Man the honor level kills me in RDR2. I just found a gold prospector, waited for him to find some gold, once he did hogtied him, robbed him, and drowned him in the river and still my honor level is really high because I greet everyone friendly on the road. I have 3/4 a full honor bar despite murdering everyone who says anything bad to me and also robbing every house I come by (and killing everyone inside). :lol

These games should drop the Assassin's Creed part. Latest games have nothing to do with the mythos of the early games save for the animus.

This latest game is an even worse offender on that front.

LOL the sidestories in RDR2. Went up on this one house and this fat bastard keeps insisting I come in for a meal, then his sister starts hitting on me. Sounded fishy so I hogtied her, took big bro down with the sawed off, robbed them both, then was about to drown her but when I dumped her in the water an alligator killed her instead. They drug you and rob you if you eat dinner with them, then you wake up in a mass grave with no cash. Either way, the couple dies if you want to keep your money. :lol

I believe you get more money if you let it play out though, because you'll have to get their stash to get your money back. It's a funny, but twisted random encounter. I think the insinuation is that they killed their parents because they disapproved of their incestuous relationship.

said fuck it and decided to pick up Valhalla...

pretty fun so far. from what i can tell it has removed one of the more annoying features in the recent games, having to do side quests to level up to do main quests, so that's a huge plus because i always hated that. map is huge as always. the opening was good and the main story line has been entertaining thus far, so i havent done many sidequests yet. i like the feature of having a settlement and being able to raid with you crew to supplies. only about 6 hours in so plenty of time to change opinion but so far its been enjoyable

Been playing subnautica and subnautica absolute zero (sequel).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subnautica
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6d/Subnautica_cover_art.png

You can finish either with not a huge investment in time, both have some fun mechanics, the graphics can be very beautiful, and the story is halfway interesting. Solid 7 if you like survival games.

Sequel is still in development, so is a bit buggy, but just as good, with a lot more to explore.

Fun colony simulator from Paradox Games, who I have become a fan of.

Lots of replay value as you try out different strategies and you can ratchet the difficulty up to some insane levels.

They also offer a lot of storylines that make for more replay, such as "what if there is a huge war on earth" or something similar.

Solid 8 for simulators.

Creepy first person survival game. picture above is the stewardess on the plane you are on that crashes. (mild spoiler, but it is revealed in the first minute of the game, so deal with it)

Fun: killing some of the endless supply of cannibals and making armor out of their bones.

Fairly well developed story arc. Game play is a bit simplistic, and they go in for gore a bit here and there.

Map is a bit limited, but fits game well, with lots to explore.

Solid 6. if you like creepy games, add a point to that. fun for building things, if a bit grindy when it comes to gathering materials for anything really cool.

Bugs aren't game breaking or anything. Just your usual Ubisoft fuckery with characters not respecting boundaries. Walking past walls, NPCs teleporting everywhere while you're having a conversation with someone etc.

It's more about the immersion aspect.

Funny enough watching anime and making flash cards (not real flash cards but anki virtual flash cards) are my main way to study right now. Mostly because my listening is shit and my ability to process the language in real time sucks. I read Japanese like a slow second grader having to sound things out so even with Japanese subs on anime is still really tough for me. But only way to get good at it is to keep struggling with it and more and more makes sense, but very slowly. Three main anime I watch right now are からかい上手の高木さん (Teasing Master Takagi San), しろくまカフェ (Polar Bear Cafe), and old-school Pokemon since the language is reasonably simple, especially in Polar Bear Cafe. Stuff like 食戟のソーマ (Food Wars) aimed at older teens and above is way too difficult of language for me to follow well though right now. Hopefully in a year I'll be able to watch that show and follow it at some decent level of comprehension.

Kind of tempted to pull the trigger on Judgment for $20 as I'm an enormous fan of the Yakuza series, but I know the second I buy it Sega is going to announce it for PC where I can play at 60 fps and have access to both the Japanese and English versions of the game. It's too bad they don't have Yakuza 0 on sale right now. Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza Kiwami 2, and Yakuza 6 are on sale for amazing prices, but that series really should be played in order from 0 to 6 because the stories build right on top of each other.

Sekiro is much more a stealth game but if you like Soulsborne games you should like it too. For $25 at Best Buy right now it's a must buy. The only thing I'd say is if you're considering getting a PS5 any time soon, you can play Sekiro at 1080p 60fps on PS5 vs 30 fps on PS4. Though I guess you'd have to get the disc version of the PS5 if you want to take advantage of that Sekiro deal. Sekiro digital on PSN never seems to go below $38.

Ugh took me about two minutes to find a 3-star raccoon by the oil derrick when I started trying to find badgers. Then I thought the panther would take forever but I literally found and killed a 3-star one within 90 seconds of looking when I went south from the manor after no badgers spawned there. Where along Kamassa River, are you getting badgers spawning? The badger icon on the map is in the middle of someone's farm. Should I be right at the water? Because I only see gators when I do that.

So that repeater was pretty badass from the beginning against cougars. Only seen one panther in the game but I lit him up from afar with a Springfield and took his perfect pelt.

Astro's Playroom is included for free and really good, especially for younger kids (tho it's fun for adults too if you like Mario-style games).

Then it depends the kind of games you like:

- Spiderman Miles Morales is good if you liked the first Spiderman. If you never played it before, it might be worthwhile to pick up the edition that comes with the remastered first game too.

- For a grinder, there's no beating Demon's Souls. Looks great and the game is excellent. It's a grind though.

- Again, if you have kids, Sackboy is another fine platformer.

I've also played Watchdogs Legion, COD Black Ops Cold War and AC Valhalla, and while they're fine games, there's nothing super revolutionary that showcases the console that much.

There's also a bunch of fairly solid titles coming in the next few months.

So what's the best PS1 emulator and can I run it on a PI 4?

Just use RetroPie. The default PS1 emulator in RetroPie was great on the Pi 3B, so must really run well on the Pi 4. Only annoying thing is you'll have to setup your controller for analog vs digital control per game, as some games require digital and others analog.

baseline bum
12-07-2020, 12:25 PM
So what's the best PS1 emulator and can I run it on a PI 4?

Though if you haven't bought the Pi 4 you might just consider buying a used FAT PS3, because you can hack the system and run PS1 games perfectly on it. You can put custom firmware on some Slim PS3 also, but it's only guaranteed on CECH-20xx and CECH-21xx models of PS3 Slim. Some CECH-25xx PS3 Slim can be hacked, some can't. But CECH-21xx and below and Fat models can all have CFW put on them.

Note there are only two models of Fat PS3 that can play PS2 games perfectly (in hardware), though a hacked PS3 can still play a lot of them well (in software).

But used Fat PS3 (or maybe even used CECH-20xx or CECH-21xx Slim PS3) would probably come out cheaper once you factor in the cost of adding a case, microSD, power supply, and especially controller to the Pi 4.

You gotta be fast though because otherwise they'll get claimed by these guys that will probably wreck you early on in the game if you fight them. the drone challenges and screwball challenges in Spiderman PS4 were a grind, but swinging/zipping around was more enjoyable than the free running/climbing.

It's a Dynasty Warriors type of game. I only played the first hour or so (thanks to having a hacked Switch :lol) and the gameplay was pretty good. Can't really comment on the graphics because Switch graphics are pretty shit for third party games, but the art style and animations felt like they absolutely nailed them. Never got much farther than that hour or so in though, because the Japanese is quite above my reading level right now.

Thank god this one is coming to PC at launch so I can buy one version of the game and be able to play it in either English or Japanese, as it'll probably make decent study material to do a second playthrough in Japanese after I understand the story first in English. I hate that almost all PS4 games won't let you switch between English and Japanese subtitles and UI. Only game I have on PS4 that lets you is NieR Automata.

Other than being a completionist, there's not a lot of point. I found it fairly easy, because if you use the correct lure and are standing in the right spot, it's almost a guaranteed bite. This might be a minor spoiler, but I don't think the quest line was completed by Rockstar anyway. The final legendary fish (after you catch all the others), has no working skin in the game files and is not interactable. You are led to a specific spot and given some special lure, but it's impossible to catch the fish.

There's a few examples of that in the game. There's a poster in Van Horn that you can take off the wall talking about a missing princess with a $100 reward for finding her whereabouts. There are clues and little lines of dialogue in and around town, but that's it. The princess has a character skin in the game files, but she isn't actually in the game anywhere.

You have to figure with a game this massive, a lot of content had to be cut just so they could finish it.

Of all the collection style quests, the rock carvings and the legendary hunts are probably the best. The hunts obviously give you trinkets, but the rock carving one is pretty easy to complete and has a really cool scene after you turn it in (I believe there's also a trinket ingredient inside that dude's house).

The other quests, like the fish or the dinosaur bones, are just time wasters.

You're not going to see shit. Every year they hype these awards like you're going to see a bunch of amazing reveals and every year it is 95% indie crap and then a remaster of a good game thrown in. Completion rate increases a lot from main story missions, barely at all from side missions. I have been playing it for a month and a half, probably around 200 hours so far, and my completion rate is like 46% right now. The side missions are great, you shouldn't rush through the main story because you lose the ability to do some side missions. Plus I like doing the home robberies and wiping out the gangs I don't like.

Dead eye is L3 + R3. What's funny about dead eye is the three main characters in GTA V all have a version of it, seemingly implying all three are descendants of John or Arthur. Dead eye is super useful for big firefights and for hunting. I think I'd have had a really hard time surviving one of the firefights in Chapter 3 without it.

As for fighting: lock on to the enemy by holding L1, use square for block, circle for punch. Or whatever the XBox controller equivalents are, I forget.

Stop your horse with R1.

Another hint to keep from crashing on your horse: when you're running through say a forest or something, if you release control of the thumbsticks the horse will avoid crashing into trees on its own. Doesn't work for people or wagons you'd like to dodge, not sure about rocks, but it ensures you'll never plow into a tree even if you're going full speed through a dense forest.

I really only try to learn songs from anime and games right now since I know I'm going to hear them all the time. Like right now I'm trying to memorize this song 言わないけどね (I won't say it, but (right?)) from this anime called からかい上手の高木さん (Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san, called Teasing Master Takagi-san in the US) that I have been watching lately. It's a little above my level since it's about 12-13 year-olds and I do better with stuff like しろくまカフェ (Shirokuma Cafe, or Polar Bear Cafe in English) targeted at say 9 year-olds. But it's funny and the writing is good. Here's the song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zORYdnt1XFE

Though I'll occasionally try to learn a song unrelated to anime / games if it's kind of easy and famous, like this huge hit from the 1960s called 上を向いて歩こう = ue wo muite arukou = look up when you walk.

Crap, Bloodborne with the DLC was $15 in the sale right before this one, and the DLC is must buy, best part of the game by far.

The only difference between the $35 deluxe edition and $30 regular edition of Persona 5 Royal is the deluxe edition comes with the Kasumi costumes for the other Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games. Eg say you like having your party wear the Gekkoukan High costumes in palaces / mementos so you can hear the battle theme Mass Destruction from Persona 3. You'd need the deluxe edition if you want Kasumi to have that costume too. Though the battle theme that plays depends only on what costume Joker is wearing. Also any version of P5R comes with all the DLC from P5.

Don't buy the normal Persona 5. I'd pay $30 and play Persona 5 Royal before I'd play Persona 5 for $0. Not only do you get the extra month and change plus new palace in Royal, but Morgana doesn't make you go to sleep all the time at night anymore. That alone largely gets rid of the time crunch you experience in regular Persona 5. You get more interaction with the Velvet Room twins, and they're hilarious. In negotiation with enemy personas Morgana now gives you hints how to approach them so you're not constantly looking at your phone to see what do I say to a Gloomy persona or how do I negotiate with an Irritable persona. There is another part of the city called Kichijoji with lots of extra shit to do, like ways to significantly up your SP, up the stats of your teammates, or customize their skills more. The story of the game is also better flushed out IMO with the new characters added, especially Akechi's story. Oh and you also get two more optional boss fights in Royal in addition to the extra boss fight from the new palace. And it's easier to fuse personas how you like since the fusion accidents can now be forced as opposed to being random.

Man it seems impossible to get the highest level honor no matter how many good deeds I do with my honor rating a step or two below max. And similarly, there is nothing I can seem to do to get minimum honor. Despite murdering a trainful of passengers with a sawed off, parking the train on a bridge over water and shooting every cop, and then going into St Denis and picking off every person and horse from the train I could never get my honor below a step or two above the minimum.

I really don't know about minimum honor. I never tried that as there are no benefits at all to having low honor. And maybe your honor is capped or something earlier in the game, because it will max out naturally through the progression of the story if you're playing with high honor.

Fucking hell, that part in Chapter 5 of RDR2 when you can't save for nearly two hours. Man I hate that shit when they string like six missions together with a ton of cutscenes and no way to save in between them if you want to turn the game off. On top of that one of the missions is just walking a pretty significant distance on the map, can't even steal a horse because no one is out on the roads. There is no reason you shouldn't be able to save in at least that section where there is literally nothing happening in the game. I have mostly enjoyed RDR2 since I picked it up again say a month and a half ago but that's piss poor game design to not have any save points in between so many missions strung together.

Persona 5 says hi, Fuckface. :lol You know how many times I cursed that game because I'd get stuck in dialogue hell with one day running into the next with no opportunity to save? I'd just put my PS4 in sleep mode in hopes that I didn't have a power outage and have to restart that entire sequence again when returning.

If it's that one part I'm thinking of where you return to Shady Belle, there was literally a horse hitched to a light post at the very beginning of the trip for you to steal. That entire sequence was meant to be more cinematic than anything. Just put the horse in cruise control and listen to the tune that starts up.

But all in all, Chapter 5 is probably the most criticized part of the game. Guarma feels rushed and out of place. Almost all of the missions are strung together without a break - no freeroam available. It serves its purpose though as it hastens Dutch's decline into madness and Arthur's health problems.

There is no part of Persona 5 where you go an hour and a half between saves. I hated the Hawaii trip in it, but that was like 30-40 minutes if you read all the text. I liked the actual missions in Chapter 5, but there were so many places you should have been able to save where you couldn't. Shit I must have run right by that horse in the return to Shady Belle, I saw a light and thought get the fuck away from that I'm so wanted right now. :lol

Also the PC version of the game crashes sometimes because, well, that's what Rockstar games do on PC. I had a crash right at the beginning of that five or six mission sequence in my first attempt and all I could think was how pissed I'd be if it did it again when I was an hour into that string of missions on the second attempt.

Oh well at least my Level 4 White Arabian is still alive. I bought a Black Arabian in St Denis since it has better base stats but stabled the thing quickly after seeing how shitty even an awesome horse is at Level 1 once I got used to the White Arabian I had at Level 4, and can't stomach the thought of training another horse to Level 4 since it took so long with the White Arabian to do so.

Crap maybe I went up the slope instead of the steps and was a ways away from that light. I usually don't like to do crimes in the towns either unless I can do them in an alley or something where I can easily kill witnesses. Never got that song playing when running to Shady Belle either. Should have had a save point once you got into Van Horn too. And the horse should have been a quest marker or something if that mission was designed around taking that specific horse, which it obviously seems like it was from the video you posted. I was thinking there would be Pinkertons everywhere so best not to even set foot in Van Horn once I got off the boat so stayed off the roads as much as I could around there until I realized I need to find someone to rob for his horse since running was going to take forever even if I was cutting through a bunch of swamp and streams.

Dying Light has the same annoying weapon scaling issue as AC Odyssey

seems the weapons you acquire as the game goes along simply outclass whatever you had before, so i never feel like its worth applying upgrades to weapons and using resources, if im just going to find a patently superior weapon 20 minutes later. i have all these blueprints for weapons/upgrades but why spend resources if i can just pick up a random weapon on the ground that will be better?

the combat definitely becomes more engaging as you unlock more abilities (similar to God of War, which also starts out rough until you start unlocking skills)

Weapons are all temporary in Dying Light anyways.

much prefer something like God of War/Sekiro where you get stronger via skills. god of war had armor with buffs, but you werent replacing those every 10 minutes. heck even blodborne had multiple weapons but i went through my entire playthrough using the starting hunters axe almost exclusively and it didnt feel like i was handicapping myself

It has been a few years since I played but I remember unlocking new skills was a big part of the game. I hardly did any crafting though since weapons are plentiful and degrade.

I think most of my crafting was shit like add electricity to this sword because the kill animation looks cooler, shit like that.

I really don't know about minimum honor. I never tried that as there are no benefits at all to having low honor. And maybe your honor is capped or something earlier in the game, because it will max out naturally through the progression of the story if you're playing with high honor.

Curious, is this considered max honor? The icon kind of looks like it could be at the max honor level and I'm in Chapter 6 and can't seem to raise my honor any higher, but the bar isn't maxed out so I don't know.

The good ending is kind of stupid anyways. Just watch that shit on youtube or something. The boss fight for the good ending isn't anything remotely difficult, especially for someone who has beat Kos.

Tbh I felt all three endings kinda sucked. Right now I'm at Menses nightmare on new game +. I wanna fight that last boss even if it's a formality. I felt cheated :lol

Man I hope them recreating New Austin and Blackwater in the RDR2 engine isn't just for Red Dead Online, but will also be used for a remake of RDR1. I have read so much about how that codebase was such a clusterfuck that they barely got working on 360, and didn't get well running on PS3, and that it was too fucked up for a port to PC/PS4/XB1. Which is about the only explanation that could make any sense given the way an RDR1 remake would have printed money for Rockstar. But man if we could play that game in this engine...

I've been reading that shit since 2018. People even found ways to glitch themselves over to Mexico. And other than bring barren and empty, the terrain was all rendered. But ultimately I think Take 2/Rockstar are too greedy to make any type of single player DLC or addon.

Nah I'm talking a standalone $60-$70 game. I'd buy it to play RDR1 at 4k60 on PS5 / XSX.

Wonder if it loses anything playing it now, being pretty early gen. DJR210, Cry Havoc, and I were nuts over that game when it came out, but that was nearly 6 years ago I think. Graphics were really impressive for early 2015 though and I had just built a pretty nice gaming PC a few months before. I loved the sheer violence of it, chopping heads off and cutting down limbs in slow motion sequences with bad B-movie music playing. And then the most predictable plot ever that made it seem like a shout out to low budget gore movies.

I think if I listed my top 10 games of last generation I'd go

1. Bloodborne
2. NieR Automata
3. Persona 5 Royal
4. Dying Light
5. Super Mario Odyssey
6. God of War
7. Yakuza 0
8. Red Dead Redemption 2
9. Horizon Zero Dawn
10. The Witcher 3

with apologies to Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us, Part II, which I'm waiting to play on PS5. Pretty ridiculous generation it was, especially to not even have a game as good as Zelda Breath of the Wild in it, which was a game I put at least 150 hours into.

I'm at the end of the main quest line in CP2077 now...about 50 hours in, taking out the sidequests i've done (and there are tons) I would say the main quest is maybe 25-30 hours long. tbh it is a bit short for my liking, really wish the Takemura and V storyline was longer.

hopefully CDPR releases some nice DLC for this ala Witcher 3 which had the two best expansions i've played since the Shimmering Isles expansion for ESIV

Been playing Stranded Deep. It's addictive but one of those way too busy games. Make the water, catch the food, collect the wood, make the fire, cook the food, make the sunscreen, build the shelter, make the water, etc... hard to find time to explore the rest of the islands.

Started playing Yakuza 4 Remastered and what a difference visually from Yakuza 3. Yakuza 4 looks like an early gen PS4 game with a framerate bump while Yakuza 3 looks like an early gen PS3 game with a framerate bump and a resolution bump. I can see why Yakuza fans consider Yakuza 3 by far the weakest game of the series.

Beat CP2077, got one of the better endings from what i've gathered. Very good game, but not as good as it was hyped to be or even anywhere close to The Witcher 3. I give it an 8.25/10. hopefully the console peasants get to experience it at some point

Curious, do you have a FreeSync or GSync monitor? Was kind of considering getting one since my cpu is a little weak for gaming right now (4C/8T Haswell chip, Xeon E3-1231v3 at 3.6 GHz) but was wondering if 40-50 fps on a FreeSync panels looks worth a shit. Because I know you weren't getting a steady 60 fps on Cypberpunk. :lol
