Seeing a lot of this sentiment on Wingnut twitter. "Our freedumbs." What's happening now isn't unprecedented in American history. We responded to the Spanish Flu the exact same way, allowing states and municipalities to issue quarantine/stay-at-home orders per their discretion. Example, during the Spanish Flu, St. Louis locked down, while Philly did the "freedumbs" thing. Results.

All pandemics follow the same path. There's no "conspiracy" or "insidious Democrat/Communist plot to take over Murrica." These twats just can't handle that the fat and happy life has to be on hold for a bit. What fuckin' babies. All you have to do is stay home and sit on your ass.
They are rightfully concerned that the government will use this time to make permanent changes. You can see that motivation in politicians very clearly when they push their irrelevant agenda.

I read that herd immunity only comes into play after 50%+ of the population has gotten and recovered from the disease. That'd be ~150 million americans... so, really can't rely on that at this time.
If that's the case, we might have to force it. There's 100 million Americans aged <24 https://www.indexmundi.com/united_states/age_structure.html
The virus is benign to that age group like 99.8 percent of the time (and I expect that number to drop even more once the all the asymptomatic cases are counted). Even the Italy data found that 99.8 percent of seniors without any pre-existing conditions survived. So basically, we'll have to throw these demographics to the proverbial lions. That said, don't condone this until an anti-viral treatment is found, and I think we'll find it sooner rather than later.

Read that something like 98% of the country is on stay at home orders.
I think it's time to make that mandatory nation wide.
The stay at home orders vary wildly tho. Where I live it’s basically a local government CYA that’s mostly toothless.

Make no mistake, mainstream Dems are sneaky shitheels, but the republican party and "the base" operates on a completely different level of shitheel. They'll hold back "progress" back in this regard per usual. I'm already seeing them start to hedge on wingnut twitter. First, it was, "nothing but a little flu. Only 30 deaths. Why are we freakin out!" Now it's, "Eh, 8000 deaths, but we have to ask how many died from Covid vs. with Covid?" So no matter the death toll, they have a minimizing excuse and thus will deflect to their conspiracy nonsense.
On the other hand, I can see mainstream Dems shutting down debate of the China problem with cries of "racism." So neither the healthcare/preparedness issue will be solved (cuz socialism) or the China problem be solved (cuz racism).
Yeah, Trump has handled this poorly, but there were huge issues that helped it seed so fast, and those were there because of both parties' complacency. The reason why the nation's safety net is so bad isn't because the GOP hates helping poor people -- that's basically their purpose. It's because the Dems have consistently been content to promote elites who are willing to sell economic liberalism for social gains. That's who we get so many people who worship these billionaire oligarchs who economically seem to come from the Gilded Age but just happen to say the right things about LGBTs, minorities and women. They've surrendered manufacture workers to the GOP because of a false equivalency between populism and fascism. Some of this is just the Dems having their hearts in the right place "in a perfect world" but being way to amenable to compromising with a GOP that rarely seems to make concessions. But there's also just the greater marginalization of economic liberalism that comes from having too many people entrenched in power for too long and a party desperate to court money to keep up with the GOP in a post Citizens United world.
I don't think the right wing needs more expansion. They have their clear issues with the truth and with being too inclined to change their argument to not have to confront the bigger issues with their world-views. They will forever be a weird union of planters and yeomanry that seems like it should have never formed but still remains locked together somehow.

I think the hope is that we find at least a treatment relatively soon. That would reduce drastically the number of deaths and at least would make more sense then.

Fauci dropped the ball there, but Fauci isn't the only expert in town. Trump was warned by the HHS director on Jan. 3rd. Like I said earlier in this thread, a good manager appraises competence, delegates accordingly, and (adding here) listens to multiple points of view. Fauci saying that on Jan. 21st doesn't absolve Trump selling this as a little flu into early March.

i'd love to see the full interview instead of a one minute bit, but even then, just because he said the american people dont have to worry about it "right now" (the day the first person tested positive) that doesnt mean preventative measures shouldn't have been taking place, and testing been rapidly deployed to any affected areas.

Interesting blurb from the WoM Italy page:
Italy: the real number of COVID-19 cases in the country could be 5,000,0000 (compared to the 119,827 confirmed ones) according to a study which polled people with symptoms who have not been tested, and up to 10,000,000 or even 20,0000,000 after taking into account asymptomatic cases, according to Carlo La Vecchia, a Professor of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology at the Statale di Milano University.
The number of deaths could also be underestimated by 3/4 (in Italy as well as in other countries) [source], meaning that the real number of deaths in Italy could be around 60,000.
If these estimates were true, the mortality rate from COVID-19 would be much lower (around 25 times less) than the case fatality rate based solely on laboratory-confirmed cases and deaths, since it would be underestimating cases (the denominator) by a factor of about 1/100 and deaths by a factor of 1/4.
Grain of salt here is that it relies on polling, but hopefully it points to some truth, meaning the CFR would be massively, massively lower (.03, which correlates with Iceland's CFR, who've done randomized testing).

We actually learned about human to human contagion at the tail end of January. By January 23rd China implemented the Hubei lockdowns.
Heck, this administration's only saving grace so far was shutting down travel from China in January 27th.

Of course it was a good move in hindsight, and for people that always complain that this administration doesn't get credit, well, they certainly do get credit for that. You just can't use that as a shield for the other 1000 fuckups, especially when they're still ongoing.

We already knew about the need for ventilators back in February.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-23/coronavirus-patients-long-ventilator-stays-strain-hospitals
https://www.pennlive.com/news/2020/02/pa-ready-for-coronavirus-but-supply-of-resources-such-as-breathing-ventilators-could-become-strained.html
Here's another warning from early February, from a doctor:
https://www.statnews.com/2020/02/07/hospitals-harnessing-resources-brace-spike-coronavirus-cases/
Much of that work revolves around hospitals planning for what Biddinger called the “four S’s” of a surge in patients amid an outbreak: supplies, staff, space, and the system that governs all of them.
They need to review their inventory of supplies, including ventilators, oxygen tanks, and the respirator masks that health workers might need to wear to care for infected patients. They need to plan for how to protect other patients in the hospital, particularly those with weak immune systems. They need to review screening procedures and the proper way to put on protective gear. And they need to educate everyone — from the front desk employees in the ER to the workers who take out the trash in patient rooms — in those protocols.
Great to pretend now that we didn't know, just not true.

We'll be fine, just have to take it on the chin for about a year or more, Cub. The unemployment thing was always going to happen, shutdown or no shutdown, because businesses that rely on some sort of crowd (bars, restaurants, clubs, theaters, casinos, etc) were going to take a hit regardless. People aren't going to want to go out and risk catching this bug. And yes, it's contagious. We don't have herd immunity plus vaccine. Pretty much every American will get it at some point (could take 10 years). We don't collectively fear the flu like this because we have vaccine, anti-viral treatments, and a degree of herd immunity.
But in a year, that herd immunity will be built up enough (say, 30 million Americans), the vaccine will soon follow, and there will be proven anti-virals that work, and THEN this will basically be the flu (I do believe mortality is around flu levels when all the data gets in).
Damn, that's grim business, Midst.

Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price spoke strongly against the May 20 extension of the COVID-19 Disaster Declaration approved by a vote of the commissioner's court Friday morning.
Price said the long extension of the disaster declaration is an unreasonable blow to small businesses that are shuttered by the social distancing requirements.
“We’re going to just kill off an entire community in the next 60 days.” Price said. “Pick our poison. We either go with COVID-19 and die or we just economically die.”

"Life (while we still have it) is a fragile and uncertain endeavor, a gift of God, which is what gives its glory, its beauty, and its value. We should, of course, seek to protect the vulnerable, but not at the cost of all our liberty. 'Give me liberty,' said Patrick Henry (another founder, though these days a neglected one), 'or give me death!' Few would go that far today, but he had a point."

You should post all those vids from Dems calling for masks and ventilators back in Feb. Oh, they were still reeling from retarded impeachment fiasco.
All I have to do is post videos of the one guy who should have been paying attention in the briefs where they were talking about such things, saying "its all under control".
The experts were all saying the same things. The pandemic wargaming said the same things. The white house task force before it was disbanded by Bolton/Trump said that.
The first thing Republicans did upon hearing about the danger was sell stock, then go out in public and ape the Death Cult Party line. "This is fine"

Yeah unless you're requiring supplemental oxygen, just treat the fever at home and self quarantine, especially if you're young. There aren't enough resources right now to test everybody.

It's true that we have no idea how many people have had the virus with mild or no symptoms at all. Regardless, there is no path to get society back functioning until we stop (or greatly reduce) the 1k+ deaths a day, unless you're suggesting that it'll just burn through everybody no matter what we do and just be gone once everybody has built an immunity to it.

Also interesting is the comment about the different "strains" might affect mortality. West coast got a specific "strain" early while New York broke out from the Manhattan lawyer that brought it from Italy.
I say "strain" because the different mutations aren't enough to be a totally new virus as far as your body is concerned, unlike what influenza does every year. So getting one protects you from getting the other "strain". I least that's how I read it.

Yep, there's a big upside and big downside to this. The only clue we have is from the Iceland study, which found most cases are mild. They have the largest mix of randomized testing in the world, and the CFR is about .03 there (flu can be anywhere from .01 to .1). But since Iceland is so small, their sample isn't too big (around 1100), but in terms of per capita, they've tested a larger portion of their population than anyone else. From all that I've read, I think the "big upside" is more likely. There's probably millions who've had it, recovered, and never got tested. And many more millions extant cases that aren't severe enough to require treatment. So to ball park it, hopefully the numerator/denominator is something like 15million/15K deaths (accounting for Covid deaths never recorded). That would equate to a .01 CFR.

Every year, the flu runs near the apex of epidemic level and routinely spikes above that at the height of flu season. Covid, even if it winds up being about as bad as the flu, will stack on top of the regular flu, and push that epidemic level far beyond our healthcare capacity. So yeah, compare it to the flu. That means it's fuckin' bad.

I keep hearing this too, but I don't think we're at a point where we can definitely conclude that. This is somewhat what the 'strains' theory is trying to fill the gap on, to explain how Louisiana of all places got it so incredibly bad.

The distinctive US policy of undertesting for COVID-19 continues
A coronavirus test made by Abbott Laboratories and introduced with considerable fanfare by President Donald Trump in a Rose Garden news conference this week is giving state and local health officials very little added capacity to perform speedy tests needed to control the COVID-19 pandemic.
“That’s a whole new ballgame,” Trump said. “I want to thank Abbott Labs for the incredible work they’ve done. They’ve been working around-the-clock.”
Yet a document circulated among officials at the Department of Health and Human Services and the Federal Emergency Management Agency this week shows that state and local public health labs were set to receive a total of only 5,500 coronavirus tests from the giant manufacturer of medical devices, diagnostics and drugs, according to emails obtained by Kaiser Health News.
That number falls well short of the “about 500,000 capacity of Abbott tests that” Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, said were in the states and were “not being utilized.” https://khn.org/news/trump-touted-abbotts-quick-covid-19-test-hhs-document-shows-only-5500-are-on-way-for-entire-u-s/

New York was critically late in implementing any type of lockdown/social distancing effort. That, combined with their population density, average age (top 10 oldest in the US), weather, and mass transit use, it was just the perfect recipe for this thing to go nuclear there.
Louisiana was "densely populated" for Mardi Gras, so that could explain why spread is taking off there. I also looked up how the state deals with the flu, and they seem to get hit particularly hard by it vs. other Southern states. Don't know if it's because of their healthcare infrastructure, lifestyle (smoking, beetus, obesity, etc), and such, but flu death rates are correlating pretty closely with how hard a region gets hit. Ex. Two weeks ago I made that flu/covid thread, and found New York's flu infection rate to be 7.5x higher than both Cali and Texas. NY's death rate is 10x than Cali and 35x higher than Texas.

Scrah, you got any studies about the virus and if it stays in the body long term similar to a plethora of viruses that attack once every few years ala chicken Pox turning into shingles, Cold Sore herpes etc. I'm actually curious if this virus can stay dormant for years similar to other viruses and attack when things like stress comes into factor. Worst part is that unlike, koriwhats herpers this covid19 is deadly and isn't just a minor skin infection with the only possibility of death is through natural birth delivery during an outbreak...And unlike many other viruses, COVID19 is extremely contagious.
We can be looking at multiple waves of corona if this is the case

Don't have studies like that, but it is a coronavirus, so the experts I've read don't expect this behave differently than other coronaviruses (like the cold virus) in that regard.

Population density. New York City has 26k people per sq mile, while Los Angeles has 3700 per square mile. New York also uses mass transit way more and is located in a cooler climate. I've looked at the flu infection rates for both states, and New York's infection rate is 7.5x higher than California's. New York has many factors working against it.

There was a study in 04 that showed that the cold flu can lay dormant. scary honestly because aysmptomatic people can just carry it and spread whenever/

As far as different strains, this scientist sheds light.

But then Louisiana isn't on the climate band. Neither is Iceland, IIRC.
I'm not stating you're wrong, far from it. It's the same thing I was telling Darrin earlier, there's a plethora of reasons that make sense (climate, strains, density) but there isn't necessarily strong evidence at this time that we have a clear and specific pattern.

Louisiana, for what seems to be unknown reasons, gets hit pretty hard by the flu. I think looking at how regions handle the flu is probably the best insight we're going to get on predicting how hard a region will get hit for the time being.

At the high end, yes. At the low end, minimum 700.
The way I'm projecting has both areas combined averaging about 110 deaths per day, with maybe 250 at the high end. I guess we can both agree we hope my math is right.
Good news is we're at the low-ish end of my NY/NJ prediction

I gave them Italy's growth rate, too.
The growth rate for Italy's case count was 60 percent over that 7 day period (3500 to 5700 average). If New York has a 60 percent growth rate during the week after their inflection point, we can expect an average daily case count of 8000 with a peak of 9400.
Their CFR went from .9 to 3.1 over this time. I held out hope NY would handle it like Germany (1 percent CFR).

They're close to "stabilizing". It takes awhile to reach the peak, when you hit it, it sustains for a couple of weeks, each day feeling like a week. But NY/NJ is a few days off from that peak, if they can hold the fort their hospitals will hold up and avoid a worst case catastrophe if this thing was more deadly

You can still play golf.
You can still go to the beach.
Or shop for groceries,
get takeout from a restaurant,
pick up medicine,
see a doctor,
exercise outdoors, and
go to church.
You can even, in many instances, go to work.
So many loopholes reside in Gov. Brian Kemp’s statewide shelter-at-home order that
many Georgians spent Friday in a state of confusion and disarray,
trying to determine what is — and isn’t — allowed as the state combats the coronavirus pandemic.
Some questioned whether the exceptions undermine the lockdown’s effectiveness.

Why Taiwan's Coronavirus Response Is Among The Best Globally
Why does Taiwan have less than 400 confirmed cases of Covid-19? Taiwan's experience with the 2003 SARS outbreak "helped many parts of the region react faster to the current coronavirus outbreak and take the danger more seriously (https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/04/asia/taiwan-coronavirus-response-who-intl-hnk/index.html) than in other parts of the world," reports CNN, "both at a governmental and societal level, with border controls and the wearing of face masks quickly becoming routine as early as January (https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/01/asia/coronavirus-mask-messaging-intl-hnk/index.html) in many areas."
Their article also notes that Taiwan "has a world-class health care system, with universal coverage," which drew praise in new report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2762689?guestAccessKey=2a3c6994-9e10-4a0b-9f32-cc2fb55b61a5&utm_source=For_The_Media&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ftm_links&utm_content=tfl&utm_term=030320): "Taiwan rapidly produced and implemented a list of at least 124 action items (https://cdn.jamanetwork.com/ama/content_public/journal/jama/0/jvp200035supp1_prod.pdf?Expires=2147483647&Signature=bIZCLS7ZLWTJd~U~H40JgiEGdFb3ggVUJpBvJ7Kd ANK7HgK1zaj4uWHvqweGym1nWfO~nXt9Y5i1vX79pF7zjjqfzm JAy3udTdpVVZQe07xnQIPcBMXLwZ5XjgTO8yKFXVIpxsXhrmOu 8sGSpKiEmQ86ZCKfOTar7fMAGmUCtjiYVFwf31K3REWAA-r3hZyoZpqz3QKpVgpsRpF9fV9thQCq0~yvbvRKTH4PcoB~CZgm XH7rpVb6bILXQn5zBCphf6pyLAa4zIebUEKfCdCYdSdi9LeIEU sesqsYpNWgHJcr4K1LC0hFlst0RHQz-vZ7I-OvrX~5jel6zjjtuDQzjQ__&Key-Pair-Id=APKAIE5G5CRDK6RD3PGA) in the past five weeks to protect public health," report co-author Jason Wang, a Taiwanese doctor and associate professor of pediatrics at Stanford Medicine, said in a statement (https://healthpolicy.fsi.stanford.edu/news/how-taiwan-used-big-data-transparency-central-command-protect-its-people-coronavirus). "The policies and actions go beyond border control because they recognized that that wasn't enough." This was while other countries were still debating whether to take action. In a study conducted in January (https://systems.jhu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Gardner-JHU_nCoV-Modeling-Report_Jan-26.pdf), Johns Hopkins University said Taiwan was one of the most at-risk areas outside of mainland China -- owing to its close proximity, ties and transport links.
Among those early decisive measures was the decision to ban travel from many parts of China, stop cruise ships docking at the island's ports, and introduce strict punishments for anyone found breaching home quarantine orders. In addition, Taiwanese officials also moved to ramp up domestic face-mask production to ensure the local supply, rolled out island-wide testing for coronavirus -- including re-testing people who had previously unexplained pneumonia -- and announced new punishments for spreading disinformation about the virus.
"Given the continual spread of Covid-19 around the world, understanding the action items that were implemented quickly in Taiwan, and the effectiveness of these actions in preventing a large-scale epidemic, may be instructive for other countries," Wang and his co-authors wrote.... Taiwan is in such a strong position now that, after weeks of banning the export of face masks in order to ensure the domestic supply, the government said Wednesday (https://focustaiwan.tw/politics/202004010014) that it would donate 10 million masks to the United States, Italy, Spain and nine other European countries, as well as smaller nations who have diplomatic ties with the island.

Why Taiwan's Coronavirus Response Is Among The Best Globally
Taiwan and some other countries have not spent the last 40+ years defunding, destaffing its govt into dysfunctionality, while the official Repug propaganda strategy was
"Government IS the problem"
drown the govt in a bathtub
... which is what the oligarchy paid Repug whores to do,
as the feckless Dems complied in silence (or actively like Bill Clinton)
compounded the Macho Rugged Individualism "fuck govt, fuck taxes" myth so beloved by low-wage, low-ed, overweight/obese un-rugged Americans.
The oligarchy/Repugs have actually made America ungovernable and dysfunctional.

Odd this is the one thing to finally ruffle Cub's feathers. Dale must feel deep shame deep down about his love for Trump and emotional infidelity to Katie Girl. He can't help it though - nothing comes before Trump and stickin' it to the libs.
Still, it hurts him because he knows Katie deserves better, but - just like he'd never side against Trump - he'll never admit to his failure to give Katie his heart and soul. Nuh uh. That belongs to Donald.

‘That would be a false statement’: Dr. Fauci knocks down claim virus is ‘under control’
https://www.rawstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Brennan_fauci2.jpg
“This is going to be a bad week,” Fauci explained to CBS News host Margarett Brennan.
“We’re going to continue to see an escalation.
We should also hope that within a week, maybe a little bit more,
we should start to see a flattening out of the curve.” WTF

He's been shaky ever since he put that 100k-240k death count in the scrolls. That was a moment, turned into a tell. & he knelt. Not as big a shot as he'd advertised.
ADDENDUM:::And the old man put them on-the-spot that day, broad daylight. Made EVERYBODY on that dais own those #'s. Only He, the old man owned them. The doctors fidgeted it & played grab ass with 'em after they'd been cited. Not ---45---...he stood the gaffe.

Louisiana pastor grilled on CNN for plan to
pack 27 buses full of worshipers and
haul them to church during COVID-19 crisis
https://www.rawstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/blackwell_spell.jpg
Life Tabernacle Church pastor Tony Spell said he was ignoring advice from local officials
“This morning, yes, sir, 10:00 AM.
We will actually run our buses.
We have 27 buses that we cover in a 50-mile radius of our city.
We bring people into the house of God,
feed them natural food and spiritual food ?????
“Last Sunday we had 1,800 in attendance.
This Sunday with the fear that’s been propagated into the hearts of my people, :lol
it may have had an adverse effect with more people than last week,”

Dr Anthony Fauci was the man behind the AIDS/HIV hoax epidemic back in the 80's under the Reagan administration. Don't believe a single word that man has to say.
