So here is the 2nd official study of pt outcomes in China. This was a study of 1099 patients (1st study I linked to was only 44 patients)
https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2002032
tldr:
5% were admitted to ICU
2.3% required invasive mechanical ventilation
1.4% Died
"Since patients who were mildly ill and who did not seek medical attention were not included in our study, the case fatality rate in a real-world scenario might be even lower."

I think we see a deadly pandemic that wipes out hundreds of millions of people (potentially billions) in the next 50 years. This just isn’t it.It doesn't have to be that bad to matter. It just has to be bad enough to jam up héalth care delivery.
We're not out of the woods yet. If the mortality rate is only .5%, that's five times deadlier than the seasonal flu, which kills 60,000 yearly in the US.
If it's 1%-2% that's pretty drastic for a pathogen that's more contagious than the average bug.

I disagree. I think this one is scary enough that we will see a revolution in the our ability to quickly respond to new viruses with rapid vaccines, antivirals, etc.
H1n1, SARS, MERS, Ebola all sparked some initial investment but funding (both private & public) dried up as soon as public interest waned. This time seems different.

8:50 am: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accuses China of setting back coronavirus prevention efforts
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused China of putting the rest of the world “behind the curve” in trying to contain the coronavirus outbreak. Pompeo said it has proven “incredibly frustrating” to work with the Chinese government around obtaining data on the coronavirus, “which will ultimately be the solution to both getting the vaccine and attacking this risk.”
“Remember, this is the Wuhan coronavirus that’s caused this, and the information that we got at the front end of this thing wasn’t perfect and has led us now to a place where much of the challenge we face today has put us behind the curve,” Pompeo said in an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” —Stankiewicz

Explaining that might have better prepared the public for "scary looking numbers" that are more or less inevitable at this point.

If that's the vaccine sitting frozen at Baylor. They are pitching that it "could" work against Covid-19 with some modification, basically trying to get money to restart their project. Problem is that it's a traditional vaccine and would likely be years to market. That's why nobody is is throwing money at them now.

CDC will not authorize testing anyone that falls outside of their timeline. This applies to with person's with lingering suspicious mild to moderate illness who were in (or on) well publicized hotspots shortly before they became known hotspots. Even if they've been tested for literally every other possible viral/bacterial illness and been shown negative.
Supposedly, within a week the test kits will be available for private physicians to order on their own.

Just felt like a kind of rough cold (and I had already gotten this year's flu shot). :lol

A lot of cases weebo is sighting may be conventional flu which hit harder than usual this year.
But...
France has 613 confirmed cases of coronavirus, the head of the public health service, Jerome Salomon, said on Friday, which is an increase of 190 compared to a day earlier. During a press briefing, he added the death toll from the disease was still at nine and that 39 persons were in intensive care. —Reuters
That’s a pretty high percent of confirmed cases dead or in intensive care. But again who knows how many undiagnostic and not ill of very mildly ill there are.
Tested neg- for the flu...hence the admitting med dx I posted...

I was hoping to calm some nerves here....there's no reason to panic but be vigilant...most of you have been on point with the info you're sharing...this is my own clinical opinion...this is worse than the yearly flu BUT for our most vulnerable populations...healthy adults tend to get symptoms but are so mild than many don't bother to go see their PCP

I totally understand your concern...if you feel like you might be coming down with something its best to stay away until confirmed that you're fine...from what I've gathered through all the trainings/meetings Ive attended the last couple of weeks is that we're expecting 60-80% of adults at some point get this infection...but take that number with a grain of salt...the health department is a joke

It's here and its been here since early January....at least in my part of Texas. I have access to medical records because of my job title....there's a lot of cases here in Texas that have gone unreported...so far from what I have seen the elderly have been hit the hardest....we're suspecting a lot of them + for COVID-19 with resulting acute/diffuse PE resulting in O2 supplementation or intubation with mechanical ventilation in ~ 25-30% of cases...the med dx being used by hospitals is acute PE/respiratory distress but all the s/s point to COVID-19/SARS-2...I would post proof but I would be in violation of HIPPA
Do you know if suspected serious cases are being given any off label treatments such as higher dose oseltamivir, chloroquine, etc.
Or is it a waiting for confirmation/guidance situation?

Isn't a rule of thumb that if mucus is clear it's usually just allergies, if it's yellow or green it's often a bacterial or viral infection? Every time cedar pollen first hits in mass I'm blowing a ton of clear shit out of sinuses. Or is that bullshit?

One slide in a leaked presentation for US hospitals reveals that they're preparing for millions of hospitalizations as the outbreak unfolds
Hospitals are confronting the rising threat of the novel coronavirus in the US.
The spread of the coronavirus outbreak in the US could push the healthcare system to its limits.
In a February webinar presentation hosted by the American Hospital Association, an expert laid out "best guess" estimates about how many Americans could be impacted.
He projected that there could be as many as 96 million cases in the US, 4.8 million hospitalizations, and 480,000 deaths associated with the novel coronavirus.

I don't know how a person is supposed distinguish between those symptoms and common allergies
My dad had open heart surgery on Xmas Eve. For the first week of recovery, my brother and sister and uncle and stepmom were there. For the second week, everyone went home and my stepmom had to go back to work -- she's a therapist, it was ethical for her. Her patients were starting to decompensate.
So I went out, it was January and I was beset with cedar fever, or so I thought. Perhaps it was at the beginning, then it turned into a bad cold.
So I sat across the room from my dad in the rehab hospital, with a mask on all day, blowing my nose in the bathroom 25 times a day, washing my hands a 50 times day, watching CNBC, reading, chatting, going to PT and OT sessions, watching police procedurals into the early evening for five days, then helped him get settled at home after the discharge.
I was scared to death I'd give him my cold. So glad that didn't happen, it easily could have happened.

Trump made a damning admission about
why he wants to keep passengers on a cruise ship with coronavirus
Trash did just that when he revealed he wanted to keep passengers on a cruise ship exposed to Covid-19, the new coronavirus, quarantined on the vessel —
not for public safety reasons or to reduce the spread of the disease —
but so that they wouldn’t count as American cases of the illness.
“I (it's all about I) like the numbers being where they are,” Trump said. “
I (it's all about I)don’t need to have the numbers double because of one ship.”
This is, of course, exactly what critics — including me — have been saying.
Trump isn’t worried about the public health crisis itself,
but the way it is reported and the impact it has on his public standing.

Here are 7 ridiculous and disturbing moments from Trump’s visit to the CDC

Forgot his girdle? The Truth hangs out
1. Trump arrived wearing a campaign hat to the CDC.
2. Trump lied and said anyone who wants to get tested for the virus can be tested.
3. Trump compared the tests to the conduct that got him impeached.
4. Trump cited Fox News for data on the virus, rather than the administration he leads.
5. Trump went off on a tangent about the ratings for his Fox News town hall.
6. Robert Redfield, the director of the CDC, said the “most important thing” he wanted to say was praise of Trump.
Redfield deep throating: "I want to thank you, for your decisive leadership and helping us put public health first. " :lol :lol
7. Trump lashed out at Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, who is dealing with a major outbreak in the state.
"that Gov is a snake, OK? Inslee,”

“This effort will help see whether there is broader spread than we have been able to detect so far.” :lol
But there were two major problems:
The cities weren’t ready, :lol
and the tests didn’t work. :lol
In fact, when Azar’s team had sent his prepared remarks to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention before delivery, the agency pushed back and urged him to soften his language.
State health departments had not yet been informed of the plans :lol
— and were certain to be upset by them — and
the coronavirus test kits contained a faulty component that caused a spike in inconclusive results.
Azar announced the plans anyway, :lol sure, calm people down, protect Trash's reelection

the difference is that 10x more infected people die from covid-19.
The mortality rate within the US is expected to be between 0.1% to 1% when it’s all said and done. The numbers are skewed right now because of third world shitholes that can’t properly medicate people.

Yeah I’ll concede that as a difference. My point is that this should not be something that results in people wearing face masks and latex gloves everywhere they go.

An official from Italy’s Lombardy region, which is the worst-hit part of the country, said 257 people in the area have died, up from 154 a day ago. Nationwide, the country reported 366 deaths, up from 233 on Saturday.
Italian officials imposed a virtual lockdown on its wealthiest and most populous region, which includes the financial capital Milan, as part of tough new measures to try to contain the coronavirus outbreak. The new rules include telling people not to enter or leave Lombardy, which is home to some 10 million people. The virus has infected at least 5,883 people in Italy, according to Johns Hopkins University. —Feuer
12:25 pm: ‘Life can’t stop,’ Surgeon General says, as presidential campaigns move forward
In response to a question about whether presidential candidates should stop traveling amid the outbreak, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams told CNN’s “State of the Union” that “life can’t stop.” He added that the containment measures China has taken to curb the spread of the virus are “draconian.”
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders also appeared on the show and said his campaign is moving forward despite the outbreak. His campaign is in touch with public health professionals ahead of every rally, he said. “We will not endanger the health of anybody in this country,” he said. “We are watching this thing very, very carefully.”
In response to a question about whether he should slow down his travel, he said, “Well, in the best of all possible worlds, maybe.” —Feuer

South Korea has tested more than 140,000 people for the new coronavirus and confirmed more than 6,000 cases. Its fatality rate is around 0.6%.
This suggests that, as many health experts have predicted, the virus' fatality rate seems to decrease as more cases are reported.
That's because more widespread testing leads more mild cases to be included in the count.

The only miss step by our government thus far has been a bad batch of reagents. Even if that had not happened it wouldn't change anything. The government cannot stop that which cannot be stopped. The good thing is that this virus is mutating. They've identified the first strain as "L" which was more deadly, the second strain less so and is the one spreading more widely. So it's following the normal natural selection process for a new endemic virus. Mutating to become less lethal to it's host.
They say that process was reversed with the Spanish Flu because of WWI. That's why the first wave was basically a normal flu but the 2nd wave it killed primarily young healthy people.

I thought I read its mutation was considerably slower than traditional flu. With a much less lethal strain I would guess it should be likely to infect more than the initial projections of 40-70% of the world getting it?
Also, is this second strain likely to give one antibodies to resist the first strain?

(https://twitter.com/justinhendrix/status/1236754541854494720)106 people in New York have confirmed cases of Coronavirus.
But- "As of Saturday only about 120 people in New York City had been tested for the virus.
And it has been become clear that the new coronavirus was spreading faster than testing was increasing.
================
Trump is trying to hold the number of coronavirus cases down by not providing an adequate number of test kits so that people can be tested.
If people can’t be tested, they also can’t be added to the number of confirmed cases in the United States.
The administration is trying to cover up theirbungled coronavirus response by underreporting the number of people who test positive for the virus.
There is no reason for the CDC not to immediately give testing kits to any state that requests them.
If the United States doesn’t provide an adequate number of testing kits, it could be facing a public health catastrophe.
The CDC has been politicized and is doing Trump’s bidding.
At a time when America needs a rapid response, governors can’t get coronavirus test kits.

Trump was warned of a pandemic ‘that could lead to massive rates of death’ by the intel director he fired
a document from the office the Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats’
2019 “Worldwide Threat Assessment, (https://www.dni.gov/files/ODNI/documents/2019-ATA-SFR---SSCI.pdf)” which specifically warns of a disease like the coronavirus.
Coates explained:
“the United States and the world will remain vulnerable to the next flu pandemic or large-scale outbreak of a contagious disease that
could lead to massive rates of death and disability,
severely affect the world economy,
strain international resources, and
increase calls on the United States for support.”
It has become clear that neither Trump nor his administration took the warning seriously.

Notable quotes
Human intervention may have placed more severe selective pressure on the L type, which might be more aggressive and spread more quickly. On the other hand, the S type, which is evolutionarily older and less aggressive, might have increased in relative frequency due to relatively weaker selective pressure.
Among the 27 viruses isolated from Wuhan, 26 (96.3%) were L type, and only 1
(3.7%) was S type. However, among the other 73 viruses isolated outside Wuhan, 45 (61.6%)
were L type, and 28 (38.4%) were S type.
This is just from wiki on the 1918 pandemic
This increased severity has been attributed to the circumstances of the First World War.[97] In civilian life, natural selection favors a mild strain. Those who get very ill stay home, and those mildly ill continue with their lives, preferentially spreading the mild strain. In the trenches, natural selection was reversed. Soldiers with a mild strain stayed where they were, while the severely ill were sent on crowded trains to crowded field hospitals, spreading the deadlier virus. The second wave began, and the flu quickly spread around the world again. Consequently, during modern pandemics, health officials pay attention when the virus reaches places with social upheaval (looking for deadlier strains of the virus).[98]
I don't think anyone knows if having one strain gives immunity to the other. Those reports of people being re-infected within weeks of being cleared makes me think not.
I was feeling pretty good about this not being as bad as first thought but today Italy reported 133 deaths and is putting basically all of Northern Italy (a third of their population) under military quarantine.
Honestly don't know what to think now. Maybe this shit is leaked out of that fucking lab and the govt's know it.

From another message board:
I'm a doctor and an Infectious Diseases Specialist. I've been at this for more than 20 years seeing sick patients on a daily basis. I have worked in inner city hospitals and in the poorest slums of Africa. HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis,TB, SARS, Measles, Shingles, Whooping cough, Diphtheria...there is little I haven't been exposed to in my profession. And with notable exception of SARS, very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or downright scared.
I am not scared of Covid-19. I am concerned about the implications of a novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to find new footholds in different soil. I am rightly concerned for the welfare of those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge. But I am not scared of Covid-19.
What I am scared about is the loss of reason and wave of fear that has induced the masses of society into a spellbinding spiral of panic, stockpiling obscene quantities of anything that could fill a bomb shelter adequately in a post-apocalyptic world. I am scared of the N95 masks that are stolen from hospitals and urgent care clinics where they are actually needed for front line healthcare providers and instead are being donned in airports, malls, and coffee lounges, perpetuating even more fear and suspicion of others. I am scared that our hospitals will be overwhelmed with anyone who thinks they " probably don't have it but may as well get checked out no matter what because you just never know..." and those with heart failure, emphysema, pneumonia and strokes will pay the price for overfilled ER waiting rooms with only so many doctors and nurses to assess.
I am scared that travel restrictions will become so far reaching that weddings will be canceled, graduations missed and family reunions will not materialize. And well, even that big party called the Olympic Games...that could be kyboshed too. Can you even
imagine?
I'm scared those same epidemic fears will limit trade, harm partnerships in multiple sectors, business and otherwise and ultimately culminate in a global recession.
But mostly, I'm scared about what message we are telling our kids when faced with a threat. Instead of reason, rationality, openmindedness and altruism, we are telling them to panic, be fearful, suspicious, reactionary and self-interested.
Covid-19 is nowhere near over. It will be coming to a city, a hospital, a friend, even a family member near you at some point. Expect it. Stop waiting to be surprised further. The fact is the virus itself will not likely do much harm when it arrives. But our own behaviors and "fight for yourself above all else" attitude could prove disastrous.
I implore you all. Temper fear with reason, panic with patience and uncertainty with education. We have an opportunity to learn a great deal about health hygiene and limiting the spread of innumerable transmissible diseases in our society. Let's meet this challenge together in the best spirit of compassion for others, patience, and above all, an unfailing effort to seek truth, facts and knowledge as opposed to conjecture, speculation and catastrophizing.
Facts not fear. Clean hands. Open hearts.
Our children will thank us for it.
#washurhands #geturflushot #respect #patiencenotpanic
All true, but when was the last time the masses were talked out of mass hysteria?
Also, we know that countermeasures work. Not so much to prevent overall deaths as to spread them out so that the incidence of cases does not overwhelm the system.

Not my field, but I somehow doubt people will worry that we overreacted when we have thousands if not tens of thousands dead form this thing in a couple of weeks/months. Think of all the shit we changed after 9/11 and we're going to eclipse that death toll by orders of magnitudes.

The thing about denying this science vs denying climate change is that we're not looking at decades to see the results. We're looking at a month or two. So sure, go ahead and call out people for causing panic and overreacting but when it becomes obvious that march was already too late for an overreaction lets just hope it doesn't come by way of your family being in an ICU. I mean why trust world reknown epidemiologists when you have Dr. Drew?

for those of you living in the fantasy that only Old ppl need hospital:
The 32-year-old physician’s assistant, a non-smoker with no underlying health conditions, believes he contracted it while attending a medical conference in Times Square last weekend, saying the coronavirus spread quickly to both his lungs.
“The virus is everything. Dirarrhea, watery eyes, shortness of breath, chest pain, you name it. High fever,” he said. “Every day is getting worse.”
“It happened so quick,” he said.
Cai said he has hope because his doctors are communicating with doctors in China on a daily basis to talk about his treatment.

We have a vaccine and medicine for the regular flu AND we know that it's seasonal.
This Coronavirus is just starting to be unleashed and we can't even test fast enough to know who has it and who doesn't.

lol still not getting it
Yes flu kills a lot but when a new virus evolves everything is different. Our societies do not have a basic immunity against a new virus. Without countermeasures many more people will get sick during the first, second and third wave of a new virus onslaught than during a normal flu season. Health care staff will also get infected and must quarantine itself. Some health care workers will probably die. Hospitals will become overwhelmed and the health care system will break down just as it did in Wuhan, China. The breakdown of the health care system also leads to a much larger number of virus death than under a working health care system.

In the meantime let's hope the antiviral remdesivir clinical trials the CDC is conducting are successful for helping the seriously ill, maybe China will come out with real data on how chloroquine is working on the larger trial. Chloroquine would be ideal for less wealthy nations if it works, they aren't going to be able to afford remdesivir (intravenous only).

There is no way this doesn't blow up into a worse situation than we're seeing in Italy. Italy offers three days sick leave immediately and then 20 days at half wage after that if you're still sick. While in the US restaurant, fast food, gas station, grocery, WalMart, etc workers are going to be working sick to survive.
