Quite disappointed the Spurs didn’t get Anunoby because there’s a gaping hole at small forward. Not losing sight however of the fact the Spurs managed to get an All-Star for someone who barely played and has tendinopathy. IMO the way the Spurs played and managed minutes made Leonard a great fit here since he can rest his quad but a degenerative injury seems like a deal-breaker for most teams. Though there’s a bit of schadenfreude the Lakers didn’t get him they also somehow won by not getting him. Leonard is going to take summers off constantly rehabbing that quad and may not even be able to play at a high level constantly, unless of course he too was faking the degenerative nature of the injury.

DeRozan’s depression will be an issue but he didn’t miss any games over it and was durable for the most part last year. I’m a bit excited he gets a coach like Pop and it’s intriguing to see what Pop wants to do with him. We’re all hoping for the beautiful game but we all know it’s going to be deliciously awful iso ball.

Nobody has had to deal with this type of nonsense and no one had their star player basically quit on the team for an entire year. Do you really think if he played in a bigger market, he wouldn't have been eviscerated by the local media and fans, especially when you have a contending team. The Spurs protected Kawhi as best they could even though they were frustrated by the situation.

Losing a franchise player sucks for sure but based on everything that has happened, Kawhi and his uncle decided prior to this year that they wanted out of SA, period. That is the only narrative that makes sense to this ridiculous story that we as fans had to endure for a year. I suspect there is a lot of truth in this statement. I'm trying to remember who it was, but someone put together a list of instances where the Spurs have always tried to help or accommodate players who wanted to leave. While the Spurs have admitted not handling this the best they could have- there was never any clear reason why Kawhi couldn't play last year. I got the impression the Spurs where being very generous in their comments or lack of comments until late in the season when frustration hit a maximum.
