If he has a player option on that second year, then I'd say it's likely that they're planning on giving him the full amount. If it's not an option, I think it's more ambiguous, because Manu would not be able to renegotiate his salary if he wants to come back for another year in 2018. I've been thinking since I heard about the deal this was just a way to pay him 5 million and stretch it out for two years for cap space reasons. Wouldn't that just be a fully guaranteed two year deal and then the team can waive him so he still gets paid. Seems like a player option would require him to play to get all the contract money. If that's the lineup, it makes sense.

Prime Manu and Kawhi need the ball, Dave and Tim need 3-point shooting. Both Manu and Kawhi can stretch the floor for Dave and Tim when needed, Bowen would live in the corner.

Tony is obviously the better player, but it's better floor balance with that group - not to mention defense.

Replacing Manu with Tony makes more sense to me. That's why Manu was one of the best 6th Man of all-time.

I had my Leonard shirt on underneath and thought about trollimg him when I walked up lol.

In the 2015 playoffs Marco won me over. He played his ass off and did as much as he could to try and get us over the hump against the Clippers. He showed no fear in that series and shot the ball with total confidence. I didn't want him to leave after that, but unfortunately he got a bigger offer. I really would like him back now.

Realistically his body is still maturing and I don't expect a great change or anything but 10 pounds or so is something. I am hoping it helps with his finishes and defense.

Simmons is a bad comparison bc he played all season with a set role and is a freak athlete, but he also was a lot more aggressive when he was given some ballhandling. Standing in a corner if shooting is not your thing, more like a complimentary thing to your game will take guys out of their games. Simmons himself was very bad for most of the season with a few exceptions and was starting to lose his spot in the rotation. Some guys do need to be more involved than just spotting up in order to have a rhythm. He's not going to be allowed to play like that when getting him going is not a priority for the team. Mills, Manu and Pau will still get the lionshare of shots and if Bertans is in the bench, his game IS spotting up so he will also get shots. Rudy Gay is a known bucket getter etc.

I think he showed in the playoffs he can do a lot more than spot up and will be aggressive if the other options are shitting their pants like they did.

IMO he might be better off elsewhere with more freedom to play his game. Very likely one of the main reasons for Simmons wanting to hitch a ride somewhere else was that he felt restricted. Regardless of all his critics he played better with more of a green light and Kyle did too.

I am skeptical if Pop giving him that light. I expect him back in a corner and elsewhere. He's in a contract year and finished the season playing well both in the RS and playoffs. At least individually there's more to him than meets the eye and we aren't going to see it often unless the shit hits the fan and there are more injuries than the projected ones or someone falls off a cliff. I am not wishing for any of those things so I expect him in a restricted small role again.

I predict he'll be gone like J.Simms next off-season, so trading him for a small asset might be a good idea. The pelicans are desperate with their need for wings and don't have much of a budget. He'll be gone for nothing like CoJo.

I think we will still get about the same production from Pau...hopefully having a year in the system will offset any aging declines. That would also open up spot minutes for Bertans.

Even ignoring Pop's traditional preference, as well as Aldridge's, Gasol makes too much and is still too good to just backup Aldridge. Whether he primarily starts or not, he's going to get similar minutes to last season.

The Warriors have had 11 Lottery picks from 2001 to 2012. They also parlayed a sudden spike in salary cap and a desirable location to add KD to this. Add in an owner willing AND capable of going way over the luxury cap...
All things considered the Spurs did OK in the off season. I'm not a fan of Pau contract- however they'll enter next season with more cap space and several expiring or near expiring large contracts.

This is a good post. It's up to him to maximize whatever chances he will get, contract season and all. I am still uncertain that he'll be reupped but at this point the roster is pretty much set. Any of the forwards/bigs lost at this point creates a minutes gap that needs to be replaced. :tu The trade opportunity I suggest is gone and might not have been of interest to the Spurs anyways. The FA market is going to be tough next season so it's unknown really.

Our best players other than Kawhi are too old and will be gassed by the playoffs (looking at you Pau), no depth, no consistent playmakers, poor big rotation, poor inside defense, no legitimate scoring options after Kawhi (unless LMA:lol grows balls and/or Gay surprises), declining one-dimensional shooters (Mills and D-League Green), too many young and inexperienced players backing up the old men, etc...Just a poorly constructed team, tbh.

But at least we can look forward to Kawhi winning MVP carrying these scrubs. I guess that's something?

Iguodala didn't have many questions during the meeting, which lasted an hour. Players around the league are already well-versed in Spurs culture. Iguodala saw it firsthand when the Warriors won Game 4 of the 2017 Western Conference finals at the AT&T Center and Buford camped near the tunnel that led to the Warriors' locker room to congratulate and shake hands with the players and coaching staff. That left a lasting impression on the Warriors' glue guy.
