60M Americans got apparently less transmissible and DEFINITELY many times less mortal H1N1 in 2009-2010.
How many Ms of Americans will get covid-19 does your "evidence" guy estimate?
when his article doesn't even refer to the HARD evidence of USA's 2009 H1N1 pandemic?
Why wouldn't the 2009 pandemic indicate what will happen in the 2020 pandemic?

]It is important to note that in both scenarios, the total number of COVID-19 cases will be similar. “Flattening the curve”’s focus is a shock to the healthcare system which can increase fatalities due to capacity constraints. In the long-term, it isn’t infection prevention. Unfortunately, “flattening the curve” doesn’t include other downsides and costs of execution.
As far as facts and only facts I will give you one place he completely missed the boat above.
The costs of execution goes up when doctors and healthcare workers also get sick and supplies run thin. We need shifts, you will see this problem taking place in the NY hospitals already. The costs of execution does go up when you get health care workers getting overwhelmed (no shifts) and supplies asked for at one big moment. So he does NOT understand the cost of execution by prolonging the number of cases. We are seeing it in individual hospitals.
And thats just one part.

Never thought I'd say this...good stuff TSA:tu
Didn't read the article yet, but I already intuitively agree with it. I want to stress that we do need to take all precautions necessary (limited social interaction, hygiene, etc) to limit spread and give healthcare a chance to catch up, but the media isn't offering enough counterpoints to the "doom and gloom" scenarios. As I've said in many posts, the mortality rate looks scary when you simply divide deaths by confirmed cases, but it stands to reason there's tens of thousands of unconfirmed cases out there where those persons probably had zero-to-very mild symptoms and have already recovered (Italy was only testing people who exhibited severe symptoms). Our current mortality rate in that regard is 1.2 percent. But what if the virus in reality is 5x as prevalent as the confirmed case count, the mortality rate is around flu levels, which people would emotionally be more comfortable with.
I also think the general populace is under the impression that the stay at home orders and such mean that this virus is so deadly, you need to check out of society or face certain death, when it's just about the oft-repeated "flattening the curve."
So much this. You can’t have the doom and gloom of asymptomatic spread without discounting the death rate by projected no-to-mild symptomatic cases.

I misspoke a bit, and the writer does editorialize at the end (which is informed by what looks like a Libertarian point-of-view), but I don't find any issues with his data and the extrapolation of the data. All sources are credible.
I think he's weighing what will be the costs of a long term societal shutdown. I do agree with you over him in that regard. We shouldn't resume business as usual quite yet until we get more data and can get a clearer picture of the virus's trajectory and until healthcare systems in densely populated areas catch up. But I do agree that society can't shutdown and citizens can't operate in an eternal "social distancing" paranoia until a vaccine is found. Just not plausible. I find scaremongering, apocalyptic articles that have the "lefty" spin much worse.
We don’t know exactly what this new future looks like, of course. But one can imagine a world in which, to get on a flight, perhaps you’ll have to be signed up to a service that tracks your movements via your phone. The airline wouldn’t be able to see where you’d gone, but it would get an alert if you’d been close to known infected people or disease hot spots. There’d be similar requirements at the entrance to large venues, government buildings, or public transport hubs. There would be temperature scanners everywhere, and your workplace might demand you wear a monitor that tracks your temperature or other vital signs. Where nightclubs ask for proof of age, in future they might ask for proof of immunity—an identity card or some kind of digital verification via your phone, showing you’ve already recovered from or been vaccinated against the latest virus strains.

Yep. The lethality of this virus is massively overstated. Too bad Italy is the "perfect" example for a scaremongering media to use here, but they lazily just flash a bunch of graphs on screen, video of tanks of transporting bodies, and scream, "We're going to wind up just like Italy!" without investigating the details, i.e. Italy didn't test everyone, their population is older on average, many of whom have multiple pre-existing health conditions, multiple family generations often live in the same household, greater population density, and when you zoom out, 4000 of their citizens died vs. their 60 million population. 23K die of the flu every year in Italy.
But again I'll stress I'm not trying to understate. We need to do everything possible to flatten the curve.

More than 99% of Italy’s coronavirus fatalities were people who suffered from previous medical conditions, according to a study by the country’s national health authority.
After deaths from the virus reached more than 2,500, with a 150% increase in the past week, health authorities have been combing through data to provide clues to help combat the spread of the disease.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s government is evaluating whether to extend a nationwide lockdown beyond the beginning of April, daily La Stampa reported Wednesday. Italy has more than 31,500 confirmed cases of the illness.
The new study could provide insight into why Italy’s death rate, at about 8% of total infected people, is higher than in other countries.
The Rome-based institute has examined medical records of about 18% of the country’s coronavirus fatalities, finding that just three victims, or 0.8% of the total, had no previous pathology. Almost half of the victims suffered from at least three prior illnesses and about a fourth had either one or two previous conditions.
More than 75% had high blood pressure, about 35% had diabetes and a third suffered from heart disease.
The median age of the infected is 63 but most of those who die are older. The average age of those who’ve died from the virus in Italy is 79.5. As of March 17, 17 people under 50 had died from the disease. All of Italy’s victims under 40 have been males with serious existing medical conditions.
While data released Tuesday point to a slowdown in the increase of cases, with a 12.6% rise, a separate study shows Italy could be underestimating the real number of cases by testing only patients presenting symptoms.
According to the GIMBE Foundation, about 100,000 Italians have contracted the virus, daily Il Sole 24 Ore reported. That would bring back the country’s death rate closer to the global average of about 2%.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-18/99-of-those-who-died-from-virus-had-other-illness-italy-says?fbclid=IwAR14zh9HjsKkFyz_-rzOUKq6ULIbSS9uvTYKtwc-BnKRx8FG0hCNe4z1xBc
Follow the link. The graph shows that nearly 75% of deaths were of people who had 2 or more pre-existing health conditions.

Primarily because Trump is President in an Election Year. It's the perfect time frame to attack him, they FINALLY got him where they want him. (Media) won't be blamed & can cast off any restraints & go whole hog.
& notice the less of a rapid increase in the death count the harder Media attacks him. It's safe. They're not as apt to attack him at an Italy death count as they are at the actual death count (270).

There is one very serious fallacy in his analysis. He can’t draw some comparisons to China and Korea. Both of those countries had single well confined epicenters with strong confinement and effective tracking and in the case of Korea testing.
The audio I posted included data from a city in Italy, Padua where every single person was tested, how many were positive and how many of the positive were symptomatic, institution of quarantining of positives, retesting of the non-quarantined and how many of those became positive. Also another study in the audio discuses testing patients who were antibody positive, had been infected and developed immunity and how that information could be used. Good listen for those who want some hard data points.
As a subjective impression of what’s going on there’s an article in The NY Times of the devastation happening in NYC hospitals right now soon to get far, far worse.

We need some fear mongering to get people to at least take precautions. Which is needed to flatten the curve while not locking everyone down. A temporary shutdown gives everyone across the country notice and encourages those precautions.
Getting mass testing setup as well as the manufacturing of essentials is also a bonus. Most people still don't even have access to hand sanitizer.

Be careful. Fear mongering can lead to worse things than the current coronavirus outlook. You see how stupid the people are as a group, spook them and they stampede. The fallout could make fighting the virus that much more difficult.
If you drive to work daily, as many here do, you know that there's a percentage of people who take advantage of what others do to create a safe driving experience for everyone, by bypassing safe driving tactics and cutting through traffic to avoid being in the que. The fact there's a que makes it possible for that many cars to exist on the road at the same time, and these people accept that and need it, but they are parasitic and do not participate. The same will happen with these virus preparations. Some will take advantage of the fact the rest of us do things to make our surroundings palpable, like only taking what you need. They will instead take everything they can and pretend they are an anomaly, a flier that can be dismissed because it doesn't affect the overall numbers. Get a lot doing that and you have what you have now.

As he did in the article, I'll theorize those were just defined as epicenters after the fact. China tried to hide the virus for a couple months into the Lunar New Year, where there was no lockdown and they freely moved about their country and the world. There's probably multiple epicenters we'll never know about and cases that were never reported since the affected persons probably thought they had a cold. Any deaths during that time frame were probably attributed to viral pneumonia brought on by the flu. Just an anecdote, but many workers I know at the local Casino here (which has thousands of Asian customers [of course not all Chinese, but stands to reason some of them are]) all got sick at the same time with Covid symptoms. Basically, I think this virus has been circulating here for far longer than we know. I have a hard time believing we pinned down the patient zero (supposedly the man in Seattle).
But yeah, don't disagree that densely populated areas in climates and lifestyles that are hospitable to Covid transmission will be hit harder, like New York. I don't see the fate of Texas, Florida, California, and the Midwest in general suffering the same fate. Less population density, warmer climate, little mass transit. So that's why I take issue with the doomsday scenarios that the virus will sweep through the entire country and every US city will become a version of Italy.

DMC beat me to it. Fear mongering is not the way to go. Educating people is.

Thanks for sharing, hope you guys didn't skip over this nugget in there:
Higher fatality rates in China, Iran, and Italy are more likely associated with a sudden shock to the healthcare system unable to address demands and doesn’t accurately reflect viral fatality rates.
I think even the most ardent conservative will agree with flattening the curve. Where conservatives do have a point, though, is I don't think a state like Utah needs to be under the same restraints as New York. Many of those sparsely populated, Midwest and warmer Southwest states rely on "mainstreet" for pretty much everything. Even a one month lockdown where only "essential" businesses are allowed to operate could economically destroy many of those communities. I can empathize with there concerns here.
Yes, as soon as 100% of America realized it wasn't an ELE an Extinction Level Event 50% of America went to selling shit, hand-over-fist to 100% of America.
In 2013 they were even selling our shit.

I always told people that if we ever were to get some kind of real disaster type situation whatever scenario it happened to be, we as a a human society would probably do alot of the damage to ourselves before the actual disaster situation actually got to us due to fear mongering.

All you can do is what stores are doing...keep the shelves full as much as possible to sate shoppers/hoarders & make money hand-over-fist. This bonanza will not last forever & stores know it.

Have no fear, Thread. Just tell them "my body my choice". Most people will be willing to take the test but I know a non insignificant portion won't. If you encounter someone that tests positive and are unwilling to take the test you'll probably need to self isolate to make sure. The system doesn't have to be air tight. It just needs to prevent the hospitals from getting rushed. An "air tight" system like China is not even preferable.
Yeah those people that test positive but are unwilling to take the test are annoying

I generally agree that a federal lockdown likely does not make sense, and it should be handled locally as much as possible. That said, some of those sparsely populated areas are also likely at a high risk of collapsing their health services quicker, so it's a balancing act.

Q. Why doesn’t the US have enough medical supplies to handle this outbreak?
A. Top healthcare officials say the US does not have enough stockpiled medical equipment (https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/16/politics/top-health-officials-stockpiled-equipment/index.html) like masks, gowns and gloves to meet the anticipated need as this pandemic grows.
There are several reasons hospitals are on track to face dire shortages, said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert and professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
“About 20 or 30 years ago, we decided that we would not over-hospitalize,” Schaffner said.
Back then, hospitals often had empty hospital beds for new patients. But now, many hospitals are “absolutely full,” Schaffner said. “We have under-built hospital beds because they are very expensive.”
Also, Americans have grown accustomed to “just-in-time” ordering. But that becomes a huge problem when international supply chains are disrupted by an outbreak. “We didn’t anticipate international turbulence influencing this,” Schaffner said.
Now, some health care workers are making their own masks (https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/18/us/coronavirus-protective-equipment-trnd/index.html). More world wide data gathered in one article than I’ve seen anywhere else. His numbers give some hope that it’s not as bad as the media has been selling it. Hope he’s correct.
Good find.

https://news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-experts-say-new-symptoms-could-be-loss-taste-or-smell-11961439
One of the country's leading Ear, Nose and Throat consultants has told Sky News there are new signs for detecting COVID-19 in patients. The British Association of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT UK) say asymptomatic patients - ones who do not have a fever or a cough - could show a loss of smell or taste as symptoms after contracting coronavirus (https://news.sky.com/topic/coronavirus-8483).
It said in a statement: "Evidence from other countries that the entry point for the coronavirus is often in the eyes, nose and throat areas.
"We have also identified a new symptom (loss of sense of smell and taste) that may mean that people without other symptoms but with just the loss of this sense may have to self-isolate - again to reduce the spread of the virus."

Why is Russia reporting so few COVID-19 cases? Some say it's a cover-up
https://abcnews.go.com/International/russia-reporting-covid-19-cases-cover/story?id=69717763
But the Russian test, PCR News wrote, only detects the virus when there are over 100,000 copies of it per milliliter in a sample. That is far more than in other countries’ tests. A test in use in the U.S., for example, will pick up the virus with just 6,250 copies.

Because he shutdown travel earlier than other countries despite Dems calling him racist. Biden was still criticizing that move when shutdown travel more recently.
The fact that the US was slow on testing resulted in a massive failure narrative for Trump. There are hundreds of posts in this thread blaming Trump because the CDC botched their test.
That's pretty much the biggest factors. Him verbally not taking it serious is different from the actions he took. And the things he said isn't enough to make a strong case against him and that's why you have bullshit lies about what he said. With continued finger pointing towards Trump because of the CDC failures.

Trump administration won't compel corporations to produce medical supplies—because of 'conservatism'
With every passing hour of this pandemic, the shortage of medical equipment—as hospitals prepare for a massive influx of sick Americans—becomes more acute, and the need for such equipment and supplies becomes more dire.
"I only signed the Defense Production Act to combat the Chinese Virus should we need to invoke it in a worst-case scenario in the future," he tweeted, (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1240391871026864130) adding that
”Hopefully there will be no need, but
we are all in this TOGETHER!." :lol
that species of American blinded by a political ideology that abhors the very idea of government actually helping its people.
Trump’s advisers have privately said they are adhering to longstanding conservative opposition to big government,
a view that reflects the administration’s conflicted view of how it should handle a crisis unlike any a modern president has faced.”
March 21, Trump acknowledged in his daily press conference that he still had not taken any measures under the Act.
It will be important for Americans to hold this moment forever in their memories.
The nationalization of a few select corporations could have alleviated untold suffering among a huge swath of the American population,
preventing an agonizing death for many of them, but
there were people in this administration who believed it was
more important to allow those same corporations the freedom to do whatever they want—
including doing nothing, if they wished.
They believed it was better to let thousands of Americans suffer and die than to repudiate—even for a moment—their “free-market” ideology.

Here’s why Florida spring breakers could be ‘super-spreaders’ of COVID-19 coronavirus
“For much of this week, revelers continued to cram four and five to a hotel room,
swarm beaches over hundreds of miles of coastline, and
then gather shoulder-to-shoulder in bars and clubs –
almost a model process for spreading contagious diseases.”
most spring breakers will return to hometowns across the country
where any exposure to coronavirus could set off a contagion,
“What is happening in Florida with
spring break partying-on by students oblivious to the epidemiological implications
of their actions is nothing short of tragic,” Gonsalves said.
“While many of us have been hunkering down to try to break the chains of infection in our communities,
these young people have decided the pleasures of the moment are worth
bringing back the coronavirus to their friends and family.”
Florida’s spring break could be a “super-spreading” event.
“The students who are going and partying at spring break potentially are
feeding into a world where they are stuck in their houses for weeks on end later on,”

I never said covid was harder to get? And...
I am going to assume less than 1% die.
But the big cities might help to prove me "dead" wrong in the overall stats.
And these numbers will never be accurate, just hope they are accurate enough so this does not happen again.
Because this is big not only because of the medical implications, but because of our reaction.
We will have a better picture of what we overreacted to and did not react quick enough or could just not see coming.

There's a problem. Everywhere there are problems. It's not time to be political about it. It's time to come together. So practice social distancing, no groups larger than 10, but come together via skype or something.

The John's Hopkins site doesn't have recoveries. I don't think they count recoveries of instances that were not picked up here. I do believe people have caught it here and later recovered. They just weren't diagnosed

A number of countries are not reporting either. However, not difficult to calculate from active cases - deaths.

Best guess from scientists who have already been studying the biology of these viruses.
The articles with overwhelming stats without explanation of why numbers might be off one way or another might not be so helpful.

Small issue with this article is the contention that Corvid won't reduce much in frequency when it warms up, and the citation was a non-peer reviewed paper from over two weeks ago. This more thorough study from University of Maryland shows that the virus doesn't propagate as well in warmer weather.
https://www.medschool.umaryland.edu/news/2020/Researchers-Predict-Potential-Spread-and-Seasonality-for-COVID-19-Based-on-Climate-Where-Virus-Appears-to-Thrive.html
You'll see in a recent new thread I posted where I correlate flu virality to corvid virality in NY, CA, TX, and Florida. NY was the only ten+ million populated state to really get "hit," this is despite their patient zero arriving on March 1 vs. California's Jan 26th, and Texas's March 4. Texas and California are outside of the temperature zones where virus like to propagate best. I also think the Singapore example was way overstated to try and make a case. Corvid didn't swamp Singapore at all. 455 cases, 2 deaths. And they had their first case way back in Jan. 22. And Singapore has the 3rd largest population density in the world, yet their situation is nowhere close to Italy's (right in the "hot zone" temperature wise). Singapore isn't even on any kind of national lockdown. They've cancelled some large events, but local economies are still functioning as normal.

My feeling was epidemiological stats were weighing some down a bit because people on this board are taking wild stabs because authors are. The article I posted is merely the biology of these RNA virus(es). And if people find some differences from other sources let them rip. The person who wrote does not write journals for science publications, just gathers info and puts it out there. I have seen nothing broader yet concise so far on the biology of these types of viruses and written so that the layman can understand.

Indeed. I know we don't want to indulge in Dinning-Kruger (everyone is an expert about everything in times like this) and just "trust the experts," but experts usually don't have perfect consensus, so then it's up to us to sift through the data and opinions and make a logical conclusions. Personally, I think there's a very compelling case this virus will drop in frequency when it warms and less dense populated areas won't get overwhelmed, which bodes well for places like Cali, Texas, etc. And the warmer weather in Singapore has seemed to limit spread, despite them basically living on top of each other in a global country where I'm sure Chinese citizens travel to and from very frequently.
Paradoxically, I think many of these of scientists seemed to make rookie errors. All their projections about what the virus was going to do came from Wuhan and then Italy, and they were making simplistic 1 to 1 comparisons. I thought the first thing you do vis a vis the scientific method is control for variables? Wuhan and Italy aren't New York, New York isn't Texas, and so. Different climates, population densities, social cultures, median age groups, etc. Yet early on, many scientists and experts were forecasting situations entirely based on Wuhan and Italy. Maybe they just wanted to "hype it" a bit so we take it seriously. Even Fauci said if the population thinks we're overreacting, it means we're doing our job.

Honestly, I think if it did get taken down due to something wrong, it was this misstep on flattening the curve. We are getting overwhelmed in NY and Seattle. The author tried to use longer term economics as a reason for the flattening being counter productive. Even if you do believe the authors assessment, which I don’t, it could be taken as a spike it. (Which I don’t think the author intended)
But people should be able to figure that out on their own. I hope it was not indeed taken down. Hopefully its just slight amendments or it goes back up untouched.

Yeah, it was rock solid objective up until he infused his economic point-of-view toward the end there. No problem with asking questions about the economic ramifications from shelter-in-place and business closure orders, but I think it's too early to do that. We need another week to see how the virus is progressing.
I'm hopeful states like Texas and Florida can get back to a semblance of normality. Maybe here in California. We were the 2nd epicenter after Washington almost 2 months ago and the virus didn't sweep the state. Many might look at the accelerating number of cases here over the past week and say, "It's accelerating!" but what is accelerating is testing and deaths now attributed to the virus. Before the concerns became mainstream, deaths were probably attributed to complications from influenza. Point is, the virus has like being circulating around and killing people before the first official recorded cases and deaths.

The epidemiology is horribly difficult which is your second paragraph. They make models and the assumptions that go into the models can be horribly wrong. Also I would not doubt if political pressure involving “We need answers now” comes into play because in politics you have to answers, and they have to be correct.
