Are you honestly telling me you believe it's over there? I mean I would love to be wrong, the virus burns out worldwide thanks to quarantines and maybe only a few thousand die in the US while Trump takes victory laps to a landslide win in November. But the South Korean mortality rate and the transmission rate of 2.5 new infections expectation for each early infection probably doesn't jive with that. Gotta think it's right back to exponential growth once people get out of their houses and back to work there.
I get it, but we won't know the tally until we know. Seems spectacularly high to me.

Criticism is fair, but we are all taking pretty drastic actions now. One of the travelers who came in before the travel ban infected the Seattle area.
If we're to recognize there were missteps before, then you would think there would be some urgency to make things right now.
But we're still short on testing, we don't actually have solid figures of what's the situation in the country, we still have a moron giving speeches instead of shutting the hell up and letting doctors give useful information.
We can't go back and fix shit that's long past, that's a fuckup that's done. But there's no excuses to drop a 1.5 Trillion loan to bail Wall Street, while we have people bickering about whether there should be free testing or treatments.

You develop some resistance, but there's also new mutations and strains over time. That's why people get the flu over and over. We're fine 99.9 percent of the time, but if you start having other risk factors (age, etc), it can turn in pneumonia and be fatal.

Like Andrew Yang said, fucking $1.5 trillion could have been a subsistence level $1000 a month ubi for the entire nation for 4.5 months to help offset the needs to quarantine and the enormous economic consequences this pandemic will cause.
4.5 month * [$1*10^3/(person*month)] * (327.2 * 10^6 person) = $1472.4 * 10^9 = $1.472 * 10^12 = $1.47 trillion

But are you back to square one with mutations of the strains? If so you would have thought H1N1 would have killed off the entire population 100 years ago since we didn't start seeing flu vaccines until the 1930s.

I'm very confused then. I don't mean stop transmission so that the virus is completely gone, everyone at this point seems to be expecting this to be a virus here to stay. But are you saying we're likely stuck in full pandemic for a year and a half, two years, five years, however long it takes to make a vaccine? That you don't get enough immunity to hugely slow it down once it has infected 40% to 70% percent of the population?

I think it will be similar to the flu yearly. We’ll see a different strain like we do with the flu or regular cold virus. Now maybe the effects won’t be as bad since we potentially will have some immunity from a previous infection, but also hopefully a vaccine as well.

Um you completely took what I said out of context. You’re an idiot anyway so no reason to respond, but I’ll have to educate you. Unlike this virus, we have readily testing for the flu, vaccines, and anti-virals to treat it. We have none of the above for this virus. That’s a big reason why the mortality rate is higher. My point was this virus will be around yearly, but in different strains like the flu and different cold viruses. Go back to your parents basement copying and pasting data from random websites and go fuck your mother too.

Data caps a thing of the past?
ISPs, leery of repeating Verizon’s memorable gaffe of cutting off service during an emergency, are proposing a variety of user-friendly changes to their policies. Comcast is boosting the bandwidth of its low-income Internet Essentials customers to levels that actually qualify as broadband under FCC rules. AT&T is suspending data caps for all its customers until further notice. Verizon has added $500 million to its 5G rollout plans. Wait, how does that help? Unclear, but the company “stands ready” for increases in traffic. (Disclosure: Verizon Media owns TechCrunch, but this does not affect our editorial coverage.)
Elsewhere in the world ISPs are taking similar actions, either voluntarily or at the request of the state. In India, for instance, ACT Fibernet has bumped everyone up to 300 Mbps for no cost.
There are two simple truths at play here.
The first is that any company that sends its subscriber a $150 overage fee because they had to work from home for a month and ran over their data cap is going to be radioactive. The optics on that are so bad that my guess is most companies are quietly setting forgiveness policies in place to prevent it from happening — though of course it probably will anyway.
The second is that these caps are completely unnecessary, existing only as a way to squeeze more money from subscribers. Data caps just don’t matter any more. As I pointed out during the whole zero-rating debacle, the very fact that the limits can be lifted at will or certain high-traffic categories (such as a broadband company’s own streaming TV channels) can be exempted fundamentally beggars the concept of these caps.
Think about it: If the internet provider can even temporarily lift the data caps, then there is definitively enough capacity for the network to be used without those caps. If there’s enough capacity, then why did the caps exist in the first place?
Answer: Because they make money.
As with other nonsensical and aggravating fees and practices, ISPs get away with this because they amount to regional monopolies or duopolies and are all running the same basic set of grifts for extra cash on top of your subscription feehttps://techcrunch.com/2020/03/12/coronavirus-could-force-isps-to-abandon-data-caps-forever/

Currently spending time with my boomer dad, as he was just hospitalized and incapacitated. Nothing permanent, just a bad reaction to anesthetic for a minor procedure, but as the Responsible Sibling with A Good Job, I am the one with the power of attorney, and had to be present.
Visited the hospital a lot and noted that people no longer touch the elevator buttons with their fingers. I travel for a living so have been washing my hands A LOT.
The fucked up part of this is that part of the population that most follows Trump will poo-poo all of this, even now, and will not take any precautions. Hell, had a friend of mine report that her mail carrier deliberately breathed all over her mail before handing it to her.
The fuckwit Trump cultists will literally kill people with their delusions.
This is the crisis I was hoping we would avoid while the incompetent, corrupt, lying sack of shit Trump and his toady sycophants were in power. They are uniquely ill-suited to handle this, and are actively making it worse. The only good thing that will come out of this, is that some of the Fox propaganda network morons will be shaken out of their torpor to finally see the emperor has no clothes.

Trump rages at Obama :lol :lol
in early morning coronavirus rant
blaming former President Barack Obama and the Centers for Disease Control for his own problems.
accused Obama of bungling the response to the H1N1 swine flu epidemic in 2009, :lol evidence?
complained the former president had made changes to the CDC :lol evidence?
that hampered his own response to the coronavirus outbreak. :lol evidence?
“For decades the @CDCgov looked at, and studied, its testing system, but did nothing about it,” Trump tweeted.
“It would always be inadequate and slow for a large scale pandemic,
but a pandemic would never happen, they hoped.
President Obama made changes that only complicated things further.” :lol evidence?

Trump’s virus blame-shifting gets massive fact check:
‘You cannot control your jealousy of Obama’
tried to blame former President Barack Obama for his own failures in responding to the coronavirus outbreak —
and his claims were quickly fact-checked.
First all of this is a lie.
Second, you’ve been president for 3 years - why didn’t you fix this if it’s true? Oh it’s because it’s a lie.
Third, under the Obama admin, there were a million tests available within weeks for H1N1. You should have learned from him.

A reason, but not the primary reason, or even a big one, to what I have read.
The pathology is different, as it attacks the respiratory system directly. Lack of testing and vaccines have more of an effect at slowing transmission.

Coronavirus: Italian doctor reveals horror with hospitals overwhelmed – ‘War has exploded’
https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1253336/coronavirus-italy-hospital-intensive-care-units-death-rate-doctors-covid-19
Italy which is a few weeks ahead of us on that curve is now overwhelmed. Their doctors are literally having to choose who to treat and who not to, because they cannot treat everybody. They have roughly the same rate as the US (77% occupancy on roughly the same beds per capita total. by latest stats-2013)
The US, as it is much larger geographically, will have a harder time managing that capacity. A bed in Oregon, will do no good to someone in Louisiana. Our slack is going to be even worse than it seems due to this factor.
Because of the fatal delay by the Trump administration to implement widespread testing that, even now, isn't wide enough to detect cases, that spread has been fast, and is still almost certainly ongoing.
We are on the same curve as italy, and for that matter Iran, whose mass graves can be seen from space.

I am happy to accede that out of the box, unconventional solutions can come from unusual sources. But I would not spend limited resources in the middle of a crisis trying to fish a gold nugget out of a sea of turds in a massive facebook group.
You have a limited number of experts and "expert labor hours", and putting them in charge of sifting through those turds is a bad use of their time. A failed real-estate developer like Kushner whose only success is having Trumps favorite hot daughter allow him to put his penis in her, does not offer any chance that he will find that nugget, if it exists.
The problem that Nathan89 is missing (or deliberately ignoring) is one of "noise". Any good suggestion, even if it exists, will require someone to figure out its worth, when compared to the "lets all have magic crystals to shield us" turds.

White House Knew Coronavirus Would Be A 'Major Threat' — But Response Fell Short
https://www.npr.org/2020/03/12/814881355/white-house-knew-coronavirus-would-be-a-major-threat-but-response-fell-short
This guy, who covers this for a living, puts it in stark, terms. Fresh Air (NPR show) is, for my money, far and away one of the best programs for diving in-depth on just about anything. Normally even I find it mind-numbing, but when it counts, you can learn a lot.
The slowness of the testing is making response almost impossible RIGHT NOW. That will kill people that would not have otherwise died, especially if, as I believe to be the case, our health system gets overwhelmed.
The testing delay, and its causes are telling.
They dithered. The people who would have recognized the need were fired in 2018. The reasons why they dithered... we will find out eventually. For some as yet inexplicable reason they chose not to use the WHO test, or whatever the South Koreans chose. They wanted one developed in the US.
There is some indication here that the Trump administration hindered the response on testing because it didn't want the bad press that higher numbers would cause. If that is the case, then the Trump cultists will have to face the fact that Trump's narcissism and known flaws quite possibly killed one of their relatives.
Here Trumps sycophantic, inept management style comes into play:
But at the same time, Secretary Azar has not always given the president the worst-case scenario of what could happen. My understanding is he did not push to do aggressive additional testing in recent weeks, and that's partly because more testing might have led to more cases being discovered of coronavirus outbreak, and the president had made clear - the lower the numbers on coronavirus, the better for the president, the better for his potential reelection this fall.
Meanwhile, Seema Verma, since being added to the team, has announced all kinds of actions that could be seen as cracking down on the problem - dispatching a team of investigators to Washington state, where there has been a major outbreak of corona virus, predominantly in local nursing homes. But I've talked to officials who say that Seema Verma, in an effort to show that she's cracking down, may actually be creating more problems by having her investigators demanding paperwork, demanding answers at a moment when these nursing home officials are just trying to provide basic patient care to people who have been infected by coronavirus.
Truth to power is important at this time. That is not happening, because he surrounds himself with yes-men/women
This will be a case-study in how poor management like this causes bad outcomes.

White House Knew [in January] Coronavirus Would Be A 'Major Threat'
https://www.npr.org/2020/03/12/814881355/white-house-knew-coronavirus-would-be-a-major-threat-but-response-fell-short
DIAMOND: I think they are both trying to show that they're incredibly active and aggressive in public, but some of the decisions behind the scenes haven't always reflected the best judgment of career professionals. In the case of Alex Azar, he did go to the president in January. He did push past resistance from the president's political aides to warn the president the new coronavirus could be a major problem. There were aides around Trump - Kellyanne Conway had some skepticism at times that this was something that needed to be a presidential priority.
DIAMOND: About two weeks ago, my colleague Nancy Cook and I reported that the White House had soured on Alex Azar leading the coronavirus response. He was asked about it in congressional testimony because we broke the story while he was on Capitol Hill, waved it away by saying, you know, didn't trust anonymous sources in Politico. But by the end of the day, Mike Pence had replaced him. And by the next morning, there was a new coordinator brought in, Debbie Birx, to help run the response, too. That's what people saw in public.
Behind the scenes, Azar and his team did know that he was at risk of being replaced, spent a fair amount of time just trying to shore up his standing, calling officials at the White House, on Capitol Hill, just trying to make sure that he didn't lose the job of running the coronavirus response. At that point, we were several weeks into fighting this thing. And in a working, functional administration, the amount of effort just to keep a job, just to fend off these internal fights, I don't know if that would be happening. Since Day 1, there were people trying to get him replaced as the leader of this effort. And Alex Azar also had to spend a lot of political capital fighting to keep this job at a time when we probably would want his efforts focused elsewhere.
GROSS: Like on fighting the virus, not on fighting for his job...
DIAMOND: Yes, on fighting the threat to the American people, not fighting who has which title.
You think you are pointing out how effective Trump is being now.
What you have actually done is pointed out how effective they should have already been, had it not been for Trumps autocratic management style. The buck stops... well he will blame anyone else. China, Democrats, and whatever official he chooses to throw under the bus to save himself this week.

Paid sick leave didn't slow anything in Italy. Their ho[s]pitals got flooded and they needed more drastic measures.
They didn't do anything to contain the spread until it was too late. Paid leave couldn't do anything in that case.
It could in the US, were it more widespread. Socialism FTW. Suck it.

Your question is irrelevant to the reason people are living their lives normally.
A reason, but not the primary reason, or even a big one, to what I have read.
The pathology is different, as it attacks the respiratory system directly. Lack of testing and vaccines have more of an effect at slowing transmission.
Been in hospital with elderly father for the last few days, so if this hasn't been posted it should be:
https://www.soundhealthandlastingwealth.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/flatten-the-curve-how-one-chart-became-a-rallying-cry-against-coronavirus.jpg
NUMBER OF ALL HOSPITALS IN THE U.S. IN 2017
6,210
NUMBER OF ALL HOSPITAL BEDS IN THE U.S. IN 2014
909.2k
OCCUPANCY RATE OF NONFEDERAL HOSPITALS IN THE U.S. IN 2015
65.5%
https://www.statista.com/topics/1074/hospitals/
Setting aside the likelihood of the number of beds being less due to rural hospital implosion in the last few years:
1-.655=.345
.345*909,200= 313,775 beds available TOTAL in the USA. That is it. Less than one tenth of one percent of the population in the US.
https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1253336/coronavirus-italy-hospital-intensive-care-units-death-rate-doctors-covid-19
We are on the same curve as italy, and for that matter Iran, whose mass graves can be seen from space.
https://internewscast.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/coronavirus-iran-victims-mass-graves-can-be-seen-from-space.jpg
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8105543/Iran-digs-mass-graves-coronavirus-victims.html
... and Trumps response:
Put his real-estate developer son-in-law, who failed at everything else, up to, and including middle-east peace, in charge.
His disastrous visit to the CDC where he did worse than throw paper towels, and his pathetic, incomplete, confusing, and moronic speech the other day have been judged by the markets, which tanked after he failed to be either truthful or decisive/effective.
He is going to, again, give a speech today. Based on his pattern, it will also be neither truthful, nor effective. Trump has finally met a crisis he cannot lie his way out of, and it shows.
Flatten the curve you stupid motherfucker.

Not really bats, but their waste.
Bats like caves... so do other critters. It is bushmeat in general that causes the interspecies transmission.
The wet markets make it worse. They stack multiple species in open cages one on top of the other in layers. Species A on top.. shits on Species B, who gets it in their system and shits on species C at the bottom. Couldn't make it jump species any better if you were doing it on purpose.

GOP lawmakers blasted for hiding out while Trump bungles coronavirus response
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had planned to take a recess of a week or more until some of his GOP senators realized how bad they would look,
so he instead called for a recess stretching from Thursday afternoon until Monday afternoon without a legislative response to the public health emergency,
“Donald Trump, to his credit, wants a bill,” wrote Bloomberg columnist Jonathan Bernstein.
“Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats want a bill containing a number of items.
Trump wants a payroll tax cut.
McConnell wants … well, apparently he wants to go home for the weekend.”
McConnell doesn’t like the House proposal or the president’s proposal, but he doesn’t have one of his own.
a compromise bill supported by both of them would easily pass both chambers by veto-proof margins,
it’s the kind of action that would put him in line for criticism from Trump —
perhaps right away for supposedly failing to make a good deal,
or perhaps later on if things go badly.”

59 million people affected. 12K deaths.
What are we at, 150 some odd cases and 11 deaths?
Ding. Here is that idiot. Color me shocked.
or depending on what CC was going for on Jan 31:
To put this in context, 80,000 people in the US died from the Flu in 2018 according to AP.
60% contract virus, middle of WHO estimates, 310M*.6 = 180M
2% death rate 180,000,000 * .02 = 3,600,000
https://internewscast.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/coronavirus-iran-victims-mass-graves-can-be-seen-from-space.jpg
Forty-five times more deadly.
Since we are all about perspective.
My guess is that the rate will fall a bit as we get better data and widespread testing, due to a lot of "have it but no symptoms" people never getting tested. Even so, we are in for many many more deaths than Trump party idiots will want to admit.

Why Trump-Friendly Christian Leaders Are Feeling Totally Fine About the Coronavirus
Countdown to the Apocalypse: Why ISIS and Ebola Are Only the Beginning, Robert Jeffress described a world on the brink of chaos.

“The Lord showed me the end of the Coronavirus,” Shawn Bolz, a prominent self-declared prophet in Los Angeles, announced (https://www.facebook.com/ShawnBolz/posts/10163544765850657) last week. “The tide is turning now!”
the United States would be minimally affected because “Trump honors Israel.”
several participants at a Florida gathering received messages from God that suggested he would “mitigate” the outbreak.
many charismatic leaders who participated in a “global conference call (https://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/world/2020/march/christians-call-for-global-day-of-prayer-to-end-coronavirus)” of prayers to stop the coronavirus
God will spare the United States the worst of the virus’s impact because of the
Trump administration’s policies on Israel and abortion, among other policies.
. “But where the administration is saying, ‘We’ve got it under control, there’s nothing to be afraid of,’ they’ll fall in line with that.”
Even, it seems, when a global pandemic is involved.

And like Dale said, as long as them and you are playing politics it can't be that serious. When it gets serious you'll drop all the political bullshit.Do you think Trump has handled this situation well?

Why weren't we using WHO tests deployed free of charge a month and a half ago? Instead it's a Democratic hoax and only 25 cases and all other kinds of horseshit from the Dear Leader.

"Both-sides"ing a discussion over whether the current elected officials are handling a crisis well.
So now we can't discuss current protocols because there's an election in November?
We all know you're voting Trump. There's no point in sales pitches. I'll settle for ridicule towards people who can see what is going on and still think, "Here's a leader I'm proud of."

i care less about those gaffes. care more about a guy who has slashed CDC funding and disbanded the pandemic response team to pay for tax cuts for the rich. care more about a guy who wasn't taking this virus seriously until just recently, having called it a hoax, pretending it's just going to go away, claiming that in a matter of days it will be down to 5 or less cases (with no basis in fact), and delayed what should have been a much quicker response

Emergency = tax dollars.
Fed liquidity = private money from the Federal reserve into liquidity (inter-bank lending) markets, although technically they putting up fiat money if memory serves. pledging assets on the books. Will spend some time looking at the mechanics now that I try and explain it, I realize my understanding is not as solid as I usually prefer.

We have a test... but not enough capacity. They are trying to lie about that bit, of course. Won't be able to hide it for too long. If the numbers of performed tests don't skyrocket in a week, they will have failed spectacularly, and it will get very very bad.
