I like that confidence. :lol

Which is why I like science.
If you dont point out YOUR OWN weaknesses in a conjecture, its on you.
Because someone else will shit on you.

If politicians would only do this with proposals and people could accept the skepticism as thoughtful.
But no, its a W or L. On a sports board. Totally binary and arbitrary.

Btw I did not point out my own weakness in the argument because I just dont know enough.
Or I know enough to know I dont know.

Or I know enough to know I dont know.

Always a fun place to be. I know enough physics to know I don't know a lot of physics. I know enough Japanese to know I don't know a lot of Japanese. Biology though, no fucking clue outside of knowing a little bit about differential equations often used in it.

Biology is a huge mess.
Way too many variables to model.
But we try and fail and sometimes get easy things correct.

Which is why I also prefer physics without air and friction. And only really mechanics. Nothing modern, especially the General Theory, because honestly I finally figured out I could never learn the math to get the proper models into my head. You cant use words, they break down. Metaphors and similes break down. Its not like anything... This is what frustrates me about Tyson. He makes these movies and writes to give people a feeling like they know it. But, if you presented someone with a question that took synthesis of his ideas given in a book or movie, you cant answer it. He does not want to turn common folk like me off, but just say it for Gods sake.

"You will not fully understand this because you dont have the math background, but I can titillate you with these mind blowing scenarios"

Just say it.
We can take it.

Before Virus Outbreak, a Cascade of Warnings Went Unheeded

Government exercises, including one last year, made

clear that the U.S. was not ready for a pandemic like the coronavirus. But little was done.

"WASHINGTON — The outbreak of the respiratory virus began in China and

was quickly spread around the world by air travelers, who ran high fevers.

In the United States, it was first detected in Chicago, and 47 days later, the World Health Organization declared a pandemic.

By then it was too late:

110 million Americans were expected to become ill,

leading to 7.7 million hospitalized and

586,000 dead."

That scenario, code-named “Crimson Contagion” and imagining an influenza pandemic, was simulated by the Trump administration’s Department of Health and Human Services in

a series of exercises that ran from last January to August.

The simulation’s sobering results — contained in a draft report dated October 2019 (https://int.nyt.com/data/documenthelper/6824-2019-10-key-findings-and-after/05bd797500ea55be0724/optimized/full.pdf#page=1) that has not previously been reported — drove home just

how underfunded,

underprepared and

uncoordinated the federal government

would be for a life-or-death battle with a virus for which no treatment existed.

Having the intellectual honesty to Pointing out the weakness in your case.

Wouldn't that be refreshing here?

Makes me wonder about why so few conservatives types are scientists.

Modern conservatives never admit weaknesses in their case, if they are even aware of it. They cherry pick and strawman as a matter of habit. Concealing and distorting is just the way they argue and think, neither of which goes down well in a scientific setting. It's almost as if dishonesty is part of their self-identity.

As prescribed by world famous MIT professor Dr Trash

Hydroxychloroquine toxicity

Risk Factors

Hydroxychloroquine retinopathy is most influenced by daily dose and duration of use. Risk for toxicity is less with <5.0 mg/kg real weight/day for hydroxychloroquine and <2.3 mg/kg real weight/day for chloroquine[2] (https://eyewiki.aao.org/Hydroxychloroquine_toxicity#cite_note-:2-2). Patients are at low risk during the first 5 years of treatment. Other major risk factors include renal disease, concominant drug use (e.g., tamoxifen), and macular disease which is thought to potentially affect screening and susceptibility to Plaquenil and chloroquine. Age, liver disease, and genetic factors (e.g., polymorphisms in the cytochrome P450 gene which may impact blood concentrations) are thought to be lesser risk factors associated with toxicity risk[2] (https://eyewiki.aao.org/Hydroxychloroquine_toxicity#cite_note-:2-2)[4] (https://eyewiki.aao.org/Hydroxychloroquine_toxicity#cite_note-4). Kidney and liver disease predispose to hydroxychloroquine toxicity due to impaired clearance of the drug. Old age is hypothesized to contribute to overall risk due to the natural aging process of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), causing the RPE to be more sensitive to toxic drugs. Similarly, concomitant retinal conditions predispose to toxicity due to predamaged cellular elements. At recommended doses, the risk of toxicity up to 5 years is under 1%and up to 10 years is under 2%, but rises to nearly 20% after 20 years. However, if a patient has not demonstrated toxicity after the 20-year point, he/she only has a 4% risk of developing toxicity the subsequent year.[2] (https://eyewiki.aao.org/Hydroxychloroquine_toxicity#cite_note-:2-2) Keratopathy is rare (<1%) in patients treated with typical doses of hydroxychloroquine. Ciliary body dysfunction is rare and no risk factors are identified.
General Pathology

Hydroxychloroquine retinopathy causes destruction of macular rods and cones with sparing of foveal cones. This pattern provides the typical bullseye appearance. RPE migrates into the areas of destructed photoreceptors, causing pigment laden cells to be detected in the outer nuclear and outer plexiform layers[1] (https://eyewiki.aao.org/Hydroxychloroquine_toxicity#cite_note-:1-1). Hydroxychloroquine keratopathy is caused by deposition of unmodified hydroxychloroquine salts within the epithelium[1] (https://eyewiki.aao.org/Hydroxychloroquine_toxicity#cite_note-:1-1).
Pathophysiology

Hydroxychloroquine binds to melanin, accumulates in the RPE, and remains there for long periods of time. It is directly toxic to the RPE, causing cellular damage and atrophy[2] (https://eyewiki.aao.org/Hydroxychloroquine_toxicity#cite_note-:2-2). This occurs due to disruption of RPE metabolism, specifically from lysosomal damage[5] (https://eyewiki.aao.org/Hydroxychloroquine_toxicity#cite_note-:4-5), and reduced phagocytic activity toward shed photoreceptor outer segments. Accumulation of photoreceptor outer segments leads to RPE degeneration, migration into the outer retina, and finally photoreceptor loss[1] (https://eyewiki.aao.org/Hydroxychloroquine_toxicity#cite_note-:1-1).

If we're into anecdotes, I've done plenty of free work in open source projects. It worked out well for the project and for me. Didn't pay the bills, but helped build that resume, and people got to see the work.

Plus, nobody is arguing for 'free'. Doctors all over the world get paid reasonably well, have a good life, and still work in a subsidized system.

Up until a year ago when I was still running my own business, I still contributed to projects for free. I don't think it was devaluing anything, it was mostly fun hobby stuff.

But, again, it's besides the point, as we're not asking anybody to work for free. It's more about having certain caps on earnings. That'll likely never fly in the US, first to admit that, but there's nothing particularly sad about it if you like what you do.

It's fucking frightening. Look at this graph of the logarithm of US deaths from COVID-19. If it was a straight line that would be pretty straightforward exponential growth.

https://i.ibb.co/b5vm0mB/fckme.png

This line was already steeper than Italy's 8 days ago, meaning a more aggressive exponential growth of the form e^(ax), eg with higher number 'a'. Now the slope of the log graph is fucking increasing, it's not even (roughly) a line any more. Now it's more like e^(bx^2 + ax) for some small b.

You do not see any concern with the deaths becoming nonlinear in a log plot? You can't be serious. Our log plot was already steeper than Italy's and now it's increasing in slope. You also have cities and hospitals telling you this is happening, that they're wholly unprepared.

Because they locked down Wuhan. That is encouraging news, though. I think what will guard us against a mass and fast nationwide spread like that in Italy is that we don't have nearly as many population dense clusters as Europe and China. E.G. the virus isn't going to spread across Idaho at a record pace when cases and deaths exponentially grow each day. New York is probably most at risk in this regard.

I went to HEB earlier today. Probably a couple hundred people. Everything still basically wiped out except for stuff like ketchup and motor oil. Plenty of milk and cereal though as if there's a concerted effort to make sure it's stocked.

The Plexi glass they erected in front of the cashier is incredibly retarded. It's about 18x24 and you step one foot to the right to pay with your credit card and you have a free and clear shot to sneeze on them. Especially when they turn to bag your groceries.

BANKS PRESSURE HEALTH CARE FIRMS TO RAISE PRICES ON CRITICAL DRUGS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES FOR CORONAVIRUS

the largest voices in the health care industry stand to gain from billions of dollars in emergency spending on the pandemic, as do the bankers and investors who invest in health care companies.

Over the past few weeks,

investment bankers have been candid on investor calls and during health care conferences about the opportunity to raise drug prices.

a managing director at Barclays Investment Bank, last week peppered executives from Cardinal Health, a health care distributor of N95 masks, ventilators and pharmaceuticals, on whether the company would raise prices on a range of supplies.

Valiquette asked repeatedly about potential price increases on a variety of products.

“one positive” about the coronavirus would be a “silver lining” that Cardinal Health may receive “less questions” about opioid-related lawsuits.

AmerisourceBergen, noted that his company has been actively involved in efforts to push back against political demands to limit the price of pharmaceutical products.

Have no fear, Thread. Just tell them "my body my choice". Most people will be willing to take the test but I know a non insignificant portion won't. If you encounter someone that tests positive and are unwilling to take the test you'll probably need to self isolate to make sure. The system doesn't have to be air tight. It just needs to prevent the hospitals from getting rushed. An "air tight" system like China is not even preferable.

Don’t know about Target but went to the Quarry Whole Foods this morning at about 7:10 . No lines no crowds, maybe 20 people in the store at most. Open for at risks everyday from 7:00 to 8:00 AM. If you or someone you knows is at risk tell them. Of course then it might get crowded.

One added advantage I’m assuming is that people who’ve gone the at risk hours are problem at risks that have been self quarantining.
Just have to run past the cashier. :lol

The main messages from SK and Italy are social isolation and voluminous, frequent testing.

Fox/OAN/rightwing hate media are downplaying the risk for their old, white, decrepit viewers who are at highest risk of death (20%)

Masks only for the infected and for health workers-

If you're not infected but your mask succeeds in protecting you, then touching your infected mask, setting it down on touched surface, infects you and others.

iow, you're wasting masks which are in short supply, AND you are infected.

the 2009 H1N1 in USA had an earlier, broad peak, then a sharp spike later

If we take the 2009 H1N1 pandemic (under a serious Dem administration) in USA as a guideline,

then the higher transmissibility and much higher mortality of covid-19 under a mortal joke of a Repug kakistocracy says USA is in for a real shit show

U.S. intelligence reports from January and February warned about a likely pandemic

U.S. intelligence agencies (aka the hated Deep State) were issuing

ominous, classified warnings in January and February

about the global danger posed by the coronavirus (https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/02/28/what-you-need-know-about-coronavirus/?tid=lk_inline_manual_1&itid=lk_inline_manual_1) while President Trump and lawmakers played down the threat and failed to take action that might have slowed the spread of the pathogen

they did track the spread of the virus in China, and later in other countries, and warned that

Chinese officials appeared to be minimizing the severity of the outbreak.

the characteristics of a globe-encircling pandemic that could

require governments to take swift actions to contain it.

But despite that constant flow of reporting,

Trump continued publicly and privately to play down the threat the virus posed to Americans.

Yes, a "profession" where you don't have to show your work. Just blurt it out under the guise of "my source" & they can say & report anything under the sun.

Didn't read the article yet, but I already intuitively agree with it. I want to stress that we do need to take all precautions necessary (limited social interaction, hygiene, etc) to limit spread and give healthcare a chance to catch up, but the media isn't offering enough counterpoints to the "doom and gloom" scenarios. As I've said in many posts, the mortality rate looks scary when you simply divide deaths by confirmed cases, but it stands to reason there's tens of thousands of unconfirmed cases out there where those persons probably had zero-to-very mild symptoms and have already recovered (Italy was only testing people who exhibited severe symptoms). Our current mortality rate in that regard is 1.2 percent. But what if the virus in reality is 5x as prevalent as the confirmed case count, the mortality rate is around flu levels, which people would emotionally be more comfortable with.

I also think the general populace is under the impression that the stay at home orders and such mean that this virus is so deadly, you need to check out of society or face certain death, when it's just about the oft-repeated "flattening the curve."
