doctors say there is a shortage of testing kits and other medical supplies
long lines outside hospitals for testing and treatment suggest that the outbreak is spreading far beyond the official count of cases.
Ambulances, too, are hard to come by, residents say. In recent days, some say they have called 120, China’s equivalent of the emergency number 911, only to be told that there were already hundreds of people in the queue.
“The situation that we’ve seen is much worse than what has been officially reported,” Long Jian, 32, said outside a hospital where his elderly father was being treated. Mr. Long said his father had to go to six hospitals and wait seven days before he could even be tested for the coronavirus. (...) “In our neighborhood, many who weren’t able to get diagnosed ended up dying at home.”
Definitely some underreporting going on in mainland China.

China to allow in U.S. health experts as virus shows no sign of slowing
The WHO last week declared the flu-like virus a global emergency. It has spread to 23 other countries and regions. The Philippines reported the first coronavirus death outside of China.
Airlines around the world have stopped flights to parts of China.
Washington has “unceasingly manufactured and spread panic,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters, noting that
the WHO had advised against trade and travel curbs.

This Chinese doctor tried to save lives, but was silenced. Now he has coronavirus
https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/03/asia/coronavirus-doctor-whistle-blower-intl-hnk/index.html
On December 30, Li Wenliang dropped a bombshell in his medical school alumni group on the popular Chinese messaging app WeChat: seven patients from a local seafood market had been diagnosed with an illness similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and quarantined in his hospital.
"I only wanted to remind my university classmates to be careful," Li said.
But within hours, screenshots of his messages -- containing his name -- went viral. Soon after, Li became one of several whistleblower medics targeted by Wuhan police.
Here's a look at how things unfolded:
December 30: Li Wenliang sends the warning message to his former classmates. That same day, the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission warned the city's medical institutions of an "unknown pneumonia" linked to a seafood market.
December 31: Wuhan's health authorities discuss the outbreak in an emergency meeting, and alert the World Health Organization. Li is summoned by officials to explain how he knew about the cases.
January 3: Li is reprimanded by police for "spreading rumors online" and "severely disrupting social order," and asked to sign a statement promising not to commit further "unlawful acts."
January 10: Li begins coughing and develops a fever after unwittingly treating a patient with the Wuhan coronavirus.
January 28: China's Supreme Court criticizes Wuhan police for punishing the "rumormongers." The next day, Wuhan police issued a statement saying the targeted people had only committed "particularly minor" misdemeanors.
February 1: Li tests positive for coronavirus.

Coronavirus whistleblower doctor died from the virus:
https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-02-06-20-intl-hnk/index.html
Dr. Li Wenliang — the Chinese whistleblower doctor who warned the public of a potential "SARS-like" disease in December 2019 — has died of coronavirus in Wuhan today, according to several state media reports.
Li was questioned by local health authority, and was later summoned by Wuhan police to sign a reprimand letter in which he was accused of "spreading rumors online" and "severely disrupting social order."
He was hospitalized on Jan. 12 after contracted the virus from his patient, and he was confirmed to have the coronavirus on Feb. 1.

Chinese ambassador slams global reaction to coronavirus as a "panicked overreaction"
From Lindsay Isaac, CNN London
China's ambassador to the UK has called the global reaction to the coronavirus epidemic an “overreaction” and criticized the media for a “bias” against China.
Speaking in London, Liu Xiaoming called for a “reasonable response” and accused people of “discrimination” in targeting the Chinese community.
He praised China’s response to the epidemic which he said went above and beyond World Health Organization regulations. Liu called for respect for the country and its response to the epidemic.
Liu downplayed the outbreak by comparing it to the flu in the US, and said China is ”fully confident” in beating the virus, dismissing its negative effects on the country’s economy as “temporary.”

He may be right. As the sample size continues to get larger the mortality rate has steadily declined. Quite a ways to go before it's comparable to just another flu but it heading in the right direction for now.

Doesn't matter. If they can't stop it, they can't stop it. Then it just makes it way through the population until it burns out like Zika did.
If you read through the CDC update that's the sense I get. They don't say it outright but you get the sense they expect this won't be stopped.
https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2020/t0205-coronavirus-update.html
Edit: Actually they do kind of say it outright
The answer to the first question, i think that this comes down to need to be humble. Of course we’re looking at the data and trying to answer exactly the question that you are asking. I don’t think that we’ve seen that right now there is any sign that this has stopped. I think that it is premature to comment on whether it has slowed down. But we do believe that we have a window of opportunity now to prepare the united states in case that there is a broader spread of this outside china as well as a broader spread in the united states. And so as i said before, we’re preparing as if this is a pandemic. That is just good common sense public health. But of course i’m hoping that it is not. In terms of the planes, what i can tell you is that two either have landed or are landing today and the other two will be landing tomorrow. And i don’t have an exact count yet of the number of people on those planes. We’ll have that after all four have landed and we can provide that information in follow up.

I'm sure this strain just like SARS, MERS, or influenza for that matter are not killing their host. It's the cytokine storm that does the killing.
Most effective drug to stop/prevent cytokine storm is nicotine which of course will never be used by the medical community. If there's ever a serious viral pandemic and I get a fever...well me and nicorette
https://media1.tenor.com/images/07a7ab10af7509759aa6d9decdf2c21e/tenor.gif?itemid=4123623
I said this jokingly earlier but I wasn't really joking. Just as suspected...
"Clinical features of patients infected with 2019 novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China." The article notes the correlation of high levels of circulating inflammatory cytokines, or "cytokine storm," with severity of illness in patients infected with the Wuhan coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Nicoderm and nicorette will be part of my coronavirus pandemic prep closet
Targeting the “Cytokine Storm” for Therapeutic Benefit
Nicotine is a nonselective agonist of the α7Ach receptor and is able to suppress the production of proinflammatory cytokines by mimicking the binding of acetylcholine. It has been demonstrated that nicotine can selectively reduce the inflammatory response in a number of infection scenarios, including Legionella pneumophila (54) and Chlamydia pneumoniae (55) infection; however, it is highly unlikely that nicotine will ever be used clinically due to its toxicity, addictive nature, and lack of specificity.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3592351/
And if only Lydia had been a smoker...
Activation of the Cholinergic Antiinflammatory Pathway Reduces Ricin-Induced Mortality and Organ Failure in Mice
Our results have demonstrated that nicotine reduces organ failure and improves mouse survival following ricin exposure. The protective effect of nicotine appears to be associated with its antiinflammatory effect, suggesting a possible therapeutic strategy of activating the cholinergic antiinflammatory pathway following ricin exposure to protect against multiple organ failure. Nicotine treatment reduced levels of the inflammatory cytokine TNF-α and improved both liver and kidney function while reducing the oxidative stress observed in these organs following ricin exposure. The overall effect of nicotine on maintaining liver and kidney function while reducing systemic inflammation may account for the reduced mortality observed with ricin exposure.

This one had the potential. Luckily it didn't arise until winter so the timing is on the worlds side. By next coronavirus season the world will have quick tests, treatments and possibly vaccine will be in place. All well tested courtesy of the Chinese people.

Likelihood the mortality rate given by the Chinese is even probably high because numbers come from people who have been in bad enough shape to seek help. We know the flu better in the US because more people with the disease are seen in the Drs office or in the hospital.

That's not correct from what is currently known. It's the cytokine storm response, basically massive over reaction by immune system. See post #307
The length of the infection before it's produces the response is what seems unusual. See post #308

Leaky international cordon may mean equivalent of worst flu season in modern times

But outside the Asian giant the numbers remain a fraction of that,
a trend Harvard’s Marc Lipsitch (https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/marc-lipsitch/) views with suspicion.
Lipsitch thinks it is just a matter of time before the virus spreads widely internationally,
which means nations so far only lightly hit should prepare for its eventual arrival in force

We have already been through this.
The secondary infections can cause a secondary immune reaction and the primary so called storm (scary word needed) is not well understood
What is required of the immune system early in the infection, when the pathogen is dividing rapidly and reaching high infectious loads, may be very different from what is needed later, possibly only a few hours later, when either the pathogen is at steady state or the pathogen load is falling due to either the effects of appropriate antimicrobial therapy or the clearance of the pathogen by the immune response. Treating patients with the “right” immunomodulating drug but at the “wrong” time could worsen the clinical outcome. We still do not understand the delicate nature of this rapidly changing immune response, and until we do, it is unlikely that we will develop rational therapies that target the exact phase of the immune cascade
So chew on that nicotine at the proper time.
There are a load of articles on this. And it’s a mess.

The cause of death from most secondary infections is due to your bodies own defense going overboard as we have already in addition to the primary viral infection.

Could the new coronavirus really kill 50 million people worldwide?
If the spread of the new coronavirus (https://www.newscientist.com/term/coronavirus/) isn’t halted, it could infect 60 per cent of the world’s population and kill 1 in 100 of those infected – around 50 million people.
It has been estimated that 24 per cent of the world’s population (https://doi.org/10.1111/irv.12074) was infected by the 2009 H1N1 swine flu pandemic, despite older people having pre-existing immunity because they had been exposed to similar viruses.

Paper masks are over $100 a pack on amazon now...and dont do a damn think to keep virus's out. They are literally a one time use made to keep the surgeon or nurses from breathing directly on the patient during surgery and are disposed afterwards. Effective use to prevent a virus getting in is only about 20 minutes because they get water logged with breath vapor and start drawing the breath in through cracks where the mask doesnt seal perfectly.

This post could all be bullshit and id have no idea but it always seemed bizarre to me that people think thin paper masks that doctors use and throw away after a few hours tops are some ironclad shield that’ll prevent you from inhaling any airborne virus.
If you’re on a 5 hour flight next to someone with a virus this contagious that mask isn’t doing shit :lol

The paper mask in question absolutely will protect against droplet transmitted illnesses (like the flu) if used in short intervals - five hours is asking for too much. Airborne illnesses (like TB) require a much different mask and the cheap paper one won't do a damn thing.
I don't really know how this current strain of coronavirus is transmitted, but I can tell you that the confirmed case in San Antonio is being treated similar to TB as far as PPE and isolation goes.

Just need a dupps maks
This post could all be bullshit and id have no idea but it always seemed bizarre to me that people think thin paper masks that doctors use and throw away after a few hours tops are some ironclad shield that’ll prevent you from inhaling any airborne virus.
If you’re on a 5 hour flight next to someone with a virus this contagious that mask isn’t doing shit :lol
It can make an otherwise "meh" looking asian chick look like a "hey.. what's your name" looking asian chick though, just through imagination. The muslims are onto something.
The airport security looks at me weird when I go in with SCBA though.

For industries that rely on China it will be multi quarter (or they will use the excuse for multiple quarters) for sure. IMO fuck them, they deserve it.
For others, it will be a blip, as they already are deploying contingency plans like shifting production to less leveraged areas/nations, and will ramp quickly again once China is back online. And don't underestimate the power of billions of people who are trained/want/need to work to work even harder once they are back in the saddle. The decision to ban wildlife trade and “eliminate the bad habits of eating wild animals” was made by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, which said the full ban was done to carry out instructions by Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to the report. "In addition, we have hired the great Emmanuel Ginobili of Spurs to swat the bats. He has much championship experience and is very clutch at killing the bats." declared President Xi.

COULD THE CORONAVIRUS STORM SINK THE CRUISE INDUSTRY?
Dream holidays have become a nightmare for cruise passengers caught in the middle of China’s coronavirus outbreak.
More than 50 cruises (and counting) have been canceled,
seven ports closed and
thousands of vacationers’ plans disrupted as authorities scramble to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
“If it dies down now then it’s probably manageable,” says Alex Brignall, an analyst at Redburn covering the cruise industry.
“If it gets outside Asia on a cruise ship, it will be very different.”

San Francisco's mayor has declared a state of emergency as the coronavirus continues to spread
Mayor London Breed announced Tuesday afternoon (https://sfmayor.org/article/city-san-francisco-moves-proactively-prepare-possible-novel-coronavirus-activity-community) that while there haven't been any confirmed cases of the coronavirus disease, COVID-19, in San Francisco so far,
the city needs to be prepared in case the virus spreads to the area.
"The global picture is changing rapidly, and we need to step-up preparedness," Breed said in a statement.
"We see the virus spreading in new parts of the world every day, and we are taking the necessary steps to protect San Franciscans from harm."
The mayor's state of emergency allows the city
to ramp up emergency planning,
redirecting employees and resources in the case of an outbreak in San Francisco.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned (https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/health-officials-coronavirus-spread-us-trump-says-contained-china-2020-2-1028938088) that a coronavirus outbreak in the United States would be inevitable.

Trash and the Repugs have installed a bunch of political kakistocratic hacks through the Exec and Federal judiciary since knowledge and expertise are despised by Repugs, whose entire "governing" strategy is to do as bad a job as possible, to weaken/castrate govt, to turn people against government, and let the oligarchy pickup the pieces.

The Louisiana Republican excoriated Wolf as he deferred to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on questions ranging from how far the US government was to developing a vaccine for the virus to how many people are predicted to become infected.
"You're supposed to keep us safe. And the American people deserve some straight answers on the coronavirus — and I'm not getting them from you," Kennedy said to Wolf during the tense exchange before a Senate appropriations subcommittee.
Wolf replied, "I disagree."
"We do anticipate the number will grow. I don't have an exact figure for you, though," Wolf said when asked about the potential spread of the virus in the US.
As Wolf struggled to provide a clear answer, Kennedy eventually went on to say, "Don't you think you ought to check on that, as the head of Homeland Security?"
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday urged Americans to prepare for a coronavirus crisis in the US. The CDC said the number of cases in the US had risen to 57 as of Tuesday, per CNN.
"It's not so much a question of if this will happen any more, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness," Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, said during a media briefing.
Wolf, like many other Cabinet-level officials in the Trump administration, has been serving as the head of a massive government agency in an acting capacity (without Senate confirmation) for months.
The Trump administration has set up a coronavirus task force, which is being spearheaded by HHS Secretary Alex Azar and national security adviser Robert C. O'Brien, to coordinate the US government's handling of the virus.
https://news.yahoo.com/trumps-acting-homeland-security-chief-221103121.html
What is fucking ironic here is that the authoritarian impulses that fucked China in their response are playing out here, right in front of us.
Incompetant, unconfirmed jackasses have been put in place all over the government, because Trump KNOWS they are incompetant and can't get them past his lackeys in the Senate. They are that bad.
This guy can't say the truth for fear of upsetting Trump.
... and people will die. How many more people will die due to this administration's incompetence that would have otherwise?

I accept your surrender. I take it you can't find any 8%+ two-day corrections that don't involve major crashes.
Corrections in general are common, as you noted. The speed of this one... isn't.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.33% was off 929.92 points, or 3.3%, at its Tuesday nadir, at 27,030.88, a day after the blue-chip benchmark suffered a drop of more than 1,000 points, representing the third worst one-day point drop in the index’s 124-year history.
The Dow finished Tuesday down nearly 880 points to mark its sharpest-ever two-session slide in point terms, losing about 1,910 points, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

No surrender here... 2018 and 2016 just in recent memory. The speed the market went up was almost as fast as it corrected. The underlying economy is fine.

Germany 'heading for epidemic' as virus spreads faster outside China
Germany said on Wednesday that it was heading for a coronavirus epidemic and
could no longer trace all cases,
as the number of new infections inside China - the source of the outbreak -
was for the first time overtaken by those elsewhere.

Eyup. Happy to acknowledge that.
As for the "underlying economy", I would say "mostly".
How long will that "underlying economy" keep going if China suffers a debt bubble collapse due to its shadow banking sector failing, and/or Western supply chains that depend on China can't get their goods?
Remember most debt risk in China is completely off the books.

What is "Shadow Banking" anyway?
China's "shadow banking" sector has long been regarded as the unstable slope on China's debt mountain, just waiting for some change in the weather or distant tremor to bring it all crashing down. Before 2011 "shadow banking" was not particularly significant, but as the liquidity crunch took hold, it became an important conduit for finance. As the name implies, shadow banking happens out of sight, or at least, outside the purview of regulators, and consequently is usually thought of as an activity that is tolerated by the state, but happens between private actors. Traditionally understood, "shadow banking" is banking-like activity conducted by unregulated institutions or in unregulated conditions, which in China mainly comprises a range of activities from wealth management products to investment trusts.

It's entirely possible that this is a somewhat overhyped crisis that the White House should still be taking a lot more seriously than it is.
This White House is uniquely un-equipped to handle actual crises. They gutted the task force put in place after the Ebola scare, and never replaced it.
There is your irony.
The places in the US with the worst access to health care, i.e. rural areas, will be the places least able to deal with the disease, and that will be made worse by the gross incompetence of the guy they voted for.
