sen. Ron Rabin.

“There’s nothing consistent about what he says.”

Asked whether Comey has any credibility, he offered a view shared by many Republican activists gathered at this airy waterfront convention center: “None. Zero.”

“Putin suggested Russia’s being made a scapegoat for hacking,” [secretary of the Union County GOP] said. “That’s what I think too.” [...]

Others didn’t go that far, but a number of people questioned whether Russia had really sought to interfere with the U.S. election.

“We need to do everything we can to become allies with Russia,”

said T.J. Johnson, the vice president of the North Carolina Federation of Republican Men.

“As for election meddling, I don’t think they really had anything to do with it.”

Being a good Republican in this day and age means that you like who Donald Trump likes and his enemies are your enemies.

Loyalty to Dear Leader is all that matters here.

Trump is now raging at Jeff Sessions. This hints at a deeply unsettling pattern.

On Monday, President Trump angrily lashed out (https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2017/06/05/trumps-latest-unhinged-tweetstorm-could-hasten-his-downward-spiral/?utm_term=.9b09e7f4a93f) at the Justice Department for defending the weaker second version of his immigration ban. This was odd, because Trump himself signed the executive order promulgating that revised version, which was ostensibly designed to address the court’s concerns about the first — objections the White House itself said it hoped to address.
But it turns out that Trump’s anger at the Justice Department has a deeper source: rage at Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Trump appears worryingly unable to contemplate his own role in bringing about the special counsel (https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2017/05/18/trump-is-totally-delusional-about-whats-happening-to-him-right-now/?utm_term=.026bfbed9062). The firing of FBI Director James B. Comey led to reports that Trump allegedly demanded Comey’s loyalty and to Trump’s admission that he fired Comey over the Russia probe.

Trump’s seething anger at Sessions is disconcertingly similar to the anger that led him to fire Comey. As the Times previously reported (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/10/us/politics/how-trump-decided-to-fire-james-comey.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=a-lede-package-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news), Trump privately “burned” as he watched Comey testify to Congress about Russia’s efforts to tip the election to Trump, and was “particularly irked” when Comey conceded his own intervention, via a letter about Clinton’s emails, may have influenced the outcome, which Trump “took to demean his own role in history.” The Post added (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/how-trumps-anger-and-impatience-prompted-him-to-fire-the-fbi-director/2017/05/10/d9642334-359c-11e7-b373-418f6849a004_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_comeyreconstruct912pmblurb%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&tid=a_inl&utm_term=.a83f0b68c3ae) that Trump was “infuriated” at the FBI’s failure to investigate and stop leaks, which have led to news accounts detailing what the Russia probe was finding.

Both Comey and Sessions enraged Trump because in some manner or other, they failed to show a level of loyalty to Trump that would have trumped (as it were) legitimate processes.

Comey kept publicly validating the Russia investigation (which Trump dismisses as nothing but “Fake News”) and would not make it disappear by stopping leaks about it. Sessions recused himself to display (nominal) independence, which Trump somehow interpreted as a lapse into weakness that led to the special counsel, further affirming the probe’s weightiness.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2017/06/06/trump-is-now-raging-at-jeff-sessions-this-hints-at-a-deeply-unsettling-pattern/?utm_term=.1c7d02f858a1&wpisrc=nl_most-draw7&wpmm=1

And I know his unorthodox use of social media is thought by some, including the president himself, to be brilliant.

But I don’t see political genius in the invective coming from Trump these days.

I see an angry man lashing out at enemies real and imagined — a man dangerously overwhelmed.

We already knew that Trump had a narrow mind and a small heart.

Now we

Not one-eighth of the way through his term, Donald Trump has each day become more isolated:

from his current director of the National Security Agency and his past director of the FBI (who are both expected to give damaging testimony this week on the Russia scandal);

Biographer who caught Trump lying 30 times: He tried to ‘intimidate’ me by lying about taping conversations

Biiographer Tim O’Brien revealed on Sunday that now-President Donald Trump lied about taping him in an effort to intimidate him.
In 2005, Trump sued O’Brien over his book TrumpNation: The Art of Being the Donald, which suggested that the real estate mogul was worth only $250 million. But

the author turned the tables on Trump and cornered him in a deposition for making at least 30 false statements (https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/politics/2016-election/trump-lies/).

“His loose association with the truth :lol

becomes problematic :lol

when he’s confronted with documents,”

O’Brien explained to CNN host Brian Stelter on Sunday.

“We’ve had decades now of Trump frequently lying or exaggerating about a wide range of things.”

“But when he sat down for the deposition, my attorney said, ‘Mr. Trump, do you have a taping system?'” he recalled.

“And he said no. And [my attorney] said, ‘Why did you say this to Mr. O’Brien.’ And he essentially said, ‘I wanted to intimidate him.'”

Trump is likely to get much, much worse. Here are a few big things to watch for.

Politico’s Playbook this morning tries to sum up the thinking among Republicans (http://www.politico.com/playbook). The gist:

Republicans are increasingly worried they will lose the House amid a “toxic political environment that appears to be worsening.”

They cite the

possibility that they won’t secure any serious legislative wins, as well as “serious concerns” about “more revelations” coming on Trump.

In the background, special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation “remains the wild card.”
The tapes Trump hinted at turn out not to exist.

WHAT HAPPENS IF TRUMP TESTIFIES UNDER OATH? Trump has now said (http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/trump-commits-testify-under-oath-100-percent-n770451) that he’s “100 percent” ready to testify under oath

Fox hypes misleading job creation numbers to credit Trump on the economy

https://cloudfront.mediamatters.org/static/uploader/image/2017/06/12/trumpeconomy.jpg

President Donald Trump took to Twitter on June 11 to echo misleading claims from Fox News that job growth in his first four full months in office was proof of his economic success.

Both Fox and the president failed to notice, however, that

it was the weakest February through May stretch of job growth since the end of the Great Recession. :lol

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/CES0000000001?output_view=net_1mth) (BLS), the economy in fact created 594,000 jobs from February through May of this year.

More jobs were created during the same four-month window in each of the past seven years under President Barack Obama.

Trash is SUCH a deal maker, we are SICK of winning

Sanofi rejects US Army request for ‘fair’ pricing for a Zika vaccine

anofi Pasteur has rejected a request from the US Army to set an affordable US price for a Zika virus vaccine that the company is developing with American taxpayer funds, prompting an angry response from Senator Bernie Sanders.

For months, Sanders has pushed the Army to negotiate a more favorable agreement with Sanofi, which is one of the world’s largest vaccine makers and which has already received a $43 million US research grant. But Sanofi recently refused, according to an Army timeline of events reviewed by STAT.

The rejection comes amid negotiations the Army is holding to grant Sanofi a license to make and sell a Zika vaccine.

But the prospect of giving Sanofi an exclusive license to sell a potential blockbuster — depending upon how extensively the virus travels — at whatever price it wants, has upset various lawmakers (https://www.statnews.com/pharmalot/2017/02/22/army-sanofi-zika-vaccine-license/) and advocacy groups (https://www.statnews.com/pharmalot/2016/12/22/zika-vaccines-army-sanofi/), who are pressing the Army to insist on affordable pricing.

As a result, the deal, which could provide the company with another $130 million in government funds,

has sparked still wider debate about pricing for products that are discovered with US taxpayer dollars.

More evidence, longtitudinal, the Trash'a brain is fucked

Trump wasn’t always so linguistically challenged. What could explain the change?

“ … there is no collusion between certainly myself and my campaign, but I can always speak for myself — and the Russians, zero.”

When President Trump offered that response to a question at a press conference last week, it was the latest example of his tortured syntax, mid-thought changes of subject, and apparent trouble formulating complete sentences, let alone a coherent paragraph, in unscripted speech.

He was not always so linguistically challenged.

STAT reviewed decades of Trump’s on-air interviews and compared them to Q&A sessions since his inauguration. The differences are striking and unmistakable.

Research has shown that changes in speaking style can result from cognitive decline.

STAT therefore asked experts in neurolinguistics and cognitive assessment, as well as psychologists and psychiatrists, to compare Trump’s speech from decades ago to that in 2017;

they all agreed there had been a deterioration, and some said it could reflect changes in the health of Trump’s brain.

Sources both inside and close to the White House are worrying about a loss of energy among the President's base — or as one advisor colorfully put it, the folks who'd "walk over glass" for Trump.

Two trends that are troubling them:Trump's strong approval has fallen quickly:

As Nate Silver outlines in this late May article (https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/donald-trumps-base-is-shrinking/) titled "Donald Trump's base is shrinking":

"There's been a considerable decline in the number of Americans who strongly approve of Trump, from a peak of around 30 percent in February to just 21 or 22 percent of the electorate now.

(The decline in Trump's strong approval ratings is larger than the overall decline in his approval ratings, in fact.)

Far from having unconditional love from his base, Trump has already lost almost a third of his strong support."

Slide among whites without college degrees:

Only 46% of whites with no college degree (https://poll.qu.edu/national/release-detail?ReleaseID=2462) approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president, according to the most recent Quinnipiac University poll.

In the same poll in early March, 60 percent of whites without college degrees (https://poll.qu.edu/national/release-detail?ReleaseID=2436) — a group that was key to Trump's victory — approved of his job performance.

Currently the only thing more unpopular than Trump himself is his health care bill, which has an approval rating of 17% at last glance.

Well, of course that didn’t take long.

Liar? Yup.

Coward? Bigtime.

One wonders how Republican voters feel about having such a coward as their leader.

Like most cowards these days,

Trump hides behind Twitter and often talks a big game… until it comes to actually manning up in the real world:

President Trump will not testify before Congress under oath,

a development that legal experts say was expected but that illustrates the pitfalls of the president’s tendency to shoot from the hip in public remarks. Trump said at a Friday press conference that he would “100%” agree to give sworn testimony in response to former FBI director James Comey’s allegations last week.
...
“I think that was expected,” said national security attorney Bradley Moss…

“This Presidency is marked like none other by a White House tendency to reinterpret the specific words of the President.
:lol WTF?

Every time that happens its credibility suffers,” Zaid said in an email.

GOGOL’S “DEAD SOULS” SHOULD BE ON TRUMP’S SUMMER READING LIST

Donald Trump may not realize it, but he has adopted the strategy that was recommended to Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov, the shady protagonist of Nikolai Gogol’s “Dead Souls (https://www.amazon.com/dp/0679776443/?tag=thneyo0f-20),” whose lawyer (in the translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky) advises him that

“as soon as you see that the case is reaching a denouement and can conveniently be resolved,

make sure—not really to justify and defend yourself—no,

but simply to confuse things by introducing new and even unrelated issues.”

The aim is “to confuse, to confuse, nothing more . . .

to introduce into the case some other, unrelated circumstances that will entangle other people in it, to make it complicated.”

That’s an excellent way to stay one or two steps ahead, although the approach is fallible—after all, you may run out of places to step.

Trump keeps up the confusion

http://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/gogols-dead-souls-should-be-on-trumps-summer-reading-list?mbid=nl_170613_Daily&CNDID=43758549&spMailingID=11248626&spUserID=MTQzNTk4NzA3ODYzS0&spJobID=1181121344&spReportId=MTE4MTEyMTM0NAS2

When US banks were refusing to loan Trash any more "lost $100Ms" ...

Over the next seven days before Christmas, Barrack and his lieutenant, Bill Rogers, would jet from New York to Los Angeles, Taiwan, London and Saudi Arabia, begging billionaires to buy the loans and keep the bankers from Trump's throat.

"He nearly killed me that week," Rogers says now, recounting the frenzied middle-of-the-night flights that kept the $4.5 billion West Side Railyards site from being Trump's burial ground.

"There's one person in this world who has historically had a non-fighting way of working with Donald -- and being successful."

That was back in 1994 when bankers wanted to be done with one of New York’s worst businessmen, Donald Trump.

Sadly, scumbags like Trump tend to get buoyed by other scumbags like Barrack.

On Thursday, June 8, Reveal News published an exposé by Aaron Glanz (https://www.revealnews.org/article/profiting-off-pain-trump-confidant-cashed-in-on-housing-crisis/) that revealed how

Thomas J. Barrack had created one of the largest scumlord rental schemes in the United States.

Most Think Trump Attempted to Obstruct Justice

A new Public Policy Polling survey (http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/2017/06/plurality-of-voters-think-trump-obstructed-justice.html)finds

49% of voters think President Trump obstructed justice, to just 41% who don’t think he did.

Also interesting:

Only 37% of voters say they think Trump is honest, as compared to 56% who say he’s not.

And for the second month in a row a

plurality support for impeachment: 47% are in support compared to 43% who are opposed.

Most Trump Real Estate Deals to Buyers Who Shield Their Identity

“Since President Trump won the Republican nomination, the majority of his companies’ real estate sales are to secretive shell companies that obscure the buyers’ identities,” a USA Today (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/06/13/trump-property-buyers-make-clear-shift-secretive-llcs/102399558/) investigation has found.

“Over the last 12 months, about 70% of buyers of Trump properties were limited liability companies – corporate entities that allow people to purchase property without revealing all of the owners’ names.

That compares with about 4% of buyers in the two years before.”

These are not normal “presidential” declarations—not in form, and not in premise.

To reiterate, the man quite obviously has something wrong with him.

He is publicly paranoid.

He lies constantly and demands constant admiration from those around him.

It's a bit beyond "this man does not have a presidential temperament," though that itself should be sufficient.

It's a narcissistic spiral of rage and self-delusion.

He has repeatedly declared that he is the smartest person in any room, and surrounds himself only with similar geniuses.

The only explanation for the bad news and criticism flooding over his White House, therefore, is that it is all faked to make him look bad.

While this is the common thought process of the red-faced American bunker dweller, it is not normal logic for any supposedly functioning member of society.

The man remains paranoid and only barely hinged, and we cannot suppose his behavior will improve as the pressures of the office continue to rapidly mount.

He might indeed fire the special counsel;

he might institute a brand new war just to bask in the praise of his generals.

There are no limits, and no external Republican forces willing to rein the lunatic in if he were to do any of those lunatic things.

Psychiatrist Uses the Army's Field Manual to Show How Trump Is Mentally Unfit to Be President

the main traits of successful military leaders are the ability to establish trust, the discipline to control your impulses, the ability to think critically, a capacity for self-awareness and reflection, and the willingness to empathize with other people.

Touching on self-discipline, Gourguechon notes that the field manual describes an undisciplined leader as someone who reacts “viscerally or angrily when receiving bad news or conflicting information” and “allows personal emotions to drive decisions or guide responses to emotionally charged situations.”

the field manual says a leader who lacks self-awareness often “unfairly blames subordinates when failures are experienced” and “rejects or lacks interest in feedback.”

the manual explains that a leader who lacks empathy often “shows a lack of concern for others’ emotional distress” and “displays an inability to take another’s perspective.”

Trump has regularly mocked opponents for their appearances, most famously when he ridiculed a disabled reporter (http://www.rawstory.com/2016/05/heres-donald-trumps-new-cringe-inducing-excuse-for-mocking-a-reporters-disability/) during the 2016 presidential campaign. Added to this, Trump has never apologized to anyone for saying cruel things about them.

“Because of Trump’s Twitter habits and other features of the contemporary media landscape, far more data about his behavior are available to everyone — to citizens, journalists and members of Congress,” she writes.

“And we are all free to compare that observable behavior to the list of traits deemed critical for leadership by the U.S. Army.”
