US regulators were ordered by a Trump Administration political appointee to stop investigating suspected insider trading relating to Donald Trump's March 23 announcement that he wouldn't bomb Iranian power plants. The move is said to be "unheard of".

15 minutes before Trump posted an announcement of his decision on Truth Social, an unusually large volume of trading in a two-minute window commencing 6:49 a.m. New York time saw more than $2 billion being bet on falling oil prices and rising stocks.

Trump's announcement caused the price of Brent crude to fall as much as 14%, and US and European stocks jumped roughly 4%. It's likely that the traders made a substantial profit, possibly several tens of millions of dollars.

Bloomberg reports that forensic analysts at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) flagged the trading and filed a referral to the enforcement division, which decides whether to open a full investigation.

However, sources say that Mel Gunewardena, a senior adviser to Trump-appointed CFTC chairman Michael Selig, then told a supervisor to retract the referral. He then built his own team to re-analyse the data independently of the career analysts, who resigned or were reassigned.

A former CFTC enforcement director says that such an intervention would have been unheard of under previous administrations. Since Trump returned to office, 20% of CFTC staff have been cut, and enforcement actions have fallen by 86% since 2023.

The Gunewardena-led CFTC investigation is said to be still ongoing alongside a parallel one in the Justice Department. No outcome has been announced yet in either.

More broadly, there has been little reported progress in tackling suspected insider trading, other than the arrest of a soldier in the Maduro case and the CFTC ordering Trump's former teleprompter operator, Gabriel Perez, to return money gained from insider trading.

The Trump administration’s economic policies have driven up taxes and costs for all but the wealthiest 1% of Americans, according to a new analysis from an economic think tank.


A typical American consumer, someone in the middle 20% by income, will pay about $1,700 more in taxes and other costs in 2026 because of Trump’s policies, the report found. The poorest 20% will pay about $750 more.

A US judge has ordered President Donald Trump to answer questions under oath in his defamation lawsuit against the BBC by 11 December.

Trump is suing the BBC over an episode of Panorama that edited together two different sections of a speech he gave before the riot at the US Capitol in 2021.

Charles Tobin, a lawyer representing the BBC, said in court that "we still haven't been able to depose the plaintiff" with two months left in the discovery period, during which both sides are legally required to exchange information with each other on their case.

Trump cancelled a previous deposition on 16 October, citing "matters of national importance" while he was campaigning in Georgia.

In US law, a deposition is an out-of-court statement made under oath in response to questions, which is recorded for use in later proceedings.

The judge in the case, US Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett, said that Trump must sit for the deposition by 11 December, unless the discovery period is extended.

Last week, attorneys asked that Lett compel Trump to face deposition after the last scheduled meeting did not take place.

On that day, Trump attended a midterms campaign rally in Dalton, Georgia and a fundraiser at his property in Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

In a separate filing on Wednesday, Trump's lawyers said that the president could appear for the interview between 11 and 22 January next year, and claimed that the BBC was "wrong to claim that President Trump is avoiding his deposition in this action."

Trump's lawsuit - filed in Florida - accuses the BBC of "intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring" the speech he gave outside the Capitol on 6 January 2021.

The BBC apologised for the error and said that the broadcast gave "the mistaken impression that President Trump made a direct call for violent action".
