So when you factor in age and money which would you rather have Ian or Pau?

While Pau Gasol would be a nice get, who would you rather have Pau or Ian?

Ian is exactly the type of center we need defensively. He's mobile, athletic, can play the pnr and is not broken offense. He's not too old so you can build a core with him.

As for Pau, he's offensively very gifted and can pass and can guard the post etc but can you even play him in the fourth quarter against golden state or Cleveland?

Right now I would take ian at the same price which I'm guessing would be 10-14 million per. Al's signing gives me hope one of those two can be had for 10. Gonna need some cap to sign bertans or borrousis.

Anyways who you got Pau or Ian?

Spurs have to try and improve this year - they are a damn good team that needs youth & athleticism (amongst other things). But it is a fine balance.

Can't blow it for next year for no reason. Only do that if you truly believe you get someone that elevates your chances. On the flip side, while everyone is looking at "value" you can't just sign anyone. You need to improve and also have to find guys who can play, not ones who will just come cheaply.

But if you are going to err, you have to do it cheap youth..

Keepin' it real

Even at 36, Pau is enticing, but I'd prefer Ian with this defensive skills, and then the Spurs could blow the rest of their load on Dirk and call it an offseason!

Ian all day.

Ian guards everywhere on the floor.

Spurs need some offense however from the 5 if they aren't getting an upgrade at PG. It's tough. Spurs defense would still be damn good with Ian and he can finish better than current Tim, but that would be 2 spots again (PG/C) that really can't score with no upgrades on the bench either at guard.

Tough, but may be what we deal with this year until SA can do more next year or swing a trade mid-season.

I mean, at best, we are looking at 14M in cap space? More likely 10M. That is not enough to bring in Ian or Pau + other players.

Spurs have to sign Boban, likely Ginobili, Bertans....this is rough.

I don't think the offense is a big deal. Ian would score more than Duncan has been. And would have better against OKC.

Pau's scoring would be offset by his terrible defense. And diva demands for touches.

Imagine Ian on pick and roll defense instead of Duncan ... Spurs defense is even fiercer. Teams will be strangled.

I agree the defense would be stacked, but to me it's all net gain/loss. I think the defense was amazing last year and Gasol while not better than Tim at post defense does OK in that regard so I don't know if the defense would take a big step back. The offense, to me, would have the chance to step way forward though.

I wouldn't be mad at Ian at all. He's not "young" but younger than Gasol and you can fill other needs (scoring) next year easier than getting a good defensive C probably too. I see the appeal, but I do think SA needs offense more too. Especially at guard with TP/Manu/DG all limited scorers now and DG role not to "score".

Lowe is citing that all things considered, ORL signed him for less than his max which in this environment with Turner getting 70M & other teams willing to pay, that is a win.

That is where value makes sense, although the context is hard. Fournier is a good player and young enough and you have to look at % of the cap for him and with that in mind, deal makes pretty good sense even though the raw dollar amount is high.

I'm not even going to bother judging the money. In terms of fit, Turner gets them one step closer to poor man's Warriors . . .

- He can function as their Livingston, in that he can play point guard (offensively; he can't defend it), with Lillard/McCollum off ball. Given their gravity, they should be able to get good mileage out of myriad off ball actions.

- If they keep Leonard (provides enough stretch to keep the lane open), he can also function as their Green, in terms of being the screen setter in the pick and roll, when their guards are being trapped and picking teams apart 4 on 3.

Ian is exactly what I didn't want. The offense simply can't function without another player that can dribble. We have two complete non dribblers in lma and green. If we can get solid deal though it's worth acquiring a useful role player now before the cap goes up even more next year. A stud pg becomes essential with our existing roster though. Obviously that won't happen this year but maybe next year we can make a run at cp3. We will still be very competitive this year but we have very little chance at a ring. Locking up a solid role player for years to come is important though and Ian would do just that.

Woah. That's all well and good except Turner is way worse than Livingston and Leonard way worse than Green. They got worse as of now IMO. If they don't sign a good big man, I think they miss out on the playoffs possibly. Only saving grace is Mavs may have dropped out of the playoffs and other than UTA, no one beneath them improved.

People overreact to every name the Spurs are rumored to have "expressed interest" in. It's called due diligence. They can't just express interest in one or two names because there's no certainty with how things will turn out and if they can't get option one or two and didn't reach out to other names early while others did, it'll only make it more difficult to get them at that point.

I said poor man's version and I didn't compare the players in terms of level, but similarity and how they'll be utilized. Leonard would function as Barnes, with Aminu as Iguodala, in that scenario/lineup.

Livingston can't shoot threes and is a fine fit. Turner won't primarily spot up, he'll essentially be the backup point guard (on offense).

I'm not a fan or saying I'd have signed him, but I see the fit.

Terrance Jones is still out there, and will probably get $15 mil a year. There's also teams like Dallas that exist and will probably throw big money at someone like Jones.

If it's not Pau, TJ is my hope. Should definitely cost less than 15M with his concerns. I'd say Mirza level money (3/30) at best IMO.

He's young enough, fits enough and has upside while not killing next year's cap space.

:lol I don't know. But it's basically the same team with the same holes as last year (which, I'm not complaining I've been on the SA is not too far bandwagon all off season) but replace Tim with Pau or Ian.

Not sure if that improves SA enough, but both players *should* be better than current Tim on the court.

Then you replace Butler/Bonner/Martin/West with LJC, Bertans (hopefully), maybe Boban is back, Murray. And hopefully have Manu back along with Mills who's still there.

Yup only way Spurs get a big name is if KD or Pau said yes. Then they would make the moves to make that happen (with Pau, maybe their 10M would get it done, but not sure).

But as long as they get some younger-ish guys who have some bounce and upside (hopefully) that will help. SL is in good shape with LMA/DG/KL, it was the bench that needed help and versatility.

But man, SA badly needs another 6th man level guard.

Really depends on the market. With the way centers have been going, I'd try to S&T Boban if Bourousis can be had for less than the MLE. The Spurs actually have leverage, since matching a deal for Boban still gives a cheaper APY than any other contract I've seen a center sign so far. But if they can't get a legit replacement and don't find a starter for their cap space, I'd go under the cap and give him anything under $30M/4.

Well seeing as how much cap space the Spurs have and the amount of some of these contracts being handed out to a player like Solomon Hill, it's not looking at that great unless players like Bobo and Mills are traded. After a 2nd round exit, it's easy to forget that the Spurs won 67 games, but hopefully that isn't lost on LaMarcus. He was also playing with an injury that was apparently worse than he let on (considering he recently said it is still bothering him).

Spurs don't need to throw out the playbook. They just need to either get better production or replace the guys that shit the bed against OKC (namely Mills, Ginobili, Diaw, West, and sadly...Duncan), and they will be right there contending again.

I am. (Though location seems to be as big a factor for him as winning and Dallas and Houston don't seem like better Texas options). I'm more worried that without Duncan's positive influence that the occasionally diva-ish, malcontent side of LMA may show. Winning cures a lot of ills, but we're unlikely to win 67 next year. So, I could see some difficulties ahead...

Pop is smart to include him in the group to get Durant which emphasizes he's not only a player but part of the new inner circle.

He's also likely to opt out of that deal early to get paid again under the new cap.

Not only yeah, but hell yeah. And they aren't going to be putting any big pieces around him this offseason. You guys are starting to see the pinch I was talking about, and why I thought taking a year to re-build. Free up a shitload of cap space, to bring in a top-tier FA, and manufacture a 40-win season to score a lottery pick.

Making the playoffs isn't enough. Aldridge didn't come here for second round (or first round) bounces. I was talking about a quick, controlled re-build. The Spurs need to pull a rabbit out of the hat, or they are going to be forced into a real, and much more ugly re-build. Right now I'm down to hoping for them finding a few over-achievers from the D-League or Europe.

But, yeah, they damned well better put some pieces in to be serious contenders, or they'll never get any big name players to come. The worst thing they could do is be a 50-win team for the next couple of seasons. Either find a way to be better than that, or commit a year to re-build and get the pain over with.

If SA doesn't get a few surprises this year from who they bring in and SA underwhelms in the playoffs again, it puts a ton of pressure on the next off season to impress. LMA/Kawhi/DG is a win-now core (even though Kawhi is young) so they have limited time.

ORL got rid of Dipo, Ersan & Sabonis. Brought in Ibaka, Green, Meeks, etc..

Apparently, Kawhi Leonard has a personal matter and won't be attending the meeting. What could be more important than meeting with a generational talent like KD and trying to convince him to join the team? Unless, of course, that generational talent plays your position.

"system players" need not attend.

The birth of his child? Not sure if that is the case or not.

:lol Yeah, I thought of that but, there's no reason to hide it unless you're not the father. I just find it very puzzling that your best player would rather attend to a personal matter rather than help convince one of the five best players in the game to join your team. My definition of a personal matter is one in which the player doesn't want to disclose publicly. A birth of his child doesn't fit that description..

Thanks. As you mentioned in the other thread, I'd be really worried about Dallas driving up the price or poaching him outright. How serious are the rumors about Bourousis or even Lorbek? Or bringing Milutinov over? Lorbek at least will get a workout, I think.
Lorbek is in that SL/Utah list and Cady, for what it's worth. At least Cady is entitled to the QO.

Horford and Dwight are obviously different players, BUT, IF (and my God this is such a big if) Dwight has a buy-in attitude and really plays defense/rebounds, they can be just as good overall (maybe offense steps back some) and not be on the hook for such a long deal.

But man, I would probably rather pay Horford. Although if ATL doesn't feel like they can add pieces to what they have done, then they had to gamble on something different I guess.

Good deal for Cleveland. Bad look for Miami giving all their money to Whiteside while cheapskating their franchise player.

Gonna be weird seeing Wade in another uniform, but not surprised considering he will be back with Lebron.

Not bad at all but honestly that is an atrocious shooting lineup for OKC imo...aside from Durant who isn't even necessarily an elite 3 point shooter, no one in the starting lineup has a good stroke from distance.
