yeah there's a window in the menu where you can buy shit, but i'd never spend a penny on microtransactions. only time i'd spend money on a game post-purchase is legit gameplay DLC (or back in COD days, map packs)

Alright nevermind. The level scaling is just adjustable, you aren't able to disable it completely.
yeah, that problem isn't necessarily difficulty. i chose the hard setting (not nightmare) because i dont want this to be a game where i just solo the whole game without having to learn.
but aside from reaching a certain threshold level to encounter a new area, there's no actual benefit from doing side content. no advantage in leveling up. all you do is make your epic/legendary gear outclassed and then have to spend resources to upgrade them (or stumble upon more epic/legendary gear). its stupid to find nice epic gear, spend hundreds/thousands of gold to upgrade it to your current level, and then 20 minutes later its completely outclassed by some random common club i picked up from a random enemy
its just poorly designed, not "hard." think they should have just stuck with the skill tree thing and have you encounter better gear in later sections (i think god of war nailed the leveling system in that regard)
i do think their skill tree is well thought out and still has good RPG elements since i dont think its really feasible/possible to unlock the full tree as opposed to other skill-tree based games like god of war/horizon/tomb raider. you still have to somewhat choose a play-style and optimize your build. the balance of having passive abilities and assigned abilities is pretty cool. i've been putting most of my skill points into passive skills at this point. since you can only assign 4 abilities (non-bow), it makes no use to unlock 5-6 different combat abilities. with that said, i'm still story-locked from upgrading some of my other stuff like the shield break (it says i need to progress further to upgrade it such that i can even break large shields)
my only issue with the skill system so far is the "critical assassination" which makes me feel like the regular assassinate attack is just inadequate

I thought mercy kill was already available in the original persona 5. I swear I'd crash into weaker enemies without having to fight them in mementos but they're saying it's a new feature. I don't really understand.
Just found out you can do the same shit in palaces in P5R. Eg if you're running at a weaker enemy from behind and hit them with your grappling hook it insta-kills them just like when driving Morgana in Mementos.

I don't know, I haven't gotten to the new semester yet. I do think it's quite a bit better than the base game since you can still do shit at night without Morgana hassling you to go to bed most of the time. Most of the palaces and boss fights are a little better, though they made the Okumura boss fight even more annoying. It's also a much easier platinum. Vanilla P5 took me three playthroughs to platinum but I should be able to do it in one on P5R. The one gripe I have about the game is the battle theme "Take Over" isn't very good compared to the original game's battle theme "Last Surprise." So I have played at least half of the game with the Gekkoukan High uniforms from Persona 3 so that it plays "Mass Destruction" from Persona 3 as the battle theme.

I forgot one of the things they added is being able to take the twins on dates, which are pretty funny. Then you can do lots of social things with your team to level up things like technical damage or baton pass power ups.
I'm pretty close to the end of the main story, just getting ready to fight Sae Niijima's shadow. Oh I also forgot you can't cheese the reaper in flu season in Mementos any more for experience and money.

For anyone who has a PS4, the Playstation Store is giving away the Uncharted: Nathan Drake Collection and Journey for free from tomorrow until May 5th, and they're yours to keep. E.g., the games don't expire May 5th, that's just the last date you can claim them. The Uncharted collection is outstanding and Journey is an interesting casual game that lots of people seem to love (I'd give it maybe a 7/10, so pretty good).

On Odyssey, what's the point in doing the Athens/Sparta battles? Once you conquer one side or the other in a given area, you can turn around the do it again for the other side. There is no faction system for the player, and there doesn't seem to be any story consequences, so the only reason to spend time on this is to get some marginal gear. Am I missing something?

I played a couple hours of nioh last night and I enjoyed the combat. I played around with all the different types of weapons but ultimatey decided to go with odachi and the tonfa beause I just enjoyed playing with both. It was confusing to start because this game has 10X more the command and controls of Sekrio and It felt "crowded" contol wise specially trying to change weapons and stance. I love the contrast between the tonfa and odachi honestly.

Yeah the first AC sucks, same four or five missions over and over again. I gotta say I couldn't get further than two hours into AC III though. Ubisoft has given away so much of this series free over the last couple of years now on PC. I have II, III, Black Flag, and Unity free on my UPlay account. I should have done the Stadia trial to get Odyssey free too. Oh well. I don't have a gpu capable of playing anything on my PC right now anyways though after my 970 died and I don't want to buy an overpriced gpu at the end of a console gen when really good shit will be coming out later this year for cheaper.

You didn't like AC3? I thought the antagonist for the Templars was an awesome character, and the hunting stuff was pretty cool. Stealth is incredibly difficult in AC3 imo especially around the Confederate soldiers. Other than that, it's a decent game and introduces naval combat which was what made Black Flag great.

There are so many texture issues, and the hair looks like ass honestly. there are some things that look impressive but there are so many texture issues that it's really hard to ignore. but the game itself and the gameplay are top notch. im hoping they'll fix a lot of the texture issues with updates. i wish it had come out on PC instead though

I've simplified a lot by simply playing only with odachi and using the front pose. It's nice that the depth is there for those that want it, but you can also level up nicely offering weapons and everything else you pick up, tbh

Did you try any other weapons? I'm honestly not sure what to spend on skill wise and it seems we already get samurai skill points to begin with without choosing the samurai swords in the beginning.
I'm already thinking about playing with the axe.
The tonfa is really nice in low stance. Just kills all the human and low level enemies very quickly and its so easy to block in this stance.
I was watching IGN review and they said you can choose how to fight..You can do long range too.
But after playing a decent amount, how in the world can anyone enjoy nioh 2 playing with a bow or any long range weapon? Combat is probably the strongest selling point of this game and you want people to play long range :lol

I started with Switchglaive, it's a cool looking weapon, but I was getting my ass kicked. The odachi is nice in that you can hit from relatively far range, and gives you more time to step back if needed. I tried the Axe too, but while they cause more damage, they're slow.
Then again, different bosses and enemies are easier to take down with different weapons, even ranged. Some of them are really tough hand to hand, and maintaining distance can be a bitch.
Also in later levels, it's just easier to snipe down some of the easy enemies with an arrow to move along quicker without risking health.
BTW, I think that's the digital deluxe version you got. You should've a theme to download and can also redeem the Demon Horde weapons from the "Boons" option in any shrine. I think Season Pass is included also.

Did you ever play the first? Wondering how this one compares. I liked the first Nioh, but I didn't think the control was as good as say Bloodborne. Does Nioh 2 have any cheap deaths? There was one infuriating stage in the first Nioh that was filled with instant death pits like it was an old NES game. And then another stage the enemies would cast sloth on you to basically make you a sitting duck which also felt cheap. Still overall Nioh 1 was a pretty good game though.

I didn't play nioh 1 but i read in terms of combat it's very similar control wise. Bloodborne control vs nioh 2 is much better. Like I said earlier, Nioh 2 control map can feel very overcrowded. Changing stance, changing weapons can get very confusing.

just XP and loot. zero consequences. this game packed in so much shit/content that does absolutely nothing.
im usually fairy neurotic with side quests in these types of games, and making sure i exhaust side quests before continuing with main story, until i unlock more side quests... but in this game its just ridiculous. this game has what seems like hundreds of randomly created, generic side quests (the ones with the little black markers on the map) which is somebody saying "i need you to kill those soliders/bandits/animals"... and then you do it. and then alexios says the same fucking line every time. "i took care of them. every last one of them."
so i've completely stopped doing all side quests with the exception of the ones with the yellow markers, since those actually have some narrative depth to them.

That's kind of where I'm at, and I haven't even uncovered a fourth of the map. Most of the quests/notice boards do nothing except clog my menu up. I accept most of them anyway, but don't actively try to finish them. I just let them finish on their own because they're all "kill x amount of bandits" or whatever.

You mean they made it single player and added NPCs and a storyline? Not sure what else they could've done... graphics and gameplay haven't changed in twelve years or so.
Could have fixed the bugs too, though maybe leaving them makes it more like Fallout 3/NV, at least the console versions.

Thanks for the offer but I'll most likely just stick with playing PS4 and Switch until Navi 2 and Ampere come out, and then I'll reassess whether I want to game on PC or buy a Series X or PS5.

might play Persona 5 royal...
I liked the original enough to do it again.
OK I just finished the game. The base game is pretty similar just with some quality of life improvements in Royal like still being able to study, craft, train, read books, watch movies, play games, etc to buff stats at times when Morgana would force you to sleep in the original game. So it makes it much easier to train your stats without missing out on leveling up your confidants. The two new characters (Kasumi and the school counselor) both have really interesting stories and Royal spends a lot more time with Akechi and expounding his story than P5 did. Guns are also good weapons in Royal since your ammo resets every fight other than your special shots. Whereas guns were pretty useless in the original P5. I don't like the P5R battle theme nearly as much as the P5 battle theme, but overall P5R is a step up in every other way. There are also three secret boss fights in the game whereas there was only one in P5. But only one of the secret boss fights in P5R is available in a first playthrough, and it wasn't as good as the one in P5. But the P5 boss fight is in P5R also.
P5R was marketed as having a new semester, but it's really just one extra month and a new palace, just like Persona 4 Golden was vs Persona 4. It's a pretty good palace and boss fight, though I still think Kamoshida's Palace is the best one in the game. Persona 4 Golden's extra palace sucked. The story is pretty wild in the new semester.
I wouldn't say it's a must play for someone who played P5 unless they're huge fans of P5. I rated P5 a 9.5/10 so I'd probably put P5R at a 9.6/10. No way the new material pushes it to a 10/10 game IMO. For anyone who hasn't played either though I'd definitely recommend P5R over P5 since the most frustrating part of the game (Morgana making you sleep all the time) has been mostly eliminated. Pretty good, worth picking up if you want to play Persona again. But not something I'd say to stick at the front of your must play list.
Also forgot: Persona 5 Royal is a much much easier platinum than Persona 5 is. Took me three playthroughs to finally get the plat in P5 but it was pretty easy to get on a first playthrough in P5R. Also cheesing the reaper in flu season doesn't work any more in P5R. :lol

P5 is a really hard plat though. You have to do things like read every book in one playthrough, beat every video game in one playthrough (and some are pretty hard to get the button combinations), beat the secret boss, complete the entire persona compendium, max all confidants in one playthrough, do every Mementos request in one playthrough, watch every DVD in one playthrough, etc. Took me about 400 hours in three playthroughs to plat.

Looks very doable to me from this. I missed quite a few of them. Over 20 but most of them are very obtainable if you know what you're looking for. Obviously my first playthrough was completely blind so I didn't know to pass the baton 3 times in a fight for a trophy for example.

Time is super tight in the original P5 to max out confidants and read books + play games + watch DVDs in one playthrough. I think I had to do the third playthrough to get the DVDs watched + books read. Also you can only do the secret boss fight on a second playthrough or later, and you better have some really killer personas built up with lots of elemental resistances to have much chance of winning that boss fight unless you set it to easy or something. P5 was definitely the hardest platinum I have gotten. Which is funny because P5R is maybe the easiest platinum I have gotten.

Oh yeah another reason I had to do a third playthrough of P5 for the plat is I got locked out of the secret boss fight on my second playthrough because I tried to do it after December 18th or 19th (forget which day).

Jesus Christ the loading times times on Assassin's Creed Odyssey are unbearable. Every time you enter a conversation or pick up a quest you have to fucking load. And the cinematics aren't even that good... almost reminiscent of Dragon Age, just two people staring at each other with poorly animated facial/mouth movements. It makes you really appreciate how seamless everything is in GoW and RDR2.

I think Flower is probably the most fun game from that studio that made Journey. To me Journey actually looks better on PS3 than PS4 because there is some quirk of the PS3 that makes the sand render way differently than it does on PS4. Even though PS4 doubles the framerate it completely changes the art style. When it comes to casual indie games though I think the best one on PS4 is What Remains of Edith Finch? Pretty cool storytelling and some creative minigames. I'd say the best indie game on the system I have played is probably Guacamelee, but it's hard and is definitely designed to induce that NES level frustration in parts of it.

Now playing Persona 5 Royal in Japanese, and Morgana is hilarious in the original version of the game. For instance, Morgana always calls himself ワガハイ = wagahai = I (MY LORDSHIP), where I added the caps since that's what it means to write a regular Japanese word in katakana. The normal way of writing of wagahai is 吾輩. In Japanese you almost never use pronouns so not only is Morgana calling attention to himself by practically screaming an elite usage of the word I, but even saying it period which draws attention to yourself. The wagahai comes from a famous Japanese book from the early 1900s called 吾輩は猫である= I am a Cat about a cat from a regular Japanese family that has somehow convinced himself his owners are Japanese royalty. :lol
Morgana always calls Ann by アン殿 = an dono = something like Duchess Ann.
Another thing that's really funny is a phrase universally used at the end of a day of work in Japan is お疲れ様 = otsukare sama which means "thank you for your hard work" though it's literally something more like "you must be tired." It's a universally used phrase. But then sometimes when you finish killing some enemies Morgana will say ご苦労様 = gokurou sama which also means "thank you for your hard work", but is something a superior would tell a subordinate. So fucking Morgana is talking down to you after battle. :lmao

Always using wagahai goes beyond using the wrong keigo though. It's kind of being an attention-whore like "I do this, I think that, I'm going here..." since using a pronoun to refer to yourself in Japanese is calling attention onto yourself, putting special emphasis on you. And then wagahai is a really arrogant way to refer to oneself. But it's a reference to that famous Japanese book. It makes Morgana pretty funny. Now I want to post a Morgana spoiler for revenge. :lol

So I just finished AC Odyssey (well, there's more to do, but I finished the main storyline and anything else I actually wanted to accomplish). The main story was fine, the gameplay was fun... but I'm still confused by the modern day stuff. And to make matters worse, the modern day/Atlantis storyline takes hours to complete and it ends in a cliffhanger for a DLC that I have no intention of purchasing. Had I known that I was going to get cockblocked by a paywall, I would've saved some time.
Anyway... why are the AC games still using this framing device? Does Ubisoft even have a plan? I played the first game at release and thought the concept was cool. As Desmond gained more and more ability through AC 1 and the Ezio trilogy (and learning more about the first civilization), I thought they were prepping for an entirely modern-day AC where you play as Desmond... then they killed him in AC 3. I stopped playing AC games and now in Odyssey I see that storyline has not gone anywhere in four or five games. From reading online, there's fucking comic books to fill players in on what's going on. I don't get it. It just seems like a waste of time at this point. It's more of an annoyance than anything when you're playing and get pulled out of the the animus. Just drop that gimmick already.
Now I want to post a Morgana spoiler for revenge. :lol

If you want to get the new content in the game you have to do the following two things:
1. Get your school counselor Maruki up to a level 9 confidant by around November 18th or so
2. Get the new girl Kasumi up to a level 5 confidant by mid December or so (5 is the max you can get her until the new year)
You'll also probably really want to get Akechi up to level 8 by mid November. All three of these characters have really cool stories in Royal that weren't there in the original.
Here is the counselor Maruki at the 1:25 mark of the reveal video they did at Persona Super Live 2019. Also there are some really funny Showtime Attacks like you see at the 1:41 mark and the 2:20 mark. And :lol arrogant Morgana can be heard saying wagahai a lot of times in the video.

i picked up the gold edition when it was on sale for $25, comes with all the DLC and remasters of AC 3 and liberations.
i think im close to the end of the story, but have saved the DLC for after that.
i agree that the modern parts are stupid at this point. AC 1 and 2 only prior to this one, and there was at least some progression with desmond's story. i know i've missed a huge chunk of games, but there doesnt really seem to be any immersion to those parts of the game, especially since in Odyssey, there is no concept of assassins or templars like there were in the earlier games. in that sense it barely even feels like assassins creed (no hidden blade). just some open world game.

I watched some youtube videos and it seems like one of the DLCs is more of an ending than the core game is, with some ties to other AC games. Which is weird also, the main storyline is almost a side note... Alexio/Kassandra trying to reunite his/her family and rid Greece of the cult threat. Anything having to do with the overall AC lore or the Isu is only in DLC or optional content.

That's why I used to love Sony's E3 presentations. Everyone else would just show trailers that were 90% cutscenes but in Sony's presentations you'd see actual realtime gameplay to see what the games looked like in action. Now that they're going to State of Play videos though it's the same cutscene trailers everyone else does.

In the scene where they call the maid service to come over to that empty apartment, which they call "Operation Maidwatch" in English, in Japanese they call it メードルキーンぐパーティ、or "Meedo Ruukingu Paatii" (Maid Looking Party). God Japanese kills me hearing English words pronounced in the Japanese syllabary. :lol

:lmao DLC straight up has a new "Cultist" menu with virtually the same mechanic with a different group called "Order of the Ancient"
even with the DLC, this game is quantity over quality

It was a fun time waster and all... but I think I'm going to go back to ignoring the AC series. The reasons I enjoyed the early AC games are no longer there or have been played out, and there are far better open world games out there.

I'm not going to play Cyberpunk until there is a next gen version with raytracing, hopefully in 2021. Because there is still good stuff to play this year but 2021 and 2022 are probably going to be shitty gaming years since the first couple of years in a new generation usually are. ペルソナ5スクランブル・ザファントムストライカーズ is a different game, it's an action game that is a sequel to the original Persona 5. Kind of like a Dynasty Warriors kind of game but in the Persona 5 universe. I played the demo and it was surprisingly awesome. Usually the Persona spinoffs are pretty boring like the Arena series and Dancing series. Only problem is my Japanese is nowhere even close to fluent so I can only really understand about half the sentences in it.
Spiderman I'm thinking I have waited this long anyways and hopefully it'll get a 60 fps patch to go along with the load times being zeroed out.

Skyrim is kind of a tough call, but I think you'll like it since you're a graphics nut. It looks old for sure, but I'll take art style and environment over graphical fidelity any day, and Skyrim is a beauitfully designed world. Sometimes I would just like to go climb mountains and see the world instead of fighting shit. I don't think it has aged as well as Dark Souls and it's not even in the same universe for combat. Combat is like medievil Fallout without VATS and focused mostly on close combat (though you can be an archer too, I usually am). As well as magic. But the environent is really immersive, the story is awesome, and the music is great too. I think it's a really impressive world that's the real star of the show.
It's funny, Bioshock is even older, but Bioshock's graphics absolutely hold up today 13 years later.

Still, pretty fucking impressive considering it was an early last-gen game. Bioshock's lighting really helps it here. It's such a dark game but I couldn't imagine it working nearly as well any other way. Bioshock Infinite is a much brighter game but I think the graphics hold up on it too. Infinite was a little beyond the capabilities of the 360 and PS3 though considering how much they had to dumb down textures. Should definitely be awesome on PS4 considering how easy it was to run on PC.

I have been studying Japanese for a year so playing Japanese games with Japanese voices (and Japanese text when I can) is an easy way to put some study hours in while playing shit. One of the reasons I'm really interested in doing so is there are two Yakuza samurai games (龍が如く見参 and 龍が如く維新) that are supposed to be incredible but will never get localization outside of Japan. They take characters like Kiryu, Majima, Ryudo, and so on and put them in the time of the Meiji Restoration and they're badass samurai brawlers that play like the mainline Yakuza games in the same engines.
Here is 龍が如く維新!(Like a Dragon: Restoration)

Even comparing it to AC seems kind of out of line on second thought. I haven't played any of the current gen AC, but last gen AC at least had a lot of interesting vertical exploration. This looks like poor man's AC. Also not a fan of the slow motion kills trying to copy the style of the movie 300. I went and watched it again because the Playstation live stream was pretty awful and this still looks like a 6/10 game to me. Passable, but nothing I'm particularly interested in. Even though I'm hugely interested in games about Japan. :lol
So far 2020 looks like a dud. Persona 5 Royal was awesome but Ghost of Tsushima looks like crap, Dying Light 2 probably doesn't come out this year, and TLOU Part II sounds a bit disappointing. The only must buy for me this year after P5R is Yakuza 7, which looks incredible in everything I have seen about it. And hopefully Cyberpunk lives up to the hype. Probably the only other games I'm hyped about are the rumored Switch remasters of Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. :lol
EDIT: I guess if we count Japan-only games, Persona 5 Scramble is a pretty awesome 2020 game too. Too bad no announcement of western localization yet.

The Pros
Cuztomization and exploration seems decent. Ghost mode definitly looks interesting.
Cons
Really have no idea how fluid the sword combat is. No idea who is initiating slow down and very little info really.
Could be a 10/10 game if combat is good with great narrative..
Most likely
an 8.5./9 game
As low as
7/10 though if the combat is trash and intenresting.

To me it looks remarkably similar to Odyssey.. like the way they describe exploration. Odyssey attempted something similar, they make you look for visual cues and marking objectives with your eagle instead of just following waypoints around. To me it didn't work real well and you were constantly staring at the map anyway. The combat also looks similar though the enemies seem less spongy. Even the mundane task of collecting plants/wood has the exact same visual style.

Just finished AC Odyssey including both DLCs
im not going to pretend to understand the “modern” storyline whatsoever. I thought the combat in the 2nd DLC was deeper because enemies could fuck with your adrenaline meter and the bosses were actually somewhat challenging (i played on Hard, not Nightmare).
The game as a whole is the epitome of quantity over quality. IMO has zero replay value and felt like a chore to play at times. Gameplay as a whole was mind numbingly repetitive and voluminous, with virtually no narrative value to keep you engaged. Great way to kill time during a pandemic but not a good game imo. Not a game I’d particularly recommend unless you love open world games with icon littered maps and very button mashy combat. Very shallow rpg elements besides the skill trees that somewhat get you to commit to specific combat styles. Choices have little impact. Leveling up does nothing. Gear is instantly obsolete.
Just bad.

im not going to pretend to understand the “modern” storyline whatsoever. I thought the combat in the 2nd DLC was deeper because enemies could fuck with your adrenaline meter and the bosses were actually somewhat challenging (i played on Hard, not Nightmare).

What I found odd too was that they took out any thought or planning to the climbing/parkour. You just hold down X/A/or whatever and climb up any smooth surface. And then after lvl 20, there's no fall damage. IIRC, you had to plan your routes a little better in the older games.

playing through BioShock for the first time, it's quite good. it actually feels quite a bit like Portal when it comes to the art/design of the world, the telling of the story through audiotapes, etc. very good stuff
as for the gameplay, the shooting mechanics are very basic, but the different weapons and ammo types add some good variety. in the very early stages of the game it almost felt like a survival/horror game as i was constantly scrounging for ammo. however, by this point in the game (i'm in the garden area), im almost always up to full capacity on all things with the exception of certain ammo types like armor piercing rounds
i also find the vita chamber system to be possibly the most forgiving checkpoint system i can ever remember in a game tbh :lol... even on hard difficulty. could literally chip away at a big daddy's health with the wrench, die, respawn, repeat, over and over again if you want to kill one without using any ammo or health packs. would take quite a while, though
it also took me a while to realize that big daddies keep respawning and that you dont actually have to engage them :lol

finished the game. all things considered held up pretty well, and i imagine it would have been mind blowing if i played it around 2007-2008 around its release. same thought after having played shadow of the colossus.
i wonder if the later installments have better aim-down-sights features than this one.

It was amazing at launch, at least on 360. Easily the second most impressive game I had seen that gen at the time (Elder Scrolls Oblivion was #1). If you're going to continue the series right now I have to warn 2 feels very much like 1, especially in setting. Infinite is brightly colored and vibrant though and in combination with the skyhook, the game feels quite different from the first while still having plasmids and the weird hacking minigames. Not that 2 is a bad game, I find it hugely underrated.

nah, not going to jump straight into 2.
i like the idea of a linear FPS to break up the monotony between larger open world games. i also picked up The Stick of Truth for about $9 recently as another palate-cleanser.
from the more massive games/titles, i still have Dark Souls 2/3, Nioh, Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Skyrim, Metal Gear Solid V, Days Gone.

Stick of Truth is awesome, easily the funniest game I have ever played and the turn based combat is really good too. The combat is very similar to Super Mario RPG if you ever played that back on the SNES (another great RPG by the way). Though Persona 5 Royal is the gold standard for turn based RPGs on PS4.

Is Dishonored kind of a stealth game or what?
It’s both.
you can bulldoze your way through the game or you can go unnoticed and not kill one pixel.
The killing route makes the game more challenging but it’s not done in a punitive way. Each way has its own perks too.
the fun in this game comes in the way of it not getting in your way. It doesn’t dictate how you can approach a mission or how to eliminate (or not) your targets. You can kill them, set them up so the law can deal with them or let them go.
All of which have consequences later in the game.

as far as the story... its no Last of Us, God of War, Horizon... but its miles better than Dark Souls/Bloodborne (yes i know those games supposedly have fantastic lore if you read item descriptions. sekiro has some of that as well)
from what i've read a lot of players still play in full japanese and just use english subs for a more authentic experience. its not that dialogue heavy regardless.

Nah by full Japanese I meant playing with Japanese voices, Japanese subs, and Japanese UI. If the story isn't mind-blowing I'll just play it like that then and whatever I don't understand I guess I'll miss. My Japanese is only at a JLPT N4 level so I'll miss a lot. Probably need to be more like N3 level to not get lost a lot, though if it's really artsy (like Persona 5) it might be using a lot of N1 level grammar and vocabulary.
That's probably the only big thing I don't like about Playstation: that I can't play a game from one region in multiple languages. PC games you almost always can select language. I can usually play US region Switch games in full Japanese (eg voices + subs + ui) by setting the system language to Japanese. But on PS4 the only game I have played where you can have Japanese subs is NieR Automata.

English voice acting in Japanese games has come a long way since Shenmue. :lol
Can't think of any game I have played in years where I thought the English voice acting was bad. I was just wondering if it was like Nioh, which has great action but the stupidest story, one so bad I could give a shit if I was playing it in Russian or Cantonese or Vulgar Latin.

You sure you're not thinking of "yamero!!"? Yameru is a verb meaning to stop doing something, but "yamero" is a command that can be like "stop it" between friends and family but is more like "fucking stop this shit" in other contexts where it's extremely rude. You'll probably also hear "yamete" which is also the "stop" command, but it has kind of an implied "please". It's still pretty rude but not outwardly aggressive like "yamero" would be. The nicer way to say "please stop" would be "yamete kudasai" which you might also hear too. The "kudasai" is the explicit "please" there.

"Matte" is the command "wait", a little rude but with the implied please. "Mate" is a much ruder, aggressive command for "wait", with no implied please. Where you'll often hear matte is in "chotto matte" = wait a sec or "chotto matte kudasai" = wait a second please (with the explicit please).
A few other useful words:
ore: I (informal, masculine)
ware: I (formal, cringy anime-speak)

Shido's palace theme is life. The main theme is also great. This game has the chillest music in any video game I have ever played. And trust me, coming from a guy who thinks Shenmue's soundtrack is at the top.

What's your favorite soundtrack of the game?
Shido's palace theme is life. The main theme is also great. This game has the chillest music in any video game I have ever played. And trust me, coming from a guy who thinks Shenmue's soundtrack is at the top.
Come to think of it, they are very similar. They both make good use of jazzy vibey music.
I liked the theme from Futaba's palace, it's like you hear her scream from pain and then hear her sadness in the theme. Though I also really like the theme in Kamoshida's palace, and the final theme from Royal is amazing too right before the final bossfight. Best battle theme is Rivers in the Desert by far, though I still haven't done the third hidden bossfight in Royal and I wonder if that one might have a unique battle theme I haven't heard.

That does not seem very long.
Persona 5 is a much shorter and self contained game and that one only took me around 105 hours. Took me a month or so.

i just started. its going to take a while to adjust. the menu feels clunky to go through. i hate games with big crafting systems, too much shit to learn. and remembering the damn symbols of my magic abilities... the combat is pretty weak too imo. but the voice acting in this has been very good in the early going
