Seriously how are you people looking at China, Korea, Italy, Iran and thinking they're so much better than us?I didn't say any of those countries was better than us, just that some countries seem to have some idea what to do, you know, like they were somewhat prepared.
The US response seems haphazard, politically directed, and somewhat improvised.
It needn't have been.

China seems to have things under control by means of massive monitoring and lockdown, intrusive but working. Italy is now implementing a lesser form of quarantine. USA nothing. Trump doesn't want the perception of a problem that would damage the economy. He and we will likely pay the price. The worst person in the world to have in control in a serious crisis.

All of those countries have gone into complete panic mode. Just randomly spraying the streets with disinfectants. Well maybe except Iran where they are spreading it on purpose to prove they ain't scared of no virus.
Would you like a military blockade of Seattle. Or maybe Australia's plan of filling up stadiums with infected.

China had SARS, tbh. Even if CDC had the public health studies/top university grads lead, they sure as hell had a reason to catch up in that department. Plus they are proud af. No way they didn't have a crazy ass plan like the one they enacted swiftly. If we closed down Seattle or whatever people would be up in arms here. Much less exposed the amount of government surveillence needed to go door to door testing 2 weeks worth of contacts for each infected person.

Exposes our governmental agencies lack of leadership/leaders appointed by presidents with political interests/leaders with no history in the field. Also, see how our intel/military leaders were warned by multiple groups (Russia, etc) before 9/11 and still we lost so much life here. Then the response was to force people to take off belts and shoes at TSA checkpoints. And go claim oil patches for Cheney / set up McDOnalds in Iraq, when everyone knew OBL was long gone.

two off the top of my head with questionable histories, appointed as political favors:
Benjamin Solomon Carson Sr (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Carson). (born September 18, 1951) is an American politician, author and former neurosurgeon serving as the 17th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development since 2017, under the Trump Administration.
Elisabeth Dee DeVos (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betsy_DeVos) (/dəˈvɒs/; née Prince; born January 8, 1958) is the 11th and current United States Secretary of Education since 2017 (...) DeVos is married to Dick DeVos, the former CEO of the multi-level marketing company Amway, and is the daughter-in-law of Amway's billionaire co-founder, Richard DeVos
One as an obvious political favor, then ousted when he showed some backbone (one of the only first appointees I thought was decent):
Rex Wayne Tillerson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rex_Tillerson) (born March 23, 1952) is an American engineer and energy executive who served as the 69th United States Secretary of State from February 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018, under President Donald Trump
Honorable mention, one of the very best nominated by Trump, then ousted because he showed an opinion of his own. One of the best Secretaries of Defense I've ever seen nominated (based on history). Sad he's gone/we are less safe in his absence:
James Norman Mattis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Mattis) (born September 8, 1950) is an American veteran and former government official who served as the 26th United States Secretary of Defense from January 2017 through January 2019. A retired United States Marine Corps general, Mattis served in the Persian Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, and the Iraq War.
Mattis was commissioned in the Marine Corps through the Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps after graduating from Central Washington University. A career Marine, he gained a reputation among his peers for "intellectualism", and eventually advanced to the rank of general. From 2007 to 2010 he commanded the United States Joint Forces Command and concurrently served as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Transformation. He was Commander of United States Central Command from 2010 to 2013 with Admiral Bob Harward serving as his Deputy Commander. After retiring from the military, he served in several private sector roles, including as a board member of Theranos.[4]
Mattis was nominated as Secretary of Defense by President-elect Donald Trump, and confirmed by the Senate on January 20, 2017

No, the CDC just fucked up. Dr. Messonier admitted it and apologized weeks ago when they were still doing biweekly press conferences. It's still posted on their website
The U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services declared the SARS-CoV-2 virus a U.S. public health emergency on Friday, January 31, 2020. FDA issued the EUA on February 4, 2020. IRR began distribution of the test kits to states, but shortly thereafter performance issues were identified related to a problem in the manufacturing of one of the reagents which led to laboratories not being able to verify the test performance. CDC is remanufacturing the reagents with more robust quality control measures. New tests will be distributed once this issue has been addressed. CDC continues to perform initial and confirmatory testing.
Stated in the press briefing today, the test is considered an essential test which means insurance, medicare, medicaid are all required to fully cover it. Those christian sharing plans maybe not, depnds on what Jesus says.
Anyways, as I said soon the test will be available to any physician to order. Get ready for the confirmed count to skyrocket, not that it makes any difference except adding to the panic factor.

Yeah, no prior data prepares you for a never before seen virus. That's why there's no vaccine.
The spread of the virus Darrin, the spread of the virus. This is what most epidemiologists do. And then accurately communicate what we might expect.
The people who do what we might expect to see in the future you are on the molecular biology end. Every virus could be called novel.
The people who study viruses are called, virologists. They can overlap, but these are the people who are important in proposing a proper test, proposing a proper vaccine. Somebody has to figure out how the virus itself works on a molecular level.
So again, you are just wrong.

They are incredibly important.
If you know a person with clear symptoms and you have an accurate test you can go back and find out who they have been in the closest contact with and specifically test these people. We can find out so much working backwards.
You dont need to test people who have just have a runny nose as seems to be presented. Or just want to be tested for the hell of it.

WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT. YOU CAN TRUST US.
For weeks, federal health officials told states that only the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a few other public labs could test patients for the new coronavirus.
That was because test kits that the CDC had sent to state and local labs across the country to do their own screening had a flaw that caused inaccurate results.
“It was a malfunctioning chemical,” said Kelly Wroblewski, director of infectious disease programs at the Assn. of Public Health Laboratories.
Now, officials say they have made changes so that California labs and three dozen other public labs across the country will be able to start testing for the virus.
The lack of tests for the coronavirus was made clear this week when a patient was diagnosed with the virus who had not traveled or been in contact with anyone infected. Doctors who treated the woman at UC Davis Medical Center said they had asked the CDC to test the woman but then waited days for that to happen.
The CDC’s flawed test kits stalled the surveillance testing that federal officials had said Feb. 14 would begin in Los Angeles, San Francisco and three other cities. CDC officials said then that the surveillance tests were aimed at finding patients in the community who had been unknowingly infected with the virus.
But by Thursday, fewer than 500 tests had been performed in the U.S., according to the CDC. In comparison, South Korea says it has been testing thousands of people a day.
“If you test less than 500 people, you can’t say at all what is going on,” said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota
Osterholm said the delay in testing could mean that many cases have gone undetected. “The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence,” he said. “I expect a sizable jump in cases in the next few weeks.”
Said Wroblewski, “It’s unfortunate there was a delay with testing. Earlier is always better, but we were waiting for a quality test.”
Some state and local labs wanted to use their own tests they had developed in-house, Wroblewski said. But that was not possible after the federal government declared the coronavirus, known as COVID-19, a public health emergency at the end of January. After the emergency declaration, any test had to receive authorization from the federal Food and Drug Administration to ensure its accuracy.
After an appeal from the public labs association, federal officials said Thursday they were making changes so that 40 state and local labs would be able to test for the virus.
Wroblewski explained that the original test had three parts. The problematic third part, aimed at testing more broadly for coronaviruses and not just for COVID-19, gave off false readings. She said some labs will now be able to use the test without using the third part. At the same time, the CDC has modified the test and is manufacturing new kits that it will soon be sending to public labs.
She said she does not believe the test is less accurate when just two of the three parts are used.
Officials hope the 40 labs will be able to test for the virus by early next week — which would allow an estimated 4,000 tests a day, Wroblewski said. “We’re in a position to start the surveillance testing, I hope.”
Wroblewski said the association’s goal is to have 100 public labs performing the tests, which would allow 10,000 patients to be tested each day.
State officials said late Friday they expected to get a shipment of test kits to initially cover 1,200 people.
Some commercial labs are also working to develop tests for COVID-19, said Julie Khani, president of the American Clinical Laboratory Assn.
But only the CDC and other public labs are authorized to test for the virus in the U.S.
“At this time, commercial laboratories are not collecting, processing or transporting specimens from patients suspected of having, or confirmed to have, COVID-19,” Khani said.

Im guessing they think it’s more important to get good results now because the virus will spread regardless unless somehow the warming of spring causes less bunching. Basically, the masks are only good to remind you not to touch your face with your hands. That's typically how it spreads. The virus stays on surfaces (door knobs, shopping cart handles, gas pump handles, etc. for a week) you touch it and then pick your nose...bingo. You have covid19.

Trump Massively Lies About the Number of People in the US With Coronavirus: ‘We’re Really Down to Probably About 10
President Trump seems to have wished a vaccine for the new coronavirus into existence. “I think that whole situation will start working out,” he told reporters at a press conference in India. “We’re very close to a vaccine.”
At a Senate hearing that same day, Trump’s acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf took a similar line, promising a vaccine would be ready within “several months.”
At his latest rally in South Carolina, Trump said, “Things happen. Who would have thought of this two weeks ago, four weeks ago, that this could be going on, but things happen in life, and you have to be prepared, and you have to be flexible, and you have to go out and get it, and my guys, we have the best professionals in the world, and we are so ready.”
The CDC has been monitoring the coronavirus since December 2019. They have been issuing a steady stream of public warnings since early January 2020. The CDC warned that the coronavirus could be spread by human contact more than a month ago. They began public health screenings at airports on January 17, 2020.
The coronavirus has been known about for months. Trump wasn’t aware of it until 2-4 weeks ago, because he gets his information from watching cable news.
On Friday night, Donald Trump called the coronavirus epidemic a “hoax” by Democrats who “failed” to bring him down over his collusion with Russia, or the extortion of Ukraine that led to his impeachment.
g his positively incoherent press event on Thursday, Trump already knew that there were sixty cases of coronavirus within the United States. More importantly, he knew that the CDC had just identified the first case of “community spread” in the country — a case that didn’t come in from overseas, and wasn’t obviously tied to someone who had caught it outside the country. Before his speech in South Carolina, three more cases had been identified, including another case of community spread. However, Trump insisted on telling his rally audience that there were still only “fifteen cases in this huge country.”
President Donald Trump and Larry Kudlow, the director of Trump’s National Economic Council, aren’t doctors, but they play them on TV. As the coronavirus epidemic spirals into a pandemic, causing a plunge in the U.S. stock market, Trump and Kudlow, a former CNBC TV host, are cynically spreading disinformation about the contagion.
“We have contained this. I won’t say airtight, but it’s pretty close to airtight,” Larry Kudlow told CNBC Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, Trump tweeted
Lie after lie after lie after lie.

Criticizing my government's slow response and lack of preparedness isn't a freakout, but there is something twitchy about your refusal to acknowledge that any mosstep has been made or that making shit up on TV might be making things worse wrt to any eventual panic.
The people need accurate info from their government in a public health emergency, Instead we're getting propaganda and disinfo straight from the top. If the people freak because their government has squandered its credibilty, that's hardly to be blamed on anonymous bulletin board posters who point it out, but def more on public officials who mislead the people in TV.

CORONAVIRUS CASES TESTED IN U.S. REMOVED FROM CDC WEBSITE
https://www.newsweek.com/coronavirus-cases-tested-us-removed-cdc-website-according-congressman-american-people-1490158
They removed it, because the number, practically nil, would make them look bad. The tests will not be widely available until later this month at the earliest.
So the virus is spreading, undetected. You know this. I know this. The administration is trying to hide it, because they don't want the general population to know this. Seems like a pertinent bit of information to make decisions on.

Did Rush say that or do you have some personal experience here?
By what metric are you using to make this assertion?
Back it up or fold like Spurtacular and Cosmored.
https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/coronavirus-the-latest-attempt-to-prove-trumps-a-chump/
Okay class, let’s start by contrasting the media-induced panic of 2020 with 2009 under Obama. The first cases of the swine flu, H1N1, appeared in April 2009. By the time Obama finally declared a national emergency that fall, the CDC reported that 50 million Americans, one in six people, had been infected and 10,000 Americans had died.
In the early months of the disease, Obama had no secretary of health and human services or appointees in any of the department’s 19 key posts. No commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, no surgeon general, no CDC director. The vacancy at the CDC was especially important, as in the early days of the crisis, only they could test for the virus; states weren’t allowed until later. DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, not a medical doctor, led the federal effort. Sound familiar?
The first real H1N1 cases appeared in Mexico, though Mexicans were never forbidden to enter the U.S. And while the CDC recommended against travel there, the primary danger cited was kidnapping for ransom. Some 66 percent of Americans, supported by the media, thought the president was protecting them even as 4,000 Americans died before a vaccine was even distributed.
The emergency proclamation it took Obama seven months to declare was issued by Trump within 30 days of the coronavirus being found abroad. He announced a temporary suspension of entry into the U.S. of foreign nationals who posed a risk for transmission (CNN warned: “the travel ban could stigmatize countries and ethnicities”). And yes, Trump encouraged everyone to wash their hands.
Anybody here remember the media freaking out over Obama’s initial response, which was also to suggest everyone wash their hands? Anyone find evidence of national panic? No. So why did the media cover essentially an identical story so very differently?
Now let’s turn to the timing in 2020. The crisis arrived when the media decided it was time for a crisis. Though the virus had dominated headlines in Asia since mid-January, American media relegated it to business news. In late February, the main “Trump” story was still Russiagate II, the faux revelation that Russians were meddling in another election. The lackluster Democratic debate at the end of February invoked Putin many times. The virus barely came up.
Then the New York Times sent up the Bat Signal the day after the debate, an article titled “Let’s Call It Trumpvirus” (subtlety is not required for propaganda). An effort was born to blame Trump for the outbreak and essentially declare his chances of reelection done. The critical change had little to do with the virus itself, simply with the decision by the media to elevate the story from the business section to the front page. Only a handful of Americans had died and about half the known U.S. cases had arrived as evacuees from Japan (should we even have left them go there?). Of course, the numbers quickly went up, but that’s why we say “going viral” when your Instagram blows up.
You’ll see in your textbooks another example of how propaganda works, the reporting of initial problems with the CDC coronavirus test kits. One typical headline claimed, “The U.S. Badly Bungled Coronavirus Testing.” But the problems were old news almost as soon as the stories were written. Within a week, nearly a million tests would be available.
The follow-on stories screamed about Trump cutting funding to the CDC, most of which was actually only proposed. Then the stories were merged—Trump cut CDC funding and thus not enough kits were available. Not only were both pieces largely untrue individually, the fusion of the two was grossly false. The media treated developments as raw material to mock Trump, like late-night comedians trolling the news for monologue fodder.
The problem with the testing kits was a technical one involving chemical reagents and factory contamination. CDC is a massive institution. Who if anyone there made any “bungled” decisions? Would they have really made a better choice with different funding? This is how the media acts when they seek to fix the blame, not the problem.
The propaganda surrounding how the government initially handled the coronavirus was also obvious, what with the false “who is in charge” question the media asked. The vice president was assigned to head up the task force. This is the kind of thing VPs do: bring gravitas, make sure a whole of government approach has the bureaucratic firepower it needs, and so on. The propaganda instead hyper-focused on Mike Pence’s “disbelief in science.”
For “proof,” the stories settled on Pence supposedly creating an HIV epidemic while governor of Indiana. The reality was different. Pence took office opposed to needle exchanges. When dirty needles shared among opioid users in rural Scott County were linked to 71 cases of HIV transmission, Pence responded to the new information by changing his policy and authorizing needle exchange in Scott and four other counties. The reality seems much closer to seeing an ideological stance changed by science than the other way around.
Meanwhile, the media largely ignored those whom Pence chose for his task force. One was Dr. Deborah Birx, a career medical professional nominated by Obama in 2014 as the U.S. global AIDS coordinator. She also served as head of the global HIV/AIDS division at CDC, and was an immunology researcher at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and an Army colonel. You want to inspire confidence, you profile Dr. Birx; you want to sow discord, you misrepresent Mike Pence’s decisions years ago.

‘Maybe Pence can pray them into existence’:
Trump slammed with mockery after breaking promise on coronavirus test rollou
the Trump administration won’t be able to meet its goal of having a million coronavirus tests available by the end of the week.
“There won’t be a million people to get a test by the end of the week,” Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) said.
“It’s way smaller than that. And still, at this point, it’s still through public health departments.”
The news contradicts
Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn, who told senators that the U.S. would have the “capacity” to perform up to a million tests by the end of the week.
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar reinforced that promise as well.
It was patently obvious to anyone who heard that ridiculous promise that Trump had no idea what he was talking about.
Breaking news would be if he actually said something intelligent.
So in other words, they lied again
Yes, trump always lies when his mouth opens
Inept and incompetent
Shocking! Maybe Pence will pray them into existence.
Raise your hand if you are surprised. Thank you Washington State and New York State to have the where with all to get FDA approval to make your own tests.
... That the Administration tried to block.
Of course not! And thank Trump for firing the pandemic response team two years ago.

That is a link, ironically, to a propaganda piece deriding others for spreading propaganda.
That said, it made some pretty good points, a few flawed comparisons notwithstanding. Thanks.
I have come to conclude a lot of the coverage is obviously stilted, and even unfair to Trump, and this cemented that.
Trump is still a moron. He still lies to make himself look good, and to distract from fuck ups, as he has repeatedly here. Pence is still an overly religious jackass who would readily impose a form of Christian sharia if he thought he could get away with it.
Shame that you don't seem to care about media bias and lying when it is something you agree with.
The problem is that even when the coverage is fair when it comes to Trumps fuck ups, conservatives pretend it isn't and attack the media anyways.

I think he is trying, in his own way, to say that it won't be bad for most people. Ham-handed.
I am guessing that the overall death rate will end up lower once we get a lot more data. Given that I have seen reports of asymptomatic people spreading it, I am guessing that any estimate of the death toll early on is going to be overstated, since we are missing a large chunk of data for the denominator. (number of fatalities/total number who get infected)
Whatever happens, or whatever the truth is, you can probably expect Trump to lie about it.

masks only useful for the infected to block their toxic aerosols
not very effective as protection for healthy people
Also they are disposable, so not protective if:
- you take it off at any point, touch the outside and then your face and put it back on (which I see so many people doing, like taking it off to talk)
- you use it for longer than recommended / re-use it after a single use, since it is a single-use disposable, and its outer surfaces can have the virus on them, or you compromise the surface by sleeping/leaning on it/crushing/bending it out of shape
- you don't cinch it down real tight so as to properly filter airflow, versus drawing air around it, or have a substandard one like the ones we see with Hello Kitty and shit on them
so basically they are what they say they are. Dust masks for particulates, and only useful as one time use disposable items. With the boxes going for >$100 each due to supply, it's likely you only have a box or two (perhaps from being prepared), but that would only last so long if used properly, and only do so much.

As of March 5 Australia has recorded 60 cases of infection and two elderly people have died from the virus.
That's not widespread. We are nearing the end of our respiratory illness season and they are nearing the beginning of theirs. I would think some overlap might happen.
Really just have to wait and see if we get lucky.

The only thing I've seen in my local stores is empty shelves for Lysol, Purell, and bottled water. I'm not sure why people are afraid of the tap water.

Yeah the water thing is strange. Probably that's just what they've learned from natural disasters.

IF this is a typical virus then texas should be pretty safe. It's all about how long the virus survives on a surface so it can be transferred. They like 40s and dont like 90s plus. They like air conditioning though. Thoughts and prayers dudes.

Quarantined nurse condemns CDC’s incompetence in blistering statement
a nurse with the Kaiser Permanente hospital network in California
under quarantine for coronavirus released a statement telling the story — and
ripping into the Centers for Disease Control for their handling of the crisis.
“As a nurse, I’m very concerned that not enough is being done to stop the spread of the coronavirus,”
“I know because I am currently sick and in quarantine after caring for a patient who tested positive.
I’m awaiting ‘permission’ from the federal government to allow for my testing,
even after my physician and county health professional ordered it.”
The nurse volunteered to treat this patient,
“assuming that if something happened to me, of course I too would be cared for.”
But that was not what happened.
But the National CDC would not initiate testing.
They said they would not test me because
if I were wearing the recommended protective equipment,
then I wouldn’t have the coronavirus …
What a ridiculous and uneducated response from the department that is in charge of our health in this country.”

The bad places are going to be those cities that just let homeless camp everywhere.Walk us through it, why do you think homeless encampments are more dangerous than crowded workplaces, schools, hospitals, trains, planes and buses and public events?
Do you have some empirical basis for casting shade on the homeless, or is this more PFA epidemiology?

Hell, a busy restaurant probably spreads more disease daily than homeless encampments. More contact with the public, too poor to self-quarantine.

I don't know. A big part of what makes this virus so successful is that it doesn't have a really high kill rate like say Ebola or MERS. It's why you can have a ton of asymptomatic carriers and why it's impossible to contain. Natural selection isn't going to favor a virus that kills its host so easily. If something is going to kill on the order of a billion I'd put my money on famine.
