Hundreds of VA officials fired for misconduct since Trump's inauguration


The Department of Veterans Affairs announced today that more than 500 officials have been fired for misconduct since President Trump took office earlier this year, according to data posted online.

In an effort for more transparency and accountability within the VA, Secretary of Veterans Affairs David J. Shulkin announced that a public list of employee "accountability actions" will be posted online and updated weekly.

The list outlines a total of 747 disciplinary actions including 526 employees who were fired since January 20. The actions affected a myriad of positons ranging from a tractor operator to VA attorneys.The list does not include employee names due to privacy reasons but does note the employee's position and VA region.

"Veterans and taxpayers have a right to know what we're doing to hold our employees accountable and make our personnel actions transparent," Secretary Shulkin said in a statement.

This announcement comes less than a month after President Trump signed the Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act which strengthened the ability of Secretary Shulkin to discipline VA officials. President Trump said that previous laws "…kept the government from holding those who failed our veterans accountable."

In addition to publishing the list of accountability actions, Shulkin said in a press release that he is requiring approval by a senior official of any monetary settlement with an employee over the amount of $5,000.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars praised this new VA decision and said the organization is "…very, very hopeful that the Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act will continue to heal the VA, which will definitely help restore the faith of veterans in their VA."

A Democratic state lawmaker in Maine appears to have made a death threat against President Trump.

“Trump is a half term president, at most, especially if I ever get within 10 feet of that pussy,” Rep. Scott Hamann wrote in a lengthy Facebook tirade on Tuesday.

Hamann, who represents a district in South Portland and also works as project manager for a food bank, appears to have been responding to another Facebook user who expressed support for Trump.

Hamann accused Trump of being “anti-American,” and an “admitted rapist” who was “installed by the Russians.”

The chair of the Maine Republican Party responded to the post by calling on Maine’s House speaker to “do something” about Hammon’s remarks.

“Words cannot even begin to describe the level of revulsion I feel after reading Representative Scott Hamann’s recent tirade that has come to light,” Demi Kouzounas said in a statement.

“Perhaps the most alarming aspect of this tirade is an implied death threat against our President when Rep. Hamann states, ‘As long as that’s what’s coming out of that side, then I’ll match you dumb f**ks word for word. Trump is a half term President, at most, especially if I ever get within 10 feet of that p**sy,” she said.

She called on Maine House speaker Sara Gideon to “do something” about Hannon’s remarks, which she called “unhinged and dangerous.”

Hammon did not respond to phone and email requests for comment.

A phone call placed to the food bank where he works, Good Shepherd Food Bank, was not answered. But the group commented on the matter on Facebook.

“The views and opinions expressed by this employee are his own, and in no way reflect the views of Good Shepherd Food Bank. Our only goal is helping to end hunger in Maine, and we have addressed this with the employee,” reads a post on the organization’s Facebook page.

The meat shipped last week by a South Omaha meatpacker was reported to be the first shipment of U.S. beef to China since 2003 after officials sealed a long-sought trade deal this month.

“This is a big deal. It’s definitely very positive news,” said Lee Schulz, an Iowa State University Extension livestock economist.

But Schulz cautioned overcoming the political hurdles that had prevented U.S. beef exports to China over fears associated with mad cow disease are only the first step. It will be some time before American beef becomes “it’s what’s for dinner” for nearly 1.4 billion Chinese.

He described the Chinese market for U.S. beef as “in its infancy” in terms of its impact on Iowa and U.S. producers and processors.

The market today is “very different” from 2003, according to Chris Freland, executive director of the Iowa Beef Industry Council. Still, what she saw while visiting China earlier this year makes her believe U.S. beef producers have “an exciting opportunity” to move into the Chinese market.

“There are a lot of people there … and a rising middle class who can add beef to their diet,” she said.

China is projected to become the largest beef market in the world and a major destination for U.S. beef products, according to American Farm Bureau Federation economist Katelyn McCullock. Adding to the market potential is China’s changing taste, McCullock said.

In 2003, much of the market there was offal — tongues, kidneys and livers, for example. Today, there has been demand for higher-value “muscle cuts” or steak.

Before China closed the door on U.S. beef, it imported $70 million worth of beef annually, with the United States supplying 80 percent of that. Today, China imports about $2.6 billion worth of beef every year. Last year, Chinese beef imports totaled 601,000 tons and demand is expected to increase ninefold in four years.

“So if we can even have a portion of that coming back for Iowa producers, that’s a celebration for producer profitability,” Freland said.

Even if Iowa beef is not going to China, the reopening of the market there still is good news for the nearly 20,000 Iowa farms with beef cattle, Schulz said.

“The fact that we’re exporting is important for the demand situation,” he said. “Beef goes to the highest value market, and if Kansas beef goes to China, then someone has to fill the need.”

Iowa’s cattle industry contributed $6.9 billion in business activity to the state economy in 2015, according to the Beef Council. With retail beef prices in decline recently, any increase in demand would be welcome, Freland said.

“Supply and demand is the way our industry works,” she said.

China has other suppliers, though. Australia and Uruguay filled the void created when China banned U.S. beef. And Schulz said the competition won’t willingly cede the market to American farmers and ranchers.

“Anytime you regain market access, it takes time to build trade and have a noticeable impact,” Schulz said.

On the upside, he said, U.S. beef is “a very credible brand worldwide and is very desirable on the world market.”

Schulz predicted re-entry into the Chinese market is unlikely to have much short-term impact on retail beef prices here.

Jeff Sessions: 400 medical professionals charged in largest health care fraud takedown


WASHINGTON – Federal authorities announced charges Thursday against 412 physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other medical professionals, in what Attorney General Jeff Sessions called the largest health care fraud enforcement operation in U.S. history.
Sessions said the suspects accounted for more than $1.3 billion in fraudulent transactions across more than 20 states, and at least 120 people were charged for their alleged roles in overprescribing and distributing opioids, making it also the largest-ever opioid-related fraud takedown.
Of the 412 charged in the year-long operation, 56 were physicians.
"Too many trusted medical professionals...have chosen to violate their oaths and put greed ahead of their patients,'' Sessions said. "Amazingly, some have made their practices into multi-million dollar criminal enterprises.''

A doctor at a Houston clinic is accused of writing 12,000 prescriptions for opioids, enough for more than 2 million illegal doses.
The enforcement effort comes as the country continues to battle a fatal epidemic of prescription drug abuse, much of it involving opioids. Abuse of the expensive painkillers often lead addicts to cheaper and often-lethal alternatives: heroin and fentanyl.
Last year, an estimated 59,000 people in the U.S. died from drug overdoses, many of them linked to opioid abuse, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Casualties are on pace this year to exceed 60,000, Sessions said.
Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe said the overall enforcement operation involved 29 bureau field offices around the country and more than 300 agents.
"The nation is in the midst of a crisis," McCabe said. "Opioid abuse destroys lives."
McCabe said singled out the doctors, pharmacists and nurses as having violated the personal trust of their patients and clients who depended on them for their well-being.
"These people,'' McCabe said, "inflicted a special kind of damage.''
He said investigators found opioid addicts "packed in standing room-only waiting rooms" at doctors' offices waiting for their prescription painkillers.
"Some doctors were writing more prescriptions than entire hospitals," McCabe said.
In one case, a group of six Michigan doctors allegedly operated a scheme to provide patients with unnecessary opioid prescriptions and later billed Medicare for $164 million in false claims. Some of the those prescribed painkillers, authorities said, were resold on the street to addicts.
South Florida produced the largest number of suspects – 77 – who were charged with a combined $141 million in false billings for home health care, mental health services and pharmacy fraud.
Nearly half of those false billings were submitted by the operator of a Florida addiction treatment center who recruited addicts to relocate to south Florida so the operator could bill insurance companies treatment that was never rendered. In return for their cooperation, the addicts were allegedly offered gift cards, airline travel, trips to casinos, strip club outings and drugs.
A total of 32 suspects were charged in Michigan for their alleged roles in money laundering and "drug diversion schemes'' involving about $218 million, according to federal authorities.
