Been playing Mario Wonder recently…IMO, the best 2/2.5D Mario to date. Only gripe is that the non-Special World levels have consistently been easy as $hit. Although I’m only through 2 worlds so far IMO

Better than Super Mario World and Super Mario 3? Wow. Gonna have to check it after the Spurs choke this game away to Portland's G-League team.

I think it's better than Super Mario World for sure, feels like the natural evolution that expands on a lot of ideas; although I wish they brought back the secret exits. That sh!t was an awesome feeling the first time you stumbled upon one in the original SMW. Getting a secret exit, cutting through a part of the map that you assumed was off limits, and taking a pipe to a secret fortress to fight those weird Reznor Rhinos.

I'll review again after finishing it along with the Secret World. It looks similar to Star World in that you access different areas of the map based on which world you come in from. So far, I've done one secret level and it was pretty well designed and very difficult as expected. I assume, just like the rest of the Mario games post 2010ish, there's probably an optional Kaizo type level at the very end you play if you've collected everything.

Mario 3 was my favorite and is still pretty close; just a different type of game. If I want to play through a quick game, that's overall challenging from start to finish without all the extra bells and whistles, SMB3 is still the best in that regard.

It is funny though what is considered "hard" now vs back in the early 1990s. There was one level I did yesterday, had moderately difficult platforming, that I breezed through on the first try that's apparently at "controller throwing" hard level for younger gamers. :lol was surprised to see so many commenters on a YouTube video saying they burned through 30+ lives on what seemed like a pretty mid-tier level rofl

You want hard play Japan Super Mario Bros 2. I cut my teeth on VS Super Mario Bros in the arcades as my parents wouldn't buy me an NES since they thought it was a fad after Atari went under, and that game had a bunch of Japan Super Mario 2 levels. I'd go to my friend's house and say oh god this level is really hard when they were playing Super Mario Bros on NES and then see no, the NES game didn't have wind and forward moving hammer bros and impossible jumps like VS Super Mario Bros did :lol

I think I finally beat Lost Levels legitimately (no save states) for the first time last year. I got good enough to where most of the levels really weren't THAT bad, but the late stage castle ones were just brutal. I seem to recall some crazy platforming jumps on those levels like jumping down onto a platform directly below you, which was ridiculous when the game physics actually took into account acceleration by gravity when falling and having no gamebreaking items like capes or raccoon tails to make jumping easier. Another one I remember was having to jump onto a pipe on the very edge with the piranha plant coming out of it. The last one, World D-4, IMO is the hardest Mario level I've ever played. It was so bad it was the only one I had to save state through for the longest time until finally beating it legitimately last year. :lol haven't touched the game since

The US version of Mario Bros 2 (Doki Doki Panic) gave me much more trouble than 1 and 3 for the longest time until I realized where all the mushroom/potion locations were. Then it got stupid easy. I was basically playing the game in 'minimal health' mode the whole time unknowingly :lol

nice thing about miles morales being a short game is that you can breeze through NG+, even on the harder difficulty (which tbh doesnt feel any harder, especially with the OP skill you gain in NG+ that basically gives you a free life)

ive already gotten all the annoying trophies out of the way. once i wrap up the main story on NG+ i'll have plat

i dont usually hunt plat, but its not that hard for these spiderman games, and i did so in the first one, so felt i may as well carry on with it. heck, i think my only platinums are spider-man, god of war, sekiro, god of war: ragnarok, and soon to be miles morales

will jump into god of war DLC next

Really curious about Asgard's Wrath 2, it's getting a lot of 10/10 reviews and is supposedly the first really legit VR game. I hear it runs just as well on the Quest 2 vs the 3 but still hard to stomach dropping $250 at minimum just to play 1 game

Finished the first world and so far it's cool but I wouldn't put it above Super Mario Maker 2's built in levels so far. And yeah even the four star level in World 1 was easy as hell. Much better than Super Mario U Deluxe though. I'm way too early to rank this but so far of the 2D/2.5D Marios I have played I'd rank them

1. Super Mario Bros 1 / VS Super Mario Bros
2. Super Mario World
3. Super Mario 3
4. Super Mario Maker 2 (built-in levels)
5. New Super Mario Bros (DS)
6. New Super Mario Bros Wii
7. Super Mario Land 2
8. US Super Mario Bros 2
9. Super Mario 3D World
10. Japan Super Mario Bros 2
11. New Super Mario Bros 2 (3DS)
12. Super Mario Land
13. Mario Bros
99. Super Mario Bros U

Gotta admit I never played Yoshi's Island as that crying baby annoyed the shit out of me.

Also don't get the VS Super Mario Bros on sale for Switch. It's terrible and has way too much lag to feel representative of the original arcade. Wish Nintendo would have done a Switch port of it.

There was also a SMB1 inspired game someone wrote for Atari 2600 a few years ago called Princess Rescue. Whoever programmed this JFC it's impressive for the hardware.

Worth playing through atleast once, but I'd put it in the middle of the pack or maybe even lower half as far as 2D Mario games go. It was a great game at the time, but hasn't really aged very well IMO. Whenever I've tried to play through it again, I end up not finishing and it's a pretty short game.

I'm about halfway through with Wonder and I'm realizing that it's just intentionally meant to be more of a 'fun' game than challenging. On World 4 and I've already got 99 lives and outside of just being carless, I couldn't imagine dying more than once on any level. Even the 4 star levels are a joke for the most part, although there are some cool puzzle based mini levels that I was actually stumped on for awhile. I stand corrected, there are a few levels with secret exits but they are usually pretty obvious and just consist of getting and then not getting the Wonder Seed.

Even playing four Special World levels, only one was actually hard, two were easy, and there was one hilarious one that just had a bunch of 'jump out of nowhere' enemies that was easy once you memorized where they were. Still really like the game, but it feels more like just watching a movie where I'm wondering what the he11 they're going to come up with next vs actually feeling accomplished when completing a level.

just got into the Valhalla DLC of god of war. its much better than i thought considering it was free. thought it was basically going to be combat challenges but they actually have a surprisingly good amount of story/cutscene content where it feels like a proper DLC that you might ordinarily pay for.

:lol ok, I've beaten all of Mario Wonder with the exception of the Penultimate Bonus Level and f*ck this level rofl

It's a 10 room badge gauntlet with no power ups and a checkpoint in rooms 4 and 7. Just a meatgrinder of deaths until you memorize the rhythm/patterns of each level. Two rooms were particularly hard; one where you have the Spring badge and you have to precisely jump over the fireball rope things that move in a circle. And the last one with the Invisible badge which I'm currently stuck on. About halfway through the room I had to keep hopping up and down on those flying balloon things and legitimately had no idea where I was and of course get knocked back three rooms after dying. Taking a break now , but man this one is a grind. Only other level in the game that really took some time to beat was the Jump! Jump! Jump! level. Rest were pretty easy.

The last world's levels leading up to the last Bowser fight were pretty awesome as far as presentation tbh

the wall jump one kicked my ass the most out of all of them. The fact you had to go really fast made it so that the last row of blocks would disappear on me right before making it to the end.

I finally beat the penultimate level, and had to do it twice because I missed the top of the flag the first time rofl. The last invisibility section was such a clusterf*ck, but the rest of the rooms weren't that bad. :lol you re-do them enough times to where you can eventually speedrun them without too much trouble. Final reward for beating it was 'meh'. Only thing I really think was lacking were better boss fights, but 2D Mario games always just rehash the Koopalings or Bowser Jr so that was to be expected I guess.

One thing I gotta say is super annoying in this game is every time you beat a level some stupid NPC has lines of meaningless dialogue you just mash A to get through ASAP. Would be so annoying if they put this crap in say Super Mario 3 instead of only having shit like that after clearing out a castle.

Got through World 4 and four of the special world stages and would probably consider this better than the Super Mario Maker 2 built in levels and definitely above New Super Mario DS, but think it still has a long way to go to be able to catch up to Super Mario 3 or Super Mario World. Still gotta hand it to Nintendo though, it's gotta be difficult to keep 2D Super Mario fresh after nearly forty years but they have definitely accomplished that in Wonder.

god of war DLC was pretty awesome. took some getting used to until you really learned whats going on. with that said, i didnt have the patience to play it on Give Me God of War difficulty, so I played on Give Me No Mercy instead. was still quite a challenge. was fun because it really incentivizes/forces you to use and master all 3 weapons, incentivizes you to try out all the different shields, different relics, etc.

got all the trophies and maxed out the available stats. still gonna do another run or two just so i can finish topping off all the available upgrades. if i feel the urge to get into god of war combat, i'll definitely just jump back into this mode, hike the difficulty, and do a few runs. but in no way intend to start the DLC from scratch in give me god of war. i imagine that would feel like complete shit when your character is underleveled

another hour or so of this, then onto Horizon forbidden west

generally speaking, even though the axe has been my favorite weapon in the god of war franchise, i found it to be the weakest of the 3 in valhalla when it came to potential builds. the spear definitely had some easy mode builds if you get the right upgrades for the spear throws since you can just play everything safe and try to cheese at a distance

the blades had probably the single nastiest build, if you get all the upgrades for the triange > r2 attack where you spin the chain and then slam the blade down. the DPS on that is unmatched, but requires you to stay in melee range and tank hits here and there.

the other biggest surprise was discovering a completely OP relic that i completely overlooked in the main game. in the main game i usually just used the realm shift relic until i unlocked the broken hilt from the berserker king. but theres one that gives you more or less immunity for about 10 seconds, called unstoppable aura or something. you take basically chip damage from everything and become very hard to stagger. so i would just proc that, mash triangle + r2 blades attack. tank a few hits but just eliminate anything in front of me. completely bonkers build, and if you get the perks that give you a lot of relic refresh opportunities, you basically cant die as you can keep that aura on for a majority of the match.

i was able to do clear a full run on show me mastery (valhalla's version of gmgow), but yeah, i dont intend to replay the whole thing from scratch on that difficulty before being leveled up and all that.

ive unlocked everything in the dlc but there is one cosmetic shield rong that is only unlocked if you clear a full run on show me mastery while also carrying the burden thing that slowly drains your health over time

i tried it once, got stuck with a crappy build and got my shit pushed in right before final boss. its a bitch for sure... but i think doable with a decent build. one thing is with that burden, DPS matters a lot more, and cheese spear builds just dont kill fast enough to make it work.

Forbidden West is nice so far. forgot how much i like horizon. playing on Very Hard like i did with the first game (2nd hardest setting they offer) and the combat feels about right. spending my early upgrade points to get all the stealth strike damage upgrades and will kinda go from there.

with that said, for a game that emphasizing climbing, platforming and such, i still find the jumping to be wonky. like when theres a wall/ridge that i should be able to hang on or climb over, ill have to jump toward a couple of times to get it to work. as opposed to the more tomb raider/uncharted type stuff where you kinda easily lock-on to the intended jump target

probably the biggest upgrade from the first game is the facial expressions during dialogue. was pretty awful in the first game, and distractingly so, but they did much better this time around

but i cant imagine anyone playing the first game thinking Joel was going to never any feel any repercussions for his actions, especially considering how fucked up the game is and how almost everyone you meet along the way dies. he kinda had it coming tbh. what sucks is I wish it had never leaked, because it would have been 100x better if i never knew and saw it unfold without any pre-knowledge. even still, 10/10 game for me.

if you asked me before TLOU2 came out, i probably still would have guessed he died, but differently

after already having the Winter chapter mostly playing as Ellie, in addition to Left Behind, it was pretty clear the second game would have a lot of Ellie playtime, and that could allow them to have Joel die. after all, TLOU was never about happy endings and fairness, etc.

i would have guessed that ellie found out about joel's lie, basically told him to fuck off, he shows up anyway to help when she needs it, she still tells him to fuck off after he saves her in some manner, and then she sees him die and regrets it, or something along those lines. a little more hollywood-y

gameplay in forbidden west is good fun. game is also massive, as expected

my main issues:

1) waaaaay too much elemental variety. the first game already was pushing it and they dialed it up to 11 in this one. if you are going to have a limited weapon wheel, its a really frustrating system, since you never really know what you're going to need, and its not exactly easy to upgrade weapons.

2) too many weapons. ties into #1. which hunter bow is better? the one with fire and shock? or the one with plasma and acid? etc etc. really tough to figure out what is worth leveling up. especially when i have green tier weapons and i know down the line ima get blue/purple stuff. why waste limited upgrade materials at all? and then as a result play thru early stretches of game with weak equipment. this was an issue in assassins creed odyssey, witcher 3 as well, iirc

3) this one is partially my fault, as im the type who likes to fully explore every unlocked nook and cranny of areas that i unlock as a go, before progressing with the main story. but i keep encountering stuff that i dont have tools to reach. which is fine, happens in every game. but its damn near everywhere, and you have to trek through machines/danger just to reach the little question marks on the map, and i dont like running long distances thru trouble just for an inaccessible point

im ok with some of that, but seems like 20% of the POIs arent even accessible when you encounter them

i agree about the immersion part of it. HZD was amazing because you were learning about the world and the exposition dumps about zero dawn were really fascinating. figuring out why humanity is the way it is, etc.

you dont really get much of that feel in forbidden west. there isnt really that same wonder. at least not yet for me, in the earlier parts of the game

Damn I thought Ragnarok was better than 2018.

Oh yeah the wall jump level, I can pretty much re-create that whole level in my head from having to re-do after dying in the last room so many times.

tbh that invisible room kinda spoils the ending a little bit since you pretty much have to use some kind of gimmick to beat it in order to track Mario on the "x-plane". I know the devs probably assumed players would do that and it meant it as a troll portion, but I'd imagine only the most seasoned basement dweller with ultra Neckbeard powers can beat a level straight up where Mario is invisible and needing to land 15 hairpin jumps in a row in order to complete it rofl. I imagine there's somebody out there who did it though... cheeto stains on his shirt and 100 4chan tabs open on his laptop at the same time tbh imho

:lmao I downloaded a Kaizo hack one time and didn't even last 8 seconds. I think it was a level where you're immediately falling, surrounded by spikes, and had to continually hop on bullet bills just to tread water or something. Never again. forbidden west is massive af. good thing the combat is fun. reminds me of AC Odyssey where you are just hunting for question marks on the map. but the gameplay in this is significantly better. story is fine, but im constantly getting side tracked with other content.

one thing i had been putting off because i knew i hated them in zero dawn were the hunting grounds. also, playing on Very Hard really fucks up the stealth challenges in hunting grounds, since even with all the stealth attack abilities unlocked, you STILL cant one shot kill any of the enemies. only way to complete it is to use stealth strike, drop a smoke bomb (i never use smokes in game), then quickly run behind and stealth strike again. if it werent for the time limits it wouldnt be that hard to weaken an enemy, disengage and find cover, then stealth strike again.

but with the time constraint, smoke bomb is the only method. i figured dumping all those skill points into both stealth strike upgrades would have at least given me that benefit, but no

man, upgrading weapons is rough. needing very specific machine parts from some big baddies. its tough enough to fight them, but remembering to knock off their tooth and a random gizmo behind their shoulderblades without destroying them... or defeating them but having to leave in tact the big explosive sac that otherwise could have made the fight half as long

its a bit of a chore, but luckily the combat is fun and the added strategy prevents the fights from becoming too trivial/monotonous. supposedly there is an "easy loot" option which basically means if you kill a machine you get literally everything from it, but tbh that feels really cheap and i refuse to do that. the strategy behind it makes the fights more engaging, but having to do them multiple times because between my good gear i need like 9 of the same part to upgrade them all. feel like theres too much overlap between required materials

also, it might be intentional, but im finding it hard not to become overleveled. im at a point where the recommended level for the current main quest is 20 but my character is 33. ive also gone around and done several cauldrons and stuff. but if i just blitz through the main quests earlier, then im going to just be massively overleveled for all the side quests/errands which often give you really good loot/weapons, in addition to skill tree tokens.

so sure, i could have run through the main quests back when i was level 20 but then id have a bunch of level 11 side quests still available. basically im just attacking every quest, whether it be a main quest, side quest, errand, salvage contract, rebel camp, relic ruin, etc, in order of recommended level. but the game has made it so you wind up pretty overleveled by doing so.

the last main quest i did was level 18 recommended and had me fight the big snek, and i think i died maybe once. but then afterwards i did the level 30 cauldron and the boss was the same snek and that thing was pushing my shit in. its electric attack would literally one shot me from full health so i had to take off my better armor and put on one just for shock resistance to allow me to barely survive that big attack if i ever slipped

finished campaign of Horizon Forbidden West

very good game. some big improvements to the first game. i do think the weapon variety was excessive. plasma elemental type felt very worthless. was never worth using even against enemies weak to it like the late game bads. most things that were weak to plasma were also weak to acid, and acid just just much better.

biggest gripe is the farming it took to upgrade late game weapons was just not enjoyable. its not that it was hard. was just time consuming and a... grind. in a game that already has a billion side quests, errands, rebel camps, rebel outposts, salvage contracts, relic ruins, survey drones, melee pits, etc etc etc, having me run around and having to reset at campfires just to farm the same big snek, elephant, or dinosaur 9 different times really just isnt engaging

Might as well wait until June 21st for Elden Ring since that's when the DLC comes. Though I'd skip it forward beyond Dark Souls 3 in your queue. And probably 2 also since I have heard 2 isn't as good as 3, but I haven't played 2. 3 is great but Elden Ring is a better game and you're never going to finish your backlog anyways. Spiderman 2 I think I'm waiting for either $30 on PS5 or a Steam release.

Also wouldn't bother with the $10 TLOU Part II PS5 native upgrade, as the PS4 game runs perfectly and looks great at either 1800p60 or 1440p60 (forget which it is) in performance mode on PS5. Even better game than the first IMO. Also wouldn't bother with the $10 PS5 native upgrade for Ghost of Tsushima. All it adds is a bunch of annoying vibration in the DualSense and better lip sync with the Japanese voices. Which you should use, Jin Sakai sounds angry as fuck in the Japanese voice but kind of faggy in the English voice, but even being able to understand what he says in Japanese the lip sync didn't bother me at all in the PS4 version in BC and it runs 1800p60 in the graphics mode playing the PS4 game in BC on PS5.

Finally finished a second playthrough of Persona 3 Reload with a kill of Elizabeth so I'll probably move on to the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth demo tonight or tomorrow and see whether I want to buy at launch. Probably will since the reviews look stellar and there is nothing I want to play ahead of it right now anyways after Sega locked the Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth New Game Plus behind a $15 paywall.

its harder to go back to older games in a series. its like playing GTA5 then going and playing San Andreas. imagine playing GTA V, and having San Andreas and GTA 3 in your backlog. GTA 3 will never feel right (unless its a game you've played before and like for nostalgia's sake)

Meh I played Super Mario Odyssey before I played anything beyond the first stage of Super Mario 64 and still really enjoyed playing through the full game of the latter. Or Persona 5 on PS4 before Persona 1 on PSP. Or NieR Automata on PS4 before Nier Gestalt on XBox 360. Or Dragon Quest XI S on PS5 before Dragon Quest 1 on Super Famicom. Or Shin Megami Tensei IV on 3DS before Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne on PS2. Or Zelda Breath on the Wild on Switch before Zelda Wind Waker on Gamecube. spurraider21 will be proud. Ugh fucking Atlus won't let me upgrade my PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal to the PS5 version to get the 60 fps and I don't want to spend full price a third time on the game so will wait for Thursday since this always drops to $30 in the big Steam sales.

Maybe should just do a 78th playthrough of Persona 4 Golden instead as a compromise? :lol

That makes no sense. I actually think Dark Souls 3 is the superior game. ER does a ton of things better but the back 1/3rd of it really drops off with incredibly tedious areas and weird difficulty spikes, whereas DS3 is just sublime the entire way through.

Wasn't my experience at all, thought Elden Ring was rock solid the entire way through. The only huge difficulty spike I found was right before the end of the game if you wanted to fight one of those optional tree minibosses that jumps up and drops scarlet rot but that was only because he was in a really confined location right at a doorway and you had two miniboss knights or something (been a while since I played it so forget the exact enemy type) attacking you at the same time, so I can usually only kill that boss maybe 20% of the time. Best to just run past it.

Eh. The Haligtree alone is/was the opposite of fun for me. As were several of the laboriously repetitive dungeons you could explore that felt incredibly samey. Oddly enough, Malenia wasn't even close to the toughest boss in the game for me, that went to the Valiant Gargoyles. Worst boss fight in the entire Dark Souls series of games. Not even remotely enjoyable. I got Malenia close on my 5th try and took her out on my 13th or 14th. Not bad.

ER is still an utterly fantastic game, and if anyone else had released it it would be an unimaginable feat. But I just feel that Ds3 was tighter, more balanced, and more focused.

I want to play through both again and see if I still feel that way, though.

Amazing game. Just don't play it like an old school AC game because it's kind of boring like an old school AC game if you play it in stealth like one. Much better to go in loud and challenge everyone at the door when you hit a Mongol camp. Also much better with Japanese voices. The English voice sounds kind of soft and doesn't match what's happening at all (eg your people being slaughtered by the Mongols). JP voice in angry as hell and fits way better. Don't know how an American studio butchered the English voice acting but knocked it out of the park with the JP voice acting.

Anybody here ever play the old Megaman X games?

The switch has the legacy collection for X1 - through X4 for only $20. I decided to give it a go, since I never really got far when it was first introduced on SNES, and was blindsided by how hard it was rofl. Completely different experience getting annihilated by the get-go over and over compared to the more mainline Nintendo games. Ended up barely beating X and X2 even with most of the upgrades. Blows my mind that some guys are able to actually beat those games with "No Hits" or doing a minimal run with only the X buster and no upgrades

I've heard the NES ones were brutal. I guess the X series isn't too bad if you get the enough sub tanks and health upgrades to grind it through. But in the beginning stages of the game before you get the upgrades, it's almost expected that you'll get your a$$ handed to you many times by the first boss encounters until you learn the attack patterns since it's a small area and they're fast as he11. Same with the Sigma final bosses, I always game over'ed atleast once before finally grinding it out enough to win. Maybe if I replayed the game enough times, I could try and do a minimal run with enough muscle memory.

Blue Dragon in Demon's Souls has to be the shittiest boss ever. Not because it's hard or anything but because cheese is the only way to fight it.

How to beat the blue dragon:

1. Buy 500 arrows
2. Get your health to less than 30%
3. Equip rat ring to make your attacks stronger
4. Equip ring of magic sharpness to make your magic stronger
5. Cheese dragon to half health with long distance magic attacks (eg soul arrow)
6. Dragon flies away; chase him up to top of first staircase
7. Let him blow fire, wait 1 second then run; the 1 second wait makes him blow fire in the same area a second time
8. Stop in one specific spot at top of second staircase where dragon can't hit you. You're right in front of the dragon not hiding behind anything so he should be able to hit you with fire, but the game is programmed so the dragon will never hit you in this one specific area.
9. Pull out bow and shoot dragon in the toenail 300+ times until dead.
10. Congrats, you beat the shittiest designed boss ever via cheese; the only way the boss can be beaten.

Demon's Souls is such a great game but the two dragon fights are so shitty and require cheese. There is legit no way other than cheese to fight them.

You can skip steps 2-4 but then the fight just takes way longer and way more arrows and magic.

Thank god FromSoft didn't put these kind of lame bossfights in any of their other games.

You can skip steps 2-4 but then the fight just takes way longer and way more arrows and magic.

Thank god FromSoft didn't put these kind of lame bossfights in any of their other games.

IMO the Valiant Gargoyles were the epitome of terrible boss design.

Poison attack you can't see if you're looking at the bosses because of the camera angle, said poison damages and staggers you, two bosses with massive gap closing moves that are hard to dodge, huge combo attacks, and a lot of health.

That poison though. It requires no build up, starts damaging you as soon as it hits. I hate it so much.

I enjoyed that fight. The only fight I didn't like in Elden Ring was on the way to Malenia you have one of those trees that jumps and releases scarlet rot in a small hallway.

But you can't tell me this isn't a worse bossfight than anything in any other FromSoft game:

JRPG fans eating good in 2024 between Shadow of the Erdtree, Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, and Persona 3 Reload, with Mataphor ReFantasio in October and Persona 3 Reload Episode Aigis in September. Fallen Order is really good tbh

going to Dathomir really made me have to "git gud" particularly on the grandmaster difficulty, which feels very sekiro-ish. the higher difficulty doesnt make the enemies any spongier. they just hit harder and are more aggressive. thats difficulty done well.

i never got around to getting much into Elden Ring, it had came out right after I finally beat Dark Souls 3 and i got kinda burnt out on souls-like games. i put maybe 20 hours into it, and sometimes i want to go back and pick it up but i have no fucking clue where i left off so i feel like i need to start a new character which i dont have time to dedicate to

FFVII rebirth i enjoyed for a couple weeks after it came out but idk...just didn't keep my attention. i got to the part where you're leaving Junon on the ship to Costa del Sol and my interest waned.

wife is going out of town with my daughter to visit her family next week for about 2 weeks so im going to try to go back and beat Rebirth during that time period. kinda thinking about firing up Witcher 3 though

oh wow, Zeffo was miles easier than Dathomir. guess i was supposed to do zeffo first lol. zeffo was massive though. and the lack of fast travel is pretty annoying tbh. i get basically all the way through Zeffo, eventually acquire the push ability and the little droid dude's hacking/splice ability. then remember all these points in the map where i can use these to open new areas (metroidvania design), but its a real bitch to basically do a full lap around the whole map and then have to trek all the way back to the ship.

and im gonna have to do it again, because even after doing a full lap and opening new areas, there are now even further areas that i cant access. see objects highlighted red and red doors on the map. not looking forward to having to head all the way back again later. yes there are some souls-esque shortcuts i opened along the way, but not nearly enough to make traveling easier

It's a great port. My scrubby 1660 Super was able to run it 1080p60 using Hardware Unboxed's optimized settings and it looked incredible. It's such a long game I haven't tried it since upgrading to a 6700 XT though. Definitely one of those games like Witcher 3 that are so big you don't want to do a second playthrough but amazing on that first playthrough.

nothing but impressed with Fallen Order the more I get through it

i still think the lack of fast travel is a big nuisance in a game with some gargantuan maps/planets with different layers, tombs, etc... there are shortcuts you can make use of but its still a chore. with that said, they at least make use of this mechanic (or lack thereof) with some special encounters. ie a path you've safely traveled throughout the game now suddenly out of nowhere has a miniboss that has never appeared before. keeps it from being a series of long stale runs.

but the combat, the metroidvania layout, skill tree, etc... just very well made. the boss/miniboss fights are nice. playing on the highest difficulty it feels like an easier more arcade-y version of sekiro, but with cooler platforming. still plenty challenging and always have that anxiety of "where is that next bonfire." no walk in the park but definitely not sekiro levels. i guess other main criticism is you go out of your way to find these chests and they have nothing but cosmetics which i dont care for. only reason i care is the xp. and you still have to go out of your way because may be one of the valuable stim containers

finished fallen order. loved it. but final boss was underwhelming. susceptible to the basic force slow to get free hits. at least when you fight shirtless dual light saber guy, he was basically immune to force stuff (only wasnt if you used a force push while he was already in the middle of an attack sequence, which is kind of like a parry and therefore earned)

overall awesome game tho. grandmaster difficulty was challenging enough but never as brutal as fromsoft games can be.

up next... probably something quite small like Hellblade

after that probably flipping a coin between Cyberpunk and Days Gone... i still have Elden Ring sitting in its wrapper, but that game just feels daunting. not in difficulty, just in size/scope. i dont have the time for several hours long gaming sessions anymore. so i just feel like a month will pass by and the amount of actual progress ive made would be minimal

and after a full game of lightsaber stuff followed by what i assume is mostly melee combat in hellblade, would be more refreshing to play a shooter anyway

TLOU Part 2 is a masterpiece but you probably missed your chance to get it cheap now that it has that unnecessary PS5 remaster when the PS4 version was already great running 1440p60 on PS5. It's significantly better than the first IMO, which is saying a fucking lot because the first game was one of the biggest things that got me to buy a PS4 in 2016 and as soon as I played it I knew the system was worth every penny I paid for it.

RGG is smart in that they reuse their engine and their assets so they're not reinventing the wheel every game and can keep pumping out quality games like everyone did in the NES through PS3 gens. I don't know why more studios don't. I mean was anyone complaining when GTA III, GTA Vice City, and GTA San Andreas came out within a three year span and all played pretty similarly? Did anyone complain about getting Persona 3 and Persona 4 only two years apart? Or Final Fantasy IV and VI only a couple of years apart? Or Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas two years apart? Or Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Elder Scrolls Skyrim five years apart? So stupid that studios want to wait 7-10-15 years to make new games in the same universe as their previous one. RGG is one of the few devs that takes that old-school PS2 gen approach to their release schedule.

Also Yakuza / Like a Dragon is a great series to play as a patient gamer since the games get really cheap within 2-3 years. Play through the old ones while they're cheap to buy and by the time you get to the new ones they'll probably be $5 to $10 too.

Beat Space Marine 2 campaign recently, that was pretty enjoyable.

Playing Star Wars Outlaws now and it kinda sucks. Like the game itself is not....terrible, not that great either, but holy shit the stealth takedown animations are hilariously bad and the plot so far just seems dumb. I do like the syndicate system and how doing certain things can lower your rep with them vs others but feels like it could be improved upon and it's kinda simplistic. Game overall just does not have the polish you'd expect for a AAA SW title

Silent Hill 2 Remake is $0 on the Rune store tbh if you're a PoorC gamer. It's marvelous. Feral is the best mobile port developer in the business, and even I cannot believe they crammed the full PC experience into a mobile port, made it better, fixed many of the bugs, and even improved the graphical fidelity.

We're gonna be playing BG3 on our phones in 5 years. Insanity.

If you haven't tried it, Balatro is sensational. Pick it up on the Steam Fall Sale that starts in 3 days.

I'm also liking NBA 2k25, they finally brought the next gen engine to PC and it plays really well after some tweaking (single player only).

Sony remastered it and jacked the price up to $40 for the original PS4 version so they could sell the remaster at $50. The PS4 original I bought for $20 was already perfect on PS5 after the 60 fps patch so this was the most unnecessary remaster yet but it gave them an excuse to jack the price up due to the success of the TV series.

Got survivor for 20, spiderman 2 for 30, tlou pt2 for 40

spiderman 2 was selling for 40 most places. Walmart alone had it for 30. The others i just got from best buy

First time I have seen Spiderman 2 for $30. I would have bought at that price before but the typical sale price has only dropped to $48 until now and I wasn't buying at that price. But now I figure no reason to pay $30 for it on PS5 since I can just pirate it on PoorC for $0 in January. :lol

Ghost of Yotei is about the only thing keeping me from selling my PS5.

ElNono man you see this shit? Even 10GB cards like the 3080 getting skullfucked at 1080p by weaker 12GB cards :lol

Ouch never would have thought I'd see the day a 6700 XT would wreck a 3080 with raytracing turned on

It's the stupid game:

The game reserves and presumably uses a fixed amount of graphics card memory (the "pool") and if this amount is not sufficient, the game stutters. It doesn't matter whether that much VRAM is actually needed at the time, which has the disadvantage that the game sometimes runs worse than it theoretically could when there is a shortage of memory, but has the advantage that the memory allocation and usage hardly change during the game. So if the graphics card memory is sufficient at the start of a game, it will probably be sufficient at the end too.

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to say how much VRAM the game actually needs. The game allocates around 14 GB in the benchmark with the Hyper preset, 13 GB with Giga and just over 12 GB with Ultra - so the differences are small. With a 16 GB graphics card, there were no problems with the Hyper preset in Ultra HD even after a long time of playing. However, it is unclear whether this also applies to a 12 GB graphics card.

With 8 and 10 GB there are big problems even in Full HD
8 GB is clearly not enough for the hyper textures even in full HD, it's nothing more than a stuttering orgy. And the giga textures are still too much for an 8 GB graphics card, which run much better than hyper, but still stutter a lot. And the ultra textures are still too much, even if the average frame rate is right, the game still stutters a lot. Only from the medium setting onwards do 8 GB accelerators no longer have any problems - yes, even high textures are still too much.

With a 12 GB VRAM, WQHD can be played well with the hyper textures and even at higher resolutions, corresponding graphics cards are stable, at least for short periods of time - and experience shows that memory consumption does not increase further when playing games with the id-Tech engine.

However, the maximum performance is not yet available with 12 GB in Ultra HD. The frame rate only increases to the maximum with a 16 GB graphics card, even if the frame pacing is no longer disrupted with 12 GB.

....

Even though Indiana Jones and the Great Circle uses hardware ray tracing throughout, AMD graphics cards perform well. The two fastest Radeons in particular perform well. In WQHD and UWQHD, the GeForce RTX 4080 Super and Radeon RX 7900 XTX work at exactly the same speed, and only in Ultra HD does the Nvidia graphics card pull ahead by 9 percent. Since all Radeons fall behind in Ultra HD, it is conceivable that the additional pixels are a bit too much for the ray tracing capabilities of the AMD GPUs, which then have to struggle accordingly. In this regard, one should not be fooled by the Radeon RX 7800 XT, which suddenly moves closer to the GeForce RTX 4070 in Ultra HD. The latter simply runs out of 12 GB of memory, and the FPS drops accordingly.

Even in Full HD there is a lack of VRAM
Even in Full HD, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle quickly runs out of VRAM, even when the textures are reduced by two levels to the Ultra setting. Graphics cards with just 8 GB run slightly faster than with "Hyper", but are still slow: GeForce RTX 4060 and Radeon RX 7600 only manage a barely playable 30 FPS. And the GeForce RTX 3080 with 10 GB is hardly any better; the former high-end graphics card doesn't achieve more than 36 FPS even with the textures reduced by two levels.

Graphics cards with at least 12 GB achieve their normal performance, the Radeon RX 6700 XT easily achieves 60 FPS in Full HD, while the actual competitor, the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, idles around 30 FPS. The Arc A770 also has problems despite having 16 GB of VRAM - so there is no limitation in this regard. The Radeon RX 6700 XT is a whopping 61 percent faster, but the 60 FPS mark remains far away despite sufficient memory.

so I've been playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard for the last few weeks when time allows. game is bad or just very mediocre. it is terrible as a DA game and it's so bland and shallow but it also has a decent story and is somewhat entertaining. some of the characters are fucking insufferable though and the dialogue is ass. i dont get much time to play these days so i've only put in about 23 hours, but not sure if i'm going to finish it or not. Think i might just buy Black Myth Wukong and play that instead

No reason to compound a bad purchase by spending time on it too. Might as well just move on to something that'll be an enjoyable use of your time.

2027??? lame. That Naughty Dog game looks interesting but of course the main is another non-binary looking female :lol i'll still play it but i'm sure the neckbeards are raging about it already
