The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said that there were 5,352 new cases of COVID and 70 deaths over the past 24 hours, each a record high for the country in the nearly two-year-long outbreak.

South Korea’s COVID death toll now stands at 3,809, while new daily cases topped 5,000 three times this week.

The troubling numbers come despite a high vaccination rate and widespread compliance with mask policies among South Koreans.

First world problems I guess... would kill for the US to have those record highs, tbh...Snakeboy falling for det media spin again.

Meanwhile, here in third world country, we had people laughing at South Korea for the long lines to get masks back in the day...

Masking works, y'all

Well-fitting FFP2 masks reduce the risk at least into the per thousand range.
As high as the risk of infection is without mouth-nose protection, medical or FFP2 masks protect effectively. The Göttingen study confirms that FFP2 or KN95 masks are particularly effective in filtering infectious particles from the air breathed - especially if they are as tightly sealed as possible at the face. If both the infected and the non-infected person wear well-fitting FFP2 masks, the maximum risk of infection after 20 minutes is hardly more than one per thousand, even at the shortest distance. If their masks fit poorly, the probability of infection increases to about four percent. If both wear well-fitting medical masks, the virus is likely to be transmitted within 20 minutes with a maximum probability of ten percent. The study also confirms the intuitive assumption that for effective protection against infection, in particular the infected person should wear a mask that filters as well as possible and fits tightly to the face.

Meanwhile, here in third world country, we had people laughing at South Korea for the long lines to get masks back in the day...

Meanwhile the CDC experts insisted they were going to show the world how it should be done :lol

I keep treating it like it should be a personal choice if they are no more dangerous than you. It's their body.

You haven't defined your goal in any terms other than effort, everyone should do everything they can to mitigate the spread of the virus but that doesn't address what actually mitigates the spread. You've discounted social distancing when your own personal life is impacted, as unreasonable. So it must then be the level of immunity to the virus itself. But then you indicate that's not good enough either if there's more they can do. For them, there is no "unreasonable" but for you there is.

It’s not an individual concern though. It’s a public health concern.

And social distancing doesn’t mean the same thing as quarantining yourself non your home and never seeing family. But you know this, and are dishonest

The public is made up of individuals. The strength of public health relies on the strength of individual health. You pretend the strength of the structure doesn't rely on the strength of individual components because you have a simplistic view of the issue. You won't convince these people to do things they consider risky and unnecessary with the reasoning being that it's good for the public. You have to show them how it's good for the individual. But keep your blinders on and pretend you have the answer and no one will listen to you. You're arguing public health from an admin perspective and I am arguing individual choice from an individual perspective. You cannot be the entire public and you're not the admin, but I am the individual. So you're just creating a windmill to joust and screaming "dishonesty" when you cannot topple it. Good luck with it.

You're trying to address it from an admin perspective (as I said) and discuss policy and "ought". I am instead referring to why a person wouldn't feel the need to be vaccinated and why it's not following the science to treat those people as lepers when they are likely more immune than you.

If it's a public health concern for them, why isn't it for you? Immunity is immunity.

Sorry, I know you're trying really hard to disconnect the decisions of one administration from the other, that's very convenient, tbh... but we're looking at the 20-20 of who did things right or wrong, and how you tackle this from the very start matters, and matters a lot.

This is like getting a cancer diagnosis and asking your massage therapist for advice, then once the cancer spread all over your body and you finally go see an oncologist, you're bitching why he's not doing more, tbh... If you fucked up badly from the get go, the people that follow have to clean up your fucking mess, and sometimes the cat is just too out of the bag to put it back in.

I can definitely say Brandon could've done more things and some things better, despite certain governors trying to sabotage him, but I also think he had one or two things he couldn't fail on, like vaccine distribution, keeping an smart, educated, experienced person like Fauci around, etc, and he's done those things. Given popular disdain (plus political aversion/animus) in the USA toward non-medical measures to hinder transmission of COVID, the absolute number of people requiring hospitalization could be catastrophic, if Omicron outcompetes Delta.

Another warp speed push for therapeutic treatments and 2nd generation vaccines, at a minimum, would be a good idea. Frank official advice about airborne disease, air quality and indoor gatherings would also be timely, but there's approximately zero chance the Biden administration would risk "ruining Christmas" by doing so.

I give it two to three months until antivaxxers/antimaskers on this board start blaming Biden for not doing enough to stem transmission of SARS-CoV-2. I sure hope I'm wrong.

COVID-19 hospitalizations are rising rapidly in a populous South African province where the new omicron variant of the coronavirus has been detected.

Hospitalizations across the country have increased by 63 percent since the beginning of the month, according to data from the country’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases. In Gauteng, a province that includes the country’s largest city, Johannesburg, hospitalizations are up by nearly 400 percent since the beginning of the month, from 120 for the week ending Nov. 6 to 580 for the week ending Saturday.

The South Africa diseases institute, part of the group of researchers and government institutions that first reported the variant to the World Health Organization, said in a statement that omicron cases were found in Gauteng at “a relatively high frequency.”

This from BLS shows (part of) the impact of COVID and the post-infection sequelae of COVID ("long COVID".)

People who've dropped off the employment rolls or who were never recorded as too ill to work wouldn't show up here.

That's a giant word salad that doesn't address the question.

We're going to reach "natural herd immunity" like we did with the flu, a 100+ year old disease that still mutates and still is best fought with vaccines?

Or the plethora of other diseases we vaccinate our kids against (like polio, etc) because, it turns out, there's no such thing as "natural herd immunity" with them?

Dunno if you changed your weed provider lately, but I would check into that, tbh

Polio wasn't a problem when we had natural herd immunity to it. It only became a problem when people stopped getting infected naturally in their first 18 months of life.

There's no stopping this virus with vaccines. That should be obvious by now. It's a common cold virus when we adapt to it, unless Hater is right and it adapted to us.

The vaccine works extraordinarily well. Period. And this vaccine has had to take on a virus that is as easy if not easier to catch than cold viruses.

But people's brains and behavior that necessarily work well (as evidence on this board), and that behavior has made a rather nasty virus (because: 1. It infects very easily 2. It is a killer, its not a cold virus) so difficult.

Stopping this virus was never a goal, AFAIK. Keeping it under control was and is, much like the flu is kept under control primarily through vaccination.

That said, stopping 'a' virus via vaccination is not unheard of either. Take Polio, a virus that still exists today, is a great example of how you 'stop' viruses via vaccination. That said, it clearly is a different ballgame when we're talking airborne.

So that means almost 800 million people do take the "shitty flu vaccine" which saves lives, likely because it's indeed the best option not to die of the flu.

COVID also doesn't kill 98% of the people it infects... that's still 150 million plus people dead. Vaccines reduce that number substantially, which is why they're not going anywhere...

I don't recall anyone saying Trump inherited it, and he didn't even know it was coming.

He doesn't need to lay claim to anything. He stepped into office and there was a mismanaged pandemic. Heck, that's likely the #1 reason the big loser was booted and he got the job.

You can argue he did a good or bad job since he was at the helm, and I would agree with you that Old Joe is full of shit, but the fact that this was mismanaged from the start is not really dabatable. When we talk about countries that dealt with this pandemic much better than we did, it's unequivocal that they made the right calls from the very start.
