The Shenmue collection is a glitchy mess. I haven't been able to play that since I bought it. They are working on a patch to fix all the major issues but is taking longer than expected.

The PC version already fix theirs.

I'm going to start Dreamfall Chapters fairly soon.

Everything I'm hearing about this game is superb. But the announcing and the consequent DLC trailer reveal turns me off honestly.

Depending on how much I enjoy the game, I might get it for completion sake but I really hate this practice.

It seems pretty recent. I wonder if it's the dotard tariff getting Sony to put the brakes on production. Extremely doubtful they make any profit selling the PS4 Pro at $400 and a 25% tariff on all their boards, power supplies, capacitors, and such is going to really put them in the red. At least the chips themselves don't come from China, they're likely from Singapore this gen with GloFo and will be from Taiwan next gen with AMD moving to TSMC for 7nm production.

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne is fucking hard. The later bosses are such wars of attrition and take so much setup to be able to get a clean and strong attack against. I can see why SMT fans consider Persona players to be casuals. This game feels like a turn based RPG equivalent to Bloodborne.

Spiderman PS4.

9.5/10 for me.

Minus 0.5 because the boss battlers are decent but depending on boss, the game doesnt force you to use your complete arsenal. Sometimes a move or two is enough which makes upgrading stupid

CODEX has shown they can crack Denuvo 4.9 based on an updated version of Shadow of War they released a couple of days ago, so I imagine they'll start releasing new shit again once the heavy hitters for this year like AC Odyssey, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Hitman 2 come out. Also 2k never puts any DRM other than Steam's DRM on their NBA 2k games, so you knew that would be a Day 0 release.

but basically looks like a remaster/upgrade to Spiderman 2 (PS2) which imo is the best spiderman video game ever made. if i ever got around to buying a ps4 i'd look into this

edit: of course i immediately jump to google and read this

When I asked Intihar if Insomniac referenced previous Spider-Man titles when making this game, he responded with a resounding yes. The creative director cited Activision's 2004 Spider-Man 2 game as a particularly big inspiration, as that title laid the groundwork for what an open-world Spidey experience could be. "That's the [first] game that really made you feel like Spider-Man," said Intihar. "We played a lot of those [games] and did research on what people liked and wanted to see improved."

The Mega Drive Classic is made by a crap company called AtGames. The controllers are terrible, the sound quality is way off, and the emulation is bad. Too bad Sega doesn't do one themselves that actually respects the amazing library the Genesis/Megadrive has. The Neo Geo looks like shit with that tiny screen and who wants a bunch of fighting games? The NES Classic is awesome but you can dual boot the NES Classic on an SNES Classic, plus you get two controllers with more buttons and much longer cords in addition to being able to play SNES games. The SNES Classic is by far the best of the four you listed. However, the Raspberry Pi is probably the best solution if you don't mind a lot of tinkering, since you can play the following systems really well on it:

* NES
* SNES
* Playstation
* Famicom Disk System
* Genesis / Mega Drive
* Sega Master System
* Neo Geo arcade
* MAME arcade
* Atari 2600/5200/7800
* Commodore 64
* Apple ][
* DOS
* Amiga
* PC Engine / TurboGrafx 16
* Virtual Boy
* TI-99/4A

I heard you can play Nintendo DS games on the Raspberry Pi also, but I never tried it. Retropie is really a jack of all trades for gaming on SNES generation and older (with Playstation thrown in as well).

I'm getting tempted by the Switch. Right now there are four games I'm interested in on the system: Super Mario Odyssey, Project Octopath Traveler, Bayonetta 2, and The World Ends With You Remix. But the Tokyo Game Show next week might determine whether I buy a Switch in the next six months. Because I'm hoping we get a flood of JRPG on it soon like we have on 3DS (which is a fucking amazing handheld because of this huge Japanese game library). On 3DS you have five killer Shin Megami Tensei games, two great Bravely games, I think three Fire Emblems, and so on. But the big one for me is Shin Megami Tensei V. If I don't have a Switch the day that launches I'll probably buy one just for it. Also I think there is a Nintendo Direct today at 5PM CST. Hopefully it's not more indie crap or Smash Bros.

Another thing that would get me to jump on Switch immediately would be if Atlus ported Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 FES to the Switch at 1080p, since P4G doesn't look great on Playstation TV at 492p and since P3 FES is 4:3 aspect ratio being a PS2 game. I could see it happening now that Sega owns Atlus and with how much Sega loves publishing games on Nintendo consoles.

The Switch is so fucking awesome. There are so many details that went into it's creation -- Nintendo clearly made it for gamers and listened to a lot of feedback. Everything is so well thought out and fast. It's super pleasing to be able to just hit "power" and go. I know the DS had that but they aren't even in the same league of systems. I don't feel like I'm compromising with a Switch. When I pop the controllers off I can fit it into my pocket, which makes it even more portable than the OG DS.

HIGHLY recommend Dead Cells and Hollow Knight both btw, if you haven't played them. Super fun and very challenging.

I disagree with you on 900 vs 1000 series. 900 series was awesome since they got big performance gains on the same 28 nm node as the 600/700 series while cutting the price down pretty significantly from Kepler. Pascal was just Nvidia piggybacking off TSMC's node shrink to 14 nm and all the cards got big price increases. Kepler and Pascal tried to make GeForce buyers pay for compute while Maxwell was pretty much just gaming cards. Now Nvidia took it to the extreme with the 2000 series though making gamers pay for hardware designed for their Quadro cards. Hopefully Navi will be decent because I'm not paying $600 for fucking midrange Nvidia cards.

amd needs to focus on achieving 4k 60fps or higher....

i think nvidia give the rtx that new price range, due to wanting to get rid of that existing 1000 series stock, till they start to decrease the rtx range...currently there is no competition so they can do whatever they want...

We can review the individual cards if you want.

960: Nothing special. Not great performance. Expensive and hot in laptops for the m variant as well.

970: Complete trainwreck for months thanks to the onboard memory debacle.

980: Solid card but hot and heavy.

The AMD 290/290x was the best card of the entire generation, which is why I think Nvidias offerings weren't very good. They came out a year before the 900 series, completely destroyed the 7xx cards especially as they aged, and then actually ended up being faster than the 900s except for the 980ti.

10xx was brilliant though, AMD had no answer as they were pushing the CPUs, and fitting the desktop variants into a laptop config was a stroke of genius. I'm typing this from a laptop with a 1050ti and it's just a marvelous card. Lightweight laptop under 5 pounds, gets 6 hours of battery life, and can play Witcher 3 on high with no problems. For $620 that is a damn steal.

960: Complete dogshit, one of the worst cards ever put out in that price bracket. Too bad AMD's card was terrible too, the R9 285. They should have just stuck with the awesome R9 280 instead. Though I imagine 2060 will be much worse than even 960.

970: They lied like hell about the memory architecture but the thing could still overclock to 980 performance.

980: Overpriced IMO.

980 Ti: A card that monstered everything else on the market and aftermarket models could often be overclocked to 1080 level performance

1000 series is when Nvidia started their monopoly pricing. Eg jacking up 70 series price from $330 to $450 and 80 series from $550 to $700.

Is it as good as TR2013 or ROTR?

hard to make that choice since i havent completed it. TR2013 was great. i fuckin loved ROTR. this is a bit different for me as i always play on hard, and that removes any senses or hints so i'm probably missing tombs and shit which is why it doesnt seem like ive found any. but i feel like this one focuses on the ambiance of the jungle a lot more. they definitely added more ways to stealth kill which is great because i love that. gunplay is meh, bows are fun but the guns are fairly bland, but im more of a stealth player so it doesnt matter. this game also introduces merchants and being able to purchase normal items in various places, which is cool because you can just buy salvage to upgrade your shit instead of having to find it, if you wanna upgrade something quick.

at this point whether or not its as good for me as the previous titles, will depend on how long it is and how epic the creatures are when i finally find them

I thought you said the 900 series was good? You kinda smashed em with that review. Also the 980/ti were super hot cards.

The 970 offered 780 Ti performance at $330 so was an absolute killer card despite the lies from Nvidia about the memory architecture. The 1070 was a bigger jump over the 970 than the 970 was over the 770 (~60% vs ~40%), but they also jacked the price way up to $450 and that big jump was to be expected with the node shrink to 14nm from 28nm. I don't get complaint about the heat generated by the 980 Ti after you were propping the R9 290x considering the 980 Ti was a way stronger gpu and consumed significantly less power than the R9 290x. As pissed as I was about Nvidia lying about the 970's memory this year is the first time I have seriously considered replacing it. But I'll wait to see what Navi brings in late 2019 / early 2020 thanks to Nvidia's faggotry with Turing.

I can't justify spending $600 on a gpu this gen. Fucking 70 series jumping to 80 Ti prices is ridiculous, especially when the $1200 2080 Ti is only pulling 30-50 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p with RT turned on. I can't see the point of being such an early adopter for a tech that's years away.

Damn the usual TR feels like a clone of Uncharted. I gotta play AC Origins. I was holding off on it waiting to do a gpu upgrade with Turing, but that's out of the question now with the 2070 being a $600 midrange card. I tell you, my 960 is still rocking, and the 970 at work too. I know some people are very picky about 60fps, and I'd love to have 60fps lock at 4k, but the reality is 30fps will give you a great experience (non-VR), and shader work is way more important for better gfx. I'm currently working on an exclusive game that has such amazing gfx. I can't even believe the PS4 still holds up to run this thing. And sure, when and if better hardware comes around, it'll look even better and nicer, but I'm still surprised daily on the kind of stuff you can still pull off with that generation (PS4 level, Maxwell). Obviously, this is the end of the road for those chips, but looking back the jump from Kepler to Maxwell was pretty massive.

I still don't see a major need to upgrade either, these cards support DX12, and run pretty much everything. Maybe in a year or so, we'll get some monster new games that up the ante, but right now, I'm pretty happy the run I've got for my money off them.

60 fps is night and day better to me than 30 fps. I don't care much about resolution, it really feels like diminishing returns since I mostly play games on the couch on my TV whether console or PC which minimizes the impact of the greater pixel density since I'm not a foot away from the screen like if I gamed at my desk. I wish dynamic resolution was a thing on PC outside of DLSS on these ridiculously overpriced Turing cards. I greatly preferred playing Nioh at 60 fps with dynamic resolution (but mostly at 720p) on my PS4 vs the 1080p30 mode and wish I could use dynamic resolution on games like Final Fantasy XV that are extremely punishing to everything out there. What I want out of a gpu is something that will be able to play 1080p high at 60 fps locked for 3-4 years. Eg I want double console performance since console settings are usually equivalent to PC high settings, which is why I'm willing to pay around the price of a console for my gpu alone. But I'm not going to ever pay double console price for a graphics card.

Obviously I can play 30 fps and enjoy it or I wouldn't have a PS4, but my 970 is starting to enter a no man's land where it's way too powerful for 30 fps but not quite enough for 60 fps at high. Being just a little under that 60 fps threshold adds pretty noticeable stuttering with VSync on, which is the only way I play my PC games since adaptive VSync adds tear lines near the top of the image and having no sync period looks horrific IMO. The only real advantage to me for PC gaming is running at 60 fps. I guess you could point to piracy too, but multiplats tend to go on sale for $20 to $30 pretty quickly on PS4 so it's not that big IMO.

It really depends on the game, honestly. 30fps looks WAY worse when it's moving an entire world/scope around your character. Not terrible for an RPG with a limited camera sweep. Way worse for a game like GTA or Zelda or any FPS.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 is pretty cool so far, except for this one RTS mini game in it. Playing an RTS with a controller fucking sucks. I have also been playing Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey redux on my 3DS. The battle system and difficulty is watered down a bit from mainline Shin Megami Tensei games, but it's still probably a 7/10 or 8/10 and worth playing.

LMAO. In Yakuza Kiwami 2 you can buy videotapes to learn new fighting moves, and one of them is a movie with Segata Sanjiro. It's funny because Kiwami 2 takes place in 1995 which is right in the middle of the Sega Saturn generation where Sega made a character called Segata Sanshiro for its Saturn commercials.

Been playing ac origins... The scale and setting are awesome but really, the combat and writing are pretty bad. If it doesn't improve soon I don't think I'll finish

I find it funny they put in a feature to let the horses drive themselves... On one hand it's practical to take a little break between quests, on the other hand the AI is terrible at finding a path and it just feels weird that a game will encourage you to watch it play itself

I saw a couple of hours of gameplay of it to convince myself to get it but ultimately decided against it because the voice acting just took me out of it. Third string voice actors ruining the experience.

There isn't enough of a change from Origins to this game. They're fairly similar in play style and story. The length of Odyssey really plays no part on making this game a get or not for me.

Sometimes less is more.

Your stats like knowledge and charisma increase pretty slowly and the menu will only show when it goes up one full level (I think there are five levels for each of those stats). I forget where in the menu it is, but the status screen looks like this:

Those stats indirectly help combat by allowing you to advance through your real-world relationships, which unlock different abilities and combat moves as you level the relationships up. I don't think it's possible to max everybody out as there are a lot of playable and non-playable characters that want to spend time with you at different stages in the game. So you might want to look up who provides what abilities and plan your time wisely.

FWIW, this game nearly killed video games for me. 120+ hours to complete a fairly linear single player game (and I don't feel like I was spending an excessive amount of time doing side quests and stuff) was just too much. The only thing that kept me going was the combat, which I really enjoyed. But there are blocks of hours where you are trapped in dialogue loops and the only breaks you get are when you're standing in your bedroom, and literally your only two options are to save the game or go to bed (which starts the next day into dialogue hell).

I had to take a break from games for a few months after I beat P5.

Its weird how combat is the reason why we keep on coming back. That never haapens in jrpg. A testment to how good the combat is.

I wonder with more budget if they'd be able to open up the game and provide more freedom. This is the most linear JRPG ive played ever. 80% of the time, the game gives you very limited options on what to do specially in the first couple palaces

The only real freedom you're given is while you have an active palace ongoing. Then you basically have two blocks of time after school to level up stats or spend time with somebody. Going to mementos or the palace eliminates that time for the day.

If you like the combat but hate all the side stuff the Shin Megami Tensei series might be something you'd enjoy more. It's the series Persona was split off from and has a similar (though superior IMO) battle system. They're pretty hardcore dungeon crawlers with much more difficult combat than the Persona games and none of the life sim / dating sim stuff. Plus minimal use of cutscenes and none of the long sequences of dialogue (as much as I love Persona I fucking hate the class trips that are 45 minutes of pressing X to get through the dialogue). The new one is a Switch exclusive that we won't see until 2019 or 2020 most likely. It only has a short reveal trailer so far:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TepXZN3Pw8o

I think the best game in the series is Nocturne on PS2 (though you can also buy it off PSN if you have a PS3).

Well you might still get a real kick out of Shin Megami Tensei games if you're into the combat. Persona games all have those kind of dragging story moments (at least since the PS2 and newer). In the Persona games you can always get away with making simple offensive minded character builds but you'll get wrecked in the Shin Megami Tensei games without good team design around buffs and debuffs. I like that you can't level your way out of shit in it either. In SMT IV even at level 99 with level 99 teammates you'll get routinely destroyed by all bosses in the last third of the game if you don't build a team with good and complementary buffs and debuffs.

Will check it out if the opportunity comes up. Having to use strategy and plan out these long boss battles is one of the things I used to enjoy with turn-based JRPGs (have mostly only played western RPGs in over a decade). Even though I like P5's combat, the boss battles were nothing to write home about. They just basically all had a ton of health and you'd have to find out their resistances. That's about it.

Morgana is annoying as fuck, true. Persona games (at least since 3) are heavily about time management. It's impossible to 100% the game on a first playthrough anyways, so I wouldn't worry too much about not being able to do things after combat. There actually is one way to still do things after spending time in a palace or mementos, but it'll be a major spoiler if I tell you how. If you want to know I'll post it though.

You can dual boot with NES Classic and add NES games too. The internals are exactly the same on the NES and SNES Classics. You can also use NES Classic controllers with the SNES Classic, though the cable length is only 2.5 feet on the NES Classic controller. Still, they're only $10 and then 6 to 10 foot extensions will run you another $10 or so. You can actually put the Famicom Mini OS on too and get the Japenese versions of Zelda and Metroid with better music as well as the Japanese version of Zelda II which has some real differences to the US version.

I like the look of the CRT filter (especially the one on the NES Classic), but I can feel it adding input lag so I turn it off.

Oh well I'll get RDR2 this week and I bet God of War will be somewhere for $20 in a month since Sony just dropped its MSRP to $39.99. When Todd Howard said "you create your own stories in Fallout 76" at E3 I knew this game wasn't for me. The whole point of Fallout games is the storytelling IMO. I'll probably buy and preload the game tomorrow as I'm starting to prefer digital to physical when they're the same price. I normally take them as long-plays, since I'm swamped with work, but didn't really expect this AC to be this big. It's actually good news.

I haven't even looked at them. I probably won't even read or watch the reviews as I want no spoilers. I'll probably buy and preload the game tomorrow as I'm starting to prefer digital to physical when they're the same price. Only games where I like physical are the Yakuza games since they have steelbooks with awesome artwork (though the art book from the physical release of Yakuza 6 sucks so I might buy that one digital).

Not a big fan of digital anything unless it's a free game from ps plus...the trailers are relatively spoiler free fwiw

Dude it loses to the 1060 6GB at 1440p in the Final Fantasy XV benchmark. Where are you seeing between 1070 and 1080 performance?

Welp the benefit of buying games through the PS store is gone.

Just got an email from Sony saying they will start collection state taxes from every purchase made online. Very shitty.

A great way to save money. No incentive to buy from the store anymore. If I'm paying 60+ taxes then I rather actually get the physical copy of the game.

PS Store still has good enough sales that it can beat physical sometimes. Plus I prefer having digital copies of games if they're the same price or lower unless the physical version has amazing artwork or something (eg the Yakuza steelbooks).

Yeah I played a little on Yuzu and it's really impressive how fast this emulator is coming along, but it still has a ton of graphical bugs in SMO and the framerate is lousy. It'll be amazing within a couple of years I bet though. If you don't want to wait CFW is doable on Switch if you get a model manufactured before July 2018. You can tell by the serial number, which is posted on the box. Plus the bug is in hardware so Nintendo can't fix it through firmware updates, and you can keep updating your firmware as new games come along. Unlike say PS4 where you're stuck on 5.05 if you want CFW (last game to come out on 5.05 was God of War back in April).

You checked out Cemu yet? Cemu 1.14.x gives you the best way to play Breath of the Wild if you have a strong cpu. With an i7-8700k overclocked you can run that game at 60 fps pretty much locked and also at 1080p/1440p/4k depending on gpu. Both the Switch and Wii U versions of the game run at 30 fps and can't lock there.

WTF how do you barely play PS4 when you're here talking about it all the time?

I talk about certain games, not all.

I still buy most exclusive games but I don’t play them right away. For example, Nier and P5 are still yet to be finished by me.

I’ve played about oh 3-4 hours of each. Basically I install and test how good the games are and then I leave them for later. My game backlog is in the 40s at the moment with triple A games and digital combined.

I finished Uncharted 4 just a few months ago. :lol

When I play a game I play for them plats so I’m kind of meticulous like that.

Fuck yes. Though you should get Yakuza 0 and play it first since Kiwami is the direct sequel. Yakuza 0 is on sale for $15.99 right now for PS Plus members on PSN. They're both great games. Think of a modern day Streets of Rage with some Japanese humor thrown in. Like an open world beat 'em up with lots of comedy mixed in. Here is one mission from Yakuza 0 that killed me:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Y0m-DnOdms

If you find you like 0 & Kiwami 1 there is Kiwami 2 already out plus announced remasters for 3-5 and then 6 is already out on PS4 in the US. Plus these games seem to drop in price quickly. Yakuza 6 is already pretty easy to find for $35.

I have platted God of War 1, 3 and 4. For some reason I never finished the challenges in the second game despite the fact you can actually save after each. if i go back I can probably get it since I have gotten way better at these types of games now.
