Russia, hit by new US sanctions, halts dollar and euro trade on main bourse

June 12 (Reuters) - New U.S. sanctions against Russia have forced an immediate suspension of trading in dollars and euros on its leading financial marketplace, the Moscow Exchange (MOEX.MM)

The exchange and the central bank rushed out statements on Wednesday - a public holiday in Russia - within an hour of Washington announcing a new round of sanctions aimed at cutting the flow of money and goods to sustain Russia's war in Ukraine.
"Due to the introduction of restrictive measures by the United States against the Moscow Exchange Group, exchange trading and settlements of deliverable instruments in U.S. dollars and euros are suspended," the central bank said.
The move means banks, companies and investors will no longer be able to trade either currency via a central exchange, which offers advantages in terms of liquidity, clearing and oversight.
Instead, they will have to trade over-the-counter (OTC), where deals are conducted directly between two parties. The central bank said it would use OTC data to set official exchange rates.
Many Russians hold part of their savings in dollars or euros, mindful of periodic crises in recent decades when the rouble has crashed in value. The central bank reassured people that these deposits were secure.

Kukharchuk, 34, is at a prison in central Ukraine, trying to recruit physically strong, healthy and motivated prisoners into his unit, the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade.
More than two years on from Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine is struggling to replenish its depleted military ranks. To address this, the government introduced a new law (https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/08/europe/ukraine-prisoners-parole-enlist-military-intl-latam/) last month permitting the recruitment of convicts. It allows individuals who meet certain conditions to be granted conditional early release if they sign a contract to serve in the military.
Kukharchuk doesn’t promise the prisoners much. “It won’t be easy. But when you come to us, you come to a family,” he tells the men, explaining that the brigade will not have any special “penal” units. Instead, he says, the recruited prisoners will be integrated into the existing battalions.
Some of the men listen attentively, others smirk.

LONDON, June 13 (Reuters) - Britain on Thursday imposed its first sanctions targeting vessels in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s "shadow fleet" that it said was used to circumvent Western sanctions on the trade in Russian oil.

The action, part of 50 new sanctions and co-ordinated with G7 partners, also targeted suppliers of munitions, machine tools, microelectronics, and logistics to Russia’s military, including entities based in China, Israel, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey, the government said.

"Today’s action includes the UK’s first sanctions targeting vessels in Putin’s shadow fleet, used by Russia to circumvent UK and G7 sanctions and continue unfettered trade in Russian oil," a government statement said.

Britain also sanctioned Russia's leading financial marketplace, the Moscow Exchange (MOEX.MM), opens new tab, saying it had obtained a benefit from or supported the Kremlin "by carrying on business in a sector of strategic significance."

When the military tells him in aint going well because... they are put on the back burner and then rotated in again when it inevitably goes bad again. Keeps everyone on their toes, loyalty wears thin. Dictators know this. Trump knows this. Except Trump cant rotate as easily because he cant control all the criminals he has hired going to jail. Ukraine is countering by hitting the military airports where the planes that carry the glide bombs are sent from. Its very difficult to get the planes in time. This is one of the reasons the Ukrainians want to use US made weapons because they are taking off from inside Russia and purposely with in range of Ukrainian cities like Kharkiv. If the planes are sent from great distance they get shot down. So used close to the action is critical. This is what I have gathered.
And yes Patriot systems are very expensive as they can stop the air attacks launched close to the action in a very small increment of time. Super fast air defense. If we let the Ukrainians hit the Russians across the border at their airbases we would push the airbases back and the Patriot system would not be as important. Time and distance are critical. Both countries use drones and they are very slow but you can send lots of them cheaply. Ukraine is way out in front in drone technology. Over 200 different companies producing them. I know people post a lot of blow up the tank vids, but the most important targets for Ukraine are the forward air defense and radar. The defense systems are ineffective without the radar. But apparently the radar are not as "fun" on video blowing up. If you hit the actually missiles then you get a fireworks display before all those multiple tubes are emptied. Radar, airports, fuel complexes, transportation hubs, naval stations are the most important targets for air and water strikes for Ukraine. The ground fighting gets very tough on Ukraine when they cant even get out of where they are dug in due to artillery. And if the Russians dont do effective artillery before attacking on the ground they are taking huge loses. So drones used on tanks and artillery are very important for ground combat.

My take after reading a lot of material on this. I want this to end.

Mediazona confirms identities of over 56,800 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine

Through open-source research, Mediazona, a Russian independent media outlet, together with BBC Russia, confirmed the names of 56,858 Russian soldiers who had been killed since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Priest and six law enforcement officers killed in attacks on synagogue and church in Russia’s Dagestan

Six law enforcement officers and a priest have reportedly been killed in what appear to be coordinated attacks by gunmen in Russia’s southernmost Dagestan province.

Attacks have been reported in a church and a synagogue in the city of Derbent and at a police traffic stop in the city of Makhachkala. Regional authorities say 12 law enforcement officers have also been wounded, though it is unclear in which city.

Two “militants” have also been killed following the attacks, RIA Novosti reported on Sunday, citing Dagestan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

A priest was killed in the attack on the church in Derbent, according to the Dagestan Public Monitoring Commission Chairman, Shamil Khadulaev.

“According to the information I received, Father Nikolay was killed in the church in Derbent, they slit his throat. He was 66-years-old and very ill,” Khadulaev said.

He also said a security guard at the church armed with only a pistol was shot. Additional priests have locked themselves in the church and are waiting for help, Khadulaev said.

Meanwhile, the synagogue is now on fire with large flames and plumes of smoke billowing heavily out of a series of windows on at least one floor of the structure.
