Parsons ends up in a random destination, if he doesn't go to the Lakers IMO..somewhere like Washington or Denver..

Supposedly he wants to sign w/ Orlando.

Spurs can probably get Boursosis and Terrance Jones for the same price of Gasol (12-15 mil). Give me Boursosis and T. Jones, please. Love Jones' skill set, size, length, agility, age -- he'd be a nice piece moving forward w/ Leonard/Aldridge/Green.

He would be a great practice partner for LMA.:lol

Midnight can't get here soon enough. It would be nice to hear the Spurs called someone other than digging in the international bargain bin.

Not expecting a splash of any kind but something than what we've heard thus far.

Exactly what I expected from the very beginning. Out of topic for me as a spur fan but I liked OKC this past season. Its an interesting team that has developed around him and Russ. The argument could be made that if Russ leaves next season, they could get someone else to play alongside KD anyways. Maybe even improve.

It'd be an awful decision for him to leave OKC. You don't leave a contender. One title in OKC will feel better than 4 with GSW.
Agreed. As a strict fan of basketball, not spurfan, he should stay. Think of Nowitzki, just the one championship but I bet he would not change that for anything.

We are not inking any deals until after Durant decides. There really isn't anyone we want, and any upgrades will have to come from trading Diaw/Mills etc.

Windhorst and Zach Lowe had a podcast today, both mentioned that the Spurs are probably a long shot for Durant, but that there will be a long list of suitors for Danny Green if they have to trade him(many teams are going to be waiting on the sidelines, rather than spending money, and waiting for castoffs from teams shedding salary for the bigger names like Durant)..
Maybe if they strike, Spurs move to the bargain bin hunt too.

Concern starting to grow in Dallas that Dirk might actually leave. Since he is simpatico with taking less money, would he consider joining (from Dallas perspective) the darkside in SA, where taking less than your worth is the norm?

Where did you see/hear this? Dirk leaving Dallas would be like Duncan leaving the Spurs - I couldn't imagine either scenario. Wade on the other hand, I find it hard to believe but not impossible to envision him in another uniform.

A few interesting names:

Cleanthony Early: A lot of spurstalkers were bummed when the Spurs drafted Kyle instead of him. Can the Spurs help him find his game? I never saw him play in the NBA the past couple of years. Was he that bad?

Bryce Cotton: Small but explosive. Like Patty 1.5

Ian Clark/James McAdoo: Those are two Warriors being cleared to make a run at KD, right? Didn't Clark have some bright spots this season?
The only one of those I like is Ian Clark.
Bryce is a tiny gunner like Patty but without his hustle.
Early? Scrub.
McAdoo is similar to LJC in size, athleticism and lack of an offensive game. He would be redundant with LJC. Here's a nice writeup on McAdoo: http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2016/6/28/12047902/nba-free-agency-2016-golden-state-warriors-season-review-james-michael-mcadoo

A power forward by trade, McAdoo actually lined up as a center slightly more often this season, per basketball-reference (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/mcadoja01.html) (47% to 45%). The Warriors (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/golden-state-warriors) rarely deploy 'two-towers' lineups (those featuring any combination of Bogut, Anderson Varejao (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/21848/anderson-varejao), Festus Ezeli (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/157921/festus-ezeli) orMarreese Speights (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/35093/marreese-speights)), so when McAdoo manned the anchor position, he did it without seven-foot backup. One theory: he's being groomed to be Draymond Green's (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/157923/draymond-green) defensive backup. McAdoo is much taller than Green, but features plus-mobility for his size, a gigantic 7'2" wingspan, a strong vertical leap, and he's wide enough to hold his own at a muscular 230 pounds. Today, McAdoo is one of just two Warriors who even have the potential to defend power forwards and switch onto guards -- and that makes his continued defensive improvement vital.
Offensively, he hasn't shown much, yet. He takes around 90% of his field goal attempts within 3-feet for his career, and looks like a power forward whenever he's dribbling the ball. A three-point shot is far too much to ask, right now. The Warriors would likely settle for a more assertive rebounder (McAdoo was the worst forward or center rebounder on the team by defensive rebounding percentage -- and that group includes Andre Iguodala (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/21587/andre-iguodala), Brandon Rush (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/35075/brandon-rush) and Harrison Barnes).
But it's tough to get too critical (or too excited) about McAdoo's truncated season. He played just 262 minutes across 41 regular season games, and often found his way on to the court when the game was already decided.

I'm assuming this is where the 90% statement came from. Seems like KD told them if they get Horford its a wrap. OKC will be able to move Kanter pretty easily and expect it done around midnight. It'll boil down to Horford taking less or resigning 5yr Max in Atlana

When Bazemore came into the league with the Golden State Warriors, he was seen as a combo guard. After DeMarre Carroll's departure, the Hawks asked him to start at small forward. He thrived in that role, improved his jump shot and battled bigger players. No longer just a raw athlete, Bazemore is one of the best role players around and he still has upside as a playmaker. He'll be one of the most sought-after free agents on the market. (More on Bazemore (http://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/once-clinging-to-an-nba-job-hawks-kent-bazemore-is-about-to-get-paid/).)

Once seen as a bust because he was selected second overall in the 2005 draft, Williams found his niche after leaving Atlanta and becoming a stretch 4. In Charlotte, he had a career season at the best possible time, shooting 40 percent from deep while rebounding and blocking shots better than ever before. Williams is not regarded as an elite athlete, but he's capable of switching onto quick guards andthrowing down a huge dunk (http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-basketball/25538964/watch-marvin-williams-dunks-on-carl-landry-hornets-lose-minds) every once in a while. His playmaking skills aren't on the level of Draymond Green, but he plays a similar role and almost never turns the ball over.

From an offensive standpoint this would be good for them, but wouldn't they be giving up a good defense and rebounds with Kanter? Isn't Horford a bad defender and not really that great of a rebounder?

That's why they were so solid down low with the Adams/Kanter combo

Horford is a much more balanced player than Kanter. Kanter is a liability on defense, despite the height advantage that he'd have over Horford. I REALLY hope that they aren't able to land Horford, because it will certainly make our road back to the top that much more difficult.

They replace Ibaka but lose Kanter. That pretty much negates their size advantage. No one should be scared of Horford dominating the glass. And their bench bigs look as shaky as the Spurs' guys last year. If Boban is going to be a rotation player, he's going to eat well. And they are also losing Roberson in the SL. So now Durant almost HAS to guard Leonard primarily. That combined with the fact that Oladipo is going to have quite the adjustment going from chucker to fourth banana means I'm not worried yet. And they're likely going to have to cut Ilyasova to make the numbers work, so there really isn't even a chance of having a random big go off from three anymore.

If Presti pulls this off, GM of the year. Not only that, but at least on paper OKC would be the favorites to win it all (especially if they get any sort of get vet tag along).

Westbrook/Roberson/Durant/Adams/Horford to start

Payne/Dipo/Sabonis/Ersan + whomever else they sign on bench is a tremendous team. Bench is a question marks, but having a young and decently talented 6th man in Dipo helps that.

I don't think it changes much vs. the Spurs, as I said earlier, but I like the move vs. other teams..IIRC, Kanter got benched in the Warriors series, Donovan had no confidence playing him..

OKC wasn't as good as they appeared to be in the playoffs IMO, they received a ton of breaks(2 game-changing calls vs. the Spurs, Roberson having literally the best stretch of shooting in his NBA career, Curry playing on 1 leg, etc), I don't think they could have won a title with their previous roster..

They needed to make high-risk/high-reward moves like getting Oladipo as another creator IMO..I wouldn't replace Roberson in the SL, though, I'd go with Oladipo in the Waiters role..

I think they got worse if they don't get somebody like Horford to help their D, though..Adams isn't a rim-protector, nor is he a special defender..

Agreed. I think Horford is better than Ibaka overall (even though Ibaka killed SA) and in order to do that they basically had to trade Kanter/Waiters for Ersan/Dipo which is worst case close enough and best case much better if Dipo develops more.

If OKC does have to cut Ersan in addition to trading Kanter, then I agree - that puts them on shakier ground.

The SL will still be damn good and end of games they will have options with Roberson or Dipo playing with WB/KD/Horford/Adams, but that bench will have holes.

However, having one pretty talented 6th man can make up for a lot of that. Having Ersan on the bench would be really big, but that's the risk OKC is taking. Horford upgrades over Ibaka and they risk that Dipo can bring more overall than Kanter to the team.

Nathan89

Horford makes them much better vs GSW. Any of the small-forwards can guard Ibaka. Hell Ibaka can be guarded by Klay and Curry. So it will make switches significantly more difficult. Also playing Draymond at the 5 becomes significantly less favorable for GSW. OKC will have a big lineup and a small lineup to matchup with them.

Waiters sucks and having 2 good series doesn't change that. He went right back to the mean vs GS. He had a terrible regular season this year and because of 10 games people think he's special. Playoffs have that effect though.

If the Spurs get Gasol, they're going to ram the ball down the Thunders' throats. As of right now, they are relying on Sabonis to be their third big with probably a healthy dose of Durant at the four. I wouldn't be surprised it the Ibaka trade is what encouraged the Spurs to keep Diaw. KD at PF against the Spurs' second unit is death for the Thunder.

I'd go as far as to say that OKC is weaker if they move Kanter and Ilyasova to get Horford. I think they'll be a more consistently good team, and I think Gasol would be better managed having a solid defender in Horford. But I also think they're very exploitable, and they are relying on young guys stepping up, which isn't a given. If GS makes any large roster sacrifice to match OKC, I do think the Spurs have an obvious window if they can keep their roster together.

Horford is one of the most underperforming bigs in recent history, check his stats. The strength they had against the Spurs will be gone which was crashing the boards and rim protecting. As much crap as Kanter gets for his defense, he's actually a good post defender. Oladipo will take shots away from Russ and Kevin, unlike Waiters who killed us as a spot up shooter. Like Chinook said, Ersan will have to be moved.

Presti might pull off another robbery for Kanter + Ilyasova, but as the roster stands.. They don't match up well against us IMO

It sounds as if I'm in the minority here, but I'm fairly confident we're right in the Championship mix with a few minor tweaks. Is it just me - or did most of the people here forget that the Spurs won more games last season than they had ever won before? Combine that with the fact that it took more than a third of the season for Aldridge to adjust to his role on the team. If not for an injury to Aldridge's shooting hand and horrendous officiating, it's not out of the realm of possibility to say that we could have advanced and pushed the Warriors in the WCF - and perhaps made it to the NBA Finals.

I realize that I may be a bit naive and perhaps a tad overly optimistic, but one would surmise that the Spurs had barely made the playoffs and were on the verge of being a lottery team if they were just going by the posts of most of people here. I refuse to believe that the sky is falling if Durant does not sign in SA (which was a long shot in the first place).
Definitely a lot of doomsaying in here. I am with you. I tend to think we were one roleplayer away from making out of there. Just too many guys not showing up, most of them, save one, proven veterans, so it was unfortunate. We strengthen up even one of those spots and we make it out.

For real Woj? Clippers?

Kevin Pelton sounds more realistic

Clippers: Bad long-term play
Of the six teams that have reportedly set up meetings with Durant, only the Clippers don't have a path to sign him outright using cap space. The Clippers would need to work a sign-and-trade to bring Durant to Los Angeles, and my projections have them sending Oklahoma (http://abcnews.go.com/topics/news/oklahoma.htm) native Blake Griffin (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/3989/blake-griffin) to the Thunder in return.
Because the Clippers would be giving up one of their stars, their 2016-17 projection doesn't call for huge improvement: about 62 wins, which would be a franchise record but would have been good for only third in the West in 2015-16.
Alas, 62 wins looks like the high-water mark. Acquiring Durant and re-signing Chris Paul (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/2779/chris-paul) when he can opt out of his contract next summer would exhaust the Clippers' cap space and lock them into an aging core with few avenues for improvement. The star power on the roster and the allure of L.A. would surely help the Clippers sign ring-chasing free agents, but those players would also likely be in their 30s, making it difficult to build sustainable success.
As a result, my projections suggest the Clippers dipping to 56 wins in 2017-18 and dropping to 52 wins the following season -- one fewer than they actually won in 2015-16.

Like TD21 said, they didn't just pull these cap numbers out of thin air. There's a reason why the cap went up - league revenue is higher than it's ever been. Where do they play? Spurs are loaded at wing as it is. It's their most loaded position. Why use assets to keep stock-piling?

They usually only go 5-6 deep at the wing.

Kawhi/Green -- Manu (maybe) /Simmons/Anderson/Bertans/LJC (combo more of a PF)/ Murray (combo more of a PG). That's 7-8 guys on the roster who can play the SF or SG, even though LJC is a PF/Murray a PG first.

The Spurs should have (and perhaps they still will) concentrate on trades not free agents - if only they can be less Spursy in their loyalties. There is much greater value in acquiring an existing contract (especially one that still has 3 years remaining) than in overpaying a free agent. The Durant meeting is a head scratcher. There is much greater value in acquiring an existing contract (especially one that still has 3 years remaining) than in overpaying a free agent. The Durant meeting is a head scratcher. Perhaps both sides are going through the motions because each earns a little cache from being on the other's list.

1. Who says the Spurs didn't try to make a trade for the past month? Just because a trade doesn't happen, doesn't mean the Spurs didn't try. I don't get why fans can't understand this. The past 2 weeks on Twitter, you hear fans complain that Spurs aren't doing anything -- when in reality I'm sure R.C and the FO took and made several calls to try to make a deal happen.

I know, roster spots are a problem. You just see some guys that could make tremendous trade bait next year, if nothing else. I keep thinking that the crazy spending at the top end is going to make for some real bargains at the bottom, if you can pick the gems.

If you're talking about guys padding stats on bad teams - Ennis has shown that he can knock down 3's. That translates anywhere, if he can keep it up. A couple of seasons ago, he shot something like .450 from the 3, and those last games in NO he shot almost .500. Imagine if Chip can help him be consistent, and do it for a whole season.

But, yeah... roster spots.

Like TD21 said, they didn't just pull these cap numbers out of thin air. There's a reason why the cap went up - league revenue is higher than it's ever been. It's not like teams are being forced to pay guys more without making more money themselves. Have you seen some of these TV deals? These teams are making an absolute shit ton of money.

Well sure the revenue is going up, but the leap in the cap will lead to some very expensive blunders that have the potential of creating a whole class of bad teams that are burdened by very bad contracts.

If the rumor is true, Chandler Parsons will be getting something like 22% of the cap. That's the equivalent of about 15.5M last season. It's looking like Bazemore may get the equivalent of around $14-14.5M, in last year's money? Were those two guys worth that much last season? Maybe you think so - I don't.

I'm sure they are. That doesn't by default mean every contract handed out is good or paying the right amount. The players have to fit, perform well as starters and make it that many years (or at least play good enough for you to trade them if you need to without giving up assets to do so).

What we don't know is if these contracts have team options which would change things some.

That would be a great contract for Philly to offer give Barnes age, the number of years it will take to develop Philly picks, and the fact that they have to spend money. They can either waste money on players that will be in their 30's by the time the 76ers are ready or spend it on Barnes who will be in his prime by the time a max contract ends. At which time he can resign on a contract that reflects his actual worth.

Like M4T was saying though, everyone knows the cap is jumping again next year. So these GM's are looking at what these contracts will be with regards to % of the cap next year, not this upcoming one. It's subtle, and doesn't mean these contracts are good, but it's important to remember that.

It's 25% of this year's cap but that's no biggie since they have a ton of money. Next year when the cap jumps that % will shrink.

But I hate Parson's and he's never proven to be worth any max, any time despite getting it twice (his team's hate him after and let him go).
