But your personal stance doesn't equate to the board average. If you're going to intervene with a defense for "them", you'll need to reference "them" not "you".
But you're suspect as well.
The fact you cannot list anything positive from the administration basically illustrates my point.
I won’t mince words on what Trump’s actions have been and are. Every calculation, every action is aim to protect himself from responsibility and accountability and to improve his chances of re-election. Every thought begins and ends with what’s in it for me. There is nothing else to the man, his entire life he has been as a corrupt opportunist and self promoter. I actually agree with Tribe. If our leadership was too inept to do the things we needed for an eventual re-opening of the economy, then Shutdown 2020 was pointless and we may as well go through with herd immunity.
Are you aware how herd immunity works though? Herd immunity requires at least 50%+ of the population to have become infected and recovered in order to get to some level of normalcy.
Which implicitly means we need massive testing in place. We're still far from being aware what percentage of our population has been or is infected.
Even "herd immunity" requires a plan, and lots of testing, if that's your strategy. Reopening and wishing things away is not a plan.

Of course. If you think a person who has his wealth and background who can win that position through negative campaigning and promising things to niche audiences might be ethical or moral, you're naive. Bernie purports to be concerned about the nation, but he's never going to be the nominee. Instead, Biden who's just another corporate shill is going to be your other choice.
This has been the case for a long long time. Americans then have to look at themselves as ask what's important to them. Who puts these people there? Trump didn't sneak in.
Shit, if he had just given a quarter of a mea culpa and gotten on with saving lives without all the grievances he'd be as popular as Cuomo.

If you give Trump a pass on all past mistakes are you continuing to give him the mistakes he continues to make like calling states to liberate after making opening up the states the governors’ responsibility or throwing all the responsibility for testing on the governors? Some western countries have made mistake, hardly any to the degree at the central government level as Trump. Most have gotten their act together, not Trump, he has no act except appointing unqualified people, firing those who point out his errors and deferring blame. That is part of the coronavirus discussion.

I dont give Trump a pass on anything. He is an embarrassment. At the same time, blaming all the deaths on him is just stupid. We were unprepared now and we were unprepared before Trump was elected. We allowed ourselves to get in the trap of necessary protective gear and drugs being manufactured in China who hogged the supplies when the rest of the world needed them. Blaming Trump is just as stupid as blaming Pelosi because neither one could shit the gear we needed. This will turn out to be like our reaction to 9/11. “Dr. Frieden said that if the state and city had adopted widespread social-distancing measures a week or two earlier, including closing schools, stores and restaurants, then the estimated death toll from the outbreak might have been reduced by 50 to 80 percent.
But New York mandated those measures after localities in states including California and Washington had done so.
San Francisco, for example, ordered schools closed on March 12 when that city had 18 confirmed cases; Ohio also ordered its schools closed on the same day, with five confirmed cases. Mr. de Blasio ordered schools in New York to close three days later when the city had 329 cases.”
“ Then seven Bay Area counties imposed stay-at-home rules on March 17. Two days later, the entire state of California ordered the same. New York State’s stay-at-home order came on the 20th, and went into effect on March 22.
“New York City as a whole was late in social measures,” said Isaac B. Weisfuse, a former New York City deputy health commissioner. “Any after-action review of the pandemic in New York City will focus on that issue. It has become the major issue in the transmission of the virus.”
“By March 5, Mr. de Blasio seemed to acknowledge the virus had spread beyond control. “You have to assume it could be anywhere in the city,” he said.
Still, not wanting to cause undue alarm, he told New Yorkers to go on with their normal lives, which left many confused about the danger they faced.
The city’s health commissioner, Dr. Oxiris Barbot, had sought to reassure commuters, in early February, that “this is not something that you’re going to contract in the subway or on the bus.” The mayor reiterated the point several times in early March.
But there seemed to be little basis for that confidence.”

“A 39-year-old woman took Flight 701 from Doha, Qatar, to John F. Kennedy International Airport in late February, the final leg of her trip home to New York City from Iran.
A week later, on March 1, she tested positive for the coronavirus, the first confirmed case in New York City of an outbreak that had already devastated China and parts of Europe. The next day, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, appearing with Mayor Bill de Blasio at a news conference, promised that health investigators would track down every person on the woman’s flight. But no one did.”

This guy is been grasping at a shit load of straws over this pandemic. Not a peer reviewed paper. Germany isn't the US, so even if this is true, we can't expect the same/similar results in the US. Different environmental variables, from population density, weather, average health of citizens, average age, how people comply with "moderate social distancing," and etc.
The safe bet is still stay-at-home, because that at least guarantees moderate social distancing. And personally, I think stay-at-home works. We'll return to Sweden vs. California. As I said before, California has 4x pop, 5x population density, more international travel, but a 5x better death rate than Sweden. Difference? One region is basically locked down while the other is more laxed. Norway/Denmark (same pop as Sweden with same climate) is also outperforming Sweden by a big margin.

In rare but growing number of cases, children hospitalized with coronavirus in Massachusetts
Boston Children’s Hospital had seven patients admitted with confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus,
including three in the intensive care unit.
The number of COVID-19-positive admissions has since climbed to 13, with three in the ICU as of Sunday.
In a pandemic perceived as largely sparing the very young from serious illness,
a growing number of children infected with COVID-19 in Massachusetts have become so severely ill that
they have needed hospitalization

Trash still refuses to open ACA signups.
First, the coronavirus pandemic took their jobs.
Then, it wiped out their health insurance.
In a nation where most health coverage is hinged to employment, the economy’s vanishing jobs are wiping out insurance in the midst of a pandemic.
About 22 million workers have filed unemployment claims since mid-March, according to the most recent federal figures (https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/04/16/unemployment-claims-coronavirus/?tid=lk_inline_manual_8&itid=lk_inline_manual_8), and that includes only the people who have gotten through to clogged state workforce offices.
The latest census data show that job-based coverage accounted for 55 percent of Americans’ health insurance,
though the kinds of work disappearing the most — restaurant jobs and others in the service industry — have always been less likely to offer health benefits.
estimates (https://www.epi.org/blog/9-2-million-workers-likely-lost-their-employer-provided-health-insurance-in-the-past-four-weeks/) that 9.2 million U.S. residents were at high risk of having lost coverage during the past four weeks.
perhaps 12 million to 35 million people will lose job-based insurance because of the pandemic, on top of the 27.5 million who were uninsured before the virus arrived.

“On February 19th there was a Democratic Debate, in Las Vegas. Three words weren’t said: Virus, CoronaVirus, or COVID19. NEVER came upFeb. 23: “We have it very much under control in this country.” — Trump in speaking to reporters.
Feb. 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!” — Trump in a tweet.
Feb. 26: “So we’re at the low level. As they get better, we take them off the list, so that we’re going to be pretty soon at only five people. And we could be at just one or two people over the next short period of time. So we’ve had very good luck.” — Trump at a White House briefing.
Feb. 26: “And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done.” — Trump at a press conference.
Feb. 26: “I think every aspect of our society should be prepared. I don’t think it’s going to come to that, especially with the fact that we’re going down, not up. We’re going very substantially down, not up.” — Trump at a press conference, when asked if “U.S. schools should be preparing for a coronavirus spreading.”
Feb. 27: “It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear.” — Trump at a White House meeting with African American leaders.

Trump accused of "knowingly" spreading coronavirus to Central America through deportation
At least 89 immigrants in detention have tested positive for COVID-19 so far, as well as 21 ICE employees
the Guatemalan health minister said an estimated 75% (https://abcnews.go.com/International/75-migrants-deported-guatemala-single-flight-tested-positive/story?id=70156471) of the people on one deportation flight from the U.S. later tested positive for the virus.
Health Minister Hugo Monroy's claim raised fears that
the U.S. is willfully sending sick people back to the countries they left,
creating conditions for larger outbreaks in countries including Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.
"If Monroy is correct, it could mean dozens of Guatemala's cases are tied to U.S. deportations,"

How to balance livelihood and public health if you're a US state governor?
There's a lot to learn from other countries
Tl;dr
we’ve interviewed experts and frontline officials from Italy, Germany, Spain, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea. While they differ on the details, their views formed a startlingly united consensus of what’s needed:
Massive, ongoing testing to detect where the disease is spreading,
a real-time ability to trace contacts of those infected and isolate them,
a willingness of people to wear masks in crowded public spaces,
reserves of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other equipment for hospital workers to handle any surge in cases,
and reliable, easily administered blood tests to find out the number of people who have been infected. If they work well, such tests could eventually be used to identify people with immunity who could work at higher-risk jobs

A new study by one of China’s top scientists has found the ability of the new coronavirus to mutate has been vastly underestimated and different strains may account for different impacts of the disease in various parts of the world.
rofessor Li Lanjuan and her colleagues from Zhejiang University found within a small pool of patients many mutations not previously reported. These mutations included changes so rare that scientists had never considered they might occur.
They also confirmed for the first time with laboratory evidence that certain mutations could create strains deadlier than others.

Mutations should probably make it less deadly since that gives it much better chance to replicate and spread if it doesn't kill the host.

As Reck said, that's the main method of transport for many New Yorkers, most who are essential workers. It should be shutdown, but can it?
But also hope the Covid naysayers don't think this is a reason to classify this as a "New York" problem?
New York was life as normal for awhile, and they've already suffered 5x as many deaths from Covid vs. a typical flu season. Stands to reason that if other regions went on life as normal, the ratio would be similar. Michigan has already exceeded their typical flu death numbers.

Okay you said through the air conditioning which would mean it's airborne and could be sent all over the entire building. Airflow and air conditioning are two different things. Just because air conditioning is causing the airflow it doesn't mean that the disease is moving through the air conditioning system.

Can’t speak to the country but in SA oncology services are not being disrupted. In Toronto where I have a relative practicing mammography for breast cancer there is no disruption of service. I think it’s more likely there would be deaths from COVID in patients with a history of cancer with impaired immune systems from chemotherapy and particularly those who underwent a bone marrow transplant and those suppressed because of organ transplants. Pretty sure Sean Elliott wants no part of COVID.

‘Living in a failed state’:
Devastating column slams Trump’s administration for being
‘too corrupt or stupid to head off mass suffering’
https://cdn.theatlantic.com/assets/media/img/posts/2020/04/DIS_Packer_Underlying/67d5a46f3.jpg
George Packer argues that the coronavirus didn’t “break” America — it revealed what was already broken.
the country already had a number of underlying conditions, according to Packer —
conditions that were being “ruthlessly” exploited. “…
a corrupt political class,
a sclerotic bureaucracy,
a heartless economy,
a divided and distracted public—
had gone untreated for years,” Packer writes.
“We had learned to live, uncomfortably, with the symptoms.
It took the scale and intimacy of a pandemic to expose their severity—
to shock Americans with the recognition that we are in the high-risk category.”
the Trump administration acted like the governments of Pakistan or Belarus —
“like a country with shoddy infrastructure and a dys#func#tional government
whose leaders were too corrupt or stupid to head off mass suffering.”
“From the president came willful blindness, scapegoating, boasts, and lies.
From his mouthpieces, conspiracy theories and miracle cures.
A few senators and corporate executives acted quickly—not to prevent the coming disaster, but to profit from it.
When a government doctor tried to warn the public of the danger,
the White House took the mic and politicized
the message.”

‘I don’t see any other way out’:
Diagnostic testing and smartphone contact tracing to beat pandemic
What makes the Covid-19 pandemic so difficult to contain?
Silent transmission by asymptomatic patients is partly responsible,
but research emerging from Germany suggests the SARS-CoV-2 virus has developed a second impressive strategy for ensuring its success:
the ability to establish two separate communities within a host –
the first in the throat,
the second in the lungs.
Early colonisation of the throat is responsible for the dangerous lag between a person being infectious and the onset of symptoms.
‘With a throat-borne pathogen, the virus arrives and replicates in the throat, and all you feel is an itch or a soreness or even nothing.
As it replicates to an infectious concentration, there’s still no reaction from your immune system,’ he said.
‘Only a few days later,
when the virus spreads from the throat to the lung, do symptoms kick in.
At that point, you’ve already been spreading the virus for a few days.
As we know now, about 45% of all infectious events (with the coronavirus) occur before the onset of symptoms.’
aggressive testing within populations as essential if the world is to get on top of the pandemic.
‘Even if you identify patients on the day of symptom onset and immediately lock them in,
you’ve already lost half of the time that you’d like to have to prevent all infections,’

Honestly, why do you keep posting info from this hack? He posts these information blurbs without extrapolation in order to downplay and try to create justification for "opening up."
And it's already been theorized a month ago that true mortality rate is much lower than the official case fatality rate. And my reply to that is: So? In the harder hit regions (and even Sweden) Covid has already caused more deaths than even the worst flu seasons. New York averages about 400-500 deaths per day from ALL causes usually. They're averaging more than that in Covid deaths. This is worse than flu. It's not the Black Plague, sure, but even if we find out the real morality rate is .02 (twice that of the flu), that is still a BIG problem for a virus we don't have an immunity to and treatment for.

A range of 17 to 100 million is a worthless estimate. Yes. All you need to know to take action against something is "that it's bad." I think New York City suffering nearly 20K deaths (when their flu death toll is usually around 4000 over 6 months) should illustrate how bad this is.
Is this where we pivot to from Covid/with Covid? This is also dumb, because if Covid turns a livable hypertension disorder into a death, yes, you died FROM Covid.
And deaths aren't the only thing that matters in judging severity. What about the hospitalization rates? ICU rates? Or the average recovery time? We really don't know right now. But New York has provided a good sample. They had 18K hospitalizations last flu season. Already up to 57K Covid hospitalizations.

‘That’s just delusional’:
Governors are calling Trump’s bluff over COVID-19 testing
Trump spent much of his Sunday coronavirus news briefing boasting about the country’s testing capacity (https://www.salon.com/2020/03/29/as-us-coronavirus-testing-lags-scientists-say-we-need-better-tests-to-restart-society/),
but governors around the nation fact-checked the president’s claims as “delusional” and “totally false.”
he claimed that testing had “rapidly” expanded to “millions and millions of people.”
“It should be a local thing,” Trump insisted, but “we’re helping them a lot.”
But governors from both parties fact-checked these claims as false.
The U.S. is currently processing about 150,000 tests per day, according to the Covid Tracking Project (https://covidtracking.com/data/us-daily).
However, Harvard researchers estimate that the U.S. will have to conduct upwards of 500,000 to 700,000 tests per day (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/17/us/coronavirus-testing-states.html) to be able to reopen by mid-May.
Testing is needed to identify and isolate new cases and trace their contacts to prevent further outbreaks.
“Every governor in America has been pushing and fighting and clawing to get more tests.”
“The president is simply lying about the availability of all those components of testing —
the swabs and everything,"
“You can’t get those things. You cannot get them.”
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, said his state could vastly increase testing if the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changed its guidelines around testing reagents, which are chemicals used to extract and detect samples.
“I could probably double — maybe even triple — testing in Ohio virtually overnight if the FDA would prioritize companies that are putting a slightly different formula together for the extraction reagent kit,”
Trump’s testing czar, :lol
Assistant Health and Human Services Sec. Admiral Brett Giroir, has also come under fire after The Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/brett-giroir-trumps-testing-czar-was-forced-out-of-a-job-developing-vaccine-projects-now-hes-on-the-hot-seat/2020/04/19/b061b968-7e89-11ea-8de7-9fdff6d5d83e_story.html) reported that
he was forced out of his old job developing vaccines at Texas A&M University
after a brutal performance review. :lol The Best People!

People aren't going to fill restaurants, theaters, clubs, sporting events, bars, etc like they once did.
We're also going to have to think about how to temporarily tweak traditional businesses that rely on crowds in some way where they can still employ servers. Transform the traditional restaurant dining experience into a drive-in, like those old 50s diners where the gals on roller skates came to your cars. Theater industry needs to transition to drive-ins. That kind of thing.

'At home' study will test if common drug can prevent serious COVID-19 complications
Study participants will receive the drug by mail within 48 hours of diagnosis.
test whether a common anti-inflammatory drug can ward off serious complications from COVID-19 and possibly prevent patients from ending up in the hospital.
"We suspect that early treatment, before the onset of severe symptoms requiring hospitalization, may provide the best chance to improve outcomes.
By the time extensive lung damage has developed, it may be too late to intervene successfully."
Colchicine is a widely available drug used to treat gout (https://www.livescience.com/34729-gout-causes-symptoms-treatment.html), a type of arthritis

I'm hoping for anything that works.
I'm hoping for anything that works that is already deep into clinical trials, because we're probably going back to exponential growth once the country reopens.

That's essential travel and everyone stays in their cars. I don't see the parallel. Guess I have to see the poll question but I think that would be understood.
Think Darren was using it as an example of how people are hurting financially right now. And this is something we have indeed have to address. But I don't see how open up will help your out of work waiters/waitresses, bartenders, theater snackbar workers and ushers, retail salespeople? Those industries won't fully recover until vaccine/herd immunity.

Yeah $1000 a month per person for the next 4-5 months or until there is a treatment good enough to allow us to fully reopen the country (we're obviously not doing the testing + contact tracing method South Korea has successfully employed).

Yeah, it sucks. And it really is damned if you, damned if you don't. There's just no way to completely avoid economic turmoil. And people have been warning about pandemics for years, if not decades. We dodged a couple of bullets in the past (SARS-1, Bird Flu), but it was really only a matter of time. We got complacent. All of us. A pandemic wasn't on my list of personal concerns, either. They happened "in the past" or they "happen over there." I'm as guilty as anyone.
What we need is national rainy day fund of trillions and trillions, and a building up of our healthcare infrastructure to a level never before seen. This will not be the last pandemic threat, and I consider them more of a threat than anything military related. So I'm saying I want the same, if not more, focus on pandemic response than national defense going forward.

I know what you mean. Pandemic was only on my list of concerns because I saw Bill Gates give a TED talk on them five years ago and then started reading about the 1918 Spanish Flu and how it devastated the world. Pretty fascinating to watch firsthand interviews from people who survived the pandemic. A few hard hit counties in Alabama I think published on youtube interviews with survivors a few years ago that were fascinating to listen to and how these little towns banded up and tried to care for their neighbors who couldn't leave the house or even their beds.

Trump’s Golf Company Pushes Dangerous Theory That Alcohol Will Cure The Coronavirus
In a video shared by Donald Trump’s golf company on Twitter, professional golfer and Trump supporter John Daly suggested alcohol will cure the coronavirus.
“I kinda got a cure for this, ya know.
I think you just take – I only drink one drink a day, it just happens to be a bottle of good old Belvedere,” the golfer said.
“That’s the way you kill this coronavirus, I believe.”

Google and Apple will likely put together a pretty good infrastructure but they want the governments to create the api which will likely be the fuck up point (see democratic voting app). Already some senators and reps are pissing and moaning about privacy, probably mostly because it will be anonymized, to the extent possible, and they won’t control the keys. Then you’ll have the conspiracy theorist to deal with. It’s intended to be voluntary but only effective to the extent of uptake.

Do you know why some hospitals can potentially handle a surge right now? Yeah, that's how stay-at-home orders work. I don't know why people are under the impression that the plateau we're on (we're past the peak and are riding a plateau now) is the result of "just because." No, it's a fuckin' result of our collective efforts to stay the fuck home.
I don't want anybody to die unnecessarily, but we're talking cult mentality here, tbh... at some point they're only going to get the memo once the body count goes high up enough. Pretty sad since we had the whole hoax thing like 2 months ago, and apparently some people have extremely short memory.

Some better data on asymptomatic/presymptomatic rate.
1252412650790678529
Good and bad. Good, because it guarantees a lower mortality rate. Bad, because that large of a percentage who don't know they have it can easily spread it to those vulnerable. If anything, the large proportion of asymptomatic carriers is more of a reason to social distance. Reason SARS-1 burned itself out quickly was because asymptomatic carriers weren't really that infectious and then could easily isolate when they got sick.
