“No,” Barry said she told the president.

“Why not?” he said.

“I don’t watch much television at all,” Barry said she responded.

“What do you do?” the president asked.

Trump is leading Republicans to an unwanted record in the popular vote

If President Donald Trump, in fact, loses the popular vote in 2020,

it will be the first time since the founding of the Democratic Party in 1828 that either the Democratic or Republican Party has lost the popular vote this many times in a span of eight elections.

A loss by Trump this year would mean the

Republicans have lost the popular vote 7 out of the last 8 elections since 1992.

There is, has been UnPresidented swamp monster corruption

Trump SWAMP MONSTER’s former lobbying clients — and donors —

get a long list of favors from his agency as recusal pledge expires

Wheeler spent years as an energy lobbyist (https://www.salon.com/2019/09/19/drain-the-swamp-trump-has-named-more-lobbyists-to-cabinet-than-bush-or-obama-did-in-8-years/) at the law firm Faegre Baker Daniels, where he represented companies like the coal giant Murray Energy, whose owner Robert Murray is a major Trump donor (https://www.salon.com/2018/01/10/trumps-presents-to-coal-country-are-from-a-coal-magnates-wish-list/).

Wheeler signed a pledge (https://apps.washingtonpost.com/g/documents/national/epa-acting-administrator-andrew-wheelers-recusal-letter/3134/) in May 2018 to recuse himself from matters related to former clients after he replaced embattled former EPA administrator Scott Pruitt (https://www.salon.com/2018/07/18/scott-pruitt-may-be-gone-but-the-epas-pro-pollution-agenda-remains-intact/).

But the two-year pledge expired earlier this year and he has been

repeatedly accused of violating the agreement (https://www.citizensforethics.org/press-release/wheeler-ethics-complaint/) by approving rules that he lobbied for as a lobbyist for Murray Energy and others.

“Andrew Wheeler is overseeing policies that damage the air we breathe and water we drink while his associates benefit,”

“This is a clear abuse of his taxpayer-funded position and ethics agreement.”

WSJ Poll: Swing Voters Like Trump

ducks
08-23-2020, 12:10 PM
Voters who consider themselves "in play" for the 2020 presidential election give President Donald Trump a 10-point edge in those that hold a "positive" view of the president vs. those who have a "positive" view of Joe Biden, according to The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.

"These voters as a group have characteristics that suggest they are open to Mr. Trump and his party," the Journal reported Sunday. "Some 22% have a positive image of Mr. Trump, while only 11% have a positive image of Mr. Biden, the July poll found.

"They prefer a candidate who will confront the Washington establishment, a hallmark of Mr. Trump's pitch to voters, over one who makes an appeal based on competence and compassion, key themes during the Democratic convention. In addition, these voters want Republicans to lead the next Congress rather than Democrats, 42% to 25%."

Meanwhile, Hispanics are the largest minority voting bloc in the U.S., and President Trump has gained ground with that demographic in the poll, as 31% say they will vote for Trump vs. the 28% that voted for him in 2016, according to the Journal.

"Hispanic voters aren't a unified bloc, and their partisan profile varies by state," the Journal wrote. "But Mr. Trump could make gains in Florida, Arizona and several other battleground states if he cuts into Democratic margins among Hispanic voters."

In terms of the handling of the economy, often a No. 1 issue for voters in past presidential elections, Trump (48%) holds a 10-point lead on Biden (38%), per the poll.

"Mr. Trump is still favored on the economy, and that's the top issue people are using to decide their vote," Republican pollster Micah Roberts told the Journal.

Also, Trump holds a strong lead among white voters, per the poll.

"Trump improved his image among whites by about 20 points in the last four years," Roberts told the Journal. "That's very important because they are more than 70% of the electorate."

The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll report did not report its methodology on who was polled, the dates, or the margin of error.

At the end of Obama's last budget year the unemployment rate was 4.1%, and a month before the pandemic hit it was at 3.5%.

Trump is a true economic genius by lowering the unemployment rate a whole 0.6% before sending back into the double digits like his last Republican predecessor.

The pandemic hit the EU a lot harder than it hit us in March/April, and the EU has managed to keep unemployment steady at 7-8% (in the wealthy EU countries like Germany it’s even lower).

Our economy was fundamentally broken before Trump took office, there’s no question about that, but he only made it worse with his tax plan. The result is a pandemic that cratered our economy a lot more than it did the economy of other industrialized countries with more robust safety net programs in place.

The premise of these conspiracy theories is that Trump is an enemy to the wealthy oligarch establishment and they’re actively seeking to destroy him which makes the theories ridiculous to being with. 2018 was the first year in American history where billionaires had a lower effective tax rate than working class Americans. Trump has been a boon for billionaire elites while he’s been in office, there’s no logical reason they’d want him removed.

So you agree that a Trump presidency enriches billionaires at the expense of public programs and it doesn’t bother you?

His feud with Bezos is largely theatre. Trump’s postmaster general owns tens of millions of dollars worth of Amazon stock. If he really hated Bezos that much I don’t think he would have appointed a postmaster general whos personal finances conflict with charging Amazon more money to use the USPS.

Regarding Soros, he’s a lightweight compared to the right wing oligarchs (Charles Koch and Sheldon Adelson). I’ve yet to receive a coherent explanation as to how Soros is able to pull so many strings behind the scenes while Koch and Adelson both have multiples of financial resources at their disposal vs what Soros has but there’s never any conspiracy theories involving them.

20% of the time Tucker has intelligent thoughts to offer (one example would be how Citibank adding a #BLM page to their website is a hollow gesture when they’re raping black people with high interest subprime loans), but the other 80% of the time he’s just pedaling right wing cliches and talking points which drowns his intelligent stuff out (ie when he brings Sarah Palin onto his show to talk about how Joe Biden is a radical leftist).

If the COVID curve in the US followed the same trend as the European countries like Italy, France, etc. whereby we’d have new cases down to an extremely low level and would be ready to open up, Trump would be winning in a landslide right now. Americans always give presidents the benefit of the doubt in the middle of a crisis when it’s handled with a modicum of competency (ie GWB having an 80% approval rating post 9/11), just look at how Trump’s approval rating spiked in late March. people seem wary to return to the workplace, employers seem wary to challenge that

This summer, executives at health-care-technology firm Epic Systems announced a plan: Most of the 9,500 employees at its 1,000-acre campus in Wisconsin would be expected back in the office in September.

The company, like many others, says its employees do their best work when they can collaborate in the same space. But blowback to the mandate was swift. Employees expressed fears about safety and spreading the new coronavirus. Local health officials questioned the move. So Epic joined legions of other companies making late-in-the-game changes to office-reopening plans, saying this month that staffers could work from home at least through the new year….

Expecting the virus to be under control by Labor Day, many employers had hoped to bring white-collar workers back to the office next month. But as cases rose in dozens of states throughout the summer, major school districts settled on remote or hybrid instruction, complicating the picture for working parents. Some employers have already scuttled plans to force office workers back so soon.

They include some of the country’s biggest companies. In an August survey of 15 major employers that collectively employ about 2.6 million people, 57% said they had decided to postpone their back-to-work plans because of recent increases in Covid-19 cases. Nearly half said they were putting in additional safety measures for when they reopen, such as redesigned workspaces and temperature checks.

Only one respondent said the summer surge of infections hadn’t affected its timeline or plans for bringing workers back.

Just say you love Trump and you don't know why. Every single Trump supporter feels the same.

Biden said he did not want his kids to grow up in a racial jungle..and today he refers to black kids as roaches. I just figured you racial equality experts/advocates might be a little concerned about that. Guess that stuff is ok since he has a (D) next to his name.

Tell me your feelings on Joe Biden calling black kids roaches. That's ok, why?
It’s not OK, but it’s a binary option, and ultimately that kind of stuff is just words, not policy. It’s not like the choice is between Biden, Trump, and some other Democrat who doesn’t say Jim Crow era shit about black people. Trump isn’t exactly free of a checkered past on race either - his conspiracy theory about Obama’s birth certificate was motivated by race.

Biden’s comments about roaches inflict a lot less harm onto the black community than Trump’s platform would be if he’s successful in gutting protections for people with preexisting conditions or rolling back the Medicaid expansion that occurred under Obamacare. Privatize the post office and that takes away another several hundred thousand jobs for black Americans that pay a wage high enough for them to raise a family and contribute to society. The reason Biden will still get over 90+% support from black voters despite his checkered past on race is because the Republicans offer absolutely nothing to black people beyond “We’re gonna help you help yourself by taking away your food stamps and Medicaid so you pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get a job!”

Well, we have all this supposed outrage over the Flloyd incident...and there's always a Jill Stein or Gary Johnson on the ballot for people who actually have strong convictions.

I agree we need a safety net to help those in need. But welfare was never meant to be a career choice. There's a fine line there. On one hand, you have the democrats who almost encourage welfare abuse and want to provide free everything to their voting base so they keep them voting left. And then you have the Republicans, who, as you say, just tell them to get a job. What do you suggest? What is the happy medium, magic pill that gets people to take pride in themselves and go to work?

There’s no Jill’s Stein this year and Gary Johnson style libertarians have the same austerity agenda that’sjust as bad for black people as Republicans are.

I suggest an infrastructure spending program that at least for the next 5-10 years gives jobs to those who need them. At that point I’m fine with kicking able bodied people off welfare if they’re simply choosing to be lazy (I think you’ll find examples of this are a lot less frequent than you believe). There’s trillions of dollars of work that needs to be done across the country to restore infrastructure (there are still parts of the country that use fucking wooden pipes for plumbing). That addresses the problem in the short term.

Beyond that, people from both parties need to realize that long term there aren’t going to be enough 40 hour/week jobs for every American in the workforce no matter what political party is in power. The economy of the 1950s isn’t ever coming back. Imo the long term solution is a UBI and also reducing the work week with a higher hourly wage so more people are working. The problem we have is that workers are a lot more productive now than they were 50 years ago, but all the profits from that increased productivity go to the employer.

I like the bolded part.

Worry about a UBI long term as I see it as an incentive and innovation killer. But I could see it utilized as a temporary solution to kick start the economy. Once we pull those who are in the shadows into the workforce they become conditioned to work and pride will no longer allow them to sit on their hands. You are right, the 50's economy is long gone. If you want more expendable income you just have to find a side hustle in addition to your 9-5.

Which is a problem. There’s more than enough income and wealth in this country for someone who works 40 hours a week to make an honest living that involves expendable income and a savings account.

I agree completely with everything about getting people who are out of the workforce back into a job they can take pride in so they can contribute to society, but you lost me with the comment about getting a side hustle. Someone who works 40 hours a week in an Amazon warehouse is more productive and is adding more value than a GM plant worker was 50 years ago. If the GM plant worker was productive enough to make a comfortable wage, so is the Amazon worker.

Court pares back federal Anti-Riot Act
But 4th Circuit judges uphold the use of the 1968 law to convict two men for violence at the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Va.

A federal appeals court has narrowed an anti-riot law the Trump administration is wielding to bring federal charges against individuals accused of fueling civil unrest following the death of George Floyd in an encounter with Minneapolis police.

However, the Richmond-based 4th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the use of the federal statute against two California men convicted of spurring violence in connection with the white supremacist Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va., in August 2017, Michael Miselis and Benjamin Daley.
The three-judge appeals court panel unanimously concluded that language in the Anti-Riot Act that makes it a crime to “encourage,” “promote” or urge a riot is unconstitutionally overbroad because it encompasses speech protected by the First Amendment.

While the decision pares back the 1968 law, the outcome could have been worse for the Justice Department.
Last year, a federal judge in Santa Ana, Calif., ruled the entire federal Anti-Riot Act unconstitutional because of the same free-speech concern. Based on that ruling, the judge tossed out (https://lawprofessors.typepad.com/files/usvrundoetal-dismissal.pdf) a criminal case filed there against three other alleged members of the Rise Above Movement who did not travel to Charlottesville. Prosecutors have appealed that decision to the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit.

The ruling Monday from the 4th Circuit does not go as far, leaving in place federal authorities’ ability to use the law against individuals who “organize” or “incite” a riot.
“In our view, the Anti-Riot Act sweeps up a substantial amount of speech that retains the status of protected advocacy,” Barack Obama appointee Albert Diaz wrote in a 46-page decision (https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000174-21ba-d006-a7f4-e1bf41e80000) joined by Bill Clinton appointee Robert King and Donald Trump appointee Allison Rushing. “The appropriate remedy is to invalidate no more than the language responsible for the statute’s overbreadth.”

Back in May, Attorney General William Barr specifically cited the anti-riot statute (https://www.politico.com/news/2020/05/30/william-barr-george-floyd-protests-290792) as he warned that the federal government intended to prosecute those involved in riots.

“It is a federal crime to cross state lines or to use interstate facilities to incite or participate in violent rioting. We will enforce these laws,” Barr told reporters at a news conference.

soft on Turkey breaking US sanctions on Iran, for some reason

In his book “The Room Where It Happened”, released in June, Bolton said that Trump tried to scuttle (https://ahvalnews.com/halkbank/powerful-us-organised-crime-attorney-fall-victim-turkeys-halkbank-case) the sanctions-busting investigation into Halkbank as a favour to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2018.https://ahvalnews.com/halkbank-case/us-judge-overseeing-sanctions-busting-case-against-halkbank-will-not-recuse-himself

If you vote for biden you can !

Blake, economically, death is not a big issue for ducks and his family.

If you die, it would be a major funeral expense (upwards of $7k average).

If ducks dies, he gets placed in a match box and tossed in cat’s litter box. $20 at most (includes psychological help for cat).

All about Benjamins.

Have a Blake day!

Eternal, relentless CRAPIFICATION

FDA promotes pro-Trump propaganda after gun-loving ex-OAN reporter becomes its spokeswoman

https://www.rawstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/emily-miller.jpg

The Twitter account for the Food and Drug Administration has started promoting propagandistic announcements lauding the Trump administration’s “achievements” in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic —

shortly after President Donald Trump appointed a gun-loving former reporter for One America News :lol as the agency’s spokeswoman.

the FDA this week issued an uncharacteristically political press release that

touted the authorization of convalescent plasma as

“Another achievement in [the Trump] administration’s fight against pandemic.” :lol 200K+ dead! :lol

Miller’s work as a right-wing journalist over the years in which

she fabricated quotes from former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton,

while also pushing conspiracy theories about the Obama administration (https://www.mediamatters.org/sean-hannity/conservative-media-see-ridiculous-government-conspiracy-smart-gun-technology-push) trying to “track law-abiding citizens” with its promotion of “smart gun” technology that

would allow guns to be fired only by authorized users.

Miller is also the author of a book titled, “Emily Gets Her Gun… But Obama Wants to Take Yours.”

Some Trump administration claims on effectiveness of convalescent plasma are wrong or dubious

The assertion was breathtaking: Out of 100 people who suffered from the illness caused by the novel coronavirus (https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/02/28/what-you-need-know-about-coronavirus/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2), 35 were saved by the injection of antibody-rich plasma from people who had survived the disease.

That’s how Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn described the blood product’s effectiveness

the 35-out-of-100 claim wasn’t accurate (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/08/24/fda-head-toes-trump-line-plasma-goes-too-far/?itid=lk_inline_manual_9), scientists said Monday.

The FDA commissioner appeared to have mixed up absolute risk reduction and relative risk reduction, which are basic concepts in economics and in the presentation of data from clinical trials.

“I’m absolutely incredulous,” said Peter Lurie, a former top FDA official and now the president of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

On Monday night, Hahn in a tweet acknowledged he had misspoken during the news briefing about the findings of the convalescent plasma study.

The criticism is entirely justified,” Hahn wrote. “What I should have said better is that the data show a relative risk reduction not an absolute risk reduction.”

“The head of the United States Food and Drug Administration (!) @SteveFDA (https://twitter.com/SteveFDA)

does not understand the difference between relative and absolute risk reduction —

a basic, fundamental concept in medicine, statistics and clinical trial interpretation.

It just gets worse and worse.”

So he misspoke. Not a big deal.

The effectiveness of convalescent plasma is quite obviously a thing. During the first few months of existence, unborn children in their mother's womb receive antibodies from their mother via the placenta. It's called passive immunity as they are not making the antibodies themselves. This is a similar effect.

Convalescent plasma was a proven treatment even back in the day of the Flu pandemic. There should be no controversy about it's usefulness. We can discuss how effective it is, but there's no doubt that's better than nothing at all.

This strikes me as being kind of a big deal. The US Chamber of Commerce is maybe the biggest lobbyist out there and is a weather vane for the business community generally.

When was the last time the US Chamber of Commerce endorsed the Democratic candidate for President?

(Not rhetorical, I don't recall.)

Market expectations for weekly initial unemployment claims (from Econoday) were 925 K to 1,100 K (consensus 987 K), and the Department of Labor reported 1,006,000 new claims. The more important (because of the volatility in the weekly reported claims and seasonality errors in adjusting the data) 4 week moving average moved from 1,175,250 (reported last week as 1,175,750) to 1,068,000…. Jobs loss since the start of the pandemic is now 58,689,000. Many in this number are now employed or have dropped out of the workforce as the all programs continuing claims number is 27,017,232http://econintersect.com/pages/releases/release.php?post=202008270740
