Likely. As I've said all along, I think taking your time is prudent unless something that'll blows their mind comes along. Try to salvage the relationship, and at the same time let the Lakers use up their cap space eliminating that a FA destination for KL next year. Spurs leverage grows until Oct 16 at least.

What is so frustrating is this a guy the Spurs identified in the draft. Who's radar was he really on other than the Spurs? Leonard is not someone anyone thought projected to be some future franchise player in the NBA. The Spurs have put in years, molding, mentoring and developing him. I go back to Pop pushing him to be more aggressive in the 2014 finals, and Leonard telling him "Thanks for pushing me" as they hugged during the celebration. Duncan mentoring this guy his last few years with the team, letting him know, "This is going to be your team". The whole coaching staff putting so much time in with him. And now in the prime of his career age 27 when it can all really pay off, everything goes south and he wants out of here. So someone else could possibly benefit from all the hard work the Spurs put in with this player. Makes me sick..

Not to mention when he got "zaza-ed", Pop took the long view and didn't push him back in on a bad ankle later in the series. (Reports are he could have played in Game 3 or Game 4 if needed.) Purely speculation, but he probably wanted to sign a super-max with a no-trade clause. That way, he gets his money. He then sits and forces a trade to the Lakers, still has his money, and his new team doesn't have to give up anything.

Spurs probably indicated that they didn't want to pay supermax, especially with a no-trade clause. So Kawhi knows he's going to go to the lakers, but he wants them to have as much talent as possible once he gets there. So now he lets it be known that he'll only sign with the Lakers. If it's true that he'll tell teams he won't re-sign with them and it's Lakers only, that fucks the Spurs over immensely. Wouldn't that mean the Lakers can lower their offer and not even give us their best offer.

one trade that could save some value could be the following.
Kawhi to cleveland
Love to Clippers
Gallo to spurs along with n 8, 12, 13.
That would be highly beneficial for all teams involved.
Cleveland get a one year rental of Kawhi and with him finally a real chance to compete against the warriors next year...and all that in change for a piece that don't work too well with LBJ and a draft pick..and the chance that, after this year is not excluded, Kawhi changes his mind when he could realize he's back to a title winning environment.
Clippers get rid of a player that's been paid a lot for being all year in injury list and that could have the same problems for the next two years still taking off of them a lot of cap space; istead of him they take a L.A. guy who should fit very well in their team on offense thanks to his outside shooting and on defense thanks to daj protecion of the ring. And all that at the price of 12 and 13.
Spurs do that just in the wiew of a full rebuild...they lose a top three guy for a guy that will take for two years the same money...but has no actual value 'cause of his repeated injuries (that could last for all the next two years)...but at least they get a chance to retool the roster with decent draft choices 8, 12 and 13

It doesn't help at all that's for sure, but there's always going to be clubs that feel they can "convince" him ala OKC and George.
