i played it for about half an hour and yeah, it's definitely not a great port :lol the cut scenes are definitely where i see the poorest performance. frequent stuttering and frame drops. gonna have to wait for some updates

Man you should refund that shit and then pirate it if there are any patches to fix it. No reason to pay $50 for a broken piece of shit.

It's really hard at first when you can't understand anything interesting, but the more you know the easier it is to learn more and the easier it is to immerse in manga, games, anime, etc. It's funny she brings up hashi for both chopsticks and bridge, which isn't typically that hard to tell apart honestly... In speech you can tell them apart in speech because haSHI is bridge, while HAshi is chopsticks, where the CAPS indicate speaking at a higher pitch than you do the lowercase. And in writing they're easy to tell apart since 橋=bridge and 箸=chopsticks. For sake = salmon vs sake = alcohol/sake, people will often say shake when they mean salmon and then throw a polite o on front and say osake when they mean sake. In writing sake = 酒 for alcohol/sake is easy to see while the fish will usually be written 鮭 or サケ.

The guy who talks about the falling and rising of intonation is right though. The pitch accent (eg haSHI vs HAshi) is an enormous pain in the ass, and most people learning JP as a second language don't bother with it. Plus pitch accent is completely different in Kansai (eg Kyoto, Osaka, Nara) vs Kanto (eg Tokyo, Yokohama, Chiba). I do study Kantou pitch accent only because it makes things easier to say when you try to follow one pitch accent for everything.

To me the grammar is the hardest part of it. For example, the words "you" (like[ness]) and "naru" (to become) combine in confusing ways, where "you" is pronounced like "Yo my nigga". The grammar can be really hard to process in real time, at least for someone like me that has only had maybe ~1000 hours listening to the language.

Thankfully the sounds in Japanese are no problem for native English speakers to hear and process, unlike say Mandarin where every syllable can have five different variations thanks to the five tones in Mandarin (even worse in Cantonese where there are 7 or 8 tones). There is only one sound in Japanese I have a hard time making, and that's the "broadcaster's accent g", which will make the "ga" sound some weird weighted average of how we'd say ga, na, and nga. Here is what I mean: check the pronunciation of 映画 = eiga, which means movie, at this link below:

https://forvo.com/word/%E6%98%A0%E7%94%BB/#ja

Strawberrybrown has that Tokyo broadcaster's accent where it sounds kind of like a cross between einga, eiga, and eina.

While jphonetics has a more standard accent where it sounds like straight eiga.

That nga sound is more pronounced with broadcasters and old people, while the ga sound is more universal with younger people and people outside the Tokyo area.

finished witcher 3 campaign (still have both DLC's to play through)

i didnt quite hit every single little question mark location, though i did my fair share of exploring. otherwise completed all side quests i came across

it was really good but i dont think its a 10/10 game. the combat was too stale. i was playing hard difficulty and it just got too robotic and predictable. i think AC Odyssey actually had better combat. what it did do really well has actually write a very good narrative, and most side quests were pretty interesting. i did get fatigued by too many story elements (i stopped trying to follow the Novigrad plot when looking for Dandelion... too many names to keep track of... whoreson, djikstra, dudu, zoltan, priscilla, king of beggars. i started just skipping all the dialogue because it was too much. and toward the end of the game i found myself doing the same.

like a lot of these massive games, i dont think i could envision myself playing it a second time. but the writing in the game was a-tier (not S tier plot like RDR2). a lot of effort into every little side quest. the monster variety was good enough to keep the game somewhat interesting, but eventually even with the writing, all the quest mechanics started feeling re-done (walk around with witcher senses), and the combat wasnt quite fun enough to keep it fresh. combat in games like bloodborne, sekiro, god of war were so addicting that i didnt care if anything felt redone.

i think its an 8 or 8.5 game to me

will see about DLC

Don't you only have one or two readings for every hanzi character though? I envy Chinese for how much more elegant their writing system is. Isn't most hanzi given by a radical the gives a vague meaning and then a component for pronunciation? At least that's how on-yomi usually work in Japanese (by on-yomi I mean the Chinese derived reading). For instance, in Japanese when you see 同 as part of a kanji symbol it always has on-yomi "dou". So like 銅 = copper has the radical for metal on the left giving that vague meaning and then the component 同 indicating 銅 is pronounced "dou."

But Japan just fucking stapled hanzi right onto their spoken language so you have this mess of readings. Like 同じ for same is pronounced "onaji", using the kun-yomi (Japanese derived reading) "ona". But unlike the Chinese on readings there is no rhyme or reason to the Japanese kun readings. Some kanji just have a ridiculous number of kun readings, such as 生 which can have:

* kun-reading 'i' in 生きる = ikiru = to live
* kun-reading 'nama' in 生 = nama = raw
* kun-reading 'u' in 生まれる = umareru = to be born
* kun-read 'ha' in 生える = haeru = to grow

and many others. Though Japanese is so much easier to listen to. The grammar is a bastard and so is the speed, but man I can't imagine training my ear to hear tones on every single syllable spoken in real-time.

But for the written language, Japanese is a lot like English where you really have no idea how a word is pronounced until you hear someone say it, because you don't know if you're using a kun reading or an on reading for each kanji or which kun reading or which on reading. And Japanese still gets multiple on readings for a lot of kanji owing to the different Chinese dialects.

BTW, you ever watch this youtuber named Xioama? Fucking kills me when he goes to Chinese restaurants and stores and talks to people there in English and then busts right into Mandarin, and sometimes Cantonese and Fuzhounese too.

Ugh speaking of Japanese having fucked up readings of kanji, 大人 is a bastard.

Usually you'd read 大人= otona = adult (eg, large + person), though it can also be read dainin or daijin (also adult)

Now 人気 = ninki = popular (eg, person + feeling/spirit)

大 usually has reading dai or tai when it modifies another word as a prefix, so 大人気 = daininki = very popular (eg, large + popular).

But going back to 大人 = otona = adult, if instead you modify adult with 気 = feeling / spirit, you get

大人気 = otonage = mature (eg adult + feeling / spirit)

So fuck, 大人気 = daininki and 大人気 = otonage are two completely different words written exactly the same. :lol

yeah the writing uses radicals, its a little daunting coming from letters but once you get a hang of the radicals you can figure stuff out and it makes sense, just a matter of memory. i remember grammar being fairly easy too. but getting the pronunciation right and recognizing it in other speakers is hard AF, since leaving beijing i just lose more and more, but still fairly comfortable writing.

asians in general are so surprised to hear foreigners attempt their language they usually are easily impressed and encouraging (unlike those french bastards :lol). i also ha(d) a thick beijing accent and most people got a kick out of that

sounds like japanese is the other way around, easier to speak /understand but harder to read and write. i also found it very amusing, that in china (at least in the mid90s) most people had terrible english but were still curious and brash enough to throw one or two words at you and try and figure out where you were from... japanese people, i always got the sensation they studied english since childhood, but were too afraid to make a mistake and would default to "sorry no english" for fear of embarassment

Japanese kids and high schoolers all take English classes, but they don't learn shit. Same way Americans take Spanish or French classes and don't learn shit either. It's funny you bring up Asian countries going nuts fawning over people who make an attempt to speak their language. In Japan supposedly the best way to tell if your Japanese is good is that people stop telling you your Japanese is good (eg 日本語上手 = nihongo jouzu = you're skilled at Japanese).

The readings are bastards in Japanese. So often I'll know what a word means from the kanji but not how to pronounce it. I was playing Persona 4 Golden and looked inside a store and read the word 店番 for tending to a store in the textbox. Usually 店 (=store) is pronounced with the Chinese derived reading "ten" like it 喫茶店 = kissaten = coffee shop or 店長 = tenchou = store manager when combined with other kanji into a word, and 店 = mise = store when by itself. And 番 almost always has its on-reading "ban" used (eg like 一番 = ichiban = first / best / Number one) so since 店番 was a compound kanji word using a kanji 番 that almost always is pronounced with the Chinese derived reading "ban", surely 店番 is a Chinese loanword and pronounced tenban. Nope, looked the word up and it's fucking miseban.

Speaking of English in Japan, another hilarious thing about Japanese is 和製英語 = waseiego, which are psuedo-English words invented in Japan. There is so much Engrish in Japanese now they make up words that sound English but aren't. Like ぺーパードライバ = peppaadoraiba = paper driver, which is a person who has a drivers license but can't drive worth a shit because they never do it.

Nvidia is teasing something on the the 31st of this month. GamersNexus is reporting September 9th for shit to be released I think, but no word on which cards they will be. Since Nvidia doesn't have a lot of manufacturing capacity at 7nm I think these are supposed to be some very hot running 10nm or even 12nm cards. I read 3080 Ti is supposed to be a 325W card. So hopefully the reference cooler is decent if you're not waiting for aftermarket cards.

Yeah got it from the CODEX Store, though it's got an annoying bug forcing you to set your system clock back to 2019 to play. No Fitgirl Store for spurraider21 on PS4 though.

Oh yeah... It was actually on sale for $30 not long ago, that's when I grabbed it.

This might really be a gen to go AMD on 7nm if they're able to cram RTX 2080 performance onto a die smaller than what was in the XBox One X while Nvidia is having to blow up their power budget to counter (and the Navi 2 gpu in the Series X is something like 45% of the XBox Series X die).

The look and the feel of it is totally Dark Souls 1 (methodical too) but instead of a shield you have an outer shell that you can harden when you need protection... but needs to be recharged after you use it.

I just got fucking destroyed by what seems like my first boss encounter. I must have missed something that's the equivalent of a bonfire because the run back is going to be annoying.

Why? Don't you already have like a 2070 Super? Oh well, I'm not so disappointed I jumped on a 1660 Super a few months ago now after the next gen Nvidia looks like a turd. If the Titan equivalent is a 450W card you can bet the upper midrange will probably be like 300W cards. If I wanted one of those I would have bought a fucking R9 290x instead of a GTX 970. Then again maybe Navi 2 is good after Navi 1 was pretty disappointing.

It would be the only card left to jump to if the 2070 Super doesn't cut it a couple of years down the road whether I like it or not if this is what Nvidia is putting out. Honestly though, it likely won't even be the case anyway since I now have like 70 games on backlog thanks to the last Steam sale. :lol

I know what you mean. I enjoyed the fuck out of it, because i enjoy stealth killing enemy camps in any game (AC, Far Cry, Shadow of War, days gone, etc) but after a certain point the game becomes a chore to complete. the story was meh, the dynamic between Jin and his uncle was ok but they didn't execute it well enough imho. and the end choice is dumb and has no effect on anything other than an armor dye and your starting home. it was a 7.5 or 8/10 for me, nowhere close to being as good as LoU2, imho. thats why i think its funny that so many anti LoU edgelords act like GoT is some kind of masterpiece of story telling and its not, it's a pretty generic open world action RPG hack and slash with tons of copied elements from the games that i mentioned earlier. still, it was fun for awhile

they also fucked up on the weapon upgrades. its neat that you can get various armor sets and level them up but being stuck with one katana the entire game was lame, wish they had let me choose other swords or handheld weapons like axes, pikes, etc

Yeah he literally does nothing but play TLOU part 1 and 2 on Twitch/Youtube. He has the world record on the first game, having beat it glitchless on grounded mode in 2 hours 49 minutes. But essentially that's skipping all cutscenes, sprinting through every location that will let you, and memorizing all enemy spawns/patterns. People do that shit on a bunch of other games also. I'm not quite sure what the appeal is tbh.

I wouldn’t go as far back as ps2 ratchet and clank, it would feel very outdated comapred to ps4 ratchet. Crack in time and tools pf destruction are must plays though. Both are easily 8-9/10 even by ps4 standards. I was annoyed by some level design in crack in time but it’s my favourite R&C game because it’s better than all R&C imo in most aspects. Just shorter.

Fans says tools of destruction is better and maybe that’s the case. I lpved them both. Defninitly confident with recommending both.

Ignore ps2 version. You already played the ps4 version which was basically the remake of the ps2 versions

Maybe if you're playing at 1080p without a ton of RT effects, especially since games like Battlefield love core and thread count. Though I just looked up 720p benchmarks for BFV and saw the difference between i5-9600k and i9-9900k wasn't a whole lot.

Damn turns out the RTX 3070 has more CUDA cores than leaks from a couple of days ago said the the RTX 3090 would have. So it looks like the huge increase in performance isn't just in raytracing, but in standard rasterization too. Feels bad having bought a Turing gpu this year :lol. Nah RT is likely to be pretty significant this gen since it's in the PS5 and Series X. Especially since it's in the new Unreal engine so anyone using Unreal can just turn if on and off easily. 4A Games who does the Metro series already said they're developing everything with RT from now on. I know you scoff Ratchet & Clank, but it has some pretty cool raytracing in the trailer Sony released the other day. And especially in shooters like BF and COD that have used RT since the beginning.

Reminds me of Crash Bandicoot. I played (and beat) most of those games way back then with relative ease but with the remastered versions I am failing so hard I had to quit. :lmao

https://www.engadget.com/xbox-series-x-price-release-043407176.html

Xbox Series X will reportedly cost $499 and arrive November 10th

Microsoft revealed (https://www.engadget.com/xbox-series-x-launch-november-191726809.html) last month that the Xbox Series X will arrive in November, just in time for this year’s holiday shopping season. Now, Windows Central (https://www.windowscentral.com/xbox-series-x-and-xbox-series-s-release-date-and-price-finally-revealed)reports a more specific release date and even a price point for the tech giant’s next-gen console: the Series X will apparently set you back $499 and will be available on November 10th. The publication’s report comes hot on the heels of a leak (https://www.engadget.com/xbox-series-s-leak-030105276.html) that shows what the Xbox Series S, which is expected to be Microsoft’s cheaper disc-less console, could look like.

According to Windows Central, Microsoft will offer a $35-per-month Xbox All Access financing option for the Series X. The publication also confirms that the Series S will cost $299. Microsoft will reportedly offer a $25-per-month Xbox All Access financing option for it and will be trying to capture as many markets as possible by having a large global rollout for the cheaper console. The Series S will be available on November 10th as well, the publication says.

The Xbox Series X has backwards compatibility and will be capable of 4K gaming. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series S, as its pricing indicates, will most likely be the less powerful of the two. Previous reports say (https://www.engadget.com/2019-12-04-microsoft-disc-less-xbox-lockhart-report.html) it’s capable of 1080p and 1440p gaming and that it will have a smaller RAM and less powerful CPU than the Series X.

i remember enjoying X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse... didnt play the first one. i probably played through that game at least a few times during the PS2 days. unlocking ironman as a playable character was pretty sweet since he was fairly OP, made playing through it (at least) a second time worthwhile

that type of game does seem fairly outdated though, expected something much better from the Avengers game

Been gaming a bit. Bouncing back and forth between indie Arcade style games and AAA.

- Uncharted 4. Best level design in the series. Fantastic 5.1 audio mix. Best I've heard in gaming to date.

- DmC Remake. As much as I love the Clover/Platinum beat 'em ups, I've never played a Devil May Cry game. Fans of the series say this was a dumbing down. I found it fun, but I can see how the mechanics in this one make pulling off big combos relatively easy, since Dante has many single moves that are basically auto combos.

- Gears 4. It's Gears of War. Same old, same old. But fun.

- Dishonored 2. Solid follow up.

- Waveform. Had the distinction of being the cheapest game on Steam for like 19 cents. That said, awesome game. Cleverly designed and addictive.

- Audiosurf. Puzzle racing game that builds levels using your music library. Solid.

Currently on Rainbow 6 Vegas and Hotline Miami 2.

just finished Mafia DE. I found it very boring. All that ducking and shooting behind an object was just too much for me. And 3/4 of every mission is just driving. I didn't play the original, or I just don't remember I did, but yea, this was just not for me. The graphics look pretty nice, especially while driving... Oh, the game is also kinda glitchy and some animations are just weird. I thought it was cause it was the original version, but after I dowloaded the update it was still the same. It took me 6-7h to complete it while not skipping cut scenes. I am happy it got cracked, cause buying this would just disappoint me.

Mortal Kombat is just too big to download and finish that 4h story mode. I heard you also cant use the kryps so no unlocking in the cracked version. The game also feels kinda slow compared to 9 and 10.

I use the settings Hardware Unboxed recommends and it barely looks different from all ultra, though since my card has 6GB I can still leave ultra textures on. I'd definitely wait for your 3070 though (hope you land one), as my 1660 Super is just barely enough to get a consistent 60 fps in the game with those settings so 1060 will probably struggle. About the only noticeable difference between their recommended settings and ultra is the nighttime illumination that looks way better on high (and same at ultra) since it's a framerate killer and they drop to medium in the game. They set water quality to medium too and it doesn't look great at first, but then in the advance settings you can claw back the visual quality by setting a few water settings to high so it looks like high settings water but performs like medium settings water. It's actually pretty impressive how much performance they could claw back with mostly minimal difference in visuals. Something like 65% higher performance with their tweaks.

I have quite a few settings I'm willing to settle with lowered and I stay between 40-45 FPS.. the G-Sync keeps shit smooth but it still isn't 60 FPS+ smooth and ruins the immersion.. I found the global illumination, water physics, grass AA and shadows (can't remember the others) to be some of the most taxing.. I can't even run the global illumination at all it just isn't worth it.

I hope I get one of the 3070's too.. was gonna try Newegg because I don't like to pay taxes like my dear leader Trump. Do they go on sale at a set time or what? Never dealt with a GPU purchase that was in demand like these.

Dude, Newegg has collected sales tax in Texas for like two years now, ever since Kennedy cast the deciding vote in South Dakota vs Wayfair. Probably have to go somewhere like B&H Photo if you want a chance at not paying sales tax, last I checked maybe a year ago they didn't collect from Texas buyers. I just buy from amazon now instead of newegg since amazon delivers way faster. Newegg has gone downhill ever since being bought out by the chinks and sales tax was the only advantage they had left until they started charging it too. Sad because Newegg was amazing 10-20 years ago. Good price, fast shipping, great customer support. Now it really has none of those. Only good thing about Newegg now is the site organization is still the best of the best, so I look up shit I want to buy on newegg and then get it on amazon.

I play RDR2 with those settings that would usually have me around 80 fps but they can drop into the high 50s occasionally because of cpu bottleneck (still running a 4C/8T Haswell Xeon E3-1231v3), and it actually looks pretty good even when it drops forcing adaptive sync in the Nvidia control panel... eg VSync on when over 60 fps, off when under. I don't know if their drivers just got better but adaptive sync looked terrible on my 970 back in like 2015 when I tried it with Witcher 3 and Crysis 3. But it looks good now.

Yeah it's an amazing game. Took me awhile to figure out how to equip weapons and level up. I swear I was trying to kill that initial werewolf barehanded for the longest time. :lol

Dude if you don't have the DLC, buy it ASAP. It's on sale right now for $10. Best part of the game by far. The Old Hunters DLC is what makes Bloodborne the game of the century for me.

Newegg actually snitched on their Connecticut customers so that they received bills from the state for sales tax on purchases going 4 or 5 years back. Only reason I bought anything from them after that was I got a newegg giftcard as a present but I'll never spend money there again unless they're a lot cheaper than amazon because the shipping sucks from newegg.

Honestly, if I was going to spend that much I think I'd be very tempted to aim for 3080. Not only because it's about 30% faster than 3070, but also because of the 10GB vs 8GB VRAM. Usually 80 series are pretty horrible value but this one is solid IMO, even better value than 3070. Also AMD is revealing their new gpus tomorrow. Leaks suggest the new big Navi should significantly outperform 3080 and maybe even beat the 3090 on rasterization, but only just edges out 2080 Ti on raytracing, so gets its teeth kicked in by 3080 on RT. And I strongly doubt they have any upscaling tech anywhere near as good as DLSS-2.0 looks right now.

Man you'll fucking love it, some of the boss fights are incredible. Even better than the Sigrun Valkyrie fight in God of War. Don't beat the game before doing the DLC though, otherwise you'll have to start a new game and progress up to the point of being able to do the DLC.

Sigrun fight felt more mechanical, as almost every attack had a specific counter you had to be ready for. In that response Sigrun felt more like a Sekiro boss than a Soulsborne boss.

btw, i know you played on Give Me a Challenge. Sigrun was even harder on Give Me God of War, and in on NG+ she has an even more expanded moveset. GMGOW+ Sigrun was a different beast altogether

Bloodborne was so much more frantic and chaotic... a different approach altogether. especially the final DLC boss

So is there much good reason to keep high honor in Red Dead 2? I had a guy try to horsejack me so I put a couple in his head but a witness saw me as I was moving the body, so I had to go kill him an dump him in the river. Then I saw a guy get killed by wolves so naturally I looted his body and then got an icon showing my honor had dropped. This game feels like it'll be so much more fun to play as a stick up man than honorable cowboy. Thoughts, spurraider21? Xevious? Don't know why this game didn't hook me when I played at launch but really enjoying it now.

Honor level goes up and down super easy. I wouldn't worry about it too much early on, just have fun. But end game storyline stuff was absolutely designed for a high honor Arthur. You miss out on IMO essential side missions and option dialogue if your honor level is low during chapter six. There's a reason why Redemption is in the title (besides the fact that it's a sequel). Arthur goes through a ton of changes/growth throughout the story. It's honestly one of the most satisfying character arcs to me, especially if you take the time to read his journal.

About halfway through BOTW, beautiful peaceful game but I find myself missing the linear gameplay of past Zelda games. I'm not liking the weapons constantly breaking and having to look for more either. Dungeons are also something I miss so far. Probably rank it at 4 or 5 in my top Zelda games list. It's just missing that Zelda feel for some reason. The open world is beautiful and interesting but I don't know how I feel about it in a Zelda game.

The dungeons in the game are really good but they're so few and far between. Big reason the game is more an 8/10 to me than the 10/10 everyone else gave it. Though it is no question the best game I have ever played for aimless exploration, even above GTA V in that aspect.

Later on in the game, I pretty much have a problem with too many weapons/shields/bows. Master mode is a bit more difficult in this but in the end, I still had the same problem. From raiding hyrule castle for its weapons or killing lynels and jacking their weapons, I always had too many.
I missed the dungeons too but it wasn't a deal breaker, as too many past zelda games had absolutely shitty dungeons. I don't think this game would've benefitted from having an awful ice dungeon where you're constantly sliding, a sky-type dungeon where you're always on tiny platforms, or the generic death mountain lava dungeon.

Watchdogs Legion is pretty fun so far. i'm getting used to the idea of having multiple operatives to use and have enjoyed giving each their own style tbh. biggest gripe thus far is the weapon system, really annyoing that you can't just buy/print weapons like in the first two and can only use the non-leathal pistol/shotgun/nade launcher if you are using an operative that doesnt have their own weapon already. but really like the cargo drone mechanic they added

Hmmm, probably the one I like the least so far in the series. Driving around town isn't a lot of fun, IMVHO, unfortunately. There are fast travel spots though, so it can be worked around.

The melee is good though, but the rest of the mechanics are a bit of rinse and repeat.

i've enjoyed the driving but London isn't as easy to traverse at fast speeds like Chicago/SF were in the last two. i also really do not like that they got rid of a lot of the environment hacking mechanics. hacking a stoplight and making all the traffic crash into each other is sorely missed here

Ugh I didn't realize you can't restore a worn gun. If there is one complaint I have about the game, it's the inventory management. EVERY fucking gun is stored on your horse. It would've been nice to have a chest to unload a lot of the shit you never plan on using to back at camp or something. There are a lot of unique guns you'll pick up and by the endgame you're scrolling through a list of shit trying to get to the ones you actually want to use.
