Exclusive: Trump aides' bid to plug leaks fuels government paranoia - sources

http://s4.reutersmedia.net/resources/r/?m=02&d=20170303&t=2&i=1174785398&w=&fh=&fw=&ll=780&pl=468&sq=&r=LYNXMPED220MT Spicer! :lol :lol

Steven Mnuchin used his first senior staff meeting last month to tell his new aides he would not tolerate leaks to the news media,

access to a classified computer system at the White House has been tightened by political appointees to prevent professional staffers from seeing memos being prepared for the new president.

some officials told Reuters they fear a witch hunt is under way for the leaker of a draft intelligence report which found little evidence that citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries covered by Trump's now-suspended travel ban pose a threat to the United States.

paranoia among Washington career civil servants who say it appears designed to try to limit the flow of information inside and outside government

some employees fear their phone calls and emails may be monitored and that they are reluctant to speak their minds during internal discussions.

limits imposed on the flow of information have blindsided cabinet-level officials on some major issues and led to uncertainty among foreign governments about U.S. policy.

Mnuchin's first meeting with senior Treasury staff said he told them that their telephone calls and emails could be monitored to prevent leaks. One of the sources said that staff were told that monitoring could become policy.

it is rare to learn about an administration's internal efforts to impose message discipline.

At the State Department, the fear of getting caught in a leak investigation or running afoul of White House positions is so acute that some officials will discuss issues only face-to-face rather than use phones, email, texts or other messaging applications,

"There is a climate of intimidation, not just about talking to reporters, but also about communicating with colleagues,"

There also is high anxiety in parts of DHS, officials there said.

"The atmosphere has become toxic, and that is not conducive to the work,"

If he doesn't put those jobs in there he does not deserve a 2nd termPERIOD

Agreed.

I would point out his policies, the "economic nationalist" ones will fuck over his voters, pretty hard. I almost hope he gets all the things he wants, because that will finally put to rest the myth that Republicans are good for business.

Things Trump wants that I think are good ideas:
Tax reform
Reduction in regulation.

Not sure the dumpster fire required for that is worth it, though.

He faced ISIS and promised to kill their families.

"I would knock the hell out of ISIS... [and] when you get these terrorists, you have to take out their families," the Republican presidential candidate said on Fox & Friends.

One has to wonder if it was done on purpose.

ISIS will certainly say so, and they have Donald Trumps own words to make their case for new recruits.

trump has also been briefed on his investments in turkey and the several llc's he's opened in saudi arabia

The Post reported that by the time of Trump's May financial filing, four of those companies in which Trump was the president or director were still active. Trump has in the past said he wants to protect the oil-rich Arab kingdom.During a rally on August 21, the day Trump created four of those companies, he said he gets along well with Saudi Arabia.

"They buy apartments from me," Trump said during the Alabama rally. "They spend $40 million, $50 million. Am I supposed to dislike them? I like them very much.”

White House installs political aides at Cabinet agencies to be Trump’s eyes and ears

The political appointee charged with keeping watch over Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt and his aides has offered unsolicited advice so often that after just four weeks on the job, Pruitt has shut him out of many staff meetings, according to two senior administration officials.

At the Pentagon, they’re privately calling the former Marine officer and fighter pilot who’s supposed to keep his eye on Defense Secretary Jim Mattis “the commissar,” according to a high-ranking defense official with knowledge of the situation. It’s a reference to Soviet-era Communist Party officials who were assigned to military units to ensure their commanders remained loyal.

Most members of President Trump’s Cabinet do not yet have leadership teams in place or even nominees for top deputies. But they do have an influential coterie of senior aides installed by the White House who are charged — above all — with monitoring the secretaries’loyalty, according to eight officials in and outside the administration.

This shadow government of political appointees with the title of senior White House adviser is embedded at every Cabinet agency, with offices in or just outside the secretary’s suite.

The White House has installed at least 16 of the advisers at departments including Energy and Health and Human Services and at some smaller agencies such as NASA,

Donald Trump and White House staffers claimed Trump was having a weekend full of meetings at their not-racist-at-all “Southern White House”—better known as Mar-A-Lago, Donald Trump’s cash cow private club.

On Saturday, the White House noted he was headed to meetings at another private club, the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

It would be his 10th time at a Trump-branded golf course in only 8 (long, long) weeks as president. (https://twitter.com/BraddJaffy/status/843102936339243008)

Probably a total coincidence he only plays at clubs he owns, right?

Anyway, the White House staff insisted he was there for meetings and calls.

One Beneficiary of GOP’s Tax Bill: President Trump

The big tax cut moving through Congress as part of a health bill could potentially save the president millions

potentially saving him millions of dollars in taxes on his rental income next year and even more money on other income if he wins a second term.

Mr. Trump’s decision to continue owning his businesses without running them means that he is no longer considered a real-estate professional for tax purposes. That increases the tax’s effect on him and enhances his benefit from the proposed repeal, which would take effect in 2018, according to accountants and tax lawyers.

“In terms of his rental income, he would have been largely unaffected by repeal” if he were still a private citizen, said Tony Nitti, an accountant at Withum Smith & Brown. “There’s no just practical way he can qualify as a real-estate professional now that he’s president of the United States.”

The repeal of the 3.8% tax—known as the net investment income tax—is the largest tax cut contained in the House Republican health-care bill (https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-earners-would-pay-less-tax-under-gop-health-care-proposal-1488882602). It would reduce federal revenue by $157.6 billion over a decade, with most of that boost flowing to the top 1% of households.

A Bombshell Lawsuit Accuses Trump Of Lying And Illegally Hiding His Personal Debts

By Jason Easley (http://www.politicususa.com/author/jasoneasley-2-2-2-2-2-2) on Sun, Mar 19th, 2017 at 4:27 pm
President Trump is being sued for lying to the public by hiding his personal debts in violation of government rules on his personal disclosure form.

http://15130-presscdn-0-89.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/trump-lawsuit-debt.jpg

In simple terms, The Ethics In Government Act requires public disclosure of the personal financial liabilities of presidential and vice presidential candidates.

By not providing a public disclosure of his financial liabilities, Donald Trump broke the law.

The plaintiff in the case doesn’t want money.

He wants the court to order Donald Trump to make public a full disclosure of his debts.

Since Trump refuses to comply with law, attorney Jeffrey Lovitky wants the court to order the president to make the information public

DONALD TRUMP PLANS TO ELIMINATE LEGAL AID FUNDING THAT SUPPORTS SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE (https://theintercept.com/2017/03/20/donald-trump-plans-to-eliminate-legal-aid-funding-that-supports-survivors-of-domestic-violence/)

the federal funding that supports Legal Services of Eastern Missouri and a network of other legal aid groups across the country would disappear.

That’s because the proposed budget eliminates the 43-year-old Legal Services Corporation, the federal entity that provides millions for state-based legal aid operations.

Cutting its funding would deny millions of poor people access to the civil justice system, a circumstance that would disproportionately impact women, who make up 70 percent of clients served by LSC funds.

Indeed, fully one-third of cases handled by LSC-affiliated groups involve women

Cutting a program that provides for the safety of domestic violence survivors — among many others — seems an odd way to achieve greatness.

Donald Trump Is Filling Top Pentagon and Homeland Security Positions With Defense Contractors (https://theintercept.com/2017/03/21/revolving-door-military/)

Two Department of Homeland Security appointments Trump announced Tuesday morning (https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2017/03/21/president-donald-j-trump-announces-key-administration-posts) are perfect examples.

Benjamin Cassidy, installed by Trump as assistant secretary for legislative affairs, previously worked as a senior executive at Boeing’s international business sector, marketing Boeing military products abroad (http://cepa.org/sites/default/files/documents/CEPA%20Forum%20Agenda-1.2014.pdf).

Jonathan Rath Hoffman, named assistant secretary for public affairs, previously worked as a consultant to the Chertoff Group, the sprawling homeland security consulting firm founded by former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff.

The firm has come under fire (https://theintercept.com/2015/05/27/tsa-body-scanner-lobbyist-takes-congressional-job-overseeing-spending-tsa-security/) for advising a variety of firms seeking government contracts, including for full-body scanners deemed invasive by privacy activists.

Hoffman also led a state chapter (https://theintercept.com/2015/05/22/americans-peace-prosperity-security-south-carolina/) of a neoconservative military-contractor advocacy organization during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Neither position requires Senate confirmation.

If President Trump announces that North Korea launched a missile that landed within 100 miles of Hawaii, would most Americans believe him?

Would the rest of the world?

We’re not sure, which speaks to the damage that Mr. Trump is doing to his Presidency with his seemingly endless stream of exaggerations, evidence-free accusations, implausible denials and other falsehoods.

The latest example is Mr. Trump’s refusal to back off his Saturday morning tweet of three weeks ago that he had “found out that [Barack] Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory” on Election Day.

He has offered no evidence for his claim, and a parade of intelligence officials, senior Republicans and Democrats have since said they have seen no such evidence.

Yet the President clings to his assertion like a drunk to an empty gin bottle, rolling out his press spokesman to make more dubious claims.

Trump used two hands to drink a glass of water at his speech to congress.

This has garnered a lot of attention as it is peculiar, making me wonder if he has visual/spatial problems that may be related to aging or onset of dementia.

He appears to have problems walking up or down inclinations and needs to hold guard rails when managing stairs.

As well he demonstrates a number of other possible symptoms of dementia, such as paranoia, difficulty sleeping and difficulties with memory.

His health is obviously not great as he is obese, he is not physical active, is chronically sleep deprived, and at seventy is considered elderly, all of which make him a prime candidate for physical and mental decline.

I wonder whether the hard date was Ryan's idea or Trump's - probably Ryan who wanted to strong-arm it through - I think Trump would rather deal. I see this all as good - spend the time to fix it right - which includes bringing down price for most - do that and it'll be a win - no matter how long it takes.

TrashRyanCare is a tax cut for the wealthy, not health insurance for the non-wealthy.

It will reduce prices if it gets rid of the 10 essential benefits. IMO, the way to reduce health care price is to comparison shop for all non-catastrophic care. Use insurance only for major/catastrophic things. Shop for routine/maintenance stuff. Post all prices eg. today Quest billed me $232.54 for 25-OH vitamin D-3 test. It's $44 on direct labs.com and I don't even need to leave my house (don't have to go to doc's office) to order it. The ins co and health care field jack up the price, overcharge when billing, under pay the charges, foist the rest on us - and get away with it because we don't know what things truly cost.

I'll just finish the argument because I know you get scared when asked to defend your statements.

DarrinS - Haven't you seen all of the articles about Trump and Russia?

Spurminator - Yes, but those have typically been about possible collusion / cooperation with Russia in the election. Also, while there has been a lot of speculation about that possibility, there is an actual investigation into that effect and actual officials have either resigned, been fired, or had to recuse themselves. So, it's kind of newsworthy whether you believe it's a "narrative" or not.

DarrinS - So why would Trump bomb Assad's air base if he's in cahoots with Putin? Obviously the MSM narrative about the election implies that Trump is now a puppet for Putin to push whatever agenda he wants.

Spurminator - That may be your interpretation of the narrative, and that of some liberals, but show me where the MSM has pushed the idea that Trump would go along with Putin on supporting Assad just because Putin wanted him to win the election.

DarrinS - I've looked and I can't find any.

Spurminator - Exactly. It's perfectly reasonable to believe that Trump (or members of his administration) might have allowed Russia to help the win the election without having to believe that Trump was going to partner with Putin on all subsequent foreign policy decisions.

DarrinS - You're right, Spurminator. I was assuming that the MSM was pushing the idea of ongoing Russia/US collusion because that seems to be what the far left believed was happening, but now that I've looked for actual articles, I realize that assumption was false and foolish. Thank you for challenging my beliefs and forcing me out of my habit of deflecting uncomfortable conversations with snark.

Spurminator - No problem. Isn't learning fun?

Trump just made some very strange comments about Bannon

In a brief exchange with the New York Post's Michael Goodwin on Tuesday, Trump seemed to deliberately place Bannon at arm's length, suggesting his role as an adviser has been oversold and even appearing to threaten Bannon's job.

"I like Steve, but you have to remember he was not involved in my campaign until very late," Trump said.

"I had already beaten all the senators and all the governors, and I didn't know Steve. I'm my own strategist, and it wasn't like I was going to change strategies because I was facing crooked Hillary."

Ouch.

Bannon joined the campaign in August for the lion's share of the general election, taking on the role of campaign CEO. He and Kellyanne Conway, the campaign manager, were the titular heads of the campaign.

Trump then kept Bannon on as his chief political adviser in the White House, serving alongside chief of staff Reince Priebus.

"Steve is a good guy, but I told them to straighten it out or I will," Trump said.

Trump Floats Nonsense Idea of Privatizing Airports and Dams

Donald Trump is considering privatising America’s airports and dams as part of an infrastructure building programme that could exceed past estimates of a trillion dollars....

“America can do much more than it has, and can do what other countries in Europe and Australia have done, by harnessing private capital,” Howard said.

“So it could privatise a number of assets such as airports and dams, and get a lot of capital from that, as well as increase the tax base.”

.Last year the Cato Institute, a conservative thinktank, published a paper that endorsed

privatising the nation’s more than 500 commercial airports, which are currently owned by state and local governments and

rely on the federal government for capital improvements.

The federal government can't privatize airports that are owned by states and cities.

And even if it could, states and cities would get the money. So what's the point?

I'd say Trump had four big domestic priorities when he took office:

Repeal Obamacare.
Cut taxes for the rich.
Spend $1 trillion fixing roads and bridges.
Build a wall.

The Obamacare effort has already crashed and burned.

His tax plan apparently won't work with Obamacare in place, so now he's delaying that to take another run at health care.

He doesn't have anywhere near enough support for his infrastructure plan, which is why he's desperately scanning the horizon for weird ideas to fund it.

And the wall hasn't gone anywhere yet. It may yet make progress, but even

Trump admits it won't cover anything close to the whole border.

On foreign policy,

he's crashed and burned on his immigration plan;

reversed himself on Russia;

launched a strike on Syria with no apparent follow-up plan;

still has no proposal for defeating ISIS;

caved in to China on Taiwan; and

has gone soft on trade.

Trump Reverses Himself On 6 Major Issues In 2 Days

President Donald Trump (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/donald-trump/) has reversed himself on at least six major issues this week, pulling back on long-held promises supported by his base.

Four of these reversals alone came in an interview with The Wall Street Journal (https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-says-dollar-getting-too-strong-wont-label-china-currency-manipulator-1492024312) published Wednesday:

Trump said the Chinese are “not currency manipulators.”? Just last week (https://www.ft.com/content/9ae777ea-17ac-11e7-a53d-df09f373be87), he said they were “world champions” of currency manipulation, and he pledged throughout his campaign to label China a currency manipulator on his first day in office. He tweeted in 2012 (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/257936201057705984) that President Barack Obama’s failure to call China a currency manipulator “helped China steal even more jobs and money from us.”
Trump said, “I do like a low interest-rate policy.” During his campaign, he excoriated the Federal Reserve for keeping rates low, and said in 2011 (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/123783204887998464) that the policy would lead to hyperinflation.
Trump said he was open to the idea of reappointing Janet Yellen to head the Federal Reserve. On the campaign trail, he said he would “most likely (https://www.wsj.com/articles/donald-trump-says-he-would-replace-janet-yellen-supports-low-interest-rates-1462465158)” replace her. “I like her, I respect her,” Trump told the Journal at the time.
Trump said he supported the Export-Import Bank, noting that small companies are “really helped” by the institution. During the campaign, he said the bank was unnecessary.

On each of these issues, Trump’s turnabout puts him in lockstep with the Washington economic policy consensus. And in each case, Trump is walking away ― at least for now ― from the heterodox views he expressed during the campaign.

This week’s reversals follow his shift on Syria (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/nikki-halen-trump-syria-2013_us_58ea39a8e4b00de14104089d) last week, when Trump fired cruise missiles at an airbase after repeatedly saying he opposed U.S. involvement in the country’s civil war.

Also on Wednesday, Trump reversed his position on NATO (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-nato-obsolete_us_58ee8a0ee4b0b9e98489025d?11), telling reporters, “They made a change and now they do fight terrorism. I said it was obsolete. It’s no longer obsolete.”

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/trump-reverses-himself_us_58ee7ffee4b0b9e98488ea64?&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=The%20Morning%20Email%20041317&utm_content=The%20Morning%20Email%20041317+CID_f9b 73202e07a4e3934f7b197e66b4e07&utm_source=Email%20marketing%20software&utm_term=HuffPost&%20Morning%20Email%20041317

Trump is even making Mar-A-Lago unpopular. (http://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/4/12/1652321/-Trump-is-even-making-Mar-A-Lago-unpopular)

It is estimated that it costs the city $60,000 in police and support overtime per day for a Trump visit.

The police chief estimated that Trump’s summit with the Chinese President last weekend cost the city $250,000 all by itself.

The city is hopeful that the government will reimburse them for the expenses, but at least one of the officials is not taking chances. According to the report;

However, the high cost of Trump's visits has led County Commissioner Dave Kerner to propose a tax on the resort to cover the costs.

"We're very honored to have the president here, but at the same time, his travel here is such high frequency he's not visiting Palm Beach County — he's governing from it," Kerner told Money magazine.

"Whatever our priorities are, the taxpayers didn't pay this money to us to protect the president."

Id say I agree with North Korea but definitely not when it comes to Syria and Russia.

He still wont say ANYTHING bad about Russia (only Assad). He's now involved with Syria and is basically in hiding. His base is pissed, he doesnt want to answer questions about Syrian refugees which he now appears to actually care about (or is pretending to for Ivanka's sake).

As usual, he's just winging it. He said he learned after listening to the Chinese president for ten minutes that North Korean problem was more complicated than he realized (which is what he said about health care).

This would be a good strategy for dealing with Trump. Just bore him with details for ten minutes on any issue and he'll give you whatever you want. He has a ridiculously short attention span and he's lazy.

I have no idea how you could come to the conclusion that this president is anything but lazy.

He has no understanding of policy. This is because he's too lazy to actually learn about this stuff and would rather just repeat what he watches on cable news. When pressed (by a fox news host) about his health care plan screwing over the people who voted for him, he didnt appear to know what was actually in his health care plan. Same with his "budget" that cuts meals on wheels etc. He hasnt taken the time to look at what the OMB proposed, thats too much work. On these executive orders, he just signs the shit they put in front of him and says that Obama was bad.

We saw this in the campaign. He was too lazy to prepare for debates against Clinton. He was too lazy to vet the people joining the campaign and thus hired a lot of people with bad Russian connections.

If you need further proof, he ended the push to repeal Obamacare because it was taking too much work. He spent 17 days. To put that in perspective, Obamacare took over a year to pass and he has thus far gone golfing 17 times.

Dude is lazy.

There’s No Point in Trying to Understand Trump

“What on earth is the point of trying to understand him when there is nothing to understand?

Calling him a liar is true enough, but liars have some cognitive grip on reality, and he doesn’t. Liars remember what they have said before.

His brain is a neural Etch A Sketch.

He doesn’t speak, we realize; he emits random noises.

He refuses to take responsibility for anything.

He can accuse his predecessor and Obama’s national security adviser of crimes, and provide no evidence for either.

He has no strategy beyond the next 24 hours, no guiding philosophy, no politics, no consistency at all —

just whatever makes him feel good about himself this second.

He therefore believes whatever bizarre nonfact he can instantly cook up in his addled head, or

whatever the last person who spoke to him said.

He makes Chauncey Gardiner look like Abraham Lincoln.”

Well, that's not what he said. And I wouldn't exactly say Trump's intellectually lazy - obviously, he doesn't learn by print (the way most of us here on any message board do) - maybe more by audio. My brother is like that - every document he gets, he sends me, asks me to read and tell him what it says but he is a great people-person, has a knack for seeing things "out of the box" and definitely is not lazy. Don't think Trump has gotten to the office of President by being lazy - whatever deficiencies he has, he has surrounded himself with others to overcome them.

What is endearing, terrifying and hilarious about Trump is not simply his ignorance, really his militant ignorance, but

his complete lack of self-awareness about his ignorance.

Trump told a reporter for The Wall Street Journal that his understanding of the problem of North Korea changed dramatically after hearing ten minutes of history from the President of China. Needless to say, Trump didn’t need to admit this. But neither was it candor.

So far the Trump Presidency has been a sort of Mr Magoo performance art in which the comically ignorant Trump learns elemental or basic things that virtually everyone in the world of politics or government already knew – things that the majority of adults probably know.

Health Care: “Nobody knew health care could be so complicated.”

North Korea: “I felt pretty strongly that they had tremendous power. But it’s not what you think.”

There are perhaps half a dozen examples equally stark.

In other words, President Trump is open about his discoveries and even eager to share them but

universally projects his previous state of comical ignorance onto the general public or whomever he is talking to.

What is key though is to understand that this is not just ignorance. Ignorance is just the first stage of Trump’s fairly advanced problem.

He is not only ignorant but clearly unaware of his level of ignorance.

This is compounded by a seeming inability to understand that everyone else isn’t equally ignorant to him.

Those of us who are parents know the wonder of discovery experienced by small children. They find out there were things such as dinosaurs or close primate relatives called lemurs. As loving parents we indulge them, sometimes feigning ignorance of things we actually already knew to support a child’s joy in discovery.

But Donald Trump is a 70 year old man. And not a terribly nice man.
His ignorance is not endearing.

We don’t need to lie to him to make him feel good about himself. Still it is good to understand his condition. Ignorance is just lack of information.

But there’s something wrong with Trump’s brain –

maybe cognitive, perhaps simple entitlement or just broad spectrum derp –

which appears to make it genuinely impossible not to project his own ignorance onto everybody else.

Looks like cucker-in-chief Muslim-Ban-non is being cucked

Ivanka Trump is engineering Steve Bannon’s White House downfall

Bannon has reportedly been finding himself increasingly isolated and overruled in the Oval Office. According to the Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/15/us/politics/jared-kushner-ivanka-trump-white-house.html), the president’s daughter has been making a case for Bannon’s removal to her father “in the strongest terms.”

Bannon has made his contempt for the “globalist,” “cuck” wing of “West Wing Democrats” (http://www.rawstory.com/2017/04/furious-steve-bannon-regularly-rails-against-jared-kushner-for-being-a-globalist-cuck-report/) led by Kushner abundantly clear. This week, speculation has abounded as to whether Bannon, if forced out, would take vengeance (http://www.rawstory.com/2017/04/watch-ex-breitbart-executive-warns-that-if-kushner-forces-out-bannon-it-will-be-open-warfare-on-trump/) against the Trump administration.
“Ms. Trump has never been close to Mr. Bannon, although she appreciated the ferocity of his work. She puts him in the category of colorful, rough-hewed characters her father collects, with the likes of Roger Stone, a longtime Trump operative,”

“Mr. Trump would prefer the situation with Mr. Bannon to stabilize, according to people familiar with his thinking, and to keep Mr. Bannon on board, albeit in a more circumscribed role, than see him become a populist critic outside the gates,”
