Vladimir Putin is allegedly hiding his reported lover Alina Kabaeva — and their children — in Switzerland as the war in Ukraine rages.

houghts on migration, community and helping, part 1
yesterday my sister left Kyiv and arrived to our relatives’ family in the western Ukraine. I sobbed with relief when I got her message “we’re in the train”. knowing she is relatively safe (no one is fully safe in Ukraine now), is such a relief for me.
this past week of staying in touch with her over distance, communicating with her as she lived through shelling and slept on a bathroom floor, trying to convince her to leave and hearing a sturdy “no” for days on end has taught me something important about a) migration and b) helping someone from a distance or from a place of (more) privilege. here are a few take-aways:
people don’t want to leave their homes as easily as you might assume. even if they are in a city that’s bombed, in a country under full-blown attack. a decision to leave is the hardest one most people make. it has to do with many reasons, but among some of the most common I’ve heard from my sisters and friends who are still there:
1. we don’t want to uproot ourselves again (there has been a wave of migration in Ukraine since 2014, almost 2mln people were displaced due to war);
2. we want to stay connected to our city, our land, our home - for many people this is a source of security and sanity, knowing they still have their home, to them being elsewhere “safe” but not at home feels worse;
3. I don’t want to travel alone - it’s too stressful, too dangerous, too lonely.
this last argument was the breaking point for my sister - she kept waiting for her friend, as well as our cousin, to be ready to leave with her. she could not imagine doing this by herself. I couldn’t understand her, I was angry and upset, until I remembered my own process and logic: I was able to leave quickly because I was in a group, with people I trusted. we made joint decisions, we shared resources, contacts, food. we supported each other and we lived through this together. we became a community. we were also met and welcomed into a community in Romania, where we spent an incredible week recovering from all the stress of travel. doing all of this alone, with no destination in mind, would have been much, much harder for me.
I also remembered a brief conversation I had with a woman at the Romanian border as we both waited for our documents. she crossed the border but wasn’t planning to stay in Romania, rather she planned to join her daughter in Portugal (which has a big Ukrainian diaspora, btw). she too, was longing to reunite with family, to recreate a community she might have left in Ukraine.
when we think of migration, especially war-related migration, the discourse is often too individualistic and too materialistic: we need to get those people (bodies) into safety. the indicator of “safety” then is “a body crossing the border into a peaceful country”. while in reality, security is very often a much more holistic experience, rooted in relationships and interdependencies. it has materiel and non-material dimensions, and - I dare say - it is a communal experience. again, you have no idea how many people are not leaving Ukraine’s most hard-hit places because their grandparents, neighbors, cats and dogs, are there with them. I see in these stories how a choice of community overrides a choice of individual safety. (and those people deserve all our support and help now. scroll down for previous posts on my page with info on how to help).
do we think of that, when we develop refugee integration programs? do we see and hear (im)material needs that go beyond individual? do we consider all the intricacies that are implied in (re)creating a community: linguistic, gendered, cultural, class, etc, etc. do we make necessary legislative changes to allow, and encourage, family reunification? or are we so used to the western idea of “autonomy” (rooted in privilege), that we assume the same works for others? I believe, these are questions to be asked as Europe grapples with yet another refugee crisis.
and here’s my lesson on “helping”: I understood my sister only after she explained her reasoning to me three or four times. I started asking myself, how much of my desire to get her out was driven by my own anxiety and guilt, and how much space I was giving to her feelings and needs in the process? most importantly, was I able and willing to hear her “no” and still say “just know that I am here if you need anything”? and say it not just once, but again and again, waiting for her to reach out when she’s ready. this place of “helping from afar” was a new one for me. I know many of you share it as well, watching Ukraine on your screens. I hope I’ve been humbled in this experience and restrained in my rescue syndrome. I hope I am starting to learn what ethical help, rooted in needs of the vulnerable, looks like. I’ve read a lot about this in my post-colonial theory class, and now is the time to put it to practice.
I am grateful that my sister was able to make a decision that was ultimately right for HER. I too made an important decision today - to uproot from my comfortable home in Romania. I am now on the road to Berlin, where I am first and foremost also seeking a community - of activists, friends, colleagues, who are landing there right now. I have realized acutely how much being with others is part of my security. yet this time I am arriving not just as an activist or a tourist. I have no return ticket… who will I be there? how will I be seen? as a refugee? as a sister in distress? as someone who needs solidarity? I know that I want to find a place of being and doing that both acknowledges my vulnerability (without making me a victim), and my immense privilege (without making me blind to it).
I look forward to navigating this complexly and to sharing it with you here. I do hope to challenge you (and myself), and to be challenged by you in this journey. we all have a lot to learn from this, if we keep our hearts open. if you are willing, please share in comments what you’ve learnt or what challenged you in my story today. I’d love to hear.

Russia’s Sberbank collapses 95% on London stock exchange as it exits Europe

For so many decades, the US Federal Reserve prided itself in stating that every single dollar ever printed is backed by the sovereign and will be honoured. However, ‘Bidenism’ killed this promise twice over – by freezing half of Afghanistan’s seven billion dollar-denominated foreign exchange reserves and all of Russia’s foreign exchange dollars. Any central bank will now think several times before buying US treasuries and will always look for alternative safe assets, even if they are a shade less safe.
In two decades, the Euro has emerged as a safe asset and attracted 30% of Russian foreign exchange reserves, 10% each in Germany and France. With 23% reserves in gold, 13% in yuan and 10% in Germany, Putin seems to have hedged well when he started drawing down reserves in the US from 2016-17, down to almost zero in 2021.


Fourthly, China will continue to draw down its US dollar-denominated foreign exchange reserves of about $1 trillion in its war chest of $3.4 trillion. Since 2005, China’s share of dollar securities has fallen from 80% to just 30%.


The US’s consistent targeting of Chinese foreign exchange reserves and foreign exchange management, by naming it a ‘currency manipulator’, and its recent last-recourse to economic sanctions, is not lost on Chinese strategists. Even though the Yuan forms only about 3-5% of world trade, the trajectory, through trade-expansionism into EU, South America, Africa and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) nations, is clear.


Coupled with the largest quantum of national central bank digital currency (CBDCs or e-yuans) already issued, possibilities of a yuan-inspired undeclared non-dollar bloc of nations are becoming realistic.


Fifthly, Asian and African central banks will be getting to their drawing boards to reassess their reliance on US dollar, safe havens, trade dependencies and reliability or not of the American hand. Given the subtle yet silent (but not very comforting) support from the US over Chinese aggression, India’s sustained abstentions on anti-Russia resolutions are very strong statements of support. During the half-century since the United States went off gold in 1971, the world’s central banks have operated on the dollar standard, holding their international monetary reserves in the form of U.S. Treasury securities, U.S. bank deposits and U.S. stocks and bonds. The resulting Treasury-bill standard has enabled America to finance its foreign military spending and support its deindustrialization-driven chronic trade deficits by creating dollar IOUs that other countries accept. U.S. balance-of-payments deficits end up in the central banks of payments-surplus countries as their reserves, while Global South debtors need dollars to pay their bondholders and conduct their foreign trade.


This monetary privilege – dollar seignorage – has enabled U.S. diplomacy to impose neoliberal policies on the rest of the world, without having to use much military force of its own except to grab Middle Eastern oil.


The recent escalation of U.S. sanctions blocking Europe, Asia and other countries from trade and investment with Russia, Iran and China has imposed enormous opportunity costs – the cost of lost opportunities – on U.S. allies. And the recent confiscation of the gold and foreign reserves of Venezuela, Afghanistan and now Russia, along the targeted grabbing of bank accounts of wealthy foreigners (hoping to win their hearts and minds, along with recovery of their sequestered accounts), has ended the idea that dollar holdings or those in its sterling and euro NATO satellites are a safe investment haven when world economic conditions become shaky.


So I am somewhat chagrined as I watch the speed at which this U.S.-centered financialized system has de-dollarized over the span of just a year or two. The basic theme of my Super Imperialism has been how, for the past fifty years, the U.S. Treasury-bill standard has channeled foreign savings to U.S. financial markets and banks, giving dollar diplomacy a free ride. I thought that de-dollarization would be led by China and Russia moving to take control of their economies to avoid the kind of financial polarization that is imposing austerity on the United States. But U.S. officials are forcing them to overcome whatever hesitancy they had to de-dollarize.

By imposing sanctions on richest Russians closest to Putin, U.S. officials hoped to induce them to oppose his breakaway from the West, and thus to serve effectively as NATO agents-of-influence. But for Russian billionaires, their own country is starting to look safest.

As much as it may be hard to believe... Russia didn't commit nearly enough troops to do the job.

They have probably lost somewhere between 5 and 10% of their starting troops. By the looks off it, they have lost a lot of materiel as well.

The three commanders that I think Putin had shot will probably be just the first of their commanders lost to Putins annoyance.

Supplies, disruptions in communications, poor training. Low morale. I would guess we will see more desertions of whole units en masse.

The war in Ukraine has been going on for 10 days. In a bit more than a week 1 300 000 Ukrainians fled the country, mostly women, children, elderly. Same number of people asked for asylum in EU during the whole year 2015.
10 days. This is a humanitarian crisis on a scale that Europe has not seen since WW2.
In less than two weeks 700 000 Ukrainian refugees fled to Poland. And Poland welcomed them.
If you know me, you know I am not a big fan of my country. Poland has been acting like an ass quite often, especially when it comes to dealing with refugees. There is a lot to criticize and there will be a lot in the future, no doubt about it. But this time the Poles have got it right.
In 10 days hundreds of private flats, houses and hotel rooms have been provided, free of charge. Couches and mattresses have been offered, as well as food, clothes and money. Trucks and private cars carrying sleeping bags, meds and meals are coming to the Polish-Ukrainian border. On their way back, they bring refugees. There are hundreds of volunteers working 24/7 on major train stations and bus terminals, helping the refugees with everything from finding a shelter to buying plane tickets or claiming asylum.
I am writing this not to boast, but to ask for your help. We have miraculously managed to provide a makeshift safety net, but it can only hold for so long. There is more people coming.

These things are not really very easy to use, but the Russians have a LOT of ADA and SAMs in their troop mix.

The irony is that this stuff is the most likely to be abandoned because it is useless in the fight against UKR, but priceless for UKR to blunt the Russian airforce.

I think the russian crews also know how useful it is to UKR. The fact that these things are being captured intact, with no attempt to scuttle it, says volumes about the motivation of the crews abandoning them.
