We've known about the high rate of COVID-19 reinfection in Manaus for a month or two, I don't know why we keep pretending what we see happening elsewhere won't happen to us.
this is why we are vaccinating people who have already had Covid with the same double dose procedure as those who are “clean” This is assuming that these really are re-infections in Brazil after somewhere around a year. The article goes through a number of possibilities.
And it may become a yearly procedure just like the flu. With the exception that it is a far more infectious virus so that vaccination is really important.

It becomes even more important to get vaccinated when people like derp and Kori will not.
People like this are aiding the so-called big Pharma vaccine machine.

Absolutely agree.
This habit should probably never go away, especially for older folks who want to fly for a vacation.
So many people get other non Covid crap after a vacation after being in airports and on an airplane. There are some public places that a mask is very important.
I had a friend at a fast food to go ask for her money back after she heard a younger employee remark "no more masks" and take it off. Businesses will find this out. But bars and stuff... probably not. At my work nothing has changed. Its basically become common courtesy.
We will see.

believe it or not, this pull quote out about *long COVID* is hardly the scariest thing in this Kaiser Health News story about autoimmune conditions incidental to COVID-19.
webpage is chockablock with links to the studies and so forth.
“Long haulers” suffer from a wide range of symptoms, including debilitating fatigue, shortness of breath, cough, chest pain and joint pain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/long-term-effects.html#:~:text=The%20most%20commonly%20repor ted%20long,Joint%20pain%E2%80%A2%20Chest%20pain). Other patients experience depression, muscle pain, headaches, intermittent fevers, heart palpitations and problems with concentration and memory, known as brain fog.
Less commonly, some patients develop an inflammation of the heart muscle, abnormalities in their lung function, kidney issues, rashes, hair loss, smell and taste problems, sleep issues and anxiety.

This was very nice.
Only thing I would have added (and I know its a cram so they might have thought it best to leave it out) is at a little after the 10 min mark he discussed tests done with monoclonal antibodies. It is important to realize, that not only does the body have a myriad of ways of fighting the virus other than just pure antibodies, but also that the antibodies we make in our bodies are variable, not MONO clonal. So that our bodies have a way of selecting out the most useful cells that produce the right shaped antibodies. This is very important even when talking about the purely cellular response that use antibody receptors to detect the virus as well. We produce an array of cells with an array of antibody receptors on those cells that recognize changes in the virus.
Then the fact that we can change the vaccines easily... People may want to jump all over BIG PHARMA but the techniques spawned because of this disaster is absolutely amazing.
And... We DONT NEED TO LOSE scientists from China and India who want to come here just because they are geeky science people. Let people come to this country, dont turn away brain power. Trump and this no expert shit was and is unbelievably stupid. It gives rise to derpage outbreaks which are possibly worse than any viruses.

The Coronavirus pandemic has earned the United States a new record for annual drug overdose deaths at 81,000, the Centers for Disease Control reported this week.
For a country that's only surpassed by Russia and Estonia in its share of population with an alcohol or drug addiction,
America's addiction epidemic stands as a threat to national security.

What are you worried about? Variants? There seems to be empirical, contemporaneous support for concern about COVID-19 variants. Until herd immunity is reached, the concern is a reasonable one, don't you think?
Europe recorded 1 million new COVID-19 cases last week, an increase of 9% from the previous week and a reversal that ended a six-week decline in new infections, WHO said Thursday.
“The spread of the variants is driving the increase, but not only,” said Dr. Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, citing “also the opening of society, when it is not done in a safe and a controlled manner.”
The variant first found in the U.K. is spreading significantly in 27 European countries monitored by WHO and is dominant in at least 10 countries: Britain, Denmark, Italy, Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Israel, Spain and Portugal.
It is up to 50% more transmissible than the virus that surged last spring and again in the fall, making it more adept at thwarting measures that were previously effective, WHO experts warned.

the absence of any focus on ventilation is bothersome, it's a respiratory pandemic.
For the purposes of this guidance, people are considered fully vaccinated for COVID-19 ≥2 weeks after they have received the second dose in a 2-dose series (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna), or ≥2 weeks after they have received a single-dose vaccine (Johnson and Johnson [J&J]/Janssen ).† (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html#footer)
The following recommendations apply to non-healthcare settings.
Fully vaccinated people can:
Visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing
Visit with unvaccinated people from a single household who are at low risk for severe COVID-19 disease indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing
Refrain from quarantine and testing following a known exposure if asymptomatic
For now, fully vaccinated people should continue to:
Take precautions in public like wearing a well-fitted mask and physical distancing
Wear masks, practice physical distancing, and adhere to other prevention measures when visiting with unvaccinated people who are at increased risk for severe COVID-19 (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/index.html) disease or who have an unvaccinated household member who is at increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease
Wear masks, maintain physical distance, and practice other prevention measures when visiting with unvaccinated people from multiple households
Avoid medium- and large-sized in-person gatherings
Get tested if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html)
Follow guidance issued by individual employers
Follow CDC and health department travel requirements and recommendations

Labor force participation for women has slipped to late 1980s levels. IMO women (or anyone else, for that matter) who had to abandon their jobs to care for children and loved ones at home should be paid for it.
(The child subsidies in the COVID bill will help to defray some of the lost income, but not the lost productivity.)
Nearly 3 million American women have left the labor force over the past year in a coronavirus (https://www.cbsnews.com/feature/coronavirus/)-induced exodus that reflects persistent pay inequality, undervalued work and antiquated notions of caregiving.
Before the pandemic, women consisted more than 50% of the country's workforce, underlining their importance to the economy. But that number has dropped sharply as many women, particularly mothers (https://www.minneapolisfed.org/article/2021/pandemic-pushes-mothers-of-young-children-out-of-the-labor-force#_ftn1) of young children, have been furloughed or laid off. Many others have had to choose between showing up at front-line jobs or caring for their children (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/distance-learning-4-million-parents-could-quit-jobs/) who, with daycare centers closed and school underway remotely, would otherwise be left without supervision.
Indeed, women remain 2.8 percentage points below their November 2019 labor force participation rate, according to the Minneapolis Fed (https://www.minneapolisfed.org/article/2021/pandemic-pushes-mothers-of-young-children-out-of-the-labor-force#_ftn1). The government's latest employment data, released Friday, shows that women's participation in the labor force declined in January (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/january-2021-jobs-report-unemployment/), while men's stayed flat.

More emphasis on ventilation and filtration would be opportune to protect patrons and staff alike, now that states have started to remove restrictions from businesses.
While it is still important to prevent person-to-person transmission via droplet spray, there is now a large body of scientific evidence (https://bmcinfectdis.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12879-019-3707-y) that particles much smaller than droplets can also spread the virus. These tiny particles, called aerosols, are emitted by infected people during breathing, talking and singing, and waft away in plumes of exhaled breath. The particles are so small they stay aloft for minutes to hours and can be carried distances by air currents.
In enclosed indoor spaces, these particles can accumulate, particularly if the ventilation is poor and the air is not filtered. There are now numerous studies of people infected with Covid-19 due to small particle inhalation, at distances far greater than the few feet that droplets travel.

China is in a tough situation. The West is on the verge of opening up, China can't possibly vaccinate enough of their population this year to open up to the world. By the time they are done with coronavirus they will have lost 2+ years of time towards building internal markets. Which means over the coming years as Mexico replaces them as the low cost manufacturing hub of the United States their economy will come crashing down. That's why they want everybody to stay locked down until the whole world is vaccinated. They are just trying to buy time in hopes that they can figure something out to save their failing system.

Sounds like Snake Boy is a dove on COVID for reasons of economic dominance. For some reason he thinks the US has the edge on China right now, and that pressing that advantage trumps any concern about risks that COVID still poses to human health and the economy in the US.
Almost as if he thinks the real problem is disease mitigation, and not the disease.

You seem to think stopping the virus is the problem but you dance around the issue when I ask you what you think the endgame is. Preventing serious disease/death (if that's what you mean by disease mitigation) has always been the one and only issue. Who cares if people get the sniffles after vaccination. In 12 weeks America will begin to help rescue the world because we will be done with our population. China will not be first on the list.

Nope. Russia is a gastation pretending to be a country economically. They do have nukes and build their armament from the first screw so they are a force militarily. But thats it. They are a middle weight at best.

Also not sure why you think vaccination will be over in three months, as I understand that's roughly when the US will have enough doses for everyone. Getting those doses into arms will presumably take some time. Last estimate I heard for that was "summer/fall."

Geostrategery and quite a bold prediction.
What signs do you see that China is verging on collapse?
You're aware that Sleepy Joe promised to be tougher on China than Trump correct? Thus far it appears he is going to keep that promise. China's entire economy is dependent on being a preferred trading partner with America. That started with idea that we gain access to their huge internal market, a nice idea that the CCP never allowed to happen. Aging demographics in China are now on the verge of rapidly changing to make China an unappealing market for US, retirement communities just don't consume enough. Plus old people just don't make good low cost workers. They can't steal cheap labor from other countries like we do because they are a closed society.
Mexico on the other hand has a perfect age pyramid and a shiny new trade deal with us. That's why we are stealing our shit job labor from central america instead of Mexico now.

Either U.S. schools should be closed due to the pandemic or they shouldn't. No one's really debating which option is better for kids' education, and I don't think someone advocating for closure has an obligation to deny their own kids alternate safe options. Link Between Governors’ Party Affiliation And COVID-19 Cases, Deaths
The per-capita rates of new COVID-19 cases and COVID-19 deaths were higher in states with Democrat governors in the first months of the pandemic last year,
but became much higher in states with Republican governors by mid-summer and through 2020,
possibly reflecting COVID-19 policy differences between GOP- and Democrat-led states
policy differences between Republican- and Democrat-governed states,
including mitigation measures such as mask mandates and social distancing requirements,
may have led to systematic differences in COVID-19’s impact on public health,
“Governors’ party affiliation may have contributed to a range of policy decisions that, together, influenced the spread of the virus,”

Germany's third wave is in full swing, the president of Germany's Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases (RKI), told the UN Journalists Association in Geneva on Wednesday.
"We have clear signs: The third wave in Germany has already begun," said Lothar Wieler.
Thursday marks one year since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global pandemic.
Wieler's comments came as the RKI recorded 14,356 new infections in the past 24 hours on Thursday, an increase of more than 2,400 over the prevous Thursday.
The infection rate also continued to rise, reaching 69.1 new cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days for Germany as a whole. The infection rate on Wednesday was 65.4.

And the purpose of flattening the curve was to keep hospitals from getting overwhelmed. If the vulnerable population has been vaccinated, and the vaccine is 100% effective in preventing hospitalizations & death, then there is no reason to worry about flattening the curve.
that was initially because we did not have enough ICU beds. We are prepped now we know how to take care of people who have got it much better with physical techniques and drugs.
We still don’t want people coming to the hospital with low oxygen counts and the ability to spread the virus. because there’s no way everyone will be at vaccinated.
If it could become easier than the flu this would be huge.

Back in December I think, Dr. Daniel Griffin said on TWiV that the FDA was so frustrated getting the run around from Astrezeneca that they had stopped talking to them and he didn't think they would approve it in the US. I thought that was a mistake but it turns out that company is just shitty and so is the vaccine.
Sleepy Joe needs to step up and pre-purchase a few billion doses of J&J and go save the world. Make it a vaccine lend-lease type thing.

"Does Joe Biden wants (sic) us to continue living in a state of fear?" Johnson wrote.
"This pandemic could have been defeated months ago & tens of thousands of lives saved if courageous frontline doctors and early treatment had not been censored and silenced as we awaited a vaccine."
multiple studies have found that hydroxychloroquine is not effective at treating COVID-19, and
Trump himself was not treated with the drug when he was hospitalized after coming down with COVID-19 last October.

Italy to lock down again.
Italy is facing another lockdown, as the government attempts to contain a recent surge of coronavirus cases, marred by the presence of new variants (https://cnn.com/2021/01/28/health/variants-coronavirus-new-popping/index.html).
Half of Italy's 20 regions, which include the cities Rome, Milan and Venice, will be entering new coronavirus restrictions from Monday, March 15. The measures will be effective through April 6, according to a decree passed by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi's cabinet on Friday.
In regions demarcated as "red zones" people will be unable to leave their houses except for work or health reasons, with all non-essential shops closed. In "orange zones," people will also be banned from leaving their town and their region -- except for work or health reasons -- and bars and restaurants will only be able to do delivery and take-away service.

Trump is quite the opposite. Disorganized, incompetent, golfs and tweets, listens to conspiracy theories, and does not accept any responsbility.

said they would not get one of the three federally approved coronavirus vaccines.
Among Democratic-leaning men, only 6% said the same.
“We’ve got to dissociate political persuasion from common sense, no-brainer public health things,” Fauci said.

One year ago today, this galaxy-brained take was posted.
2009-2010 - H1N1 outbreak, known as swine flu. Obama declares national emergency 6 months after first US registered case and after 1000 Americans already died. Overall, we lost 12,000+ people in the USA. According to liberals, Obama kept swine flu under control.
2020 coronavirus outbreak - around 40 victims...same liberals say Trump lost control already.
Noticeably, most of the other COVID deniers don't really post here any more.

Owners of Hospital Conglomerate Made Billions as Health Care Workers Lacked PPE
“While key workers put their lives on the line to keep the country running, and mutual aid groups desperately tried to plug the holes created by decades of cuts to our social fabric, billionaires and big corporate interests have made a killing.”
HCA has reaped enormous profits by squeezing workers and cutting costs, while showering top management with lavish compensation.
HCA made nearly $4 billion in profits in 2020 during the pandemic, up more than $200 million from 2019.
At the same time the company cut supply costs by $112 million, even though workers spoke out for months about inadequate PPE and having to reuse single use equipment like masks and gloves.
HCA’s staffing levels were 29 percent below the national average. HCA’s low staffing levels have been linked to poor patient outcomes.
For example, low staffing levels at HCA’s Colorado hospitals may have contributed to patient death as well as other preventable harm.

Capitalism's for-profit health care fucks everybody, except the Capitalists, by design.
