this is what systemic public health failure looks like
In a press briefing (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2021/08/31/press-briefing-by-white-house-covid-19-response-team-and-public-health-officials-53/) last week, the White House announced that as part of its Covid-19 surge response team, it has deployed over 350 EMTs, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to provide emergency medical care.
The response teams are also working with 18 states “pulling (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2021/08/31/press-briefing-by-white-house-covid-19-response-team-and-public-health-officials-53/) in personnel, resources, supplies, and expertise from across the federal government, including from Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Department of Defense, and the Veterans Affairs to address state specific needs.”

Tennessee: fucked
On Tuesday, the Tennessee Department of Health reported nearly 3,700 people were being treated for COVID-19 in the state's hospitals. At least 67 children are currently hospitalized because of the virus.
Local health leaders have stressed they're unsure when those numbers will begin to decline.
"At this point, to be quite frank, we really don't know how high that number's going to go," University of Tennessee Medical Center's Dr. James Shamiyeh said on Thursday. "The situation is accelerating and we are becoming increasingly concerned."

It is striking how some folks' commitment to universal health care wanes when it involves someone whom they think might have voted for Trump.
We don't deny smokers treatment for COPD or drunk drivers trauma care when they get in a wreck, nor is doing so generally denounced.

Does the Vaccine Matter?
https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2009/11/does-the-vaccine-matter/307723/
those were the days when questioning vaccines were mainstream :lol
WHY, THEN, HAS the federal government stockpiled millions of doses of antivirals, at a cost of several billion dollars? And why are physicians being encouraged to hand out prescriptions to large numbers of people, without sound evidence that the drugs will help? The short answer may be that public-health officials feel they must offer something, and these drugs are the only possible remedies at hand. “I have to agree with the critics the antiviral question is not cut-and-dried,” says Fauci. “But [these drugs are] the best we have.” The CDC’s Nancy Cox also acknowledges that the science is not as sound as she might like, but the government still recommends their use. And as with vaccines, she considers additional randomized placebo-controlled trials of the antiviral drugs to be “unethical” and thus out of the question.
This is the curious state of debate about the government’s two main weapons in the fight against pandemic flu. At first, government officials declare that both vaccines and drugs are effective. When faced with contrary evidence, the adherents acknowledge that the science is not as crisp as they might wish. Then, in response to calls for placebo-controlled trials, which would provide clear results one way or the other, the proponents say such studies would deprive patients of vaccines and drugs that have already been deemed effective. “We can’t just let people die,” says Cox.

Florida bends the knee.
A Florida judge ruled against Gov. Ron Desantis on Wednesday and allowed schools in the state to mandate face-masks while the case is appealed at a higher level.
The ruling from Second Circuit Judge John Cooper, effective immediately, means the state of Florida must stop enforcement of banning mask mandates -- which ends sanctions against several school districts who have implemented such mandates.
The decision comes amid heated showdowns between the state and some local school districts, which have insisted on requiring students to wear masks amid a surge of Covid-19 infections.

@RG: in epidemiology, success looks like an overreaction.
that hospitals were not overwhelmed by COVID patients last year might just as well be an argument for countermeasures as against them. suggesting countermeasures were overblown because hospitals weren't overwhelmed is akin to arguing birth control isn't necessary because your gf didn't get pregnant last time you rawdogged her.

no surprise here, COVID is wrecking elder care
Nursing homes were closing before the pandemic: more than 550 (https://leadingage.org/sites/default/files/Nursing%20Home%20Closures%20and%20Trends%202020.pd f)from June 2015 to June 2019, more shuttering each year than the previous one, affected by staffing shortages, high costs and a decline in occupancy.
But the coronavirus pandemic has hit nursing homes particularly hard, killing more than 186,000 residents and staff (https://www.aarp.org/ppi/issues/caregiving/info-2020/nursing-home-covid-dashboard.html) and pushing the industry into what experts have warned is its “worst financial crisis in history.” Now, only one in four (https://19thnews.org/2021/07/nursing-homes-crisis/) of the country’s 15,600 nursing homes is confident it can survive the coming months, according to a recent survey.
If large numbers of nursing homes close, it’d be “a nightmare,” said Kimberly Posey, a gerontological nurse practitioner and assistant professor at Texas Christian University. Around 1.2 million people (https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/number-of-nursing-facility-residents/?currentTimeframe=0&sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22 :%22asc%22%7D) live in nursing homes, the majority of whom require some level of care.
“I really don’t know where they would go,” Posey said.

so my brother works at a warehouse that had a casual employee with covid who caught it from somewhere but all employees was sent home after a week for quarantine 14 days and get tested (all return negative, but still have to get another test on the 13th day for more accuracy)...all family members in the same household has to be home isolated for 14 days also...what i dont get is isolation starts from date virus was exposed, not date everyone was sent home which was a week later..
now im at home today (i work in food manufacturing, my sister also works at a large retailer that supplies office stationary also isolating at home, my wife a age care worker also staying home...) this is fkn bullshit, even though we can access welfare for no income, but again its bullshit...and derails most of the familys plan was to all go get our first vac jab, now have to resceduled, and we also have a public holiday coming up which will not get paid also...i have to use any accrual annual/sick leave/rdo before i can apply for the covid supplement pay...fk and i just became a full time employee still on probation for 3 months already, have to waste those accrual entitlement paid days...

That's not the point though. Biden is just trying to give himself political cover because they know what's coming this fall/winter. Laying the groundwork for "It's not my fault, I tried" is all he cares about. There are plenty of things he could do that would actually make a difference but they would all hurt the economy and he's just as scared of that.

Obviously thus why I said economic (and political) reasons. But I truly believe these lunatics (corporations and politicians) actually believe their bullshit that somehow boosting their way out of the next year will work and they will prevail in midterms. Complete lunacy. Thus why CDC chief even said "we dont have the data about boosters but we have hope"
Its a shitshow of gigantic proportions because all they are doing at minimum is causing chaos in citizenry for at least the next year. And at worst obliterating any remaining confidence in vaccines. You cant vaccinate yourself out of this one.

The numerous times trump lied in saying covid would disappear:
You know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat — as the heat comes in. Typically, that will go away in April.
Feb 10, 2020
China is working very, very hard. I have spoken to President Xi, and they’re working very hard. And if you know anything about him, I think he’ll be in pretty good shape. They’re — they’ve had a rough patch, and I think right now they have it — it looks like they’re getting it under control more and more. They’re getting it more and more under control. So I think that’s a problem that’s going to go away.
Feb 25, 2020
…when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done.
Feb 26, 2020
It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear. And from our shores, we — you know, it could get worse before it gets better. It could maybe go away. We’ll see what happens. Nobody really knows.
Feb 27, 2020
I don’t think people are panicking. I said last night — we did an interview on Fox last night, a town hall. I think it was very good. And I said, ‘Calm. You have to be calm.’ It’ll go away.
March 6, 2020
We’re prepared, and we’re doing a great job with it. And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away.
March 10, 2020
You know, we need a little a separation until such time as this goes away. It’s going to go away. It’s going to go away.
March 12, 2020
Stay calm. It will go away. You know it — you know it is going away, and it will go away. And we’re going to have a great victory.
March 30, 2020
It’s going to go away, hopefully at the end of the month. And, if not, hopefully it will be soon after that.
March 31, 2020
It is going to go away. It is going away.
April 3, 2020
It did go — it will go away.
April 7, 2020
But a lot of movement and a lot of progress has been made in a vaccine. But I think what happens is it’s going to go away. This is going to go away. And whether it comes back in a modified form in the fall, we’ll be able to handle it.
April 28, 2020
It’s going to go. It’s going to leave. It’s going to be gone. It’s going to be eradicated. And it might take longer. It might be in smaller sections. It’ll be — it won’t be what we had. And we also learned a lot.
April 29, 2020
And I think we’re doing very well on the vaccines but, with or without a vaccine, it’s going to pass, and we’re going to be back to normal.
May 5, 2020
Because, you know, this virus is going to disappear. It’s a question of when. Will it come back in a small way? Will it come back in a fairly large way? But we know how to deal with it now much better. You know, nobody knew anything about it, initially. Now we know we can put out fires.
May 6, 2020
Well, I feel about vaccines like I feel about tests. This is going to go away without a vaccine. It’s going to go away, and it’s — we’re not going to see it again, hopefully, after a period of time. You may have some — some flare-ups and I guess, you know, I would expect that. Sometime in the fall, you’ll have flare-ups maybe. Maybe not. But according to what a lot of people say, you probably will. We’ll be able to put them out. You may have some flare-ups next year, but eventually, it’s going to be gone. I mean, it’s going to be gone.
May 8, 2020
We think we’re going to have a vaccine in the pretty near future. And if we do, we’re going to really be a big step ahead. And if we don’t, we’re going to be like so many other cases, where you had a problem come in, it’ll go away — at some point, it’ll go away. It may flare up, and it may not flare up. We’ll have to see what happens.
May 15, 2020
So I think that’s — but even without that [a vaccine or therapeutics], you know, at some point this stuff goes away and it’s going away.
June 15, 2020
I always say, even without it [a vaccine], it goes away.
June 16, 2020
if you look, the numbers are very minuscule compared to what it was. It’s dying out.
June 17, 2020
But I will tell you, we’re very close to a vaccine, and we’re very close to therapeutics, really good therapeutics. And — but even without that — I don’t even like to talk about that, because it’s fading away. It’s going to fade away.
June 17, 2020
And it is dying out. The numbers are starting to get very good.
June 18, 2020
And I think we are going to be very good with the coronavirus. I think that, at some point, that’s going to sort of just disappear, I hope.
July 1, 2020
I’ll be right eventually. I will be right eventually. You know I said, ‘It’s going to disappear.’ I’ll say it again. It’s going to disappear, and I’ll be right.
July 19, 2020
Well, the virus will disappear. It will disappear.
July 21, 2020
We’re gonna beat it, yeah. We’re going to beat it. And with time, you’re going to be it — time. You know, I say, it’s going to disappear. And they say, ‘Oh, that’s terrible.’ He said — well, it’s true. I mean, it’s going to disappear. Before it disappears, I think we can knock it out before it disappears.
July 22, 2020
This thing’s going away. It will go away like things go away…
August 5, 2020
It’s going away. No, it’ll go away like things go away. Absolutely. No question in my mind. It will go away. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
August 5, 2020
And we’re getting them [manufacturing jobs] even in a pandemic — which is disappearing; it’s going to disappear.
August 7, 2020
And frankly, you know, we’ve had a tremendous — a tremendous market, you and I have talked about that, the stock market. Think of it, we’re almost back to where we were, and we’re still in the pandemic, which will be going away, as I say, it’ll be going away. And they scream, how you can you say that? I said, because it’s gonna be going away.
August 15, 2020
And as soon as the plague is gone — we have vaccines coming, we have therapeutics coming, and it’s going to be gone. And it’s gonna be gone soon.
August 17, 2020
And the China Plague will fade.
August 17, 2020
It’s all coming back so fast and you’ll see it, and the pandemic goes away. The vaccines are going to be, I believe, announced very soon.
August 24, 2020
Well, once you get to a certain number — you know, we use the word herd, right. Once you get to a certain number, it’s going to go away.
August 31, 2020
It is gonna disappear. It’s gonna disappear. I still say it.
September 15, 2020
But it’s going to disappear. It is disappearing. And vaccines are going to help, and the therapeutics are going to help a lot.
October 10, 2020
The vaccine will end the pandemic. But it’s ending anyway. I mean, they go crazy when I say it. It’s going to peter out and it’s going to end. But we’re going to help the end and we’re gonna make it a lot faster with the vaccine and with the therapeutics and frankly with the cures.
October 15, 2020
Even without the vaccine, the pandemic’s going to end. It’s gonna run its course. It’s gonna end. They’ll go crazy. He said ‘without the vaccine’ — watch, it’ll be a headline tomorrow. These people are crazy. No, it’s running its course.

So abortion is not a personal medical decision. Its under the purview of the government.

I've always said I think private businesses should be able to decide their own vaccine policies, and that goes both ways. So I don't like it.
If you're going to mandate the vaccine, mandate the vaccine. Don't put the onus on businesses.
I would rather see this done through pressure in other areas - Higher premiums, hospital access restrictions, vaccine requirements for large events, etc. This feels like a half-assed and passive approach.

It's not that easy. There are guidlines as to who qualifies as an employee or contractor. I think these are IRS rules and I don't think the majority can just move from empolyee to contractor.
But regardless even if they could, I think any benefits are gone at that point. No health insurance, no retirement benefits, etc.

A good start would be that hospitals are required to leave a certain % of their ICU beds open for non-COVID emergencies, with exceptions made for COVID emergencies involving a vaccinated person.

A good start would be that hospitals are required to leave a certain % of their ICU beds open for non-COVID emergencies, with exceptions made for COVID emergencies involving a vaccinated person.
Generally I'm all for the rights of the unvaccinated to kill themselves and each other, but steps need to be taken to prevent them from exhausting all of the resources from others.probably already happening in places like Idaho, Hawaii and OK that have declared crisis standards of care.
a number of other states are getting close to that threshold.

You can fix 90% of this problem by requiring vaccination proof before collecting federal benefits, tbh...

Contractors may get higher rates in general. But those are contractors who often have more desirable skills than standard employees. In your scenario, you're talking about traditional employees who are so valuable that the company is going to give them the option to covert to contractor AND pay them more? Not to mention the headache of traditional employees understanding that they have to be accountable for their share of taxes. And the company potentially having two large groups of people doing the same job and having to pay them separately?

I mean, the reality too is that if you're a subcontractor working for a Fortune 500 company, you don't really have leverage.
If the company says it won't do business with unvaccinated people, it's actually very cheap for the company to drop a subcontractor off.
There's no labor law issues, there's no compensation required, so mandating this on contractors is very easy for a large company.

We're way past any argument that contradicts vaccines being overwhelmingly effective at tangibly reducing death, hospitalization, time to recovery, etc from this disease.
That's not an opinion, it's supported by reality. It might be more or less effective on different people and virus variants, but vis a vis completely unvaccinated people in the grand scheme, there's no comparison.
In that context, and with very few exceptions, 'doing the right thing' can be summed up as being a responsible member of society.
I don't have a problem with people disagreeing either, up until that disagreement turns into a drag in the same society I live in, and starts to affect me directly. At that point giving a pass/ignoring it isn't an option anymore.

It's like Bowie -The Alamo- the new one...they prop him up in that bed, set a single shot in each hand, he cock's em...with his namesake close.
It's like -Drums Along the Mohawk- when they fort up, set the cannon just inside the front gate, and load it with powder and nails, what not. Then raise up the board holding the gate shut and move out of the way. KABOOM!!! Blasts hair all over creation.
It's like -The Searchers- when The Duke catches up to Scar and scalps that red fuck.
It's like in -Red Dawn- the old one when Harry Dean gathers his son's close and implores them such:::
