Ukraine Used Prized ATACMS Missiles To Strike Unique Cold War-Era Space Communications Station

Ukraine struck the NIP-16 Deep Space Communications site in Vitino, Crimea on Saturday, one of two attacks it carried out on the occupied peninsula over the weekend.

Those strikes were carried out by U.S.-made Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) short-range ballistic missiles, Russian and Ukrainian sources claim.

The first attack over the weekend struck a space communications facility where there about 20 radar dishes, with some arrays packing eight dishes combined in giant fixtures. Low-resolution satellite imagery obtained by The War Zone shows that it was indeed attacked. However, the quality of the images makes it is hard to determine the exact extent of the damage. One was taken on June 22, before the attack, and the other after on June 24.

After it was seized by Russia following the 2014 takeover of Crimea, it was turned over to its Aerospace Forces, which began the modernization of the facility, the Ukrainian Defense Express news outlet reported.

“As of 2017, reports stated the center had received 10 new systems and the upgrading was still proceeding,” the publication continued. “The initial plan was to spend 1.8 billion rubles on the reconstruction of one radio telescope alone: at the exchange rate of that time, cost about $28 million.”

WASHINGTON, June 27 (Reuters) - A Russian satellite has broken up into more than 100 pieces of debris in orbit, forcing astronauts on the International Space Station to take shelter, U.S. space agencies said.
There were no immediate details on what caused the break-up of the RESURS-P1 Russian Earth observation satellite, which was decommissioned in 2022. U.S. Space Command said on Thursday there was no immediate threat as it tracks the debris swarm.

The event occurred around 10 a.m. Mountain Time (1600 GMT) on Wednesday, Space Command said. It occurred in an orbit near the space station, prompting U.S. astronauts on board to shelter in their spacecraft for roughly an hour, NASA's Space Station office said.

Radars from U.S. space-tracking firm LeoLabs detected the satellite releasing several fragments up until 6 p.m. Mountain Time, the company said.

Sadly, the Russian artillery is making a big difference. They just blow the shit out of an area from 5 miles away and then move in after everything is destroyed. The ukranian defensive line is suffering horrendous casualties from the artillery that they can't respond to. The long range stuff the US is sending may be too little too late. There is a three week learning curve just to teach the Ukrainians how to use it.

Russian coal industry profit drops by 93% amid sanctions and loss of clients – The Moscow Times

The profit of the Russian coal industry, one of the largest raw materials industries in the economy, fell by 93%, or 15 times, over the year, The Moscow Times reported on June 27 with reference to Rosstat data.

Profitable companies accumulated 72 billion rubles ($840.4 million) of profit in January-April 2024, while unprofitable companies recorded 58 billion rubles ($677 million) of loss. In total, the Russian coal industry made 14 billion rubles ($163.4 million) in profit. This is almost 200 billion ($2.3 billion) less than in the same period a year earlier.

India, which accounts for about a third of Russia's coal exports, reduced purchases by 22% to 6.76 million tons in March-May, NV reported earlier. Exports to Turkiye, South Korea, and Japan also fell.

At least 7 people, including children, were killed and at least 31 injured after Russia launched a missile strike on the town of Vilniansk in Ukraine’s southern Zaporizhzhia region (https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/07/europe/russian-controlled-zaporizhzhia-nuclear-reactor-damaged-following-drone-attack/index.html) on Saturday, according to Ukrainian officials.
“[Today] is a day of mourning in Zaporizhzhia region for those killed in the enemy attack on Vilniansk,” Ivan Fedorov, the head of Zaporizhzhia regional military administration, said on Sunday. “There is unspeakable pain.”
Three children were among those killed and eight children were among the injured, Fedorov said.
The attack damaged critical infrastructure, as well as a retail store and residential buildings, he said Saturday. Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said trade pavilions, households and vehicles also caught fire as a result.
Speaking to the National Police, one local resident who witnessed the strike said: “It was a weekend, everyone was having a rest … it wasn’t even late, it wasn’t dark, a missile hit.”
She continued: “Children died, children were injured. So did adults. For no reason. The children had a graduation party, they were graduating from school. They were planning their future.”

Ukraine has foiled an alleged plot to overthrow the government that “would have played into Russia’s hands,” security officials in the war-torn country said Monday.
In a Telegram post, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) claimed the plot organizers planned to trigger a riot in Kyiv on June 30 as a distraction to seize control of the Ukrainian parliament and remove the military and political leadership from power.
It is unclear how viable the planned plot was, or if those accused have any connection with Russia, which has waged a devastating full-scale invasion against its southwestern neighbor for nearly two and a half years.
Four suspects have been identified, with two held in custody, the SBU said. They face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty. The SBU said it seized weapons and ammunition, as well as cellphones, computers and other records “with evidence of criminal action.”
The office of Ukraine’s prosecutor general said the alleged leader of the plot “is a head of a non-governmental entity, who already had the experience of participating in fruitless provocative events.”
The suspect rented a hall with a capacity of 2,000 people and was looking to recruit military personnel and armed guards from private companies to “carry out the seizure” of parliament, the prosecutor’s office said. It is unclear if authorities are seeking any more suspects.
“To implement the criminal plan, the main organizer involved several accomplices—representatives of the community organizations from Kyiv, Dnipro, and other regions,” the SBU said.
The alleged scheme in Kyiv comes as Russia has made slow but steady battlefield gains in recent months, exploiting Ukraine’s diminishing manpower and reliance on the West for weapons (https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/18/politics/cia-director-ukraine-russia-warning/index.html) – and uncertainty over the future of that military aid.

Russia drops from top ten largest economies worldwide


Amidst a decline in the ruble’s value, Russia has fallen out of the top ten largest economies globally, slipping from 8th to 11th place, according to a World Bank report released on July 4, with Italy, Brazil, and Canada surpassing its growth rates last year.

In 2023, Russian economy grew by 3.6%, which is more than the global economy, but due to the weakening of the ruble to US dollars, its size decreased by 10.8%, from $2.27 trillion to $2.02 trillion, reported the World Bank.

In terms of GDP per capita it amounted to $13,817 in 2023 compared to $15,445 a year earlier, putting Russia in 86th place (between Mexico and Argentina).

These are just some of the narratives and fake claims spun by Russia’s intricate disinformation network ahead of France’s Sunday parliamentary elections, according to French officials and cyber security experts.

Analysis of a range of sources reveals a co-ordinated campaign of disinformation that has smeared Mr Macron, while promoting Eurosceptic far-right leaders Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, who have voiced opposition to Ukraine.

One tactic Russia has used is fake websites masquerading as legitimate news sources, which target UK, US and French voters with disinformation.

A website masquerading as French news outlet Le Point under a similar URL published an article saying Nato was preventing France from becoming a global power and that “an opposition victory” would help France regain its independence.

The claim was then circulated on X by President Vladimir Putin’s network of Russian bots, according to Bot Blocker/Anti-bot for Navalny, an organisation that exposes Russian social media attacks.

The X post claims Ms Le Pen will refuse to allow Mr Macron to determine the strategy for Ukraine and defence issues.

Another fake website posing as French newspaper Le Parisien claimed Mr Bardella and the RN (National Rally party) “wants to restore French Independence”, while “Macron delivers France to pro-American globalists”, adding: “Jordan Bardella proposes a return of the origins of sovereignty.”

Russian troops have taken control of parts of a key hilltop town in eastern Ukraine, a strategic gain that could pose major problems for Ukrainian troops (https://cnn.com/world/europe/ukraine)trying to defend the area from further advances.
The relatively small town of Chasiv Yar has played an outsized role in the conflict and has been battered by months of intense fighting. Sitting on high ground, it is seen as a gateway to the parts of the Donetsk region that are still in Ukrainian hands. The town overlooks the lower-laying areas to the north, towards the bigger cities of Kramatorsk and Slovyansk, and to the west towards Dnipropetrovsk region.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian military said that Kyiv forces retreated from the district after their defensive positions were destroyed and it became clear that efforts to hold onto the neighborhood were becoming “inexpedient” because of the risk to the defending troops.

“Capturing Chasiv Yar would allow the Russians to bring in more (First Person View) drones, drone operators and artillery into the area, and it would give them an advantageous position to conduct ground strikes and drone strikes on Ukrainian troops,” Konrad Muzyka, a defense analyst who has been tracking the conflict closely, told CNN in an interview.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has made no secret of the fact that he wants his forces to control the whole of Donestk. The region was dissected in half when the war broke out in 2014 after Russian-backed rebels seized government buildings in towns and cities across eastern parts of the region.
While Russia took control of a other parts of Donetsk following the launch of its full-scale invasion in February 2022, it never managed to occupy the whole of the region. If Chasiv Yar was to fall to Russian hands, it could put bigger cities to the west at risk.
“Chasiv Yar the largest settlement on the way to Kramatorsk, so if Russians were to capture it, then the Ukrainians would not necessarily have the chances to rely on urban settlements to decrease the tempo of Russian attacks,” Muzyka said.
Advancing through an urban environment is much more difficult compared to open terrain.
Chasiv Yar itself has been the epicenter of the fight for months. Bakhmut, which sits about 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of Chasiv Yar, fell to Russia at a huge cost to its troops in May 2023, after many months of intense fighting. By the time Moscow claimed control over the city, it was almost completely destroyed.]]]

A barrage of Russian missile strikes hit targets in cities across Ukraine on Monday, including a children’s hospital in Kyiv, killing at least 20 people and injuring 50 more, the interior ministry said.
Ukrainian officials said the rare daytime aerial assault had struck Ukrainian cities during rush hour, including Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Slovyansk and Kramatorsk.
Among the buildings hit was Kyiv’s Okhmatdyt hospital, Ukraine’s largest children’s medical center (https://www.cnn.com/videos/world/2022/03/03/ukraine-children-hospital-shelling-underground-lead-ward-pkg-vpx.cnn), which has been crucial in supporting some the sickest children from across the country.
Videos from the scene showed volunteers working with police and security services to sift through the rubble as smoke billowed from the hospital, as staff described how they tried to rush children to safety in the wake of the attack.
Natalia Sardudinova, a senior nurse, described the moment the strike hit the hospital saying that “it was scary, but we survived.”
“It was loud, the windows were crunching,” she told CNN. “As soon as the alarm sounded, the children were taken out into the corridor.”
“Everything was in smoke, there was no air to breathe. The doctor was cut by shrapnel. The windows and doors were blown out. One nurse in the hospital was heavily injured,” Sardudinova added. “My hands are still shaking. They don’t let anyone in now, they are afraid it will collapse.”
Yulia Vasylenko, the mother of an 11-year-old cancer patient at the hospital, said her son Denys was evacuated outside following the strike.
“My son is on painkillers. He has cancer. He has been without medication for half a day. He was brought down the stairs from the third floor. There was smoke (and) heavy dust,” she said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy said in a post on X that the exact number of casualties at the hospital was not yet known and that “there are people under the rubble” but that everyone from doctors to local residents are helping clear debris in the strike’s aftermath.

US developing new 'extended-range' missile for Ukraine's Air Force

The U.S. is developing a new long-range and relatively affordable missile specifically for Ukraine's Air Force.

A request for information (RFI) in relation to the new munition was first released in January, and an update on July 10 expressly stated the intended recipient would be Kyiv.

The new weapon to be developed is an Extended-Range Attack Munition (ERAM), that aims to be a low-cost, quick to produce air-launched missile with a range of around 460 kilometers.

It will be a 500-pound (225 kilogram)-class munition with a fragmentation warhead capable of destroying armored targets.

"This munition is pivotal for accelerating Ukraine’s capability to meet warfighter needs efficiently and effectively and provides an affordable mass weapon to be produced at scale," the update reads.

Other criteria include a hit accuracy of 10 meters of a target and the ability to operate GPS effectively even when the enemy engages electronic counter-measures.
