Man 2017 has not been a good year for the PC so far. Not like a couple of years ago when I was blown away by Dying Light in Feb 2015. And then as soon as I finished that GTA V released on PC in April and completely blew the 360 version of the game I already had out of the water. Then Witcher 3 launched a month later and I was playing that shit forever until Fallout 4, which was also top notch shit. This year man Resident Evil 7 and Prey haven't excited me at all and the only games I played on PC have been Dark Souls 1 (incredible but old), What Remains of Edith Finch (an awesome casual game but only 2-3 hours long), and then NieR Automata (highly recommended 80-100 hour action RPG). Are you going to try to tell me crap like Ghost Recon Wildlands or For Honor is worth playing? We'll be getting some really solid PC releases starting in a couple of months with Wolfenstein II, South Park Fractured But Whole, COD WWII (I can't believe that game actually looks epic), and Shadow of War, but man it's been a slow year on PC so far outside of NieR. Even in a down year like 2016 we still had epic DLC for Dying Light and The Witcher 3 as well as releases of Dark Souls III and Rise of the Tomb Raider plus one of the best puzzle games I have ever played in The Witness in the first half of the year.

It's shit. Every AAA port is pile of unoptimized mess, PC is NEVER the lead platform in development, and the community in multiplayer games die after like 2 months, unless it's fuckin' Counterstrike or LoL, which PC neckbeards can't seem to pull themselves away from.
Aside from the games you mentioned, PC gaming has been going downhill since 2014. I remember how clean the ports were for the Arkham games. We got Physx, DX11, and everything ran like butter. Then Arkham Knight was released with a shitload of expectation and was a glitchy pile of shit. Seemed to be a watershed event. Ever since then, the attitude toward PC gaming from publishers/developers is, "Release now, patch a year from now, if ever. Doesn't matter, the PC gaming community will fix our laziness."
That said, it's still worth investing in a PC for anyone on the fence. So MANY games to play from the last 20 years, from the original Half Life, Fallout series, Stalker series, Witcher, Left4Dead, Bioshock, all the great strategy games, like the Total War series and Company of Heroes, etc, etc. And all can be had for dirt cheap on Steam, as you know.

80's were bad, with those shoddy Mega Man DOS ports and the like. But 90's PC was good. EA always took care when porting their sports games. That said, the two platforms really didn't crossover much in the 90's. Consoles actually got more PC ports (Mechwarrior, a lot of those full motion video games, Doom, Quake, Duke Nuke 'Em etc) than vice-versa.

Are you fucking serious? Please explain why, and if you haven't seen the gameplay you should check it out. It's another shitty reskin with screeching female voices. There will be no dedicated servers, no modding, and zero chance for immersion with what will almost certainly be a shit campaign. The player count on PC will be gone after 2 months. Buy it for your poorstation/peasantbox instead where the player count will stay high.
If you want a good WW2 PvP shooter, check out Day of Infamy instead

The only thing they've released about the campaign was that cinematic trailer that had like 5 seconds of gameplay, unless I'm missing something. Not sure you can get much outta that, but okay. Paying 60 for a 5 hour campaign isn't my cup of tea. Just pirate it (if possible) instead. I have zero trust in Sledgehammer. The campaign in Advanced Warfare was awful, and comments from the devs about how they've handled things this time gives me zero hope

Zelda's so tempting right now...but hard to justify buying a console for one game.
Right now i'm jist going through some Ps1 and Ps2 JRPG classics...Suikoden, Final Fantasy 10...
Man didn't realize how atrocious the story is for FF games and FF10 is one of my all tome favojrote games...:lol
Suikoden 2 Still holds a lot of punch. The more time flies the mpre I lean towards Suikoden 2 as by far and away the best JRPG for Ps1.
They made a brilliant and killer move by Staying 2D. It still easy to appreciate the art compared to games like FF7 and other 3d games where everything looks Garbage.

I do, those gamepads were stiff as shit and the fighting games were complete shit too. I remember playing FX Fighter on the PC back in the day, which also was complete shit. It was very floaty from what I remember, the characters moved around like they were underwater. I also remember 4D boxing :lol, man so horrible yet I was oddly addicted to that game. The concept was new enough for me, despite the game being horrible, for me to have fun with it.
Back to the gamepad though, I remember getting a Microsoft Sidewinder and it was a lot better than those Gravis gamepads but the D-pad was horrible for fighting games. Good times though despite the struggle.

Man those Gravis Gamepads were so much better than the Logitech F310 that I bought a year or so ago when my 360 controller dongle for PC started acting shitty. That fucking thing had triggers so stiff it hurt your fingers to hold them down. I remember playing Assassins Creed Revelations where you're constantly holding the right trigger down to run and jump and shit and my finger was just fucking dead after 15 minutes holding that trigger down.

:lol the Saturn, I had that piece of shit too. I remember being at Toys R Us with my dad in the summer of '95 I think. I saw the Saturn there and I was like "holy shit" and begged my dad to get it for me that same day. He got it for me, for the low price of $399 in 1995, which with inflation today would be like $600 I'm guessing. I was a kid, I didn't know how much money was back then. Anyway, I feel bad for him since $400 was a ton of money and the thing was such a fucking flop that I rarely played because the games mostly sucked but there was a good year or so where I had a lot of fun.
I think the launch games that I got were Clockwork Knights and Virtua Fighter. CK was just a horrible game, holy shit. VF had its problems but it was fun. Then months later, Sega released VF Remix which was Virtua Fighter but with updated graphics and wow, that game blew my mind. But yeah, the best one was Virtua Fighter 2. I also had a lot of fun with Virtual On, Fighting Vipers and Fighters Megamix. I remember you could fight freaking Daytona USA cars against one another in Fighters Megamix. :lol Fighting Vipers was also great game, it had a gimmick where your characters' armor just started to breakaway if you were hit enough. But the most fun I had was with Virtual On, that game was an acquired taste from what I gathered throughout the years. You either liked it or you didn't but back then but to me, it was so much fun. Fighting mechs with the camera behind in a 3rd person view and each mech were unique enough that you favored one over the other because of their strengths and weaknesses. Such a great game.
But apparently what made the Saturn (and I didn't know until way later) were the Saturn imports from Japan. Like baseline bum (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=131) said, the Saturn was huge over there and it had such a huge library. But fuck if I knew anything about importing games back in '95. The American version only had 258 games while the Japanese version had 1,265 games.

And since the Saturn had a better 2d chip than the PS1, the best ports of Darkstalkers and Sf alpha were on there.

That's the problem though, it had a lot of great arcade ports but severely lacked traditional games. Too bad it was a bitch to program for and it was severely lacking in the 3D department. Sony knew that gaming was headed towards 3D while Sega didn't really make the Saturn with that in mind. But as far as 2D games were concerned, the Saturn versions of 2D games were way better than the PSX versions. But yeah, Panzer Dragoon was a really good game. Nights was alright, it was cool and used that weird Saturn 3D controller that came packed in with the game. I remember buying that. Speaking of which, the regular six button Saturn controller was so fucking good. One of the best controllers ever made imo.
So many quirky things too, those Sega Saturn game cases always fucking broke. They were so flimsy. And I still remember the intro and menu when you powered the system to insert the CD. Good times despite its short life.

Yeah I remember it sucking ass on the Saturn as well. Arcade games were always so far ahead of the consoles back in the 90s though. Eventually consoles caught up to the arcades in the late 90s when the Dreamcast came out. The Dreamcast will always be my #1 system. So fucking good.

Yes it was (in the first two years, not overall) Did you read Next Generation back then? (if you don't know, Next Gen was considered the "mature" magazine for hardcore gamers in contrast to mags like Gamepro and EGM, which were targeted toward kids). In 1996, they released their 100 greatest games of all-time issue (I have it right here). 5 games made the list from the Playstation's library, with the highest being Tekken 2 at #22. 7 games from the Saturn's library made the list, with VF2 ranking the highest at #6. I can also dig out my 1996 buying guide from Gameplayers that does recommend gamers to buy a PS1 since its future looks brighter, but also states that the Saturn's current library is stronger.
I'm sure you remember that 5th generation consoles back then were built around fighting games, racing games, and sports games. Genres like FPSes (on consoles), third person shooters, and RPGs were either terrible (FPSes on consoles), in their infancy, or niche. And developers were still figuring out how to do 3D platformers right.
Taste is subjective, obviously, but VF2 and Fighting Vipers out-rated Tekken 2 and Toshinden in virtually all the mags. Sega Rally out-rated Ridge Racer. You had games like Virtua Cop and Virtual On. The best ports of Capcom's 2D fighters were on the Saturn. The best reviewed soccer and baseball games were on the Saturn (I would also personally put NBA Action ahead of Live and Showdown, but Saturn had nothing like NFL Gameday). Panzer Dragoon was a better rail shooter than Warhawk (which was a big game for the PS1 in its formative days) and Nights was better than Jumping Flash. The really only killer exclusives Playstation had at this time were Resident Evil and Wipeout XL.
Obviously, the Playstation would pull massively ahead in the coming years, but from 1995-1997, the Saturn's library was stronger (per reviews, obviously. If you like Ridge Racer more than Sega Rally, or Tekken better than VF, then more power to ya. It's subjective at the end of the day).

Is JC3 worth the download? I loved JC 2.. the storyline was god awful along with the cutscenes and voice acting but I mainly just like doing stunts and killing people in amusing ways..
I only played it long enough to see how it performed on my PC, so I can't comment. Fitgirl has an 18GB repack of it, though her repacks can take a couple of hours to install even if you have an overclocked i7.

The Dreamcast was an amazing console though.. So many good games, and the jump to the Dreamcast graphically was a larger margin than any other I'd seen besides maybe watching NBA 2K6 in motion on 360 for the first time. Watching that opening level on Sonic with the orca jumping behind you was epic IMO.. Resident Evil Code Veronica while fried on acid was one of my best moments in gaming as well.
Dreamcast was amazing, much better graphically than anything else at the time. Plus the VMU was so unique.

It's not the greatest game, tbh, but if you liked some of the older ME, this is basically on par... like ME3 had a terrible ending, but the game was more or less enjoyable...

Steampunks doesn't do any of the packing, they just crack the games. Fitgirl's repacks take forever to install because in the case of JC3 you're decompressing 60GB worth of data that was packed into 18GB. Fitgirl tries to squeeze them into the smallest possible size without losing data (eg all her compression is lossless). Corepacks compresses their repacks too but not as much as Fitgirl, and their repacks usually install more quickly (though nowhere near as fast as the uncompressed games you get from places like skidrowreloaded.com, igg-games.com, or nosteam.ro).

Yeah I do want to play the Nier storyline leading up to Automata. Supposedly the chain goes Drakengard 1 -> Nier -> NieR Automata. Mostly the performance is pretty good on Drakengard on PCSX2, but occasionally in big fights I get brief slowdowns where the music turns weird, and I know that's not the PS2 but the emulator causing them. You might get Persona fatigue but don't skip out on Persona 3 FES if you're hooking up your PS2. I don't know how PS3 FES performs on PCSX2 and you really don't need to play it per se seeing as there's no continuity of the Persona series from one game to another like the Final Fantasy series but I liked PS3 FES a little bit better than Persona 4 which says a lot since I really really liked Persona 4.

Love those ultra wide monitors...
I'm at pretty much end-game with the system as it stands other than having a new GPU for VR.
There's more to it, I might re-add the second monitor back at some point if I buy a larger table or get some stands for the speakers -- but for now 34" is plenty, I can run two windows in parallel with no problem, and I prefer the incredible sound the JBL's put out to having a 2nd display anyway, so I'll deal with the amount of space they take up.
It's absolutely bonkers that you can have a legitimately killer audio rig for so cheap these days. I would feel confident about putting the 305s in a much larger room, they throw down something fierce and bat WAY above their price range for sound quality. I would instantly recommend them to anyone... though in full disclosure they're the newest part of the setup so I'm a little biased. :lol

Well it's either a 1080 or Vega 56 right now. Just waiting for the Vega 56 launch... and for prices to stop rising because of fucking miners. :lol
Why buy a 1080 if you have a FreeSync monitor? Man if you're rocking a 3440x1440 monitor you should be looking Vega 64, fuck Vega 56. I just wouldn't even bother with watercooling it though, I mean Vega 64 has already been pushed to its limits in the reference card considering it's 85W higher power consumption than Vega 56.

Now I remember why I didn't finish Gears 1: without much of a storyline it really overstays its welcome. It's great in small doses but gets so repetitive when you play your way through it for a while.

Most of the regular posters here have played Fallout 4. Those who have played previous titles tend to lean toward new vegas as being overall a better game story wise iirc. I've only played 4 though and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Just recently started playing it but probably won't again until I finish Uncharted

Unfortunately Vega 64 is ridiculously expensive at the moment thanks to miners.
Hoping to land an early 56 before they sell out. It's the better price/performance for the time being, it also works better with my system.

New Vegas is way better, especially when you factor in some of the epic DLC New Vegas has like Old World Blues, Honest Hearts, and Lonesome Road (Dead Money is horrifically bad though). Fallout 4 is a really good game but not an epic one like New Vegas IMO. New Vegas had some of the devs from the original two Fallout games from before Bethesda bought the series, and you can really see the older Fallouts in New Vegas with the customization options for weapons and ammo and just the overall better story. If you do get Fallout 4 the base game is solid, but the only DLC worth getting is Nuka World. If I had to rate the Fallout canon games in order, from best to worst, I would rank and score them:
1. Fallout 2 (10/10)
2. Fallout New Vegas (9.5/10)
3. Fallout 1 (8.5/10)
3. Fallout 3 (8.5/10)
5. Fallout 4 (8/10)

Well on my grading scale I'd consider 8/10 something highly worth buying, a really enjoyable game. From looking at reviews and previews if I guess a I would rank a game 9.5 or higher I buy it right that second for the full $60. If I expect it to be around a 9 I'll buy it once I find it for $50 or less. If I expect it to be an 8 I buy at $40. If I expect it to be a 7/10 I buy it at $25-$30. Of course I made that mistake with Fallout 4, I bought the game and the DLC right as I was finishing New Vegas since I was expecting a 9.5/10 game based on the E3 reveal. :lol Though I think I paid $70 instead of the $90 full price at least.

It's not just miners. AMD did a price increase they didn't tell any of their reviewers about. The $499 price tag on Vega 64 was only good for the first couple of days as a promotional price, thanks to a rebate they were offering retailers those first couple of days. I'm not sure they can make a profit selling Vega 64 at $499. It must be much more expensive to produce than the 1080 Ti is considering the cost of HMB2 and considering it's a larger die than GP102 from a much worse fab (GloFo is a fucking trainwreck compared to TSMC).

AMD said they are standing by the $499 and are looking into why prices have jumped. Mostly it seems to be due to demand + lack of stock but the MSRP will be $399 & $499 going forward according to official sources.

It looks and feels very similar because it was originally going to be DLC for Uncharted 4 until they decided to release it as a standalone title. When you get to chapter 3, it opens up into a nonlinear mission where you get to choose which order to do things.

Having just finished Horizon Zero Dawn the other day, I wanted to jump back into the Souls series, so I started playing Demon's Souls yesterday. Great game so far. The controls aren't as tight as in Bloodborne, but it's still pretty damn good. I guess that's just a thing with the Souls series, where you have to go through a first stage with a weak character before you can level up at all. Though that first stage is quite a bit easier in Demon's Souls than it was in Bloodborne, especially the boss fight. Maybe that's just what I have always heard from Souls players, that the first Souls game you play is always the hardest. It definitely seems to have aged pretty well considering this game was released in 2009.
Has this thread title always said "whar"? I've never noticed it until today.

Yeah, they weren't competing well with Nvidia even when their gpus were better in the HD 4000, HD 7000, and R9 200 series. And now Nvidia has just smoked them ever since Maxwell. Ryzen has put some serious fear into Intel though, as in Coffee Lake's upcoming desktop line the current quadcore i5 are being moved to the i3 line, the i5 is going to six cores, and the consumer grade i7 is going to six cores with hyperthreading.

The difficulty of the Souls games is very overhyped. They're nowhere near as hard as say the Mega Man games from NES for example. The one really hard thing in Bloodborne is the very beginning, when you're thrown into Central Yharnam without knowing what to do. So early on I was just killing enemies and running back to buy armor and shit with their blood echoes, which was a waste because armor doesn't really matter in the game. Just wear whatever looks best to you. But I couldn't level up, and the first couple of hours I played were really frustrating because of that. So I went online and found out you have to gain one point of insight to be able to level up. You can get a point of insight by finding a Madman's Knowledge in the first level (I think there are three of them in the level) but the easiest way is to make it towards the boss. He'll kill you pretty quickly most likely, but you get a point of insight from dying to him and then you're allowed to start leveling up. That's when the game starts becoming reasonable. So if I would have just ran to that first boss I wouldn't have wasted those first couple of hours of gameplay.
baseline bum
09-02-2017, 11:06 AM
After that Bloodborne is still hard enough that you'll get killed every time you let multiple enemies attack at once and you have to take every single fight seriously, but it's not cheap. You die because you did something stupid, not because say your jump was two pixels too short like in the old NES games where the difficulty came a lot from cheapness.

Now I remember why I didn't finish Gears 1: without much of a storyline it really overstays its welcome. It's great in small doses but gets so repetitive when you play your way through it for a while.
Gears is meant to be played coop with friends. I see it as almost a successor to games like Contra. Weak on storyline, but fun gameplay as long as you are working with somebody.
The cooperative mode is a casualty of games becoming bigger and more complex, but I miss playing games like that via LAN with friends.

MegaMan is stupid hard, though. As in you can win just based on finding the one pattern that works. It's a platformer with bullet hell properties.
The reason dark souls is hailed as being *so* difficult is how they built in the learning curve with the difficulty. Bosses force you to try new tactics and really gauge distances. There's not a lot of active learning in MegaMan games - it's just trial and error until you find out "oh hey Woodman does in 3 hits to metalman's weapon."
Dark souls is an experience that's much more about learning the nuances of combat, especially if you don't use a guide on every boss to win.
I AM thinking about getting Nioh though. That game has a nice balance.

Nioh is alright, but it's not in the class of Bloodborne or Dark Souls 1. It's not even as good as Demon's Souls IMO. I wasn't that into the story either. Some Scottish guy becomes the top samurai in Japan?

Man you really gotta get Bloodborne plus its DLC if you like Dark Souls boss fights. This one boss (initials are OOK for anyone who has played Bloodborne) is way harder to come up with a winning strategy against than say Ornstein & Smough if you have played DS1.

Ubisoft said they were told the difficulty of the game affects the amount of money you receive and the way other characters speak to you throughout the course of the game.
During the difficulty selection Eric Cartman will comment: "Don't worry, this doesn't affect combat. Just every other aspect of your whole life."

Oh man, it looks like Okami is getting a port to PC/XB1/PS4. I highly recommend this game. Any somewhat modern PC should kill this game at 60 fps considering the lowly PS3 could render it at 4k at a locked 30 fps. I can't wait to see this game at 60 fps. It's like a more Japanese Zelda, though Amaterasu is a much better main character than faggy Link. It has such an awesome art style to look like a watercolor painting and is a game I will definitely be playing again when it gets a PC launch.

Okami HD spotted for PC, PS4, Xbox One
Time to let the dog out.
By Tom Phillips Published 08/09/2017
Artful adventure Okami looks set to make a return on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.
That's according to a listing on the ever-reliable Korean Ratings Board (via Gematsu), which regularly leaks upcoming announcements.
Okami originally launched for PlayStation 2 back in 2006, before ports for Wii in 2008 and then PS3 in 2012. It was critically-acclaimed for its painterly cel-shaded design and for lovable wolf protagonist Amaterasu.
This latest edition is again listed as HD, just as the PS3 version was five years ago. Perhaps this will be even more HDer?
"Buy it anyway," Oli wrote of Okami's 2012 re-release. "It's a classic game and an essential part of any collection, especially in this flawless, gorgeous reissue."

TBH, I bought them for the PS3 when they first came out a few years ago. Cant speak for how they look on the PS4.
But I do have the final mix which has Dream Drop Distance and it looks pretty crisp and that game was from the Nintendo 3DS. :lol

It's fucking with me because I never noticed it until the other day.
That same day, I saw my thread titled, "Racist Davis Carr" in the NFL Forum. And I was pretty sure I had spelled it right originally.
So I was debating whether or not it was the Mandela Effect. My second thought was that a mod was subtlety fucking with me. But that seemed pretty paranoid.
Then I forgot all about it until you guys brought it back up. Now I have to go through the thought process again.

After watching some gameplay videos, I think I'm going to pass on Kingdom Hearts for PS4. The blocky geometry just looks too weird on PS4 with high resolution textures and texture filtering, and I think I'd rather play the game on the PCSX2 emulator and maybe force some AA through the Nvidia Control Panel.

they still haven't addressed the fact that every encounter mostly comes down to who ran into who's line of sight. and with all the crazy weapons and abilities, cover and flanking hardly matter anymore, when you encounter a group of enemies, they better not survive the turn to even take a shot at you.
it was pretty fun/satisfying in the end though, the extra abilities you can add to your favorite soldiers really make them overpowered, my two snipers just mowed down that final mission..

If you're targeting 60 fps there is no reason to upgrade your cpu. Now if you have a GSync monitor or a 144 Hz monitor and are willing to pay for the gpu to drive those kind of framerates you should grab an i7-8700k or i5-8600k when they launch.

IDK man, 2k18 seems like the exact kind of game that wouldn't work on portables. Scaling big console games to a small screen is why I thought PSP sucked. I think I'd buy a Switch for playing BOTW, Super Mario Odyssey, and Bayonetta 2 on the big screen and then smaller indie games as well as old school 2D games for portable. I was extremely impressed playing Zelda BOTW on the big screen with my brother's Switch but wasn't feeling it in handheld mode. 2k would probably be the same for me. Now Tecmo Super Bowl or NHL 94 in handheld mode would be incredible.

This processor sucks balls on a lot of games now.. I've been testing the performance of games that I get occasional stutter from, example being GTA V and Witcher 3 among others, and it's the CPU spiking up to 100% that's causing it.. It's time for an upgrade.

Super Mario Odyssey is only about a month away, and here’s a friendly reminder that if you have Amazon Prime, you can preorder it for $12 off (discount shown at checkout). This deal is valid up until release day, but Amazon’s been known to sell out of preorders of popular Nintendo games in the past, so it might behoove you to place your order early.

I'm playing the first one since I wanted to jump into the series and I'm having trouble getting into this kind of RPG game. The style just seems so antiquated but that's my fault I guess.
