Fourteen residents at a German nursing home have tested positive despite receiving two vaccine doses. Markus Söder has warned against lifting Germany's lockdown too soon. All the latest COVID news.
Local officials in the district of Osnabruck, Germany, said there was an outbreak of the UK variant of coronavirus at a nursing home in Belm.
The outbreak came despite all of its residents already receiving two doses of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine, with their last shot on January 25.

Bigger question is if they die, get sick enough to go to a hospital, or they remain healthy otherwise.
PS. They should all continue wearing masks!

now take the 5% that are left, which is a very large number because this is a virus very capable of infecting large numbers of people, and reduce that another 90% or whatever.
then you get people back in school and the economy working again and you can even get back into the hospital to get your brain replaced.
Keep in mind we still don’t know the long-term effects of getting this thing. And having severe symptoms that did not go to the hospital. Most of these people are not on record.

Damn damn damn damn damn
Professor Sir Ian Boyd, who teaches at the University of St Andrews' School of Biology, warned this week against the frequent lifting of lockdowns because "it simply fuels a new wave of disease" that can cause the virus to replicate more and mutate into new strains.
"There are a lot of reasons for taking pain now in order to create conditions for controlled release from [restrictions] a lot easier," he argued, adding, "Otherwise we risk just passing through phases of various levels of lockdown and release."
Boyd said that lockdowns "could go on for a long time," despite the UK's mass vaccination program. "My suspicion is that we will experience a damped oscillation of control-release for a long time to come — perhaps several years."

My suspicion is that US politicians can conceive of no tragedy worse than closing businesses temporarily in the public interest, a half million US COVID deaths since last February totally notwithstanding. My suspicion is there will be no repeat in the US if it can be avoided by any means whatsoever. If 250,000 more Americans have die while standing in the shadow of the vaccine, so be it.
Also, it proved right off the bat that the USG could afford a superdole on the fly. Gotta nip that expectation in the bud.

What they're saying: "This is the first time that anyone has been able to take this gold-standard laboratory equipment…and put it in a [form] that anyone can just carry in their hand," Visby CEO Adam de la Zerda said.
“The fact that it's single use means you don’t have to worry about an instrument and you have unlimited testing capacity," he added. Results take only 30 minutes.
State of play: The FDA authorized the PCR test for use in labs and hospitals a few months ago. This week, the agency said the test can be used in places like airports, schools and businesses, as long as they've received a waiver from the FDA requirement that tests be run by a laboratorian.

The UK’s covid app made a serious difference during the winter surge
That's a big deal for exposure notifications, which have had a tough time proving how useful they are.
The study by a team of Oxford researchers modeled the impact of 1.5 million notifications that had been sent by the UK’s NHS app between October 1 and December 31, when almost 2 million people were infected with covid-19.
Their analysis showed that
each person who tested positive and used their app to alert others sent out an average of 4.4 notifications;
without this intervention, they projected that there would have been between 200,000 and 900,000 more cases.
The data show, as we have reported previously (https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/06/05/1002775/covid-apps-effective-at-less-than-60-percent-download/), that even modest use of such apps can have a significant impact:
“For each 1% increase in users,” said the researchers,
“We estimate the number of cases will drop by between 0.8% and 2.3%”

The acquired immune system "mutates"/teaches its anti-bodies to handle a slightly mutated virus?
If you were asking a question, and I am reading it correctly, here is the idea as it stands now with our immune system.
When you are vaccinated you will basically produce a variety of cells with receptors that are slightly different. these receptors are responsible for recognizing viral particles and then in response producing antibodies Of the shape of their receptors (for the sake of simplicity there are more cells involved but this is the basic idea) . So in effect the cells with the right receptor shape produces the right shape antibodies are selected for from a range of cells your body has produced that have slightly different receptor shapes.
it is an absolutely beautiful system. our own cells create a range of receptor and antibody shapes. This happens readily because the DNA regions that code for antibodies. there is this mixing and matching of different code that is slightly different so it produces slightly different shapes. For a very long time we had no idea how for example, a rabbit could produce antibodies to chocolate. A rabbit certainly doesn’t carry a specific gene against chocolate. This would be in a mess. Organisms could never have that many genes. So what happens instead is you create a variety of cells that have a variety of receptor shapes. The right shape is actually selected for by binding with an unknown alien chemical structure entering the body like that of a virus or chocolate. Anyways, when that particular shape binds, the cell also produces more cells like itself but with slightly different variations that can get closer and closer to the shape of the invader. I don’t mean to sound like a know it all but this is absolutely incredible. Not to mention your immune system has the ability to recognize self from some sort of alien form (problems with this produce auto immune diseases).
So I’m thinking you referring to our own mutations, that’s actually the DNA mixing and matching in immune system cells to produce a wide range of receptors.
hope this makes sense and as always
tl;dr it as desired ... cell phone voice recognition with corrections is difficult, apologies

This long article scrutinizes the CDC's school ropening guidance. It draws on two CDC documents:
1) Operational Strategy for K-12 Schools through Phased Mitigation (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/operation-strategy.html#executive-summary) (“Strategy“) (updated Feb. 12, 2021), which provides guidance to the schools, and
2) Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in K-12 schools (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/more/science-and-research/transmission_k_12_schools.html) (“Transmission“) (updated Feb. 12, 2021), which documents “the science” upon which the guidance is (putatively) based.
Some highlights:
There are two central issues with Strategy. The first might be labeled its Central Dogma. The second is the action items in Strategy. Here is the CDC’s Central Dogma:
The occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in schools reflects transmission in the surrounding community.
That is, schools themselves are not drivers of transmission, but rather, as it were, passive recipients of it. This is certainly disputable, for example in this recent thread on Montréal:

Politics prioritized over science, according to Lambert Strether
In the process of writing this report, the committee repeatedly returned to conversations around the role of airborne transmission of COVID-19. As described in Chapter 3, indoor air quality in U.S. public schools is notoriously poor, which can have innumerable deleterious health impacts on students and staff. However, because there is not yet scientific consensus on the role of airborne transmission in the spread of the virus, it is also unclear how the indoor air quality of schools matters in the spread of COVID-19. Given the considerable cost associated with updating aging facilities, it is particularly important to understand the exact role of airborne transmission such that stakeholders can assess the relative value and utility of that investment.
Needless to say, this is a budgetary — hence political — constraint, not “the science.” Nor could it be! And sadly, by reducing the question of aerosol transmission and indoor quality to facilities they enable the CDC to deny children, parents, and teachers simpler methods of mitigation:

side effect: rapid urban change
With Paris traffic subdued by a COVID-19 lockdown, Mayor Anne Hidalgo (https://www.project-syndicate.org/columnist/anne-hidalgo) decided on April 30 to close the nearly two-mile-long road to cars, in order to create more space for pedestrians and bicyclists. Workers repainted the road and transformed a major artery in central Paris – home of the world-renowned Louvre museum – virtually overnight.
It was not just Rue de Rivoli. Using only paint and screw-in markers, nearly 100 miles of Parisian roads were temporarily reallocated to cyclists in the early months of the pandemic – a revolution in urban reprogramming. It was later announced that the changes would become permanent.
The Parisian example highlights the extent to which the pandemic has accelerated the pace of urban innovation, compressing what would have taken years into months or even weeks. Beyond highlighting the flaws in pre-pandemic urban systems – such as high levels of pollution – it has allowed city leaders to bypass cumbersome bureaucracy, and respond much more efficiently to the needs of people and businesses.

why would you think the vaccine will stop the spread of the virus? the vaccine preps your immune system to attack it and/or can prevent the virus from taking hold onto your cells. The vaccine on it's own doesn't kill the virus, it's not a disinfectant.

Of course vaccines supposed to stop spread thats the point of them dummy :lol
Polio vaccine for example prevents spread. Yes it does not kill virus completely but prevents shedding of virus to stop spread to others
Thats kinda the point of vaccines :lol

yes, what? :lol
No they don't, at least not directly. That includes the polio vaccine. It took 40 years for the US to be polio free (which really means no polio cases originated from the US), but polio is still around, especially in undeveloped countries. We had travelers bringing it back here (IIRC, last documented case was in '93).
What vaccines do is assist the body in killing the virus, which, over time, it means it decreases the virus population, and thus risk of spread. Much like the effect of accelerated herd immunity.
We're going to be with this thing for long, what vaccines largely avoid is people dying from it.

CDC Urges Stricter Gym Precautions After COVID-19 Outbreaks Linked To Facilities
In Illinois, the CDC said, 68% of the 81 people who attended indoor exercise classes at one unidentified Chicago facility (https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7009e2.htm) between Aug. 24 and Sept. 1 ended up contracting the virus.
Of those who contracted the virus, 44% admitted they attended an indoor exercise class either on or after the day that their symptoms first started,
In the case of Hawaii, 21 COVID-19 cases were linked to a fitness instructor who taught group classes at two fitness facilities in Honolulu immediately before he started showing symptoms of the virus on June 29.
One of his infected students, a 46-year-old man who worked as a personal trainer, went on to give fitness classes at a third gym before he was hospitalized for the virus.

But get in line and beg when you get there. My neighbor said there were a bunch of "young folks"
I would give the "show up" a go if your Mom can handle a line and the time. Show up really early well before 8 am. I would.

My mom's next door neighbor, cool guy, a middle school teacher in his 40's, already double vaccinated through NISD.
My mom, in her 70's, still trying to get an appointment for first shot.
Many people are scared off by the 2nd dose side effects and therefore, are a no show for their appointments. So if you take your mom to a site in which it is only 2nd dose being administered and plead your case, preferably at the end of the day, there is a decent shot she gets the vaccine. I personally saw this happen. They thaw these doses out and they are only good for so long, so many have gotten a shot by improvising.

While the West, esp USA, struggles to vaccinate its own population, and due to Pootin's Punk Trash degrading America's "soft power",
China and Russia are expanding their soft power (influence) by rushing 100Ms of vaccine doses to countries abandoned by the West.
As always, Capitalism is the criminal bogeyman, having bribed govts into drug patent protections which patents the drug companies continue to rig and abuse to keep enriching investors.
Western drug companies restricting production to themselves by patent law limits the volume of vaccines to pocket all vaccine profits.

The Trump administration quietly spent billions in hospital funds on Operation Warp Speed
The Trump administration quietly took around $10 billion from a fund meant to help hospitals and health care providers affected by Covid-19 and used the money to bankroll Operation Warp Speed contracts, four former Trump administration officials told STAT.
used a financial maneuver that allowed officials to spend the money without telling Congress, and
the agency got permission from its top lawyer to do so.
Now, the Biden administration is refusing to say whether the outlay means there will be less money available for hospitals, physicians, nursing homes, and other providers.
Congress set aside that money to help health care providers pay for pandemic-related expenses including staffing, personal protective equipment, care for uninsured patients, and vaccine distribution.
One of the top hospital lobbyists in D.C., who also did not know about the outlay, emphasized how much some hospitals still need the funding.

Covid Brazil variant 'may spread more easily'
The Brazil coronavirus variant now found in the UK appears more contagious and may evade immunity provided by past infection, scientists say.
Experiences from Manaus - the Amazonian city hit hard by the P.1 variant -
suggest it could be up to twice as transmissible as earlier Covid there, the first detailed study suggests.
The preliminary work (https://github.com/CADDE-CENTRE/Novel-SARS-CoV-2-P1-Lineage-in-Brazil/blob/main/manuscript/FINAL_P1_MANUSCRIPT_25-02-2021_combined.pdf) puts the chance of reinfection at between 25% and 60%.

The specific mutations that are causing concern from a vaccination/acquired immunity perspective will occur naturally as selective pressure gets placed on the virus. Paul Bieniasz demonstrated this in the lab a year ago. E484K for example has been arising independently worldwide. Here's the latest variant which has E484K and more

Ill put my bet on the vaccines. This is exactly why people abusing antibiotics produced strains of bacteria that are antibiotic resistant. But they have not taken over the world. These were bacteria that we do NOT have effective vaccines to. A good vaccine routine let us stay a step ahead of selection pressures. But it will be a constant battle.
The research (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/24/health/coronavirus-variant-nyc.html) from teams at Caltech and Columbia, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, suggests that the variant known as B.1.526 could dampen the effectiveness of some current vaccine candidates
Im going with we are good. Especially since we can produce new vaccines very quickly now. Lots of ways to attack a protein, not just one particular protein like the current vaccine basically does with Covid and Covid variants. Eventually we might get a variant arise that merely produces a cold and spreads. That would be good for us and the virus. And tends to happen over time. Not good to kill the host, just spread and not hurt them. Thats what this virus does with numerous bats in China.

“I couldn’t sleep” after seeing the data, Murray, director of the Seattle-based Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, told Reuters. “When will it end?” he asked himself, referring to the pandemic. He is currently updating his model to account for variants’ ability to escape natural immunity and expects to provide new projections as early as this week.
A new consensus is emerging among scientists, according to Reuters interviews with 18 specialists who closely track the pandemic or are working to curb its impact. Many described how the breakthrough late last year of two vaccines with around 95% efficacy against COVID-19 had initially sparked hope that the virus could be largely contained, similar to the way measles has been.
But, they say, data in recent weeks on new variants from South Africa and Brazil has undercut that optimism. They now believe that SARS-CoV-2 will not only remain with us as an endemic virus, continuing to circulate in communities, but will likely cause a significant burden of illness and death for years to come.
We all felt quite optimistic before Christmas with those first vaccines,” said Azra Ghani, chair in infectious disease epidemiology at Imperial College London. “We didn't necessarily expect such high-efficacy vaccines to be possible in that first generation.”
The optimism proved short-lived. In late December, the UK warned of a new, more transmissible variant that was quickly becoming the dominant form of the coronavirus in the country. Around the same time, researchers learned of the impact of the faster-spreading variants in South Africa and in Brazil.
The most recent change of heart was considerable, several of the scientists told Reuters. Shane Crotty, a virologist at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in San Diego, described it as “scientific whiplash”: In December, he had believed it was plausible to achieve so-called "functional eradication" of the coronavirus, similar to measles.
Now, “getting as many people vaccinated as possible is still the same answer and the same path forward as it was on December 1 or January 1,” Crotty said, “but the expected outcome isn't the same.”

F it! Masks off bro!
I've literally been eating, almost daily, in 1 or 2 restaurants a day for the past year. This is all so ridiculous and those who want a prison state love the oppression and I am not necessarily talking about masks.

Not where I work bro!
They are all on.
And will stay on until we get people vaccinated and this becomes like the flu.
Sorry the world I live in puts people in close proximity.
I also dont fart in peoples faces or smoke and blow the shit at them.
Some day you will come to the realization we breathe the same air, especially inside.

I didn't say we're imprisoned by masks but your lack of questioning big daddy government, and hired death docs like fauxci who lie time and time again, is concerning.

We will never beat the flu. It will kill every year, young and old mostly.
We might never beat this virus, or we might just like we did Small Pox and Polio.
This virus is super contagious but not a horrific killer % wise like Ebola was.
But because this virus tests so many peoples systems for weaknesses its going to KILL a whole hell of a lot more people.
Its not that hard to get.

The wipeout of Manaus is where the discovered the covid strain that is not attacked by vaccine anti-bodies.
