Still playing Persona 3 FES. I'm not getting God of War until either I finish GOW 2 & 3 or it goes on sale for $30. Whichever comes first is when I'll get God of War. There is no reason to buy games for $60 when you have a backlog tbh.

Might play my PS2 once I finish Persona 3 FES. My knock-off PS2 hard drive adapter is finally getting here from China on Monday or Tuesday. Supposedly the Chinese knockoff is better than the real thing since it supports SATA drives while the official Sony one is only for oldschool IDE drives.
Detroit is such a cool little game, imo.
Markus is boss. Connor is pretty much interchangable with him.
Kara in the other hand...my least favorite to play.

Did you play it as a pacifist? I am currently.
Kara doesn't have a lot to do when you're playing it as a caring mommy. Sometimes I just want to be an asshole but I'm planning on a second playthrough not giving a fuck. :lol

Jamestown is a decent classic top shooter but you're really doing yourself a deservice by not playing games in the Golden age of gaming.

Some rumors im hearing that a new bloodbrone is in the works..Would be crazy tbh. But At this point, id just wait for ps5. Sony should save a couple of known exlusives for the ps5.
I'm thinking Bloodborne, New God of War, maybe ratchet and a couple new ips. Will give them a killer headstart for a new console.

Everyone has their flavor.
For example, BB loves himself some Blooborne. For the life of me I just cant see the appeal of that game. Or Dark Souls for that matter.
I like following a cohesive story. Gameplay only just doesn't do it for me.

I dont know why Sony is pushing the PS5 idea so hard. I think 4 should be their last console. Just improve on it like they did with the Pro.
I'm done buying consoles. 4 will be my last regardless if they stop making games for it or not. I may switch to computer. Been looking at Steam for a long time now. This computer is already outdated and wouldn't support most PC games anyways.

Why would PS4 be their last console? You think they don't like their 30% cut of every game sale on their systems? How are they pushing PS5 so hard? They already said it's at least a couple of years away, which makes sense since the only way they're going to get a big generational jump while being able to sell their system for $400 or so is when the 7nm hits mass production.

Besides, you can just wait another three years or so after launch for another node shrink and a cheap PS5 Slim. Without PS1 + PS2 + PS3 BC the PS5 seems like it would be a waste to buy at launch anyways, especially considering how shit games usually are in the early years of a new console gen. Before their amazing 2017 the only good PS4 exclusives that weren't PS3 remasters were Bloodborne and Uncharted 4.

Yeah you're right about Sony not wanting to stop the cash cow that is the console business.
I just think the PS4 is a perfectly made machine that can be upgraded over time so another console is not necessarily needed other than to just put out another console for the sake of it.
I would probably consider a PS5 if they go back to how they made the user interface of teh PS3. The cross bar is a thing of beauty. The way you play media is also so good.
The PS4 is a mess in that department.

The PS4 is kind of a crap machine on a hardware level IMO. Sony got their asses handed to them last gen trying to go all out with forward looking hardware, so this gen they went with a crap mobile cpu that holds performance back enormously. Those garbage Jaguar cores are why PS4 Pro still mostly plays games at 30 fps despite having a gpu similar to PC gpus that can do 1080p 60 fps at high settings in the strong majority of modern games. The PS4 is honestly a piece of crap but they have so many talented studios making great exclusive games for it so the hardware sucking doesn't really matter.

No rush playing (single player) modern games. Too easy, even on hard. You always know you're going to beat them because you get unlimited continues at close check points. There's little to no game mechanics to learn. You basically "improve" as the character levels up, rather than improve through practice. What exclusives?
God of War? Have played all of them. Decent for what they are, but the series is basically Ninja Gaiden (modern version) and Godhand (or anything else from Clover) on very easy mode with quick time events.
Uncharted 4? Movie game.
Horizon Zero Dawn? Hey, another sandbox game!
Etc, etc, etc. I don't dislike these games, but as I said before, I play these games to veg out, basically.

Solution to XCOM2 difficulty
Turn off auto-save and save in the middle of battle when a turn goes well. Lead with your assault and rangers and buy spider suits for your sharpshooters. 2 specialists is a must: one medic/one offensive. I've never seen so many 79-85% chances fail even on VATS in Fallout. I'm guessing they nerf the percentages by 20 points - that's the only explanation for so many misses.

I think mid would be more into the Shin Megami Tensei series personally. The Persona games have more forgiving battle systems and much easier fights than mainline SMT, which are hardcore dungeon crawlers. Don't get me wrong, Persona 5 is my favorite turn based RPG since Fallout 2, but SMT IV for example is way more difficult and has much more interesting battles.

Yeah, I prefer turn based over action, as long as the majority of the hours are spent in battle rather than on grinding and fetching. Though I dislike unavoidable battles. Pain in the ass when you're trying to get to the next area to trigger a plot point and you keeping having to fight low level enemies you killed 7000 times already.

That was one of my biggest problems with P5, the fights were pretty vanilla for a turn based game. You just basically had to identify the enemy's weakness and spam it. And the boss fights were more of the same except they had a lot of health. Occasionally there would be different stages to a boss fight with different resistances but not a lot of strategy involved - especially once you gain the ability to swap party members out mid fight.
That and the fact that the game lasted something like 125 hours for me. That's just too fucking long, I start to lose interest after 80 hours or so. I had to take a break from video games after that one. :lol

It's only a matter of time before Gamestop closes their doors as games move more towards downloading and streaming rather than a physical disc. Plus, their entire business model revolves around lowballing people for their used games then reselling them for brand-new prices. The only reason to even walk in their door is because they keep older games in stock that other retailers no longer carry.

I don't understand the hate Gamestop gets for their trade in values. Usually if you want market value you gotta sell to someone who actually wants to play the game, not to a reseller. They usually offer more than smaller game shops or pawn shops in my experience. Plus they're a stupid company that sometimes makes colossal mistakes in their promotions. I have exploited their trade in system a couple of times into getting free store credit and they had one deal last year that was so stupid people were going into Walmart and buying $20 copies of games like Plants Vs Zombies 2, taking the shrink wrap off, and selling them used to Gamestop for $50 store credit. This was back when Switches were impossible to find other than super expensive Gamestop bundles and people on the PS4Deals reddit were using that deal to get Switch + Zelda + Pro Controller bundles for like $200 out of pocket.
If you want to hate on Gamestop, the super aggressive upselling they do is a much better reason. Eg when they try to sell you warranties on games or push their members cards on you. I'd personally hate to see them go under though, because they often have really good deals on new games.

I'm not really hating on them. Like I said, they're really the only place around that's guaranteed to have a good selection of old games. But I've had much better luck getting deals at the big box stores on newer games (especially around Christmas time). And If I'm going to pay full price, which is rare, I'd rather pay $60 than the insulting $57 for a used copy.
The warranty crap doesn't bother me, everybody does it. You can't buy a pack of gum at Best Buy without them trying to sell you an extended warranty on it.

Of the stores I buy from I'd say the amount of good deals from best to worst generally go
Gamestop = Newegg = Amazon > Best Buy = Target >> Walmart
I rarely pay more than $35 for new games.
I also find Gamestop to be much more aggressive than any other retailer pushing warranties and member cards. Best Buy was pretty bad ten years ago but now they seem to only push that shit if you buy hardware.

The axe combat makes it feel like its closer to a souls game tbh.
Most GOW fans says this game is harder.

I already explained it’s not about difficulty. I usually start games on hard because I always shoot for the platinum and that always shortens my playthroughs.
Now that I have the blades of chaos I am having a much easier time whereas with the axe It took me twice as long to get through a batch of enemies. I’m just not a fan of weapons that are bulky and hard to control.
God of War to me is a fast pace game and the axe in my opinion slows the game down.

Really? Good to know. I'm putting all my efforts into strenght and defense. When I can afford it I give the good old luck some love.
When I'm in fights I forget to use magic since there is so much going on and I often forget to press L1 and R1. I used to think Atreus was useless for most of my playthrought until I decided to max his arrows. Now he stuns enemies really quick.

I usually tried to wear armors that gave me high strength and runic. also a lot of the game is just about being patient imo. older GoW you could run around wrecking shit. This is more like souls or bloodborne where you may need to actually try to guard and dodge the enemies. rage kinda sucks in this game tbh only really helpful because it regens your health. but i would suggest armor that favors strength/runic along with cooldown so you can do your specials more often

Should have beat them before completing. Now you're overpowered against most of them.
The Queen Valkyrie is such a whore. I've spent basically the whole day trying to beat her and I can barely get to halfway on her health bar.

I played ten minutes of JC3 and got bored. Persona 5 has a good story, an epic art style, and one of the best soundtracks you'll ever find. The battles are way too easy though. If they put Shin Megami Tensei IV's battle system into Persona 5 it would be the greatest turn based RPG ever made. In SMT IV you absolutely cannot win battles just by leveling, even at lvl 99 you get completely fucked by any boss in the last third of the game if you don't use buffs and debuffs intelligently.

- Only 5 matches up in quality, but Suikoden 5 struggles with incredibly slow start and my goodness some of the most overpowered characters Ive ever played. Shit is way too easy sometimes. However storywise its closer to suikoden 2 in Quality.
- Suikoden 4 Sold the most in the franchise but it was also.the worst. I played it purely for the fact I wanted to learn more about suikoden. Understand in Suikoden the games are all tied in. Characters appearing in the same games younger or older so i played.
- 3 is great but the combat is honestly weird. Problem with 3 is they fired the creator of the whole series mid development and erased all his contributions in the game. Ala Kojima for MGS5...everyone who played the game feels like it was too short of a game. Lacked one chapter still undoubtly the best story JRPG in ps2 though.
Huge rumor that Konami deleted two chapters murayama the kojima of suikoden..created. he even subtley said yes in an intervew years ago that konami did delete a chapter

Component through the Wii. Looks amazing. As I said earlier in this thread, unless you have a pricey scaler like the Framemeister, LCD, OLEDS, etc render content at their non-native resolutions pretty terribly. This game runs only at 480i on this monitor, and if you told me it was "HD" (like 1600 x 1200 or something), I would believe you. CRTs simply make any resolution look great since they aren't fixed pixels. Also input lag to worry about when an LCD scales, but the Framemeister is supposed to eliminate it as much as possible. I wanted to see how PS2 looked on this monitor, but my Slim took a shit. Ideally, a CRT that can do 480p would the end game display for Cube, Xbox, and the PS2, since most of those games run at 480p. The only PVM that can do it is the 20l5, so be on the lookout. Never know. A VGA CRT monitor is also an option. Dreamcast looks stunning going into a CRT VGA monitor.
Downside to these displays obviously is fuckin' weight (as you said earlier). My friend bought a 25" PVM from the same guy. 120lbs :lol.

It's a 77000 model. Reading the instructions on how to install, looks like you need the PS2 to read 007 Agent Under Fire and a PS1 game to complete the process.

Yeah no reason not to just buy the Free McBoot card when you're using a Slim. With a fat PS2 it's easy to make a Free McBoot memory card if you have a hard drive adapter and a drive. Then you could just install Free HD Boot from PC to the hard drive and from that make a Free McBoot memory card on the PS2 (it's actually a lot faster booting from the memory card than from the hard drive).

I dont know why you insist on padding your stats. It means nothing if you beat this game or hard or easy or whatever. If a game doesn't require me to play on hard for an specific reason, I dont play that game on that difficulty.
What I've heard for the highest difficulty on God of War is that it gets in the way of enjoying the game as a whole. Why would anyone jump right into the hardest mode on any game just to quit rage 5 minutes later?

How many plats do you have? I'm a completionist, fool. :lmao
I just dont put too much stock on game difficulty. And yeah the Axe is slow and a boring weapon. But clearly it is the most powerful weapon of the two in the game.
And no, it's not common for people to play games on the hardest difficulty right out of the bat. First you familiarize yourself with any particular game and then you tackle the higher difficulty. :lol

Also got a beastly NEC CRT PC Monitor from him, max resolution 1920x1440 with a max v-refresh rate of 160hz. Smooth as butter for older 3D games (gonna use it for 1998-2005 era games).

It does that once every chapter I think, and the movies that play are based on the decisions you make in the game. Even though they have a couple of good actors in it (eg Daniels and Carcetti from The Wire) the video segments are pretty lousy.

Uncharted 4 is such an underrated game. As someone who played the entire mainline 1-4 series for the first time a couple of years ago over about a month I think 4 is far and away the best game and I still think it's the most graphically impressive game on the PS4 (though I have not played God of War yet). I think I'll wait until it's $10 on PSN before picking up Lost Legacy though.

Pics of my crap, as requested. 80% of the finds were thrift store, flea market, garage sale pulls. All about the thrill of the hunt, but the "pickings" have dried up immensely over the past decade, since there's people who basically live to do nothing but hit up Goodwills and monitor Craigslist like hawks. Also tough to get any sort of deal now since everyone and their mother prices by ebay Buy-It-Now.
Main area. The usual Gen 3, 4, and 5 systems along with a 3D0, Japanese Turbo Duo RX, and Atari XEGS. All systems that are RGB capable are hooked via scart through a component converter.

Saturn and PS1 collection (don't why the image rotated). Most of the Saturn games I bought new back in the day. Also bought Panzer Dragoon Saga new when it came out, but sold it off in like 2004 when it reached like 150.00. Little did I know.

Goodwill puts most of their gaming shit up on their auction site now, it's hard as fuck to find anything good in the stores. I feel lucky I found my PS2 there not too long ago. No way I wanted to buy something with those kind of failure rates online.

Yeah, and in addition to Goodwill thinking they're the new ebay, savvy employees will often poach any good shit, from videogames to stereos, etc. NES is stock. I use the top loader over the front loader since the top loader is less finicky. But one of these days, I'll get around to buying or modding myself an NES for RGB.
NiGHTS was probably my favorite game as a teenager. Bought it on launch day at Best Buy. Came in this long cardboard box (not the 3D pad version) with a bunch of goodies inside. For your toaster NES, Blinking Light Win bypasses the lockout chip that causes the blinking screen on an NES and replaces the cartridge connector and cartridge tray with one that doesn't require pushing it down, so you don't fuck your connector up.

Do you play them and drop them or do you play them, beat them fast and not do other shit with them? I'm OCD with gaming. I have to at least try to get 100% on most of what I play.
I usually spend 1-2 months with just one game. Depending on the games of course.

Finished up Viewtiful Joe 2. First time with the series. Deep combat system that allows for a shitload of creativity and one you can't button mash through, per the Clover/Platinum tradition. Fun scoring system, as well. Makes you want to replay the levels and improve. Only irritating parts of the game are the two boss rushes. Always have found boss rushes lazy filler.

I'm not anti-easy game nor a "hardcurrr gaymur" who always needs to get his brains beaten in, I just have issues when game journos fall over themselves taking about games like The Last of Us, Uncharted, and Bioshock: Infinite (you literally have an NPC throwing you health when you get low) as among the greatest games of all time when they barely qualify as games. :lol. I understand why modern games are designed the way they are. They have movie sized budgets so in order to profit, you need to appeal to the widest audience possible obviously. I think a happy hardcore/casual medium design is to have ranking systems after each set piece. A casual can mash through it without really engaging with the game mechanics, but suffer a low ranking, while a more devoted gamer can strive for a higher ranking playing the game "properly." Modern Splinter Cell (Conviction, Blacklist) comes to mind as an AAA franchise that does this (older Splinter Cells were less forgiving if you didn't play 100% stealth). You can play lazily and just Rambo your way through it or play correctly.

I still think the NES era difficulty was a byproduct of arcade games that were made to gobble up quarters. Those are the games devs knew how to make in the 80s. And Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us are incredible games man, you're tripping. :lol
Okami is a significantly easier game than Bioshock Infinite IMO. The art style is incredible though. Funny that it's thought much higher of in the US than Japan though, as the game is about Shinto mythology. I guess if there was a game in the US beating you over the head with complaints about how people don't believe in Jesus enough any more it would be seen as annoying here though.

A well designed arcade game should be able to be beaten on one credit (if you're willing to put in the practice, of course. I'm not a 1CCer, though. I usually impose a dollar limit on myself), meaning they're tough but fair. But it's true that some games of that era are hard more because of glitches, bad controls, and other nonsense than intelligent design.
I honestly don't get the deal with the Last of Us. I'm not being contrarian, either. Dumbed down stealth mechanics (compared to proper games in the stealth genre), not much enemy nor weapon variety, and by-the-book duck and shoot gameplay from set piece to set piece. Story was also pretty basic (I don't play games for the story really, so maybe that's why it left me cold. I will play games for the atmosphere, technology, art style and other aesthetic bric-a-brac, even if the gameplay isn't all that interesting [Crysis], and I don't see anything special from TLOU on that end. Maybe PS3 owners were floored by Naughty Dog's tech, but coming from PC, it wasn't particularly "mind blowing.").
I felt Bioshock Infinite was a downgrade for the series. Elizabeth throwing you health and a much more linear experience than the others. The setting also wasn't as compelling as Rapture. That said, it's a challenge to create a deep combat system in an FPS for the single player campaign. Usually an FPS's mechanics will shine (or fail) in multiplayer. One of the more interesting takes on single player FPS gameplay was Bulletstorm. Had kind of a Platinum Games philosophy toward its system, with the variety of ways you can string combos and points together.

I really enjoyed the story of The Last of Us and how Joel was so scared of losing his little girl again. Ellie's sense of humor cracked me up too, like when she was looking at the gay porno mags or named their horse Callus despite Joel's objections over how stupid a name it was. I loved the scene where she saw giraffes for the first time walking around Salt Lake City. It's one of the greatest stories I have ever seen in gaming. And while a PS3 game was never going to be any kind of trailblazer graphically, I loved the world they created where plants had taken over a lot of the cities again. It really made the world feel abandoned, I think they completely nailed the setting. If you played it like an Uncharted game you had the game on too easy a setting. It's much more fun playing it on a harder setting where bullets are hard to find and you have to do most of your work sneaking around, hitting enemies with bricks or bottles and then shiv to the neck, and so on.
You're really selling Bioshock Infinite short. For instance, I loved the skyhooks in the game. That was such a cool addition, I loved doing kills from the air with my hook/blade. When I go back and play the first two Bioshocks I really miss those. I always thought it was funny when Elizabeth would flip me a coin she found on the ground. I can't remember how often she would throw health packs, I remember it mostly being money. I liked the dystopian 1920s setting complete with religious fundamentalism and racial discrimination, and the game being based on the multiverse interpretation of quantum mechanics was fun. Especially since in that time period QM was the absolute cutting edge of scientific study.
Never heard of Bulletstorm. I'll have to check it out. Though I'm not a big fps fan. The kind of fps I like now that I'm older are story games like the Bioshock and Fallout series. I used to love the competitive shit like Quake and Unreal Tournament when I was young though.

I believed I played The Last of Us on hard.
Bulletstorm is criminally underrated. The gameplay is based around a "skill shot" mechanic and the more skill shots you link together, the higher the score, allowing for a variety of inventiveness in what you can do.

You already have an advantage with The Last of Us though. The game is meant to be played stealtily so that right there helps you manage with the difficulty.
I love those type of games. Game difficulty dont mean much when your main objective is to stay hidden in the first place.

It's a 77000 model. Reading the instructions on how to install, looks like you need the PS2 to read 007 Agent Under Fire and a PS1 game to complete the process.
Edit. N/M. Looks like you can buy the memory card straight away and don't need to do anything further. I thought maybe you had to buy it and then do the above. Cool.

Started shadow of war. Not a big fan of the setting and story but the controls are tight, gfx are good and I really like the nemesis system where orc captains have personalities, strengths and weaknesses and lives of their own so to speak. Makes for a lot of unexpected encounters, having fun with it
I have a cursory understanding of the Lord of the rings and it seems they've taken license with the story, can't say if for better or worse

It's basically more of the same from the first, not particularly special in that sense.
But if you liked hunting down specific orcs, planning around their strength and weaknesses, and getting attacked / ambushed unexpectedly, it's quite good. For all the orcs you kill they do a great job differentiating them and giving them personalities.

Speaking of Yakuza, I'm still playing Yakuza Kiwami. How was this a budget title? I bought it for $15 at Best Buy in January I think. The game is huge. Not as big as Yakuza 0, but nevertheless there is a lot of content in it.

Yes, it has a japanese audio as a second option. Old controls or new layout, etc.
I haven't played any of the Yakuza games but I have heard some people likening those games with one another.
The first game is slower than the second one where not only does the map get bigger but you can gamble and buy all sorts of shit. The game also has arcade games within the game too like Hang on, Space Harrier, Outrun, Darts and a ton others.

That's funny, Yakuza 0 has playable Space Harrier, Super Hang On, and Outrun arcade games, and then some Master System game called Fantasy Zone that is also playable. Some kind of shooter or something. You should check Yakuza 0 now that its MSRP has dropped to $20. Yakuza Kiwami has this ridiculous rock-paper-scissors wrestling game called Mesuking with slutty women dressed like bugs, it's pretty funny. I think Yakuza 6 has Virtua Fighter 2 as a playable arcade game.

shen mue was awesome, I bought an xbox just to play the 2nd part (played the 1st on a friends dreamcast). What I loved about it (aside from the massive scope) was that the combat was very similar to virtua fighter, it was very satisfying to pull off the advanced combos. Im surprised really that there arent more 3rd person adventure/open world games that effectively use that kind of arcade fighter control/combat scheme. Also looking forward to buying the 3rd part

Have you played any of the Yakuza games? Yakuza 0 and Kiwami have an RPG system for learning new attacks and combos, and 0 and Kiwami both have pretty cool stories. I have been really wanting to play Shenmue 1 & 2 for a while now but put them off to wait for the remaster. Yeah I played sleeping dogs, it was the right idea but something about the execution was off. Come to think of it, I can't remember now how the camera behaved in Shen mue, I think it went to a fixed kind of side angle for fighting, that probably was the main issue with sleeping dogs that having the camera behind the action isn't ideal for a fighting game.
Have also wanted to try out the Yakuza series, waiting for that PC release.

LOL in Yakuza Kiwami when you go to the porn DVD shop one of the movies you can ask for is Midnight Channel 4, which is hilarious since in Persona 4 you're supposed to tune into the Midnight Channel at midnight of a rainy night to see the next potential murder victim. Great game BTW, just finished that shit a little earlier.

No, I haven't gotten God of War since I doubt I'll play it before Black Friday, as next month I'll be playing Yakuza Kiwami 2 (definitely buying that shit on launch date) and November I'll be playing Red Dead Redemption 2 (that's an automatic launch date buy too). Might try to squeeze God of War II and III in between, as I really want to play those before playing the new one as they both look incredible and I loved the first God of War. Though I might play some of the PS3 Yakuza games I got too, or maybe some of the Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga series on my PS2. I'm really trying not to add anything to my backlog. It's so easy to buy games and then hard to actually play them. I'll be dead before I complete half of my PS3 backlog, but thankfully PS4 game prices are high enough it makes me think about actually spending the money. :lol

Have my buddy's Oculus Rift for a week. He bought it for his kid and they couldn't get it working so he left it here for me to test. Works fine. VR is definitely a YMMV experience, but I'm not really in "awe" of the tech on a fundamental level since "VR" has been around for a century and more (stereoscopic viewers). It simply divides an image into two separate ones, eliminating visual crosstalk, forcing your brain (the actual "technology" in this equation) to construct a 3D image. There's a beauty to its simplicity, really, but the concept has been around for centuries, so this isn't some 21st century tech magic (rant, I know. I have a pet peeve about techno-fetishism, "Omg, we're so advanced now!")
That said, it's a fun novelty, but the periscope effect is a problem for me. As 3 dimensional as everything is, the way the headset obscures your peripheral vision kills the illusion somewhat (screen door doesn't really annoy me, like others). It's like looking at everything through one of those coin operated periscopes you find in tourist locations. Other issues is that the headset squeezes my face and you will get hot. I was much more impressed with the tracking. Feels spot on with no lag. I wouldn't mind using the Rift touch controls to play an updated House of the Dead on a regular old flat screen. That said, I'm not a convert to VR. It's cool for those novelty 5-10 minute experiences, maybe a little virtual tourism, and of course I think this will beneficial in a training environment (I do think AR will succeed over VR for many training applications), but for me, I can't justify buying it for gaming, even sims. The periscope effect and discomfort just puts me off. But again, it's YMMV. End of the day, a really fun piece of tech, but the novelty wears off.
