What does ‘recovered from coronavirus’ mean?
4 questions answered about how some survive and what happens next
Medically, a person must be fever-free without fever-reducing medications for three consecutive days. They must show an improvement in their other symptoms, including reduced coughing and shortness of breath. And it must be at least seven full days since the symptoms began (https://health.usnews.com/conditions/articles/coronavirus-recovery-what-to-know).
In addition to those requirements, the CDC guidelines say that a person must test negative for the coronavirus twice, with the tests taken at least 24 hours apart (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/care-for-someone.html).
Only then, if both the symptom and testing conditions are met, is a person officially considered recovered by the CDC.
Once communities pass the peak of the epidemic, the number of new infections will decline, while the number of recovered people will increase (https://www.newsweek.com/china-says-passed-peak-coronavirus-epidemic-covid-19-1491863).
As these trends continue, the risk of transmission will fall.
Once the risk of transmission has fallen enough,
community-level isolation and social distancing orders will begin to relax and businesses will start to reopen.
Based on what other countries have gone through,
it will be months until the risk of transmission is low (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00154-w) in the U.S.

I wish I could get the antibody test to see if I really had it or not.
I am going to bitch at my doctor some more to see if he will relent and test me.
I think the tests are still rolling out and/or are limited and more than likely I will not rate being important enough to get a test-at least soon
South Texas Blood & Tissue is doing free antibody testing to get plasma. It's unclear if you have to be a confirmed positive though. I sent them an email so I'll see what they say.
Methodist started antibody testing on Tuesday so my wife planned to get tested but the conversation went...
How much is the test?
We don't know, we'll bill your insurance
Will my insurance cover it?
We don't know
Well how much could it cost me ballpark?
We don't know

The knockdown argument against the Conservative fear that universal healthcare would be some centralized government clusterfuck is the fact the American military exists, which is "universal national defense." The American military has the most advanced tech in the world, has probably spurred more broad technological innovation over the past 50 years (i.e. Internet) than any other "industry," and when swift action is called for, we're "shocking and aweing" in like 20 minutes from the time a president signs a war declaration.
Now imagine if we were as passionate about building up and funding a healthcare infrastructure like we are with funding the military? We'd have a healthcare system that would put Europe's to shame. But no, goat farmers with 70s Soviet hand-me-downs are the "real" threat.

Trump hasn't issued any national shutdown order. As far as the travel ban, it was a good precaution, but interestingly, the virus strain that has slammed New York was found to be of European lineage.
Anyhow, I'll credit him where it's due, but it's still 100 percent fuckin' inexcusable for him that he continued to downplay it ("Stock market looking good! Don't worry about the virus!") into early March. That's why I feel the China ban was more a political dog whistle to "the base" rather than actual concern. There's no defending that 6 week period where he downplayed and downplayed, while his Fox News propaganda machine were calling it a Democratic hoax to hurt his re-election chances.

Exposing Covid-19 trutherism:
Seen this shit take from some here -
Claim: Anyone who dies is counted as a coronavirus death!
Truthers repeat that “dying with coronavirus is different from dying of coronavirus,” imagining that scores of unrelated cancer and automotive deaths are being chalked up to COVID-19 if they test positive for the disease.
Conspiracy theorists ignore this and construct a narrative based on alternative facts. Trump superfan Bill Mitchell, for example, insinuated that New York City uses overgenerous criteria for counting COVID-19 deaths, supposedly employing the same misguided method as Italy. To back this up, truthers often quote an Italian doctor, Walter Ricciardi:
The way in which we code deaths in our country is very generous in the sense that all the people who die in hospitals with the coronavirus are deemed to be dying of the coronavirus. On re-evaluation by the National Institute of Health, only 12 per cent of death certificates have shown a direct causality from coronavirus, while 88 per cent of patients who have died have at least one pre-morbidity …
But Dr. Ricciardi was not saying that COVID-19 didn’t kill patients with comorbidities. The report itself, which studied a subset of just 355 victims, refers to evaluated “patients who died as a result of COVID-2019 infection.” And for good reason: the most common comorbidity, hypertension (76 percent), is not an acutely fatal condition. Over 100 million Americans have hypertension, and most of them live for decades. And the 88 percent figure Ricciardi mentioned isn’t accurate either. A more comprehensive study of 1591 Italian victims found that only 68 percent of the victims had comorbidities, including 65 percent of the victims under 50 years old.
https://arcdigital.media/debunking-coronavirus-trutherism-c290fc660a12
The bold is a point missed by morons like Bill Mitchell. Covid-19 exacerbates common co-morbidities like hypertension, COPD, etc that are livable for the most part into an acutely lethal situation.

It requires a prescription. If doctors are prescribing it more because of what Trump said, they are suspect already. Patients may ask for it but that should not cause a run on it.
The problem is that the hoarding and difficulty of obtaining that drug is real and directly attributable to him, just have a cursory look at the timeline and even when studies on that drug became available.
And I don't even think he did that with the notion or understanding that he would cause such a problem, but that's the difference of being a crisis communicator vs an entertainer.
I do take more issue to the fact he continued to double down on it afterwards, even after his own medical experts directly contradicted him, and the shortages were known. That's flat out stupid and enters the dangerous territory, for what? his ego and pettiness?

Why is voting by mail good enough for Trump but not anyone else?
The problem is that the hoarding and difficulty of obtaining that drug is real and directly attributable to him, just have a cursory look at the timeline and even when studies on that drug became available.
You repeated the assertion without addressing just how it's possible for someone without a prescription to even obtain the drug, much less hoard it. If anything, the drug is being hoarded by manufacturers and authorities. If physicians are prescribing it as a off-label script, that's on them. That's not on the panic stricken public who has no access to it.
I get all that, please address the point I made.

The initial reports were that doctors indeed were hoarding them, to the point where some places simply had to tell pharmacists to stop filling off label prescriptions.
https://www.propublica.org/article/doctors-are-hoarding-unproven-coronavirus-medicine-by-writing-prescriptions-for-themselves-and-their-families

"That's on them" doesn't really invalidate the fact that you can point directly at the POTUS for sparking the hoarding, and then doubling down on it. Fortunately, there was actual State leadership here taking place so patients that actually needed the drug could get it.

Cool your jets, cowboy. Just speculating of course, but with the "stay at home" order I suspect there is a lot more sex happening than normal. If you are the exception I can understand how it confused you.
The only people having more sex are people who cohabitate and don't have kids. Single people and parents definitely aren't having more sex.

Not sure if this has been posted or not, but its about temps and how much COVID spreads.
https://www.nap.edu/read/25771/chapter/1#7
TLDR, it has a small effect but its not going to stop the spread without social distancing.
I'm thinking UV light might be more of the "culprit" in this case rather than just raw temperature in slowing down transmission. I think Australia is a pretty interesting case study. They did get started late with their social distancing, and they just haven't seen a spike of any kind.
Also, I've read a summary of that study on other outlets, and I have an issue with this conclusion:
Given that countries in their summer climates, like Australia and Iran, are experiencing rapid virus spread...
During March, Iran averaged 62 degrees vs. Australia's 74 degrees. Australia also hasn't experienced any sort of "rapid spread." Melbourne didn't close down their beaches until March 28th, and despite their late action, spread just hasn't went exponential there. 52 deaths total. They do have the population density factor working in their favor, but Melbourne's population density is about the same as Los Angeles, and LA has 4x times as many deaths as all of Australia. Iran was running neck and neck with Italy early on, but Italy started to go exponential while Iran has been at the 130-160 death count for 3 weeks. And their new case rate is starting to bend down. But the caveat here is we have no idea how good the data is from Iran.
But as the study articulated, we really don't know how each of those "confounding factors" is individually affecting spread, so it's impossible right now to make any definitive conclusions. Maybe in Australia's case, sunlight or temperature has nothing to do with it, and it's about population density. Or maybe it's the reverse. Or a 65/35 split, etc, etc, etc.

Workers wearing personal protective equipment bury bodies in a trench on Hart Island, Thursday, April 9, 2020, in the Bronx borough of New York. On Thursday, New York City’s medical examiner confirmed that the city has shortened the amount of time it will hold on to remains to 14 days from 30 days before they will be transferred for temporary internment at a City Cemetery. Earlier in the week, Mayor Bill DeBlasio said that officials have explored the possibility of temporary burials on Hart Island, a strip of land in Long Island Sound that has long served as the city’s potter’s field. "Coronavirus case counts are rising exponentially in Africa. Since the continent saw its first case, in Egypt in mid-February, some 10,000 cases and 500 deaths have been confirmed.
Public health officials think this is just the beginning, and they worry that the situation in the coming weeks will get much worse. "COVID-19 has the potential not only to cause thousands of deaths, but to also unleash economic and social devastation," Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa, said in a statement Wednesday.
There are several reasons why health officials are especially concerned about the impact of COVID-19 in African countries...."

SOME GOOD FUCKIN NEWS FINALLY:
"So far, no transmission of the virus in supermarkets, restaurants or hairdressers has been proven," explained Bonn virologist Hendrik Streeck on the ZDF Markus Lanz talk show.
Instead, the major outbreaks have been the result of close get-togethers over a longer period of time, he said.
That's demonstrated in, for example, outbreaks that have stemmed from après-ski parties in Ischgl, at football matches in Bergamo or at carnival celebrations in the municipality of Gangelt in the Heinsberg district of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Initial surveys and investigations in homes in Heinsberg have already provided some indications of how the virus works. Streeck, who is director of the Institute of Virology at Bonn University, said he was able to detect coronavirus by swabbing remote controls, washbasins, mobile phones, toilets or door handles.
However, it has not been possible to cultivate the virus in the laboratory on the basis of these swabs. "This means that we have detected the RNA (or ribonucleic acid, which carries the virus’s genetic information) of 'dead' viruses," Streeck said.
According to his previous research results, he believes "that a door handle can only be infectious if someone has actually coughed in their hand and then reached for it.

And some even better news. Germans conducted serotests within a town and found 14% of that population had antibodies (meaning prior infections that weren't counted as "official cases"), so this could illustrate how vastly we are undercounting recovered cases, which in turn will dramatically lower the mortality rate.
From the result of their blood survey, the German team estimated the death rate in the municipality at 0.37% overall, a figure significantly lower than what’s shown on a dashboard maintained by Johns Hopkins, where the death rate in Germany among reported cases is 2%.

Yeah, the big challenge after this is for all of us to get psychologically comfortable in public spaces. I probably won't get it going shopping at Target or whatever, but I'd still feel nervous simply shopping at Target. And who knows when our precious sports will return to normal? Don't know long it will take us collectively to be comfortable sitting shoulder-to-shoulder in a stadium or arena. I do think this virus might be able to be snuffed out. One problem with the flu and why it's never been eradicated because it mutates quickly. From what I read on coronaviruses, they mutate very slowly. So if we can get a vax plus herd immunity, we might be able to prevent it from becoming endemic.

Yeah, sporting events, concerts, shit just indoor bars-- gonna be inching into a cold pool for awhile.

For all the talk of mutation, I've heard this one is somewhat stable.
If there is even one effective treatment, we can resume our lives.

The models assume all 50 states maintain the same level of social distancing into August. June would reset the clock.
There will be temptation to resume mid-May... I think it could backfire. But we'll see.

I think parks should be reopened. Can easily socially distance there. Bars, clubs, theaters, etc will be a no go for awhile. I think your AMC theaters and what not should start buying up empty lots where they can find them and turn them into Drive-ins. I can't see anyone being comfortable for like 2 or 3 years going to the movies, so if they want to continue revenue from ticket sales, drive ins might be the only option. There's always the streaming idea, but watching some blockbuster at home is pretty lame. I think people would enjoy Marvel movie number 600 on a 200 foot drive in screen in the comfort of their car. Getting good sound of this will be a challenge (those old drive-in speakers were garbage). Only solution I can think of is to stream the audio to the car's sound system over a dedicated frequency or patrons can bring their Bluetooth speaker of choice where the audio is streamed to (Bluetooth range suck, but you can install repeaters, I suppose).

I used an old time window speaker when I went but most people listen over the car radio via low power transmitter. I imagine if the studies like the one you posted hold up, theaters might try some kind of spacing scheme to keep the doors open.

I'm actually on the other side of this... I suspect once the doors open again, people will go right back. I actually expect life to resume fairly normally 2-3 months after relaxing the lockdowns (with few exceptions like masks), unless we get another spike. There will be economic incentives to this, like lower prices, etc.
If a relatively sound treatment comes around, just forget about it. It's free for all again.

Yet not one of them has given up their national health care system.
You know they spend less than half of what we do per capita on health care and have better outcomes, right?
You know Joe Biden's corpse and its DNC puppeteers will never give you national health care, right?
They are infinitely more likely than the Trump Death Cult Party to do so.
There are still children in cages. Getting Covid-19. I will vote against that. Happily.
Sorry man, whatever bullshit you want to make up about Democrats, I will lovingly, happily vote for them.
The Republican party killed our troops in Iraq, by making excuses for Bush's bungling.
The Republican party is now killing our fellow citizens by being slow to act against a pandemic, and in many cases, actively denying the danger.
I will never, ever, vote for a Republican again. They simply cannot be trusted to govern effectively.

Independent reporting has corroborated what [Silicon Valley tech executive Eric] Ries and other volunteers saw for themselves: “a fragmented procurement system now descending into chaos,” as the Associated Press put it. The news agency found that not a single shipment of medical-grade N95 masks arrived at U.S. ports during the month of March. The federal government was not only disorganized; it was absent. Federal agencies waited until mid-March to begin placing bulk orders for the urgently needed supplies, the A.P. found. The first large U.S. government order to the big U.S. producer 3M, for a hundred and seventy-three million dollars’ worth of N95 masks, was not placed until March 21st—the same day that Ries got his first phone call about the Kushner effort. The order, according to the A.P., did not even require the supplies to be delivered until the end of April, far too late to help with the thousands of cases already overwhelming hospitals.

Well crap. Sounds like my sister may have that shit and she has been visiting and getting groceries etc. for my elderly mother. No cough, but high fever, body, ache, headache...tested negative for flu and won't have covid results for a week.
The initial reports were that doctors indeed were hoarding them, to the point where some places simply had to tell pharmacists to stop filling off label prescriptions.
https://www.propublica.org/article/doctors-are-hoarding-unproven-coronavirus-medicine-by-writing-prescriptions-for-themselves-and-their-families
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/24/business/doctors-buying-coronavirus-drugs.html
https://www.wsj.com/articles/states-try-reducing-malaria-drug-hoarding-amid-unproven-coronavirus-benefit-11586095200
"That's on them" doesn't really invalidate the fact that you can point directly at the POTUS for sparking the hoarding, and then doubling down on it. Fortunately, there was actual State leadership here taking place so patients that actually needed the drug could get it.
If doctors are writing prescriptions to people for this medication perhaps they think it's effective? I don't think doctors are writing themselves prescriptions and just hoarding the medication as that would probably be illegal.
Do you really believe primary care physicians are going to prescribe an off-label medication because of what the president said? Or do you think that primary care physicians are gullible and bend to the will of the patient?
Then it raises a question that if primary care physicians are doing that with a medication that's unproven, are they doing it with other medication just because the patient saw it on television and isn't that what these drugmakers want? Otherwise why would they advertise it to common people?
So the real issue then should be with the primary care physicians or physicians in general who write prescriptions because the patient says they want it instead of because the doctor thinks they need it.

I don't know about this. And I'm basing this off the very limited sample size of the dogs I've had. For the most part, they've been pretty distant to people that I've deemed to be assholes. Even when that asshole makes an effort to be nice to the dog.
That being said, I'm sure if that asshole's first meeting was to give the dog a steak, it might be different. Anyway, I think they can often sense when someone is being genuine or not. Or maybe they sense that I might not like that person. No idea. But I think they're more perceptive than many people give them credit for. That being said, I'm sure if that asshole's first meeting was to give the dog a steak, it might be different. Anyway, I think they can often sense when someone is being genuine or not. Or maybe they sense that I might not like that person. No idea. But I think they're more perceptive than many people give them credit for. And probably not as perceptive as many others do give them credit for.
"Unless trained to be otherwise"
If you've ever had sex with a cow, you'd know this is false. Dogs are all like...what the fuck...that's all you got? You're not even going down on me?
But cows be like...mooooooo...moooooo. They're the most grateful lovers imo.

This reminds me of what Patrice O'Neal said, guys can have an all-day conversation about the most mundane shit and women will just say.... no that's fucking stupid. Women like to ruin it for guys.
You're comparing religion to science though.
I think the pig comparison makes more sense. Especially if they do show affection and intelligence. Still not an apples to apples comparison, since pigs haven't been specifically bred to be companions for thousands of years, but still it's a little harder to digest.
I see what you did there

Sweden seems to be purposefully killing off their elders and poor
they have 89 deaths per million inhabitants good for 10th worst in the world and thats more deaths per 1m than allof its sister nordic countries put together
I guess the Sweden experiment has failed?
the take it on the chin herd immunity was a hoax?
how is their economy going? their quality of life? we will keep posted in next few weeks
but its a fact that the Swedish strategy was no slam dunk
all those retarded morons who boast swedens strategy can go fuck themselves now :lolI don't know the particulars. I'd want to know what kind of numbers they were expecting and how open they were about the strategy to the citizens.

Florida Gov Ron DeSantis Skips Science, Math, Health, Logic And Ethics, Wants To Send Kids Back To Class
"This particular pandemic is one where, I don't think nationwide there's been a single fatality under 25. For whatever reason it just doesn't seem to threaten, you know, kids."
YOU KNOW.
"And we lose in Florida between five and 10 kids a year for the flu.
This one, for whatever reason, much more dangerous if you're 65 and plus than the flu, no doubt about that, if you're younger it just hasn't had an impact.
So that should factor into how we're viewing this."
six children under 20 have died in New York,
and a six-week-old infant in Connecticut died with the disease.
the lunatic asshole who refused to close the beaches (https://www.wonkette.com/ron-desantis-will-close-floridas-beaches-by-october-at-the-latest) because it was better to let a bunch of drunk spring break kids spread coronavirus all over America than to forego hotel and bar revenue.
That's why his state is identifying 1,000 new cases a day,
More importantly, children who walk around without symptoms
can transmit disease to their parents and grandparents.

Without a vaccine, a spike is guaranteed after the lockdown is relaxed. The masks the general public are wearing don't do shit except remind us not to touch our face.
I think the vaccine is the long term goal. A working treatment would at least make heard-immunity much more feasible without overwhelming the health system.

If doctors are writing prescriptions to people for this medication perhaps they think it's effective? I don't think doctors are writing themselves prescriptions and just hoarding the medication as that would probably be illegal.
They actually can and is legal as long as it's not a controlled substance. And apparently they did, not just for themselves but for their family (and let's be honest here, potential profit).
They couldn't possibly know it was effective, there were barely any studies that even discussed the drug as a treatment for covid at the time. Heck, it's effectiveness is still being investigated right now.
I do think people sometimes think the President is privy to information that the public isn't yet. Unfortunately, that can also deviate into irresponsible messaging that causes these kind of problems if the messenger is an idiot.
And to your latter point, yes, I agree that's also definitely an issue all too common in the US. I don't even think every doctor was a bad actor, but there's probably some of that going on: patients calling in asking doc if they can prescribe them that thing.
This whole thing got so politicized, I'm sure more than one found itself in a bind. It's just a shitty situation all around that could've easily been avoided.
