Privatized health care fails people -- again and again -- when it counts the most.

Do you consider Taiwan, Australia and South Korea and Japan "large, invasive, totalitarian governments?" If it's not the totalitarianism, what's their advantage? Public investment and national coordination, perhaps?

No.

But Japan and South Korea dont have the ethnic diversity/division we have. And have a robust infrastructure. India is not as ethnically diverse but its just so poor and not put together well.
I do not want this to be true, but some of the worst has been brought out in this country. We are not United. During very acute times against a formidable disease, we failed. And it could be much worse if not for the vaccine. Part of the reason is a united message and response. And the bills have not come due yet. Just wait till insurance companies start cutting people off.

Donald Trump uncovered what was waiting to burst forth. It did lose him an election, but it also showed us how weak our democracy is.

Colorado sees rapid spread of cases among middle and high school students.

Coronavirus cases in Colorado are rapidly increasing among middle and high school students, state public health officials said this week, four months after schools began to reopen.

“Their rate is much higher on average for what we’re seeing for adults in the state, and

that increase we’re seeing is pretty steep at this point,”

There is also an increase in younger children, between 3 and 10 years old, though it is “not as dramatic,”

India Is What Happens When Rich People Do Nothing (http://India Is What Happens When Rich People Do Nothing)

India may be classified as a developing or middle-income country, and by international standards, it does not spend enough on the health of its people. Yet this masks many of India’s strengths in the health-care sector: Our doctors are among the best trained on the planet, and as is well known by now, our country is a pharmacy for the world, thanks to an industry built around making cost-effective medicines and vaccines.

What is evident, however, is that we suffer from moral malnutrition—none of us more so than the rich, the upper class, the upper caste of India. And nowhere is this more evident than in the health-care sector.

India’s economic liberalization in the ’90s brought with it a rapid expansion of the private health-care industry, a shift that ultimately created a system of medical apartheid (https://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/many-probes-few-answers/article19547461.ece): World-class private hospitals catered to wealthy Indians and medical tourists from abroad; state-run facilities were for the poor. Those with money were able to purchase the best available care (or, in the case of the absolute richest, flee to safety (https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/indias-super-rich-beat-deadline-land-in-uk-in-private-jets/articleshow/82248975.cms) in private jets), while elsewhere the country’s health-care infrastructure was held together with duct tape. The Indians who bought their way to a healthier life did not, or chose not to, see the widening gulf. Today, they are clutching their pearls as their loved ones fail to get ambulances, doctors, medicine, and oxygen.

I have covered health and science for nearly 20 years, including as the health editor for The Hindu, a major Indian newspaper. That time has taught me that there is no shortcut to public health, no opting out from it. Now the rich sit alongside the poor, facing a reckoning that had only ever plagued the vulnerable in India.

$800B / year and military people aren't paid a living wage, just like Capitalism

The Pandemic Has Added To Food Insecurity Among Military Families

https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/e2bf537/2147483647/strip/true/crop/6000x4000+0+0/resize/880x587!/quality/90/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F1b%2F2a%2Fe56e108349 aeaa8b4548bf537897%2Fssg-hummer.JPG

On a recent spring day at Fort Sam Houston, a line of cars idled with their trunks popped open, waiting as volunteers unloaded 11,000 pounds’ worth of food from a semi parked nearby. Some of the drivers were soldiers who had just gotten off work, while others were military spouses or relatives.

As they rolled forward to collect their rations, most barely cracked their windows — volunteers say that’s common because people don’t want to be seen.

In the last year, COVID-19 has exacerbated the unique challenges of military families, like high rates of spousal unemployment.

According to a survey (https://bluestarfam.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/BSF_MFLS_CompReport_EXECSUMMARY.pdf) from the military support organization Blue Star Families,

more than 40% of working military spouses reported losing their jobs during the height of the pandemic.

Others had to reduce their work hours, usually to take care of kids who were home and in virtual school.

Many are still not back to work full-time.

“We saw a lot more job losses among spouses of military service members, because childcare became an issue,”

COVID cases and hospitalization surging in Oregon

On Friday, Gov. Kate Brown placed 15 counties in an “extreme risk” category, banning indoor dining at restaurants and limiting the number of patrons at gyms. She said the return to restrictions could save hundreds of lives and prevent as many as 450 hospitalizations over the next three weeks.

“What I can’t do is bring back someone’s life lost to this virus,” Brown said at a news conference (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnZYgN-9Yvk) Friday. “That’s why, as hard as this is, we must act immediately. This is truly a race between the variants and the vaccines.”

She imposed the restrictions after cases rose by 51% in two weeks, the fastest increase in the nation, and hospitalizations jumped by more than a third. As cases declined in much of the rest of the country, Oregon lurched in the opposite direction.

Vaccination drives this trend and so do more contagious variants.

Nationally, adults under 50 now account (https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#covidnet-hospitalization-network) for the most hospitalized covid patients in the country — about 36% of all hospital admissions. Those ages 50 to 64 account for the second-highest number of hospitalizations, or about 31%. Meanwhile, hospitalizations among adults 65 and older have fallen significantly.

“A lot of them are requiring ICU care,” said Dr. Michelle Barron (https://www.uchealth.org/provider/michelle-barron-md-infectious-disease/), head of infection prevention and control at UCHealth, one of Colorado’s large hospital systems, as compared with earlier in the pandemic.

The median age of covid patients at UCHealth hospitals has dropped by more than 10 years in the past few weeks, from 59 down to about 48 years old, Barron said.

“I think we will continue to see that, especially if there’s not a lot of vaccine uptake in these groups,” she said.

“We don’t yet have enough younger adults vaccinated to counteract the increased ease with which the variants spread,” said Duchin at a recent press briefing.https://khn.org/news/article/covid-cases-hospitalizations-rise-in-younger-adults/

However, it's hard to precisely determine the efficacy of Sputnik V. It was approved for use in Russia last August before the state safety review had been completed. Eight months after the government's fast-track approval, there is still no reliable data on the vaccine. Russia has not yet made crucial primary data available to an independent drug testing authority.

In September, British medical journal The Lancet published partial results from Sputnik V's phase 1 and 2 trials. However, the two studies on safety, tolerability and immunogenicity only included 38 participants each. The findings stated a strong immune response, and said no serious adverse side effects had been detected.

International experts had strong reservations about the results — and not only because of the size of the trial groups. Several researchers pointed out a number of oddities: For example, even though the participants had been given very different forms of the vaccine, the study found that they all had the exact same level of antibodies in their blood on different days. They said that it could not be a coincidence that the participants all had identical levels of T-cells, which fight the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Some 40 scientists from Europe, the United States, Canada and even Russia signed an open letter raising concerns that data might have been manipulated.

On February 2, Russian scientists published interim results from phase 3 trials in The Lancet. They said that over 18,000 participants had received two doses of the vaccine at an interval of three weeks and claimed that efficacy was at 91.6% with no serious side effects. Once again, their international colleagues responded with skepticism, pointing out that there could not be an independent evaluation if the primary data had not been published.

https://www.dw.com/en/is-sputnik-v-vaccine-safe/a-57219314

I think if the Russians really put this out there and made money off of it, someone will suss out how effective it is in reality.

Hate to see people be guinea pigs tho.

Odd that Russia doesn't was to release the primary data.

Dunno, I trust the corrupt kleptocracy there as far as I can throw it. Given how obviously Putin hates democracy and human rights, even less so.

A good example of why being skeptical of the Russian government is warranted:

Not releasing the primary research data to peer review for example.

They might be telling the truth, but the point of science is independent verification.

More than 6.9 million people have died from Covid-19, according to a new analysis (https://statnews.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f8609630ae206654824f897b6&id=68bcc03692&e=7e2ee1dd49) ... — which is more than twice the current estimated global death toll from the infection.

In the U.S. alone, the new estimate finds that 905,000 people likely died from Covid-19, up 38% from the CDC's current figure of nearly 562,000 deaths.

The estimates — which are a count of deaths directly caused by Covid-19 and not related causes — are likely higher

because hospital systems have been so overwhelmed and

because of insufficient testing, according to the scientists who conducted the analysis.

‘Like rotting fish’: COVID-19 leaves many survivors holding their noses (https://link.dallasnews.com/lt.php?i=16400A16943A104A728721)

As Tiffani Hutton recovered her sense of smell after COVID-19, she started to get whiffs of terrible odors.

Each time, she asked her husband, Cartell, if he smelled anything, but he didn’t.

So she checked expiration dates on their food, cleaned out the fridge and took out the garbage.

She did it again and again.

After a couple of weeks, Hutton typed: "Why does everything smell like rotting fish?" into Google and found

a large community of people online suffering from the same condition.

It’s called parosmia, a distorted sense of smell

that can be triggered by colds and sinus infections, head injuries, chemical exposures or cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation.

1. After the flu epidemic of 2009/10 which caught the govt unprepared, Obama formed a group to plan for diseases outbreaks. The group ran simulations annually and developed as 70? page document which was handed to Trash's people in Feb? 2017. The document was ignored by Trash's Exec.

2. Trash disbanded Obamas's pandemic preparedness operation about Sep '19, while ignoring its work.

3. Trash did not use DPA well or early to provide PPE, but he did use DPA to force workers back into the meat plants. 1000s of them became diseased and died. $100Ms of CARES Act went to defense contractors, aka BigDonors, rather than to health care/PPE

Compounding the disaster was for-profit health-care bean counters had been ordering just-in-time supplies from China, so there was no inventory of PPE.

Review of the Emerging Evidence Demonstrating the Efficacy of Ivermectin in the Prophylaxis and Treatment of COVID-19

Conclusions:

Meta-analyses based on 18 randomized controlled treatment trials of ivermectin in COVID-19 have found large, statistically significant reductions in mortality, time to clinical recovery, and time to viral clearance. Furthermore, results from numerous controlled prophylaxis trials report significantly reduced risks of contracting COVID-19 with the regular use of ivermectin. Finally, the many examples of ivermectin distribution campaigns leading to rapid population-wide decreases in morbidity and mortality indicate that an oral agent effective in all phases of COVID-19 has been identified.

Within seconds of landing the pin-point blow - made more forceful by the fact Saunders was crouching into the shot - Alvarez raised his hands in front of his rival, ruthlessly letting the 73,126 in attendance know that he had broken the resistance of a man now at his mercy.

We investigated the presence of SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD)-specific antibodies in blood samples of 959 asymptomatic individuals enrolled in a prospective lung cancer screening trial between September 2019 and March 2020 to track the date of onset, frequency, and temporal and geographic variations across the Italian regions. SARS-CoV-2 RBD-specific antibodies were detected in 111 of 959 (11.6%) individuals, starting from September 2019 (14%), with a cluster of positive cases (>30%) in the second week of February 2020 and the highest number (53.2%) in Lombardy. This study shows an unexpected very early circulation of SARS-CoV-2 among asymptomatic individuals in Italy several months before the first patient was identified, and clarifies the onset and spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Finding SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in asymptomatic people before the COVID-19 outbreak in Italy may reshape the history of pandemic.https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33176598/

a successful blue state with 60% vaccinated, are red state old folks homes the the same?

COVID-19 risks reemerge at nursing homes as workers decline vaccine and new residents struggle to get shots

It was a battle many thought we had already won.

Residents of nursing homes were among the first to get vaccinated against the coronavirus last winter, leading to a dramatic decline in new infections.

But now, there are signs that the danger remains and may even be growing again.

The percentage of nursing home residents who are vaccinated has declined since March, amid complaints from senior care leaders of difficulty getting shots for newly admitted residents.

Perhaps more concerning,

a sizable share of Massachusetts nursing home staff members continue to go unvaccinated for COVID-19,

despite aggressive initiatives to convince the hesitant.

You definitely didn't want to get this early.

Because people wait till they are seriously ill before they go in?

~1/4 of Texans do NOT have health insurance now. It was ~ 20% in 2019, this is a possibility.

It is also clear that health insurance companies are wanting bills due coming in now so... "crap, look at this, dont you go in"

Its is also pretty clear people still think is "just sniffles", but it goes bad fast.

Also this whole mess was turned into a political football instead of a very large health problem we all share. Some people looked at death rate compared to other virus and thought, WTF, this is nothing. Not realizing so many more people would get this virus. There is a time for %s and a time for shear numbers, people like to play games with stats to comfort themselves, or to just make a political point in a way they deem favorable.

I remember this being more of a thing early on when hospitals were loaded.
I dont think it happens as much now. Its also age dependent, now younger people make up a larger % of cases.
If they even get far enough to see or hear a doctor to explain what type of breathing problems. Some people just dont know whats bad before its way late. Some people think its allergies and their nose is stuffed up. Manage mildly ill patients at home
When possible, manage mildly ill patients with COVID-19 at home.

Assess the patient’s ability to safely self-isolate and monitor their symptoms at home and assess the risk of the virus spreading to others in the patient’s home environment.
Provide clear instructions to caregivers and people who are sick regarding home care, including when and how to access the healthcare system for in-person care or urgent/emergent conditions.
Identify staff to monitor patients at home with daily check-ins using telephone calls, texts, patient portals, or other means, if possible.
Engage local public health resources, home health services, and community organizations to assist with support services (such as delivery of food, medication, and other goods) for patients isolating at home.
(from the CDC)

In April, the CDC issued new guidance to laboratories recommending reducing the RT-PCR CT value to 28 cycles — but only for those fully vaccinated individuals being tested for COVID.

In an RT-PCR test — the gold standard for detecting SARS-CoV-2 — RNA is extracted from the swab collected from the patient. It is then converted into DNA, which is then amplified.

CT, or cycle threshold, is a value that emerges during RT-PCR tests. A CT value refers to the number of cycles needed to amplify viral RNA to reach a detectable level.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, a patient is considered positive for COVID if the CT value is below 35. In other words, if the virus is detectable after 35 cycles or earlier, then the patient is considered positive.

Dr. Anthony Fauci recommends a CT value of 35. Globally, the accepted cut-off for CT value for COVID ranges between 35 and 40, depending on instructions from manufacturers of testing equipment.

“If the benchmark were to be lowered to 24 it would mean that CT values in the range 25-34 would not be considered positive,” according to the Indian Council of Medical Research, as reported by The Indian Express. “A benchmark of 35, therefore, means that more patients would be considered positive than we would get if the benchmark were 24.”

In other words, lowering CT threshold parameter may lead to missing infectious persons.

Peter Navarro Pushes Batty Conspiracy Theory That Dr. Fauci Has ‘Killed Millions of Americans’

Peter Navarro hates Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Navarro just offered plenty by pronouncing Fauci the “father” of the coronavirus,

claiming Fauci wanted to “weaponize” it, and

somehow assigning him blame for for “millions” of Americans dying.

appeared on Steve Bannon’s podcast :lol

to bash Fauci with the false insinuation (https://www.statesman.com/story/news/politics/politifact/2021/02/09/covid-dr-anthony-fauci-did-not-fund-research-tied-creation/4450338001/) that the NIAID helped create the coronavirus by funding research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Navarro claimed Fauci and Daszak were involved in the process to “weaponize” viruses,

and that Fauci was setting up his colleague to be a “fall guy.”

Even after the Trump presidency ended, Navarro has kept railing at Fauci by calling him “the father of the virus” (https://www.mediaite.com/tv/peter-navarro-goes-on-wild-rant-calling-fauci-the-father-of-the-virus/) and

claiming “He allowed the Chinese Communist Party, the People’s Liberation Army to genetically engineer a virus using gain of function.”

Fauci wanted to weaponize the virus.

He is the father of it.

He has killed millions of Americans if that thing came from the lab, and now it’s 99.99 percent sure it did.”

to be fair we only had so many cases because we test too much!

There's some truth to the notion that more testing = more cases. If someone told you that we had a lot of COVID infected people in the US who have gone untested, you'd probably not doubt it. Therefore it stands to reason that more testing would mean more cases, since cases are confirmed through testing.

It's amusing how people (like you) seem to take the common sense approach on some things but go retard on others based purely on who said it.

There's some truth to the notion that more testing = more cases.

What you mean is more testing = more reported cases. The cases exist whether it was reported or not.

The problem with under-reporting is that it makes it that much more difficult to both get a notion of the scale of the problem and properly allocate resources to combat it as well.

This is kind of like the vaccine is made, all is well now.
The fact that multiple steps are involved to actually get it into the arm and even keep track of people to try and determine its efficacy outside a pre study. Both teams love to jump on this difficulty.

Case definition, in epidemiology, set of criteria used in making a decision as to whether an individual has a disease or health event of interest. Establishing a case definition is an imperative step in quantifying the magnitude of disease in a population. Case definitions are used in ongoing public health surveillance to track the occurrence and distribution of disease within a given area, as well as during outbreak investigations in field epidemiology.

This is the "case" that's being referred to. Increase in cases, for this discussion (and in the past) is always about reported cases. This doesn't mean reported to the CDC per se, but diagnosed.

Population has X amount of infection. Testing reveals those. Each one becomes a case as the testing increases.

World’s most vaccinated nation sees COVID-19 resurgence,

raising questions over Chinese vaccine

Despite its standing as the world's most vaccinated country, the 115-island archipelago Seychelles is seeing a dramatic resurgence in COVID-19 transmission, bringing its daily case rate to "a higher number of infections per capita than India,"

approximately 67 percent of Seychelles' population (https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/covid-vaccine-tracker-global-distribution/) is vaccinated — the majority of those citizens received Chinese vaccine Sinopharm, while the remainder received Covishield, a derivative of AstraZeneca's shot manufactured in India.

"more than one third of new active cases are people who are fully vaccinated."

most of Seychelle's cases appear to be mild

"The Sinopharm vaccine really requires two doses," she added, "and

some of the cases that are being reported are occurring either soon after a single dose, or soon after a second dose."

Just sad.

Kids are making up larger proportion of Covid-19 cases now, CDC says.

Children and teens are starting to make up a larger proportion of coronavirus cases now than earlier in the epidemic, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is holding a public meeting to discuss whether to recommend Pfizer/BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine for use in youth as young as 12. The US Food and Drug Administration extended its emergency use authorization for the vaccine in 12-15-year-olds Monday.

Ohio with an interesting approach to increase vaccinations.

Ohio will give 5 people $1 million each in COVID-19 vaccine lottery
MEREDITH DELISO
Wed, May 12, 2021, 7:59 PM·3 min read
Five vaccinated Ohioans will win $1 million each through a new lottery announced Wednesday, in one of the largest financial incentives announced by a state to combat declining demand for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Starting May 26, the state will award $1 million each week to an adult who has received at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Gov. Mike DeWine said. There will be five total drawings.

"I know that some may say, 'DeWine, you’re crazy! This million-dollar drawing idea of yours is a waste of money,'" the governor said during an address Wednesday. "But truly, the real waste at this point in the pandemic -- when the vaccine is readily available to anyone who wants it -- is a life lost to COVID-19."

The state will also hold a weekly lottery starting May 26 for those 17 and younger who have gotten the COVID-19 vaccine. Five winners will receive a full, four-year scholarship to a State of Ohio university, which includes tuition, room-and-board and books, DeWine announced.
