Russia faces gasoline shortage — report

Diesel fuel prices for Russian consumers have sharply increased, rising nearly 10% just in the past week. Gasoline prices have also surged by more than 20% since the beginning of the year, according to the report.

The decreased fuel supply has forced an increasing number of Russian enterprises to halt production. Politico notes that Moscow has cut its fuel exports to near historical lows — last week, exports amounted to 712,000 tons, while in the same week in 2023, Russia exported 844,000 tons of petroleum fuel.

Igor Yushkov, an analyst at Russia's National Energy Security Fund, stated that prices are unlikely to drop anytime soon, and that Russia will probably have to start importing gasoline from neighboring Belarus.

Last year, Russia had to ban the export of gasoline and diesel fuel due to a domestic market shortfall to reassure motorists and stimulate the agricultural sector.

The United States has formally accused Russia of using chemical weapons “as a method of warfare” against Ukraine and imposed sweeping new sanctions on Russian firms and government bodies.

Russia used 76 air attack weapons in the assault, including 55 missiles and 21 drones launched from Russia and Russian controlled areas, according to Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk. At least 59 weapons were destroyed overnight, he added.

US announces $400 million military aid package for Ukraine

The US announced on Friday a new $400 million military aid package to Ukraine.

The package includes weapons Ukraine has been asking for, including Patriot missile system munitions, High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMAR) systems and ammunition, Stinger anti-air missiles, 155mm artillery rounds, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles (MRAPs), among other equipment.

Putin replaces Russia’s Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Andrey Belousov as Minister of Defense, replacing current minister Sergei Shoigu, the Kremlin said on Sunday night.

“Sergei Shoigu was relieved of his post as Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation by presidential decree and was also appointed by decree of the President of the Russian Federation as Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

Shoigu will also be Putin’s deputy in the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation, Peskov said.

Nikolai Patrushev, the previous Secretary of the Security Council, was relieved of his position and is “due to a transfer to another job,” Peskov said.

Belousov previously served as first deputy prime minister.
