wtf does this prove? Sony is essentially on pace to hit 90 to 100 million consoles sold. One of the best in history. xbox isnt doing that bad either. As nuch as people hate on xbox, it will still be very profitable by the end of its cycle.

Sony valued less than Nintentdo is more to do with their business outside ofthe console market. Outside of some very profitable CE products including the PS4, Sony is bleeding in all other avenues in their business.

Nintentdo is just killing them with a more cost effective business plan.

Extremely non relevant dumb article..btw.

Sony will basically never give up on Consoles. Playstation and Camera lenses is essntislly the only thing making them profitable.

Their mobile division is horrid. Music and Movie id costing them a lot of money, their other CE products although smaller in number now is killing them etc. Sony is bleeding everywhere except Playstation and camera lenses.

Nintendo is just a more concentrated company.

Sony needs to get rid of failing endevours...

Damn I have barely played my PC this year. I think the only games I have played on PC in 2017 are NieR Automata (it's way better than the PS4 version, though way buggier too) and Dark Souls 1. It has been such a down year for PC gaming other than NieR Automata, while Sony and Nintendo have been killing in 2017.

I don't think it's even close to NieR Automata for GOTY, at least based on the first few hours. I do think it's on about the same level as Horizon Zero Dawn though. BOTW and HZD are hands down the two best big open world games to come out since The Witcher 3 (NieR Automata has a pretty small open world and mixes in some other genres like bullet hell shooters and sidescrollers/platformers). It's probably not enough to make me buy a Switch but I still have pretty high hopes for Mario Odyssey.

Started playing 2k18, went straight to the classic teams (not all time). Kind of disappointed, for one the teams don't play the same style as their originals (05 Spurs would just chuck 3s for ex, nobody ever attacked the basket in half court offense) and for two they have generic player models (no hair for Manu :cry). I suppose the mechanics/gfx are a little tighter than last year but I had hoped for more. Come to think of it, of the 5-6 games I played it felt like every team just passed around the perimeter for long js/3s

I gotta say BOTW is getting boring as fuck. If this game doesn't pick up in the next couple of hours I'm going to move on to something better. The shrines are so barren compared to the epic dungeons I remember from earlier Zelda games. It's starting to feel like GTA IV which I slogged through and kept waiting for it to get good because of how much I loved the previous games and because of how hyped the game was from the reviews (eg, IGN gave it the first perfect 10 since Ocarina of Time I think).

I decided that I might as well finish FFXV since I put so much time into it. The game is fun, or, more specifically, the hunts are fun. The hunts are what made FFXII great to me, but that game had a story that the heroes are actually involved with. The creators of FFXV decided to make all the action happen away from the main characters, and sacrificed plot for open world gameplay. Can't there be a happy medium between the two?

At Square is constantly releasing content for the game. I just hope more party members are released, because this four character sausage fest is getting old.

The climbing and exploration is a lot of fun, but the combat is pretty boring. The game feels so minimalist, none of the epic scores like Zelda 1, A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time had. None of the great dungeons. The game feels really incomplete to me. The physics are really cool but BOTW feels like a scaffolding for what could have been a truly epic game.

They put another layer (VMProtect) on top of Denuvo. AC Origins is absolutely slamming cpus right now and it looks like it could be because of way too many VM calls. It's what happened with Rime when it first released. The legit version was a stuttering mess while the cracked one ran great.

Assassin's Creed Origins' second layer of anti-piracy protection activates every time you move

Update, November 1: Performance issues in Assassin's Creed Origins might be caused by two layers of anti-piracy protection, one of which is activated every time you move your character.

Ubisoft are using two forms of DRM software on Assassin’s Creed Origins. As well as Denuvo’s anti-tamper technology, Assassin’s Creed Origins is being protected by VMProtect, a second line of defense that seems to be causing significant performance issues.

Denuvo has been struggling to protect launch windows recently, as new strategies from groups of pirates have allowed them to circumvent the protection entirely, producing Denuvo-sanctioned keys to ‘trick’ the software into accepting counterfeit versions of the game. In order to help protect the game, it seems as though Ubisoft have added a second layer of protection - VMProtect was dropped by Denuvo earlier this year, but can be found in the Origins game files.

Anti-Tamper technology is unpopular as many users claim it slows down performance while offering minimal results in terms of protection. According to this Twitter thread and a couple of Reddit threads, however, the addition of a second form of protection is slowing the game down even further, causing significant performance issues on some machines. This is widely blamed on the fact that VMProtect is being called in every time the character moves, impacting performance every second.

Original story, October 30: Despite its use in a wide array of triple-A PC titles, the use of Denuvo Anti-Tamper software has remained a controversial topic. Initially far more effective than other forms of anti-piracy tech, it suffered from the start as various reports circulated regarding Denuvo’s effect on PC performance. Now similar reports suggest things have gotten especially bad with the latest Denuvo-protected game.

One crack group is suggesting that Assassin’s Creed Origins’ CPU usage has been increased by nearly 40%, as reported by DSOGaming. The group suggests that Ubisoft’s implementation of VMProtect over top of Denuvo is the reason for the abnormally high processor usage.

Our own performance report found Origins to be a very demanding game, but unfortunately it’s impossible to tell how much of that is due to the game itself and how much is due to its protection tech. Even cracked software continues to run Denuvo encryption in the background, making it impossible to tell how much performance issues are related to that software or to the game itself.

Take this report cautiously, particularly as it comes from a crack group, but even the suggestion of these issues is worrying. It’s become clear that Denuvo is no longer nearly so effective in combating piracy as it once was. Ubisoft’s past titles have typically included Denuvo even long after it had been initially cracked, so it’s unlikely to see a change in policy here.

Hey DJR210, don't forget to check Nioh in tonight's CODEX sale. Shit releases at 2AM I think and it's not supposed to have Denuvo. I don't think it's as good as Dark Souls or Dark Souls III, but it's still a pretty good third person action RPG. And since I could run it at 60 fps on a PS4 (though at a dynamic resolution between 720p and 1080p, but mostly at 720p) I'm sure you'll have no problems running it at least 60 fps on your system.

Meh Nioh.. Haven't even finished DS3 yet..

Forgot how good the Bloody Baron questline was tbh

Nioh isn't anywhere near as good as Dark Souls 3, but it's still a solid 8/10 IMO. Still, I bet your ass is playing Witcher 3 until E3 next year. :lol

Did you get the DLC too? If not, just fucking get it. It's amazing, even better than the Dying Light DLC (which is a must also). The Blood and Wine DLC both looks better than the base game and runs better too, and is easily a really strong 30-40 hours of content. Every bit as good as the base game. And then I think the Hearts of Stone DLC is even better, though it's about half the length and is on par with the base game graphically.

Yeah, I'll be playing Witcher 3 for a while.. I restarted the story this time actually paying attention to the who's who, the war, the different factions and their intentions, etc.. I've even resisted the urge to spam A at the notice board and I'm actually reading everything this time around. I had 40+ hours the first time, 27 this time..

I'm barely at the end of the Bloody Baron questline, just headed to Skellige. I'm gonna try and complete as close to 100% as I can, this game is really one of best ever.

I don't think I did use a Wiki, I just played every single NPC in the game. I don't want to give too much a spoiler especially since you're very early in the game, but no matter how badass you make your decks you'll have a challenge later on in Gwent.

Does it compare well to the Ezio Trilogy? I loved those games. This is the first AC in years that I'm interested in. I have heard it compared to Horizon Zero Dawn a lot. Do you think it's worthy of being put in the same class as such an epic game like Horizon?

Since you're a big fan of the franchise, how do you feel AC Origins compares to the rest of the series? I hated the first Assassins Creed (it was so repetitive) but AC 2 was spectacular. Then AC Brotherhood felt like it improved on AC 2. AC Revelations was good but a bit of a step down from AC 2 and AC Brotherhood. On AC 3 I got bored an hour or two in and never went back, and I haven't played any of Black Flag, Rogue, Unity, or Syndicate. Do you think it's as good as AC 2 or AC Brotherhood? Because that would make it a must buy the first time I see it for say $30.

Definitely up there, IMO... it's not the best in the series, because you know the mechanics and what not, but they borrowed little things reminiscent from RDR, Far Cry, etc that kinda removes a bit the re-hash sensation from the last few games. Yes, there's still the synchronization and stuff, but at least the bits that feel like a re-hash like the naval battles and going back to the 'present' are kept to a minimum. Egypt mixes well with the game too, IMO.

I'm basically done with it, it's the only AC recently where I tried to do all the side quests and complete more of the game.

Damn Persona 5 is great. I can see why it's getting a lot of hype as the greatest turn based RPG ever made. I'm still too early in it to really say if it's better than Fallout 2, Chrono Trigger, or Final Fantasy VI but I could very well see it being the best of the four based on the strength of the first 15 hours of the game. Man I used to scoff Playstation and their catalog was mostly shit from 2013-16 aside from Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, and a bunch of PS3 remasters, but Sony's lineup of 2017 exclusives has been nothing short of epic and the 2018 lineup looks strong too, though no way I could see it matching this year's releases.

Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice is supposed to be amazing. It looks incredible from the reviews I have seen of it, but my PS4 backlog is pretty long right now and I haven't gotten to it yet.

What Remains of Edith Finch has some great storytelling, but it's very short. E.g. something you'd play over a night or two. It's a casual game though.

Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn are both pretty great stories if you go that route, and if you like Souls games Bloodborne is probably the best one. If you didn't like Rise of the Tomb Raider I can't imagine you'd like any of the Uncharted games though, they're extremely similar to the modern Tomb Raider games. If you do buy a PS4 wait a week or two, because Sony often does big console sales around Christmas. I got mine for $220 last year around December 12th or so when Sony did an official price cut to Black Friday prices (which was $250 last year).

Switch has some badass games in the pipeline. Shit like Shin Megami Tensei V, Bayonetta 1 & 2, Bayonetta 3, Project Octopath Traveler, and Metroid Prime 4. All but Bayonetta 1 & 2 are likely a year away at least, but they should be amazing. Bayonetta 1 & 2 launches on February 16th and are both killer games. Hopefully it sells well on Switch. Since no one bought the Wii-U no one played Bayonetta 2, but it's an amazing game.

I didn't think Breath of the Wild was as good as the hype, but I'm in a pretty small minority there. Most people who have played it seem to absolutely love it.

The Switch catalog is going to be a little barren for 2018 since all you really have right now is Odyssey, BOTW, Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart 8 and Bayonetta 2 is their only big confirmed 2018 release. But their catalog going forward looks pretty strong with Shin Megami Tensei V, a new Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime 4, and Bayonetta 3. It's looking like Nintendo could have an epic 2019. They just gotta have Zelda and Mario keep the system selling next year.

Maybe I'll play the Wii one on Dolphin to see how I like the series once I'm done with Persona 5. Or the Wii U one on CEMU.

It's a good game and I enjoy it, I would say unless you really like JRPG games though it may not be worth getting a switch now. The battle system is kinda odd and some of the mechanics of the game are confusing. But the game itself has been pretty good thus far. I never played the first one either and i don't think it's necessary to play to play this game. I'm still only like 9 hours in.

I've actually been playing battlefront since it was on sale on PSN. Actually pretty fun thus far. Space battles are highly entertaining

I am waiting for boxing week to get the S8 for free and a 200 store credit. Will be using it to buy the switch for 200CAD...You should do the same

Nah I'm not looking for a phone and there is no boxing week in the US. I'll probably grab a Switch next month after Nintendo Direct unless their 2018 lineup just looks like complete shit. They're supposedly going to show gameplay from Metroid Prime 4 and I imagine they'll have a lot on the upcoming Fire Emblem game since that's supposed to release in 2018.

Santa brought a PS4 and a few games this year. Madden 18, pants vs zombies 1, Rayman legends, uncharted thief's end, watchdogs 2. Surprised at how much more I enjoy Madden after I changed the defensive view. Rayman is perfect for kids, better than a Mario game for beginners. Surprised at the lack of a play now for Madden. I really need to have a psn subscription to be able to play live events?

Is a psn a must have for the games I currently have plus a few? Madden isn't able to play online against x box, correct? I figured that watchdogs 2 was adult orientated but man do they swear in there.

You need Playstation Plus to play multiplayer in all but a handful of games. The only PS4 game I have that has free MP is Journey.

Since you got a PS4, I have to recommend the best game on the system that's on sale for $17.49 right now for the base game plus DLC:

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP9000-CUSA00900_00-BLOODBORNECOMPLE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1iKYjVFigM

It's the best game I have played in 25 years, and the long load times the review complains about have long since been fixed.

Right now lots of the top PS4 games are on sale for great prices if you have a few bucks left after the holidays. Here are a few I'd recommend checking the reviews on to see if they interest you:

Dying Light The Following: Enhanced Edition - $20 at Gamestop
Horizon Zero Dawn - This one is $40 everywhere, $50 for the complete edition, so no big sales on it
Persona 5 - $30 at Gamestop
Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection - $10 on the Playstation Store (it's remasters of Uncharted 1-3)
Yakuza 0 - $36 on the Playstation Store
The Last of Us Remastered - $20 everywhere (normal price now)
The Witcher 3 Complete Edition - $25 at Gamestop

I need to be selective in my games. I will only play sparingly, the rest would be for kids. After installing the hour long update I realized pants vs zombies is online only. That's frustrating. Especially considering that the kids would get smoked in online play

My six year old is surprisingly good at Rayman, considering he's only played iPad games and retro games before. He's got this down much better than super Mario world

Naa it's mainly those games as well as a few others. You just have to know that going in. If that bothers you, then those games obviously aren't for you.

I personally find the combat in Uncharted 4 fun as hell though. The addition of the grappling hook and opening up some of the combat areas (in comparison to its predecessors) really added a lot.

I would go take Ninja Turtles back, that game is complete dogshit. It looks amazing on the surface but it's a really lousy game. If you want an awesome kids game look at Ratchet & Clank. It's a 3D platformer with Pixar like graphics. Plus you'll get a few bucks back on the exchange.

Ninja Turtles was one of the games that almost killed Platinum Studios. It was such a hyped game that turned into such a crushing disappointment. The only thing that saved them was the surprise success of NieR Automata, though that's not really a game appropriate for younger kids.

It plays like a horror novel but borrows some storyline elements from the F.E.A.R and Dead Space series. BSAA makes an appearance which ties everything together. This is not the kind of game you want to rush through. They went back to the original concept of creepy big house with danger around every corner with puzzles and it works great. A far cry from RE:6 which was torturous to play. There is downloadable content (micropurchases :td), but they offer the Chris Redfield campaign for free. If you play this game with headphones, you will get scared :lol

It's not too good IMO. The selection of officially compatible Vita games is pretty small, and lots of them are games like Dragon's Crown or Daganronpa that you could already buy on PS3 or PS4. I bought it strictly for Persona 4 Golden since it supposed to be an enormous upgrade over Persona 4 on PS2, and then Muramasa Rebirth was another game I was really interested in since I love side scrolling beat 'em ups with killer art like that, eg, games like Dragon's Crown or Odin Sphere Leifthrasir. It does have a pretty good selection of compatible PS1 games though, but you'd be better off building a Raspberry Pi and pirating PSP repacks of PS1 games. Especially since you can use a microSD card on a Pi while on a non-modded PS TV you're stuck with expensive PS Vita memory cards.

Both P4G and Muramasa Rebirth play really nicely on the PS TV though.

Vita is such a disappointing system, just like PSP was. Sony's home consoles are amazing but for portables everything other than Nintendo has been crap. Game Gear, Lynx, Nomad, PSP, Vita have all been lousy. I gotta say the 3DS is the shit though. Nintendo really knows how to make games tailored to quick handheld play sessions.

Though I could see PS1 games being cool on the go I guess. Too bad the memory cards are so ridiculous. I paid $22 for a refurbished 8GB PSVita memory card for my PS TV while my 64 GB microSD card I put in my 3DS only cost $1 more.

This hardware bug might end up killing VMProtect because there is no way AC Origins could take another 30% hit to cpu performance considering how ridiculously cpu bound it already is before this security patch comes out. Ubisoft is going to have to dump VMProtect or it will get some unbelievably bad press and every game they release here on out will get murdered in the Steam reviews. My friend who is a network admin said this will really fuck cloud service providers in addition to people running VMs.

On the plus side, this bug leemajors posted about will really kill performance for virtual machines. Which means the VMProtect DRM is about to make AC Origins run slow as fuck. This hardware bug might end up killing VMProtect because there is no way AC Origins could take another 30% hit to cpu performance considering how ridiculously cpu bound it already is before this security patch comes out. I don't think VM Protect will have an issue with this, and potentially Microsoft can have an isolated game mode just for this (with specially signed executables).

We'll see where this goes, tbh... the bug seems to be a privilege escalation bug with the branch predictor, which is one of the strongest advantages Intel has over AMD..

RE7 has high replay value. Only complaint is the load time from start screen to the game. Madhouse difficulty is really tough.

Nah, it affects everything, but the exploit explicitly seems to allow reads from protected memory areas (a twist on rowhammer, defeating KASLR). At least that's what you can gather from what's been published.

With that in mind, the slowdown comes from context switching. Anything with a hypervisor will get hit the hardest (thus cloud computing being an issue, plus in that arena, you MUST guarantee data isolation).

VMProtect does not run on a hypervisor, it's more of a JIT/Interpreter hybrid used to obfuscate. Microsoft can simply allow to run certain processes with the 'bug' (but at full speed) if their code signature allows the feature.

The odds of a game publisher trying to exploit the bug is probably pretty low on a desktop computer, and even if they try, Microsoft can revoke the signature.

Missed the for loop thing... basically, any branch. What Intel does (and AMD does not and suffers for it) is that it has a multi-level branch predictor. When it's not sure or hasn't built enough history of a branch, it can actually execute both sides of the branch (taken/not taken). Then once the branch is resolved, it selects the taken route and nukes the not taken route. This is a very simplistic explanation, but at a high level, it's more of less like that. The thing with this design is that if one of the sides of the branch returns to user mode but not the other side, the actual switch to user mode can't happen until the branch is resolved. And apparently that's part of the bug/issue. The other part is that processes (used to) share the kernel segment TLBs with user processes, which could hint the userland code on kernel locations/memory areas. A combo of the two could defeat KASLR every time.

The fix itself involves flushing and replacing the TLBs such that user processes never see kernel segment entries. The cost of that is pretty high on context switches.

It's hard to know until we know more about how Microsoft patches the issue. I doubt they just want to drop a 30% in performance across the board. Linux doesn't really have a choice, but Microsoft might, at least until new hardware with the issue fixed on the silicon becomes more widespread.

I just started Persona 4 Golden. I know this is supposed to be an amazing game, but it's going to be hard for it to get out from under Persona 5's huge shadow for me I think. Though I suppose I'm glad I played 5 first since there is a huge spoiler in the plot of Persona 5 you'd already know if you played Persona 4 first.

Sleeping Dogs on the One. Downloaded it when it was free on Gold last summer and just got around to playing it. Fun game and a great beat 'em up throwback like The Warriors on PS2 was a decade or so ago.

Just finished Lost Legacy. Decent game, but doesn't do anything new if you've already played the Uncharted series. Basically a cut and paste of Uncharted 4 as far as gameplay is concerned.

Going to start Persona 5 next. I was hesitant to get this game since I've never played the series before, and honesty know nothing about it. I love old school turn based RPGs though, so I couldn't resist.

The second I saw this intro screen I knew Persona 5 was going to be amazing:

And it is. Make sure to read the tutorials that pop up or you'll be completely lost on how to do demon negotiations to get new personas. Best turn based RPG since Fallout 2 IMO. The combat and dungeon crawling is very old school and the social sim aspect is surprisingly good too. The soundtrack is killer.

Also, if you want to go with the canon name of the main character, it's Ren Amamiya. In the manga the main character's name is Akira Kurusu (it's the same guy), but in the upcoming anime and Persona 5 Dancing Star Night it's Ren Amamiya. Or you could just name him whatever in the hell you want.

I thought about getting Uncharted Lost Legacy when it was $20 but passed since I can't imagine when I'd play it given how many PS4, PC, PS3, and PS TV games I have in my backlog. Without Nate I'm going to pass until maybe I see it for $5 used from Redbox or something.

I honestly didn't miss Nate all that much. Chloe was a strong enough character to carry the game. But like I said, the gameplay was identical. I didn't expect them to reinvent the entire game for what was essentially (a fairly long) expansion. But I thought they'd at least maybe change some of the hand to hand mechanics or something considering you're playing as a woman.

How much more of a price drop are you expecting? These games have already been $30 each consistently the last two months in the US. I liked NieR Automata better but they're both must plays.

To give you an idea how much I liked Persona 5, I bought a New 3DS XL and a Playstation TV in the last couple of weeks to play the rest of the Shin Megami Tensei / Persona series. Playstation TV has the best version of Persona 4, 3DS has a bunch of Shin Megami Tensei games plus Persona Q and the upcoming Persona Q2, and I already have a PS3 for Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne and Persona 3 FES. So I thought Persona 5 was so good I as I was finishing the game I went out and bought the hardware and the games to play most of the rest of the series. And with all that said, I thought NieR Automata was better. But those two are far and away my top 2 GOTY for a stacked 2017.

It's a better improved game graphically than Human Revolution but as far as gameplay wise is almost a carbon copy with a worse story.

Human Revolution was one of the games on the year back in 2011(?). Loved it, and would suggest playing it first if you haven't.

No room to add anything else to the backlog. My dumb ass bought a PS TV and a 3DS to play the Shin Megami Tensei series and other Persona games after how much I loved Persona 5 to add to my huge backlog of PC, PS4, PS3, and Wii U games (god bless CEMU). At least there is nothing coming out I want until the end of March. Side note: Zelda A Link Between Worlds is the shit on New 3DS XL. The game looks great with the 3D and is an awesome sequel to A Link to the Past (which is the GOAT Zelda game by far).

Agreed. Mankind Divided was a completely forgettable game. It also sucks that 90% of the game takes place on the same map, instead of globetrotting like you do in all the previous Deus Ex games.

Kind of both but actually good.

They kept what made the original game great and added more. The game is bigger and on a different location which makes it fresh while keeping the core gameplay familiar to gamers who played the first.

The one about killing the Outsider is totally skippable though.

I count 7 deaths but realisticly i probably died 10-13 times before reaching the bunker.

What a frustrating start to the game. Half of those deaths were against the boss bsfore the bunker too so i have to restart and restar all over again.

Edit: damn hard mode is impossible. First mission after finally reaching bunker and i am still dying so often. Its frustrating. I dont mind the difficulty if tgere was more save points

Games on harder difficulties are usually broken and unbalanced. They basically just turn the enemies into damage sponges. I love challenging games, but there's a "fair" way to do it. One way to gauge a "fair but hard" difficulty is if mastering some in-game mechanic/pattern makes a section/level/boss exponentially easier, you have a balanced difficulty. Think Godhand's or Ninja Gaiden (Xbox version) combat systems, if you ever played those. Patterns in shumps. Or learning manual shifting and the tracks in a racing game. The difficulty comes from mastering those mechanics and learning those patterns, not from patiently putting up with whatever shitty design choice the devs threw in to make the game "harder."

Xevious
01-09-2018, 04:10 AM
Yeah, most games were designed to play on normal. Switching it to hard usually only increases the enemy damage resistance and decreases yours.
