Today I lost another work colleague and friend to this disease. And I don't understand why people keep arguing over this. I'm boots on the ground--I see this crap all day almost everyday. And what I see here is a bunch of "experts" who because the CDC said this, or I read the literature, I saw it on TV/internet, etc I know better blah blah blah. What you hear and what you see is not always what is happening but the truth is always somewhere in the middle. Should you be alarmed, concerned, worried, scared whatever? If you value your life and those of your own, then yes. Treat this as a threat. Play it safe. Follow standard precautions, social distance, stay home if you can... that's how you can help/protect yourself.
If you think this is the flu or a hoax, at least have the common decency to wear a mask out in public because some of us who don't agree with your stance are obligated to do our jobs--taking care of the sick, keeping the stores open, responding to emergencies, etc.
Also, I don't know about all of Texas, but the facilities/hospitals that I frequent are nearing capacity with COVID patients and I'm afraid that we're about to get crushed. I hope that isn't the case but I'm not feeling very optimistic. Hopefully, we can all find some common ground here--so we can get out of this. I'm tired.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Thank you for putting your life on the life to try to save our lives even if not all of us seem to value your work nor safety sadly.
Yep. Any healthcare worker exposing himself to this day in and day out to care for people at risk of dying is a hero. We should all be able to agree with that.

You cant even read.
Now you are restating what I said.
A histogram is not a continuum, its data comes in discrete chunks (already stated and you disagreed an now you are implying agreement), otherwise they would not present it as such. When they draw a line between columns in the histogram they are actually assuming time is a continuum but they really just want to blur one day into another to get an overall outlook and therefore must do some sort of averaging. You dont know anything about graphs and what they mean.

Now I dont know what the fck you are even saying, I said absolutely nothing about January. You are just answering or restating your own views and pretending I commented on them.

I'm ex military (served 13 months in Afghanistan) now I'm here doing this. I'm sorry but I really hate when people say this--it's like we've been given the OK to sacrifice our lives or those of our loved ones for people we don't know or will ever meet. We do what we do because it's our job, we took an oath, and we want to help but no one wants to die. :lol
If people want to show gratitude, help us out so we too can be safe and have a long life.

“Just that number is being misinterpreted and, quite frankly, we’re concerned that there is a level of alarm in the community that is unwarranted right now,” Boom said.

Aside from 0-17, these charts line up pretty evenly with the population % of each of these age groups.

That seems like a side note. Yes it's interesting and a good eye but it does not explain why the elderly death rate would increase because the infection rate of lower age people increased. How are the older people dying at a higher rate if they're not in getting infected at a higher rate?

I wish you and your coworkers well, and am sorry for what is about to happen.Texas hospital CEO: COVID inpatient count 'misinterpreted,' level of alarm 'unwarranted'

ealth officials in Texas are logging every single COVID-19-positive hospital patient in the state as a COVID-19 hospitalization, even if the patients themselves are admitted seeking treatment for something other than the coronavirus.

That policy may be serving to artificially inflate what ostensibly seems like a significant COVID-19 surge in the state. Texas has lately been the focal point of national anxiety over concerns that a "second wave" of the coronavirus has begun there after the state began reopening nearly two months ago.

COVID-19 hospitalizations there have been on a steady upward track for about the last two weeks, per the state's coronavirus dashboard, which on Thursday recorded about 4,400 coronavirus hospitalizations in the state. But at least part of that trend may be due to liberal coding policies by state officials.

Lindsey Rosales, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of State Health Services, confirmed to Just the News this week that the state is categorizing every inpatient in the state with a positive COVID-19 test as a COVID-19 hospitalization.

"The number of hospitalized patients includes patients with a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19 even if the person is admitted to the hospital for a different reason," Rosales said.

Asked if inpatients in the state are tested for COVID-19 whenever they arrive for treatment, Rosales said, "Hospitals set their own protocols for determining when and if to test patients for COVID-19."

She said the state does not keep track of the patients hospitalized with the coronavirus versus those hospitalized specifically because of it.

Texas Health Resources, one of the state's largest hospital systems, says on its website that its "patients [are] tested before most procedures." Elective surgeries and other medical procedures in Texas have gone up in recent weeks as the state has gradually re-opened following its lockdown.

Amid worry, major hospital leaders stress calm

Queries to multiple Texas hospital officials this week went unanswered. But leaders of several major hospitals in Houston this week urged the public to remain calm, suggesting that the extent of the outbreak has been overstated.

At a virtual press conference on Thursday, the chief executives of Houston Methodist, Memorial Hermann Health System, St. Luke’s Health, and Texas Children’s hospitals stated that their hospitals are well-prepared to handle an even greater increase in patients than that which has emerged over the past few weeks.

The number of hospitalizations are "being misinterpreted," said Houston Methodist CEO Marc Boom, "and, quite frankly, we’re concerned that there is a level of alarm in the community that is unwarranted right now."

"We do have the capacity to care for many more patients, and have lots of fluidity and ability to manage," Boom said.

He pointed out that his hospital one year ago was at 95% ICU capacity, similar to the numbers the hospital is seeing today. "It is completely normal for us to have ICU capacities that run in the 80s and 90s," he said. "That's how all hospitals operate."

He noted that around 25% of ICU patients are COVID-19-positive. But the hospital "[has] many levers in our ability to adjust our ICU," he said, claiming that the hospital capacity regularly reported by the media is "base" capacity rather than surge capacity.

Texas Children's Hospital CEO Mark Wallace added that his facility has "a lot of capacity."

"We have the ability to take care of all of the Houstonians that need a critical care environment, that need to be operated on, or acute care," Wallace said.

"There is not a scenario, in my opinion, where the demand for our beds ... would eclipse our capability," he continued. "I cannot imagine that. I just cannot."

As of Thursday afternoon, Texas had around 13,000 open hospital beds statewide.

So the TSA idea is that as long as hospitals have capacity for C19 victims, all is OK. Go ahead engage in risky behavior.

"When you get sick as a dog with C19, need hospitalization, no fear, hospitals are not full" (yet)Looks like it. The thing is with the kind of growth we're seeing in cases, hospitals and governments have to project weeks into the future. Half the time it looks like they're overreacting when they're simply preparing for a likely scenario (preparing for more patients) and the other half it looks like they react too late to situations that have already changed (today's closing of just bars).

I posted a quote from L.A. County Public Health Director. Pay attentionthat's one person's opinion, it flatters your priors so you naturally agree.

Emphasizing one factor only is gross simplification of the situation at best. At worst it's a misleading citation of the truth. If you don't also credit the context of reopening, you're just being dishonest.

Trump has gifted the cowardly lion courage so he can call for the deaths of the elderly.

Cherp seconded this:

people not wearing masks are being irresponsible

.........

Trump pretty much makes everyone lie either for him or to get along working for him. That TSA doesn't give a shit about Trump's lies or the thousands of Americans who dies because of Trump tell you all you need to know about him.

.........

I want him to not kill any more Americans.

Nobel-prize winning scientists, provided Stanford biophysicist and Nobel Laureate Michael Levitt with a platform to vent his fury over the global scientific community’s flawed response to the Covid-19 pandemic, as he saw it.

In particular, he condemned Imperial College’s Neil Ferguson for failing to respond to his emails at the height of the crisis. He said that a flawed response had caused hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of suffering and damage, that had disproportionately affected a younger generation, and which would not substantially alter the ultimate death toll.

There are a lot of non-epidemiologists working on modeling covid-19. I don't see that as a problem. I would judge a model on how well it predicts reality. In that regard, Neil Ferguson's model was terrible.

People have no problem repeatedly citing the rt.live model by the founder of Instagram.

The CDC surrenders:

COVID-19 spreading too rapidly to be brought under control

principal deputy director of the CDC, Dr. Anne Schuchat.

“We’re not in the situation of New Zealand or Singapore or Korea

where a new case is rapidly identified and

all the contacts are traced and

people are isolated who are sick and people who are exposed are quarantined and

they can keep things under control,” said Schuchat.

“We have way too much virus across the country for that right now, so it’s very discouraging.”

Testing czar says coronavirus surge is straining testing capacity

Brett Giroir, the coronavirus testing czar, said Wednesday that the United States' coronavirus testing capacity is at risk of being overwhelmed in some states by a surge in new infections and increased surveillance efforts in nursing homes and jails.

“It is absolutely correct that some labs across the country are reaching or near capacity,” Giroir said. “Recent data from several states indicate rising infections and now an uptick in hospitalizations and death, even as other states and the great majority of counties are maintaining a low infection burden."

The percentage of people testing positive has spiked in recent days in several states — including Arizona, Florida and Texas. That's a sign that the virus is spreading rapidly.

Trump Admin Scales Back Mandate That Health Insurers Cover COVID Tests

the Trump administration has moved to place limits on who insurers are required to cover COVID-19 tests for.

CMS said that insurers no longer have to cover COVID-19 testing when employers mandate a test before an employee can return to work, or

when someone is tested as part of a public health surveillance program.

the Trump administration has failed to put the weight of the federal government behind scaling up widespread COVID-19 testing, handing that task to state and local governments with minimal contributions (https://talkingpointsmemo.com/muckraker/trump-covid-testing-pharmacy-hhs) from the feds.

as indicative of a bungled federal response to the pandemic — and, specifically, to providing testing capacity — leaving CMS to sort out questions of health insurance policy that are ill-suited to the public health needs of a national pandemic.

Through two laws,

Congress mandated at the start of the outbreak that health insurers would fully cover COVID-19 tests — with no copays.

But the mandate came with no additional government support attached, requiring insurance companies to foot the bill for at least part of the national testing plan.

“The statue says insurance companies have to pay, period — you can debate whether you think its good policy, but that’s the statute,”

“But if you have to get a test to go back to work, or are subject to community-wide testing, or you don’t have any symptoms

— you want to get a test because maybe you want your kid to get a test to go to summer camp or you’re traveling and you want to get a test before you go —

insurance companies would not be required to cover in those circumstances,”

Is COVID-19 Testing Free? One Very Important Thing To Know

There are usually three steps you need to go through to get a test result, each carries a separate charge to you or your insurance.

Most of the time, you will need an initial screening which could be done virtually via telemedicine.
If determined appropriate, you will be directed to a clinic or drive through where you will be swabbed or get blood drawn.
Your sample will be sent to a lab, where it gets analyzed to determine if you are positive or negative

Because there are three steps, there are three separate charges that will occur. According to major insurance carriers' websites, the screening and clinic visit are free, but

the lab cost depends on your insurance policy.

We did an independent study to verify this and found

a wide range of scenarios where the patient was charge $100 by the lab or up to $2300.

Such doom & gloom in this thread. Let's try to be optimistic.

Assuming actual cases is 20x confirmed cases and deaths is reasonably accurate, we only have ~500k deaths to go before the US can move on from the covid era.

So cheer up people.
