By definition, "martial law" in the US is Federal suspension of habeas corpus
Not exactly true. Suspension of the writ of habeas corpus deprives the right of those held in detention to be brought before a judge, with the implication being indefinite detainment is possible. Martial law means administration of and rule by the military. The two can be hand-in-hand concepts, but martial law doesn't mean the writ has been suspended.

Interesting. So for every 4 cases you catch because of symptoms, you have 3 asymptomatic carriers spreading it around. Interesting. Hard to tell if that carries to the wider population, but strongly implies we are going to miss a lot of cases.
Given that we are limiting testing to people with symptoms, that means we are absolutely not catching around half of the people who have it, if not more.

In think it's worth testing NBA players, for pure data collection. What those players do on a daily basis is the opposite of "social distancing". They're in close quarters, sweating profusely, breathing heavily, all touching the same ball, licking their hands, etc. If covid-19 is as contagious as claimed, a ton of players, staff, and their families should test positive. I hope some creative minds get together and instead of just sending 1k checks - think of implementing a plan-
for example:
Sundays - ALL businesses closed
mon/wed/fri = all businesses - named A thru L - open for drive thrus, delivery, to go orders
tues/thur/sat = all businesses named - M thru Z - open while above close
instead of a bunch of bankruptcies and layoffs- just lower profits or breakeven
instead of employees losing jobs- they just hang on and ride it out

Nope. In the ideal study you want total randomization, you don't want any selection bias.

That's the thing is that cruises don't really offer a representative sample of the wider population, even of elderly.
Wider population of the elderly includes a lot of people who might not be healthy enough to go on a cruise, for example. Cruises also indicate a certain amount of affluence, another factor in overall health.

As of a few days ago they had tested around .3% of their population. It's really hard to know how many people are asymptomatic but we know for sure from Americans in qt that just had one or two days of mild symptoms and then were carriers for a month. Someday we'll get a study of the general population testing for antibodies (not the virus) and then they'll be able to figure out a more accurate mortality rate.
The thing about this virus is just how freakin contagious it is. It could have a very low mortality rate but the fact that it infects so many people so fast would make it appear as if it was more lethal. Especially if there are a large number of people with little to no symptoms that are completely unaccounted for.

The fact that South Korea's death rate has gone up from 0.7% to 1.0% in a week has to be troubling considering how much they have been testing. One of the things I worried about with that 0.7% number was that it might have been heavily biased towards people who had just developed enough viral load to test positive and that it could increase as that wave of positives had some time for symptoms to worsen. I hope it stabilizes at 1.0% and doesn't increase further from the same phenomenon.

What do you make of Korea's death rate increasing from 0.7% to 1.0% in about a week? Is their hospital system starting to go under? I would have guessed the most at risk groups would have been the ones testing first so that death rates might go down or at least stay pretty stable as the testing skewed less and less from the highest risk groups. But that 0.7% rate seemed a little premature and I was concerned it was hugely oversampling people who just developed enough viral load to be detectable (eg more recent infections) and that it could increase as that population had time for the infection to advance. Tough to know what the hell is going on with this thing. It would be great if that death number was as low as the paper claims though and it went through most of the population so we could get away with only 2-3 months of city lockdowns and expensive ass UBI payments.

COVID-19 spread is fueled by 'stealth transmission'
people with COVID-19 who didn't get diagnosed, likely because they didn't feel very sick, were the source of at least two-thirds of documented COVID-19 cases in China in the early days of the outbreak.
"The explosion of COVID-19 cases in China was largely driven by individuals with mild, limited, or no symptoms who went undetected,"
"Undetected cases can expose a far greater portion of the population to [the] virus than would otherwise occur. …
These 'stealth transmissions' will continue to present a major challenge to the containment of this outbreak
prior to the lockdown of Wuhan on Jan. 23,
about 86% of all COVID-19 infections in China were undetected.
In other words,
for every confirmed case of COVID-19, there were six undetected cases,
the number of cases worldwide could be five to 10 times higher than what has been reported, meaning
the true number of cases could be higher than 1.5 million,
After China implemented the lockdown on Wuhan, officials were able to detect the majority of cases, 65%, and reduce the spread of the disease.
The findings suggest "a radical increase in the identification and isolation of currently undocumented infections would be needed to fully control SARS-CoV-2,"

Most families can self segregate a few older members. If you live in a mixed age house and can't do that then more people in that particular house have to quarantine. If there was hospitalization data we could "control burn" the virus throughout the younger population and fast track the process.

Of course not, we'd be doing this shit for 1-5 years if that was the case. The idea seems to be distancing so as to slow the transmission enough to not completely overwhelm the hospital system like Italy's is, where people who should be savable under ordinary circumstances are killed by it. This thing is contagious enough it's still going to spread just from people going to the grocery store and other necessities, but the endgame is enough Americans get it that transmission starts to slow and then you can open more and more back up until you get to 40% to 70% infection here. And then you just stop worrying about it and treat it like the flu since it probably won't spread like wildfire once that proportion has already had it and developed antibodies. This is the controlled burn.

What's the timetable for that? A hard shutdown would spread too slowly. The person using the term keeps praising China for how effective it is. Given that context it's a shit strategy.

Hard shutdowns only make sense once health facilities collapsed. The whole social distancing approach we have now is so we can avoid that.
Unfortunately, states like Washington or New York, like China or Italy, took a while to get this whole thing implemented and are suffering as a result.
The slow burn can last the rest of the year, easily. The whole idea is that the hospital and health system can deal with the infections in an orderly manner.

What's the end game for a full shutdown? Grind the virus to a halt only for it to bloom up later? So periodic full shutdown until a vaccine? No.
no end game. its just to slow the bleeding so medical services dont completely collapse
but because of what I said
- we cannot build 20,000 bed hospitals in a week here
- we are still allowing ppl to self isolate
we might still lose our medical services
but again back to “flattening the curve” its basically picking how fast will our services degrade. in 1 week or hopefully in a few months

The Trump Presidency Is Over
It has taken a good deal longer than it should have, but Americans have now seen the con man behind the curtain.
the president and his administration are responsible for grave, costly errors,
most especially
the epic manufacturing failures in diagnostic testing,
the decision to test too few people,
the delay in expanding testing to labs outside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and
problems in the supply chain.
These mistakes have left us blind and badly behind the curve, and,
for a few crucial weeks, they created a false sense of security.
What we now know is that
the coronavirus silently spread for several weeks, without us being aware of it and
while we were doing nothing to stop it.
Containment and mitigation efforts could have significantly slowed its spread at an early, critical point,
but we frittered away that opportunity.

Public health expert believes millennials may face "disproportional number of infections"
From CNN's Maegan Vazquez
Evan Vucci/AP
Dr. Deborah Birx said during Wednesday’s briefing at the White House that the coronavirus task force is concerned about reports indicating that more young people are becoming seriously ill from coronavirus, suggesting they may have continued to be exposed to the virus because they weren’t concerned about being at risk.
“There are concerning reports coming out of France and Italy about some young people getting seriously ill and very seriously ill in the ICUs,” Birx said.
“We think part of this may be that people heeded the early data coming out of China and coming out of South Korea of the elderly or those with preexisting medical conditions were a particular risk,” she continued. “It may have been that the millennial generation … there may be disproportional number of infections among that group and so even if it’s a rare occurrence it may be seen more frequently in that group.”
Birx added that the task force has “not seen any significant mortality in children.”

so lets say conservative and say 90 million. 25 million of those uninsured
About 130 million people in this country have HBP alone. No way 130 million is the ceiling.
Prove it.
Just looked at date of tweet thought this was current. It was months ago, my bad.
But WHO is most definitely being influenced by CCP.
China’s near-total takeover of the World Health Organization comes at a sharp human cost, as the world is tragically now realizing.
The coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread throughout the world, having infected more than 100,000 people and causing the deaths of more than 4,000. Officials in charge of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have rightly received plenty of criticism about how they’ve managed the outbreak, with nearly half a million people calling on WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to resign.
The reason for the WHO’s failure to properly act to contain the outbreak, and its repeated issuing of inaccurate and bad advice, is not merely the result of incompetence. Rather, the malfeasance is the direct result of the CCP deliberately buying out WHO’s leadership, with tragic consequences.
Experts have pinned the virus as starting possibly as early as October, months before the CCP alerted the world about the risks posed by the deadly disease. Rather than addressing the issue, China arrested journalists and doctors who tried to sound the alarm. In addition, the “People’s Republic” blocked information on social media and removed all news stories that attempted to report accurate infection numbers. The end result of this was preventable suffering, as countries were unable to take the urgent action needed to respond.
Yet through all the CCP’s obfuscation and ensigning preventable deaths, the WHO consistently praised the CCP for its “transparency” and “leadership,” saying its actions were “making us safer.” To the incredulity of health professionals around the world when finally alerted to the seriousness of the threat in January, the WHO refused to declare it a public health emergency. It took until February 10 for the WHO to even send an advance party to China.
At the same time WHO representatives gushed in praise of the regime’s response, noting the “Chinese people feel protected.” The WHO continues to lavishly praise China as they continued to downplay the threat of the coronavirus, taking months to classify it finally as a pandemic because that “might spook the world further.”

Looking at the Johns Hopkins map, the disparity between colder vs. warmer climates is striking. SE Asia (Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos) haven't collectively broken 2,000 cases. Even shitholes like India (156) and Sri Lanka (51) have low case counts. Malaysia (790) and Indonesia (227) are more hard hit, but their numbers are still small comparatively.
Yes there are a bunch of alternate factors here, and we need more time, but there may be some potential that this shit will be affected by the change in season.

He is responsible, however, for the response to the crisis, which he has bungled, badly, as everybody not blinded by his cult knew would happen.
I was appalled when they disbanded the pandemic team, seemingly for the sole reason that it was put in place by Obama, using "cost savings" as the covering lie. Who knows, maybe they were genuine in that.
At this point though, that decision proved short sighted.
I have always maintained that the vast majority of preferred "conservative" policies are fucking stupid and MORE EXPENSIVE in the long run. "abstinence only sex-ed", Opposition to sex-ed, beliief that climate change is a hoax, opposition to abortion, short-changing infrastructure, short-changing schools, belief in infallible free-markets, etc,
This is just another stone in the fail pile.

im just gonna hope im one of the ones that doesnt get hit as hard - but no guarantees
on a karma note:
I KNEW when this traitor criminal stole the office we were fucked-
I thought he would be prosecuted BEFORE we were fucked - but now

Hillary slangin that Chinese propaganda
4 years in and you're still with her
Thailand is by far the craziest to me because those extra days of infection matter a huge amount when it comes to exponential growth. India didn't have its first confirmed case until 17 days after Thailand. 17 days ago there were 40 dead in Italy. Now there are 3000. 17 days is an enormous time period with exponential growth.
Good point. Sounds like Thailand fucked up the response (it's just now starting to shut large public gatherings down). And they've had large jumps in new infections. But we're talking about 30 new cases a day.

Ohio needs more gun free zones to stop the killings. Democratic leadership is doing great.
Don't forget Chicago while you're at it

Trump received several warnings of impending pandemic but they ignored it, dismantled the pandemic team (or at least cut off its legs) - and now people are dying.
Anyone remember a few months back when the intel community wanted to give Congress a classified briefing on the state of things?
trump refused to allow them to brief congress and it never took place according to members of congress...
what are the odds that in a few weeks/months we will learn - the hard way- of something that will hurt the USA?
criminal actions

He ain't responsible for CoronaPERIOD
He is responsible for his bungling, slow response. More people will die than would have otherwise been the case, had anyone else been president.
You are making excuses for, essentially, negligent manslaughter. Not too surprising, given how much conservatives made excuses for all the dead soldiers from Bush's bungling of the Iraq occupation.
You guys will do, and say, and excuse, ANYTHING, to protect your morally and intellectually bankrupt political party.
