On January 1, the Canadian province of Ontario raised its minimum wage from $11.60/hour to $14/hour. How are businesses responding? Probably exactly how you would expect.

According to the Bank of Canada, because of the forced wage hike there will be an estimated 60,000 fewer jobs available in Ontario by 2019. Not just that, businesses are beginning to do what businesses do: react to changes in the market. Both Pizza Hut and Subway — to name a few — notified their customers that prices would increase as a result of the minimum wage hike.

According to Aaron Aerts and Laura Jones of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, “The negative impacts will ripple throughout the economy: layoffs, reduced hours and fewer opportunities for young workers; higher prices for consumers; increased automation; and reduced investment. Pretending these impacts don’t exist is fa-la-la-la-la economics.”

A survey by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business is reporting that over 50% of small businesses are going to be raising the price of products and services in response to the wage hike. Additionally, over 50% of small business employers have already made plans to not hire any new employees for the year, while over one quarter of small businesses will be reducing the amount of staff currently hired.

Even more staggering, only 33% of small business owners have proactively responded to the minimum wage hike. In other words, the minimum wage increase is serving its intended function for only one-third of small businesses in Canada. Small and medium-sized businesses employ over 90% of Canadians in the private sector.

“{We} won’t be able to hire the same number of students next year — we normally hire eight or more; this year we are thinking maybe two.” Another says: “We have decided not to hire students coming out of university or college but focus more on experienced workers over the age of 40.” Yet another: “We will be shortening our hours of operation and decreasing the number of student workers. There will be less customer service available.”

People in San Francisco are spending up to $60 dollars to drink the untreated water. Sold by a company called Live Water, bottles of the filth are flying off the shelves, according to the New York Times. Others, it is reported, are gathering and storing untreated spring water—known to harbor potentially lethal bacteria that survivalists, travel guides, and soldiers will warn you from drinking.

Food safety experts warn that consuming so-called “raw” water can cause deadly infections including cholera, hepatitis A, and E. coli, among other water-borne diseases.

Startups dedicated to selling untreated water are also on the rise. One company, called Zero Mass Water, is selling products that allow people to collect their own water from rivers and streams near their homes. The New York Times reports that the company has already raised more than $24 in venture capital funding.

The paper reports that enthusiasts of the fad are venturing out at night onto private property to purloin untreated water from natural springs to quench their thirst.

One enthusiast, Doug Evans, who founded the failed high-profile startup company Juicero, says he and his friends brought 50 gallons of untreated water to the Burning Man festival last year.

Juicero, for what it’s worth, is dubbed the “weird bad juice machine.” It ran out of business due to a flaw in their subscription-based product—drinkers could simply squeeze the juice out with their bare hands without having to spend $400 on their WiFi-enabled juicer.

“I’m extreme about health, I know, but I’m not alone with this,” Evans said. “There are a lot of people doing this with me. You never know who you’ll run into at the spring.”

Supporters of the raw water drinking fad told the Times that there is no scientific validity to the “product,” but they felt confident they were getting health benefits from it.

Live Water founder Mukhande Singh says that untreated water produced by his startup came with an expiration—something that is normal for “real water.”

“It stays most fresh within one lunar cycle of delivery,” said Singh. “If it sits around too long, it’ll turn green. People don’t even realize that because all their water’s dead, so they never see it turn green.”

It's not just business management. It's a different business model. Selling in bulk / memberships allow for the lower prices. And the higher wages allow for more professionalism / abilities. Have you not walked through a Wal-Mart and seen many of their empolyees goofing off and swearing and just being all around shitty workers? That sh** doesn't fly at Costco. They don't put up with that sh** because they don't have to. Wal Mart is scraping the bottom of the barrel; as such, they have to give their employees more leeway.

Democratic Congressman Boycotting Trump’s State Of The Union Address


President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address is still over three weeks away but one Democratic congressman has already announced his plans to boycott the annual address.

“Rather than listening to another destructive, divisive speech by Trump, I will not attend this year’s annual address to Congress,” Oregon Rep. Earl Blumenauer said in a statement. “Instead, like I did during his inauguration, I’ll be working at home listening to Oregonians about what they think about the State of the Union!”

“Hearing from Oregonians and working together to protect our values and advance policies that actually strengthen our communities is a more productive use of my time,” Blumenauer said.

This isn’t the first time Democrats have bucked tradition by boycotting a speech from the president. Dozens of Democrats boycotted Trump’s inauguration following his shocking victory over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

Several Democrats also boycotted Trump’s first address to a joint session of Congress in February last year. Following that address, Blumenauer garnered attention for his one-word response to Trump’s speech: “Resist.”

President Trump’s 2018 State of the Union address will take place Jan. 30.

Over 1 million getting 'Trump Bonus' from tax reform victory, up to $3,000


Over 1 million American workers with over 100 companies are set to receive a bonus, pay hike or retirement increase as a direct result of President Trump’s tax reform package.

The latest list from Americans for Tax Reform, which has been collecting the names of firms paying the Trump bonus, finds that some are paying as much as $3,000.

Many of those firms have reached out to Secrets to get added to the list since we’ve been publishing ATR’s list compiled by the tax reform advocate’s communications chief John Kartch.

One company, IAT Insurance of Raleigh, N.C., wrote Secrets today asking to be added. “I just read your story on the 100 companies giving bonuses after tax reform. On December 11, IAT Insurance Group announced their pledge to reinvest tax savings into what makes IAT great, their employees. After the bill officially passed, IAT announced on December 21 their plan to pay all non-executive employees a $3,000 bonus on January 15, 2018,” said the company.

Feds Raid 20 Chinese Immigrant 'Birth Hotels' In Los Angeles



A day after the Trump administration launched the largest immigration raids in nearly a decade, federal agents stormed 20 "birth hotels" in California.

Chinese nationals use the so-called birth hotels in order to win citizenship for their children — in most situations, a child born in the United States or one of its territories will automatically receive American citizenship. Women often pay as much as $100,000 to get into one of the hotels.

NBC News was on the scene as Homeland Security agents swept into The Carlyle, a luxury property in Irvine, California, which housed pregnant women and new moms who allegedly forked over $40,000 to $80,000 to give birth in the United States.

"I am doing this for the education of the next generation," one of the women told NBC News.

None of the women were arrested; they are being treated as material witnesses, and paramedics were on hand in case any of them went into labor during the sweep.

In the unprecedented federal sting operation, the feds raided 20 locations in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties. They were looking for the masterminds of the operations, who make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year off the scam. "It's not necessarily illegal to come here to have the baby, but if you lie about your reasons for coming here, that's visa fraud," Claude Arnold, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations for Los Angeles, told NBC.

Chinese listing sites show several hundred birth hotels in California. In 2015, the State Department issued 2.3 million visas to Chinese tourists.

The organizers who allegedly ran the Carlyle site, Chao Chen and Dong Li, used a website to drum up business, touting the benefits of a child with U.S. citizenship: 13 years of free education, low-cost college financial aid, less pollution, and a path for the entire family to emigrate when the child becomes an adult.

Clients were counseled on what lies to tell to obtain a tourist visa; how to fly through Hawaii, Las Vegas or Korea to avoid suspicious immigration officers at Los Angeles International Airport; and how to disguise their pregnancy in transit, according to search warrant affidavit unsealed Tuesday.

The women get discounted rates at hospitals to deliver their babies. "More than 400 babies linked to the scheme were born at just one facility in a two-year period, investigators said," NBC reported. That costs the hospitals millions — costs borne by Americans in the form of higher charges.

On Wednesday, immigration agents swept into dozens of 7-Eleven convenience stores nationwide, checking employees’ immigration status.

In the early morning raids, agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hit more than 100 stores across the country, arresting 21 people.The raids were the largest since President Trump took office and expanded on the increased enforcement of existing laws. There has already been a 40% increase in deportation arrests since January 2016.

Derek Benner, a top ICE official, told the Associated Press that the operation was “the first of many” and “a harbinger of what’s to come” for employers that don't comply with the law.

“This is what we’re gearing up for this year and what you’re going to see more and more of is these large-scale compliance inspections, just for starters,” said Benner, acting head of ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations, which oversees cases against employers.
