In private, dismayed European officials describe Trump’s rush to annex the sovereign Danish territory as “crazy” and “mad,” asking if he is caught up in his “warrior mode” after his Venezuela adventure — and saying he deserves Europe’s toughest retaliation for what many see as a clear and unprovoked “attack” against allies on the other side of the Atlantic.

“I think it is perceived as one step too far,” said one European diplomat, who like others was granted anonymity to speak candidly. “Europe has been criticized for being weak against Trump. There is some truth in that, but there are red lines.”

Senior European officials increasingly believe it’s time to face the truth that Trump’s America is no longer a reliable trade partner, still less a dependable security ally, and urgently look to the future. “There is a shift in U.S. policy and in many ways it is permanent,” according to a senior official with a European government. “Waiting it out is not a solution. What needs to be done is an orderly and coordinated movement to a new reality.”

Barring a radical shift in the approach of the United States, this process seems likely to end in a radical reshaping of the West that would upend the global balance of power. Feb 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he planned to close the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts for two years for reconstruction starting in July.

The national arts and entertainment center in Washington has been marked by turmoil in recent months following Trump's appointment of himself as chairman, his push to change the organization's focus, plans for reconstruction, and the board's addition of his name to the institution.

Under Trump's plan, the center would close on July 4, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Melania Trump is trying to have the lawsuit struck down by claiming she has not been properly served.

The bombshell claim about the couple’s origin story appeared in an FBI record dated November 2019 (https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%209/EFTA00159321.pdf), which details a July interview with a woman whose name was redacted—and who was given immunity to speak. The document is heavily redacted and suggests that the woman was treated as a victim of sexual assault, as well as a witness who offered horrific details of Epstein’s regime of sexual assault at on his private island.

The interview was with both FBI agents and career federal prosecutors, and is recorded as a “proffer agreement.” A “proffer” is when a witness gives evidence they assert is truthful in return for an agreement not to be prosecuted, or some other limited form of immunity. The document does not say what she was offered immunity from. Making a false statement to the FBI can lead to up to five years in prison.

Now, as the country prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday and ponders its appetite for President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigration, the US risks recording a historic and economic milestone decades ahead of schedule: Based on at least one respected estimate, 2026 may see the first real population decline in American history.

Even if that milestone doesn’t happen this year, there’s broad agreement among experts on both sides of the immigration debate that Trump’s second term is hastening a critical point — when net migration into the US stops offsetting the declining births and rising deaths that come with an aging native-born population. The more Trump cracks down on immigration, the sooner the US population plateaus or even shrinks.

A country’s population is an essential element of its economic mass. I spent a few hours yesterday gathering every major poll from the past week that asked about specific ICE reforms and enforcement practices. The results are captured in the chart below.

Each bar in the chart above shows net support for various reforms in the anti-ICE/pro-Democrat direction. So, for example, the bar labeled “Admin targeting all undocumented” at +28 comes from a Navigator Research poll that found 64% of voters think the Trump administration is targeting “all undocumented immigrants” vs 36% who think policy is focused on “serious criminals.” So that’s a 28-point margin for the Democratic position (that Trump has enacted a broad policy that’s not what Americans supported in 2024).

Some notable survey results: Quinnipiac University found in their Jan. 29 - Feb. 2 poll that 92% of registered voters support requiring ICE agents to wear body cameras. Five percent of people opposed the reform, so it’s at +87 on the chart.

The same Quinnipiac poll also found 80% support an independent investigation (https://poll.qu.edu/poll-release?releaseid=3946) into the ICE/federal agent shootings that killed Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Jan. 2026. Just 15% opposed (that’s +75).

The Pew Research Center, in a survey conducted Jan. 20-26, found 74% of Americans say it is acceptable for civilians to record ICE officers while they are conducting operations. The same survey found 72% say it is unacceptable to stop people based solely on their appearance — a direct rebuke of racial profiling during enforcement.

Additionally, Navigator Research, in a poll conducted Jan. 29 through Feb. 1, found 66% of voters (https://navigatorresearch.org/all-eyes-are-on-ice/) prefer a “balanced approach” to immigration over strict enforcement alone. And 65% said deportations should primarily target people with criminal convictions — not anyone who happens to lack documentation.

And finally, both Quinnipiac and Pew independently found that 61% of Americans oppose ICE agents wearing masks during operations.

Between 60% and 90% of Americans support most ICE reforms in this polling. Not just a majority, a supermajority of voters say they want transparency, accountability, rules, and oversight. That even includes a lot of Republicans, and a broad majority of political independents.

But when it comes to former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was tried and convicted in the U.S. in 2024 and sentenced to 45 years (https://web.archive.org/web/20260204041054/https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/juan-orlando-hernandez-former-president-honduras-sentenced-45-years-prison-conspiring) in prison for taking bribes and allowing traffickers to export more than 400 tons of cocaine to the U.S., Trump has taken a decidedly softer tone.

Hernández, he said, has been “treated very harshly and unfairly” — so unfairly that on Dec. 1, Trump pardoned the former president after he served less than four of those 45 years.

But the federal government’s magnanimity did not end there. On the day he was to be released, records show, Hernández had an immigration detainer — a request for law enforcement agencies to hold noncitizens for pickup by Immigration and Customs Enforcement — in place.

Here, too, the Trump’s administration’s treatment of Hernández differed from its public objectives.
