they probably wanted to prevent a PPE shortage and at the time did not think covid was widespread enough to justify advising everybody to wear a mask whether or not they had tested positive
So option 2.
Now you expect people to trust the "science". Science doesn't make political decisions.

i didnt choose one of your narrative options.
the science was and is sound. assuming you're caught up to your April 2020 talking points, masks arent meant to protect the wearer in these cases. they're meant to be worn by people who are (unbeknownst to them) potentially infected to prevent them from spreading it around to others. during a period of time where cases were fairly minimal, it didnt necessarily make sense to advise that everybody wear masks.
as cases began to grow and it was clear the spread was rapid, they told people to start wearing cloth masks, and not to hoard N95 style masks
why do you put science in quotation marks. are you not a believer in the scientific method? weird considering your supposed profession

Woman harasses County Judge Nelson Wolff at H-E-B over mask mandate
A San Antonio woman unhappy with mask mandates followed Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff through the parking lot of an H-E-B on Sunday,
making veiled threats and yelling that he was a communist and a traitor for his implementation of mask mandates.
The woman, a hairstylist who goes by the name of Ashley Rocks on social media,
filmed herself berating Wolff as he pushed his shopping cart to his car at the store on NW Military Highway.
At one point she shouted that Wolff “won’t be able to walk in the streets for long.”
“You are going to go to jail, they are going to hang you,” Rocks said in the video.
“Treason and crimes against humanity,
you are going down,
better enjoy your freedom while it lasts buddy.
Then you have to answer to God.”

I've already given my reasoning for this and neither you nor anyone else here offered a decent rebuttal.
1. CDC was ignorant about asymptomatic cases despite other viruses having that characteristic (incompetence)
2. CDC was aware that asymptomatic cases can exist and were more concerned with herd mentality and mask shortages (so they lied about the efficacy of masks)
Even the surgeon general said masks don't work against the virus. The advice was that, if you aren't sick, don't wear a mask. Of course right away even layman folk thought "but what about asymptomatic people?". You'd have me believe the CDC didn't consider this early?
Whether or not masks work and whether or not vaccines work, organizations like that lose a section of the population when they exhibit tendencies to bend to political pressure. They are either scientists or they are politicians. When scientists bend to politics you get what you have now.

Florida’s funeral homes are overwhelmed by COVID-19 deaths: 'Funerals and funerals and funerals'
in Florida, according to CBS News (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/florida-funeral-homes-covid-deaths-overworked-morgues/), employees of funeral homes are absolutely swamped.
one in five (https://www.orlandosentinel.com/coronavirus/os-ne-coronavirus-florida-covid-surge-20210716-ntxwkk4hbvhedew77e4lrkihdq-story.html) new COVID-19 cases in the United States was occurring in Florida.
DeSantis
has opposed social distancing measures,
forbidden public schools from having mask mandates (https://www.npr.org/sections/back-to-school-live-updates/2021/08/27/1031714923/florida-judge-throws-out-governor-ron-desantis-order-prohibiting-masks-in-school), and
tried to score cheap political points with his MAGA base by railing against expert immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci. (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/florida-fauci-desantis-tshirt-covid-b1911336.html)
"In the last week of August, Florida hospitals averaged 279 deaths per day — up from 52 in July,
Overall, the state has reported a total over 44,000 coronavirus deaths over the course of the pandemic,
"There's been days I've come home, and I'm exhausted — and I'm talking to my daughter, and I'm falling asleep as I'm talking to her.
Every day is funerals and funerals and funerals."
Prindiville "routinely works 14-hour days booking funerals, meeting with grieving families, transporting bodies and overseeing services."
, "What makes it difficult for us nowadays is just explaining to family members that we cannot have — and we'll have to hold off having — a funeral. In an hour, I could have six death calls,
https://www.rawstory.com/floridas-funeral-homes-are-overwhelmed-by-19-deaths-funerals-and-funerals-and-funerals
Still ignoring the fact that NY is a dem controlled state. Guaranteed if a red state had 25K deaths and NY had 500 or so, several of you would be pointing out daily how the repug lead state governments killed people.
Why are you folks so afraid to address the NY situation honestly instead of going for the November agenda? It's not a good look for ya's.
Are you saying this is wrong:
2. No, the president cannot simply order state and local officials to change their policies
Here we have issues that fall under the headings of both federalism and separation of powers. Let’s start with federalism.
Most readers will appreciate this already, but it needs to be said: Our constitutional order has a federal structure, meaning that (a) federal powers are supreme, yes, but limited in scope and (b) the state governments are independent entities, not mere subordinate layers under and within the federal government (that is, the federal-state relationship is not similar to the way that counties and cities are subordinate layers under the state governments).
What follows from this? The federal government cannot commandeer the machinery of the state governments (or, by extension, of local governments). That is, the federal government cannot coerce the states into taking actions to suit federal policy preference. See, e.g., New York v. United States and Printz v. United States. And so, the federal government cannot compel state and local officials to promulgate different rules on social distancing and the like.
Yeah I said this. Yeah I called it.
Suddenly the COVID death gets blamed on the state decisions instead of the POTUS. Gee what changed? Oh that's right.. I almost forgot :lol

aka (herding) like President Trump told you 2 January's ago come January.
:lol no, let's see what he was actually saying back then...
Jan. 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.”
Jan. 30: “We think we have it very well under control. We have very little problem in this country at this moment — five — and those people are all recuperating successfully. But we’re working very closely with China and other countries, and we think it’s going to have a very good ending for us … that I can assure you.”
Feb. 10: “Now, the virus that we’re talking about having to do — you know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat — as the heat comes in. Typically, that will go away in April. We’re in great shape though. We have 12 cases — 11 cases, and many of them are in good shape now.”
Feb. 14: “There’s a theory that, in April, when it gets warm — historically, that has been able to kill the virus. So we don’t know yet; we’re not sure yet. But that’s around the corner.”
Feb. 23: “We have it very much under control in this country.”
Feb. 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”
Feb. 26: “So we’re at the low level. As they get better, we take them off the list, so that we’re going to be pretty soon at only five people. And we could be at just one or two people over the next short period of time. So we’ve had very good luck.”
Feb. 26: “And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done.”
Feb. 26: “I think every aspect of our society should be prepared. I don’t think it’s going to come to that, especially with the fact that we’re going down, not up. We’re going very substantially down, not up.”
Feb. 27: “It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear.”

Mask, travel, congregations. Shut it a down. A la March 2020But for travel restrictions (which I agree would help), all that's in the bailiwick of the states.
US states did all the heavy lifting regarding non-medical intervention last year. There were no federal mandates, just federal advice. It was the states that issued shelter in place orders, defined essential workers and shut down businesses, churches and other places people congregate.
A federal mandate would be necessary for international travel restrictions, but other than that, the power lies where it belongs imho -- states are better situated to respond to local and regional conditions. As you well know, pandemic spread is discontinuous.
Why are you for one-size fits all federal mandates?

Given that cities and states are best situated to assess and respond to local conditions, it kinda seems like BDS/TDS on your part to insist that they have no responsibility.

the federal structure of the US is a good thing IMO but not in a pandemic, the virus doesnt give a damn about jurisdictions. and federal mandates dont necessarily mean one size fits all, you can have a mandate with tiers based on certain indicators (positivity, % of population vaccinated, etc), but leaving it in the hands of states is irresponsible IMO. always knew the US would struggle to contain outbreaks without a coordinated policy, regardless of what party is in charge...

Drumpf deserved the flames for undermining public health in cities and states trying to protect people, for his asinine grandstanding and for his callous disregard for Americans -- in short, for bad policies, bad messaging and bad leadership. That's not "blaming COVID on him," it's a job evaluation. COVID was DJT's call to greatness in public service, and he failed. It's fair to hold Biden to similar standards and to point out how he has failed too.
Biden and Trump both sold us down the river for political expedience and happy talk that things will soon be better. The toll will be told in sickness disability and death. And a badly compromised health care system. Cities and states that put political pandering over public health will share responsibility for this outcome.

Big news
NEWLY RELEASED DOCUMENTS provide details of U.S.-funded research on several types of coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. The Intercept has obtained more than 900 pages of documents detailing the work of EcoHealth Alliance, a U.S.-based health organization that used federal money to fund bat coronavirus research at the Chinese laboratory. The trove of documents includes two previously unpublished grant proposals that were funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, as well as project updates relating to EcoHealth Alliance’s research, which has been scrutinized amid increased interest in the origins of the pandemic.

The research also involved screening people who work with live animals. The documents contain several critical details about the research in Wuhan, including the fact that key experimental work with humanized mice was conducted at a biosafety level 3 lab at Wuhan University Center for Animal Experiment — and not at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as was previously assumed.

The grant proposal acknowledges some of those dangers: “Fieldwork involves the highest risk of exposure to SARS or other CoVs, while working in caves with high bat density overhead and the potential for fecal dust to be inhaled.”

29 new cases at my son's fully masked school
pack them in at 25-30 per class, and mix them up every hour for 7 hours per day, five days a week, and it doesn't really make much of a difference, tbh.
You said that hospitals wouldn't be overwhelmed.

We are in the "fuck around and find out" stage, where, once again, we get to see how shitty conservative policy solutions are at dealing with IRL problems.

We came within a hair's breadth of it happening here, hospitalizations currently flattening and slowly going down.
Be interesting to see what happens in a few weeks when the school related wave hits.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg just announced Bexar County's positivity rate down to 7.6% in the Tuesday COVID-19 report. Hope this declining trend continues.
the truth of how many cases there are, and how widespread the virus is... is a big factor re: recommending everybody wear masks.
Since you're floundering here, let me answer for you.
Nothing about the virus changed prior to the flip flop on masks. It was the exact same virus. So either the CDC was ignorant about the virus or they were lying about the efficacy of the masks. You can hide from that in your rhetoric all you like, them's the facts.

i dont have to pick one of your two narratives
lets try this one, for example. one of these must be true
a) you fuck your mother regularly
b) you fuck your sister regularly

the amount of cases changed prior to the changed guidance on masks
if there are a small number of people carrying a virus, it doesnt make much sense to advise the entire public to wear masks all the time. as the number of cases ballooned, guidances changed

When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is. It's one thing to say straight out "it's more important that the medical care providers have PPE" and quite another to say "Masks are ineffective" as a way to keep masks around for the medical care providers.
From the Salt Lake Tribune
Here’s the problem: Masking is a highly visible issue. To explain the difference between aerosolized and droplet spread, you have to get in the weeds a bit. On the other hand, if one day a scientist tells you not to wear a mask, and a month later he tells you to wear a mask, it’s a huge and obvious material shift.
The CDC had two better options here. Both involved being more transparent with the public.
The first would have been to lead with the truth about the shortage of personal protective equipment. “We need masks for doctors and nurses right now. Hold on for a minute, and petition your politicians to spend money to get these masks manufactured more quickly.”
The second would have been to lead with the state of the evidence: “There are studies showing masks are effective for doctors, but we don’t know yet for regular people. Wearing one can’t hurt, though, so wear one if you have one. Hang tight while we do more research, and, in the meantime, petition your politicians to spend money to get these masks manufactured more quickly.”
They went with option No. 3, which was: “Tell the American people they didn’t need to wear masks.” That was a bad idea — a trust-breaking twisting of the truth for many.

Astro-Zeneca pushes back against boosters in the UK
And the heads of AstraZeneca have warned that booster jabs may not be needed for everyone in Britain, and a rush to roll it out nationwide risks putting additional strain on the NHS.
Pascal Soriot, chief executive of the company, said the UK remains ‘a few weeks away’ from being able to make a decision on pushing a vaccine booster programme across the country.
Writing in the Telegraph, Mr Soriot, along with Executive Vice President of BioPharmaceuticals R&D, Sir Mene Pangalos, warned that moving ‘too quickly’ to boost the whole adult population would deprive scientists of insights into the effectiveness of two vaccine doses.

On the one hand, it’s revealing, and not a good way, to see drug company execs admit that they are conducting experiments on the public at large, without the normal consents and controls. But on the other, they are saying flat out that they don’t have any evidentiary ground for seeing another round of shots as beneficial right now.
