I don't think anybody "left" any party. There's about a solid 30% of the vote for each party, then there's people in the middle who decide elections. I'm perfectly happy with the fact that the democratic result was respected in both instances, tbh.

Russian food prices are soaring — but no one dares blame Putin and the war
A break-in at a small food store in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg wouldn’t usually make headlines around the world, but this time was different.
CCTV footage from the store, Dairy Place, in early November appears to show the door being smashed and one person rushing over to empty the cash register. The other person makes a beeline for the fridge, plundering 20 kilograms of butter from the chiller, Russian media reported.
The owner of the store said on Telegram that the heist showed butter was now like “gold,” according to a Google translation. CNBC could not independently verify the footage.
Dairy Place is not the only victim of butter thefts, with a recent spate of similar incidents prompting some stores to lock the product in containers. A standard 200g stick of butter now costs around 200 rubles, or almost $2, with prices up 30% since December 2023, according to data from state statistics service Rosstat.
The theft of such a basic product has drawn attention to rampant price rises in Russia.
“The cost of basic foods has been growing for the last three years. It is getting worse day by day and sped up, especially this year,” Stanislav, a Moscow resident, told CNBC.
...
https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/25/russias-inflation-is-so-bad-that-people-are-stealing-butter.html
Russia Faces a Wave of Bankruptcies as Borrowing Costs Skyrocket
Russian businesses are bracing themselves for a financial crunch that could put many of them out of business. The Central Bank's interest rate has reached a crushing 21%, with expectations for a further hike in December, and over the last two years, companies have built up significant commercial debt with floating-rate interest payments.
The Central Bank has progressively raised rates since the second quarter of 2023 in a bid to control persistent inflation and support the faltering ruble. However, the soaring cost of borrowing is now pushing many companies toward a dangerous debt spiral, with interest payments consuming one out of every four rubles they earn.
Late payments from customers and partners have been climbing, signaling distress in the corporate sector as firms struggle to service debt under such high rates. With real interest rates once bank premiums are factored in effectively reaching 25% for businesses, the likelihood of defaults and bankruptcies has risen sharply, Meduza reports.
Before the war, only around 20% of corporate loans were issued at floating rates. By mid-2023, however, that share had surged to 44%, as businesses took out loans with terms pegged to the Central Bank’s key rate. Many firms, driven by the need for capital to support import substitution after the imposition of sanctions and to acquire assets as foreign companies left Russia, borrowed heavily — and under the assumption that interest rates would eventually stabilize or decrease.
That didn’t happen. Heavy government spending overheated the economy and sent inflation soaring. The Central Bank began an aggressive rate-hike tightening cycle that has not ended yet.

Russian Central Bank Halts Currency Buying Until 2025 as Ruble Slides
Russia’s Central Bank said Wednesday it will suspend buying foreign currency on the domestic market for the rest of 2024 as the ruble continued sliding to its lowest levels since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
The decision to halt foreign currency purchases from Thursday until Dec. 31 seeks to “reduce volatility in the financial markets,” the Russian regulator said.
“The deferred purchases will be carried out during the course of 2025,” Russia’s Central Bank said in a statement.
The Bank previously suspended planned foreign currency purchases from Aug. 10, 2023, until Dec. 31, 2023, because they were adding extra pressure on the falling ruble at the time.
This year’s suspension comes as the ruble traded as low as 113 to the dollar for the first time since March 2022, according to Reuters. It was the Russian currency’s lowest level in more than 32 months.

The recent Ruble slide is more a sign of US Dollar strength than anything. The US dollar since the election of Trump has increased (probably irrationally) compared to most major currencies like the EURO as well.

Euro has been gaining on USD this week, not that there is much movement in USD/EUR exchange, and Ruble is nosediving against all currencies, even Argentine pesos and Turkish lira.

There were additional sanctions placed on Russia this week that pushed it even lower but I think we'll likely see a recovery from that soon.

Disagree. Their financial system has shown signs of stress, with buyers unwilling to buy government bond issues. Their placement rate for such bonds is running at less than 1% of their goals for the last few quarters. That means their government cannot borrow.
The only way for them to make their debt obligations, because they cannot issue new debt, is to print their way out of it.
Hence the recent bank run.
Their non-defense sector is dying and unable to keep up with goods and services their economy demands.
A recipe for hyperinflation.

Kyiv reveals total Ukraine casualties in Putin’s war for first time
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has lost 43,000 soldiers killed in action and 370,000 more were wounded, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday, in Kyiv's first disclosure of total casualty figures in the the nearly three-year conflict.
Zelenskyy announced the figures in a Telegram post on Sunday after United States President-elect Donald Trump said early Sunday that Ukraine had "ridiculously lost 400,000 soldiers" in the war started by Russian President Vladimir Putin almost three years ago.
In February, Zelenskyy said Kyiv had seen 31,000 troops killed in action in the conflict, but refused to give the number of wounded, saying he didn't want to give the Kremlin too much information. Since then, he has routinely described estimates published by various media outlets as overblown.

Someone Else’s Fault — Kremlin Propagandists Explain Syrian Collapse
Russia’s premier propagandists — tightly controlled, slavishly loyal, and richly rewarded media talking heads — roundly rejoiced Donald Trump won the US election. Things were going their way.
Their glee was only amplified by the arrival in December of the US TV celebrity Tucker Carlson to interview Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. On December 6, appearing on the state TV program Time Will Tell, State Duma member Andrey Isaev described the sit-down with Tucker as a useful opportunity for Lavrov to feed propaganda directly into American homes.
“Sergey Viktorovich [Lavrov] made a very important move. Here, he acted in the capacity of a man who is propagandizing to American audiences, explaining things to them,” Isaev said,
Their joy was short-lived. The sudden downfall of the murderous Assad regime in Syria, Russia’s primary Middle Eastern ally, shocked the Kremlin’s mouthpieces. Decorated propagandist Vladimir Solovyov was forced to admit on-air that Russia was unable to come to Assad’s defense because it is currently “busy” in Ukraine.

Romanian police intercept armed mercenaries linked to far-right politician, foil protest, intimidation of opponents
Romanian police on Sunday took mercenaries linked to far-right presidential candidate Calin Georgescu into questioning. Individuals were stopped as they were heading to the capital to stage protests and intimidate journalists and politicians after the presidential runoff were canceled, media reported.
Some 21 individuals were questioned included gang leader Horatiu Potra, who was part of the Foreign Legion, and his son. He was later detained for 24 hours. The individuals had lists of journalists, politicians who were critical of Georgescu who they were planning to target, police told Digi24.
“They wanted to intimidate” journalists and politicians, sources said.
Police said the group had booked hotel rooms in downtown Bucharest and were traveling to the capital from three different directions to avoid being detected by authorities who were already on to them.
Police officers were reportedly informed about the plan to intimidate unfriendly journalists and politicians and infiltrate protests and they stopped the individuals as they headed to the capital. They confiscated knives, axes, explosives and money.
They found a UMAREX HDR pistol, a tear gas canon, a firecracker type, an axe, eight knives and two knife blades, a stick and various European and African currencies on Potru,Adevarul reported.
Last week, investigative journalist Victor Ilie was threatened by a Georgescu supporter after he revealed that Russian money, paid for in seemingly benign advertisements, featuring homeopathic medicine and news about saints, which came to influence Romanians’ vote in recent presidential elections.

Covert Facebook Network Found to Be Targeting Romanian Voters
Meta Platforms Inc. allowed a network of Facebook pages to post more than 4,100 political ads attacking Romania’s pro-EU presidential candidate Elena Lasconi and promoting far-right figures, including Calin Georgescu, in the run-up to the country’s elections, a report showed.
The campaign was run across 25 seemingly separate Facebook pages for entities whose websites share hosting, advertising and email infrastructure, indicating an organized effort to influence the election, according to a report by the digital threat research groups Reset Tech and Check First. It’s not clear who was behind the network, which boosted political posts on Facebook and Instagram with advertising spending of as much as €264,909 ($279,610), according to the report.
The shock victory of the pro-Russia, TikTok-loving Georgescu in Romania’s now-abandoned Nov. 24 presidential election has put the role of social media companies under intense scrutiny. Romanian authorities have focused on ByteDance Ltd.’s TikTok, accusing the platform of providing “massive exposure and preferential treatment” to the previously little-known nationalist candidate. But the report by Reset Tech and Check First indicates a wider effort to influence the outcome of the election.
Romania’s top court on Dec. 6 annulled last month’s first-round vote over allegations of meddling by Russia, the first such ruling in the nation’s history. It followed the release of declassified documents by the country’s intelligence service showing how Georgescu’s TikTok-fueled campaign may have been coordinated by foreign “state actors.” One document said that Romania was a target for “aggressive Russian hybrid attacks.” Moscow has denied any interference.
“While TikTok’s role in amplifying disinformation during the Romanian election campaign has been in the spotlight, new evidence shows that Meta platforms Facebook and Instagram were leveraged to spread aggressive political messaging, unverified claims, and polarizing narratives,” wrote the authors of the report.

US gives $20bn to Ukraine funded by seized Russian assets
The US has given $20bn (£15bn) to Ukraine, funded by the profits of seized Russian assets.
The economic support forms a significant part of a $50bn (£39bn) package agreed by G7 member nations announced in June.
Funding the aid through frozen assets means Russia has to "bear the costs of its illegal war, instead of taxpayers," US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said.
It comes a matter of weeks before US President Joe Biden is replaced by Donald Trump, who has said he wants to end the war in Ukraine quickly upon taking office.
The president-elect has characterised financial support to Kyiv as a drain on US resources, casting doubt on whether aid will continue under the new administration.
The US Treasury said on Tuesday that it had transferred the $20bn to a World Bank fund, where it will be available for Ukraine to draw from.
Money handled by the World Bank cannot be used for military purposes.

43K isn't even remotely plausible for a war of this scope and scale
The rule of thumb for offensive operations is that you take 3x the losses of the defender.
Russia's meat wave tactics have made that ratio vastly worse for the offender. Russia has been offense for most of the war, and UKR does casevac vastly better than RUS, especially because they are the defender, with shorter lines of communication.
It is more than remotely plausible given the scale and scope of the war.

Oil tanker 'literally breaks in half' in horror sinking as helicopter scrambled to save crew
A Russian oil tanker is "rapidly sinking" with 13 crewmen finding themselves overboard, according to reports.
The tanker Volgoneft-212 is understood to have broke in half amid large waves close to the shores of Kerch, off the coast of occupied Crimea. According to Russian outlet Mash, the ship rapidly started to sink.
It added the vessel was transporting 4,000 tonnes of fuel oil. A rescue operation is currently underway in the area.
A tugboat has since arrived at the site of the sinking and rescuers were reportedly attempting to lift crewmen aboard. A helicopter from the Russian Emergencies Ministry flew to help the crew in the Kerch Straight this morning.

Ukraine charges Russian general over use of banned chemical weapons
Ukrainian prosecutors charged Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the head of the Russian Armed Forces' radiation, chemical, and biological defense troops, in absentia with the use of banned chemical weapons in Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said on Dec. 16.
According to the SBU's investigation, chemical weapons have been used in more than 4,800 cases since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
Since 2022, over 2,000 Ukrainian service members have been hospitalized with chemical poisoning, and three have died, Ukrainian Colonel Artem Vlasiuk said earlier this week.
"Russian forces mostly use ammunition with toxic substances by dropping them from FPV (first-person-view) drones on Ukrainian positions. When chemical grenades are detonated, their poisonous compounds affect human mucous membranes, especially the eyes and respiratory tract," the SBU’s statement said.
When detonated, the irritating gases force Ukrainian soldiers finding cover in the trenches to leave and expose themselves to Russian gunfire, the statement noted.
Ukraine handed over soil samples that prove the use of banned materials to independent laboratories of the International Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons for examination and were confirmed to breach international humanitarian law.

Russian general charged with chemical weapons crimes reported dead in Moscow explosion
Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the head of the Russian Armed Forces' radiation, chemical, and biological defense troops, was reportedly killed in an explosion at a residence in Moscow on the morning of Dec. 17, according to Russian media.
Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) on Dec. 16 sentenced Kirillov in absentia for the use of banned chemical weapons in Ukraine.
Kirillov and another Russian servicemember, reported to be his personal assistant, were killed in an explosion near the entrance to a residential building in Moscow in the early hours of Dec. 17, according to the Russian Telegram news channel Astra.
Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case on the incident. The committee reported that the explosion was caused by a device planted on a scooter near the entrance to the building.

Base Development in Mali Indicates Continued Russian Involvement
...
The strategic significance of the battle remains unclear: nothing suggests that Russia intends to reduce its involvement in Mali. But Malians’ hopes that the 2020 coup and ensuing shift towards Russia as Bamako’s main military partner would improve the security situation in the country have been undermined by the attacks in northern Mali and Bamako. But the July ambush was not the last highly lethal attack against Russian forces in Mali, suggesting that it may have been an outlier in size but was not an isolated incident. If Russian casualties continue to mount amid a worsening security situation, popular narratives about Wagner’s military prowess could erode, making Russia’s military presence in the country more tenuous. Confidence in Russian support may also decrease following the collapse of the Moscow-backed Assad government in Syria, pushing Mali’s leaders to at least consider alternative security partners. For now, though, it appears that Russia is in Bamako to stay.

The Price of Russian Victory
Why Letting Putin Win Would Cost America More Than Supporting Ukraine
Elaine McCusker
Many Americans are concerned about the cost of aid to Ukraine. It took the U.S. Congress seven months to approve the last funding measure to provide aid. A November Pew poll indicates that most Americans support helping Ukraine, yet roughly a quarter believe that Washington has been providing too much assistance. Elected officials, including the Vice President-elect JD Vance, continue making misleading comments about being “half a trillion dollars in the hole for the Ukraine conflict.” The billionaire Elon Musk, who is helping the incoming Trump administration sort out plans to cut federal spending, posted on social media last February that it was “insane” for the United States to continue its investment in Ukraine.
Such worries are understandable. The United States is faced with numerous challenges. Illegal immigration, financing the national debt, competition with China, war in the Middle East, and a generally unpredictable global security environment all compete for attention and resources. It is not surprising that it is difficult for Washington to sort out its priorities.
But Americans worried only about the cost of helping Ukraine are thinking about the issue in the wrong way. They should be worried about the cost of not helping Ukraine. Right now, by providing aid to Kyiv, the United States is preventing Russia from directly menacing eastern and central Europe, which would doubtless consume even more U.S. resources. Washington may, in fact, be deterring a direct war between NATO and Moscow, one in which U.S. forces would have to fight.

Putin is not going on a suicide mission by choosing to engage in a major conflict with NATO.
Hitler wouldn't make a suicide decision of declaring war on USA while already fighting UK on sea and USSR on land. The imperial Japan wouldn't make a suicide by bombing a naval base of much stronger opponent. Saddam wouldn't be an idiot an invade Kuwait. Putin wouldn't make a mistake of attacking Ukraine. That's the thing with dictators - when they make a dumb decision, there is no one around to tell they are being an idiot.
And it's not like it's dumb from his perspective. Ending the war is already not an option for Russia. As soon as the war ends, their economy implodes. So if fighting in Ukraine stops, another war will have to get started. And why not start a war with say Estonia or Romania? With the NATO already throwing everything at them in Ukraine and failing to stop them, the USA already ready to bend the knee over the cost of some old equipment and zero US deaths? Will the guy who wants to leave NATO really commit USA troops to die in Estonia? It's not like USA is obliged by NATO treaty to go to war, they just have to "take the actions it deems necessary to assist".
You yourself already hedged it with "major" conflict. Is Russia's war with Estonia a major conflict? Russia is already destroying NATO infrastructure and sabotaging in NATO territory, and the USA and NATO aren't responding militarily. Right now the rational assumption is that USA won't commit to a potentially nuclear war and honor their treaties. I have more faith in EU article 42 than in NATO article 5, which currently look closer to value of Budapest memorandum.

No. No US troops. No Article V guarantees. No fighting to kick Russia out of all of Ukraine. Not a NATO country.
So just let Russia attack again.:lol

A single PAC-3 PATRIOT missile cost about $4 million. How many Americans could you feed for the cost of a single PATRIOT missile?
We’re not going to stop making PATRIOT missiles, so that’s a moot point. Once Congress appropriated the money it’s going to be spent. Now if you tell me the US spends way too much on defense, I agree and I said as much.
Weren't you just complaining about Argentina's defense spending? Argentina is spending around $2 or $3 billion on defense. We're spending about $900 billion.
I was pointing out you’re comparing apples to oranges. Argentina is not a military technological leader, and the US doesn’t have half its population under the line of poverty. If it did, and we still spend that much in defense, then we certainly would have a problem.
So just let Russia attack again.:lol
I hate to break it to you but what I'm describing is seriously being discussed in Europe. You're clueless as usual. :lol

No, the point is that we're sending them to Ukraine entirely at our expense... an expense that could better be spent here. We have to buy many more as a result of giving them away.

We have a problem now. $1 Trillion on Interest Expense and $900 Billion on military. If you don't see a problem then you'll have to find out the long and hard way if we don't fix it.
