Anthony S. Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said
there is “no doubt” Donald J. Trump will be confronted with a surprise infectious disease outbreak during his presidency.
Fauci said the Trump administration will not only be challenged by ongoing global health threats such as influenza and HIV, but also a surprise disease outbreak.
“The history of the last 32 years that I have been the director of the NIAID will tell the next administration that
there is no doubt they will be faced with the challenges their predecessors were faced with,”
preventing disease pandemics often starts overseas and that
a proper response means collaboration between not only the U.S. and other countries, but also the public and private health sectors.
“We will definitely get surprised in the next few years,” he said.
Trump, has worried some infectious disease experts (http://www.healio.com/infectious-disease/practice-management/news/online/%7B2e91e852-1fe7-467e-9602-4c4bef13b3ad%7D/id-experts-anxious-uncertain-about-trump-presidency) with controversial :lol and sometimes unclear views :lol on certain health issues.
Trump’s virtual silence about the Zika outbreak and harsh comments about American volunteers infected during the West African Ebola outbreak is
“not the kind of leadership we need in our next president.”
the question of his perspective on these issues has never been more dubious :lol than it is with Donald Trump.”
the administration was forced to repurpose almost $600 million (http://www.healio.com/family-medicine/infectious-diseases/news/online/%7Bb3f11849-e332-4c45-a5a8-6fd72e99457f%7D/senate-approves-11b-in-zika-funding-as-part-of-stopgap-spending-bill) in federal funds set aside for the Ebola outbreak when
Republicans rejected Obama’s request for $1.9 billion to fund the nation’s Zika response.
preparing the U.S. for pandemics requires proper funding and starts by battling disease outbreaks overseas.

But....good info. The warm weather/UV light theory is looking promising, and I think we have enough "circumstantial" evidence judging from the outbreak profiles in Texas, Australia, Florida, California, etc to at least infer transmission will slow down to manageable levels over the Summer. My problem with OAN reporting this is that the rubes who follow that shitshow of a station will take this information to mean that we "CAN OPEN RIGHT BACK UP. YEEEE HAW!" during the Summer. Nope. This means we'll just get a reprieve for 3 or 4 months, which we should devote to preparation for the incoming Fall/Winter wave. Sure, we can open up some, but we also need to be prepared to go back into hiding when cases start peaking again in the Fall.

Yes, it is.
"A clearer way of looking at death numbers, also courtesy of the excellent Our World in Data, is the daily trend of deaths per million. Here you get a good sense of the trajectories. All of the countries listed below, except Sweden, have full national lockdowns. And yet Sweden is roughly in the middle of the pack. This is quite remarkable in itself, when set against the dominant narrative that lockdowns are the only thing capable of ‘flattening’ these curves and preventing tragedies that are many times worse."

Keep checking that sweden curve. It is now about twice that of its neighbors.

Sadly, the death toll is on pace to exceed 100K quite quickly. Death plateaus seem to last a good month, with a 20 percent variation either way throughout. We'll probably be around 100K by mid-May.
And sadlyX2, this won't convince "the base" of much anything. Expect these deflections:
"This is a New York/East Coast problem."
- Yeah, and we're trying to prevent that "problem" from becoming a national problem.
"How many died OF Covid as opposed to WITH?"
-- The base doesn't understand that Covid turns livable co-morbidities into acute life threatening situations.
"They're fudging the stats! They're labelling probable Covid deaths as actual Covid deaths!"
-- Who cares? The only data point you need to see if something serious is going on is comparing a state's typical number of deaths per day/week from all causes and see how that number has increased over the pandemic. In the case of New York State, they average about 400-500 deaths per day from all causes, from car accidents to falling off a ladder to heart attacks. They've averaged 500 Covid deaths per day over the last month. And what's different about New York now vs. last year? Hmmm. I wonder.
"This is just an old people problem. Let us back to work!"
- A big chunk of the workforce is over 50 years old. 50 isn't a senior citizen yet, but 50+ year old Americans have a rap sheet of co-morbidities as long as your arm. So it isn't just an "old people" problem.

Until we implement a 30 day hard lock down, OR, a medical "cure" is invented the death count will increase.
& nobody on either side is willing to lock down hard. Not even close. They want to eat their cake and have it too.

Tough balancing act, Cub. I don't handwave the economy, either. But life>economy. And if we take care of our own, those supposed suicides, despair, ruin shouldn't happen. I personally think there's enough money out there to take care of everyone who needs it for a year, but "they" don't want to part with it. Need that extra Yacht or house in Paris.

Wrote that 3 weeks ago, feeling positive about how Texas, Cali, and Florida would fare due to pop density, warm weather, sunlight, or whatever. Many regions in that latitude band just aren't going crazy exponential. This doesn't mean we should let our guard down in these states, though. There's plenty of densely enough populated areas (LA, Houston, Miami) where a couple of super spreaders can make things bad in a hurry.
And this means nothing when Fall/Winter hit. But we have some windows of opportunity we need to take advantage of.

That model has a range. The 60K projected is just the median bound. The upper-bound is 130K. I think we'll be nearer to the upper bound based on the trends of how this virus seems to ride its plateau. Check out Italy. They hit 793 deaths on March 21st (their first big peak). Nearly a month later, they're still reporting daily deaths in excess of 500, about a 30 percent decrease. And they've collectively locked down harder than us.
Even if we average a 40 percent drop in daily deaths from here on out over the next 30 days, that'll put us at 80K deaths. And deaths just won't flatline to zero. It'll be a gradual descent. So over this month long gradual descent, we could easily see another 20K deaths.
The only factor that could keep us under 100K is if the New York situation "burns itself out" because we vastly underestimated the true case rate count. If it's by something like a factor of 50, that means 10 million have already been infected in NY, and hopefully many of those cases were mild. In this case, the virus will obviously have fewer "virgins" to infect and the death rate should fall like a rock.

US intel on threat of coronavirus shared with Israel and NATO in November: report
"The US knew":
Report says American intel on the threat of coronavirus was dismissed by President Trump
he smoking gun has arrived."
An Israeli news report on Thursday revealed that
the country was told in November by U.S. intelligence about the potential threat of the coronavirus—
warnings that were also made to NATO and to the White House—
a clear contradiction of Pentagon claims last week that no such report existed.
"The smoking gun has arrived," tweeted Joel Rubin, a former aide to the presidential campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
1251188815886200833
The information reportedly came from U.S. intelligence monitoring of internal Chinese communications that revealed the potential danger of the outbreak before it was publicly known.
The Times of Israel reported (https://www.timesofisrael.com/us-alerted-israel-nato-to-disease-outbreak-in-china-in-november-report/) that U.S. intelligence agencies were aware of the disease as early as the second week of November
and shared the information with President Donald Trump's White House, NATO, and Israel.
"The report was the result of analysis of wire and computer intercepts, coupled with satellite images.
It raised alarms because an out-of-control disease would pose a serious threat to U.S. forces in Asia—forces that depend on the NCMI's work.
And it paints a picture of an American government that
could have ramped up mitigation and containment efforts
far earlier to prepare for a crisis poised to come home."

90% of US COVID-19 deaths may have been prevented if social distancing began sooner: epidemiologists
If social distancing policies gone into effect two weeks earlier, many more would have been saved
The U.S. recorded its first thousand COVID-19 deaths between Feb. 26 and March 26.
It has reported more than 34,000 since then, or the equivalent of nearly a dozen 9/11 attacks in the span of three weeks.
epidemiologists estimated that 90% of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. might have been prevented if social distancing policies went into effect two weeks earlier.
If the policies were in place even one week earlier, on March 9, deaths could have been reduced by up to 60 percent, the the experts said.
the virus' logarithmic spread works both ways: possible exponential growth but also possible exponential reduction.
Kentucky issued social distancing policies March 26, but Tennessee waited until March 31.
As of last Friday, Kentucky had 1,693 confirmed cases (379 per million population) and Tennessee had 4,862 (712 per million).

Covid flu?
0.1% death rate with 50x the number of people having it, and it having been in the country for at least 2 months before we recorded a case?
antibody test results in silicon valley say, maybe. Lots of people didn't know they ever got it, and by extrapolation, it could be 50x the # of detected, tested cases.
https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/17/health/santa-clara-coronavirus-infections-study/index.html
Maybe in Queens or New Orleans. Most places have been locked down too long to have that kind of rate. Many are likely still vulnerable.

We're at 30k and around the peak. Unless the curve is highly asymmetrical. I don't see how we get to 130k.
Another problem with the Murray Model is that it basically stops counting at June 1st. I don't see how it's possible we'll be at 8 deaths per day by June? That's why I expect a lengthy gradual descent until August.
Keep in mind, I'm not "doomsdaying." 100K deaths over our first wave is actually "not bad" considering all the bungling early on. The early projections from the likes of Imperial College were forecasting a lot more deaths. And Fauci even put the number at 200K a couple of weeks ago.

Santa Clara was part of the group of the first counties in the USA to be locked down, since March 16th officially. The fact that this many people have the antibodies means it is likely a good percentage caught it before lockdown. Which is when Trump was saying we had very few cases. Thats just the truth because they are everywhere and they are very thorough.
Wa Po is great for Washington inside political stuff. Both of these outlets help pop the "deep state" intelligence gathering that was highly suspect and they got dirty on the Clinton Foundation. I think this country is just far too big for this not to be the exception to the rule. I definitely agree the infection count is probably higher just about everywhere, but not enough for there to be anti-body resistance in most of the population. I also don't feel confident in a lot of these anti-body tests considering many straight up aren't reliable and have had issues with false negatives and positives.

You don't need a majority of the population to get it/indicate antibodies without having died with the current death count to change the outlook from "Russian Roulette" to "2x seasonal flu". Just about 10-50x more than current tested positive.

It's pretty early to believe this is the peak once we reopen. The model breaks down once things reopen in the next weeks. If SARSCov2 is seasonal the peak will come in the winter unless there are early lockdowns. If it isn't then who knows what's going to happen? Will the stage 1 plan Trump unveiled be enough to keep from having huge spikes like we saw in New York, Detroit, and New Orleans? Will some places be able to move on to stage 2? Or will we see huge infection rates again in stage 1 and have to go into lockdown again? Just a ton of uncertainty going forward.

White House to give $19B in farmer aid
President Donald Trump on Friday announced a $19 billion economic rescue package for farmers and ranchers that will include sending out cash payments as well as buying farm products and redistributing them to food banks.
Trump has counted farmers and rural voters among his most solid supporters, and he directed Secretary Sonny Perdue last week to speed through assistance to the agriculture sector as producers increasingly bleed profits and start dumping goods like milk and fresh produce.
Support from the industry could be crucial to the president’s reelection hopes this November in key Midwestern swing states like Wisconsin and Michigan. Yet influential sectors, including producers of biofuels like ethanol, are frustrated that they were excluded from the program.
The stimulus plan is the latest in a long string of recent ad hoc relief efforts for the agricultural economy. Trump has pulled out the stops to bail out farmers and ranchers stung by his own trade war and biofuel policies, in addition to long-term economic headwinds.
“The program will include direct payments to farmers as well as mass purchases of dairy, meat and agricultural produce, to get that food to the people in need,” Trump said during a White House press briefing.

Red states may be facing a perfect storm of illness and death from COVID-19
experts say that they’re simply behind the curve of denser, more urban states
another reason to believe that red states are likely to be hit hard as the virus spreads: Many of them are leading the country in risk factors for severe illness and death from COVID-19.
17 of the 20 states with the highest rates of smoking are red. Two are swing states and one, North Carolina, has only become blue in the past couple of cycles.
Twelve of the 15 states with the highest self-reported rate of diabetes (https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/adults-with-diabetes/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Yes%22,%22sort%22:%22d esc%22%7D) are red.
Thirteen of the 15 states with the highest obesity rates (https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/adult-overweightobesity-rate-by-gender/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22All%20Adults%22,%22sor t%22:%22desc%22%7D) are as well.
Of the 15 states with the largest share of their populations reporting being in “fair” or “poor” health (https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/percent-of-adults-reporting-fair-or-poor-health-by-gender/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22All%20Adults%22,%22sor t%22:%22desc%22%7D), one is blue, two are swing states and the rest are solidly Republican.
Among the 15 states with the highest rates of death from heart disease (https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/number-of-deaths-due-to-diseases-of-the-heart-per-100000-population/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Heart%20Disease%20Deat h%20Rate%20per%20100,000%22,%22sort%22:%22desc%22% 7D), four are swing states but none are blue states.
“many rural doctors, leaders and health experts worry that…they will have fewer hospital beds, ventilators and nurses to handle the onslaught.” Of the 20 states with the highest rates of uninsured (https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/total-population/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Uninsured%22,%22sort%2 2:%22desc%22%7D), 16 are safely Republican.
eight of the 10 states with the highest rates of death from pneumonia and influenza in 2018 (https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/influenza-and-pneumonia-death-rate/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Influenza%20and%20Pneu monia%20Deaths%22,%22sort%22:%22desc%22%7D), the most recent year for which data are available, were heavily Republican.

I hope it stays lower. I really do.
The death toll in some counties exceeds 5% of cases. The problem is that the model is probably using garbage numbers, as they are keeping deaths in nursing homes secret. Like authoritarians everywhere.
Would you like to see an article about how state governments are trying to keep a lid on nursing home deaths?
In the end time will tell. Vastly too much uncertainty at the moment. Republicans will push to re-open too soon. If they do that, my guess remains the same. I think we are getting vastly overconfident. Viruses don't care about ideology. Reality has a way of punishing people who ignore it.

Dr. Oz Fears That Coronavirus Comments Could Hurt His Credibility as Expert on Magic Beans
https://media.newyorker.com/photos/5e9a21018813a500087ad820/master/w_2560%2Cc_limit/Borowitz-DrOz.jpg
NEW YORK —Dr. Oz is deeply concerned that his controversial comments about the coronavirus could damage his hard-earned credibility as an expert on magic beans, Dr. Oz confirmed on Friday.
“I’ve worked long and hard to establish myself as the world’s leading authority on the magical weight-loss powers of green-coffee-bean extract,” Oz said.
“It’s horrifying to think that my stature in the field of magic-beanology could vanish overnight, like unwanted pounds.”
Oz pleaded with viewers not to judge him based on a few unfortunate comments but,
rather, to consider his entire body of medical work,
including his pioneering research into the fat-burning superpowers of raspberry ketones.
“A few ill-considered remarks don’t change the fact that I’m the same Dr. Oz who recommended curing restless-leg syndrome by placing a bar of lavender soap under your sheets,” he said.
“And
should one slip of the tongue erase all the times I’ve promoted astrology, faith healing, and psychic communication with the dead?
I should hope not.”
But even as he defended his unimpeachable scientific record,
Oz acknowledged that the coronavirus controversy has left him badly shaken.
“In my darkest moments,
I wonder if people will ever believe me again when I tell them that umckaloabo-root extract cures the common cold,” he said.

Life Tabernacle Church Becomes Death Tabernacle Church After Defying Stay-At-Home Orders
God needs them to fight the Antichrist:
"Satan and a virus will not stop us," said the Reverend Tony Spell, 42, pastor of the evangelical Life Tabernacle Church near Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
He expects a crowd of more than 2,000 to gather in worship at his megachurch on Sunday.
"God will shield us from all harm and sickness," Spell said in an interview.
"We are not afraid.
We are called by God to stand against the Antichrist creeping into America's borders.
We will spread the Gospel."
Alas, as it turns out, Spell may have been a little off in his calculations
78-year-old Harold Orillion, an usher at Life Tabernacle church died this Wednesday, and according to the coroner's report, (https://www.wafb.com/2020/04/16/member-life-tabernacle-church-dies-covid-records-say/) the causes of death were "acute respiratory distress syndrome, 2nd pneumonia, 2nd COVID-19."
Pastor Tony, however, claims that the coroner is lying. :lol
Orllion isn't the only one of Spell's parishioners to get infected:
Jeffrey Wittenbrink, the lawyer defending him in his criminal case has it as well.
In fact, he gave an interview to The Daily Beast (https://www.thedailybeast.com/member-of-tony-spells-life-tabernacle-church-in-baton-rouge-dies-from-coronavirus-another-member-in-icu) from his hospital bed, while on oxygen support.
In an interview with The Daily Beast from his hospital bed on Thursday, he said he felt bad for potentially infecting others :lol
"These restrictions are out of control," :lol
"Some governors think these emergency powers give them carte blanche...
We should not give up our God-given :lol rights :lol so easily."
song, which he dedicated to all of his followers having a bad time during the pandemic, is called "Please Take Me Jesus." :lol

:lol shoe is on the other foot now, eh?

I wish these people who want to go work so bad or "open up" their state sign a waiver forfeiting any type of medical assistance if they fall ill. Why should I and my colleagues risk our family's and our health and well-being for people who don't think of anyone else but themselves.

Coronavirus Advice From Abroad: 7 Lessons America’s Governors Should Not Ignore as They Reopen Their Economies
We spoke to frontline experts from around the globe and have compiled a list of recommendations for reopening U.S. states.
Their consensus?
It’s tough to find policies that
simultaneously save lives and livelihoods.
While they differ on the details, their views formed a startlingly united consensus of what’s needed:
Massive, ongoing testing to detect where the disease is spreading,
a real-time ability to trace contacts of those infected and isolate them,
a willingness of people to wear masks in crowded public spaces,
reserves of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other equipment for hospital workers to handle any surge in cases,
reliable, easily administered blood tests to find out the number of people who have been infected. If they work well, such tests could eventually be used to identify people with immunity who could work at higher-risk jobs.
We also asked American experts
whether states can meet all or most of these benchmarks.
Their answers coalesced around a single point:
None of you (the states) are close to being ready.
https://www.propublica.org/article/coronavirus-advice-from-abroad-7-lessons-americas-governors-should-not-ignore-as-they-reopen-their-economies (https://www.propublica.org/article/coronavirus-advice-from-abroad-7-lessons-americas-governors-should-not-ignore-as-they-reopen-their-economies)
The Capitalists, the oligarchy, see NO VALUE in human life, so will push the states HARD to get people back to work and THEIR own wealth back top shape, to pocketing, hoarding 95% of all gains in national wealth.
100Ks more diseased?
10Ks more dead"
The Capitalists, the oligarchy, DON'T FUCKING CARE,
like they already don't fucking care about 100Ks of Americans who have committed "suicides of despair" from neoliberalism and austerity imposed on the by the oligarchy.
You made the jump yourself tbh.

‘Who takes a victory lap on piles of corpses?’:
Trump blasted as ‘sociopathic monster’ for bragging about 65,000 deaths
President Donald Trump is being blasted for his apparent bragging about and celebrating “only” 60,000 to 65,000 coronavirus deaths.
When you look at the possible deaths at 2.2 million people – and it could have very well been that, it could have been more,” the president continued, as he continued to pat himself on the back.
“Frankly I’ve been looking at numbers where it could have been higher than that. 2.2 million people dying. If you figure we lost 500,000, maybe 600,000 in the Civil War, 2.2 million people, a minimum if we did nothing would have been 1.6, if you cut that in half, you’re talking about 800,000 [to] 900,000 – a million people dying.”
“But we did a lot of work, :lol
if it was successful they had between 100,000 and 220,000 to 240,000 on the upside, and
I think we’ll be substantially, hopefully below the ‘100’ number, and I think right now we’re headed probably around ’60,’ maybe 65,000.”
“I always say, ‘One is too many,'” Trump claimed. A Google search (https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&client=safari&rls=en&sxsrf=ALeKk00H8stra1NQxENH-K52qeAuS5P3mQ%3A1587167563059&ei=S0GaXsySA7qtytMPxvSuoAg&q=%22I+always+say+one+is+too+many%22+Trump&oq=%22I+always+say+one+is+too+many%22+Trump&gs_lcp=CgZwc3ktYWIQAzIECCMQJ1C8LliMXGCIXmgBcAB4AIA BcIgB8AOSAQMzLjKYAQCgAQGqAQdnd3Mtd2l6&sclient=psy-ab&ved=0ahUKEwiM5K320_DoAhW6lnIEHUa6C4QQ4dUDCAs&uact=5) turns up no statement of Trump having ever said that.

FiveThirtyEight article on the complex relationship between COVID-19 testing and case counts.
Tl;dr version
But if you’re not accounting for testing patterns, it can throw your conclusions entirely out of whack. You don’t just run the risk of being a little bit wrong: Your analysis could be off by an order of magnitude. Or even worse, you might be led in the opposite direction of what is actually happening. A country where the case count is increasing because it’s doing more testing, for instance, might actually be getting its epidemic under control. Alternatively, in a country where the reported number of new cases is declining, the situation could actually be getting worse, either because its system is too overwhelmed to do adequate testing or because it’s ramping down on testing for PR reasons.https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/coronavirus-case-counts-are-meaningless/

That’s what I’ve been monitoring all along. The data is not available in all states or locales though. It may not give you any where near infected/recovered data but its the most meaningful in terms of where we are healthcare-wise. This is one bitch of a virus, false negatives on diagnosis, false positives, false negatives on antibodies for immunity, questions if antibodies truly protect and if so for how long.
My bet is treatment will be here before meaningful and useful data on testing. Remdesivir is expected to report preliminary results in late April and possibly the 4,000 patient two arm trila divide between moderate and severely effected patients in May. If those trials bear similar results to the two smaller reported sets of data, mass production should ramp up as fast as possible. I can’t see the worldwide backlog of required reagents for effective testing being resolved quickly.

there is also a log between positive cases and hospitalization and deaths, because C19 doesn't get bad and kill quickly
USA is running now at nearly 2K deaths/day, at least 60K deaths / month.
USA is in the clear, so let's all get back to work.

It's always about principle when the right is in power, but about results and intent when it's the left. Of course, intent is hard to prove especially on a forum. Therefore all the hand waving over Trump's principles while ignoring anything positive from his administration just puts a dollar store price tag on your own opinion.

The right sleeps in the bed they made when it comes to this. When they were not in power, it's always about the moral high ground and principle (a good example is the evils of deficit spending).
