Hell yes. I love that Judson schedules tough non district games. It helps them come district and playoffs.
Rocket Pride 93.....Hey Hey
desoto has some issue at this time so that could be a winnable game for judson. the biggest question mark will be at QB. on a side note, i saw that chandler received an offer to lamar (where he would likely be converted to a WR).
Reagan, Johnson, and Madison should dominate that league.
couple of thoughts on the realignment. 27A will be crazy with smithson valley, wagner, judson, clemens and steele battling for four spots. steele could even jump to D1 depending on who would make it. clemens will be D1 no matter what. also, westlake and lake travis will be move out of region 4 creating some interesting match-ups down the road. feel terrible for south san-they just became the doormat of 27A. also, the valley can't be too happy as they will now have to face northside SA schools in the 2nd round.

District 26 6A is the dominate district in region 4. All roads to the semi will go through that district.

Per The Football Brainiacs, the new DTs coach has been hired.
He will be announced after Signing Day and he's from the Big 10.

LT is definitely division 1 and westlake depends on who else gets in (bowie, austin?)-they could go D1 or D2. I had misread on LT and WL being out of region 4 but the brackets do shape up differently this year. judson and LT going at it early will be nice. the changes to district 25 are interesting as well.

Interesting. I really thought it was going to be Partridge from Pittsburgh.
It means it's either:
Illinois - Al Davis (highly doubtful, he was hired two weeks ago)
Indiana - Mark Hagen (he's Co-DC so I guess he's doubtful as well)
Iowa - Jay Niemann (he's assistant DL coach and recruiting coordinator - spend 2016-18 as DC and LB coach at Rutgers) or Kelvin Bell
Maryland - Delbert Cowsette
Michigan - Shaun Nua
Michigan State - Ron Burton (someone I really, really like)
Minnesota - Chad Wilt (joined in January, so not very likely either)
Nebraska - Tony Tuoiti
Northwestern - Marty Long
Ohio State - Larry Johnson
Penn State - Sean Spencer (just went to the New York Giants)
Purdue - Terrance Jamison (signed in January)
Rutgers - Jim Panagos (just signed with Rutgers)
Wisconsin - Inoke Breckterfield
Inside Texas mentioned a few days ago (when they found out who the DT coach was going to be), that he was a guy that previously coached in the region. Based on my brief examination of the DL coaches in the Big Ten, Tuoiti at Nebraska and Hagen at from Indiana spend a couple of years at A&M seems to fit that the most.

Depending on how things are going with CB Ennis Rakestraw, don't be surprised if we see mention of CB Edric Whitley of Pflugerville Weiss tonight or tomorrow morning.
Texas kicked the tires there a few weeks ago, but ultimately chose to focus elsewhere.

Is one of the sites saying this or do you think this is something that could occur? Seems like it'd be a hard last second pull if the kid has never visited/OV to us.

unless this kid is a late-bloomer like Ennis, seems like a pretty suspect last-second grab based on his college offers anyway (does have two legit P5 ones per 247, but pretty lame stuff beyond that).
Rakestraw sounds likely 'Bama bound, as apparently Saban has decided he wants him and we purportedly waited too long. Hard to be able to afford to do that considering the season we had.

Just throwing it out there as a possibility like what happened with LB Jaylan Ford.
To my knowledge, Ford didn't visit UT until after he signed so it's not completely unheard of.

Losing Princely to Baylor as it appears to be is not really that big of a deal, IMO. The real prize of this class are the (3) kids that we have signed or will sign on the DL anyways. I'm not real sure what everyone else is thinking about him, but that's what my eyes are telling me.

Princely could be a bigger loss than expected. I wasn't very high on him when we were running a 3-4 defense. However in a 4 down linemen set he becomes exponentially more effective and a much better fit for us. Has he gotten better, no, but his usefulness is greater in our new defensive scheme.

Wow. I saw a few of the recruitniks mention WR Destyn Pazon as one of the fastest high school players in the country, I'm pretty sure someone said he probably was the fastest, but Leary seems to be on a completely different level speed wise than anyone he plays against. I noticed he played against St. Thomas Aquinas and Armwood, so he's playing some really good teams.
Speed seems to be a priority for 2021. Pazon, Leary, JoJo Earle, Teddy Knox and Mario Williams all seems to be guys with legit speed.

Going to a 4 man front our dline should look something like this.
SDE - Alfred Collins - I honestly think he is going to be a day 1 starter, he has a very unique skill set we don't have on the team.
DT - Keondre Coburn - right now he is the best dlinemen on the team
DT - Ta'quon Graham - Too slow for DE, but uber athletic for a DT with great size
WDE - Joseph Ossai - He could be the next Brian Orakpo for Texas
Sweat, Broughton, and Ojomo will all get playing time at DT to create a very nice rotation. We are hurting at DE, we recruited DEs for a 3 man front and they are just not the right body type and ability for a 4 man front. Marcus Bimage is a good fit, but outside of him.
I will be watching 4 guys this spring to see where they are: Daniel Carson, Rob Cummins, Myron Warren, and Peter Mpagi. I'm hoping for 1 or two contributors, but I fear we might have 4 busts. All these guys were recruited to play DE in a 3 man front.
Going into the next recruiting cycle, we need to really recruit athletes for both DE and Linebacker, we are in dire need of athletes at those positions.

I think this is why we did a good thing by recruiting athletic safeties. These guys can grow into spots as LBs or even DEs. Ideally we would recruit more positionally but getting a top 10 class after the turnover is crazy. In our conference the speed is gonna help. They have to be grooming Overshown to move to LB.
We are not a top team and will not have superior depth like Bama, Clemson, LSU, Ohio St.
With our shortcomings in performance it’s an impossible task. Next to maybe Tennessee, we have got to be the best recruiting non performing team.
Rob Cummins is no longer with the team. He medically retired.

Foregone conclusion, but still nice to see. Great class with a lot of needs filled. Thanks for all your hard work TFloss and here's to hopefully putting these up and down years in the past and getting some consistent success.
I'd say it was a strong likelihood; in recruiting, especially the challenges we've faced this year and for NSD2, not a lot is a foregone conclusion.
I realize you're probably just expressing the general sentiment, but I personally looked at his signing as a significant victory. I wasn't going in really assuming strongly that it would be us (even if optimistic), so as a result i was stoked.

This could have been a train wreck of a class given all the turnover.
Wont get away with this again Tom.
I agree; that said, considering all (turnover you mentioned, the disappointing season, etc), it was pretty darn successful. Finished in the 247 composite top ten despite having several less signees than any other team in that group, and also came in #5 in per-player average, even beating Ohio State there.
Very solid job considering, but i agree that Herman has very, very little room for significant errors in his Texas tenure. I still think he has the ability to win huge at Texas. Just less hyper-optimistic about that as I was prior to this year's season.

That has some exciting potential if Briles sticks around.
Arkansas needs something positive in the worst way.
as someone who grew up with Arkansas as our biggest rival, it's been really weird to see how horrible they've been the last years. Never would have imagined it, really.

Baylor with 6 at combine and TCU with 7. Basically whole LSU team at combine. Interestingly, ousux only has 4.
Bama has 10. Auburn 9.
We could have a staff of Knute Rockne and Vince Lombardi and they won’t win big with 4 upperclassmen who are big time pro prospects.
Key is recruiting at top 5 level every year. Might need to have some beneficial conference realignment for that to happen consistently. Join Big 10, Pac12? Steal couple big state schools to strengthen big 12?
We never were very good as long as we were in SWC because negative recruiting against weak conference. We broke out when big 12 put together. Hard times came when big state schools left - colo, husker, aggy, mizzou. Not that they are world beaters but conf stronger then.

Really turned out being an odd class or a lot of tough breaks anyway you look at it. Bru issue goes without saying. Whittington our for season, Floyd retiring, the health scare with Derrian Brown, Peter Mpagi has ongoing heart issues not sure if he retired as well, Javonne transferring out, Caleb Johnson transferring out. At the end of the damn thats a lot of bodies dropping that didn’t turn out. Hope we have better luck with ‘20 and ‘21 classes!

Sweat, Owens, Roshon Johnson and Jake Smith are all very positive contributors and guys we will be depending on next year. Whittington will be back. I'm expecting big things from K Watson, C Adamora, J Wiley, and M Washington. Still a lot of guys that are in the system developing.

He's the son of Kansas City Chiefs RB coach Deland McCullough and grandson of former NFL coach Sherman Smith (spend 22 years in the NFL as an RB coach for the Oilers/Titans, Redskins and Seahawks).
Deland McCullough spend a few years in the NFL and CFL and Smith spend close to a decade in the NFL as a player. Good bloodlines.

We always want great blockers, but we need mucho pass rushers. We never recruited for the 4 man front we don't have a true pass rusher except for Ossai. We need more like him. We are also in need of elite corners and receivers. I'm hoping we can get a couple more elite linebackers.

I really think this guy is going to be an all conference player for us. Good size, crazy speed for a linebacker. It's like we recruited a 5'star linebacker and he just showed up. Oh, and lets not forget he hits like a ton of bricks.
This news made my day. All the moves I was hoping the staff would make, they have actually done it.
Move to a 4 man front
Spin down Ossai to DE
Spin down Overshown to LB
Move Whittington to WR full time
Keep Roshon at RB
Now we can actually run a 4-3-4 defense without having to worry about a team going 4 wide set in a hurry up offense and us having to get cramps to substitute. Our base defense is going to be very flexible.
As long as we can stay healthy, we are going to be a tough team to beat.
I have one last request from Herman, quit trying to run the toughest 2-a-day camp in college football. You can get your team ready to play without killing them.

Teach him how to get off blocks without a running start and he should be effective.
I am excited about this one. I think he is one of those kids who can see things happening before they do.
But playing up and having an offensive lineman immediately on you is a step up from a safety who has the ability to see and react because they are further back and unblocked by fat guys. Man if he could be like that poor kid from Ohio St. who was a small linebacker for the Steelers... the one that got severely injured.
I would rather see Whittington given another shot at RB because I thought he was the best in his short time.
I guess the best to hope for is he comes back as quick as he was and injury free. I really, really liked this kid.

Don't you mean a 4-2-5 defense? In this day & age where everyone runs some type of spread offense, the 4-3 is basically a sub personnel package.

Don't you mean a 4-2-5 defense? In this day & age where everyone runs some type of spread offense, the 4-3 is basically a sub personnel package.
If Overshown is now a linebacker a 4-3 is still basically a 4-2. It's all about where they line him up, as a 4-3 he is closer to the LOS in a base alignment that doesn't tip the offense what the defense is going to do while still having a guy that can drop into coverage. They can move him around before the snap into a 5th Db position and lose nothing. This isn't new, in 2005 we did the same thing with Drew Kelson, he was a linebacker that we used to cover TEs, RBs, and slot guys.
Pgardn mentioned something extremely important. there is going to be a learning curve for Overshown. The ability to play linebacker and knowing how to play linebacker are two very different things. How to read the offense, find the football, and taking on blocks are things he has never done before. Most linebackers have played the position for years starting in the 7th grade. They pride themselves on being linebackers because it's a hard nose position. It's one thing to know how to tackle, but it's something different to take on a linemen and still make the tackle. This isn't to say it can't be done, U of Miami was the pioneer of spinning down safeties into linebackers back when they were the football power.
Bimage, J. Jones, Vaughns, and possibly Warren will also help with pass rushing at DE. Bimage was disruptive in the Tech game when they finally lined him up a few times outside of the OT. Jones was a top pass rusher in JUCO. I can see Warren stepping up and working into the rotation as well.
pgardn
02-10-2020, 12:11 PM
I like Overshown as a side to side guy as an LB. If he can read a wide play or see a bounce outside that all the big 12 teams carry an appropriate RB for it would be great. These kinds of plays can lead to big losses. But we might not get to see as many blowup tackles with him seeing a lane from off the LOS and becoming a heat seeking missile. I just would like to see some drag down leg tackles for 8 yard losses because he can get there.
Its pie or 3.14... in the sky right now. We can dream in the off-season.
