loving it so far. im playing on the 2nd highest difficulty (no shot i'm playing Give Me God of War on my first playthrough). my first impression is that the enemies are tougher than 2018. they're much harder to stagger. sometimes even after a parry you cant attack and have to land consecutive parries.

I'm going to have to go with Give Me a Challenge again, that was definitely the difficulty to play the original on for the first playthough. Hope they have an equivalent for the valkyrie fights.

it has a different name, but you're still just looking for the difficulty that is one below give me god of war. im not far enough into the game to know, but the enemy variety is already noticeable
I’m only about an hour or two in, but I’m underwhelmed (sorry Nono). From a mechanics perspective, I don’t see anything that changed from the last (which was the og in my mind). The story isn’t doing much for me because wgaf about Loki/Atreus. Hopefully it picks up.

mechanics are largely the same, but thats not a bad thing considering how GOATed 2018 was. its kinda like Portal 2 adding new gel types but largely having the same game mechanics as Portal 1
ive played a decent amount so far, but probably not that far into main story as i tend to be something of a completionist with these types of games, making sure i've checked every nook and cranny (only frustrating when i dont know that a certain area i can see is inaccessible until later in the game when i approach from a different location or use a new tool/ability, so i end up running around the same area multiple times until i finally realize i cant progress this way yet)

This may be a dumb question, but does your save carry over? Or do you lose all your shit and start over as a scrub in true God of War fashion?
I don't have it yet, and probably won't rush to play it until the semen cloud dies down a little. I like the 2018 GoW quite a bit, but felt like the hype killed it for me. It just couldn't live up to the praise that people were giving it.

I enjoyed it but it fell short to me honestly. The combat is on point though. But i just didnt like how they took basically the most boring part of FFVII and made an entire game out of it, especially how they stick Sephiroth into this part of the story.

It'll be less prominent though. I don't expect bad reviews to come in or anything, just for people to calm down. I can't even open YouTube right now without Google trying to show me another review or playthrough video. That probably says more about their algorithm on me and the stuff I watch more than anything though.

tbh cant get enough of the game. its much bigger than the first one and i love it for that reason. i've always been one to exhaust every exploration option before proceeding with the main quest, and this game allows for a ton of that. although sometimes i do so in vain, because there is that metroidvania element of "you can only access this particular area with an item/ability you wont get until later." was the same way in the 2018 one to be fair, with the light bridges, exploding crystals, hels bramble
WAY more of the side quests/favors than the first game... though to an extent its a quality>quantity effect. in the first game, a vast majority of the Favors were these pretty long, grandiose quests, like finding the dwarven king, freeing dragons, going through the mines to find andvari's ring, etc. in this one, some of them are pretty underwhelming. but theres so many that you will still find a good amount of high quality ones
a lot of very good miniboss encounters as well, a huge upgrade to 2018 in terms of enemy/boss variety

im playing on this difficulty as well, which is the equivalent of "give me a challenge" in 2018. the main difference i've felt is that enemies are generally less likely to stagger, even pretty basic ones
spurraider21
11-18-2022, 10:04 AM
My only real gripe with the combat is that it seems like 80% of the time my runic attack will stagger any enemy but then enemies will walk right through them and smack me. Even the most basic minions.
if they want to have a rule where some enemies don’t get staggered fine. It’s the inconsistencies that feel cheap

The Berserker fights are this games version of the Valkyries. I think the individual berserkers are fine, but the dark souls style gank fights fighting 2 or 3 of them, or one that keeps spawning minions, just aren't very satisfying. spent well over an hour fighting the 3 on 1 until i finally broke through. i'm still pretty under-leveled for the 2v1 (everything one shots me, and im not good enough to flawless these fights yet)
supposedly the last berkserker is comparable to sigrun, and i'm looking forward to that challenge later. gonna get back into main story for a bit.
Fresh off my Ragnarok platinum today. :bobo
Still have a couple of side missions to do and haven't actually 100 percented every region yet. I played on Give me a Balance Experience. No idea how you guys can just jump right into no mercy. Fuck that. I felt like the game gets insanely difficult towards the end so I'm happy with the challenge overall.
Game delivers as usual. The story was strong and the combat, while mostly the same its still top notch. Though I will say I had some issues with it. The dodging and parrying in this game is broken or something. Either that or Kratos has the biggest hitbox in video game history. The amount of times I died due to getting stun locked was crazy. I may be wrong on this but also the iframes in Ragnarok work differently. You can actually get hit while in an animation like when you use runic or rage mode. The berserkers and umm the last "secret" boss are the biggest headaches when it comes to that.

wait so you can get platinum without having completed all the side missions? weird. figured that would have been part of it, though i havent specifically looked at trophies.
i flew to LA and will be here for about 6 weeks until just after the new year, so i wont be able to pick up the game until then. before i left i did just about every side quest/favor available to me. all i had left that i had marked was the Muspelheim Final Trials (already did the 6 original ones). other than gathering a few artifacts or maybe a chest here and there, i more or less 100%d what i could. think i have another berskerker somewhere but wasnt able to access him yet, so probably has to be after main story. i even finished all the ravens and beat the optional boss at the end of that
i just assumed all that would be necessary for a plat anyway

give me no mercy (same as give me a challenge from last game) felt fine. honestly as long as you do ample side content along the way, the main story ends up feeling much easier than the side stuff :lol. after fighting several berserkers, the end of the campaign felt ridiculously easy.
honestly, i cant think of many parts of the main story where i felt i was having issues progressing. maybe Nidhogg took be several attempts to get used to his attacks. and heck even the miniboss right before him took me a few tries. but otherwise after maybe 1-2 attempts to figure out what their principle moveset was, thought the main game was fair. much like 2018, i felt some of the swarm mob encounters to be harder than the actual boss fights.
but some of the berserker fights were a real pain in the ass. i imagine the king will be a challenge like sigrun was.

i didnt get this sense, though i do think the parry window was possibly less forgiving than 2018. there also are "perfect parries" if done at the very last possible moment. if you used the Dauntless shield (geared toward parry), you could tell because a regular parry would charge your shield to yellow while perfect parries did red
The amount of times I died due to getting stun locked was crazy.
this almost always happened if i didnt properly parry a yellow attack, as those are "unblockable". if you try to block it, or you parry too soon, it stuns you. but easiest way to get out of that is to quickly pop spartan rage while in that vulnerable state.
I may be wrong on this but also the iframes in Ragnarok work differently. You can actually get hit while in an animation like when you use runic or rage mode. The berserkers and umm the last "secret" boss are the biggest headaches when it comes to that.
iirc you always could get hit while going into a runic animation. some specific ones granted immunity in the first game. one of the blades runic attacks where you run with the shield, for example. but yes, berserkers capitalize on that stuff more than most. my bigger issue is that in this game, at seemingly random times, my runic attacks wouldnt stun an enemy. so while my attack has been going on for 1.5-2 seconds already and im locked in the animation dude just walks right through it and hits me. it didnt seem like an intended mechanic, as even berskerkers like 90-95% of the time get stunned by every runic attack as long as its hitting them
as far as rage, i havent had that experience as long as you use the regular "Fury" rage. but i did notice that you still take damage while using the Valor version if there is an incoming attack, so i basically never used it. i didnt try Wrath out much

Not all side quest give you a trophy. The only place you need to 100% is Vanaheim.
The important factors are in getting the legendary chests, Normir chests for health and rage, getting all Ravens and killing all berserkers as they drop hilts which count for the collectors trophy.
Those are the hardest, grindiest trophies in the game. The rest are self revealing once you look up the trophy name and it's description.

It must have been that then. The shield I used for most of my playthrough was the bashing one. The double Tap L and Kratos would rush the enemie's most powerful attacks which broke them out of their animation for a quick combo.
One thing I noticed is that in this game, the armor and buffs you are given aren't nearly as powerful as in the first one. They all come post game. The Berserker King armor is OP and the runic is almost game breaking. But you have to pretty much be level 9 to fight him otherwise you'll have a bad time.
Game+ should be fun. I'll definitely crank up the difficulty then.

im pretty sure i only have one berserker left before unlocking the King. the 1v1 berserker fights were all fine. died to all of them at least once, but most started feeling pretty predictable, much like valkyries. only ones that truly felt frustrating were the gank fights. the 2v1, the 3v1, and to a slightly lesser degree, the one that kept spawning other minions
mechanically, the 2v1 was not that hard (usually only one was attacking you at a time), but those guys were at a fairly high level when i first tried fighting them, so everything was killing me in one hit. the 3v1 took me a long time to figure out a viable strategy. was by far the most frustrating thing in the game

i found the actual gameplay mechanics, combat, etc to be pretty good tbh
but the game overall was way too big for its own good, and side quests were almost never interesting. after some point i was just spamming x to skip through dialogue because it was just getting tiring and never worth it. and there was little point TO doing side content and leveling up (or getting better gear) because the enemies always scale with your level no matter what, and once you find a basic tier weapon 1-2 levels above your legend tier one, its already outclassing it :lol

well deserved. its quite literally just god of war 2.0, a pure upgrade from 2018 in just about every way imaginable. only blemish in the game is that at some point there is some sidequest fatigue. i wouldnt go so far to say that its assassins creed-esque, but it had a little bit of that feel in one of the realms.

Only disappointing thing was I couldn't choose Tifa as my party leader in the main boss fight, though guess it makes sense for story reasons that Cloud would be it. callisto is a decent game. i never played the OG deadspace so i cant compare but in a vacuum its not a bad game at all. the gripes about combat i thought were deserved until i played it a bit, and i realized it's just getting used to the mechanics and not being a badass space marine that is supposed to just wreck shit. people complaining about the length of the game also - i think the length is fine. it's not supposed to be a giant open world game, its a linear survival horror game. biggest gripes are with the graphics/framerate issues and lack of performance/resolution mode and the overly long death animations. also would suggest if you're tempted to buy this game, do yourself a favor and wait til it's on sale for 30-40 bucks

luckily warzone 2 looks like complete dogshit so i can finally break out of the COD black hole and start attacking my backlog which has largely gone untouched for over a year. once i get back home, gonna finish up the 100%/platinum on ragnarok then just replay it again on give me god of war difficulty. then i dno... have a lot of options. still have to attack dark souls 2/3 at some point (want to play those before elden ring). days gone. cyberpunk. nioh. still never picked up TLOU2 either
Time to play upgraded Witcher 3. I played roughly 40% through before I got bored/side tracked so this gives me an excuse to fired it back up.

The wife got me a PS5 for Christmas. I probably would've still waited longer otherwise. I set it up this afternoon and I already don't know what to play. :lol I downloaded Ragnarok, installed Miles Morales (which I've had for a while on PS4 and never played), and she also bought me Forbidden West. I want to play all of them, but nothing is really jumping out at me right now. I know Miles is short, but I need to find some other short/linear stuff to ease myself back into gaming. I feel kind of burnt out of big open world games even though I've played next to nothing in close to a year.

Modern Warfare 2 is a decent upgrade from Vanguard. I like a lot of the changes they made for multiplayer (hated the team MVP and "play of the game" BS). Campaign seems like a downgrade compared to the previous iteration of MW though, although I'm not too far into it yet

The Astro’s Playroom game that comes with the console is pretty good if you want to ease into it and get a good feel of the DualSense superior haptics. It’s fun to play as well.
You got a good haul of games. I would add Ratchet and Clank and obviously Elden Ring if you haven’t played it yet.

They’re a great palate cleanser after playing a long game. These little Lego games are fun and even addictive because of their short and fun level designs. Easy to pick up and put down again.
The Skywalker Saga is pretty neat. Like 9 games in 1.

Valkyrie queen fight was more difficult than berserker king guy. He was definitely an easier guy to learn his moves, left way more openings imo… but he did hit like an absolute truck. In hindsight should have fought him first because the relic you get from beating him is insane and would probably be useful against the queen.

Game is a lot harder than I remember wtf. I'm getting my groove back though.
Game really punishes you if you try to be an idiot and take on 10 enemies at the same time. I've gotten annoyed at clearing out huge camps stealthily just so the last enemy comes out of nowhere and stab me. That's led to some bad in game choices. lol
I fucking love the PS5 man. There is virtually no loading whatsoever. You press X to get into the game app and you're already on the main menu in under 3 seconds. Fast travel also breaks the game because its a lot easier to do it versus riding your horse to the location.

Yeah PS5 is such an enormous upgrade over PS4. Even today more than two years after launch and with gpu mining dead it would cost you $800 to make a gaming PC of similar power, and that's if you pirate Windows. And you still don't as fast of load times as PS5 since the first game to implement DirectStorage on PC will be Forspoken.

Looks like a pretty busy year for new games. Definitely picking up Ishin Remastered too. On PS5 Final Fantasy XVI looks better every time I see it so am expecting it to review pretty well and have a pre-order for it, and Stellar Blade really looks like it could be something awesome. Then you know Insomniac is going to make Spiderman 2 a real banger. Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is probably going to be a must play on Switch and I think Bethesda is going to come correct with Starfield. I'll probably sign up for a month or two of Game Pass when that comes out. Pretty interested to see how Arkane does with Redfall too. Then when Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 comes out it's a Day 1 buy, though kind of expecting that one in early 2024 instead of late 2023. Have a free copy of Dead Island 2 that came with my gpu too, though honestly expecting that game to be pretty shitty.
Gonna be a lot of good shit like Dead Space and System Shock that I doubt I'll have time to get to this year. Not sure on Forspoken, I'll have to try the demo at some point. Doubt I'll bother with Hogwarts unless it really kills in reviews.

Wow Forspoken got a 6/10 from IGN. A game really has to be shit to not get at least an 8 from them, a 6 translates to more like a 3/10 or 4/10 for someone playing the game as opposed to a reviewer that needs to hype games so they get ad money from the publishers whose games they review.

Not surprised at all. I played the demo and it was complete ass. And I'm someone who absolutely loved FFXV overall. But man, what an empty world and repetitive combat system
Valkyrie Elysium was pretty underwhelming also. Then you have the complete utter failure that was babylon's fall. IDK what's going on at Square Enix lately but they really need to make FFXVI a banger otherwise they are quickly losing their credibility and becoming another Ubisoft/343/etc

She was the reason I thought Forspoken had an outside chance of being amazing. Figured it would either be incredible or dogshit with no middle ground in between, seems like it was the latter without having Naughty Dog behind her. It was pretty clear that would be the case when we found out yesterday how few review codes Square Enix gave out.

from a pure gameplay perspective, ragnarok is clearly superior. also bigger, has more things to do, significantly better enemy/boss variety. but it clearly stands on the shoulders of 2018 (as it should, thats how you make a masterful sequel).
but i also felt 2018 had better pacing. story was more tightly knit. i think i had more of a sense of amazement upon playing and completing 2018 than i did with ragnarok. but yeah, 2 of the best games i've ever played.
i already played through ragnarok twice. once on give me no mercy, once on give me god of war. did 100% runs both times. just waiting for NG+ before i go back for a third playthrough

Do you play games until you reach the end or do you go full completionist?
I have developed a nasty compulsive habit of platting each games I play which takes me anywhere from a few weeks to months fo complete.
Which is also why I only buy top tier games these days. No point in doing everything a game has to offer if the game is not worth it. (AC Valhalla)

I'm a completionist if it's an amazing game like Elden Ring or God of War. Control is good, maybe 8/10 good, but not completionist good. I'll just do the main story probably.

Have you already bought Control? If not, you need to get the Control Ultimate Edition to get the PS5 patch with 60 fps and (30 fps) raytracing modes. It's on sale right now for $14 on PSN. If you get the regular version of Control you only get the 30 fps PS4 version with no RT. Tough call whether I'd go with 1440p60 and no RT or the 1440p30 with RT mode on PS5 (currently playing 1080p60 with console level RT on PC).

Yeah I bought it for PS5 in that $12 sale too. Then got an RX 6700 XT for my PC and ended up playing it there instead lol. Mostly because I had until January 30th to return the card and I wanted to really stress test it with a hard raytracing application to make sure it was working right.

But I’m taking a break right now. My next game will be Ishin and I already know that will be a grind so I’m taking a break before and after playing the game.

IDK, I was watching a guy stream it yesterday and it didn't look like anything special. Wondering if this is a case like Deathloop where all the reviewers regarded the game way higher than the general public did. IGN and Gamespot and all the other big reviewers were giving it 10/10 like it was Ocarina of Time 2021 while most gamers seemed to think it was a weaker effort from Arkane and not on par with the Dishonored games.

Only got to play for about 15-20 minutes last night, but I'm excited to dive in further. I've heard that the main quest line is fairly long and you have to do it with all four houses to get all the collectable and access to the full slate of bonus content.
Regarding the boycott attempt... Its laughable at best. JKR has nothing to do with the development of this game. Sure it's set in her world, but she has had ZERO involvement in the design and development of this game. This ain't her work, idk why it's so hard for people to understand that.
According to r/pcmasterrace, the game has some performance issues once you get to Hogwarts, even on fairly decent rigs at the recommended settings. I'm a bit anxious to see how it goes with my pc once I get there.

Wow look at the difference between 3060 Ti and 6700 XT (both without RT). Shows you how trash Nvidia's drivers are. Nvidia's DX12 driver overhead causing a Ryzen 7700X with DDR5-6000 to bottleneck the 3060 Ti hard at 1440p. What a difference from DX11 where AMD driver was horrible and led to so much cpu bottlenecking.

It's very cringy and repetitive. Voice acting is subpar, whiny and then it's repeated just about every 30 seconds where it becomes annoying. It's also a huge world but it really only becomes traversable once you picked up a ton of upgrades.
It's not really a AAA game, but if you don't have anything better to play, it can be fun for a few hours.

I'll have to check that. Ended up canceling my order for the potentiometer fix add in boards since my right thumbstick drifts both up and down and that fix I posted is only useful for when you have one specific area the stick wants to re-center to. I'm going to have to turn on the accessibility settings for the puzzles since hitting the three pots with the axe in a short time period to open nornir chests is next to impossible when you have stick drift. The easy one in Alfheim took me like 15 attempts to get.

Mine sometimes it starts looking up quickly, other times it drifts downward slowly when aiming the axe. It's not bad enough to be a problem in combat but for aiming axe throws in puzzles and with ravens it's a real pain. Fucking cheap ass Sony. Moving the right stick a couple of times gets it back to center but when you're racing against the clock that really isn't an option.

The draugr holes can be a bit annoying but only because you're fighting four scrubs and one boss at once in a small arena but if you can get the four scrub draugrs killed quickly enough the boss draugr isn't very hard.

Niglet, you need a controller? Have like 4 lying around here, just tell me what color you want.

Been playing Dark Pictures Anthology... Ashes to ashes was the first I played, it was sorta fun, like a choose your own adventure type of thing.
Also have Like a Dragon: Ishin downloaded, probably will play it afterwards.

I mean, they could've made the triggers or buttons shitty too... It's overall a solid controller, but the stick drift issue was known since the DualShock.
Disagree on it being a solid controller, as the stick drift is way more of a downside than the upside of any feature they added. The most important thing is the controller should work for controlling your player, not having haptic feedback or a gyro or any of the other gimmicks in it. Dreamcast controllers 25 years ago actually had hall effect sticks; inexcusable for DualSense to not have them when Sony wants to charge $70 apiece. Honestly looks like they're planned to break. I have a bunch of old beat up and heavily used twenty year-old DualShock 2's and 25 year-old DualShock 1's and none of them has stick drift.

No console (or most PC manufacturers for that matter) uses them. IIRC, the only two to ever use them were the Dreamcast and a custom controller for the Sega Saturn. No DualShock ever used them.
They're more expensive because you have to license them, and they also are harder to produce in quantities. They're also not a drop-in replacement for the potentiometer type.
I'm not saying they shouldn't have better sticks, they do. Heck, even if they don't want to license hall sensors, they could at least try to develop their own tech that doesn't have that problem. This was certainly an opportunity missed.
I think there's also a class action going on with this drift stuff.

I mean this isn't a hard problem either. Potentiometer style use contacts that wear out, thus the drift. Hall sensor uses magnets that don't touch.
There's no reason Sony can't develop something like a led + light sensor (two areas they excel at) and do an optical version, for example.

Shit I need to get in on that suit to get by $3.28 check in ten years. And I don't care if licensing costs Sony, they're already price gouging us at $70. For that price we should be getting deluxe features like Hall effect sticks instead of poorly engineered crap that doesn't last.
RE4 Remake looks gorgeous. Third trailer dropped the other day. Graphics look insane.

tbh, I'm kinda surprised they're that much. They go for $45 to employees, and they normally only get a 10%-20% discount.

woah thats way worse than i had it. my left stick had a pretty subtle drift to the left. was just enough to get my character to strafe sometimes. guess with it being the right stick its a lot worse for throwing stuff
So do you find fury or valor better for spartan rage? I remember GOW2018 healing a lot once I had my spartan rage leveled up but is valor really amazing for healing when you get it leveled up, especially to be worth the tradeoff vs healing and getting extra hits in on a boss?

Valor is by far the worst imho except maybe very specific encounters. Fury automatically staggers every enemy around you without having to nail some kind of parry timing

Even if you spam Valor, I don't think it recovers even one hit worth of damage during a boss fight.

Valor is pitiful.
Is it Fury or Wrath the one that heals you as you land hits on enemies anyways? Valor was largely redundant in my opinion.
in other gaming news, the studio that made Forspoken is literally been deleted by its parent company, Square Enix. Lmao

not to mention a good % of the time you end up taking damage during the animation (does not give i-frames unless you use it as a parry), so whatever amount you did heal is negated by the hit you just took.
i dont want to get into spoilers but there was only really one encounter where i really felt valour was needed. was a boss fight where attacking them with Fury wasnt really an option. against 99% of enemies, fury is just better imo since a) you are invulnerable, b) it automatically staggers everybody so its functionally also an "oh shit" button, c) can help you finish a strong enemy knowing you wont take damage and can go all out, d) you still heal a decent amount from using it anyway
with that said wrath had some good utility as well

Lunda's armor set in Ragnarok is freaking killer even if you have to fight barehanded since you get all kinds of bonuses once you inflict poison and have a high chance of inflicting it from barehand hits. Wonder if I keep upgrading this if it'll be good for late game too.
Loving the shooting mechanic on Control. Reminds me of Infamous First Light/Second Son fluidity.

the way this game is made, literally every armor set scales up just fine for endgame, depending on whether you like its effects. even the first armor sets you are offered. at first you are basically offered a strength vs vitality set. if you level the strength set (vidars set or something) all the way up to level 9 it has the best strength stat in the game so you can still go off on people and annihilate bosses if you know what you're doing.
lunda's set is good, but personally the fist/shield combat is ass in this game. had its own full skill tree in the first game. it still poisons people pretty quickly so its a solid set regardless.
i ended up loving builds based on gaining permafrost/immolation, etc. i think that armor set was calling undying pyres or something. built those meters up very quickly. combined that with the grips/handles/pommels that were called "nine realms" which trigger a realm shift anytime you use the L1 + Triangle thing. had a ton of fun with that build until getting the super hard hitting armor from berserkers
