Who do you guys think leads the team in tackles and what will his game average be?
My pick is Ossai getting 7 tackles per game.

And Princely is a DT if not a 4tech. I think UT just did a better job of convincing him that there’s still a path to the nfl that way and he’s not going to succeed as an edge rusher in college station.
I've always looked at the 3-technique DT in a 4-3 defense & a DE in a 3-4 defense as almost interchangeable. So it doesn't really matter imo.

Right but Roach was saying that a&m was telling Princely that he could be a DE in their 4-3 (4, 5, 7 techs). I think UT just did a good enough job convincing him that he was a 4i if not an interior guy. Either way, he’s not a DE. In a 3-4 he can at best be a 4i but to me that still isn’t an end bc he’s still inside the tackle. A&M would have eventually moved him inside imo.

A&m told Bobby Brown the same thing and now he's an interior DL. The same will happen with Leal.

Hornscast Podcast recruiting notes:
(Honestly this episode kind of sucked. I think Roach is struggling without EJ. It didn’t help that Howe didn’t stay on topic and kept talking about the team/current players during the recruiting segment. I think it’s because the class is almost complete and we’re about to see recruiting slow way down, at least for the ‘20 class.)
Airdate: 8/13/19
Hosts: Mike Roach & Jeff Howe (recruiting segment)
Link: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/longhorn-blitz/id1279981104#episodeGuid=ac90e038-be3c-11e9-8c59-175c42006a8f (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/longhorn-blitz/id1279981104#episodeGuid=ac90e038-be3c-11e9-8c59-175c42006a8f)
Recruiting starts at 50min mark of the podcast (roughly 35min of recruiting content).
Princely Umanmielen:
Had issues with 3 man front. A&M was selling him on being Myles Garrett. UT sold him on path to nfl being at the 4 tech like Malcolm Roach.
Ethan Pouncey:
8 Int w/ 3 returned for TDs in junior year. Auburn was thought to lead when he committed. Great ball skills. May have best junior film in class. Really good kid like his brother. Tall and range-y.
Jerrin Thompson:
4.61 40yd, 4.2 shuttle. Texas could have probably had him earlier but wanted to evaluate more.
Linebacker recruiting:
Brennon Scott was told by staff they didn’t have room. He was seen as b-backer. UT should be done at linebacker with just Dorbah. We took 5 guys (assuming De’Gabriel Floyd returns) last year. (I still think we need more guys at the second level to help the elite d-line talent we’re bring in to stop the run game. I don’t feel like you can play football well with a bunch of 200lb safeties playing in the box on top of your d-line. I know it’s a passing league in the big 12 but OU will run the ball up your ass if you’re hoping to stop them with safeties. Not at all saying the staff doesn’t know what they’re doing, I’m just saying I’m not overly confident that we should be done recruiting run stopping linebackers bc the only guy we’ve signed, Dorbah, isn’t a run stopper.
DL Notes:
Alfred Collins or bust. Nobody outside of a Bryan Bresee type will be taken.
OL Notes:
Done at o-line barring any 5-stars wanting in.
WR Notes:
Quentin Johnston is considered the prize on UTs board. Javian Hester leaning UT and staff would prob take his commitment at this point. (There were no LV Bunkley-Shelton updates. No updates on Johnny Wilson.)
‘20 class odds/ends:
Roach said Ty Jordan, Q. Johnston, Collins, Hester, Eaton, Alford, and Bunkley-Shelton should be the end of the class (22 commits assuming we land all 7 of those kids. This would put us at 287.22 points. Top 5-7 ranked class.) Roach said he wants people to understand that the staff knows what they’re doing. Fans shouldn’t get down next year when things are slow/quiet. What’s happening now (the momentum we’re seeing) was the plan all along. Staff wanted to go hard in July/Aug to give themselves time to evaluate and complete the class before the season started so they can focus on football rather than recruiting. 2-3 new commitments by this time next week. Kids are starting to believe in Herman and what he’s doing. Expect this kind of recruiting success and the same evaluation tactics/time period the next few years. Staff isn’t really worried about A&M/Jimbo, they’re going to get the majority of these kids in head to head battles with A&M.
Edit: I’m not a professional note-taker and I’m most definitely not an insider. I try to ensure that I’m not putting words in the mouths of the analysts. Blast away if you think I missed the gist of what was said.

well, bobby brown is a beast of a human being at the moment so he has to be a DL. leal has the frame to really bulk up so i can see how he would potentially get big enough for the move to the interior, but he is also freakishly athletic so he has many of the traits you would want from an edge rusher. the times i saw him play, he was just dominant wherever the coaches put him, although he was a little easier to game plan when he was a DL. it will be interesting to see how he develops, physically speaking.

Hard to say because I don't recall this happening under Herman.
Fortunately it doesn't sound like anything violent, but he wasn't legally carrying.
My guess is at least a one game suspension, but Herman may have a specific punishment for breaking the "no gun" rule (assuming the weapon was a gun).

4th & 5 Podcast:
(Recruiting segment starts around the 43min mark. Cliff notes. Again, not an insider and don’t know anything that anybody else couldn’t find out with a little more time on their hands. Kind of a short recruiting segment but our class is almost complete and there isn’t a lot of movement on ‘21 guys as of late just bc the season is getting so close. The guys have repeated that they expect recruiting to slow down soon.)

‘21 TE commitment Lake McRee tore his ACL/meniscus. Out for year.
Jerrin Thompson:
Started pushing in July for his commitment. Tenacious player. Great fit for nickel. ND wanted him really bad. Great tackler. Loose hips and powerful. High ceiling.
Princely Umanmielen:
Commitment was unexpected. Was leaning UT but wasn’t expected to do it so soon. Is a kid that enjoys the recruiting process. Giles was able to get him despite a&m telling him that he was comparable to Myles Garrett at DE in a 4-3 scheme and sending Twitter graphics out saying as much. (I know there are some good ags on our board but that graphic was almost as funny as the “volleyball spike to jimbos face” rumor.) High ceiling. Needs a lot of work with being too handsy, standing up at snap, being more explosive on every snap for such a good athlete. Sweetest part of commitment was how Giles had Price spinning his wheels.
Quentin Johnston:
6’11” high jump, 4.5(flat) 40yd. He has ridiculous hang time. Good receiver but elite athlete. Will take some work to get his route running improved to college level but the high ranking is warranted. Texas/TCU final 2. Not as good as Demas but testing numbers are comparable.
Xavion Alford:
Great instincts. Ball hawk. Highly sought by Bama, LSU, and a&m. (This is one of those head to heads that actually matters in my opinion. Princely was fun just bc aggy wanted him so bad. Princely was a good get but not vital to the class.) Naivar has done a great job with this recruitment. Not 100% with this recruitment but UT wouldn’t trade their position with anyone else.
Rando notes:
Get ready for recruiting to be extremely fun if we have another season like last year. ‘20 class ended up looking great after looking kind of bleak in June. Recruiting run right now will slow down but not before we land a few more in the next week or so.

thanks, slick. i don't harbor any ill will towards the horns. i mean, you won't ever see any burnt orange on me but i did go to grad school at UT so i have an affinity for the university. and i will always root for the local kids to succeed there. that's why it's so disheartening to read that sterns is having lingering knee issues. he never had any knee or ankle issues at steele and was really an ironman considering his workload was pretty heavy (returning punts, defense and playing receiver at times). i hope he's back on the field sooner rather than later. i really enjoy watching him play.

Which is why this season really matters. These recruits can flip.
Jimbo has the Aggies playing solid football. It’s a much more even effort throughout the game and the Aggies don’t give up now. But the schedule, it’s so tough. Even with a mediocre record, the Aggies play these games tough they could turn heads and minds. Our expectations are skyhigh. We have to show well record wise. So this can become very interesting.

yeah, this is the best team since the one that went 11-2, only with a better coach-and they still could wind up with five losses. i don't know if tfloss has the information, but that LSU game for the horns will be a real show for the recruits that make it to that game . it could be something that makes up or even changes minds (if UT wins, added to that georgia win, it will be huge!). as to the ags, their game against bama is going to be played in front of several key recruits; it could be very important from a recruiting standpoint.

Did new Rivals Rankings just come out? Because they have Bijan as the #1 RB nationally now. I thought he was lower last time I check but I don't remember and don't check often.

Quentin Johnston, Eaton, Collins, LV Bunkley Shelton, Javian Hester, and Ty Jordan. There’s always going to be Ringo until he actually commits to UGA. Johnnie Wilson is still supposedly visiting for LSU game.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A Texas Longhorns football player is facing a weapons charge after an incident in early July where he was arrested for carrying a loaded gun without a license.
Sophomore wide receiver Joshua Moore is charged with a misdemeanor.
Police say they first saw Moore through the city’s comprehensive downtown camera system, called HALO.
According to an arrest affidavit, police monitoring downtown Austin on July 5 at the police department’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) noticed a man “remove a firearm from his waistband, walk in between two vehicles, appearing to chamber a round by pulling the slide of the gun to the rear, and then place the firearm back into his waistband.”
Police officers found and arrested Moore at gunpoint, saying he matched the description of the suspect.
When officers searched Moore they found a Glock 19 – 9mm pistol in his waistband.
“The pistol contained a 30 round magazine with a live round which was loaded into the chamber ready to be fired,” police wrote.
Moore did not have a license for the gun. He was taken into custody but was later released after paying a $6,000 bond. He has a court date scheduled for August 22.
Longhorn coach Tom Herman released this statement on Moore’s arrest:
https://www.kxan.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/40/2019/08/AP_18259126325247.jpg?w=900Texas wide receiver Joshua Moore (AP Photo/Eric Gay)
“We’re aware of the situation with Joshua Moore. We have talked with him and his family and are handling this internally at this time, but will continue to monitor the legal process. We will determine any further action upon the completion of that process.”
Moore played in the first six games of his freshman season before a shoulder injury. He caught seven passes for 53 yards, scoring his only touchdown against USC.
Despite his arrest, Moore has been participating in preseason practices with the Longhorns

Quotes from Alford:
"I'm obviously close with a lot of guys in Austin that I've been knowing before I was even recruited by Texas and they are always telling me how it is there," Alford told Rivals. "Every time I go there, I have fun. I'm looking for a good experience in football and lifestyle. Texas is coming up. They had a 10-win season and won the best bowl game in style. They beat an elite SEC team and Coach (Tom) Herman is doing a good job."
"Texas is coming back and the defense is coming back," he added.
"They have been consistent all the way through my process," Alford explained. "Ever since they offered me, they've been consistent. They were definitely the most consistent school. Sometimes, I'd go days or weeks without texting them, but they never gave up on me. They sent me facts and told me to have a great day daily, which showed how dedicated they are and how much they needed. That, and the depth chart shaped up for me to play almost as soon as I walk on campus."
"Texas was always in the mix and of all the schools, Texas recruited me hardest throughout the process," Alford said. "As soon as they offered, Coach (Craig) Naivar and Coach Herman have been on me ... There were times I didn't text Coach Naivar back and he never gave up texting me, asking me to call him or texting my mom or uncle. He never gave up and they showed me they really wanted me and needed me, and every time I go up there they make it a clear fact I'm really wanted in Austin."

Love the chart, it really shows a lot great information.
1. we lose 5 seniors and there really isn't much of a chance to lose any juniors to the NFL.
2. Baring injuries we should be bringing back 8 starters next year.
3. I love the fact that there is only 1 true freshmen in the two deep. I hate relying on freshmen for big playing time. Freshmen get you beat.
4. We have had some great defensive backfields, 2005 and 1983 both come to mind. But I have never seen a more stacked defensive backfield. Not counting freshmen just of the guys I've seen playing. we have 5 guys that should be drafted and 2 others that are now starting over some of those 5. What does that tell you about our defensive backs.
5. By the end of this year, this defense is going to be salty, the front 7 will take their licks, to start the year, but they are going to be darn good by season's end.

So, does this mean Caden Sterns is not projected to play at all? I thought they said he would be ready for LATech? Or does this just represent what was out there this week? Its confusing because it mentions "projection".
NM, I'm tracking on what they're saying, but dont call it a "projection" which implies day 1 starter. If healthy, we all know Ingram and Sterns are "projected" starters.

Maybe Jaxon Smith-Njigba from Rockwall.
But with Texas' momentum right now, there's no telling who it might be.
I only just realized how highly Smith-Njigba is ranked. It would make sense since it was IT that mentioned him as a possibility, IIRC. Smith-Njigba and Bunkley-Shelton would make for one hell of a WR class with Johnson. Also two of the better names out there. I really, really hope Bunkley-Shelton ends up in this class.

Somethings in the water in Austin. I’ve been following recruiting since ‘03 and I can’t remember a time in that 16 years where we’ve been as hot as we are right now. This is wild.

The Ohio St board had a conniption fit losing Bijan. It will be quite entertaining if Texas flips JS-N.

Also, OrangeBloods confirmed today that he is speaking with the Texas coaches and is going to decide soon if he'll take a visit to Austin.

sure wouldn't say "pulling everybody," but it was some fun, true. That said, he often waited way too long to put the foot on the gas, so we were usually fortunate to crack the top ten in the recruiting rankings when all was said and done.
Under Herman, so far we're in or near top three to five territory, and there's a far better sense of systemic plan compared to Strong.

IT recruiting cliffs:
Running back(1 remaining spot)
Ty Jordan:
UT leads. Nahlin puts his confidence in landing him at 85%
Wide receiver: (3 remaining spots)
LV Bunkley-Shelton:
Saying all the right things regarding UT. Confidence 65%
Javian Hester:
Not 6’3-6’4 as reported at regional opening. Closer to 6’2. Developmental X-receiver. Closer the Marcus Washington than C. Johnson. Possible early season decision. Confidence 75%
-Johnny Wilson:
Has said he’ll still OV to UT but kinda depends on the year Collin Johnson has. Confidence 30%
-Jaxon Smith-Njigba:
Probably a slot guy but can only any of the WR positions. Confidence 40%
Defensive Line (1 remaining spot)
-Alfred Collins:
“Might” commit before season. Confidence 85%
Linebacker(1-2 remaining spots)
Josh White:
UT making up ground on his mom who originally wanted him at LSU. Will probably visit Austin for the LSU game. Confidence 40%
Defensive Back(2 remaining spots)
Latham Ransom:
Gotta get him on campus. Maybe LSU game. Confidence 40%
Jahari Rogers:
Surprised that we’re going after Eaton bc Rogers is probably “flippable.” Might be betting on Eaton’s upside. (I think it has more to do with keeping Alford.) Confidence 30%
Josh Eaton:
Uncommon size and speed. Not a safety. Uncertainty on why he’s pushed his commitment date back 3 times. Confidence 80% *conservatively

I'll add to the Inside Texas piece that they used 40% for guys they feel Texas doesn't currently have the lead for, but that they'll potentially make a huge jump with.
WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, LB Josh White and S Lathan Ransom.
Vito Corleone

I'm still surprised Ransom picked tOSU. It's a good football school that puts DBs in the NFL, but Texas does all that and still offers a better environment for non-football like, a world class education and it's much closer to home. If all you saw was football, then tOSU makes sense, but there is more to life than football.
