Potato Deficit Pushes Belarus to End Food Import Ban on EU States

Belarus has lifted its ban on importing key food staples—including potatoes, apples, onions, and cabbage—from so-called “unfriendly states,” including European Union member countries. The decision, effective from May 27, 2025, was officially confirmed by the Belarusian Ministry of Agriculture and Food and reported by state news agency BelTA.

The easing of import restrictions comes against the backdrop of rising domestic food inflation and a pronounced potato deficit, which has gripped both Belarus and neighboring Russia in recent months. The Belarusian government cited the move as aligned with its broader policy of “openness, peacefulness, and good neighborliness,” a message it has also used to promote visa-free travel policies for EU citizens.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Agriculture, the import restrictions—first imposed in early 2022 as a retaliatory measure against Western sanctions—had been “restrictive for both domestic consumers and regional trade flows.” Officials framed the reversal as a pragmatic response to evolving market needs and recent European Union tariff increases on Belarusian agricultural exports.

In April 2025, the EU introduced higher tariffs on certain agricultural imports from Belarus, including dairy and meat products, as part of broader economic measures in response to Minsk’s support for Russia’s war in Ukraine. The Belarusian government portrayed its own policy shift as one of restraint and flexibility in contrast to Brussels’ more punitive posture.

The policy change also arrives amid significant strain on Belarus’s domestic food supply. President Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly acknowledged the country’s potato shortage, which he attributed in part to domestic producers prioritizing exports to Russia, where prices have surged due to falling yields and supply issues.

Frontline report: Kazakhstan just took the gunpowder out of Putin’s war in Ukraine

Today, there are interesting updates from the Russian Federation. Here, the increasing number of warnings, which have evolved into outright open threats from Russia, has pushed the Kazakhstan government to take decisive steps towards establishing an alliance with Western countries.

From changing key trade partners to seeking new military alliances, Kazakhstan seems determined to ensure its stability in the case of any Russian escalation. Kazakhstan, long considered a critical strategic partner by Russia, is increasingly distancing itself from Moscow’s orbit, underscoring a wider fracturing of Russian alliances in Central Asia.

Russia’s interests in Kazakhstan run deep, with military bases such as the famed Baikonur Cosmodrome, a crucial facility for space launches. Kazakhstan’s geographic proximity to vital Russian military installations and its abundant natural resources, including energy and minerals, have traditionally made it strategically significant to Moscow.

...

The recent dismissal of Kazakhstan’s pro-Russian defense minister, Ruslan Zhaksylykov, exemplifies a transition. Known for his overtly pro-Russian stance, he faced domestic criticism due to various scandals, including alleged corruption linked to military procurement, and controversial remarks during meetings with Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, when he declared the Russians a brother people, echoing Kremlin narratives used in Ukraine.

His replacement by Dauren Kosanov, former Commander of the Air Defense Forces, signals a significant policy shift. President Tokayev’s swift administrative moves underscore an accelerated shift toward adopting Western military standards, demonstrated further by the country’s increasingly frequent joint exercises with NATO nations such as Türkiye and recent agreements with the United Kingdom.

...

Historically, Kazakhstan, alongside Uzbekistan, has supplied substantial quantities of cotton pulp used to produce nitrocellulose—critical in the manufacture of Russian explosives and gunpowder. These exports, though officially neutral, have supported Russia’s war industry.

Recent indicators, however, suggest Kazakhstan is cutting back these shipments and exploring Western-oriented military supply chains. If fully redirected toward NATO-aligned countries, the move would deal a serious blow to Russia’s ammunition production capability, especially as the Ukraine war drags on.

Russian analysts and political circles have expressed outrage, framing Kazakhstan’s realignment as a betrayal and warning of lost Russian dominance in Central Asian security affairs.

Russia ‘On the Verge’ of Recession, Putin Minister Says

Russia’s Economy Minister, Maxim Reshetnikov, warned today that the country is “on the verge” of recession, basing his assessment on “current business sentiment and indicators” he shared at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Urging action, he added: “Everything else depends on our decisions,” and called on the central bank to extend “a little love for the economy” by adjusting its monetary stance.

Quoting him: “The numbers indicate cooling, but all our numbers are [like] a rearview mirror.”

“Judging by the way businesses currently feel and the indicators, we are already, it seems to me, on the brink of going into a recession”, he added.

Another of Russia’s colonies is collapsing as Transnistria says it can no longer stay afloat

...
This marks a dramatic unraveling of one of Russia’s longest-standing satellite regions. Since the 1992 war with Moldova, Transnistria has been effectively occupied by Russia. Moscow maintains roughly 1,500 troops in the region along with a large Soviet-era weapons depot and military base in Cobasna—making it one of the most heavily militarized frozen conflicts in Europe. For over three decades, the region has been politically loyal to the Kremlin and economically dependent on Russian energy and subsidies.

Now, that dependency is backfiring. According to the region’s so-called ministers of economy and finance, Transnistria’s economic foundations are collapsing under a dual burden: a crippling energy shortage and geopolitical instability. The Euronews report highlights that industrial output has “dropped almost by half”, while exports plunged by about a third.

More than 450,000 residents are now grappling with service disruptions. Russia halted its free gas deliveries via Ukraine on January 1, 2025—a move widely seen as political blackmail aimed at pressuring Moldova. The result has been catastrophic. Without Russian gas, the Cuciurgan power plant—which provides most of Moldova’s electricity—shut down or switched to coal. Residents are left without reliable heating or hot water.

Water supply interruptions are now routine. Scheduled blackouts of up to four hours per day are common, compounding the hardship for civilians already struggling with inflation and food shortages.

Ukraine’s Armed Forces to Complete Shift to Corps Structure by Year-End — Syrsky

The Armed Forces of Ukraine will complete the main phase of transitioning to a corps-based organizational structure by the end of 2025, Commander-in-Chief General Oleksandr Syrsky stated.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to frontline units in the Sumy region, Syrsky said the shift aims to improve operational efficiency and ease the burden on command structures.

“Last year, we started reorganizing the Armed Forces under combat conditions and initiated the formation of army corps,” he said. “The goal is to improve the effectiveness of our operations and reduce the workload on command elements.”

Under the reform, the number of subordinate units reporting directly to command bodies will be reduced. Operational-strategic groupings (OSUV) will remain, but operational-tactical groupings (OTU) and tactical groups will be phased out in favor of permanent army corps.

Syrsky noted that the first wave of corps-level commands, along with their support units, has completed combat coordination, been assigned areas of responsibility, and received assigned brigades.

One example of the change is the replacement of the Vuhledar tactical group with one of the newly formed army corps of the Ground Forces.

NATO Commits $40B in Security Aid for Ukraine at Summit Kick-Off

...
“You will see important language about Ukraine, including connecting the defense spending up to 2035 to Ukraine, and the need for Ukraine to stay in the fight,” Rutte said. “This is a clear commitment by allies.”

He then announced: “And we have – I can announce that now – new estimates showing that our European and Canadian Allies have stepped up and have already pledged – where we originally would have been able to announce €20 billion over the first three months of this year, it is now they will provide over €35 billion ($40.6 billion) in additional security assistance to Ukraine for the year ahead.”

The NATO chief also highlighted that Ukraine’s path to eventual NATO membership was ensured, and warned that any Russian attack on NATO would prompt a “devastating” response.

“There’s an irreversible path for Ukraine to NATO. That is still the truth today, and it will still be true on Thursday after this summit,” Rutte said.

Blasts erupt at Russian ammo depot in eastern Siberia

A series of powerful explosions erupted this morning, June 25, at a weapons depot in Russia's Zabaykalsky Krai, informs Chita.Ru.

According to official sources, the preliminary cause of the fire was allegedly a landscape fire — dry grass caught fire, and unexploded ordnance began to detonate in the field. Eyewitnesses reported at least 50 explosions.

The area around the military facility in Bolshaya Tura has been cordoned off. Military helicopters (Mi-8s) were deployed to extinguish the blaze, and the Ministry of Emergency Situations is preparing firefighting aircraft — an IL-76 and a Be-200.

Notably, this same depot caught fire in 2014 due to a forest fire. That incident led to explosions that killed 10 people and forced the evacuation of an entire village. Several houses and a school were damaged.

Ukraine Unveils Its Own “KAB” Glide Bombs—Finally Hits Back at Russian Tactics

Ukrainian engineers have developed a domestically produced glide bomb system that converts standard aerial bombs into long-range guided munitions, similar to Russia’s universal planning and correction module kit (UMPK).

According to Defense Express on June 25, the system—nicknamed the Ukrainian KAB—is already undergoing test flights and achieving ranges up to 60 kilometers, with plans to extend it to 80 kilometers.

The project is being led by the Ukrainian design bureau “Medoid,” which confirmed the system has been successfully dropped from a Su-24 frontline bomber in level flight.

Developers intentionally replicated the exterior design of the Russian UMPK to reduce development time but note that the internal components differ, particularly in aiming for greater precision.

The glide kit, designed for use with 500 kg bombs, includes domestically manufactured guidance and wing modules. According to Medoid’s representative, Oleg Vostrykh, the navigation system is Ukrainian-built, although tests are also being conducted with a navigation unit from a leading French manufacturer to improve resistance to electronic warfare. Some components, however, still need to be sourced from abroad.

At this stage, the system is capable of striking targets at 60 kilometers, matching operational requirements set jointly by the Ministry of Defense and the design bureau. The team is now working to increase the effective range to 80 kilometers.

I Fought in Ukraine and Here’s Why FPV Drones Kind of Suck

In 2024 and 2025, I served for six months as an international volunteer on a first-person view attack drone team in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. My team was deployed in the Donbas region, in one of the hottest sectors of the front. When I joined the team, I was excited to work with a cutting-edge tool. By the end of my deployment, I was a bit disillusioned. Let me tell you why.

First-person view drones are unmanned aerial vehicles with four propellers located at the four corners of the craft, roughly in the shape of a square of seven to 12 inches in length on each side. They are controlled by an operator wearing virtual-reality goggles that receive the image from the drone’s forward-facing camera (hence the name first-person view). The most common types of first-person view drones are single-use: They fly directly into their target, where they detonate an explosive charge of up to 1.5 kilograms. These drones are touted as a cheap and accessible solution that can give troops on the tactical level their own organic precision-strike capability. They can supposedly react quickly and strike moving targets or targets in difficult-to-reach locations, such as bunkers, basements, or inside buildings. Proponents of first-person view drones often repeat the claim that as much as 60 to 70 percent of all battlefield casualties in the Russo-Ukrainian War are now caused by drones. This statistic is probably broadly accurate, though it does not differentiate between casualties caused by first-person view drones and other types of uncrewed aerial systems.

Some authors, including experienced military officers writing in these pages, go even further and claim that first-person view drones will precipitate a revolution in how wars are fought, akin to the introduction of muskets. Among other things, they will make concealment and the massing of troops and equipment in the combat zone nearly impossible. Any concentration of troops or vehicles will supposedly be observed immediately and butchered by swarms of cheap, fast drones. Proponents of drones, especially in Silicon Valley, have claimed that drones might completely replace artillery.

...

For sophisticated NATO militaries, instead of investing heavily in the development of first-person view drone capabilities, I would, first of all, recommend ensuring that troops in the field have well-trained organic mortar support with an ample supply of ammunition. Mortars, like artillery, can’t be stopped by bad weather, jamming, or crowded frequencies. Nor can they be impeded by the dark. A well-trained mortar crew can reliably put rounds on a target in less than five minutes. Our first-person view sorties took about 15 minutes from the initial request to the moment the drone struck the target, and that was only when conditions were optimal. A mortar’s price per shot is lower than a first-person view drone. Drones can nominally have an advantage over mortars in range, but this is variable and depends on the terrain, the specific location of the mortars relative to the drone launch site, and the deployment of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets that find the targets for drones or mortars. In practice, I don’t remember a single case when we struck a target that was beyond the range of mortars, and we certainly never struck a target that was beyond the range of artillery.

Secondly, for the rare cases when troops actually need tactical-level, organic precision-strike capability, and when actually carrying out such a strike is feasible, I would recommend something a little bit more high-end than a first-person view drone. NATO countries and their allies already produce high-quality loitering munitions, like the Switchblade. Such loitering munitions provide greater precision in day and night, more ease of use, and higher resistance to electronic interference than first-person view drones. They are also more expensive, but their cost is, like first-person view drones, coming down. The investment in quality seems to justify the greater expense, especially since, at most, one in ten first-person view sorties is a precision strike.

Trumplandia stabbing Ukraine publicly now

The Defense Department held up a shipment of U.S. weapons (https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/national-security/pentagon-halts-weapons-shipment-ukraine-concerns-us-stockpile-rcna216358) for Ukraine this week over what officials said were concerns about its low stockpiles. But an analysis by senior military officers found that the aid package would not jeopardize the American military’s own ammunition supplies, according to three U.S. officials.

The move to halt the weapons shipment blindsided the State Department, members of Congress, officials in Kyiv and European allies, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the matter.

Panic among Moscow’s Elite As Putin Moves to Seize Tycoon’s Empire

...

The case reflects a broader pattern emerging from inside Putin’s wartime Russia: a systematic effort to reclaim private wealth, especially from sectors like gold, oil, and defense—industries that can be redirected to support the war economy. Strukov is not accused of disloyalty. On the contrary, he has long been viewed as a Kremlin ally and served in political roles tied to the ruling party. That loyalty no longer offers protection.

Where earlier purges targeted those who spoke out against the war or fled the country, today’s seizures appear driven by something else: necessity. Sanctions have cut off foreign investment. Oil revenues are shrinking. Budget deficits are growing. Putin’s response is to tap into the fortunes of Russia’s oligarchs—those he once empowered—as a new source of funding.

This is not an isolated incident. In recent months, several high-profile business figures have been hit with sudden legal trouble, “unexpected” deaths, or state-backed asset takeovers. For years, the Putin-era social contract guaranteed immense wealth in exchange for loyalty. That arrangement is collapsing under the weight of war.

A court hearing scheduled for July 8 will determine the fate of Strukov’s empire. But the message to Russia’s business elite has already been delivered: no one is too rich, too loyal, or too connected to be safe. As the Kremlin scrambles to sustain a war it cannot afford, billionaires may find themselves transformed overnight—from oligarchs into targets.

Russian Propaganda Calls for War With Azerbaijan After Aliyev Backs Ukraine

Russian Z-affiliated military bloggers have begun calling for preparations for possible aggression against Azerbaijan following remarks by President Ilham Aliyev, in which he stated that Ukraine should’ve not accepted Russian occupation.

The outlet Agentstvo. Novosti reported on this.

Speaking at the 3rd Global Media Forum on July 20, President Aliyev responded to a question from a Ukrainian journalist, asking what advice he, as the leader of a “victorious nation,” would offer to Ukraine.

The President of Azerbaijan stated that he advises “never to give up and never to accept the violation of territorial integrity.”

In addition, he announced that Azerbaijan was preparing documents to submit to an international court regarding the AzAL plane crash in Kazakhstan, which likely occurred due to being struck by Russian air defense over Grozny.

Following these statements, Russian propagandists simultaneously began advocating for armed aggression against Azerbaijan.

For instance, blogger Aleksey Zhyvov called Aliyev’s remarks “blatantly hostile” and claimed that the Caspian Sea “may soon become a new theater of war.” Meanwhile, the channel Zapiski Veterana wrote that Baku was “turning into a NATO outpost” and was “consciously following Ukraine’s path.”

Other well-known Russian propagandists, including Semyon Pegov (WarGonzo), called a conflict with Baku “inevitable” and urged people to “start preparing for it now,” accusing Azerbaijan of “open Russophobia.”

Similar messages have been spread by channels run by Yuriy Podolyak, Arkhangel Spetsnaza, and Two Majors.

Australian Abrams battle tanks arrive in Ukraine

...
Australia’s Department of Defence then said on July 19, “Ukraine has now taken possession of the majority of these tanks, with delivery of the final tranche to occur in the coming months.”

Australia pledged to give Kyiv 49 Abrams tanks that it recently retired. Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia, commented on X that “this powerful gesture of solidarity is more than military support – it’s a lifeline, a message that we’re not alone in our darkest hour.”

Valued at approximately A$245 million – around US$160 million – this gift comprises part of A$1.5 billion in assistance that Australia has promised since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

The Abrams were modified for Ukrainian requirements before being shipped, with Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy noting that “these modified M1A1 Abrams tanks will deliver more firepower and more mobility to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”

Well, Zelensky is already walking back the changes, so kudos for Ukrainian people for protesting against things they disagree with and standing for what is right. And it's great to see that Ukraine still allows protest even while in the middle of a war for their existence. It really show the high level of freedom and democracy they are fighting for. Russian Navy Day parade cancelled for ‘security reasons’

MOSCOW – Russia said on July 27 a major annual navy parade was cancelled for “security reasons”, without specifying the threat or concern.

“It has to do with the general situation. Security reasons are of utmost importance,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who was quoted by Russian news agencies.

The parade was meant to be the highlight of Russia’s Navy Day, which falls on the last Sunday of July each year and honours the country’s sailors.

But the local authorities in the coastal city of St Petersburg, where the warships and submarines were scheduled to pass, said on July 25 the parade had been cancelled without giving a reason.

Russian President Vladimir Putin – who re-established Navy Day in 2017, nearly four decades after it was cancelled in Soviet times – did not show up in person for the first time.

Instead, he appeared in a video message hailing the “bravery” and “heroism” of Russia’s sailors participating in the offensive in Ukraine.

Poland says 32 people detained and suspected of coordinating with Russia for sabotage

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Tuesday said authorities have detained 32 people suspected of coordinating with Russia to engage in acts of sabotage, according to Polish news agency PAP.

One person has been convicted, while the others are in custody awaiting trial, PAP reported.

The group includes a Pole, Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians, PAP reported, as well as a 27-year-old Colombian man who is accused of two arson attacks in Poland last year at Russia’s behest.

Russia's oil and gas revenues fall for third consecutive month

...
Russia collected 787.3 billion rubles ($9.8 billion) from oil and gas taxes in July, which is down 28% compared to the same month in 2024. Over the first seven months of 2025, oil and gas revenues fell by 19%, totaling 5.52 trillion rubles ($68 billion) — below the 6.78 trillion rubles collected in the same period last year ($84 billion).

Mineral extraction tax (NDPI) revenue — a key component of Russia's energy income — plunged 38% year-on-year to 634.1 billion rubles ($7.9 billion), with oil companies contributing 543.4 billion rubles ($6.7 billion), 36% less than in July 2024.

Gazprom, Russia's state-owned gas giant, has seen its exports to Europe hit lows not seen since the 1970s, according to the Moscow Times. Earlier, in July, the EU approved the 18th sanctions package, lowering the price cap on Russian oil from $60 to $47.6 per barrel.

The cap was originally imposed by the G7 in late 2022 to curtail Russia's oil revenues without destabilizing global markets.

Initially, Russia's Finance Ministry had projected 10.94 trillion rubles ($136 billion) in oil and gas revenue for 2025. That estimate has now been revised downward by nearly a quarter to 8.32 trillion rubles ($103 billion).

Russia's budget deficit hits $61 billion, already surpassing annual target by 30%

Russia's federal budget deficit rose sharply to 4.9 trillion rubles ($61.4 billion) by the end of July, the Russian Finance Ministry reported on Aug. 7.

The government had originally planned for a 3.8 trillion ruble ($47.6 billion) deficit in 2025. The July figure already exceeds the government's full-year target by more than 30%.

The deficit comes as the Kremlin raised defense spending to its highest level since the Cold War and as many Russian officials warn about the possibility of recession.

The deficit jumped by 1.2 trillion rubles ($15 billion) last month alone, "mainly due to a decline in the average price of oil," the ministry said.

In just seven months, it has already spent 25.2 trillion rubles ($316 billion) of the 42.3 trillion rubles ($530 billion) annual budget, with a typical end-of-year spike in spending still ahead.

July revenues totaled 2.7 trillion rubles ($33.8 billion), while expenditures soared to 3.9 trillion rubles ($48.9 billion), up significantly from 3.2 trillion rubles ($40.1 billion) in June.

While the Russian Finance Ministry claimed spending is "on schedule," the overall budget performance paints a bleaker picture. Revenues grew just 2.8% year-on-year in nominal terms, while expenditures jumped 20.8%. In real terms, adjusted for inflation, revenues declined.

Oil and gas revenues, still responsible for roughly one-third of federal income, fell 18.5% over the first seven months of 2025 compared to the same period last year. The decline accelerated from the 16.9% year-on-year drop reported for the first half of the year.

Brand-New Russian Navy Tug Sinks at St. Petersburg Shipyard Before Entering Service

A newly built Russian Navy tugboat, Kapitan Ushakov (Project 23470), sank on August 9 near the pier of the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg during final outfitting works, according to Russian media outlet Fontanka.

The incident occurred in the evening of August 8 when the vessel developed a list to starboard. Emergency services and shipyard personnel attempted to stabilize the tug throughout the night but were unable to prevent it from capsizing. By morning, the vessel had settled on the bottom alongside the pier.

The Baltic Shipyard’s press office stated that the pier was leased by the Yaroslavl Shipbuilding Plant, which was responsible for completing the tug.

According to the Russian Investigative Committee’s regional transport division, the flooding began in the auxiliary machinery compartment, causing the list that led to the sinking. Investigators are conducting a pre-investigation check under an article related to violations of construction safety regulations.

Finland's population was outnumbered 1:40, not 1:3 like Ukraine. And Finland would have continued to fight if the help from western powers wasn't delayed, because they were busy fighting Stalin's ally at the time. And finally, getting abandoned by the west is why Finland fought on the side of Nazis in WW2, so you bring up a really good cautionary tale about abandoning smaller democratic countries.

P.s. the only reason the soviets agreed to peace, is because they planned to take over Finland later.

Trying to boil down Russia's advantage to population edge is wildly simplistic. Ukraine has been given an absolutely historic amount of aid and is still losing. There is no realistic path to victory for Ukraine. You can spin it however you want but even Zelensky now admits Ukraine can't take back all its lost territory by force.

p.s. the only reason the soviets agreed to peace, is because they planned to take over Finland later.

That's a dubious claim given that they had plenty of time to actually do that after WWII and they never did.

Russia’s VTB Bank Sees Lending Income Collapse Amid War Pressure

Russia’s second largest bank, VTB Bank PJSC, is seeing a sustained deterioration in profits made from lending, feeding concern at the bank over its stability amid the economic pressures from President Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.

VTB’s net interest income slumped 49% to 146.8 billion rubles ($1.9 billion) in the six months to June from a year earlier, according to a July 31 results presentation, the latest decline for its core credit operation.

Such a drop is rare among comparable lenders worldwide, and senior managers at the bank are signaling privately that the data don’t reflect the true seriousness of the situation, according to people familiar with the matter who requested anonymity discussing private matters.

...

The Russian government has relied heavily on banks, especially state-owned ones like VTB, to help finance the war effort. Moscow mandated lenders to give preferential loans to enterprises linked to the military-industrial sector, many of which are difficult to account for in public statistics because of restrictions on the publication of data on war-related spending.

Massive increases in government spending on the war and measures to support businesses affected by international sanctions stoked spiraling inflation in Russia and prompted the central bank to hike interest rates to a record high 21% to cool the overheating economy. As interest rates rose, banks have seen a spike in the non-payment and restructuring of loans.

...

Nabiullina has acted decisively
to recapitalize failing lenders and clean up Russia’s banking system in the past. In 2017, the central bank spent at least 1 trillion rubles to rescue three large private banks, Otkritie, Promsvyazbank and B&N Bank, a move it said was necessary to save the financial system.

VTB is one of 13 major lenders considered systemically important by the central bank. Some senior VTB managers have privately pointed to the collapse in net interest income to air concerns that their loan book is in worse shape than other headline statistics imply, according to current and former officials and documents seen by Bloomberg.

Russia has never NOT Broken A Treaty

For Moscow, treaties mean nothing. They are pauses in conflict, meant to buy time, weaken the other side, while preparing for the next stage of war. Over the past century, the Soviet Union and modern Russia have signed dozens of agreements—all worthless, mostly functioning as mere means to disarm intended victims. The record shows a consistent pattern: agreements are tools of strategy, not commitments of principle.

...

From Brest-Litovsk to Budapest, from Riga to Minsk, Russia’s century-long record is clear: it signs treaties when weak and discards them when strong enough to attack again. Each agreement is treated as an act of war by other means—something to lull the victim into lowering defenses before the next strike.

The lesson for Ukraine, Europe, and the wider world: Moscow’s word is worthless. Treaties are not guarantees when signed in the Kremlin—they are traps.

Trump’s intel chief freezes out Five Eyes allies on Ukraine

U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard is blocking America's closest intelligence allies from receiving updates on Russia-Ukraine peace talks in a shock move that upends decades of tight cooperation.

That effectively cuts America's Five Eyes partners — the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand — out of the loop, stunning the intelligence community that has relied on the network since the end of World War II.

In a July 20 directive signed by Gabbard, reported by CBS, the U.S. intelligence community was given orders to classify all analysis and information related to the Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations as "NOFORN," or no foreign dissemination, meaning the information cannot be shared with any other country or foreign nationals.

While it carved out exceptions for diplomatic channels and battlefield intelligence for Ukraine, it strikingly excludes sharing from the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, one of the closest spy networks in the world.

Trump again gives Putin ‘a couple of weeks’ with no sign of Ukraine peace talks underway

President Donald Trump said Friday he will give Russian President Vladimir Putin “a couple of weeks,” further extending his deadline for potential consequences against Moscow after urging the Russian leader to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart in hopes of ending the war.

Asked by CNN’s Alayna Treene if there’s a possibility he does nothing if Putin doesn’t come to the table, Trump said, “We’ll see. I’ll see whose fault it is.”

“If there are reasons why, I will understand that; I know exactly what I’m doing. We’re going to see whether or not they have a meeting, that will be interesting to see, and if they don’t, why didn’t they have a meeting? Because I told them to have a meeting,” Trump said.

“But I’ll know in two weeks what I’m going to do,” Trump added, reprising a timeline he’s repeatedly issued to determine Putin’s willingness to end the war in Ukraine.

In major shift, Trump says he now thinks Ukraine can win back all of its territory taken by Russia

President Donald Trump said Tuesday afternoon that he thinks Ukraine, with help from the European Union, could win back its territory from Russia and return the country to its original borders.

The president had suggested numerous times that giving up some land would be a key component of resolving Ukraine’s war with Russia.

“After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” Trump said in a lengthy post on Truth Social.

The president said that with the financial support of NATO, returning Ukraine to its original borders is “very much an option.” He added that Russia has been “fighting aimlessly for three and a half years a War that should have taken a Real Military Power less than a week to win. This is not distinguishing Russia.”

European diplomats warned the Kremlin this week that NATO is ready to respond to further violations of its airspace with full force, including by shooting down Russian planes, according to officials familiar with the exchange.

At a tense meeting in Moscow, British, French and German envoys addressed their concerns about an incursion by three MiG-31 fighter jets (https://archive.is/o/o5Cyi/https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-19/estonia-summons-russian-envoy-after-airspace-violation) over Estonia last week, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity as the talks took place behind closed doors. Following the conversation, they concluded that the violation had been a deliberate tactic ordered by Russian commanders.

Russian officials have denied their planes crossed into Estonian airspace and insisted that they are not trying to test NATO. They said that a separate incident when drones crossed into Poland was the result of an error. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov this week said Russian military flights are guided by international rules.

French military boards Russia-linked oil tanker suspected of launching drones

French military personnel have boarded an oil tanker named on a list of Russia’s “shadow fleet” vessels and suspected of being a launchpad for mystery drone flights that forced the closure of airports in Denmark last week.

Photos showed navy personnel on the deck of the tanker, known as the Boracay, which has used numerous identities and was one of four Russia-linked vessels in the seas near Denmark at the time of the drone sightings on 22 and 24 September, which so far have not been fully explained.

The tanker was sailing from the Russian oil terminal in Primorsk near St Petersburg, carrying 750,000 barrels of crude oil, to Vadinar in India, but was intercepted by a French naval vessel on Sunday and diverted towards Saint-Nazaire in western France while inquiries continue.

this would be a pivot

The US will provide Ukraine (https://www.theguardian.com/world/ukraine) with intelligence on long-range energy infrastructure targets deep inside Russia, according to overnight reports, a move that would signal a significant shift in White House support for Kyiv.

The decision would be the first example of a change in policy by Donald Trump since his comments on social media towards the end of September that Ukraine could win back (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/sep/23/trump-ukraine-land-lost-russia-nato-oil-imports-un-speech) all of the territories occupied by Russia.

Reports in the Wall Street Journal (https://www.wsj.com/world/u-s-to-provide-ukraine-with-intelligence-for-missile-strikes-deep-inside-russia-ca7b2276?mod=hp_lead_pos2) and Reuters (https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/us-provide-ukraine-with-intelligence-missile-strikes-deep-inside-russia-wsj-2025-10-01/), citing unnamed US sources, said the policy had quietly changed ahead of that statement and that the White House wanted Nato allies to follow suit.

Russia's industrial titans furlough workers as its war economy stalls

MOSCOW, Oct 9 (Reuters) - From railways and automobiles to metals, coal, diamonds and cement, some of Russia's biggest industrial companies are putting employees on furlough or cutting staff as the war economy slows, domestic demand stalls and exports dry up.

The efforts to reduce labour costs show the strain on Russia's economy as President Vladimir Putin and the U.S.-led NATO military alliance square off in Ukraine, Europe's deadliest conflict since World War Two.

Reuters identified six companies in Russia's mining and transport sectors, many of them industrial titans, that have cut their working week in an attempt to reduce wage bills without raising unemployment, according to industry sources.

Cemros, Russia's biggest cement maker, has moved to a 4-day week until the end of the year to preserve staff amid a sharp downturn in the construction industry and a rise in cement imports.

"This is a necessary anti-crisis measure," said Cemros spokesman Sergei Koshkin. "The goal is to keep all our staff." The company has 13,000 employees and 18 plants across Russia.

Koshkin said increased imports from countries including China, Iran and Belarus, combined with a drop in new houses being built, had curbed demand for cement. Cemros expects Russia to consume less than 60 million tonnes of cement this year, a figure last seen during the COVID pandemic.

...

In previous downturns, Russia has bailed out major employers to stem discontent in many of the industrial towns and cities that often rely on one major enterprise.
Russian Railways and the country's car manufacturers received state support during the 2008-2009 global crisis to avoid mass lay offs. In 2022, Russia told car factories to furlough, not fire, staff.

The current economic strains have already forced the government to intervene across the economy, from shoe manufacturers to coal and metals, offering discounts on rail transport, deferral of taxes and targeted state support.

The coal sector, which employs about 150,000 people, has been badly hit as exports decline, according to Russian officials.

Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told Putin in April the sector's financial health was deteriorating, with 30 enterprises - employing roughly 15,000 people and producing around 30 million metric tons annually - at risk of bankruptcy.

In Siberia's Kuznetsk Basin, or Kuzbass, which holds some of the world's biggest coal deposits, local officials said in September that 18 out of 151 enterprises had been shuttered.
Alexander Kotov, a partner at Russian consulting agency NEFT Research, told Reuters that 19,000 coal workers were laid off in the first half of 2025.
